ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

ZETA BETA TAU FRATERNITY AND

ZETA BETA TAU FOUNDATION

The Mission of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity includes a goal of preparing brothers for positions of leadership and service within their communities. It is with the Mission in mind ZBT plans for the future. ZBT began a thoughtful, in-depth strategic planning process in 2014 with the goal of creating a new five-year plan. The planning team spent months interviewing brothers of all ages, learning from campus professionals, engaging with partner organizations and setting goals. In 2015, the strategic priorities were finalized and adopted by the Supreme Council and Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Board of Directors. Staff and volunteers set to work adding action items and mapping growth patterns. The result was a bold new strategy that sets Zeta Beta Tau apart from our interfraternal peers and takes the Brotherhood to new heights. The Brotherhood for a Lifetime Strategic Plan 2015-2020 has seven main strategic priorities, or zones. The zones — Undergraduate Experience (Training), Undergraduate Experience (Heritage), Growth and Retention, Alumni Engagement, Fundraising, Organizational

Capacity (Collaboration) and Organizational Capacity (Technology) — encompass the entirety of the Brotherhood for a Lifetime experience and provide value to all parties invested in Zeta Beta Tau. Starting with a brother’s time as a student, ZBT offers a clear focus on life skills, provides opportunities for career and personal development, fills in the gap between classroom and real-world education and provides meaningful contact with alumni. We are proactive in sharing our heritage and connecting with the Jewish community. To offer the best undergraduate experience possible, it is imperative our Brotherhood continues to thrive. We set plans that help our chapters and colonies maintain a size that allows them to be successful on their campuses and in their communities. The Fraternity’s overall expansion policies should be deliberate. ZBT knows that fraternity does not end with graduation. The Fraternity enriches a brother’s post-college life through continuing professional development programs, offering ways to give back through mentoring and volunteering as well as plentiful opportunities to share in brotherly love. Support from alumni is critical to promoting all aspects of the Brotherhood for a Lifetime experience. Under the plan, ZBT has a careful strategy to grow its donor base and engagement levels. The depth of this strategic plan requires a broad support network and modern technology, so much so that capacity is included as a priority. The international organization’s structure must be able to support the actions necessary to reach 2020. That will include technology, manpower, discipline and forethought. Through 2020, many people will be working toward these goals to make our Fraternity the best it can be. There’s never been a better time to be a ZBT.

DEAR BROTHERS AND FRIENDS,

CONTENTS

What a year we have just wrapped up! We are in the fourth year of the Brotherhood for a Lifetime Strategic Plan 2015-2020 and are blazing toward record-setting accomplishments. Throughout the 2018-2019 academic year, we experienced stronger undergraduate engagement, new opportunities for alumni involvement, LIBBY learning moments at every level of ANDERSON the organization and an unbreakable CAE brotherly bond across the globe. Reaching new heights, while navigating the bumps in the road, would not be possible without the hard-working and dedicated volunteers and staff. We are excited to share more about our successful year in the pages that follow. Thank you FARON A. for your continued support and involvement LEWITT in our beloved Fraternity. Psi (University of

UNDERGRADUATE EXPERI E NCE

We work to refine development initiatives for undergraduate brothers. We will clarify how the trainings build skills that last well beyond the undergraduate experience (especially by creating more opportunities for alumni to share their experiences with students). We hope to drive greater excitement about and consistency in the usage of training and development initiatives by improving their relevance, clarity and connection to learning outcomes.

My Undergraduate Experience ...

‘‘

ZBT gave me an incredible opportunity to become a better version of myself. Before starting school, I never imagined myself having the ability to lead an organization and to achieve goals that I would not have thought possible. After graduating, I know that ZBT will always be a part of me and that the lessons I’ve learned still exist everyday.

ZBT has made it a top priority to educate brothers on healthy relationships. In its third year, the award-winning GREEN LIGHT: GO! fundraising event grew rapidly. Funds raised from Green Light: Go! events support Jewish Women International (JWI) creation of programs to not only educate brothers about healthy relationships and bystander intervention, but also position our men as leaders in changing the culture on campus and being examples of the very best of the fraternal world, similar to SAFE SMART DATING.

REGIONAL OFFICER INSTITUTES In 2018, the Fraternity started a new program for chapter and colony officers. Five tracks were developed to help each officer better understand his roles and responsibilities within the chapter. The development of these programs is based off feedback from undergraduates over the past three years and their involvement at programs like Dover Days and International Convention.

Mindful of our Mission and heritage, we will amplify our chapter training and support to further enable our brothers to champion diversity and meaningfully impact their local Jewish communities and Jewish communities around the world.

My Undergraduate Experience ...

‘‘

Incorporating the Jewish aspect of ZBT into the fraternal experience allows people to connect to something greater than just the social aspect of a college fraternity. It not only allows for you to connect with your brothers, but other members of the greater Jewish community. As a Jewish young adult, I have treasured this aspect of ZBT.

The Fraternity has renewed its focus on bringing brotherhood to our alumni by planning more LOCAL AND REGIONAL EVENTS. Besides working with the established area alumni associations, staff connect with chapters and individual brothers to assist in planning a wide variety of networking events and opportunities to promote brotherly love. The focus on bringing ZBT to our brothers is crucial to re-engaging those who may have been less active as alumni, and it helps cultivate potential volunteers and donors and leads to strong commitments.

This scholarship means more to me than most people could realize. I have always worked hard for the things that I have, and that includes my education. Yet, being a student who chose to go out of state still takes a toll on finances for my family and me. My mother is a single mother and largely supports me on her own. The Zeta Beta Tau scholarship is a very special reward that not only shows my devotion to academic excellence in my fraternity, but also shows the organization's devotion to its members far and wide. FRATERNITY MIS SIO N The mission of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity (ZBT) is to foster and develop in its brotherhood the tenets of its Credo: Intellectual Awareness, Social Responsibility, Integrity and Brotherly Love, in order to prepare its brothers for positions of leadership and service within their communities. Mindful of its founding in 1898 as the world’s first Jewish Fraternity, ZBT will preserve and cultivate its relationships within the Jewish community. Since 1954, ZBT has been committed to its policy of non-sectarian brotherhood, and values the diversity of its brothers. ZBT will recruit and initiate men of good character, regardless of religion, race or creed who are accepting of these principles.

FRATERNITY CR EDO We, the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, believe that the development of the individual as a responsible, mature member of society is the primary goal of the university today. We believe that fraternity offers to the university community a unique, desirable and successful means of achieving this goal. In fulfilling the purposes of fraternity, we dedicate ourselves to the principles of: INTELLECTUAL AWARENESS. Fraternity creates an atmosphere conducive to the expansion of the individual’s intellectual horizons, the interchange of ideas within the academic community and the pursuit of scholastic excellence. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. Fraternity requires the individual to commit himself and accept his responsibility to participate. INTEGRITY. Fraternity generates a standard of personal integrity – a framework for the individual to maintain honesty, exhibit loyalty and retain a sense of self-discipline. BROTHERLY LOVE. Fraternity inspires and expresses the interrelation of the individual with his fellows, his pride in the institution and respect for the wisdom of its tradition.

FOUNDATION MIS S IO N The Zeta Beta Tau Foundation is a nonprofit corporation exclusively committed to educational and charitable purposes that assist the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. The Foundation assists the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity by funding scholarships and academic and leadership programs to maximize their personal development and prepare them to be leaders of society. The scholarships and academic and leadership programs funded by the Foundation enhance the overall value of membership in Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity by complementing the collegiate educational experience.
