A LIFE IN COLOUR

V

arvara Roza Galleries in Duke Street will open the first UK solo exhibition of Britt Boutros Ghali, the internationally acclaimed Norwegian-born artist whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Svolvær in 1937, Ghali discovered painting during the long postwar winters of her childhood, the shifting northern light shaping her instinctive language of abstraction. Since the early 1970s she has lived in Egypt, dividing her time between Cairo and the Mediterranean coast, where her mosaic-adorned home and studio have become a cultural destination in their own right. Ghali’s large-scale canvases are an intoxicating fusion of gestural energy, colour, and rhythm. Her artistic legacy is formidable: since debuting in Paris in 1962 she has exhibited internationally, with work entering major public and private collections, including MoMA in Egypt and the Queen Noor Museum of Modern Art in Jordan. She has been recognised with Norway’s highest artistic honour, the St. Olav’s Order, as well as the Slovak Presidential Order for Art and Culture, and most recently, Egypt’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in the Arts. Now in her 88th year, Ghali continues to paint with urgency and vitality. Her new London exhibition o ers a rare chance to encounter an artist still producing the most powerful work of her career.

ICON Style

Was Marie Antoinette the first real celebrity?

The V&A’s newest exhibition takes a look at her life and her wardrobe

When Marie Antoinette arrived at Versailles in 1770 as a 14-year-old Austrian bride, she could hardly have imagined the cultural afterlife awaiting her. Over two centuries after her death at the guillotine, she remains one of the most recognisable figures in world history, as much a symbol of extravagance and excess as of youth, glamour and tragedy. Now, for the first time, a major British exhibition will attempt to unravel why her style, and her story, have proved so enduring.

Opening this September at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Marie Antoinette Style will be the UK’s first exhibition devoted to the French queen. Bringing together more than 250 objects, including a number of extraordinary loans from the Château de Versailles that have never before left France, the show will explore how a monarch whose reign ended dramatically continues to shape fashion,

art and design more than 250 years later.

Among the treasures arriving from Versailles are fragments of her richly embellished court gowns, her silk slippers, and jewels from her private collection. Visitors will also see personal e ects such as her dinner service from the Petit Trianon and intimate objects from her toilette case. The exhibition includes her final note, written in a prayer book shortly before her execution in 1793, a reminder of the stark reality behind the myth. But the exhibition is not limited to relics of the queen’s life. Curators

have traced the evolution of “Marie Antoinette style” from the 18th century to the present, showing how successive generations have reinvented her image. That narrative begins with the opulent interiors, fashions and jewellery of her Versailles court, including a replica of the infamous diamond necklace at the centre of a scandal that damaged her reputation. It then moves to the 19th century, when her image was revived by Empress Eugénie, Napoleon III’s wife, who staged elaborate reimaginings of the ill-fated queen’s style. By the 1880s and 1890s, what was known as the “French Revival” dominated interiors and fashion in Britain and North America, fuelled by collectors seeking objects with a connection to the doomed queen. Period photographs and elaborate fancy-dress costumes illustrate the obsession.

Later, in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras, she was cast as a figure of fantasy and decadence, inspiring luminous illustrations and evening gowns by leading designers of the time. From there, the exhibition charts her reappearance in twentieth-century couture, cinema and even pop culture. Visitors will see creations by Vivienne Westwood, Dior, Moschino,

Marie Antoinette (2006), whose pastelcoloured dreamscape reintroduced the queen to a new generation. Costumes from the film, along with photographs by Tim Walker and Robert Polidori, sit alongside contemporary works by artists Beth Katleman and Victor Glemaud, who reinterpret elements of her style for today.

Theatricality is at the heart of the staging. Immersive installations and a scent experience will attempt to recreate the atmosphere of Versailles, from the perfumes of the court to the textures of its interiors.

The aim is not only to show how Marie Antoinette looked but also how her world might have felt, sounded and even smelled.

For curator Sarah Grant, the queen’s enduring fascination lies in her combination of glamour, spectacle and tragedy.

“The most fashionable, scrutinised and controversial queen in history, Marie Antoinette’s name summons both visions of excess and objects and interiors of great beauty,” she says. “Her story has been retold and repurposed by each successive generation to suit its own ends. The rare combination of glamour, spectacle and tragedy she presents remains as intoxicating today as it was in the eighteenth century.”

The exhibition also aims to look critically at the myths that have long surrounded her. The notorious “let them eat cake” line, for example, is dismissed by historians as apocryphal. Instead, the curators highlight the ways in which she engaged with Enlightenment ideas, including new approaches to motherhood, childhood and education. The queen, they suggest, was not simply a frivolous spendthrift but also a woman navigating the pressures of power, representation and survival in a hostile environment.

This more nuanced perspective is

underscored by the personal items on display, such as a jatte téton or “breast cup” from her Sèvres Rambouillet dairy service, delivered in 1787. Long believed— incorrectly—to have been modelled on her own breast, the porcelain object illustrates the layers of myth and fantasy that have always clung to her image. Her armchair,

monogrammed with her initials, will also be displayed, a reminder of her physical presence within the V&A’s own collections. Why does Marie Antoinette continue to fascinate? The answer may lie in her role as one of the first true celebrities, whose image was consumed, contested and commodified in ways that feel

strikingly modern. She cultivated a style that was both lavish and carefully curated, at once asserting her status and inviting criticism. The spectacle of her life and death provided a template for how female figures are idolised, scrutinised and ultimately mythologised.

For the V&A, the exhibition is a chance to explore this legacy not only through artefacts of the past but also through the creativity she continues to inspire. Designers from Westwood to Moschino have reimagined her for catwalks; directors like Coppola have reinvented her for the screen. Musicians, photographers and artists have borrowed her aesthetic to explore ideas of femininity, power and excess. In all these reinventions, the queen who died more than 230 years ago has remained startlingly present.

Marie Antoinette Style promises to be a rare opportunity to encounter the woman and the myth side by side: the slippers she wore at Versailles alongside the shoes she inspired centuries later; the note she wrote before her death alongside the costumes that have brought her back to life on screen. It is both history and spectacle, biography and cultural commentary. Above all, it is a reminder that style can transcend time, and that some figures, however briefly they lived, never go out of fashion.

DANCEHALL QUEEN

Jennie Baptiste: Rhythm & Roots at Somerset

House

Somerset House is set to throw open its doors to a landmark exhibition that pulses with the energy of Black British youth culture. Jennie Baptiste: Rhythm & Roots is the first major solo show by pioneering photographer Jennie Baptiste, a visionary who has spent more than three decades capturing the style, spirit, and soundtrack of London’s Black diaspora.

From the 1990s onwards, Baptiste’s lens has been tuned into the rhythms of urban life: the swagger of Brixton’s pavements, the flamboyance of the dancehall floor, the raw power of hip-hop, and the individuality of everyday icons who shaped the city’s cultural DNA. Now, Somerset House brings together her celebrated works, rarely seen gems, and never-before-exhibited images from her personal archive. To amplify the experience, the show is paired with specially commissioned mixes from the very DJs Baptiste photographed at the height of London’s hip-hop explosion—ensuring visitors don’t just see the culture, but hear it too.

Born in London to parents who emigrated from St. Lucia in the 1960s, Baptiste’s work is steeped in authenticity. Her images honour the vibrancy of Black British culture while reflecting the global influences that shaped it—Caribbean dancehall, American hip-hop,

and the lasting impact of post-Windrush communities. As a teenager, she was drawn to collage, experimenting with layering and juxtaposition, before moving into photography. Early darkroom experiments— overlaying negatives, playing with tones, mixing developer chemicals—nurtured a practice that fused technical curiosity with a deep cultural eye. The result is a body of work that is at once documentary and artistic, immediate yet timeless.

“My photography has always been about energy,” Baptiste reflects. “It’s a personal journey, but also a celebration of the resilience and creativity within the Black British community. I hope these images encourage others to embrace their individuality and their own creative voices.”

At the heart of Rhythm & Roots is a story of community, style, and sound. The exhibition spans several of Baptiste’s most iconic series, each of which chronicles a distinct but interconnected part of Black British

cultural life. Her Dancehallseries, which she has revisited since the early 1990s, revels in the glamour, boldness, and expressive energy of London’s dancehall scene. Sequined outfits, striking poses, and the kinetic joy of the dance floor come alive in images that feel both celebratory and archival—a testament to a movement that has continually shaped British fashion and nightlife.

In Brixton Boyz, Baptiste turns her lens to the streets, capturing the camaraderie, defiance, and distinct style of young Black men in late 1990s Brixton. The portraits speak to a generation whose swagger and self-expression helped define the aesthetic of the era. Music, unsurprisingly, runs like a bassline through her work. Baptiste has photographed a roll call of influential figures, from global icons like The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige to British trailblazers such as Roots Manuva, Estelle, Ms Dynamite, and Ty. Her images do more than document; they platform the artists who gave voice to their communities and, in doing so, shaped the sound of modern Britain.

One of the exhibition’s highlights is the resurrection of Revolutions @ 33 1/3rpm, Baptiste’s 1999 portrait series of London’s hip-hop DJ scene. Originally commissioned for Levi’s Regent Street flagship store, the series features legendary figures including DJ 279, Cutmaster Swift, Dave VJ, and Shortee Blitz. More than two decades later, these portraits are being shown together for the first time since their debut. To deepen the experience, the DJs themselves have each contributed a mix spanning 1989 to 2003, played through listening stations in the gallery—echoing the record shop culture of discovery that defined the era. The result is an exhibition that is as much about sound as it is about sight.

While Baptiste is known for her documentary style, her conceptual work

also takes centre stage. Black Chains of Icon combines portraiture with layered materials, lith printing, and physical chains, interwoven with quotes from figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and lyrics from Bob Marley. The series explores themes of identity, freedom, and the weight of Black history, situating Baptiste firmly within a lineage of politically engaged artists.

Marking Somerset House’s 25th anniversary, Rhythm & Roots is both a celebration and a recognition long overdue. It honours Baptiste not just as a chronicler of culture, but as an artist whose work has shaped the very way we see British music, fashion, and youth identity. For Somerset House, the exhibition is a bold statement about the institution’s mission: to champion inclusive, trailblazing creativity that resonates far beyond its walls. For Baptiste, it’s a moment to reflect on the journey—her own,

and that of the communities whose stories she has told with such care and vibrancy.

“Through my lens,” she says, “I’ve always wanted to capture the spirit of my community—the energy, the style, the resilience. It’s about documenting history, but also about celebrating life.” Jennie Baptiste: Rhythm & Roots is exactly that: a living archive, a celebration, and a reminder of the creative power that continues to shape Britain from the ground up.

MODERNISM RETHINKING

A new exhibition at Tate Modern challenges European ideas and looks at the importance of Nigerian art in the 20th century

Tate Modern is launching the first UK exhibition to trace the development of modern art in Nigeria.

Nigerian Modernism covers half a century of work and brings together over 250 pieces by more than 50 artists, from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, textiles and works on paper. The scale alone is impressive, but what makes this exhibition significant is the story it tells. It is not simply about artists absorbing European ideas of modernism but about a generation who, across decades of upheaval, reframed what modern art could be.

The exhibition begins in the 1940s, when Nigeria was still under indirect British colonial rule. At the time, the country’s education system funnelled ambitious artists through institutions shaped by colonial priorities,

and many trained abroad. In London, they learned European academic techniques even as they encountered modernism’s fascination with African sculpture and form. The contradictions of this experience show up in their work. Aina Onabolu painted formal portraits of Lagos elites, challenging colonial prejudices about the capacity of African artists. Akinola Lasekan turned to Yoruba legends for subject matter, mixing myth with modern draftsmanship. Ben Enwonwu, now recognised as one of Nigeria’s greatest modernists, studied at the Slade but always returned to the rhythms of Igbo sculpture, which gave his figures a sense of rootedness. And Ladi Kwali, trained in ceramics by the British potter Michael Cardew, folded traditional Gwari methods into sleek, studio-ready vessels that bridged cultures. Independence in 1960 was a turning point. The Zaria Arts Society, a group of students who had chafed against rigid colonial

syllabuses, o ered a new model for Nigerian art. Members such as Uche Okeke, Yusuf Grillo and Bruce Onobrakpeya called their approach “Natural Synthesis,” combining indigenous motifs with modern techniques to create a distinctly Nigerian form of modernism. Their work set the tone for the decade, a period of optimism when Lagos became a cosmopolitan cultural hub, alive with public commissions, new architecture and Highlife music. At the same time, the Mbari Artists’ and Writers’ Club in Ibadan drew together figures like Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka, linking visual art with literature and theatre

Other artists looked beyond politics to spirituality and local traditions. In Osogbo, Susanne Wenger and the New Sacred Art Movement fused Yoruba cosmology with monumental cement sculptures that reshaped the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, still a UNESCO site today. Workshops at

Duro Ladipo’s Popular Bar produced another Osogbo circle: Nike Davies-Okundaye, Twins Seven Seven and others, largely self-taught, who drew on Yoruba myths and personal narratives in ways that blurred fine art, performance and folklore.

Then came rupture. The Nigerian Civil War of 1967–70 devastated the country and its artists. Unity gave way to division, and artistic practice became a way of processing trauma. Many turned to uli, a traditional Igbo system of linear designs, usually drawn by women and used for both decoration and ritual.

Uche Okeke had already begun to explore uli before the war, and his work gained new resonance in the aftermath. At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, a younger generation took uli further, abstracting its forms into a modernist idiom that was both an assertion of cultural identity and a record of conflict.

The exhibition closes with Uzo Egonu, a

painter who left Nigeria for Britain in the 1940s and remained there for the rest of his life. His Stateless Peopleseries from the 1980s, shows solitary figures – a musician, an artist, a writer – caught between memory and exile. The paintings ask what it means to belong to a nation when one lives outside it, and in doing so they extend the exhibition’s themes beyond Nigeria’s borders to the global diaspora.

What Nigerian Modernism makes clear is that modernism was never a one-way import from Europe. In Nigeria, it was a process of negotiation: between tradition and innovation, colonial legacies and the desire for independence, national identity and global movement. The exhibition reframes Nigeria not as a peripheral chapter in modern art but as one of its central laboratories. By gathering these works together, Tate Modern is not only filling a gap in British art history but also inviting audiences to rethink modernism itself—as a dialogue, a conflict, and ultimately a reinvention led by artists who imagined a di erent future for themselves and their country.

buzz

Silent Pool Gin has made its name as a premium English spirit, known for its crisp, layered character and botanicals drawn straight from the natural world. But there’s another story quietly unfolding— one rooted in ecology, sustainability, and a very small, very vital creature: the bee.

Launched by the distillery, The Beehive Collective is more than just a nod to one of their signature ingredients, local honey. It’s a charitable initiative designed to protect and restore pollinator populations at home and abroad, while weaving together communities of growers, makers, and drinkers under a shared mission. At its heart lies a simple conviction: without bees, not only does Silent Pool Gin lose part of its soul, but our ecosystems and food systems collapse with it.

The Beehive Collective channels Silent Pool’s reach and resources into supporting Bees for Development, a UK-based charity that has been helping communities build sustainable livelihoods through beekeeping for over 30 years. By promoting low-cost, ecologically sound beekeeping practices, the organisation has improved biodiversity while

lifting thousands of people out of poverty.

The partnership has already taken root in visible ways. At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Bees for Development presented a striking balcony garden exhibit, designed to demonstrate how even the smallest urban space can provide sanctuary for pollinators.

The Beehive Collective’s backing brought the project to life and spotlighted bee conservation to an audience of gardeners, designers, and environmental advocates.

Silent Pool is working with bars, restaurants, and venues to inspire pollinatorfriendly practices, from installing hives to planting bee-supportive gardens. The goal is not only ecological—it’s cultural. By making pollinator protection part of the dining and drinking experience, The Beehive Collective invites people to connect sustainability with pleasure.

Ambition for The Beehive Collective stretches beyond events and partnerships. In 2026, Silent Pool will fund an apprentice beekeeper who will work with communities to establish and maintain new apiaries in the UK, Italy, and the US. This hands-on approach is designed to create long-term, localised impact: more hives, healthier bee populations, and wider awareness of pollinator conservation.

Silent Pool Gin is partnering with Cli on Nurseries to host The Bee’s Garden, an immersive consumer event featuring an introduction to The Beehive Collective, a Bee’s Knees cocktail masterclass, and a hands-on planting workshop where guests will pot their own bee-friendly blooms to take home for spring. All proceeds will support Bees for Development, Silent Pool Gin’s charity partner, which promotes sustainable beekeeping to strengthen livelihoods, combat poverty, and protect biodiversity.

Tickets £25 per person. Sessions will take place at 12pm, 3pm and 5:30pm on 8, 9 and 10 October. Tickets can be purchased at silentpooldistillers.com

In an era when “green” branding can feel like empty marketing, The Beehive Collective stands out by committing to tangible action— funding apprenticeships, supporting global charities, and changing industry practices. It’s proof that a luxury brand can harness its influence for ecological good, while reminding us of a timeless truth: the smallest creatures often have the biggest impact.

REAL Indian

Simple home cooking from the co-founder of Hoppers restaurants

Words KARAN GOKANI

Aloo Matar

Serves 2 as a main

This simple, quick and incredibly delicious potato and pea curry is a staple in homes across India, particularly in the north. I love eating it with steamed basmati rice or Fulkas drizzled with ghee. It epitomizes Indian home cooking and showcases the contrast between simple, tasty food cooked at home versus the richer, restaurant-style dishes o en associated with Indian cuisine. While both have their place, if you’re unfamiliar with the former, this is a great recipe to start with. People usually boil potatoes before adding them to curries or stir-fries, but I’ve found that boiling them in the gravy gives them a much deeper flavour. I use Maris Pipers, but any good all-purpose potato will work well.

INGREDIENTS

• 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 4cm cubes

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee

• 1 tsp cumin seeds

• 2 bay leaves

• 80g red onions, finely chopped

• up to 2 tsp salt, to taste

• 1 tsp each grated ginger and garlic

• 1 tsp ground turmeric

• 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder

• ½ tsp ground cumin

• ¾ tsp ground coriander

• 150g ripe fresh tomatoes, finely chopped (or 120g tinned chopped tomatoes)

• 150g frozen peas

• 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander, plus more to garnish

• juice of ½ lime

METHOD

1 Wash the potatoes in running water to get rid of the excess starch and drain well. Set aside.

2 Heat the oil in a pan set over a medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Once they crackle, add the bay leaves and the onions, with ½ teaspoon of salt to ensure they cook evenly.

3 Once the onions have softened, add the ginger and garlic and fry everything for a couple of minutes.

4 Add the spices and fry for 30 seconds. Then add the tomatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become thick and some of the oil rises to the surface, about 8–10 minutes.

5 Add the potatoes, along with enough water just to cover them. Put a lid on the pan and cook on a low heat for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes have cooked through and a knife or skewer pierces them with ease.

6 Add the peas and cook for another 3–4 minutes.

7 Stir in the chopped coriander and lime juice and check the seasoning, adding more salt as needed. Serve, garnished with more fresh coriander.

Salmon Tikka

Serves 4 as a starter or snack

Salmon isn’t a fish that you typically find in Indian waters, as it is native to colder climates. However, Indian restaurants across the UK have been serving variations of tandoori salmon for years, and it’s now a regular on menus. The spiced yoghurt marinade pairs exceptionally well with salmon, while the natural fattiness of the fish ensures that it remains moist and juicy when cooked over a high heat, such as a grill or in a tandoor. If you’re preparing this dish in a region where salmon isn’t readily available, you can easily substitute it with any local oily fish. Fish like trout, halibut, sea bass, bream, snapper, barramundi and Arctic char work wonderfully.

INGREDIENTS

• 800g salmon fillet, cut into 4 equal pieces

For the marinade

• 1 tsp each ginger and garlic paste

• 1 tsp crushed kasoori methi (dried fenugreek leaves)

• ½ tsp ground turmeric

• ½ tsp fennel seeds

• ½ tsp garam masala

(see page 267 for homemade)

• ¼ tsp crushed black peppercorns

• 2 tbsp Greek-style yoghurt

• 1 egg white (optional)

• 2 tbsp cream cheese

• 1 green chilli, finely chopped

• 6 green cardamom pods, seeds crushed to a powder

• 2 tbsp melted butter, plus more to garnish

• 1 tsp salt

To garnish

• 1 tsp chaat masala (see page 266 for homemade)

• a few dill leaves

METHOD

1 Mix all the ingredients for the marinade in a large mixing bowl and coat the salmon pieces in it. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2 Barbecue the salmon pieces or place in a roasting tray and bake at 200–220°C fan for 12–15 minutes until charred in spots but still pink in the middle. If the salmon has not got spots of char after this time, switch the oven to grill mode on the maximum setting and place the tray on the top shelf for a further minute or two.

3 Drizzle the salmon with melted butter and sprinkle over the chaat masala and dill leaves before serving.

Achari Chicken, Two Ways

Serves 4 as a main

Achar translates as ‘pickle’ in Hindi, and achari chicken is cooked with spices typically used in north Indian pickles – fenugreek, nigella, mustard and fennel seeds are all tempered in pungent mustard oil. It’s a dish that tests your spice collection. If you’re short on some or not keen on expanding your larder, use the storebought pickle hack below. I’ve provided two equally effective, yet very different, ways to cook this unique dish. The traditional method uses a pan, wok or kadhai, resulting in a delicious meat curry, while the easier traybake version produces a fantastic single-tray weeknight meal or a centrepiece for an alternative Sunday roast. While I recommend making the achari spice mix from scratch, for a quicker version you can use 2 tablespoons of store-bought spicy mango or green chilli pickle. Be sure to find the most authentic Punjabi pickle you can, and avoid using sweet pickles or mango chutney. If you’re using a Punjabi pickle, these are usually made with mustard oil, so you can swap the mustard oil in the recipe for any neutral oil unless you already have mustard oil to hand.

INGREDIENTS

• 1.5kg chicken legs, skinless, cut into thighs and drumsticks

• 250ml chicken stock

• 1 tbsp tomato purée

• 1 head of garlic, cut in half through the middle

• 5cm ginger, sliced in half horizontally

• 1 large red onion, cut into 6 cubes

• a handful of Padrón peppers (optional)

• a pinch of salt

• 1 tbsp mustard oil

• 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

For the marinade

• 1½ tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder

• ½ tsp ground turmeric

• 1 tsp garlic paste

• 2 tsp ginger paste

• 2 tbsp mustard oil (or any neutral oil)

• 250g Greek-style yoghurt

• 3 tbsp Punjabi chilli pickle or mango pickle

• 1½ tsp salt

To garnish

• juice of 1/2 lime

• 5cm ginger, cut into matchsticks

• 1 small red onion, cut into thin rings

• 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander

METHOD

1 Mix the ingredients for the marinade and rub all over the chicken pieces. Refrigerate the marinated chicken for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight. The salt, ginger and garlic ensure that the meat stays succulent and moist, so don’t skip this step! Mix any leftover marinade with the stock and tomato purée, and set aside. We will add this yoghurty stock to the roasting tray later to create the tastiest sauce.

2 Take the chicken out of the fridge 30 minutes before cooking- this ensures it doesn’t overcook on the outside while staying raw on the inside. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan.

3 When ready to cook, toss the garlic, ginger, onion and peppers (if using) in salt and oil and place in a tray or wide dish that’s large enough to accommodate the chicken on top later. Roast the vegetables in the oven for about 8 minutes, until just beginning to colour.

4 Add the yoghurt, stock mixture and the vinegar to the oven tray and mix it into the vegetables using a spoon. Place the chicken pieces on top of the vegetables and roast for 30–40 minutes, giving the tray a little shake and stir halfway through.

5 If at any point the chicken starts to colour too much, cover loosely with a piece of foil. Conversely, if the bird doesn’t colour, raise the temperature to 220°C fan for the final 15 minutes.

6 Once fully cooked, squeeze over the lime juice and garnish with ginger, onion rings and coriander.

the traybake version

This is a great centrepiece for an alternative Sunday roast. I like to use a whole spatchcocked chicken weighing 1.2–1.5kg for this. Follow the same recipe, adding about 10 minutes to the cooking time in step 5 below. If, on the other hand, you are cooking for one, simply quarter this recipe and cook it in an air fryer at 180°C for 25–30 minutes. For a vegetarian achari traybake, try this recipe with a whole cauliflower and substitute the chicken stock with vegetable stock. Marinate the cauliflower in step 1 for about 10 minutes, then wrap it and roast it alongside the vegetables in step 4. Unwrap, drizzle with some oil or melted butter, place on top of the vegetables and roast for about 15–20 minutes in step 5. Finally place under the grill for 3–4 minutes on max heat to colour, if it hasn’t already browned evenly.

The Room Where it Happens

Cocktails – the musical

The Room Where It Happens isn’t just a bar—it’s a full-blown musical theatre experience. Walk through the door on Greek Street and you’re met with candlelit tables, shimmering gold ceilings, and red velvet curtains that make you feel like you’ve wandered backstage at the West End. But the real magic is the sta . Your servers are also performers — actors between shows who swap from pouring cocktails to belting out show tunes without missing a beat. One minute they’re carrying your drink, the next they’re leading the room in a rousing chorus. By 9pm, the piano kicks in and the whole place transforms into a giant singalong, with everyone joining in like an impromptu cast. The drinks menu leans into the theme, with cocktails inspired by musicals and classics given a dramatic twist. If you want to start strong, go for The Waitress’ Pie-Tini—a sweet, dessert-style martini that feels like curtain call in a glass. Pair it with a round of sharing plates and you’re set for the night. Early in the evening, it’s cosy and relaxed, perfect for a catchup. But as the night unfolds, the energy ramps up and the room comes alive.

It’s part bar, part cabaret, part party. In short: pure theatre magic, with cocktails..

The Art of Watchmaking; Prestons’

Authorised Rolex Service Centres

Here, we talk with Prestons After Sales team about their experience working at each of their service centres, the journey to servicing your Rolex watch and the relationships they have built with their clients over the last 5 years.

Opened in February , the first Prestons Rolex Authorised Service Centre is located on the first oor of Prestons Wilmslow whilst the second, opened in , is located in Prestons Norwich. Each is equipped to Rolex’s exacting standards, ensuring every timepiece is serviced with meticulous care, technical expertise and the personal commitment that makes Preston’s so special.

Did you always know you wanted to work with watches?

Steve: “I think I knew very early on I could only have been years old. I remember vividly my mother seeing an advert in the local newspaper and saying to me “you enjoy taking things apart, why don’t you have a go at this ” I read the advert and have been a watchmaker ever since. I suppose I have my mother to thank for where I am today.”

Ryan: “I started out selling watches rather than servicing them but quickly discovered a passion for watchmaking. I am now a Rolex-trained technician, and it is my dream to become a Rolex watchmaker in future.”

Nick: “I initially began my career in a creative role but have always been intrigued by watches. I fell in love with the engineering that goes into these timepieces and seized an opportunity to enrol on a WOST P polishing course.

The WOSTEP Foundation is an internationally recognised watchmaking institution based in Swit erland, founded in 1966, it is an incredible place for those aspiring to work in the watch industry.

I find that polishing combines my creative and technical interests, as there is true beauty in restoring a watch to its original condition while preserving its unique character. I have now been a Rolex-trained polisher for two years, and I am so pleased to be part of the team at Prestons supporting each of our clients.”

Ryan O’Connell

What does it mean to be a Rolex-trained watchmaker?

Ryan: “ ach watchmaker working within our service centre is specially trained by Rolex to ensure consistent quality across all their operations worldwide. Here at Prestons, we are always on hand when a client brings their watch into the showroom. As the first to make a technical examination of a client’s timepiece, we see the memories in every case.”

Saul: “I started my journey to becoming a Rolex-trained watchmaker at the British School of Watchmaking in Manchester, it was a fascinating experience and only deepened my passion for horology. I have been a qualified watchmaker for five years now and I’m based at Prestons Wilmslow, it brings me so much oy to work amongst my passion each day. The team and I know these wristwatches have been worn and loved, often for decades, and we feel proud to be trusted with their care”

Can you tell us about a memorable watch you have serviced?

Joseph: “ very watch that comes through our workshop has a story, but some can really leave a lasting impression. One service that stands out in my memory was for a client whose grandfather had worn the watch almost daily for more than forty years. The team and I could see the character in the case and bracelet – all the little marks, scratches and details that build up over a lifetime of love and wear. For me, servicing that watch felt like we were helping to preserve a piece of their family history, a memory in some way. It is moments like that, that remind us how much these watches can mean to the people who wear them and to the next generation.”

What advice would you give on the care of a Rolex watch?

Steve: “The fitting of the watch onto a wrist is so important. ach of our dedicated team members are trained and therefore able to advise on the size of the bracelet to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.”

Nick: “Rolex watches are designed to be worn and loved every day. Over the years, it is natural for scratches and marks to appear. We would advise keeping to the servicing schedule rather than bringing the timepieces in for polishing whenever it sustains a scratch, and only ever entrusting the watch to a Rolex-trained polisher. This will help to ensure the longevity of the watch and keep it looking its best for decades to come.”

“Every watch that comes through our workshop has a story, but some can really leave a lasting impression”

Rolex Servicing: Movement Extraction

What makes the Rolex Servicing process so special?

Joseph: “Rolex watches are designed and built to last. The service process begins from the moment a client brings their wristwatch to one of our showrooms and continues through to its return, complete with its two-year international guarantee.

The servicing of a Rolex watch comprises several detailed steps requiring the use of specific tools and instruments that are tested and sometimes even developed by the brand. I love how meticulous every step is, nothing is rushed and every detail matters.

The team and I begin the service process by separating the bracelet from the case and carefully removing the movement. From that point on, the movement, case and bracelet each follow their own dedicated servicing path.

Each component is carefully examined to determine whether it still meets Rolex requirements, cleaned, dried, lubricated and carefully reassembled piece by piece. The case, bracelet and parts are individually re-polished or satin-finished by hand by myself or another member of our workshop team.

Once reassembled, the watch is tested for accuracy, precision and waterproofness as well as pressure-tested to ensure it meets the expected chronometric performance set by Rolex. At the end of the process, the timepiece is placed in a specialist pouch and is presented back to the client by one of our dedicated sales consultants. It is an incredibly detailed and rewarding process.”

“There is true beauty in restoring a watch to its original condition while preserving its unique character”

Rolex Servicing: Quality Control Checks
“Our service centres in Wilmslow and Norwich ensure the highest standards are maintained across all our watchmaking services”
Steve Tillston, Head Watchmaker at Prestons Wilmslow

What do you think having an in-house Rolex Authorised Service Centre brings to Prestons and their clients?

Jake: “It offers in-house expertise to each of our clients, as often we are client-facing in the showroom or the Service Centre. The team and I genuinely love to show our clients the servicing process and guide them through the work that will be undertaken on their timepiece.”

Ryan: “When a client brings a watch to us, it can be a great act of trust. I remember we were once visited by a lady who had received her watch as a bequest from her mother. The timepiece was unfortunately in need of significant repairs, and she was nervous about any changes we might make to it. I was so glad to be able to speak with her in person, so that she could be reassured that the character and sentiment of the watch would remain intact.”

Andrew: “It is so important for our clients to know that we offer full servicing in-house. For me, it is a great way for both new and existing clients to see firsthand the trusted team that will service and look after their watch, knowing it is in safe hands. The process in some respects feels so personal and therefore being able to meet with myself, or a member of our after sales team really builds trust.”

What makes the Prestons Experience so special?

Steve: “Here at Prestons, we operate to traditional values of service and quality. Our service centres in Wilmslow and Norwich ensure the highest standards are maintained across all our watchmaking services, while our showrooms allow us to meet with and understand our clients’ needs.”

Laura: “Whether a client brings their watch into us at Prestons Guildford, or at one of our other locations, each of our Rolex Authorised Service Centres ensures they can trust that it receives our personal care at every step of the process”

Steve, Joseph and their teams look forward to supporting and advising Prestons’ clients for years to come. From all at Prestons, we look forward to welcoming you to our showrooms soon.

ZERO WASTE

AKT’s revolutionary, aluminiumsalts free formula transforms from a luxurious, skin-nourishing balm into a dry, invisible powder: actively protecting, deodorising, and absorbing perspiration. aktlondon.com

o pain, no gain, they say. Well they’re wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like you’ve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because there’s certainly no physical pain – and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches – but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and she’ll tell you that directly. In fact, she’ll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, it’s a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. “I’ll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?” asks Karen’s assistant. The answer’s a firm yes. I’m never going back to terrible brows.

LIFT OFF

Carly Glendinning gets serious about weight lifting with Personal Trainer, Charlotte Dunn

The weights area in my gym is definitely no longer a totally male-dominated area, but for some reason I still felt intimidated. Blame it on being a Millenial (yawn!), but the mere thought of being 'mansplained' or o ered help to move the bench was enough to put me o . The time had come, however, to take my weight lifting to the next level, so I decided to enlist Personal Trainer Charlotte Dunn to work with me on my confidence. Super warm and genuinely lovely to work with, Charlotte specialises in creating 1:1 training programmes. She blends a variety of methods including strength training,

cardiovascular work, and Pilates, working with her clients face-to-face in her luxurious fitness studio in Mayfair or virtually.

We started with a video consultation where I explained my goals and we chatted through my existing routine. Charlotte came back with a smart, glute-focused plan.

As my strength built, we took things up a notch. I took Charlotte on-camera with me to the gym, where she virtually held my hand through my first barbell lifts and laid the groundwork for pull-up training, something I’d always wanted to do. Charlotte encouraged me to lift heavier, train with intention,

and own my space on the gym floor. Her ultra-approachable coaching style made every session feel empowering. But what really stood out was how she gave me the tools (and belief!) to level up.

This October, breast consultants from New Victoria Hospital are drawing attention to an important message: women with dense breast tissue may require more than standard mammogram screening to detect cancer early and improve survival rates.

WHY BREAST DENSITY MATTERS

Dense breast tissue is a common finding, a ecting about 40% of women between the ages of 50 and 71. The challenge: both dense tissue and tumours appear white on a mammogram, making it di cult to pick up early cancers when they’re most treatable. Up to 10% of women have “very dense” breasts, a group that not only faces an elevated risk of breast cancer but is also more likely to have cancers missed by mammography alone.

Recent research from the University of Cambridge found that enhanced screening for women with dense breasts could detect an extra 3,500 cases of cancer and potentially save 700 lives each year. The National Screening Committee in the UK is reviewing whether additional screening should be routinely o ered to this group, but as of now, the NHS calls women for screening every three years between ages 50 and 71, regardless of breast density.

This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we discuss why women with dense breasts should consider more than just a mammogram

SCREENING FOR WOMEN IN THEIR 40S

For many women, breast tissue is naturally denser in their 40s. Consultant breast surgeons like Ms Katerina Micha at New Victoria Hospital in Kingston upon Thames recommend women in this age group consider independent screening. At New Victoria Hospital, asymptomatic women over 40, who haven't had a mammogram in the past year, can self refer and self pay. Early detection at this stage dramatically increases treatment options and survival rates. “Asymptomatic women over 40, even those without a family history, can take charge of their breast health and gain reassurance from regular checks,” Ms Micha explains. “Early diagnosis is absolutely critical—it leads to far better outcomes.”

RAPID, COMPREHENSIVE BREAST ASSESSMENTS

For those seeking a thorough evaluation, New Victoria Hospital o ers One-Stop Breast Clinic services, providing a clinical breast exam, mammogram and/or ultrasound, and biopsy if needed, on the same day. 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) help detect tumours in dense breasts more e ectively. If you notice a lump or any abnormal changes, rapid access to expert assessment is crucial. While most breast lumps are not cancer, every change should be professionally checked.

THE VALUE OF SELF-CHECKS

Regular self-examination remains an important practice. New Victoria Hospital’s Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon Ms Chloe Constantinou urges women to check their breasts monthly. She recommends examining in good light, checking for lumps, skin changes, or changes in the nipples—including shape, inversion, or discharge. Swelling in the armpit is another sign that should not be ignored.

EARLY ACTION MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Early detection not only raises survival rates, but often allows for less invasive treatments. Smaller cancers can typically be treated with breast-conserving surgery, and outcomes are excellent.

The bottom line: if you have dense breasts or a family history of cancer, don’t wait. Knowledge, vigilance, and regular checks are powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer.

How the private members’ club aesthetic is leading the way in home design

CLUB CULT URE

Private members’ clubs have always had a magnetic pull. Behind their discreet doors in Mayfair townhouses, Shoreditch warehouses or Covent Garden palaces, lie enchanting worlds: velvetdraped lounges, candlelit corners, curated art, and the unmistakable hum of conviviality. While membership remains elusive for many, the interiors of these clubs have begun to influence how Londoners want to live at home. The private members’ club aesthetic—once synonymous with old-school formality— has become a modern design language of intimacy, tactility, and atmosphere.

Over the past decade, this aesthetic has diversified dramatically. The velvetand-leather grandeur of Annabel’s is not the same as the industrial chic of Shoreditch House or the contemporary polish of The Arts Club. Each interprets the same idea – spaces that feel exclusive, cocooning, and social through different stylistic vocabularies. Increasingly, designers are distilling these moods into private residences, giving homeowners a slice of club-like comfort that works for everyday life.

Take Soho House, the trailblazer of relaxed luxury. Its interiors, shaped by figures like Ilse Crawford and Vicky Charles, favour layered textures, flattering light, and a lived-in eclecticism. Sofas are low and generous, art hangs salon-style, and vintage rugs anchor mismatched chairs. The vibe is at once cosmopolitan and informal, designed for a Sunday afternoon nap as easily as a latenight party. For many, this interpretation of club design feels closest to modern

THE ZETTER, BLOOMSBURY

London living: global, democratic, stylish without pretension.

By contrast, The Ned in the City takes inspiration from its grand 1920s building. Its interiors, created by Soho House Design, are a masterclass in atmosphere: bankinghall ceilings soar above marble counters, while private lounges retreat into low-lit intimacy. At home, this translates into a combination of monumental architecture and intimate detailing: statement lighting in dining rooms, then velvet armchairs tucked into alcoves for quiet conversation. Annabel’s, redesigned by Martin Brudnizki, remains the most flamboyant expression of club luxury. It revels in maximalism: jewel-toned velvets, lacquered walls, extravagant chandeliers, and fantastical murals. For some homeowners, this is the inspiration—rooms that surprise, seduce, and make every evening feel like

theatre. Brudnizki himself has described the aim as creating “a house of joy,” a phrase that resonates with anyone who believes interiors should transport as much as they shelter.

One of the most anticipated additions to this landscape is The Zetter Bloomsbury, set to open early next year. Located just steps from the British Museum, this boutique hotel occupies six 300-year-old Georgian townhouses, seamlessly blending original architectural details with carefully curated interiors. Designed by James Thurstan Waterworth, former European Design Director of Soho House, the hotel promises to offer a "home away from home" experience, characterized by its eclectic and original interiors that resonate with the building's history and surroundings . 180 House on The Strand demonstrates another evolution: contemporary

minimalism softened with texture. Its roof terraces and lounges rely less on ornament and more on proportion, palette, and light. The lesson here is restraint—creating impact not through clutter but through space, natural materials, and carefully chosen objects. A London flat designed in this spirit might feature oak floors, plaster walls in warm neutrals, and just a handful of sculptural furniture pieces, all illuminated by pools of warm light.

Meanwhile, Home House in Marylebone embraces heritage with a playful twist. Its Georgian architecture provides the bones— sweeping staircases, grand windows— while interiors lean into conviviality with bold colour and dramatic flourishes. For a homeowner, it suggests a design ethos of respecting the building’s history while daring to be bold in the details. At The Lansdowne Club in Mayfair, recently refurbished suites feature clean lines, soft neutral tones, and refined finishes that create a calm, modern atmosphere. Walnut timbers and subtle metallic details add warmth without overwhelming the space. Sleek integrated technology, such as discreet LED lighting and wired headboards, ensures comfort and convenience while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. The overall effect is a seamless blend of timeless sophistication with a distinctly modern sensibility.

Across these clubs, certain principles repeat. Lighting is always intimate, never harsh. Furniture encourages lingering, from velvet banquettes to leather club chairs. Art is curated with personality, not just decoration—whether a wall of contemporary

British painting at Soho House or eclectic pieces hung salon-style at The Arts Club. Texture is paramount: layered fabrics, warm woods, polished metals, and handmade ceramics combine to make every surface feel considered. Above all, these interiors prize atmosphere, creating environments that feel both special and comfortable.

Designers working in this sphere often cross the boundary between clubs and private commissions. Martin Brudnizki, David Collins Studio, and Bryan O’Sullivan are among the names shaping London’s most glamorous interiors, whether for hospitality or for residential clients who want a touch of that club magic at home. Their projects prove that the aesthetic is not about copying one particular club but about distilling a sensibility: rooms that feel cocooning, tactile, and social, designed as much for hosting as for retreat.

For homeowners, translating the private members’ club aesthetic doesn’t necessarily require a ballroom-sized budget. A few key gestures can transform a room: swapping ceiling spotlights for shaded lamps and sconces; choosing jewel tones or earthy palettes instead of stark whites; investing in a velvet sofa or a leather armchair; curating a gallery wall of art that feels personal; styling a bar cabinet with cut-crystal glassware and favourite spirits. Even a small snug or study can take on the intimacy of a club if it layers light, texture, and mood.

As the boundaries between work, leisure, and home continue to blur, the

“A club-inspired home does not shout for attention; it envelops”

club aesthetic offers a way to make domestic spaces more versatile and atmospheric. In an age of transparency and digital overload, the allure of privacy and atmosphere feels more luxurious than ever. A club-inspired home does not shout for attention; it envelops. It suggests that the greatest indulgence is not excess, but belonging—to a circle, to a ritual, to a room that feels like a world of its own. London’s clubs each interpret that idea differently, from the maximalist fantasy of Annabel’s to the relaxed eclecticism of Shoreditch House. Yet together they form a language of modern luxury that is no longer confined to membership lists. With imagination and careful design, it can live within the walls of your own home.

Iconic design is a combination of simplicity, aesthetics and functionality

PARTY PIECE

Carl Hansen & Søn presents a wider version of Børge Mogensen’s hunting table from 1950

The Hunting Table embodies Børge Mogensen’s unique ability to merge robust craftsmanship with aesthetic, functional details in which the materials speak for themselves. After relaunching the table in its original dimensions in 2018, Carl Hansen & Søn is now introducing a wider, more spacious version to accommodate larger dinner parties.

The structural design of the Hunting Table comprises two solid-wood trestles with angled legs supporting a slim veneer tabletop with rounded corners and solid-wood edging. Stability is maximized by two diagonal brace bars mounted between the frame and tabletop in brass or stainless steel - a functional touch that accentuates the table’s handcrafted expression. Another refined detail is showcased in the table legs’ through-tenon joint, secured with contrasting wood wedges, meticulously hand-sanded and finished by the skilled artisans at Carl Hansen & Søn.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn said: “Børge Mogensen originally designed the elegant Hunting Table for the Cabinetmaker Guild’s Furniture Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1950 under the theme ‘The Hunting Cabin’, for which he also designed the BM1106 Huntsman Chair. These tables bear the distinct hallmark of Børge Mogensen by uniting his sense for simplicity and complexity in an exquisite design. After several years on the market, we’ve experienced an increasing demand for a wider version of the Hunting Table, which is why we’re pleased to present this spacious table that seats eight.”

Shrimps for breakfast C

A look at the cult fashion brand’s new homeware collection

ult fashion brand Shrimps has launched a limitededition 21-piece tableware collection that makes breakfast look as good as it tastes. The result? A table dressed as thoughtfully as an outfit.

The idea comes straight from designer Hannah Weiland’s own kitchen table. The Shrimps founder has always treasured slow Sunday mornings spent with her family, bagels piled high and conversation flowing. Those cosy rituals became the heartbeat of this collection: pieces that don’t just serve food but celebrate the act of gathering. Every plate, mug, and jug feels designed to spark joy, capture a mood, and turn brunch into a little ceremony.

And then there’s Lenny. The lion—drawn by Weiland herself—prowls playfully through the range, appearing as a sculptural butter dish, a subtle motif on ceramics, and even as part of the collection’s storytelling thread. He’s more than decoration; he’s a mascot of sorts, representing strength, warmth, and the creative bond between the two brands. It’s these details that elevate the tableware beyond utility into something with real personality.

“I wanted to capture the calm and considered moments of brunch,” says Weiland. “The lion felt right—both strong and friendly, a symbol that ties the collection together. We also reimagined texture, which has always been such an important part of Shrimps’ fashion identity. Translating the tactile feel of our knitwear into ceramics was a chal-

lenge, but also really exciting.”

That focus on texture shows. From delicately twisted candlesticks to sculptural, hand-finished mugs, the collection feels alive with touch and form. The colour palette sings too: pops of coral pink, acid yellow, marmalade orange, and terracotta dance across a neutral backdrop, creating a playful yet harmonious mix. Vintage-inspired silhouettes ground the brighter tones, while Lenny’s hand-drawn presence ties everything together with a wink of charm.

It’s easy to imagine these pieces becoming part of daily rituals—morning coffee in a coral mug, or a dinner party lit by those twisting candlesticks. Like Shrimps’ clothing, they feel characterful, witty, and a little bit collectible, destined for Instagram feeds as much as kitchen cupboards.

The collection is a collaboration with Oliver Bonas, blending the store’s eye for lifestyle design with Shrimps’ reputation for o eat creativity and’ playful, fashionforward spirit.

TASTE MAKERS

The home of the late Gretchen Andersen, founder of The Lacquer Chest, is featured in a new book dedicated to authentic and individual style

Gretchen Andersen followed the ebbs and flows of the antiques trade with the keen intelligence of a trawler-skipper working the seabed’s teeming floor. In the fluxes of the mid-20th century, she had seen that the past was a foreign country full of wonderful things that no one else seemed to value. Everybody shopped at her shop, The Lacquer Chest – pop stars, Terence Conran, Elizabeth David, David Hockney, Lucian Freud. Gretchen used her sophisticated seeing eye to seek out the things that the past had discarded, always ‘buying for herself ’, and soon her customers just wanted the things that she liked and wanted too.

Her little stuccoed house was more of a cottage, at the end of a cul-de-sac near Kensington High Street reached by a bowery path between two rows of short front gardens. It was full of wonderful things, but it’s the colours and paint on the walls that I return to whenever I think of it, for hers was the palette that I held in my mind when we moved into a new-old house a couple of years ago.

Gretchen’s decorating style was thrifty and self-invented, too. There were impossible-to-copy wallpapers such as the 3-shillings- a-roll marbled paper from a closing down sale, on her staircase, but I did borrow the way she’d painted the window frames and glazing bars in with the mossy green colour on the walls of her bedroom. She said that this was

decorating the way the French do it and it makes the room look bigger: ‘I think the English pick out everything in white.’ Her knocked-through back kitchen was painted by someone she fondly described as a ‘difficult genius’, a colourist who used nine different yellows and then added a single muted lavender stripe to one ceiling rafter.

It felt like being inside a light box, elevating the zany perfection of a red and white tin colander hanging by the sink into an art installation. Best of all was to sit on the Windsor chairs at the kitchen table for tea – and her gripping, omnivorous talk.

Estate of mind

Ram House on the Dulwich Estate is an impressive scheme by Zac Monro Architects. Absolutely chats to him about the project

Q What was on the site when you first saw it? Did you retain anything of the original building?

A The Dulwich Estate is one of London’s most acclaimed examples of suburban modernism — and it’s entering a new chapter as a new generation looks to adapt these houses for 21st-century living. ZMA as a practice has been deeply involved in this transformation, reimagining these homes with a balance of respect for their heritage and a push toward sustainability. In this case, we rebuilt the house next door, so the owners knew us and were keen to explore possibilities for their house.

Though it did have some charm, there was a lot wrong with it. It sat uncomfortably on the site, with oddly shaped garden spaces; it had small openings and low ceilings, and the

beautiful mature trees that surrounded it were causing the foundations to wobble and the walls to crack, so something had to be done. More importantly, the house wasn’t doing justice to its exceptional location.

Q What did the clients want in terms of living space?

AThe main thing they wanted was a sense of transparent open plan living, spaces that give onto and flowed into the garden, somewhere where the leafy shadows of those big oak trees would permeate deep into the plan of the house throughout the seasons.

Practically, they wanted a core to the house that connected these main spaces with their master suite, and then two separate zones one for the artist studio and another for the guest bedrooms.

And crucially, they also wanted garden spaces that were part of the living spaces.

Q You changed the orientation of the house - how does that work? Is that something you have done before?

A When we’re working on a house, especially a new build, we’re always looking at the orientation: where the sun rises, where the sun sets, where you might want to sit and have a cup of tea in the morning, for example. We’re also looking at the critical views, and the kind of external rooms that are created by the architecture.

In this case the existing house didn’t face any of the gardens, it just broke them up, so re-orientating enabled us to make the house face a bigger, more open garden square. This not only made for a more human connection, it also created two other gardens: a more private courtyard

garden to at the back and a bigger, more open welcoming front garden. Having a house correctly orientated in the setting goes a long way to making it feel like it belongs there, and does the same for its inhabitants.

Q What was the primary goal with the house: light flow, sustainability, aesthetics?

A Inside, the main goal was to be able to feel a sense of connection with this urban rural setting. This often means a sense of transparency, being able to see from one side to the other, always having glimpses out onto nature and a sense of overall openness in the internal spaces.

Outside, the primary goal was to make the house something appropriate to the setting and surrounding architecture, harmonious but also a little bold.

Q Tell us about the materials used.

A In order to keep the human scale, the house reads as three distinct volumes with their own materials. The main upper volume is made up of specialist clay tiles. That volume is balanced between a dark wooden and a white rendered block, leaving lots of space between them for an open-plan layout. The ground plane then comes into its own as polished concrete surface that moves seamlessly through the house from one garden to another.

In terms of structure, the openness requires a steel frame, but everything else is timber frame and sustainable installation to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible.

Q Was planning permission straightforward?

A When is Planning ever straightforward!

And in this case, you have the added complication of needing permission from the Dulwich Estate who have an unappealable right of veto. As we’ve been here before, we took that into account, being careful with pre-applications, and discussions, and involving the neighbours. When we made our case clearly with the issues of subsidence and poor energy use, it was a case of either the trees or the building. So in this case we kept the trees and rebuilt the building.

Q Was this project different to anything you had done before?

A Every project is different, that’s a wonderful thing about working with different clients. Of course, we have a wealth of experience with this kind of project, but people tend to come to us because of our approach. Clients were brave enough to be quite bold, and that’s what has made Ram House such a unique house on the street.

For us it’s the latest version in our crusade to upgrade these kind of midcentury-rooted homes, homes that you find slightly unloved all over the country.

Q And as a practice, what would you say your signature is?

A We are known for Inside out homes (hence the name of our Amazon TV series), and all our projects, be they extensions, renovations, barn-conversions or newbuild houses, focus on that connection to the outside world. As a result we’ve often found ourselves balancing heritage and innovation in a sort of urban-rural setting. We like buildings to be as light and as human as they can be.

DECO

Tthe former site of famed Mayfair restaurant, Mirabelle, once frequented by notable figures such as JFK and Winston Churchill, has been transformed. 60 Curzon is now a boutique collection of 32 private residences and its show apartment, designed by interior design studio Elicyon, exhibits a blend of Art Deco influence with a contemporary twist. Within the first and only private residential building in Europe designed by legendary French architect Thierry Despont - renowned for his Art Deco interiors and distinguished projects including Claridge’s and Ritz Paris - the Elicyon designed apartment pays reverence to the building’s stylised glamour and linear geometrical façade.

Through thoughtful curation of vintage and contemporary details, Elicyon has crafted an inviting four-bedroom apartment with a natural flow that radiates warmth. The spacious home is defined by soft curves and rounded silhouettes, with subtle motifs identifiable in the textured wallpaper, bespoke cabinetry, and rounded furniture seen throughout. Elicyon’s meticulous layering of unique antique pieces, including original Art Deco walnut side tables and a checkered oak cabinet in the guest bedroom, alongside a bold pair of reupholstered powder blue ground-hugging armchairs in the principal bedroom, creates a gallery-like atmosphere. Building on this aesthetic, statement vintage pieces such as a 1936 maple wood grand piano and a 300kg 19th century marble urn, not only pay homage to the site’s heritage but also serve as striking focal points, anchoring the apartment’s design in history and craftsmanship. An Art Deco scalloped dressing table chair from Marylebone Antiques, a bespoke shelving unit crafted by Rochford Joinery, and olivegreen glazed tile bedside cabinets by British ceramicist Matthew Raw, further reinforce the apartment’s Art Deco feel.

Echoing 60 Curzon’s history as a fine dining destination, and in anticipation of a new restaurant that will soon be welcomed on the development’s ground floor, Elicyon has expertly shaped an environment that blends the art of entertaining with the appeal of personal retreat. Welcoming communal areas are enriched

with intimate details, striking the perfect balance between social vibrancy and reserved comfort. In the dining room, a bespoke Tamu Ash Veneer, antique mirrored drinks cabinet, an antique bar trolley, and the Chappell Baby Grand Piano all honour 60 Curzon’s culinary legacy, establishing the ideal setting for hosting. Recognising 60 Curzon as Mayfair’s newest residential landmark, Elicyon mirrors the elegance and cosmopolitan flair of this iconic London neighbourhood through the apartment’s curated mix of global furnishing and art. Mirroring Mayfair’s blend of history with modern luxury, Elicyon has blended vintage pieces with contemporary furniture, reflecting the style of a well-travelled resident who values both historical and modern design. Designed to serve as a natural extension of the apartment’s elegant interior, an expansive terrace has been styled with playful outdoor furniture, oversized antique planters, and verdant greenery, bringing a sense of whimsy to this rare outdoor sanctuary in the heart of prime central London.

Charu Gandhi, Founder and Director of Elicyon said: “Collaborating on the inaugural show apartment for 60 Curzon has been a unique opportunity to capture Mayfair's storied elegance within a contemporary setting. We drew inspiration from the building’s architectural heritage and crafted a space that seamlessly balances Art Deco influences with modern comforts. Every detail, from the restored vintage pieces to the custom furnishings, was selected to create an atmosphere that feels timeless yet fresh – a perfect reflection of the vibrant and historic character of this iconic address.” Beyond the sophisticated interiors, the future resident of the apartment will also enjoy exclusive access to 60 Curzon’s state-of-the-art amenities, including a pool, gym and treatment rooms. The building’s club lounge and temperature-controlled storage will also be available for the storage of personal items like fine wines, whiskies, and cigars

The apartment is on the market for £24,750,000

A

kitchen of stories: Penelope Chilvers’ collaboration with Neptune

In the heart of the Cotswolds, inside a modest farmhouse surrounded by fields and gardens, British designer Penelope Chilvers has reimagined her family kitchen into something far greater than a functional space. It is, as she describes, “a room for storytelling, connection, and memorymaking” — a place where tradition meets the future, where artistry meets utility, and where a collaboration with heritage design brand Neptune finds its fullest expression.

This partnership between Chilvers and Neptune, unveiled this summer, is more than just a brandambassador announcement. It’s a meeting of values: artistry, timeless design, craftsmanship, and a profound respect for heritage.

“I am delighted to be invited to be an ambassador for Neptune,” Penelope says. “As a creative whose work celebrates tradition and craft, there’s a lot about my own artistic and creative practice that aligns with Neptune’s approach to design and production.”

The project began with a question many families eventually face: how can a home evolve as the needs of its occupants grow? For Penelope, whose farmhouse kitchen once served as a cosy parlour for two, the answer was clear.

“Suddenly the house had new purpose,” she explains. “I imagined a kitchen with children running around

the table constantly. But for this to happen, we had to take down a wall and merge the dining room and kitchen into one space.”

It wasn’t about chasing trends or enlarging the space for grandeur’s sake. Instead, Penelope sought to create something layered, intimate, and enduring — a room that would serve her family for the next 30 years. Her vision crystallised after visiting Neptune’s showroom in Cheltenham.

“When I saw how timeless, long-lasting, and sympathetic their designs were for a small Cotswold farmhouse like ours, I started dreaming of designing a kitchen to suit the next 30 years of our life,” she says.

The final design brings together Neptune’s Suffolk cabinetry, painted in Polenta — a warm, seasonal shade that glows softly in natural light — with the deep, tactile grain of Henley oak. The effect is one of harmony: a palette rooted in tradition but alive with quiet vibrancy.

This thoughtful combination balances elegance and utility, heritage and future. It’s a kitchen designed not only to withstand the patina of daily life but to embrace it, celebrating the marks of use as part of its ongoing story.

Among the standout features is a glazed cabinet that Penelope transformed into a piece of functional art. Inside, she hand-painted delicate botanical motifs and

"Just as her shoes are designed to age beautifully with wear, this kitchen is built to grow more beautiful with time"

subtle butterflies, inspired by the gardens surrounding the farmhouse.

“I wanted to create something that felt intimate and reflective — a moment of nature captured indoors,” she explains. “The butterflies are a symbol of beauty and fragility, and a quiet reminder of the responsibility we all share to protect the natural world. Painting the inside of the cabinet pays homage to nature itself and brings my garden indoors in the winter months.”

The piece reflects not only Penelope’s artistic vision but also her sense of legacy. She imagines her young grandchildren returning year after year to the family home, the “butterfly cabinet” becoming a touchstone of childhood memory.

“I imagine with hopefulness,” she reflects, “as my baby grandchildren grow, they will look forward to returning to the house with the butterfly cabinet throughout their childhoods.”

The kitchen’s narrative is strengthened by carefully chosen finishing touches.

Made-to-measure merino wool curtains by British textile designer Tori Murphy frame the windows and soften the view onto the garden. Each element of the room is considered, layered, and personal — no detail left without meaning.

This approach mirrors Penelope’s broader creative philosophy. Known for her footwear and accessories that celebrate craftsmanship and tradition, she brings the same eye for artistry to her home. Just as her shoes are designed to age beautifully with wear, this kitchen is built to grow more beautiful with time. For Neptune, the collaboration feels like a natural extension of its own philosophy. Fred Horlock, the brand’s design director, describes it as a meeting of minds.

“Collaborating with Penelope Chilvers felt like a natural extension of Neptune’s philosophy,” he explains. “Her dedication to traditional craft, sustainability, and storytelling through design perfectly echoes our commitment to creating

spaces that endure and inspire. This kitchen is more than a functional space — it’s a living, breathing home that honours heritage while embracing family life and the future. Together, we’ve crafted something truly special that reflects our shared belief in beauty, longevity, and respect for the environment.”

For Penelope, the project has become a personal reflection of her own creative ethos — one where artistry is always entwined with meaning.

“I wanted to create something that felt intimate and reflective,” she says again, gesturing towards the butterfly cabinet. “Something that captured nature indoors, something my family could carry with them into the future.”

In the quiet Cotswold farmhouse, amid oak grains and golden tones, Penelope Chilvers and Neptune have crafted more than a kitchen. They’ve created a space of memory, artistry, and belonging — a room that will continue to tell its story for decades to come.

SOCIABLE

LIVING

How Kitchen Architecture’s individual approach – combined with a minimal aesthetic – created an elegant and functional kitchen for a family that loves cooking, socialising and entertaining

An impressive island creates a sleek stage for living in this beautiful, minimal family kitchen. The client’s love for cooking and entertaining as a family was a key consideration in the design process and this kitchen, crafted to be elegant and highly practical, has ample storage to meet their needs.

Kitchen Architecture worked closely with Lewandowski Architects to bring the concept for the new living space to life and ensure a seamless flow between the kitchen and the connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. The impressive island in anthracite and stainless steel adds to the minimal aesthetic kitchen, creating a stage for life. The bar formed from the stainless-steel work surface provides an informal social and dining spot. From the island, the cook can socialise with ease while enjoying stunning views through the floor-to-ceiling glazing.

THE VISION: SLEEK, MINIMAL, AND PRACTICAL

The clients, a couple with two adult children, envisioned a kitchen seamlessly blending into their living space. They wanted a design more akin to bespoke furniture than a traditional kitchen, allowing it to integrate effortlessly into their home. The result is a sleek and minimal space, achieved through Kitchen Architecture’s high-end materials and calm colour tones, ensuring both style and practicality.

KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS

Ths beautiful Kitchen Architecture kitchen features bulthaup furniture in anthracite, selected for its soft

and smooth appearance. This finish interacts beautifully with the natural light that floods the space, thanks to the almost fully glazed rear elevation. Stainless steel worktops add a timeless touch, creating a seamless and expansive work surface that is practical and visually striking.

LAYOUT AND FUNCTIONALITY

A meticulously planned layout improves the space’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. A long kitchen island serves as the central hub. The tall appliance block, featuring Gaggenau ovens and a Bora hob with downdraft extraction, is recessed to maintain a sleek profile.

ARCHITECTURAL HARMONY

Working closely with Lewandowski Architects, the kitchen design complements the home’s modern architectural style with the almost entirely glazed rear elevation maximising the connection to the grounds and enhancing the sense of openness and connectivity.

CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Using high-quality materials and intelligent storage solutions ensures the kitchen is beautiful and highly functional. Hidden storage within the extended-height tall units and the unobtrusive downdraft hob adds to the minimalist aesthetic.

Bespoke spatial design for the whole home at Battersea’s Onestà

Founded in 2007, Battersea-based Onestà is a high end, multi discipline studio delivering bespoke spatial design for the whole home.

The team at Onestà worked in collaboration with architect Mia Molato to design a modernindustrial kitchen and two complementary bathrooms for this compact, open plan converted Mews in Fulham.

In the kitchen, the rich Quercia Grigia units pared with the marbled Moorland Fog quartz worktops and splashback create perfect backdrop. Warming and softening the sparse, minimalist home, the deep, textural tones draw the eye and boldly zone the large space. Impactful black hardware, brassware and lighting inject a punch of personality while cohesively unifying the kitchen and complementing the industrial staircase. Lighting is positioned distinctively at various heights to further define the space and amplify specific regions when in use.

THE SAME LANGUAGE IS CONTINUED TO THE BATHROOMS

The warm, sleek minimalist family bathroom was designed with modern-industrial aesthetic in mind. Using the same tiles throughout the wetroom style shower as well as the rest of the bathroom, creates a streamline aesthetic. Onestà designed a wall mounted Atlasplan sloped basin in Smoke Boost Stone Matte to complement the tiles and contrast the tradi-

tional stained oak cabinetry. This style of sloped sink, that allows water to run freely away, is becoming increasingly popular as clients move away from filling up the bathroom sink. Introducing a large frameless mirror continues the minimal look and widens the space.

The generous en-suite bathroom features a bespoke BV Italia vanity unit finished in Rovere Liscio Cuoio. Topped with a generous made-tomeasure Lusso double stone sink, this timeless, easy to maintain, unit-sink combination takes centre stage in this functional, sophisticated and spacious en-suite bathroom.

“For this project, cohesion and continuation of design aesthetic through the home was important. With the rest of the home feeling minimalist, our kitchen and bathrooms were designed to have impact and bring a sense of warmth and cosiness to areas of function while maintaining clean lines and a defined look,” explains Daniele Brutto, co-founder of Onestà.

Every space Onestà creates is unique and exceptional, with an emphasis on cohesive furniture design for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. With the client at the heart of every project, Onestà represents the very pinnacle of product and interior design. Daniele Brutto and the in-house design team combine exquisite Italian materials with inventive design solutions to bring clients’ visions to life through meticulously crafted fitted furniture. onesta.design • 02079242285 info@onesta.design • @onesta.design

Steel frames are best for both style and thermal efficiency, say the team at Crittall Windows

In the streets of Kensington and Chelsea, where architectural heritage meets contemporary living, discerning homeowners are rediscovering the appeal of steel windows and doors. Far from systems manufactured more than a century ago, steel fenestration today is the perfect example of sophisticated design, combining sleek aesthetics with breakthrough performance.

At the forefront of steel window and door design is Crittall Windows, whose legacy spans 175 years. From its Essex manufacturing facility, each frame is crafted from high-grade recycled steel, hot-dip galvanized and finished with Duralife powder coating – a process that ensures decades of outstanding beauty requiring minimal maintenance.

The transformation of steel windows and doors has been nothing short of remarkable. Homeowners once faced choosing between style and thermal efficiency but, thanks to Crittall Windows, modern systems can ef-

fortlessly deliver both. Advanced weather stripping and quality glazing achieve exceptional energy performance, while thermally enhanced profiles maintain the infamous slim sightlines that flood properties with natural light. The result? A home that remains comfortable all year-round.

Security has also evolved over the years. Today’s systems feature multiple locking mechanisms and reinforced glazing options, offering peace of mind to homeowners without compromising the clean lines that make steel so visually striking. For London properties where aesthetics and protection matter, this combination is invaluable.

The versatility of steel windows and doors has also improved dramatically. Beyond the iconic black steel synonymous with Crittall, bespoke colours spanning the RAL spectrum are now available. Plus, partnerships with hardware makers, like Frank Allart and Formani, ensure every detail represents impeccable craftmanship. Whether select-

ing external doors for weather protection and security or internal steel room dividers for tonnes of natural light, each element is made to measure and finished to the highest standard.

With galvanized steel frames designed to last over sixty years, minimal maintenance requirements and complete UK manufacturing control, products made by Crittall Windows offer exceptional long-term value to a borough where properties represent the true definition of quality and character.

As London homeowners plan their next renovation projects, steel windows and doors offer something rare: the perfect combination of timeless design and cutting-edge performance, manufactured by steel specialists who understand that true luxury lies in the details.

Inspiring London showrooms for the modern home

IIf kitchens are the heart of the home, Espresso Design has perfected the art of making that heart beat with style, ingenuity and effortless functionality.

Specialising in sleek, bespoke kitchens and interiors, this award-winning design studio has made its mark on the capital’s most elegant properties. Their beautifully curated showrooms — one at the prestigious Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and the other, freshly refurbished, on St John’s Hill in Wandsworth —are stunning, design-led destinations where creativity, craftsmanship and lifestyle meet.

Espresso Design’s Chelsea outpost is a masterclass in cosmopolitan chic. Here, the focus is on high-end inspiration, with a series of sophisticated displays showcasing cuttingedge kitchen concepts, luxurious materials and the latest technology from appliance brands such as Gaggenau, Miele and Siemens.

Just across the river, their newly renovated Wandsworth showroom offers an equally captivating experience. This fresh, light-filled space feels like stepping into a series of different rooms. Sleek, archi-

tectural cabinetry stands alongside richly textured timbers and sculptural stone and marble surfaces, each element carefully chosen to reflect the artistry and quality for which Espresso Design is renowned.

Among the highlights is a striking walk-in pantry concept, capturing the growing appetite for “room within a room” layouts. Far more than an organisational tool, it evokes a sense of traditional architectural elegance and turns a practical consideration into a discreet yet dramatic feature.

While the displays offer inspiration on a grand scale, the newly introduced samples area brings the design process to a tactile, personal level. Visitors are invited to mix, match and explore an array of finishes — cool marbles, warm oaks, polished metals — creating palettes that speak to their own tastes. This hands-on experience complements Espresso Design’s meticulous digital renderings and mood boards, ensuring that every project is as individual as the home it belongs to.

The showroom extends its vision beyond kitchens, offering intelligent solutions for

dressing rooms, home offices and utility spaces. Each display has been composed with an eye for proportion and harmony, illustrating how thoughtful design can make the most of every inch of a London property.

At both locations, what sets Espresso Design apart is its warm, collaborative ethos. Clients are encouraged to open drawers, explore hidden pantries or perch at the chef’s table to watch a live cooking demonstration. The experienced design team take time to understand each client’s lifestyle, ensuring every project is as individual as the people who live in it. Sustainability is woven through their approach too, with responsibly sourced woods, water-based finishes and energysaving appliances forming part of the brand’s considered offering.

Espresso Design’s showrooms are more than destinations for browsing; they’re hubs of inspiration and creativity. It’s this hands-on approach, combined with the warmth of the design team, that makes planning a project with Espresso Design feel like a creative collaboration rather than a transaction. espressodesign.co.uk

A temporary home for traditional Japanese craftsmanship in Shoreditch

For more than three centuries, Nakagawa has been a guardian of Japan’s craft traditions. Since its founding in 1716, the company has worked hand in hand with generations of artisans to ensure that kogei—the collective name for heritage crafts passed down through families and regions—remains alive, relevant and evolving. Now, after over 800 collaborations with craftspeople across the country and the establishment of more than 60 stores at home, Nakagawa is ready to take a bold step abroad with its first European outpost in the Shoreditch design district, a pop-up store that will run until July 2026.

The move marks Nakagawa’s most significant international expansion to date, following a series of pop-ups in Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul. For London, it means a rare opportunity to encounter Japanese craft traditions in a contemporary context. The store will present around 500 objects spanning textiles, ceramics, kitchenware, clothing and home accessories, each made by skilled artisans and intended to age gracefully with daily use. In an era of massproduced goods, the project feels both timely and deliberate: an invitation to slow down, to reconnect with the idea of objects that last, and to consider the link between sustainability and tradition.

Nakagawa’s origins lie in Nara, once Japan’s imperial capital and long a centre of craftsmanship. Founder Nakaya Kihei built his business around Nara-Sarashi, a ramie fabric prized by samurai for its strength and elegance. Over the centuries, as Japan modernised, the company adapted without ever losing sight of its roots. Today it works with artisans from across the country, from the ceramic kilns of Shigaraki to the metalworkers of Takaoka, transforming practices honed over centuries into products designed for contemporary life. This philosophy, summed up by the phrase “preservation through transformation,” is central to the brand’s identity. Rather than freezing tradition in time, Nakagawa believes in letting it evolve, ensuring that heritage techniques remain relevant in modern homes.

The Shoreditch shop will put this ethos into practice with a selection that is both practical and poetic. Among the highlights are Hana-Fukin dishcloths, one of Nakagawa’s most celebrated products. Originally made from mosquito net fabric, they have been reimagined for kitchens as lightweight, quick-drying, and highly absorbent cloths. The product’s transformation from utilitarian netting into everyday essential exemplifies Nakagawa’s approach: reinterpreting the old for the needs of today. For London, the brand has produced two exclusive Hana-Fukin designs inspired by Columbia Road Flower Market. The designs celebrate both Nara’s kaya-ori weaving tradition and the local spirit of Shoreditch, fusing two cultures in a single cloth.

Alongside these textiles, visitors will find pieces such as the Oigen Casting Nambu iron kettle, which embodies the precision of Japanese metalwork and the durability of cast iron. Each object on the shelves tells a similar story: of techniques passed through generations, of regional identities, of artisans who view their work not just as production but as stewardship of cultural memory.

The store is not only about retail. Nakagawa is determined to offer Londoners a more immersive encounter with Japanese craft through a programme of workshops. These will range from kintsugi—the golden repair method that turns broken ceramics into objects of renewed beauty—to tea ceremonies and even traditional ice shaving, the delicate art of preparing kakigōri. Such events aim to convey the philosophies underpinning kogei: respect for materials, an embrace of imperfection, and the idea that craft connects people across time and culture. As Tomoya Yasuda of Nakagawa explains, “True craftsmanship connects people across generations and cultures. Bringing our first pop-up to Shoreditch is a milestone moment, and we are excited to share the spirit of Japanese kogei with the London community. Through our products and workshops, we

hope visitors will experience how tradition and modern life can come together to inspire more sustainable and meaningful ways of living.”

The design of the store itself embodies the dialogue between Japan and Britain. London-based studio Jones Neville has drawn inspiration from the Victorian circular bandstand in Boundary Garden, just a short walk from the site. The structure, long a symbol of gathering and community, provides a conceptual anchor for the space. Locally sourced London native sycamore has been used throughout the interior, creating a quiet interplay between British material heritage and Japanese craft sensibility. Graphic design is by A Practice for Everyday Life, ensuring that every aspect of the shop reflects careful thought about how tradition and modernity might meet.

By situating itself in Shoreditch, Nakagawa is entering a neighbourhood already attuned to design and

“An immersive encounter with Japanese craft”

craft. Yet its approach feels distinct: this is not about nostalgia or exoticism, but about offering an alternative to disposable culture. The London pop-up suggests that the values embedded in Japanese craft—care, longevity, respect for material and maker—resonate far beyond their place of origin. For Nakagawa, the store is a chance to test that proposition with a new audience. For Londoners, it is an invitation to handle, learn from, and perhaps take home pieces of a tradition that has been sustained for over 300 years.

Cult Furniture’s new campaign features a collection of sofas with personas designed to reflect the way we really live

Cult Furniture’s latest campaign proves your sofa is more than just a seat, it’s where life happens. The place you collapse after a long day, curl up with a new Netflix obsession, spill secrets with your best friend, or console over a breakup. It’s the heart of the living room, the stage for everyday rituals. Cult celebrates this idea in its new campaign, Every Sofa Has a Story, a playful, stylish, and comfort-first approach to choosing the right sofa for your lifestyle. Whether you’re after something indulgent and romantic, or practical and cosy, this is a campaign that reminds us our furniture should feel personal.

THE BINGE BUDDY: HALTON

Perfect for streaming marathons, lazy

Sundays, or “just one more episode” that turns into five, the Halton has earned its title as the Binge Buddy. Upholstered in a warm cappuccino-brown boucle, it’s crafted for comfort with deep-set, pocket-sprung seating and a feather and fibre filling that feels like a hug. Its sweeping, soft lines and supportive arms are designed for those who want a balance of luxury and practicality, something that looks refined but still begs to be lounged on. With its classic-meetsmodern silhouette, the Halton is as much about design credentials as it is about indulgent downtime. Think of it as the costar to your latest box set obsession.

THE BOOTY CALL: CONNICK

The Connick in mohair-style velvet is unapologetically sultry. Plush, tactile, and dripping with 70s-inspired glamour, this sofa has earned the cheeky nickname

CONNICK
HALTON

Booty Call. It’s the piece that transforms an ordinary night into something extraordinary, whether that’s a spontaneous get-together, cocktails at home, or simply sinking into its oversized bubble-style cushions after hours.

The Connick is low-backed with a sleek, narrow frame, making it perfect for openplan living. Its warm truffle-brown velvet is made from 100% recycled PET yarns, proving sustainability and sensuality can go hand in hand. With its deep colour and irresistibly soft texture, this sofa is less about background furniture and more about making an entrance.

HEARTBREAK HQ: IVY

The Ivy 3-Seater manages both comfort and style with effortless confidence. Nicknamed Heartbreak HQ, it’s the place to pour a glass of wine, debrief with friends, or regroup after a long day. With its cocooning curves,

It’s not just a sofa, it’s an emotional support system disguised as impeccable design.

PILLOW TALK: THE CLOUD SOFA

There’s no denying the Cloud is romance material. Plush, sculptural, and effortlessly chic, it’s where whispers happen, where long conversations stretch into the early hours, and where comfort is an unspoken promise. Hence its persona: Pillow Talk. Spoilt for choice with either SpeckledCappuccino boucle, Speckled Espresso boucle, Speckled Red Berry boucle or Caramel Brown options, the Cloud is soft

By giving each design its own narrative, Cult transforms furniture shopping from a practical choice into an expressive one. Do you want a sofa that supports your Sunday binge sessions, one that makes a statement at parties, or one that’s there for you through the highs and lows? Whatever your answer, the campaign makes it easy to see how your furniture can embody your story.

THE ART OF

Paperd’s world of seductive wall coverings

Paperd is the creation of architect and graphic designer

Mauricio Tognetti, born as a tribute to his childhood holidays at his grandfather’s house. There, he would sit for hours on the porch, mesmerised by the ceramic tiles whose repetitions seemed to trick the eye into movement. That early fascination with pattern became an enduring obsession, recently rekindled by travels to Lisbon and Brussels, where he rediscovered how beautifully pattern can be woven into the fabric of modern living.

This personal story echoes a much older tradition. For centuries, pattern has signified order in Roman mosaics and Greek colonnades, flowed organically through Art Nouveau, or served as a tool of disruption in 1960s Pop Art. At Paperd, every motif carries meaning – whether as a doorway to other cultures or as a way of bringing unity to contemporary interiors.

In this spirit, Paperd creates visual symphonies for the wall – patterns that play with light and shadow, repetition and variation, to shape atmospheres of irresistible allure. To live among these designs is to inhabit a world where every room whispers its own quiet theatre.

The collections are studies in sophistication: from modernist clarity of bold forms and refined tones, to lyrical collaborations that translate paintings into compositions of striking intimacy, to a celebration of cultural vibrancy that fuses art, architecture and tradition in vivid hues evoking the soul of Mexico.

Looking ahead, Paperd will continue to weave inspiration from the world’s traditions of pattern, reimagining them for modern life. Its language of rhythm and repetition will extend beyond walls, flowing into textiles, ceramics and furniture, infusing design into the fabric of everyday spaces. Collaboration will remain at the heart of this journey, inviting artists, architects and designers to create works where cultures meet, and pattern finds

ever-new forms of expression.

For those with a specific vision, Paperd offers true collaboration – colours can be adjusted, motifs refined, or entirely new patterns created to suit a project, with commercial-grade finishes available to combine durability with elegance in hospitality and public spaces. Every piece is then brought to life in the UK, printed on luxury non-woven coverings with the look and feel of fine textiles. Made with sustainably sourced materials and PVC-free inks, they embody elegance with conscience. paperd.co.uk

Open-plan living, along with so many people now working from home, has made it hard for individuals to find a quiet spot to relax and unwind. As a result, the bathroom is increasingly seen as a private sanctuary. Reading a book or listening to a podcast in the bath has become, for many, an important time-out from the pace of everyday life. Here are a few tips for making your bathroom into the relaxing retreat you need it to be.

DECLUTTER

To create a relaxing setting in which to unwind, you need to declutter. Clear countertops and rehouse toiletries and cleaning materials in a smart vanity unit that fits under the basin or a built-in mirror fronted cabinet. Woven baskets also offer useful, flexible storage.

COLOUR & TEXTURE

Choose calming, nature-inspired colours such as warm beige, sage green or soft blue

SANCTUARY

Jamie Bebbington of Aston Matthews discusses how to create spa-like spaces at home

to instantly cultivate serenity. Then bring the outdoors in with wood or bamboo accessories such as trays, soap holders or stools. Stone or marble accents also evoke spa elegance. Add humidity-loving plants, such as peace lilies and ferns, to purify air and soothe the senses.

AMBIENT LIGHTING

Lighting dramatically impacts mood. Add a dimmer switch to effortlessly shift between bright task light and a soft, spa-like glow. You might consider adding accent lighting, such as LED strips under shelves to intensify the ambience.Candles will also add a cosy flicker to a long, indulgent soak in the tub.

UPDATE YOUR FITTINGS

The only option for bathrooms used to be chrome, but instead consider brass, brushed brass or bronze taps and shower fittings for a less clinical look. Consider indulgent upgrades like drenching showerheads or walk-in showers for openness and sophistication. Heated towel rails and underfloor heating will further enhance comfort and

warmth. And, if space allows, a freestanding bath, especially near a window, is the ultimate spa luxury.

SCENTS & SOUNDS

Incorporate aromatherapy with essential oil diffusers or scented candles in a calming fragrance. And further curate this sensory atmosphere with soft music or nature sounds. Pamper your senses with plush towels, robes and thoughtfully displayed products like scrubs and bath salts.

ADD A SEAT

Even a small vintage chair will elevate comfort and give your bathroom a spa-worthy feel. You will definitely need a small stool next to your freestanding bath to accommodate your scented candle and glass of wine. With these elements, your bathroom can be transformed into a peaceful, spalike haven you’ll want to linger in every day.

MARVELLOUS

MARBLE

How stoneCIRCLE transformed a fabulous architect-designed residence with marble and onyx

This fabulous architectdesigned residence makes stunning use of marble and onyx in all six bathrooms in the property, as well as the kitchen and bar area. The French client chose different types of distinctive onyx and marble for each room, imparting a glamourous feel to the whole property.

The master bathroom is resplendent in Jade Green. The centrepiece is a massive double vanity unit, clad entirely in the marble with the twin basins carved out of the stone and the veining flowing down the wall and across the front of the drawers. The walk-in shower has the same marble on the floor and walls with striking bookmatched veins, fi nished with a built-in marble seat. The same marble is used in the dressing room next door.

Each of the guest bathrooms features a different coloured natural stone and complementary accessories in styles varying from the very feminine with pink onyx, matched with pink wallpaper and vanity unit, to the strikingly masculine with black and gold marble for the floor, walls, and vanity top, and gold coloured taps and basin. Elsewhere, blue marble was teamed with pale blue paint and a wooden floor to create a calm haven in one bathroom, and geometric floor tiles and different shades of blue on the walls for a modern, vibrant feel in another.

In the living area, a beautiful translucent pink onyx bar top and back wall glow with concealed back lighting. And the design is carried through to the floor where discs of the pink onyx have been inset into the wooden parquet flooring.

The kitchen is home to a large island entirely clad in gorgeous brown and green onyx which tones with the brown leather bar stools and the wooden parquet floor, perfect for chatting to family and friends while cooking.

All of the stone was manufactured and installed by stoneCIRCLE. The company has been fabricating stone for interiors since 1968, and works with top architects and interior designers on some of the most desirable residences. They have their own teams of installers working across the south of England fitting the stone they fabricate. Please contact them to discuss how you could use stone to transform your home.

DESIGN

“DESIGN IS ONE OF DENMARK’S MOST VISIBLE CULTURAL EXPORTS”

DESTINATION

A long weekend in Copenhagen

Our long weekend in Copenhagen o ers a compact introduction to the city’s mix of history, design, and everyday culture. Staying at Villa Copenhagen, exploring by bike, and sampling food from bakeries and street markets creates a balanced picture of how the city lives today. It's a fun, vibrant and stylish place.

VILLA COPENHAGEN

Our base for the weekend is Villa Copenhagen, a hotel set in the city’s former central post o ce. Behind its neoclassical façade, the interiors are stripped back and contemporary: muted tones, natural materials and stylish design. The rooftop pool, heated year-round, is one of its most distinctive features, o ering views over the rooftops. The hotel’s sustainability initiatives: energy-e cient systems, recycled materials and locally sourced menus mirror broader urban priorities in Copenhagen.

GETTING AROUND BY BIKE

The city is one of the world’s most bicycle-friendly, and using Donkey Republic bikes demonstrates why. We download an app and book our bikes for 48 hours. If we have trouble identifying our orange bikes in a sea of similar ones, we don't need to search for numeric codes – these bikes have names. Mine is Lydia. Dedicated lanes, separate tra c lights, and thoughtful infrastructure make cycling straightforward, even for visitors. On two wheels we're speeding around town, along the boulevards of Vesterbro, the canals and bridges of Christianshavn and the quieter residential streets of Østerbro.

THE CITY FROM THE WATER

Another essential perspective comes from a canalboat tour. Boats leave from Nyhavn, where 17th-century houses line the waterfront. From the deck, the city appears calmer and more measured. The route includes the Opera House, the Black Diamond library, and the Little Mermaid statue, but the quieter moments along the way stand out: bridges at eye level, houseboats clustered along the edges, and the sight of residents using the waterfront as an everyday gathering place.

VILLA COPENHAGEN, LOBBY
MARBLE BRIDGE, COPENHAGEN

CHRISTIANIA

Within Christianshavn lies Freetown Christiania, established in the 1970s and still maintaining its semi-autonomous identity. The area is marked by murals, handmade houses, gardens, and workshops. Streets are lined with improvised structures and art, creating an atmosphere distinct from the polished architecture of the city center. It's a fascinating insight into a utopian community.

DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK

Design is one of Denmark’s most visible cultural exports, and the Designmuseum Danmark presents its history in depth. The collection includes classic furniture by designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, lighting by Poul Henningsen, as well as ceramics, textiles, and contemporary work. The displays emphasise not only the aesthetics of Danish design but its guiding principles: functionality, sustainability, and attention to everyday use.

HART BAGERI

No stay in Copenhagen is complete without sampling its bakeries. Hart Bageri, founded by former Noma baker Richard Hart, is among the most celebrated.

“A FORMER INDUSTRIAL SITE IS NOW REPURPOSED AS A CREATIVE HUB”

Its specialties include sourdough loaves, pastries flavored with cardamom or seasonal fruits, and laminated doughs that draw locals and visitors alike.

REFFEN STREET FOOD MARKET

For a contrasting food experience, Re en, located on Refshaleøen, brings together dozens of street food stalls from around the world. The market occupies a former industrial site, now repurposed as a creative hub. Visitors find options ranging from bao buns and Nepali dumplings to tacos and reimagined Danish classics. Long communal tables, live music, and harbor views create a casual, open-air atmosphere. Sustainability is a central focus, with many stalls committed to zero-waste practices and environmentally friendly packaging. A long weekend is enough to establish a rhythm: mornings that start with cycling, afternoons shaped by water or design, evenings ending with food by the harbor. What emerges is not a single image but a layered impression of a city that operates smoothly while leaving space for creativity and variety. Copenhagen, we love you.

UMBRIAN ALLURE

UMBRIAN VIEW FROM PALAZZO SENECA

A journey to Rome and the hills of Umbria staying in Relais & Chateaux properties o ers inimitable Italian scenery, cuisine and style

Any Italian adventure is guaranteed to tick all boxes for food, wine and views. But Umbria, often overlooked in favour of its glossier neighbour Tuscany, delivers all this and more. This is Italy’s only landlocked region – no rugged coastlines or sunsoaked beaches here – but what it lacks in sea breezes it makes up for in scenery, cuisine and history.

Think rolling hills draped in olive groves, forests that deliver tru es like buried

treasure, medieval hilltop towns with cobbled streets and crumbling stone walls, and earthy, generous and flavourful food. It’s the perfect place to hit pause – to breathe, slow your pace, and soak up the gentler rhythm of life in this enchanting part of Italy.

Our journey begins in Rome. There’s always something dream-like about arriving in the Eternal City, where every corner holds history. We’re staying at the stunning Relais & Chateaux Palazzo Ripetta, an independent five-star hotel right in its heart, and just a short stroll from some of the most iconic sights.

When we’ve had our fill of cobbled streets and ancient wonders, we retreat to our hotel’s blissful courtyard where fountains trickle and flowers bloom and our elegant deluxe room awaits. We enjoy a mixology masterclass in the stylish bar and a fabulous three-course dinner in the courtyard. It’s

"The air smells sweet and the peace envelops us as we turn into a winding driveway through a forest filled with birdsong"

the perfect Roman base. We also visit the Relais & Chateaux Hotel Raphael for lunch on the rooftop at Mater Terrae, the only vegan Relais & Chateaux restaurant in all Italy, and a flavourful experience in an oasis of calm above the city's hum.

We leave Rome's bustle behind to head north into Umbrian hill country, slipping into the softer, slower tempo of Italy’s green heart. The air smells sweet and the peace envelops us as we turn into a winding driveway through a forest filled with birdsong. We’ve arrived somewhere extraordinary – the Relais & Chateaux Borgo dei Conti Resort.

We’re welcomed with chilled Prosecco and escorted to a gasp-inducing suite. It’s simply huge, with separate living area, shining marble bathroom and a giant bed guaranteeing the sweetest of dreams. The grounds are also vast with a beautiful pool area, plenty of shaded trails and even an apiary, where beekeeper Giorgio Poeta welcomes us dressed resplendently in yellow. How we love that honey. Worldly cares are banished as we relax totally and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature, some splendid fine dining in the restaurant, Cedri, and a rejuvenating facial in the coolness of the spa.

For our final stop we climb even higher into the mountains, where the air’s crisper and the vistas even greener. We’re headed to Relais & Chateux Palazzo Seneca within the ancient stone walls of Norcia. This beautiful medieval village of 5,000 inhabitants has seen its share of challenges, including a major earthquake that shook its

BORGO DEI CONTI

foundations in 2016. But Norcia is nothing if not resilient and its gentle charm remains intact as restoration continues.

Our hotel has just 24 rooms and sits on a narrow cobbled street. It’s rambling and cool with plenty of areas for quiet contemplation and uniquely designed bedrooms. The best Umbrian artisans have lovingly refurbished this property and it shows. It feels historic and elegant while having all the mod cons you'd expect at a hotel of quality.

Norcia is the home of the black tru e so, of course, we’re soon out in the forest with tru e dogs Octo and Luna in search of treasure. We find plenty and learn all about the countryside from our knowledgeable tru e hunter Nicola. We finish our forest adventure in his cabin in the woods, sipping on local red wine and sampling the local salami and cheese. Norcia is both the spiritual and culinary home of salami in Italy thanks to its cool mountain air and deep-rooted rustic traditions.

Being surrounded by such a rich culinary heritage, it’s no surprise that the food at Palazzo Seneca is superb. Their Vespasia restaurant has a Michelin Star and a Green

Star and chef Fabio Cappiello serves up a raft of glorious dishes. And we eat a lot of tru es – it’s kind of compulsory when you’re staying in their home turf. Umbria is a hard place to leave and it stays lodged in your soul. The beauty, the food and wine, the tranquility, the greenness and the warm welcome are all remarkable. A My biggest advice is to embrace it all! Yes, plan carefully but leave space for spontaneity – some of your best memories come from unexpected moments. Travel light and don’t miss the local food. If you see a busy place full of locals, that’s usually the best option. And finally, always book with a trusted provider. Reliable support and local connections can completely transform your trip from good to unforgettable.

Q What’s your favourite place you’ve ever visited?

A That’s a hard one, but I’d have to say the Maldives. The moment you see those turquoise waters from the seaplane, it takes your breath away. The beaches are pristine, the atmosphere is serene and underwater it’s like another world – colourful fish, coral gardens, even sea turtles gliding past. Every time I go, I’m reminded why travel is so powerful. It’s not just about the destination – it refreshes your whole spirit.

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery celebrates its Independent Prep School of the Year award at TES Schools Awards

This summer, Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery was delighted to be named as Independent Prep School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025.

The prestigious awards, often referred to as the Oscars of education, celebrate the most outstanding schools and teachers across the UK’s state and independent sectors, recognising excellence from early years through to secondary education.

The glittering awards ceremony took place on at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London, where Rosemead was honoured alongside other exceptional schools and educators.

The judging panel, made up of leading figures from across the education sector, praised Rosemead for its personalised approach, vibrant community and holistic educational o ering.

In 2023, Rosemead joined the St Dunstan’s Education Group, a move that has helped strengthen the school’s vision and strategic development.

Speaking about the Tes Award, Nick

Hewlett, CEO of the Group, said: ‘This is a phenomenal achievement for Rosemead and richly deserved. The school has been on an extraordinary journey, and I pay huge tribute to the entire leadership team who have transformed this school. It has been a joy to welcome Rosemead into the Group.

‘The Good Schools Guide was absolutely right to call Rosemead the “one to watch” in south London – and now the Tes Schools Awards have confirmed it.’

This latest recognition builds on a series of recent successes. In the last academic year, Rosemead won two prestigious awards – for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards, and Best EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards 2024. Following the Tes win, Rosemead has also been shortlisted for IndependentSchooloftheYearfor Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ)

“The Good Schools Guide called Rosemead the “one to watch” in south London”

at IndependentSchoolsoftheYearAwards which take place in October. Rosemead was also one of the first prep schools in the country to receive a significant strength in its most recent ISI inspection.

‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’

Prospective families will have the opportunity to meet the leadership team, current sta and students, and learn more about the award-winning education at Rosemead at their upcoming open morning. Rosemead hosts events in October, November and January. Book at rosemeadprep.org.uk

LEADING THE WORLD WITH

INTEGRITY

How St Dunstan’s College Senior School is redefining excellence in education

At St Dunstan’s College Senior School, Catford, we view the pursuit of excellence as a dynamic and evolving endeavour, requiring a thoughtful balance between remaining anchored in a principled educational philosophy and responding intelligently to the shifting landscape of the world. Our groupwide vision: Excellence. Di erently reflects our mission to cultivate a progressive community where innovation, integrity and individuality flourish in a culture of academic excellence.

From the very beginning of their journey, we ask our students to reflect not just on what they want to achieve, but on who they want to become. Which values will guide their decisions? Which principles will shape their lives? We believe that education must prepare young people not only for the world as it is, but for the world as it could be.

We are unapologetically ambitious. Our A Level results place us comfortably among the top 60 independent schools in the UK, and our students go on to a dazzling array of destinations, from Oxford and Cambridge to drama schools,

conservatoires and art foundations. Our students are taught not just what to learn, but how to learn and why it matters.

True excellence demands a willingness to think di erently, act boldly, and lead with purpose. It is why St Dunstan’s has been celebrated as one of the most progressive school groups in the UK. In recent years, the Senior School has proudly been named Tes Independent School of the Year, Co-educational School of the Year and awarded Most Progressive Independent School in Southeast England. These accolades that reflect our commitment to innovation, inclusion, and excellence across every area of school life.

Our curriculum is brave and bold. It does not shy away from the complex, the uncomfortable, or the contemporary. We discuss challenging topics such as misogyny, fake news and money management, equipping our students to think critically, act responsibly, and engage with the world around them with intelligence and empathy. Crucially, our education is designed not just for today, but for tomorrowpreparing students for jobs, industries, and challenges that may not yet exist.

St Dunstan’s was established with the bold vision of challenging the norms of education. From our founding days, when a courageous group of governors introduced science and technology into the curriculum, making us one of the first schools in the world to do so, and we have remained ambitious and progressive. We have just launched an AI Education and Ethics programme, equipping pupils to navigate the digital future with discernment and confidence. But innovation at St Dunstan’s extends far beyond technology. It is reflected in our approach to wellbeing, in our evidence-led pedagogy, and in our commitment to developing adaptable, analytical thinkers who are prepared to lead in a world that demands lifelong learning. With integrity as a cornerstone, we nurture young people to be thoughtful, ethical leaders and individuals who are prepared not only to thrive in the world, but to improve it.

Find out more about St Dunstan’s College Senior School at one of their upcoming Open Events throughout October and November. In August, St Dunstan’s celebrated its best-ever A Level results in the school’s history. 89% of all grades achieved were A*- B with an outstanding 64% being A - A*

Beyond the BIG FOUR

University options beyond the ‘Big Four’ prestige locations are coming into play, says Jessica Harris, Head of Quintessentially Education

The UK, US, Canada and Australia have dominated the global education market for decades. This ‘Big Four’ o ered both world-renowned institutions and the promise of long-term opportunity for aspirational students. But an unmistakable shift is taking place in international education, opening up competition for global talent like never before.

As a dual UK and US agency, we are supporting increasing numbers of students looking to a broader range of programmes across new regions. While demand for the UK and US remains high, there has been a significant increase in families casting the net wider.

WHY THE RISE OF ALTERNATIVES?

A host of reasons, including migratory pressures, rising tuition fees, demographic shifts, political and regulatory changes, and credibility of post-study pathways,

have led ambitious students to question previous assumptions and consider alternative places to study.

Policy and visa shifts can disrupt the best laid plans. Recent changes to student visa processing times and post-study work rules in some countries have created uncertainty. For example, in Australia, visa fees jumped to AUD $1,600 last year, with a further proposed rise for this year. Other policy changes have meant post-study work is now capped at two years. In the US, meanwhile, heightened scrutiny on visa applications, evolving documentation requirements and shifting timelines for F-1 processing have made it increasingly important for students to prepare early and remain adaptable.

Rising costs across the ‘Big Four’ means students and their families are recognising potentially better value elsewhere. Tuition fees in these four countries can exceed £50,000 per year before living expenses. In countries such as Germany, Austria or the Netherlands, tuition fees are minimal by comparison, even for international students. In Germany, for example, most

public universities charge no tuition fees or request very modest semester contributions of around €250–€350 for undergraduate study. There are exceptions such as BadenWürttemberg, where non-EU students pay about €1,500 per semester, but that’s still a fraction of UK or US tuition fees.

Growing global prestige is another factor influencing students’ desire to consider a broader set of university locations. While the UK and the US continue to dominate the top of the QS World University Rankings, an increasing number of European and Asian institutes such as ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore (placed seventh and eighth in QS World University Rankings 2025) are appearing. These institutions are attracting worldclass faculty and securing international research partnerships as their prestige becomes more recognised.

Cultural and professional opportunities are also seen as another factor. Studying outside the Big Four can immerse students in dynamic, fast-growing regions – whether it’s joining the tech ecosystem

of Singapore, learning in multilingual Brussels or building professional connections in Dubai’s thriving business scene. Such experiences can di erentiate graduates in a competitive job market. These locations may also bring flexibility

“Rising costs in the ‘Big Four’ nations means students and their families are recognising potentially better value universities elsewhere”

for transfers and postgraduate study. Certainly, a degree from a respected university in Europe or Asia can act as a springboard to postgraduate study in the UK or US, o ering an alternative route to the same long-term goals.

EUROPE – AFFORDABLE EXCELLENCE

From Germany’s tuition-free public universities to the Netherlands’ innovative English-taught programmes, Europe o ers an exceptional return on investment. Institutions such as TU Munich, Heidelberg University, and Wageningen University are beginning to really rival their UK/US counterparts in research output and graduate employability.

And for students who coveted Harvard’s government, public policy and economics courses, Sciences Po is an excellent alternative. This prestigious French university, which has long attracted many of Europe’s political elite (President Macron included) has campuses in Paris and a number of historic French towns and teaches many undergraduate courses in English.

For those pursuing a STEM pathway, a great alternative to MIT in Boston or Imperial College in London is the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Also known as TU Delft, this public university is much cheaper than MIT.

ETH ZURICH
TU DELFT

The annual fees for international students are the equivalent of approximately $18,600 USD per year, compared to MIT’s $57,790 USD, and the town has much lower living costs than Boston. Bocconi University in Milan is a fantastic alternative to both the University of Pennsylvania and LSE in London – o ering a similar range of economics, finance and management courses – while IE University in Madrid has similarly good courses in business, management and international relations.

And for students who want something collegiate and historic with English as the primary language, proximity to the UK, and generous post-study work visas, Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin o er a seamless cultural transition with strong academic credentials.

ASIA – RISING MARKETS

Regional hubs such as National University of Singapore and University of Hong Kong combine academic excellence with access to the fastest-growing markets in the world – ideal for future leaders in business, finance, and technology. Meanwhile, Dubai and Abu Dhabi now host an impressive roster of international branch campuses for leading UK, US, and Australian universities. This means globally recognised degrees in a strategically located and cosmopolitan environment.

For instance, University of Birmingham Dubai o ers the same UK-accredited degrees as its home campus, and with a strong focus on business, engineering, and computer science. Heriot-Watt University

“Learning in multilingual Brussels or building professional connections in Dubai – such experiences differentiate graduates in a competitive job market”

Dubai is renowned for its business and engineering programmes, while in Abu Dhabi, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) stands out for its liberal arts approach and strong research profile, combining US academic traditions with an immersive global outlook.

For families who value the prestige of a UK or US education but seek a warmer climate, dynamic job market, and lower living costs than London or New York, these UAE campuses may be an astute choice – particularly for those students interested in internships and industry connections in the Gulf’s thriving sectors, which include technology, construction, hospitality and renewables. Exploring beyond the Big Four is about widening possibilities. Students can get expert help in creating shortlists tailored to their academic goals, career aspirations and lifestyle preferences. At Quintessentially Education, our advice to students is to ensure they choose universities that are not just reputable but right for them. So, alongside the tangible values such as tuition costs, living expenses and graduate outcomes, think about the admissions process and the all-important lifestyle components. It can be especially helpful to talk to other students who have attended shortlisted institutions for firsthand feedback.

The good news for students is that a prestigious degree remains within reach, regardless of geopolitics. The key lies in having an informed and flexible strategy that balances ambition with pragmatism. The best higher education plans can evolve if the situation changes by keeping a range of potential options on the table.

MEET THE

HEAD

Absolutely

quizzes Phillip Makhouli,Head of Aberdour School

Q What was your first Headship role and what did you learn from it?

A My path to headship has been unconventional. I started out my career as an electrical engineer in the nuclear power industry before retraining as a teacher and working in schools as varied as rural Scotland and central London. I became Head of Skippers Hill Manor Prep in 2020 – right in the middle of the pandemic. Leading a school through lockdowns and social distancing taught me something powerful: a school is so much more than lessons and timetables. It is a living community of children, parents and sta – and when that community works together with a shared sense of purpose, children flourish.

Q How long have you been at Aberdour and what attracted you to working there?

A I was thrilled to join Aberdour

School as Head in April 2025. What drew me here was Aberdour’s distinctive philosophy: build the education around the child, not the other way round. The school’s ethos of “finding the brilliance in every child” completely resonated with me – it’s exactly why I went into teaching. When I discovered teaching, I stumbled upon a passion and ability I never knew I had. That’s what I want for Aberdour’s children: to find their own brilliance as early as possible, and to spend as much of their childhood as they can enthralled by the things that inspire them.

Q How would you describe your leadership style?

A Rather than defining myself by a particular leadership model, I like to keep it simple: kindness, hard work, aspiration – and fun. I want Aberdour to be a school where children and sta feel valued, empowered,

and encouraged to give their best. Where empathy and ambition go hand in hand. And where laughter is heard every single day. By nurturing a culture where everyone feels valued and inspired, we create a school that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Q What is your vision for the future of your school?

A My vision is for Aberdour to stay true to what makes it special: a stand-alone prep school that knows every child, nurtures every talent, and keeps innovating. Belonging is at the heart of that vision. When children feel seen and known, they are happier, more confident and perform better in every area of school life. I want Aberdour to be a place where children quite literally bounce through the gates every morning.

A Francis Holland education in the heart of the capital

Francis Holland Schools Trust’s aim is to be at the forefront of forward-thinking, values-led girls’ education in London. Its three schools are placed in exceptional central locations which enable them to treat London as their extended classroom, enhancing their ability to nurture pupils’ potential and help them become resilient, fulfilled adults who will make a positive di erence in the world.

At Francis Holland Regent’s Park, located just steps from one of London’s most beautiful parks since 1878, girls aged 11-18 benefit from daily lunchtime walks and abundant sporting opportunities. The curriculum is enriched by the city’s resources, with pupils attending workshops and lectures from industry leaders such as data scientists from JP Morgan and CEOs including Amanda Pritchard of NHS England, while visits to EY, the Bank of England and corporate headquarters ensure pupils are future ready. Partnerships with universities including LSE and UCL enhance an exemplary enrichment programme.

The Architects Ambassadors programme, run with RIBA and St Marylebone School, empowers pupils to design sustainable

projects. Having won a national STEM award in 2024, the school is especially committed to ensuring girls excel in this field. Through a pioneering Women in Tech series, pupils gain the skills and confidence to thrive in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Francis Holland Sloane Square for girls aged 11-18, founded in 1881, stands in Belgravia, just a two-minute walk from Sloane Square. Nearby, green spaces such as Battersea Park are enjoyed frequently and o er a wealth of sporting opportunities. Just around the corner are the Royal Court Theatre and the Saatchi Gallery. From the Globe Theatre to the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum to the Courtauld Institute, the Houses of Parliament to the Old Bailey, hundreds of nearby places of social or cultural interest provide opportunities to develop intellectual curiosity.

The school’s award-winning Futures programme is greatly enhanced by its central location, which facilitates frequent visits from alumnae and visiting professionals. In all year groups, pupils are encouraged to develop entrepreneurial skills through initiatives such as Young Enterprise, Tycoon In Schools and Girls Are Investors. In the Sixth Form, independent engagement with London life flourishes: lectures at Imperial and KCL are popular, while local sports studios such as KXU and Vita broaden PE beyond traditional sports.

Francis Holland Prep’s location in the original Chelsea Library, just o the King’s Road, enables weekly trips to renowned galleries and museums including the nearby Science Museum, V&A and Natural History Museum. The Prep holds traditional values of compassion, humility and kindness, but its metropolitan outlook instils a unique resilience, dexterity and maturity in girls aged 4-11. This ensures that pupils are ready to embrace their senior school journey, whether they go on to one of the two Francis Holland Senior Schools or other leading London independent schools or boarding schools. francisholland.org.uk

Supplementing your child's education at Cresconova Labs

In the heart of Chelsea and Kensington, Cresconova Labs is transforming what supplemental education can look like. It is not tutoring, nor standard enrichment — it is an environment where children discover the joy of creating, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life.

As Artificial Intelligence and other technologies reshape our world, the qualities that matter most — creativity, imagination, collaboration, and resilience — become even more powerful when paired with the right tools. At Cresconova Labs, advanced technologies are not ends in themselves but catalysts, helping children turn ideas into reality through hands-on, collaborative projects that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture future innovators. Picture a group of children huddled together designing capsules and determined

REIMAGINING LEARNING FOR THE AI AGE

to keep their “egg-stronaut” safe. They measure angles, calculate force, test materials, and debate design choices, all while racing against the clock to refine their capsules. At launch, the staircase becomes their proving ground. Some eggs land intact, others not, but each outcome sparks laughter, fresh hypotheses, and another round of iteration. What seems like play is actually deep learning in action— strengthened by resilience, teamwork, and inventive thinking.

In another room, students are just as intensely focused, turning fabric remnants into haute couture, more than just an accessory — designed with precision, crafted with a focus on texture and form, creating a one-of-a-kind piece focused on environmental responsibility. Students explore history through textiles, apply geometry in patternmaking, and express individuality through color and form. The session ends with a joyful runway moment, but beneath the fashion design lies critical thinking, imagination, and a consciousness of sustainability.

From rockets to runways, every activity at Cresconova Labs reflects a multidisciplinary approach, showing children that true

innovation lives at the intersections. The tools — resin printers, laser cutters, robotics, AR/VR — are just the beginning; the true outcome is mastery, when knowledge across disciplines converges into creativity.

“At Cresconova Labs, creativity is not the opposite of rigor; it is the highest form of it, preparing children not just to consume technology but to create it,” says Christine Braun, Cresconova’s Chief Creative O cer, formerly Director of REEF Makerspace, Harvard University.

While children are immersed in these experiences, parents are not forgotten. A calm, light-filled lounge o ers co ee, curated books, and work-friendly spaces. For many, it becomes a mini-retreat, a welcome pause before the rhythm of family life resumes.

Cresconova Labs’ vision is clear: to o er the community something truly new — an experience where curiosity meets creativity, where children build resilience and imagination, and where tomorrow’s innovators begin their journey.

workspace than a traditional classroom. It’s inspiring to see our senior pupils engage confidently in this innovative environment.

Forward THINKING

Headteacher Lindie Louw outlines her philosophy for Hazelwood School

As Head of Hazelwood School, I’m deeply committed to the formative years of education. These early years not only shape what children know, but who they become. At Hazelwood, our mission goes beyond academic excellence; we focus on developing empathetic, adaptable, collaborative, and curious young people. In an ever-changing world, children must be equipped with both knowledge and essential human skills—such as the ability to listen, problem-solve, and apply their learning creatively to real-world situations.

Hazelwood is a coeducational Nursery and Prep School for children aged 9 months to 13 years, set in 25 acres of woodland on the Surrey-Kent border. We pride ourselves on o ering a dynamic curriculum, outstanding facilities, and a

forward-thinking approach to teaching.

A recent innovation at Hazelwood is our Flexible Classroom scheme

Initially a small trial, this has transformed the learning environment school-wide. Children now choose how they learn best— whether on comfy seating, floor seating, standing desks, or in quiet zones. There are designated areas for independent study, focused one-to-one support, or collaborative brainstorming at circular tables. This flexibility has fostered greater engagement, curiosity, and ownership over their learning. We’ve seen children thrive, whether sitting on wobble stools, working at standing desks, or sitting on the floor with a lap desk. The environment encourages exploration, fostering both personal and academic growth.

We’ve also recently opened our Upper School Learning Centre for Years 7&8. Designed for collaboration and independent thinking, it feels more like a creative

Additionally, the relocation of our Reception classes to the main campus has been a game-changer. Our youngest children are now fully integrated into the school community, enjoying new spaces for play, including a large all-weather awning for year-round outdoor play, a sandpit and a dedicated Forest School development area. It’s already proving to be a magical space where our 4- and 5-year-olds are thriving—learning, playing, and growing with joy and confidence.

Wellbeing is central to our school philosophy. Our Wellbeing Hub, launched last year, provides a safe space for children needing calm, support, or extra help with learning. We know that happy children learn best, and we are dedicated to nurturing the whole child.

Hazelwood remains committed to innovation, academic excellence, and empowering children to grow, explore, and flourish. I’m truly privileged to lead such a forward-thinking school.

Family home

Why tailored legal and tax planning is key to protecting both your wealth and your wishes

For many of us, the family home is far more than bricks and mortar. It is a place where life unfolds, where birthdays are celebrated, milestones marked, and everyday moments become treasured memories. It is where younger generations laugh and play while older generations catch up over co ee and cake. A home is the backdrop against which

children and grandchildren grow, and where memories to treasure for a lifetime are made.

For some families, a home may even span lifetimes. Generations have been born, raised, and in some cases, lived out their final years under the same roof. Today, households take many shapes: single-parent families, blended families, cohabiting partners, or multiple generations living together. Each brings its own story, but all share the same truth: the family home is an asset that deserves careful thought and protection.

From a legal and financial perspective, the home is also one of the most valuable assets a person is likely to own. This is why it is imperative to deal with it properly, either through a carefully drafted Will or as part of wider lifetime tax planning.

Where there is no Will, the intestacy rules will dictate who inherits the home. This can have disastrous consequences if, for example, a surviving spouse or cohabitee does not own a share in the property, or if the property is owned as tenants in common. In such cases, the surviving partner may not automatically inherit the deceased’s share, leaving them in a vulnerable position. They may have to make a claim against the estate to secure their future in the home which is an additional burden at an already di cult time.

Even for married couples, intestacy rules do not always ensure the entire property passes to the surviving spouse. Depending on the value of the estate, and whether there are children, the property could be divided in ways that are neither tax-e cient nor reflective of the deceased’s true wishes.

Blended families also bring unique considerations. Provision may need to be made for children from previous relationships. In these cases, life interest trusts in the Will can be an e ective way of safeguarding the deceased’s share of the property, ensuring both the surviving partner and children are provided for fairly.

With thoughtful planning and the right legal advice, you can make sure your family home is protected not only as an asset, but as a legacy. At Owen White Catlin, we help clients put the right structures in place so their wishes are respected and their loved ones are safeguarded for generations to come.
