LETTER Editor’s

After spending three years studying for a Journalism degree, and then turning down the opportunity to travel the world with my friends, I landed my first ever professional job in the industry. I bought a new suit – although when I walked into the office and saw everyone in casual clothes I felt slightly over dressed – and after a quick chinwag with my new editor, I was given my first assignment: an interview with a radiator company. I was underwhelmed, but now realise how ahead of the time my editor was back then.

You see, focusing on lifestyle journalism, I saw myself interviewing the stars, attending VIP events, and being the man every new restaurant/pub/bar wanted to invite down. Radiators, for me, were just to heat a room. But given how interior design has evolved, and the many influencers we now see on our social media pages, my editor clearly saw this as a chance to beat the pack with an exclusive and I now look back on my first piece with an element of pride.

It's why when our Absolutely Home special comes along I get particularly excited. There is so much to enjoy in the home right now and inside we look at the latest trends and get some top tips from those in the know. Talk about hot stuff.

Long time Buckinghamshire resident Steve Backshall is hitting the arena trail this month and something deadly lies in store

Ifeel absolutely ridiculous admitting it, but I am in the middle of telling Steve Backshall about an incident that happened to me the week before we chat. I was clearing out our garage, which is home to basically anything we don’t want in the house, when I dislodged something and a huge – and I mean huge –spider leapt out. I may have shrieked. This is the second time I have interviewed the naturalist, writer, explorer and TV presenter, and the second time I have embarrassed myself. The last time, back in 2021, was when I got a little tongue tied admitting my admiration for his physique, so I quickly move the chat on to what else we discussed then, which was when he was about to leave his Marlow home for Kyrgyzstan’s Tien Shan mountains to search for snow leopards. “The expedition was one of the most successful we’ve ever done,” Steve looks back. “We managed to

do the first survey ever on a population of snow leopards living in isolation, and it turned out that it might well be one of the healthiest populations in the whole world!”

The reason Steve’s physique came up before was thanks to his stint on Strictly Come Dancing, and since then he has starred in another TV behemoth: Taskmaster “Taskmaster is probably my favourite television show, it always keeps you guessing, it’s always funny, and the people involved are absolutely hysterical,” he says on that. “I couldn’t believe it when they asked me to be on it. I was supposed to be away filming, but I shifted everything so I could do it, and it will always be a couple of the funniest days I’ve ever had in my life! Alex Horne should be a national treasure, without question the nicest, most creative man in television.”

Now, and the reason for my spider admission, the subject is a new tour for Steve as he takes his popular BBC franchise, Deadly, across the UK. A jumping spider

doesn’t really stack up against some of the creatures Steve has come across in his time filming the many series. “I would say the top three moments in Deadly history would be swimming outside the cage with great white sharks, diving underneath a jade green Antarctic iceberg as a giant female leopard seal flashes her teeth into the camera, and the first time I ever held a King cobra, the world’s largest venomous snake, in my hands.” Enough said.

Deadly 60 was arguably Steve’s big TV breakthrough, although he first rose to prominence in the early 2000s through his work with the National Geographic Channel and later the BBC, where he established himself as a charismatic guide to the natural world. Deadly 60 launched in 2009, which saw him travel the globe in search of the world’s most dangerous and fascinating animals. The show was a critical and commercial success, spawning multiple spin-o s including Deadly 60 Bites, Live ’n’ Deadly, and Deadly Pole to Pole

“Swimming outside the cage with great was one of the most unforgettable moments of my career”
“The energy I get from people about nature is the most special part of my job”

So why is he keen to now transfer these experiences to the stage? “I’ve been doing live shows for about 15 years now and they’re one of the highlights of my job. It’s a chance to get the most response from people,” he explains. “After all, I spend most of my life in the jungle miles away from anyone, and never really get any feedback about what I do. I have the opportunity to talk to tens of thousands of people about wildlife, everything from modern stu like snakes and spiders, scorpions, birds of prey and big cats, all the way back to the greatest of the dinosaurs.”

We have been promised daring stunts, mind-blowing experiments, and cuttingedge science, in a thrilling live show that takes audiences across land, sky, and sea in a truly unique wildlife spectacle. “I’ve been writing this show for nearly a year now, coming up with all of the stunts and fun bits that are going to happen, scripting, editing videos, preparing props,” Steve says. “Obviously my hope is that people are going to leave the arena having laughed their socks o and learn plenty too.”

The fact the tour is short and sweet and covers the October half-term perhaps suggests who, ultimately, the show is aimed at. “For me the real highlight is seeing youngsters who have an enormous knowledge about the natural world. We are going to be so reliant on them to protect our planet in the future. Seeing them excited and inspired now, it’s just massive.”

Does he feel enough is being done to encourage the younger generation to take an interest in the world around them? “I feel more is being done now than it ever has been done before in human history, but it’s still not enough,” he states. “We all know that there is a huge amount of pressure on young people and temptation in the form of new media and devices, and it’s very di cult to make nature as exciting. But it’s critical that we do what we have to, to take on this challenge because nature o ers young people all the things they really need and without it this generation is going to be lacking so much. So much of the malaise of the modern world can be cured through oldfashioned things like activity in the outdoors, physical experimentation, and interaction with the natural landscape. And it’s free!”

Considering we started with a chat about clearing out a garage, I have to ask Steve about leaving Marlow behind

for life by the coast in the South West of England. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that we will be back to Marlow sometime in the future, but right now the allure of Cornwall, the sea, the wildlife, the simple life for our kids and their childhood is pretty overpowering,” he admits.

To end, then, after lamenting my own bravery, I feel the need to try and understand where Steve’s courage comes from. “I’ve always worked with wildlife and in the outdoors and with adventure, so it all comes quite naturally to me now,” he says. “I actually feel far more scared being out in a big city at night than I ever do working with animals. Doing things like Deadly I’m genuinely in my happy place, not many people around, and those that are are ones that I love and trust, and we’re out having an awesome time going looking for the kinds of wildlife that we’ve always loved. It’s the best job in the world!”

Every Step of the Way

“Cliveden Literary Festival is a forum for lively discussion, thought-provoking ideas and political debate in a beautiful setting”

BOOK MARK

This month, two huge literature festivals are heading our way. Absolutely turns the page to find out what we can expect to see and hear

Ian Rankin, Salman Rushdie, Richard E Grant, Douglas Murray, Jung Chang, Niall Ferguson, Hallie Rubenhold and Alain de Botton: just some of the big names that have been announced to appear at the Cliveden Literary Festival, which returns over the weekend of 11th-12th October.

Taking place at the historic Cliveden House, this year’s festival features the leading writers of today across culture, politics and history. Michael Gove and Sarah Vine will tell Andrew Roberts about their marriage and divorce in the political spotlight; Salman Rushdie and Rachel Eliza Gri ths will discuss their creative partnership; beloved actor Richard E Grant will talk to Georgia Beaufort about the highs and lows of Hollywood and his personal life; renowned philosopher Alain de Botton will discuss his theories of love, heartbreak and sorrow; and Wild Swans author Jung Chang and The Silk Roads’ Peter Frankopan will consider the past, present and future of China with Geordie Greig. Meanwhile, panels of experts will gather to discuss 2025’s most compelling issues. In the political sphere, guests will learn about intrigue inside the White House, the divided American nation, and 21st century espionage. In the literary realm, visitors will hear about the enduring allure of Jane Austen, or the writing of crime stories both real and fictional. And the most pressing questions in British politics will be crossexamined in Cliveden’s very own Question Time, with Alex Burghart and Emily Maitlis. Across the weekend, the festival will host a stellar cast of writers, philosophers, polemicists and politicians, including Elif Shafak, Marlon James, Anthony Horowitz, William Boyd, Joanna Coles, Peter Godwin, Helen Castor, Patrick Marber, Tristram Hunt, Merve Emre, Jake Sullivan, Bari Weiss, Andrew Davies, Tina Brown, James Marriott, Charles Moore, Jonathan Bate, David McCloskey, Dambisa Moyo, Jonathan Freedland, Robert DouglasFairhurst, Nicholas Boggs, Mark Rosenblatt, Gordon Corera, Lucy Hughes-Hallett, Freya Johnston, Robert Hardman, Sarah

Cliveden Literary Festival is renowned as a forum for lively discussion, thoughtprovoking ideas, and political debate, in the most beautiful of settings, with something for everyone. Last year, Elif Shafak described the festival as a cultural space we leave “feeling much more nurtured, nourished and inspired”; Rachel Eliza Gri ths said “the setting of Cliveden… is a kind of mirror of the beauty that I find in books”. Now in its eighth year, the festival revives Cliveden House’s rich history as a literary salon frequented by writers and thinkers from Alexander Pope to Alfred

Lord Tennyson, George Bernard Shaw, Jonathan Swift and Sir Winston Churchill.

Cliveden Literary Festival is run by a committee of writers and historians: Andrew Roberts, Natalie Livingstone, Catherine Ostler and Simon Sebag Montefiore. Cliveden Literary Festival launched in 2017. Previous speakers at the festival include Zadie Smith, Marlon James, Emerald Fennell, Armando Iannucci, Sir Simon Schama, Edward Enninful, Hanif Kureishi, Edmund de Waal, Amor Towles, Sebastian Faulks, Ben Okri, Brian Cox, Leila Slimani, David Baddiel, Sebastian Barry, Tina Brown, Howard Jacobson, Peter Frankopan, Chibundu Onuzo, Lionel Shriver, Kate Bingham, Hallie Rubenhold, Lady Antonia Fraser, Tristram Hunt, Jonathan Bate, Camilla Long, John Preston, Tristram Hunt, David Olusoga, Misha Glenny, Tanya Byron, Yana Peel, Jonathan Freedland and Hannah Rothschild. FOUND FESTIVAL

It was a first event to remember at Buckinghamshire’s Claydon Estate

The first edition of Found Festival, the UK’s newest boutique gathering over the August bank holiday at the scenic Claydon Estate in Buckinghamshire, was a shining success, delivering three days of cultural discovery, familyfriendly fun, and grassroots music. Born from the 60-year legacy of Towersey Festival, the family-led team behind Found aims to build on its success with the announcement of its return in summer 2026, with a new tiered ticketing system to ensure accessibility for all, with prices frozen at 2025 levels.

Festival co-director, Joe Heap says: “Found is an event built with love, creativity, and a whole lot of hard work. We’re delighted with how our first year has gone, despite the challenges. It’s increasingly hard to run an independent festival, and none of it would have been possible without the incredible support of our community. From the artists and crew to everyone who took a chance on something new, it was a huge e ort.”

Found 2026 is set to take place from Friday 28th August to Monday 31st August, and to ensure accessibility for all, three ticket tiers have been introduced. The Supporter tier allows those who can to pay a little extra and subsidise lower-priced tickets. The Standard tier covers the minimum cost required to produce the event. The Supported tier o ers a subsidised rate for those who need financial assistance and will only be released once enough Supporter tickets are sold.

At the debut Found Festival, the diverse programme championed “head-turners not headliners” across Americana, folk and world music, plus comedy, workshops, and a dedicated wellbeing programme. Highlights included soaring performances by country music star Elles Bailey, Talisk’s jaw-dropping virtuosity, sea-shanty superstars The Longest Johns and the soulful ferocity of Honeyfeet. Comedy luminaries Robin Ince and Marcel Leconte kept laughter on tap, while Professor Elemental’s steampunk antics and Nutty Noah’s acrobatic storytelling enchanted families.

The site came alive with Ceilidhs, dance and craft workshops in the daytime, and once the live bands had finished, silent discos kept everyone entertained until the early hours. Guests could recharge among yoga classes, breathwork sessions and a wood-fired sauna.

John Cleese on the enduring appeal of Fawlty Towers, a new book on the acclaimed comedy and a possible third spin o

John Cleese is talking about the runaway success of Fawlty Towers, which heads to the Wycombe Swan Theatre from 29th October. “To be honest, I was more confident about it than almost anything I’ve ever done,” he says. “But life has taught me to be self-deprecating, particularly in the UK; otherwise, you’re accused of being a bit cocky and you get slapped down.

“I remember reading the finished script and thinking it was really funny.

And the English do love farce. Think Ben Travers. Think Brian Rix and Ray Cooney. Look at the success of Noises O and One Man, Two Guvnors. Farce is universal.”

For all his quiet confidence that this evening in the theatre would be enthusiastically received, he couldn’t have predicted its rapturous reception. I sat next to two women, both in their 30s, and not only were they enjoying it, they knew every single word of every sketch written surely before either of them was born. John doesn’t try to hide his pride in this much-loved classic co-created

with first wife, Connie Booth. But he shakes his head in mild wonder at the way in which it seems to have rooted itself in the public consciousness.

“I was told not so long ago of a family who have a game where one of them tries to introduce a quote from Fawlty Towers into the conversation without the other three realising. How great a compliment is that? For instance, if anyone says: ‘Don’t mention the war’, everyone knows its origin.”

The show opened at London’s Apollo theatre in May 2024 and he won’t easily forget the reaction of the first

night audience. “They were literally rocking with laughter.” But then who could resist the self-delusional Basil, once described so brilliantly by John himself as: “Rude but ine cient”?

The Fawlty stage show, niftily directed by Caroline Jay Ranger who scored a huge hit with the West End musical version of Only Fools and Horses, was a resounding success from the o . This ‘new’ production includes some cast changes. Danny Bayne will now play the crane-legged Basil with Mia Austen as his acerbic wife, Sybil. Joanne Clifton, winner alongside Ore Oduba in 2016 of the famed Strictly

“Turn on an episode of Fawlty Towers and the world doesn't seem so bleak”

glitterball, takes on the role of Polly, the woman who pretty much single-handedly prevents Fawlty Towers from collapsing like a pack of cards. Happily, the peerless Paul Nicholas remains as The Major.

It features three of the most cherished sketches, cleverly stitched together (by John himself) with a new finale wrapping up proceedings. Prepare to enjoy yourself all over again.

Miscommunication is the name of the game with a threatened visit by a brace of hotel inspectors followed by a party of German tourists. Then there’s Basil’s ongoing – futile, as it turns out – attempt to keep from Sybil his flutter on the horses with little or no help from Spanish waiter Manuel, played by the excellent Hemi Yeroham.

For two months until recently, an inexhaustible John, 85, has been writing a book called Fawlty Towers: Fawlts And All - My Favourite Moments (to be published by Headline on 9th October) to celebrate 50 years of the comedy milestone.

He and younger daughter Camilla have also been working on developing a reboot of a possible third TV series of Fawlty, set in a Caribbean motel where she will play opposite him as Basil’s illegitimate daughter. And she’s been collaborating with him on a stage musical version of the hit film, A Fish Called Wanda.

Nor does it end there. A new film script called Lookalikes is currently in development. “Originally, it was going to be about those people who stand on Sunset Boulevard in LA pretending to be famous stars,” John says. “That changed when someone came up with the brilliant idea of getting real superstars to play the lookalikes.”

John turned down a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1996. “I asked the authorities if I could call myself Commander Cleese. Absolutely not, apparently. Frankly, I think those things are rather silly. I don’t want a stamp of approval from people I don’t always have that much respect for.”

So, let’s be clear: if John were o ered a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours List, he’d turn it down? “I would. I simply don’t need that sort of validation. It’s enough for me to know – because people often tell me – that I’ve helped them through di cult times by making them laugh.

“They come home, turn on an episode of Fawlty Towers and the world doesn’t seem quite so bleak. That’s my reward. I think we need much more laughter in the world. Just good old-fashioned laughter. There’s nothing to beat it.”

Fawlty Towers - The Play runs at the Wycombe Swan Theatre from 28th October-1st November. See more at FawltyTowersTour.co.uk

The National Trust is an independent conservation charity founded in 1895 by three people: Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley, who saw the importance of the nation’s heritage and open spaces and wanted to preserve them for everyone to enjoy. Today, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the National Trust continues to look after places so people and nature can thrive.

They care for more than 250,000 hectares of countryside, 780 miles of coastline, one million collection items and 500 historic properties, gardens and nature reserves. In 2023/24 they received 25.3 million visitors to their pay for entry sites. The National Trust is for everyone – they were founded for the benefit of the whole nation, and their 5.38 million members, funders and donors, and tens of thousands of volunteers, support their work to care for nature, beauty, history for everyone, forever.

Rural dinner party series

Wild Feasts at Oxmoor Farm has been wowing with its second installment of resident chefs for 2025.

August saw Emily Dobbs, renowned for her creative Sri Lankan cooking, take centre stage, followed by Helen Graham, formerly of Middle Eastern restaurant Bubala, in September – and Mark McCabe of Simon Rogan’s Henrock in the Lake District will be cooking up a storm this month.

Located 30 miles west of London and surrounded by the bucolic Buckinghamshire countryside, Wild Feasts are housed within Oxmoor Farm’s renovated barn, seating 50 guests per feast who sit amongst sharing tables. Over a Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime, each guest chef creates fourcourses in their signature style, including canapes, utilising the best of what’s available from the surrounding Chiltern Hills.

Outdoor DINING

Wild Feasts returns to the Buckinghamshire countryside this month with a special menu created by acclaimed chef Mark McCabe

Now in its fourth year, the first cohort of Wild Feasts chefs for 2025 saw Eve Seeman, Ivan Tisdall Downes, Tom Mumford, Ollie Dabbous and Masaki Sugisaki cook two days of feasts on the farm. Mark McCabe will be heading up Wild Feasts on 25th and 26th October. Mark trained in kitchens in Paris and Lancashire before joining Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage in Dorset. He was then chef-owner of The Ethicurean in Bristol, a Michelin Green Star-awarded restaurant known for its eco-conscious approach to dining, which closed in 2023. Mark relocated to the Lake District to take on the role of head chef at Henrock in early 2024. At Henrock, Mark’s menu combines Simon Rogan’s global culinary influences with a strong emphasis on hyperlocal ingredients and wild foods from the surrounding countryside. In 2023 and 2025, Mark represented Scotland in the BBC’s Great British Menu, and this year made it through to the series’ final banquet.

In addition to this, breakfast is now served at The Barn restaurant from 10-11.45am on Saturdays and Sundays. The newly created menu – from Head Chef Tomas Topolar – draws on produce from the surrounding Chiltern Hills.

Dishes include pastries from Nena’s Craft Bakery in Amersham, alongside a house-made mushroom roll with portobello mushroom, tarragon butter and chimichurri, and a fennel & lemon sausage roll with piccalilli. Overnight oats, farm granola & yoghurt, and toasted porridge bread with jam and butter are also on o er. Oxmoor’s own farm-made apple juice is served, along with cocktails such as the Bloody Mary, Vegan Mary and Orchid Fizz. The Barn restaurant, which operates every Thursday-Sunday when the Wild Feasts aren’t being held, o ers a menu of pizzas and small plates for lunch and dinner.

Orange Alert

Visiting Charles Palmer Vineyard

Perched on the coast near Winchelsea in East Sussex, Charles Palmer Vineyard is a family-run a air with a fl air for the elegant and a serious obsession with great wine. Owned and operated by the Palmer family since 1998, the estate makes the most of its south-facing slopes, sea-kissed air, and Kimmeridgian clay soils (the same stu found in Champagne and Chablis). With a hands-on approach and meticulous attention to detail, they’ve built a name for producing refi ned English fi zz and characterful still wines. And now, they’ve thrown something a little zestier into the mix: their fi rst-ever orange wine.

Made from Chardonnay cold-soaked on its skins for 80 hours, it’s gloriously amber in the glass with melon, apricot, and bruised apple on the nose, and flavours of orange peel, honey, and hazelnut on the palate. Bold, textural, and full of autumnal charm, it’s best served lightly chilled. Whether you're grazing on charcuterie, tucking into strong cheeses, or settling in for a cosy night on the sofa, consider this your new cold-weather pour.

Country Style, REDEFINED

Step into the new season with E.J. Churchill's autumn/winter collection

The first chill of autumn changes everything.

Mornings are sharper, the light is lower, and the landscape seems to shift overnight. Suddenly, the coat you reach for becomes the centre of your wardrobe. It needs to be practical and warm, but also elegant enough to carry you through the whole day. From a frosty dog walk to Sunday lunch by the fire, the right piece should feel e ortless in every setting. This is the rhythm of modern country living, where days flow from outdoors to indoors and wardrobes have to adapt. Country style has always been rooted in function, but today it is just as much about refinement. A wax jacket and boots may still have their place, but now they sit alongside tailored coats, lightweight performance layers, and accessories that bring personality as well as comfort.

E.J. Churchill’s Country Clothing store has become a destination for those who appreciate this balance. Tucked within

the grounds of the shooting ground, it brings together some of the most respected names in British fashion. Each piece has been chosen for its ability to work hard in di erent contexts, to feel as at home in town as it does in the field, and to last well beyond one season.

Accessories add another layer of individuality. A shawl in a bold print, an elegant shirt and perfect boot can turn a practical outfit into something memorable. Details matter, and they are what make stepping outside on a crisp autumn morning feel like a pleasure.

What emerges is a new interpretation of country style. One that honours tradition but feels entirely modern. One that allows you to enjoy autumn, confident that whatever the day brings, your wardrobe is ready to meet it.

LIFT OFF

Carly Glendinning gets serious about weight lifting with personal trainer, Charlotte Dunn

The weights area in my gym is definitely no longer a totally male-dominated area, but for some reason I still felt intimidated. Blame it on being a Millennial (yawn!), but the mere thought of being 'mansplained' or o ered help to move the bench was enough to put me o . The time had come, however, to take my weight lifting to the next level, so I decided to enlist personal trainer Charlotte Dunn to work with me on my confidence. Super warm and genuinely lovely to work with, Charlotte specialises in creating 1:1 training programmes. She blends a variety of methods including strength training,

cardiovascular work, and Pilates, working with her clients face-to-face in her luxurious fitness studio in London or virtually. We started with a video consultation where I explained my goals and we chatted through my existing routine. Charlotte came back with a smart, glute-focused plan. As my strength built, we took things up a notch. I took Charlotte on-camera with me to the gym, where she virtually held my hand through my first barbell lifts and laid the groundwork for pull-up training, something I’d always wanted to do. Charlotte encouraged me to lift heavier, train with intention,

and own my space on the gym floor. Her ultra-approachable coaching style made every session feel empowering. But what really stood out was how she gave me the tools (and belief!) to level up.

he Elleebana Lash Lift claims to be the world’s fastest lash lift. In about half an hour it lifts and curls natural lashes, making them appear longer and fuller. It promises natural and long-lasting results with minimal maintenance for stunning lashes. So what’s not to like?

I visit the Everlasting Salon in London to experience it. Any doubts I have are quickly dispelled by the friendly, informative vibe. The process is surprisingly relaxing: I lie back with my eyes closed while the technician carefully curls and sets my lashes using a gentle perming solution. There’s no discomfort at all, maybe just a slight tingling, but nothing bothersome.

The results are immediate and impressive. My lashes look longer, darker, and beautifully curled. As if I had just used an eyelash curler and a great mascara, but more natural and with no clumps. I can wake up, wash my face, and go, without needing to touch my lashes. They look polished all the time.

Five weeks in and my lashes are still holding their curl well. If you’re looking for a natural, long-lasting way to enhance your lashes without extensions or daily upkeep, I highly recommend trying a lash lift. It’s a small beauty investment that makes a big di erence. I feel more confident with minimal e ort – and honestly, who doesn’t want that?

Designing for Nature

How landscape architecture is leading the way in Biodiversity Net Gain

As Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) becomes a legal requirement in the UK, Thamebased HollandGreen is embracing the policy not as a new challenge, but as a continuation of the values it has upheld for years. Since 2019, the landscape design studio has championed ecological landscape design, creating gardens that nurture wildlife, connect people with the natural world and bring enduring value to both place and planet.

“Biodiversity shouldn’t be an afterthought,” says Mark Latchford, Director of Landscape Design at HollandGreen. “It’s central to how we design. When we put biodiversity at the heart of a garden, we’re not just supporting

wildlife, we’re giving people spaces that feel alive, rooted in nature and full of joy. The benefits go both ways: vibrant habitats for insects, birds and animals, and soulful, restorative spaces for humans.”

As of February 2024, BNG is a statutory requirement in England under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Developers must ensure that every project results in a measurable improvement in biodiversity of at least 10%, and that these gains are sustained for a minimum of 30

years. “It’s a challenging but necessary benchmark,” adds Mark. “Nature doesn’t bounce back overnight, it needs time, care and thoughtful planning. Holding ourselves accountable over three decades means designing with resilience in mind, so that ecosystems have time to take root and flourish.” HollandGreen’s recent projects demonstrate what it looks like to embed biodiversity from the ground up, where sustainability isn’t a constraint, but a creative opportunity.

ARCHERS FARMHOUSE

A GARDEN THAT TREADS LIGHTLY AND ENRICHES DEEPLY

The garden at Archers Farmhouse, nestled between woodland and a gentle brook, exemplifies harmony between formal design and wild landscape. It is designed to encourage exploration while enriching

local biodiversity. A hand-built timber bridge spans the brook, connecting formal areas with the surrounding woodland. Native planting supports pollinators and birdlife, while carefully sourced local boulders and natural timber guide the eye and foot through the space. A shepherd’s hut and fire pit tucked among the trees provide peaceful places for retreat, further connecting the family to the natural environment around them.

“This is a garden that blends structure with softness,” Mark explains. “Every element – materials, pathways, planting – was chosen to settle gently into the landscape.” The project’s success was recognised with a Gold award for Biodiversity & Sustainability at the 2025 APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) Awards, underlining its impact and lasting value.

VERDANCE HOUSE

Mark and the team were thrilled to receive this testimonial from their delighted client: “I have just spent the last few hours working outside watching the most beautiful and healthy-looking bumblebees, bees in general, butterflies and all sorts of other pollinators enjoying the new plants, which seem to have taken hold so well. It is an absolute joy to watch and is always what I hoped for.”

MEADOW VIEW: A LANDSCAPE THAT LETS NATURE LEAD

At Meadow View in Oxfordshire, the design brief began with one key principle: don’t overwrite the landscape – enhance it. The site, an overgrown field rich in native life, was already home to protected Great Crested Newts. Working closely with Natural England, ecologists and arborists, HollandGreen’s team ensured the garden would protect and expand the existing ecosystem.

A disused clay pit was transformed into a thriving wildlife pond. Native Hornbeam, Pine, Holly and Birch were added to enrich the woodland canopy.

“ We design every garden with a thousand years in mind”

A 100% native wildflower meadow was sown to support bees, butterflies and birds. Instead of imposing rigid zones, meandering paths lead visitors to quiet clearings and a gothic-style folly, designed from the remnants of a former cottage.

“We wanted every decision to elevate what was already thriving,” says Mark. Nothing was wasted: soil from the pond became hibernaculas; felled wood became stumperies and log piles; even turf offcuts were repurposed as insect habitats. Today, Meadow View hums with life –frogs, bats, dragonflies, deer and grass snakes all call it home.

VERDANCE HOUSE: A LANDSCAPE THAT LIVES AND BREATHES

For a protected site in Surrey, HollandGreen has designed a contemporary new-build family home and richly biodiverse garden that reflects the natural rhythms of its setting. From the outset, the surrounding landscape was considered integral to the proposed project’s success. The garden’s design includes native hedging, wildflower meadows and nectar-rich planting, which

will draw birds, bees and butterflies throughout the seasons, making the garden feel both immersive and alive. A wildlife corridor has been strategically designed to enhance biodiversity by over 10%, to create safe routes and habitats for small mammals, insects and amphibians. A newly planted orchard – paying homage to the site’s historical land use – will add beauty and productivity, while ecoconscious materials such as recycled concrete, composite timber and selfbinding gravel will reinforce the garden’s low-impact credentials.

Even the build process will be shaped by ecological sensitivity. To preserve mature trees, including ancient oaks lining the entrance, the plans include hand-dug pad foundations to avoid disturbing delicate root systems. “This approach means the landscape won’t just survive the construction, it’ll thrive alongside it,” says Mark.

As BNG shapes the future of planning and development, HollandGreen’s projects show how biodiversity can do more than meet a target, it can shape the soul of a space. “BNG gives us a framework,” concludes Mark. “But for us, it’s about something deeper: designing places that respect the land, restore ecosystems and reconnect us with the wild beauty all around us. We design every garden with a thousand years in mind, so future generations benefit from the work we carry out today.”

Visiting a contemporary log cabin retreat in Marlow’s woodland canopy

“Living spaces unfold upstairs to capitalise on the stunning leafy outlook”

This four-bedroom, twostorey house lies in Quarry Wood, a picturesque and biodiverse pocket on the outskirts of Marlow. Wrapped in windows, the house surveys its own private acre of landscaped grounds, with views stretching towards the river beyond. Inside, comforting rusticity is paired with sleek, modern fi nishes across more than 1,900 sq ft. Though wonderfully secluded, the setting is far from remote; nearby Maidenhead station runs Elizabeth line services into central London in around 40 minutes.

Entry is to a wide hallway, where storage is neatly tucked beneath the stairs and pale, warm-toned tiles run underfoot. Walls throughout are fi nished in soft, neutral tones and lit by Lutron fittings that have been discreetly installed throughout the house.

Living spaces unfold upstairs to capitalise on the leafy outlook. The kitchen, dining and sitting rooms form a circular open-plan layout that feels at once free-flowing and clearly defined. Reclaimed floorboards run underfoot and pine panels line the walls, creating a sense of softness and warmth. An open fireplace set into an exposed stone wall sits between the dining and sitting areas, subtly delineating the two zones. The kitchen lies beneath a voluminous pitched ceiling on the southern side of the plan. Bespoke mild steel cabinetry is

topped with a mix of Calacatta Vagli marble and hardy steel worktops. A DeVol island unit has a Quooker hot water tap and La Cornue appliances, while a fitted bar houses a fridge/freezer and wine cooler.

Windows wrap the house, bringing the outside in. A bespoke seating area with a built-in TV sits beside the kitchen, and from here, double doors open onto a perfectly placed balcony, also accessed from the sitting room, which offers beautiful views through the foliage.

Two bedrooms lie on the first floor, including a generous principal suite beneath

a panelled pitched ceiling. A wood-burning stove adds warmth and atmosphere, while the en-suite bathroom is finished with an elegant clawfoot bathtub and fittings by The Water Monopoly. The second bedroom on this floor also has its own en-suite.

Downstairs are two further bedrooms. One has an en-suite shower room and opens directly onto the garden, while the other has a fireplace and double doors that lead out to a ground-floor terrace. A utility room and separate WC complete the plan.

The acre of private gardens has been carefully designed by Patrick Clarke and Flint Garden Design and brought to life by Chelsea Flower Show-winning contractor Yoreland Design. The planting is mature and considered, while the layout creates several places to sit, eat and entertain. A paved terrace extends from one of the ground-floor bedrooms, while the first-floor balcony offers a wonderfully elevated perspective of the surrounding woodland and water.

The house lies just outside Marlow, set on a picturesque stretch of the Thames. The town is known for its period architecture and culinary credentials, with Tom Kerridge’s two Michelin-starred The Hand and Flowers and one-starred The Coach, as well as The Butcher’s Tap & Grill, The Oarsman, and Fego, alongside familiar favourites such as The Ivy and Gail’s.

The Chilterns National Landscape is moments away, offering miles of walking and cycling routes, while Westhorpe Water Park is close by for paddleboarding, kayaking and outdoor swimming. There are several well-regarded schools in the area, including Herries Prep and others in nearby Maidenhead. From there, the Elizabeth line runs direct services to Paddington and beyond. The M40 is also easily reached by car.

The house in Tommerhytte is on the market with a guide price of £2,500,000. For more information, visit sothebysrealty.co.uk

PARTY PIECE

Carl Hansen & Søn presents a wider version of Børge Mogensen’s hunting table from 1950

The Hunting Table embodies Børge Mogensen’s unique ability to merge robust craftsmanship with aesthetic, functional details in which the materials speak for themselves. After relaunching the table in its original dimensions in 2018, Carl Hansen & Søn is now introducing a wider, more spacious version to accommodate larger dinner parties.

The structural design of the Hunting Table comprises two solid-wood trestles with angled legs supporting a slim veneer tabletop with rounded corners and solid-wood edging. Stability is maximized by two diagonal brace bars mounted between the frame and tabletop in brass or stainless steel – a functional touch that accentuates the table’s handcrafted expression. Another refined detail is showcased in the table legs’ through-tenon joint, secured with contrasting wood wedges, meticulously hand-sanded and finished by the skilled artisans at Carl Hansen & Søn.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn, said: “Børge Mogensen originally designed the elegant Hunting Table for the Cabinetmaker Guild’s Furniture Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1950 under the theme ‘The Hunting Cabin’, for which he also designed the BM1106 Huntsman Chair. These tables bear the distinct hallmark of Børge Mogensen by uniting his sense for simplicity and complexity in an exquisite design. After several years on the market, we’ve experienced an increasing demand for a wider version of the Hunting Table, which is why we’re pleased to present this spacious table that seats eight.”

Bathroom

OF THE MONTH

A soft sculptural sanctuary by bathroom design specialists, Ripples

After 25 years without a single update, this homeowner’s bathroom in Thatcham was ready for a rethink. Once dark and dated, it has been reimagined as a soft and sculptural retreat – a space that balances function with indulgence and feels completely personal to its owner. The homeowner’s vision was clear from the outset: a calm palette layered with warmth, natural textures and just the right amount of glamour.

From mood board to reality

The homeowner approached Ripples in Newbury with Pinterest boards filled with ideas. She had a love for marble-effect finishes, brushed gold brassware and touches of wood to echo the natural materials used elsewhere in the home. Working with Ripples Newbury Assistant Manager

Leanne, those preferences were carefully refined into a cohesive scheme that combined practicality with atmosphere. The layout was designed to maximise light and flow. A freestanding bath was positioned adjacent to the window to take advantage of natural brightness, while a shower enclosure, wall-hung WC and vanity unit were arranged along the opposite wall to keep the space open and easy to navigate. What could have been a challenge – pipework running down from the ceiling – was cleverly transformed into ledges and alcoves, adding storage and styling opportunities.

A layered palette

The choice of finishes was central to the bathroom’s new identity. While highgloss marble tiles initially appealed, a matt version proved the better option, offering a softer look and safer, easier maintenance. These were paired with blush-toned tiles laid in a herringbone pattern, bringing gentle colour and

The result is a bathroom that manages to be both glamorous and grounded

movement to the walls. To add warmth, a wood-effect vanity unit was introduced, its natural texture balancing out the sleek porcelain surfaces. Throughout the space, brushed gold details – from the shower screen and taps to the towel radiator – tie the scheme together, providing cohesion as well as a touch of understated glamour.

Light as a feature

Lighting was considered as carefully as the tiles and fittings. Rather than relying solely on ceiling spots, the room is softly illuminated with alcove lighting, a backlit mirror and striking pendant lights suspended above the bath. This layered approach provides a gentle, spa-like glow that enhances the sculptural qualities of the room. Subtle details such as ambient lighting beneath the wall-hung vanity unit add to the overall effect, ensuring the space feels just as atmospheric at night as it does in daylight.

Practical elegance

As much as the design emphasises luxury, it was equally important that the bathroom worked on a practical level. A freestanding bath was chosen for comfort and proportion, and the wallhung WC makes cleaning simpler while

highlighting the porcelain floor tiles beneath. The vanity drawers provide ample storage for everyday essentials without clutter, while recessed alcoves in the shower neatly accommodate refillable bottles.

Even heating was approached with functionality in mind. Instead of underfloor heating, a generous towel radiator was specified, ensuring the space remains warm while keeping the floor tiles pleasantly neutral underfoot.

Finishing touches

With each detail carefully considered – from the clever use of lighting to the finish of the tiles – the result is a bathroom that manages to be both glamorous and grounded. It functions seamlessly for quick showers yet invites its owner to linger with a book in the bath at the end of the day.

After years of waiting, the room has been transformed into a private sanctuary that feels as good to use as it does to admire.

Kitchen ideals

What does the kitchen of 2025 look like? Absolutely asks two companies for their verdicts

BLAKES

blakeslondon.com

The days of uniformity are behind us; today’s kitchens thrive on contrast, texture, and layering. Wood, stone, metal, glass, and even concrete are combined in inventive ways to craft spaces that feel bespoke and carefully considered. When rooted in quality and authenticity, trend-inspired design endures long after the trend has passed. Proportion is key: a kitchen should feel balanced, harmonious, and effortless in everyday life. Craftsmanship and materiality matter enormously. By using luxurious natural materials and finishes, and combining them with high-quality joinery, each design gains

richness and depth that improves over time. Without chasing trends, the occasional on-trend element can be incorporated successfully if it feels true to the space and is executed with coherence, consistency, and refined finishes. Successful material juxtaposition relies on a coherent palette, careful attention to scale and proportion, and strategic lighting to highlight textures and surfaces. The aim is to create a kitchen that supports the way a home is lived in, and provides a backdrop for everyday life and the memories created within it. Mixing materials is no longer a risk; it has become the standard for creating kitchens that are elegant, functional, and timeless.

PLAN AHEAD

Autumn at Stubbings: a season to savour

There’s something truly magical about autumn at Stubbings. As the air turns crisp and the gardens glow in warm shades of amber and gold, this is the season to pause, prepare, and make the most of your outdoor space. Autumn is not simply an ending, it’s the beginning of next year’s garden.

This is the ideal time to plant spring bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and crocuses, which will reward you with vibrant colour after the winter months. Autumn also calls for planting winter bedding – pansies, alliums, and cyclamen provide cheerful displays through colder days and keep containers and borders looking bright.

Soil preparation is key. Adding organic matter or mulch enriches the ground and protects roots from frost. Clearing fallen leaves from lawns helps to prevent bare patches, while pruning back perennials and shrubs promotes strong growth in spring. Don’t forget to lift tender plants, like dahlias, for winter storage, or cover them with fleece if you’d rather keep them in place.

At Stubbings, their garden centre is brimming with seasonal plants, composts, tools, and everything you need to prepare your garden for the months ahead. Most importantly, their expert team is on hand to share advice, whether you’re planting for the first time or refreshing established borders. Autumn is the season to get ahead, and Stubbings is here to help.

Beyond the garden, there’s plenty to enjoy at Stubbings. Families can join them for Spooky Stories and Supper, while adults can look forward to their October Murder Mystery Night with a delicious three-course dinner. And for a cosy seasonal treat, the Stubbings Café is serving hearty specials and the much-loved pumpkin spiced latte.

Stubbings is located to the west of Maidenhead, just off the A404M. They are only five minutes from the M4 (junction 8/9) and 8-10 minutes from the M40 (junction 4). They’re also on the 228 Thames Valley bus route, travelling between Maidenhead, Hurley, and Henley. And for walkers, several beautiful trails pass through Stubbings, so why not plan in a stop with them during your countryside adventure?

everything from design to measurements and installation, while others may simply want supply-only, arranging their own installation but still benefitting from product guarantees. The Windsor showroom plays an important role in this process, allowing customers to see fires up close, compare finishes, and imagine how the products will look in their own homes. Added to this is a price-match promise, which ensures that customers know they are getting fair value.

The same philosophy applies to their flooring and tile offerings. Ideal Settings works with well-known brands such as Porcelanosa, Polyflor, Atkinson & Kirby, and Karndean, all of which are respected for their durability and design. Customers can browse a wide range of materials, textures, and colours in the showroom before deciding what will work best in their space. Just as with fires, the company can take on the entire process from design to fitting, or simply supply the products to homeowners or

tradespeople who want to handle the installation themselves. This flexibility makes them a useful partner for both large renovation projects and smaller upgrades, and their position as an approved retailer means that every purchase comes with the assurance of manufacturer guarantees.

What ties both the fires and flooring sides of the business together is Ideal Settings’ focus on combining design expertise with customer-led service. They are not just a shop, but a one-stop home interiors destination, where people can expect to be guided through their options, supported in making design choices, and reassured by competitive pricing. Fires and flooring are central to this offering: they are the elements that shape the warmth, comfort, and character of a home, and Ideal Settings has positioned itself as a company that can deliver them with style.

Shine A LIGHT ON

Absolutely explores the five key lighting trends Industville has picked out for the autumn/winter season

Refined Textural

This trend embraces tactility as a form of luxury, transforming everyday lighting into artful statements. What once felt purely functional – metal, glass, wood – takes on warmth and dimension through artisanal finishes and handcrafted detailing. Pleated brass shades catch the light with a subtle shimmer, while ribbed or frosted glass diffuses illumination into soft, atmospheric glows. These surfaces invite touch as much as sight, encouraging a deeper sensory connection with the spaces we live in.

The trend pairs beautifully with today’s desire for layered interiors. Lighting is no longer a singular fixture, but a collection of textures, tones, and scales working together. Think wall sconces with hammered metal backplates, pendant clusters with etched glass, or table lamps topped with fabric-like ceramic glazes. The interplay between jewel tones and earthy hues creates a grounding yet elevated palette.

Simple Shaping

Si mple Shaping reflects a growing appreciation for clarity and calm in design. Stripped of unnecessary detail, these pieces highlight form, proportion, and material in their purest

state. The beauty lies in restraint: slim brass frames, alabaster discs, or perfectly rounded globes that radiate a quiet confidence. Instead of overwhelming a room, this lighting style creates a serene rhythm, offering a sense of balance and refinement. This trend speaks to the architecture of light itself. Linear pendants draw the eye along dining tables or kitchen islands, while sculptural floor lamps anchor corners with their statuesque presence. Wall lights with geometric silhouettes echo architectural lines, adding structure without stealing focus. The warm glow of alabaster softens sharp edges, while brushed brass or matte black finishes keep the look grounded and timeless.

Simple Shaping works seamlessly across interior styles – from contemporary apartments to heritage homes – because it respects space.

Modern Sculptural

This lighting is all about statementmaking presence. These are not background pieces – they command attention, shaping the atmosphere of a room as much as they illuminate it. Whether it’s a sweeping chandelier with cascading glass or a bold single pendant hovering like a piece of contemporary art, the focus is on form and drama. Larger-than-life proportions bring scale and impact, while organic silhouettes soften the edges, striking a

balance between fluidity and structure. Materiality plays a vital role here. Warmtoned glass – amber, smoke, or bronze – casts a flattering glow, transforming functional light into mood lighting.

Perfect for entertaining, Modern Sculptural lighting creates focal points over dining tables or in living spaces, sparking conversation and setting a dynamic tone. Yet it’s equally effective in creating intimacy, with softer, layered glows ideal for evenings spent at home.

Delicate & Dimensional

Delicate & Dimensional lighting is all about nuance – the subtle interplay between form, shadow, and texture. It celebrates the idea that lighting isn’t just functional, but can become a narrative thread within a space, adding layers of meaning and mood. Gentle curves, fine detailing, and imaginative silhouettes bring a sense of movement, as though the fixtures themselves are part of an unfolding story.

Layered lighting is central to the look. Think pendant lights floating like ornaments above a dining table, paired with sculptural floor lamps that wash walls with soft, dappled light. The goal is to create depth: light that shifts and evolves as the evening unfolds. Materials such as frosted glass and translucent stone add to this dimensional effect, offering glimpses of glow that feel intimate and intriguing.

This trend truly comes alive in moments of gathering. Whether for festive entertaining or quiet evenings, Delicate & Dimensional lighting sets a stage where everyday rituals feel celebratory.

Contemporary Rustic

This brings together the warmth of tradition with the clean lines of modern design, creating spaces that feel grounded yet quietly elevated. At its heart is an appreciation for authenticity – natural materials such as linen, mellow stone, textured metal, and raw-edged wood are celebrated for their inherent character. Rather than disguising imperfections, this look embraces them. Lighting within this trend favours simplicity of form, with unfussy silhouettes that echo the understated elegance of Japandi styling. Picture linen drum shades diffusing a gentle glow, stone bases carved into organic forms, or slender metal frames paired with wool-wrapped cords. The result is lighting that feels tactile and timeless – pieces that complement the wider interior scheme.

Layering is key to achieving the Contemporary Rustic mood. A mix of table lamps, wall sconces, and overhead pendants ensures both functionality and atmosphere, while soft palettes of chalky neutrals, earthy taupes, and muted greens provide a calming backdrop.

MARVELLOUS

MARBLE

How stoneCIRCLE transformed a fabulous architect-designed residence with marble and onyx

This fabulous architectdesigned residence makes stunning use of marble and onyx in all six bathrooms in the property, as well as the kitchen and bar area. The French client chose different types of distinctive onyx and marble for each room, imparting a glamourous feel to the whole property.

The master bathroom is resplendent in Jade Green. The centrepiece is a massive double vanity unit, clad entirely in the marble with the twin basins carved out of the stone and the veining flowing down the wall and across the front of the drawers. The walk-in shower has the same marble on the floor and walls with striking bookmatched veins, fi nished with a built-in marble seat. The same marble is used in the dressing room next door.

Each of the guest bathrooms features a different coloured natural stone and complementary accessories in styles varying from the very feminine with pink onyx, matched with pink wallpaper and vanity unit, to the strikingly masculine with black and gold marble for the floor, walls, and vanity top, and gold coloured taps and basin. Elsewhere, blue marble was teamed with pale blue paint and a wooden floor to create a calm haven in one bathroom, and geometric floor tiles and different shades of blue on the walls for a modern, vibrant feel in another.

In the living area, a beautiful translucent pink onyx bar top and back wall glow with concealed back lighting. And the design is carried through to the floor where discs of the pink onyx have been inset into the wooden parquet flooring. The kitchen is home to a large island entirely clad in gorgeous brown and green onyx which tones with the brown leather bar stools and the wooden parquet floor, perfect for chatting to family and friends while cooking.

All of the stone was manufactured and installed by stoneCIRCLE. The company has been fabricating stone for interiors since 1968, and works with top architects and interior designers on some of the most desirable residences. They have their own teams of installers working across the south of England fitting the stone they fabricate. Please contact them to discuss how you could use stone to transform your home.

Open-plan living, along with so many people now working from home, has made it hard for individuals to find a quiet spot to relax and unwind. As a result, the bathroom is increasingly seen as a private sanctuary. Reading a book or listening to a podcast in the bath has become, for many, an important time-out from the pace of everyday life. Here are a few tips for making your bathroom into the relaxing retreat you need it to be.

DECLUTTER

To create a relaxing setting in which to unwind, you need to declutter. Clear countertops and rehouse toiletries and cleaning materials in a smart vanity unit that fits under the basin or a built-in mirror fronted cabinet. Woven baskets also offer useful, flexible storage.

COLOUR & TEXTURE

Choose calming, nature-inspired colours such as warm beige, sage green or soft blue

SANCTUARY

Jamie Bebbington of Aston Matthews discusses how to create spa-like spaces at home

to instantly cultivate serenity. Then bring the outdoors in with wood or bamboo accessories such as trays, soap holders or stools. Stone or marble accents also evoke spa elegance. Add humidity-loving plants, such as peace lilies and ferns, to purify air and soothe the senses.

AMBIENT LIGHTING

Lighting dramatically impacts mood. Add a dimmer switch to effortlessly shift between bright task light and a soft, spa-like glow. You might consider adding accent lighting, such as LED strips under shelves to intensify the ambience.Candles will also add a cosy flicker to a long, indulgent soak in the tub.

UPDATE YOUR FITTINGS

The only option for bathrooms used to be chrome, but instead consider brass, brushed brass or bronze taps and shower fittings for a less clinical look. Consider indulgent upgrades like drenching showerheads or walk-in showers for openness and sophistication. Heated towel rails and underfloor heating will further enhance comfort and

warmth. And, if space allows, a freestanding bath, especially near a window, is the ultimate spa luxury.

SCENTS & SOUNDS

Incorporate aromatherapy with essential oil diffusers or scented candles in a calming fragrance. And further curate this sensory atmosphere with soft music or nature sounds. Pamper your senses with plush towels, robes and thoughtfully displayed products like scrubs and bath salts.

ADD A SEAT

Even a small vintage chair will elevate comfort and give your bathroom a spa-worthy feel. You will definitely need a small stool next to your freestanding bath to accommodate your scented candle and glass of wine. With these elements, your bathroom can be transformed into a peaceful, spalike haven you’ll want to linger in every day.

DOUBLE VISION

Absolutely meets Upton House School Headteacher, Rhian Thornton, and their new Deputy Head Academics, Matt O’Conor

RHIAN THORNTON

Q What are you excited about as the new academic year gets under way?

A Conkers on in the playgrounds, pumpkins in full bloom and wellies ready for the autumn showers. School should be fun and that is certainly our focus at Upton House. I am so excited about our new state-of-theart science lab to be unveiled in October, our Drone Legends tech fun, and watching the children guess what we are making in our new 3D printer. Dragons, bunnies and cars so far! What will be next?!

Q Can we expect anything new this year?

A Technology, great innovation and fun with the digital world run alongside our great focus on handwriting, reading, maths, STEM and academics.Watch this space as we inspire and innovate the children

through the digital experiences at Upton. We are looking forward to unveiling our brand-new bespoke science laboratory, which is undergoing a complete refurbishment during the October half term. Sport is always a firm favourite here at Upton and our sporting achievements are legendary.

Q What do you think makes your school stand out?

A Technology: broadcasting, technology skills, green screen, 3D printing and indoor drone flying are all part of our digital curriculum. The children guide their drones around the Egyptian pyramids, acting as a safety o cer, pilot and observer before landing with meticulous precision next to the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun. Engineers and pilots of the future begin their journey here at Upton.

MATT O’CONOR CHALLENGING YOUNG MINDS IN THE CLASSROOM

You can see in the photo above some of the wonderful items the children have already printed with the 3D printer this term.

Senior school success: our senior school success is outstanding with children joining Hampton Boys, Wycombe Abbey, Wellington College, St George’s Ascot, St George’s Weybridge, Sir William Perkins’s, Bradfield College, St Mary’s Ascot, Reading Blue Coat, Shiplake College and more. Proudly non-selective, we work with our lovely families to find the very best choice of senior school for every child. Family: as Headmistress at Upton for ten years I see the di erence Upton makes to every child. It is personal for us and every child is unique.I would love to show you Upton in full flow any day of each week. Please do call or email registrar@uptonhouse.org.uk.

I am absolutely delighted to welcome Matt O’Conor as the new Deputy Head Academics at Upton House.

MATT O’CONOR

Q Can you give us a brief overview of your career in education to date?

A After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, I began my teaching career at Ludgrove as a graduate teacher, where I quickly discovered a deep passion for education and school life. I went on to complete my PGCE at the University of Buckingham, continuing to develop both my teaching practice and leadership skills. Over the years, I was fortunate to take on a range of roles, gaining experience across di erent subjects and areas of school life, leading to my appointment

The children guide their drones around the Egyptian pyramids, landing next to the tomb of Tutankhamun

as Assistant Head. More recently, I have taken on the challenge of studying for a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management, which I am completing alongside my professional responsibilities, further deepening my understanding of e ective school leadership.

Q Why were you attracted to working at Upton House?

A There were many things that attracted me to Upton House; impressive facilities including a new ICT suite, state-of-the-art broadcasting studio, new outdoor classroom and a purpose-built art room and science lab in addition to a well-earned reputation for outstanding pastoral care. The school’s forward-thinking approach to technology and innovative curriculum definitely stood out for me as a key strength. I was so impressed with the children themselves, respectful, confident, and full of ambition. Their energy and enthusiasm made it clear that Upton House is a place where pupils are truly inspired to thrive and I’m thrilled to have joined such a dynamic and nurturing school.

Q What makes a good teacher?

A For me, what makes a good teacher is someone with sound subject knowledge, good classroom management skills and an ability

to impart knowledge in a way that children can understand. They are consistent in their approach and help children achieve their goals. However, a great teacher goes a little further. They inspire children to reach their full potential, creating an environment where children feel like it is OK to make mistakes in pursuit of answers. Great teachers not only promote critical thinking, but also encourage children to think independently, equipping them with the skills required by modern society. Their impact goes beyond the classroom and leaves a lasting impression on the children they teach.

Q What are you looking forward to?

A As the new school year gets underway, I am genuinely excited to have started my new role as Deputy Head Academics at this vibrant and forward-thinking school and have enjoyed a wonderful first few weeks – do come and visit, a warm Upton welcome awaits you. This role is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a community that values not only academic excellence, but the all-round development of its pupils. I’m particularly looking forward to getting to know the children, listening to their ideas, supporting their ambitions, and, with a bit of hard work, celebrating their successes.

RHIAN THORNTON WITH HER HEAD GIRL AND BOY AND THEIR DEPUTIES

Leading

the WAY

Jonathan Williams, Head at Heathfield School, Ascot, on his first year at the helm and what is to come

Q What would you say was the highlight of the last school year for you?

A There is strong competition between a number of Heathfield traditions and events, from incredible drama and musical productions to evening outdoor activities with boarders and, of course, the sta versus students lacrosse match – although since the students were victorious last year, that can’t quite top the list! Therefore, my number one highlight has to be the warm and positive response of the students and wider community to my being announced as the new Head, which meant a great deal to me as I prepared to lead the school in its next chapter.

Q As a new school year arrives, what are you looking forward to most?

A In a word, growth. I am excited to see the ways in which the students will grow in their knowledge and understanding, developing their passions both in and out of the classroom. As we build on our outstanding culture and community, establishing our core values and looking to the future, I look forward to seeing

a growth of character and ambition on an individual and schoolwide level.

Q Are there any changes or developments we can expect this year?

A Heathfield has exciting developments ahead: after more than 125 years as an all-girls’ school, we will welcome boys into the Sixth Form from September 2026. They will benefit from the outstanding and tailored provision in lessons and beyond, but also from our flagship programme that sits alongside their

A levels: the Heathfield Leadership Award. In addition, with increased emphasis on partnerships and innovation, the students will have a range of new initiatives in which to immerse themselves, that will grow and prepare them for the everchanging world they are living in.

Q What would you say will always resolutely remain the same at your school?

A One of Heathfield’s greatest attributes is its wonderful balance of being connected to the past, with its rich heritage and

unique traditions, whilst looking to the future. Although the school will certainly be evolving as we enter a new season and raise the bar ever higher, our core identity of ‘small school, BIG opportunities’ will always remain at the heart of Heathfield. We are passionate about being a community in which every child is known and cared for, where no student is ‘lost in a crowd’ with regards to their academic, pastoral or co-curricular growth.

Our students are proudly Heathfield for life, having made their mark (quite literally, as seen in the beautifully carved names of all our leavers in the pews in the Chapel) and we are determined for that to continue in the years to come.

heathfieldschool.net

GOING FAR

Wood School, on academic success and allowing pupils to stretch themselves

Q What would you say was the highlight of the last school year for you?

A The greatest highlight was, and always is, seeing our pupils achieve more than believe they are capable of. Of course, we had much to celebrate with our exam results, but equally powerful were the moments that showed who our young people are becoming. I think of our Year 2 pupils confidently sharing their heritage during International Week, or of our Senior School students trekking through Ecuador on a month-long expedition – embracing challenge, showing resilience, and working hand in hand with local communities. Those are the types of experiences and opportunities that both challenge and motivate our students, while ensuring their time at Akeley is memorable and full of fun!

Q As a new school year arrives, what are you looking forward to most?

A Each September feels like the start of an exciting new adventure, and I always look forward to supporting and watching our pupils step into the new opportunities ahead of them. This year, I’m especially excited to see our students continue to grow and achieve at every stage. It is a profound privilege to be Headteacher of Akeley Wood; guiding and inspiring the next generation as they discover their potential and shape their future. I’m looking forward to watching our sports teams develop their skills and courage, and to seeing our budding artists, musicians, and engineers continue to develop their skills and pursuits. We’ll also continue to adapt our curriculum to ensure it’s relevant to the world our students live in today.

“We believe childhood should be an adventure in itself”

Q Are there any changes or developments we can expect this year?

A Due to exceptionally high demand for places, we are embarking on a Nursery expansion project enabling more families who would like to experience an Akeley education, the opportunity to do so. We’re broadening our extra-curricular programme and continuing to develop our award-winning character education, which last year was recognised with the ACE Quality Mark for excellence. At AW6, our dedicated sixth form, the new Diploma Programme ensures that students graduate not only with outstanding academic outcomes, but also with the confidence, creativity and leadership skills they need to make their mark on the world.

Q What would you say will always resolutely remain the same at your school?

A What will never change is our deep commitment to nurturing each child as an individual. At Akeley, we want every pupil to discover their passions, grow in confidence, and achieve their personal best. But more than that, we believe childhood should be an adventure in itself – not simply preparation for the future. That sense of joy, curiosity and belonging will always be at the heart of Akeley Wood School.

akeleywoodschool.co.uk
VANESSA CONLAN

Q What would you say was the highlight of the last school year for you?

A It’s hard to choose just one, because the real highlight is seeing the breadth of opportunity our pupils enjoy. From the Senior School production of Sister Act, which won Best Ensemble at the National Schools Theatre Awards, to the success of our expanding sports programme, with 486 fixtures across 103 teams, there has been so much to celebrate. It has also been inspiring to see individual pupils achieve at the highest levels –nationally and internationally – in netball, cross country and athletics. Of course, academic achievement remains central, and I was proud to see our GCSE and A level students secure excellent results, opening the pathways of their choice. But above all, the true highlight is watching every child – from our youngest in Nursery to our Sixth Formers preparing for their next steps – thrive and discover who they are.

STEP NEXT

Ricki Smith, Principal of St Gabriel’s, Newbury, on an exciting year ahead

Q As a new school year arrives, what are you looking forward to the most?

A Even after nine years as Principal, I still feel a real sense of excitement at the start of each academic year. There is nothing quite like welcoming pupils back, or meeting those new to our community, and sensing the enormous potential that lies ahead. What I look forward to most is seeing that potential fulfilled – watching young people discover their strengths, challenge themselves, and become more self-assured. Every year brings fresh possibilities, whether in the classroom, on stage, in sport, or through the many co-curricular opportunities on o er.

Q Are there any changes we can expect this year?

A A key focus this year is blending the benefits of technology with the fundamentals of learning – helping young people to think critically, communicate e ectively, and adapt

with confidence, while staying grounded in the core values of education. We are also encouraging pupils to understand the unsettled world they are growing up in, and to see themselves as active participants in shaping a positive future. This ties closely to our ongoing commitment to sustainability, including the creation of a new School Garden, designed entirely from recycled materials.

Q What would you say will always resolutely remain the same at your school?

A At the heart of everything we do is balance: between academic challenge and wellbeing, tradition and innovation, ambition and kindness. Pupils will always find rich opportunities here and, just as importantly, they will find inspiration. We never lose sight of the fact that learning should be fun; when pupils are engaged, happy and confident, they flourish.

RICKI SMITH WITH YEAR 7 PUPILS

WORLD

of opportunities

Head of Caldicott School, JeremyBanks, on evolution and why this year promises to be an exciting one

Q What changes have you overseen since taking over as Head of Caldicott?

A In recent years our boarding model has become more flexible to take into account the individualised needs of each boy. While Caldicott will always have a strong boarding ethos, we simply removed the word ‘compulsory’ from our approach. An ambitious Sports Pavillion project is now underway, which will enhance our sporting provision as well as enable us to revolutionise other areas of our site.

Q Today, what do you believe makes your school stand out?

A In fast-changing times, Caldicott answers the evolving needs of its pupils without losing sight of the core strengths that give the school its dynamic spirit; where boys, at this important stage of their development, are nurtured to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. They should be eager to play their part in the community and to help address society’s collective challenges. They have the

values to guide them, the determination to persevere, and the capacity to lead but, crucially, they will also know how to apply those qualities in today’s world.

Q What are your boys prepared for when they leave Caldicott?

A Our boys are equipped with the skills to overcome life’s obstacles. This means, whilst getting great academic results, we aren’t training boys to pass the next exam, but rather we’re nurturing independent thinkers – with plenty of grit – who will triumph in all they do.

Q What are you looking forward to this new school year?

A Everything! What makes Caldicott such a special place to be a part of is the abundance of new opportunities. I can confidently say no day is the same, and it’s a privilege to see the boys throw themselves into all these opportunities so wholeheartedly.

Top Prep

St George’s School Windsor Castle has been included within the Tatler Schools Guide 2026, featuring in what is dubbed as the ‘definite source of information on the UK’s top prep and public schools’ for the seventh consecutive year.

The review concludes:

At the foot of Windsor Castle, the remodelled kindergarten here has gone down a treat; and it’s among its tastefully neutral hues that toddlers begin the International Baccalaureate Primary Years syllabus.

St George’s motto is ‘Real world ready’ and multiple foreign trips both broaden perspectives and foster a love of learning.

(Senior pupils can join an exchange programme with a school in Kenya.)

But there’s also plenty to do in Blighty: from scuba diving to street dance, there are more than 80 clubs; and the acclaimed choristers provide a beatific soundtrack in chapel. ‘My children run in every day and come out with the biggest smiles on their faces,’ says one parent. ‘What more could I ask for?’

Originally founded in 1348, the school is steeped in history and heritage, but very much is forward thinking too.

St George’s Ascot has once again featured in the newly released Tatler Schools Guide 2026, published alongside the October edition of the magazine. The guide states, ‘This school excels at hands-on education, offering individual attention to each pupil so they can reach their full potential....’. The Daily Mail’s Femail section covered the guide, selecting St George’s Ascot as one of just ten most impressive schools in Britain, and notably, the only girls’ school to make the list.

Head, Hannah Fox (pictured le ), commented: “It is a real accolade for St George’s to be celebrated by Tatler Magazine in their Schools Guide 2026. As the only girls’ school to have been selected by The Daily Mail for inclusion in their top ten schools featured from the Tatler guide, we are proud to be flying the flag for girls’ education. Sarah Mae Francis’ Enzo (£11,050) is a dynamic horse formed from car parts and sheet metal, complemented by The Knight (£14,625) (aka Mr Silver Stone), a powerful figure.

Holly Hickmore’s The Olympian (£70,000), cast in foundry bronze channels classical form with contemporary grace.

Michael Turner’s Gorilla in Stainless Steel (£45,000) stands as a commanding presence. Will Carr’s Fluidity (£19,900) evokes motion through minimalist form. Tom Hill impresses with two distinctive pieces: the dramatic Velociraptor (£35,000) and the refined automotive tribute, Ferrari GTO (£65,000).

The sculpture park is available to any guests staying, visiting or eating at Escapade Silverstone and will continue to evolve as pieces are sold and new pieces are added.
