MY FAVOURITE ROOM I still remember the room where I spent a lot of beautiful days. It was in a tall block of flats. That room had a big window and a big balcony in front. We could see the sea from there.

5

I talked long hours with my best friend there till late at night, and in that room my brothers and I played together. We had a lot of fun there during our childhood. There was a small sofa that was my grandmother's favourite. She liked to sit there for hours. We often watched TV there. In winter, we sometimes sat in front of the fire and listened to our favourite songs. My favourite things in the room were our TV and especially our stereo because I love to listen to music.

We also had lots of books on the bookshelves. I liked to collect shells, so I had plenty of them too. There were also beautiful paintings on the walls. DORA MURPHY Dora Murphy lives in Long Beach, which is far from the centre of Los Angeles, on the coast. She is thirteen years old. Victoria Smith asks the questions. Tell us about your family, Dora. There are four people in my family, including me. I have a brother who’s eleven years old and is in the 6th grade. My mother is a housewife and my father is a taxi driver. What is Long Beach like? It’s a really nice place to live. It’s got a beach and there are lots of things to do – amusement parks, theatres and shopping centres. When the weather is fine, I go to the beach with my friends. In winter I go skiing in the mountains. In Long Beach there is a lot of fresh air and open space and I like it. Could you describe Los Angeles to us? We visit the city often. It’s really very big. It has a lot of high buildings and there are lots of people, and Los Angeles is very dynamic, but I don’t like the pollution. You can never see any stars there, because the air is so polluted. There is also a lot of noise and violence. We can’t see any farms and people aren’t very friendly. Drugs are also a problem there. National School for Soccer Last year an interesting new school opened in Britain – the National School for Soccer in a place called Lilleshall in Shropshire. The boys live and train at the school and go to a nearby secondary school for their academic work. People who are against this idea give the following reasons: • Because they spend such a short time in school, they can’t really take full part in school life. • It’s a system which makes them special and different. • Only a few people have successful football careers. It’s more important to pass exams. Even successful footballers only have short careers. One of the first boys who was allowed to go to the National school was Jason Beckford, who is fourteen. He has already spent a year there. He and his brother Darren, who is seventeen, are two of Britain’s brightest hopes for football. Another schoolboy called Jason, this time Jason Dozzell found an easier route to professional football. Jason, who is seventeen now, had never played in a professional team until eighteen months ago when he received an exciting phone call from the manager of Ipswich. Four days later, he was out on the Ipswich pitch and he managed to score one of the three goals which beat Coventry. He left school soon afterward. He had been playing serious football since he was eleven and had always wanted to be a footballer. His sports teacher said, “ Jason is the best footballer of his age – he has strength, vision and skill”. Catch I A
