Motivational Speaker Kevin Bracy Helps Students Spread Kindness

The Homecoming queen and king have been crowned, the crowd was nervous to find out the winners, but not as nervous as the attendants waiting to hear if they would be crowned or not. Tanner Boatman and Shannon Alvarez were crowned king and queen.

Reach One Alliance founder and speaker, Kevin Bracey, came to speak to LHS students on September 15 about his vision to make a difference on campus. In December of last year, he went to other schools and gave anti-bullying assemblies. Bracey stated, “I don’t want to just come on a campus, do an all school assembly, have every one shout ‘Each One Reach One’, go to the parking lot, get in my car, go home, and say, ‘Oh, that was a great assembly.’ I want to do more.”

His goal is to affect the culture on the campuses at which he speaks. Connecting with the students, teachers, activity directors, the counselors, the vice principals and the principals is a way of creating a difference.

So he created a program called the Reach One Alliance and later on talked to Jay Berns, LHS Principal, and heard Berns say he wanted the Reach One Alliance on this campus. Bracey stated, “I got really excited, because I already have a connection with many students on this campus.”

In December and January, it was just an idea to him, but by February the alliance had their first high school and soon after

that, in March, another high school became involved. By the day of the assembly in September at LHS, there were 15 schools in Sacramento waiting to get the Reach One Alliance on their campuses. The alliance was spreading fast and was requested in Texas, Miami and Chicago, however, Bracey didn’t want that. He said, “I don’t want to go to all those places. I want to stay home and make a difference at home.” When Bracey started this alliance, it began as a student-led movement, so he made it clear at the assembly, as he stated, “So what I’m looking for, as I talk today, are students that connect with my message, they connect with me, who say ‘I want to be a part of this movement. I want to lead this movement on this campus.’”

LHS students, who signed up to be a part of this program, were able to spend half a day with Bracey and his teammate on the following Wednesday training on what the Reach One Alliance is all about and how to apply it and live it out on the campus every single day. Most people are more obsessed with their body appearance than they would like to admit. When people judge each other on what they look like, both boys and girls, begin to struggle with eating disorders and other problems. Body size has been a big topic in the United States lately; The U.S News website reported, “People who often make comments about their weight are more likely to have a poor body image and to suffer depression, according to a new study.” » continued, pg. 11

Varsity Football Pushing Forward

The Lincoln High School Varsity Football team played the Colfax Falcons in a game where the Zebras lost by a score of 35-14. The Zebras tied it 14 all halfway through the third but couldn’t hold on in the 4th quarter. Junior Running back, Eli Cunningham, had 95 yards rushing, a touchdown and caught two passes for 15 yards. Senior Running back, Dane Stimbert, also added a touchdown.

Cunningham stated on his game, “I played pretty good, I made a couple mistakes and dropped a couple balls, but overall I’m happy with my performance.”

When asked on how he can improve, Cunningham said, “I need to stay up longer and keep my feet while running. I also have to catch the ball before I run up-field.” Head Coach Chris Bean stated on the game, “We fought physical and our offensive and defensive line really stepped up, we just have to stop making big mistakes.”

The Zebras play at Center this Friday, at Foothill next Friday October 24, and home against Placer the week after on Halloween night.

Girls Volleyball Keep it Up By: Sam Carrillo, Co-Editor-in-Chief The Lincoln High School Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team is currently 1-3 in the league and LHS Junior Morgan Learned says that “every practice means improvement and now we have gotten closer to where we want to be and all we need is to keep at it to keep it up.”

One aspect the team has going for them, pointed out by Junior Lanea Shutt, is that “being on varsity just has a different feeling than on forsh or JV.” Shutt also made note of an interesting pre-game ritual that coaches Betty Zamora and Amanda Retallack have put in place and gives the girls “time individually to think” about how to put their best effort forward. “Before every game we have a tradition where the whole team stands together in a circle, away from the crowd, in silence while we are handed a quote. We read it in silence and then write our goals for that specific game on the back.”

The Lincoln High School JV Football team played the Colfax Falcons last Friday, October 10, in a game where the Zebras pounded the Falcons with the score being 35-7. Running back Anthony Anderson, had 97 yards rushing and a touchdown and had a 53 yard receiving touchdown to go along with it. Running back Ryan Graham, had 96 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The defense almost held the Falcons to zero, but, the Falcons managed a touchdown as time expired.

Lineman of the team, Wyatt Dornbush, stated on the teams play, “We played pretty well, we didn’t give up and we prevailed as the better team.” Head JV Coach, Wayne Paul, said about the teams play, “We played great and I couldn’t have asked for better.”

The team plays at Center this week and at Foothill next week. Good luck to JV and Go Zebras!

Zebra Girls Golf Wins League

Show Class, Have Pride, Display Character

The Lincoln High School Girls Golf team is undefeated at 11-0 in league, are PVL champions and have been on fire the entire season. Their closest match was a win by 5 strokes in the home match against Placer High School last Thursday at Turkey Creek Golf Course. Senior golfer, Kaitlyn Mckinney, is tied for first place overall in league.

The teams overall lowest 9-hole score was in the 240’s and their highest was in the 260’s.

When asked about how the team has performed so far this season, Head Coach, David Hicks said, “It has been consistent and we haven’t had too many bad rounds so far.” He also stated, “To finish off the season on a strong note, we will need a desire to get better and we need to continue playing well.” When asked about her play on the season so far, Senior golfer, Kaitlyn Mckinney stated, “I’m pretty happy, and it has been fairly consistent.” She also said about how the team needs to end the season, “We need to focus, when we have a few bad holes we need to put it in the back of our minds and just play golf.” Sophomore Golfer, Katie Sterling stated, “The golf team this year is doing really well. Their top six runners on Varsity Boys have been: Sophomore Tommy Paulson, Freshman Jared Palmyra, Freshman Preston Summerhays, Junior Aaron Jackson, Sophomore Michael Gage and Senior Anthony Jossis. The Lincoln High School boys’ varsity soccer team is tied for first in the league with stats of 2 wins, 0 losses, 2 ties and a goal to go all the way.

Christian Guzman, LHS Senior, says that the secret to their success is that the boys “picked each other up and started playing as one team instead of playing as individuals.” The team’s overall stats are 4 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties; which leads Guzman to believe that even though himself and his teammates started off slow, “sometimes in life you’re going to start slow” and they now have every capability to achieve their league win.

Coach George Bonilla’s words of advice for his team in winning and in life are to, “Show class, have pride, display character.

If you do, winning takes care of itself.”

At the Stockton meet, the JV Boys got first as a team and the JV Girls took second.

The coach of the team this year is Courtney Amalong, a science teacher from Twelve Bridges Middle School. When asked how she thinks the team has performed so far this season, Amalong stated, “I think that we have done amazing, we have really stepped it up and improved.”

She also said how the team can improve, “We need to continue working on hill work and have longer practices so we can keep improving.” Junior runner, Brian Ackerson, said how his season has been so far, “I’ve done pretty good, I’ve been improving on times each race and hope to keep it up.”

The team has league meets at Bear River High School next Wednesday October 22, and at home on October 29, then the

team goes to Angels Camp for Subsections on November 8. Good luck to cross country and Go Zebras!

The importance of Cheer to LHS Cheerleaders By: Brittany Miller, Katrina Hagge, reporters Cheerleading routines usually range anywhere from one to three minutes and can contain many difficult and precise components of tumbling, dancing, jumping, cheering and stunting, in order to direct spectators of events to cheer for sports teams at games or to participate in cheerleading competitions. Being a cheerleader means something different to the student athletes at Lincoln High school. Elizabeth Landry (’16) said, “Being a cheerleader to me means being a leader for your school, and not only being a leader at your school but in your community too.”

Shannon Alvarez (’15) says that ‘To be a cheerleader to me means that you help bring spirit to the school and you include everyone and you promote the events and sports at school and we

only gain friendships and get to be a part of a team, but you also get to be a leader.”

Origin of Zebra Mascot How Did we Become the Fighting Zebras?

by: Maria Von Harringa, Reporter One of the very first games at Lincoln High was in 1927. The new principal, at the time, was also the coach and he attended Cal Berkeley, while the principal prior to him attended Stanford. As most people know, these two schools clash. The new coach wanted to change

the formerly red and white uniforms to blue and gold.

He ordered those, but meanwhile borrowed from the city team; striped, blue and white uniforms. When the team played the opponents out of town, they allegedly stated “Lincoln looks like a bunch of zebras”. The name

stuck and that is how Lincoln High School officially became “The Zebras”.

Shortly after, a wooden mascot was created, which the school nicknamed “Abe” and took to all the games. In the 60’s, the coach wanted to change our uniforms, being new to the school and desiring a mascot that was fiercer. Not long after that, Richard Wyatt, president o f the

booster club, designed the original Fighting Zebra that we see today in the Lee gym.

Although, there are many other zebra mascots, we remain the only “Fighting Zebras”.

Get to Know the Clubs on the Lincoln High Campus by: Tiffany Zubia, Reporter

High school clubs bring a variety of different people together to form a working unit. On the Lincoln High School campus new clubs form every year and continue to grow in size. A few clubs you will find on the LHS campus are GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), Nami, Urban, Avid, TSA (Technology Student Assoc.), Drama, Dance, Physics, Cyber Patriot, FCA (Federation of Christian Athletes), Each One Reach One and many more. There’s a club out there for everyone, they just have to go out and find it.

One of the most recent clubs on the LHS campus is Nami. It stands for National Alliance Mental Illness. “It’s a club for students to raise mental health awareness and reduce the stigma of communicating and helping one another for mental health,” said Lincoln High School counselor Patricia Lee. It is still a work in progress but they hope to find some strong kids to be leaders in the club. There will be a seminar held in October to train students on the subject of helping their fellow peers. If you have an interest in helping your fellow students and listening to problems they

would like to share, then this club is for you.

Another “up and coming” club is Dance Club. “I want to be able to perform at the rallies, assemblies, and half time shows. I want to be able to have outside choreographers come in and teach a master class,” said Izabelle Reid, President of Dance Club. There wasn’t a club dedicated to dance and for people who would like to have a career in dance so she decided to start the club. Reid’s number one goal is to get dance more noticed so in the future they will have the funding to do future projects. Currently, she is brainstorming ideas to get funding for the club.

Interact-Key Club has grown tremendously since it started. It is a division of Rotary International and Kiwanis service organizations. Alexa Rozell (’14), project manager, named a few things you would get to do in Interact-Key club, “We work with the volunteer service clubs and we go around the community and we do service and help out people. We do Relay For Life where we set up the luminarias around the track and we go to this place called the Cunatus Family house and we do yard work there and we help the people there.”

It looks good on a college resume and you get to better the community.

If any of these clubs peak your interest, head on over to your Activity Center ,Mary MacQueen’s room, leadership instructor. Joining a club is a huge part of a school career, don’t pass up the fun.

Apple is best-known for their high-quality electronics. The company was founded in Cupertino, California in1976. Their hardware products include Mac computers, iPod media players, iPhone smartphones, and the iPad tablet computers. Most recently, on September 19, Apple developed the iPhone 6 with IOS 8. With the way teens are attached to their phones, iPhone 6 is a highly desirable item, but not all of the reviews are glowing.

Apple says the new IOS 8 feature is “The biggest IOS release ever”. The New iPhone is not only bigger, but it also has new capabilities and functions used to do a variety of things. New functions range from communication with Siri to new ways to send messages with awesome keyboard options. Apple’s new iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch screen with HD Retina Display showing the perfections of the pictures taken by its 8 megapixel resolution(the same as the 5S) but it uses a brighter f/2.2 aperture light and an all-new sensor with even larger pixels that lets in 81 percent more light than the previously released iPhones. They also produced the iPhone 6 Plus which is basically the same thing, but has a 5.5” screen instead.

The “Bending iPhone” 6 Plus is being reviewed as an issue, just days after its release.

The only actual report of it bending is when it’s being stored inside a pocket while sitting for a while. Tyler Fleming (‘18) says that the iPhone 6 plus bends, but the iPhone 6 does not. When asked what he liked about the iPhone 6, he replied “I like it because it is faster than most people think and the fingerprint feature it way more accurate.”

Football Players A Day in the Life of a Football Player by: Brenna Snyder, Reporter

As most people would expect, the job of

being an athlete takes a lot of hard work and dedication. For a football player, it involves off-season training, after school practices, staying healthy and also balancing their schoolwork all at the same time.

Of course, there are the scheduled football practices that are they are required to attend and participate in, but some players go the extra mile with additional exercise that they fit into their free time. Varsity football player, Andy Boehm (’15) says he “likes to run and lift weights to be in shape for the games.” The main goal of practicing and working hard is to get better performance at games. Jackson Tofft (’17), Junior Varsity player, believes, “The universal goal of any athlete is to improve and I definitely feel like I’ve improved as a football player since freshman year.” Suleiman Saleh (’17), Junior Varsity player, stated, “I play receiver and that’s offense but I’m really into playing defensive back so I want to improve on learning coverages.”

When not playing and focusing on football, Tofft said that he enjoys, “Playing guitar, riding my vintage Bianchi road bike, spending time with friends and being outdoors. I also spend a lot of time

studying and doing homework.” Fitting in the time to do schoolwork and maintaining the required GPA may seem hard but Tofft says “There’s really not much to it. I just have to set aside time for homework and make sure that I get everything done that I need to get done. Sometimes that just means staying up late and giving up some sleep, but that’s the sacrifice of being a student athlete.” Dylan Munch (’16), Varsity player, says that he usually “Gets home, does homework, eats dinner with only a half hour of free time left before bed.” The dedication & sacrifice these players make are evident by their actions, which show us how they manage to get it done and play in the games. This is due to them making sure their responsibilities are taken care of while working hard.

By: Inderdeep Singh, Reporter Lincoln High School has a wide array of very interesting teachers who all want to see their students succeed. Lincoln High School teacher Tim Allen is one such teacher who has gone above and beyond in ensuring student success and he has even won awards for his accomplishments.

In his free time, Mr. Allen states, “I enjoy spending free time with my athletic one and a half year old son, who also like puzzles and reading.” Aside from his son he said, “I like to read books, jog, occasionally play tennis and I am a big fan of relaxation.”

Mr. Allen won the Teacher of the Month award from News 10, which he won in June of 2013. He earned this award by being nominated by a student for his excellent teaching. Allen teaches Chemistry, Honors

Welcoming new teachers to Lincoln Hich School

LHS Principal Jay Berns was asked how he felt about Mr. Allen as a teacher. He said, “Mr. Allen is a great guy and he’s amazing.

He has insane energy and is a genius; he’s literally the mad scientist. I think when he goes home he does experiments and has probably blown up his kitchen once or twice.”

Allen’s high school experience was an “interesting one”, as he absolutely hated his freshman year because he went to a high school where none of his friends went and he didn’t know anyone. As many of us can relate, this was a difficult time for Allen but he says, “It all turned around sophomore year when I opened up and found new friends and started having more fun.

Everything got better for me. I stopped getting B’s and started getting A’s and I was overall happier. I learned a lot and I never went back.” When asked if he played any sports, Allen said, “I played tennis in high school and I’ve coached seven years of tennis but I stopped after my son was born and I coached four girls golf teams but I’m not coaching anymore.”

Last but not least, Allen gives some words of wisdom to heed on a high school journey.

He said, “Number one, don’t worry what other people think about you. Two- it’s ok to be yourself. Three- studying is good for you. Four- go to college; and lastly number five- no matter what; you should always try your best.” And with these inspirational quotes the interview was concluded.

Lincoln High School is welcoming many new students and teachers to the 2014 school year. The new teachers being Chris Bean (English & Football Coach), Jennifer Villanueva (Spanish), Shane Dixon (Chemistry), Patricia Lee (Counseling), and Maggie Roesser (Drama). Being a new student may have its challenges, but can you imagine being a new teacher? They have over two hundred students to deal with, have to be in a FFA students Todd Scott (‘15) new school with new co-workers and all new surroundings. Lincoln has five new teachers on campus this year. One of the new faculty members this year is Patricia Lee, a counselor at LHS. Lee came to LHS from Antelope High school as a collage/career tech. When asked how she likes LHS so far she said, ”I am enjoying it. The students here are very nice. It’s a really sweet group of kids.” Lee told reporters that the school she came from was a lot rougher and here the students really care about their education.

Lee also stated “My least favorite student is a student that doesn’t attend school on a regular basis, because what can I do to help them?” Lee expresses that she wants to help kids “to reach farther than what they’re reaching right now” She also wants kids to “reach beyond” the minimum.

LHS is also welcoming Maggie Roesser, or ‘Maggie May” as she prefers to be called, to our staff. Roesser is temporarily teaching at LHS as the drama teacher, while Mrs. Duarte is on maternity leave. She has a lot of expectations for drama classes while she is here. When Roesser was describing her experience at LHS so far, she said,”I love it, it’s a great school with great school spirit and the kids are awesome.”

Roesser has been in productions in London and studied acting in London for a few years.

Currently she is back visiting her family and teaching her drama classes real experiences in acting. Roesser also said, “All the teachers haven’t introduced themselves to me yet, so they should stop by and say hi in the theater!” Both Lee and Roesser love LHS so far.

Another teacher new to LHS this year is Shane Dixon. Dixon is a science teacher on campus. Dixon taught at Granite Bay for 16 years and at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino prior to that. When asked how he liked LHS so far he said, “I really like LHS. The people are friendly and there are a lot of great things happening at the school for students.”

Dixon has described some highlights since being at LHS so far.

“Riding into school every day with my son who is at GEMs is a definite highlight for me. I also enjoyed taking my kids to the football game and seeing how much support the community has for LHS.” When asked how LHS differs from previous schools Dixon said,”I have been blessed to work in great schools with great staff and students. That is what is important and that is not different here at LHS. The biggest difference is the lack of parking issues.” Dixon also said,”I think LHS has a good balance in focus between academics and extracurriculars. It is good to be a Zebra.”

FFA Competition Season By: Sonia Del Toro, Campus News Editor With competition season creeping up on the Future Farmers of America here at Lincoln High School, the members begin to prepare themselves for what seems like the most nerve racking moment in their lives.

The Sierra Buttes Sectional Opening/Closing Ceremonies competition is being held on Tuesday, November 18th and will take place at Placer High School in Auburn. This competition focuses on an officer teams’ ability to publicly perform the National FFA’s Opening and Closing ceremonies, in front of 3 judges.

Each team will be judged on things such as; their pronunciation, tone of voice, posture, profession and more.

Todd Scott (‘15) says, “This is my fourth year competing in this competition. It has helped me with my public speaking skills and also my annunciation during my chapter and sectional meetings and competitions.” Scott continues, “I would highly recommend all of our chapter members to get involved in the Opening/Closing Ceremonies.”

As for a first timer, Conner Lane (‘17) he had this to say, “This is my first time competing in these ceremonies and I look forward to learning how to become a better public speaker and also learning the Opening/Closing ceremonies because I would like to be an officer next year and I think that would be beneficial.” Lane adds, “I am very excited, I can’t wait!”

Homecoming Continued from page 1

By Hollie Lawler, Reporter The overall theme was “Through the decades” and the student body was encouraged to dress up. Monday was 20’s, Tuesday was 50’s, Wednesday was Junior/Senior day for powder puff, Thursday was 70’s, and Friday was 80’s.

The Homecoming game on Friday, October 10, Lincoln played Colfax where the final score was 35-14 The first half of the game was a lot of fun and a close game and the second half everyone in the crowd cheered on the team even though you could feel the tension in the air. The Parade took place on the track between the Varsity and JV games on Friday, Juniors were picked as the best. The Powder puff game was on Wednesday, October 8 at 6p.m and the Seniors won the game. The final score was 14-12. It was a close game and the Juniors had a chance to tie in the final seconds but could not convert.

The homecoming dance was on Saturday from 8:00-10:30pm. The dance had lots of colorful lights, confetti was raining down and music was upbeat and easy to dance to. LHS Teacher, Mary Macqueen stated “My favorite part is the excitement of seeing the girls all dressed up for the dance.” Natalie Gonzalez (18’) said she was looking forward the most to “dancing with friends and stuff like that.” After the dance Gonzalez said, “The dance met my expectations, the DJ and music was great.”

Destiny, Bungie’s Failed Flight

Food Review

Destiny, the latest video game which was produced by trusted game developers, Bungie, was without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated games of the entire year; with many different gamers having very high expectations of the game. The creators of the game wanted to mix two traditional game types: first person shooters and role playing games, attempting to make their own style out of the combination.

Destiny was released on Sept 3, 2014, and the initial reviews averaged six or seven out of ten, which was very surprising considering all that was promised by Bungie. The only problem that we personally have with the initial reviews is that the reviewers had to “binge” the game in order to review it in time. They believed that the game was too repetitive. We have a problem with that. If anything is “binged”, one will eventually

understandable considering it comes out on both generations.

The customization of your character is very much lacking and also gives the feel of being rushed. Later on in the game the weapons and armor you collect are too few in selection considering this is supposed to have “role playing” game elements, which is extremely disappointing considering Bungie’s weapon selection in their past Halo games.

The story of Destiny, which seems hidden, is actually pretty good if you want to pay attention. It is, however, a cookie cutter copy of a basic fantasy plot, “a great darkness is returning to the land and it’s up to the hero to save the day.” It has been done before and done better, but there are hints to further story in the game, that will be released on downloadable content, which we will most likely have to pay for.

The music is amazing , however, and we feel like the music is one of the best parts of the game.

Now with all of these bad qualities, it’s a wonder why anybody would play the game let alone rate it a six or seven out of ten.

Strangely enough, Destiny plays off its bad qualities with the gameplay, and although the game will feel repetitive at some point,

Thoughts on Iron Grill Korean BBQ

On September 28, I had a chance to go to the restaurant Iron Grill Korean BBQ located in Roseville. Surprisingly, this restaurant is not well known. This place was recommended to me and I’m glad I gave it a shot. They had a decent amount of items to choose from, including Bibimbap (mixed rice bowl), Soondooboo (soft tofu stew) and teriyaki bento boxes. I ordered the Bibimbap with bulgogi (korean spiced beef ) for the meat. Overall it was delicious.

The meat was seasoned just right and was in perfect balance with the vegetables and rice.

Korean food is very different from American food. Korean food tends to use more spice and has a spicy flavor. Whitney High School Student, Anthony Leonti (‘16) said, “The food had a specific taste because of how they prepared their main courses and side dishes, fermenting most of the vegetables and the sauces that they used definitely made it stand out.” Leonti ordered the honey chicken bento box and from what I tasted it was flavorful as well.

The price of the food was reasonable, for the price you pay the amount of food was accurate. They are a little less expensive than the average restaurant. According to the website http://www.irongrill-koreanbbq.com/, the owners say, “We intend to serve you the kind of food we served to our families back in Seoul, Korea. We will constantly seek improvement in service, ingredients and ambience. And, last but not least, our ultimate goal is to be able to give a portion of our profits to the less fortunate; specifically, the children in third world countries who are hungry, sick, and unable to help themselves.” As for my experience, I would say that overall the food was amazing and I will definitely be returning.

Although the food was great, there were a few setbacks. Iron Grill Korean BBQ is not for people who don’t like a noisy atmosphere. With all the grills, it created a loud background noise. The only setback besides the noise level, according to Leonti, was, “There wasn’t any more food”. The Iron Grill Korean BBQ was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

find a pattern. Only after playing the game for a long period can a person truly give it a review. What we can say is that the sixes and sevens are too high of ratings for the game to have earned.

Destiny was supposed to contain an entire universe of explorable terrain, but instead, gamers were given blocked off and linear areas that players were forced to grind over and over. The game honestly just feels rushed and that is unforgivable considering how this project was under way for more than five years. The graphics on the consoles are past-generation looking and not at all at what the new generation players were expecting. This is somewhat

On Wednesdays, they have to be aware of the issues of bullying to help people out, who are in that situation. On Thursdays, they go eat with someone they don’t know. Lastly, on Fridays, they’re supposed to make healthy choices and help support someone quit a really horrible habit. Miller said, “It makes me more aware of what is going around.” She continued, “I didn’t know as much bullying as there was, until I went to the first meeting that was on a Wednesday during class and I actually got to hear some of the stories that people were talking about. I never knew there was that much and just over small little things too.” The Reach One Alliance meets every Friday at the beginning of lunch in front of the band room in the quad.

Destiny’s greatest selling point is the multiplayer, it seems that the developers truly tried to make it fun and were successful; you can easily lose hours in the multiplayer.

Do we regret paying full price for Destiny? Yes. Is Destiny a fun game? Yes. But if you haven’t bought Destiny yet, we would recommend you wait for a price drop.

We hope Bungie takes the high road and doesn’t release expensive downloadable content, we doubt they would. We give destiny a five out of ten. It was a huge disappointment, but at least it was an enjoyable one. If you find it on sale, you should definitely pick it up

This year’s fall play will be “Noises Off”, a comedy about producing a play. Noises Off will be directed by Maggie May, the Fall Semester substitute for Ms. Duarte. Ms. May received her Masters Degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London specializing in Musical Theater. She is a professional (equity) actress who has appeared onstage with Michael Crawford and Whoopi Goldberg among others. She has appeared locally at several theaters, including the Sacramento Theater Company and the Sacramento Music Circus. Noises Off will be performed on December 5, 6, 12, 13 at 7pm, and Dec. 6, 13 at 2 pm.

Life after high school seems fairly boring if you aren’t headed straight for college.

Seniors all over are just now getting jobs and trying to take charge of their lives before getting out of high school into the real world. What they don’t know is the harsh reality that is the world. Directly after high school is the time to try for college, you wait any longer and it starts to get tougher and tougher to get accepted, even to a junior college.

The time is coming to step up and take charge of life, to really find out what it means to be a responsible adult. The first step in doing is an education. Taking those long four years to get even a basic degree is completely worth it in the end, and “college isn’t a walk in the park, it’s the first time that you’ll actually be given some hardcore school work” said Jamie Weyland, Sierra College student and LHS alumna.

It may be stressful going through another four to eight years of schooling, but in the end it will be completely worthwhile.

Colleges all around are looking for dedicated students to fill their rosters, the only bad part about this is that around Lincoln

High, “senioritis” is hitting hard, especially in recent years. If our school is losing reputation points in the college community, it will be even harder to get into any nearby college graduating from Lincoln.

Using senior year to each person’s advantage may be the only time to step back up in the eyes of the college communities.

College life is going to be hard, it’s going to be a hassle and each of us that attend will be put under an immense amount of pressure, however, asking any source in the world that has attended college, the answer will be the same. It is worth it. Take the time and jump right in from the get-go, otherwise the regrets will be more abundant than the goals.

Concert Reviews Concerts in California

By: Dean Williams, Reporter In the past year that I’ve been in California, I have witnessed some legendary bands pass through. Taking the time and money to go out and see these bands has contributed to even more of an all-around great life experience. Modest Mouse was the most recent band to touch California, playing in San Francisco this past September. Another amazing band that will be passing through Wheatland shortly is the Black Keys this November.

Along with being one of the greatest states around, California is so blessed to Drama Club Participates in Local Event have the opportunity to host so many bands that dream of playing here. In fact, By: Lee Basham, Volunteer Technical Director, LHS Drama Department Journey and Steve Miller Band just finished playing here this summer right up in Lincoln’s backyard at the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Yuba City. More Work, Less Sleep AP and Honors Students Signing Up For Less Sleep By: Kylie Smith, Reporter

Sleep is a wonderful thing, but for AP and Honors students, it is something that they don’t get as much of compared to normal high school students. The work load for AP, honors and regular students can directly related to the amount of sleep that they are getting each night. The more work they receive, the less sleep they get.

For an AP student, the responsibility, work load and drive to work are on a whole different level from a regular class. However, taking an AP or an honors class is optional. AP, meaning advanced placement, is a college level class that helps you develop important skills needed to be successful in college. Because it is a college level course, there is college level work and homework that comes with the class. Rea Vadgama (‘17) is in AP World History this year and stated, “I spend about four to six hours doing homework for my AP class each week.” For her AP homework, Emily Owen (‘17) says, “I spend around three hours per assignment.” Many students play sports, are in band, or have other activities after school, so time management becomes essential in order to fit homework and everything else into their busy schedules. Vadgama said, “I go to bed around 11:00 p.m. every night.” Many AP and honors students go to bed late each night, so sleep becomes a very valuable thing when they are constantly deprived of it.

Honors students are in a similar situation as AP students. The amount of work and level of thinking for an honors student is increased from the regular classes. Honors classes cover the same topics as the regular classes, but the honors class goes more in depth. There is a large load of honors homework, so it usually keeps students up later. Many teenagers go to bed late anyway, but for AP and honors students, they aren’t always staying up for fun.

AP World History teacher, Jeff Duer, says, “Yes!!! I do give out more homework to my AP students than my regular classes because without it, you wouldn’t be able to get ready for the AP test.”

Duer added, “But, nobody is required to take the class.” Tests, or studying for them, are another thing that will keep students up. Comparing his AP tests and his regular tests, Duer said, “They are night and day. There is about 90% more studying for the AP tests.” More time is required with more studying and more time spent studying may equal less sleep. Duer said, “I want to treat my AP students like college students and not spoon feed information to them, but for some, it is a wakeup call.” AP and honors students may get less sleep than other students because of the amount of work that comes with their AP and honors classes, but they are voluntarily signing up for the work loads and less sleep.

One of the reasons why students sign up to take an AP or an honors class is for the grade bump. Patricia Lee, a counselor at LHS, says “the classes get a full grade bump if their grade is A-C. Then the grade is factored into their GPA.” Taking an AP or and honors class, as long as you pass the class, boosts your grade, which helps improve your overall GPA.

PSAT What is it and Why is it Important?

By: Megan Rebentisch, Reporter If going to the college of your dreams is a must, then the PSAT’s are for you. PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Taken by approximately 3.6 million high school students every year, the PSAT is a national multiple-choice test that colleges use to prepare students for the SAT. The PSAT will be based on three main study skills: Critical Reading, Math and Writing. The test will consist of Critical Reading having two 25-minute sections, two 25-minute sections for Math and one 30-minute section for Writing.

The PSAT will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 7:45 in the morning. If students miss the deadline they can still practice for the SAT by taking PSAT and SAT practice tests online or they can enroll in an SAT prep program. Students need to make sure to check in with the office the week beforehand to see which classroom they will be testing in. There’s a $25 fee and there’s only a limited amount of tests and space left, so get yours while you can. After paying the test fee, students are given a student guide and should make sure to study the guide to help prepare

College Night Start Thinking About Life after High School By: Sam Carrillo, Reporter Have you thought about where you want to attend college, what future is right for you, or the help that is out there for these goals? Well, on October 9 there was an event held at Del Oro High School that offered answers to these questions and more.

Every year College Night is hosted by different high schools in the area and welcomes students and parents to meet college representatives and learn from speakers about specific areas of information dealing with financial aid,

them for the test. Students want to do well as it may be their ticket into a good college.

To prepare students for the SAT, students are recommended to take the test at least by their junior year. In fact, colleges give scholarships to students who do well on the test. Students can qualify for a scholarship from a college if they meet the required score of the PSAT but must be a junior at the least. Though only juniors can receive scholarships, younger students should still consider taking the PSAT to get early feedback on their academic skills to see if they are well prepared enough for the real SAT test.

Connie Brown, LHS Counseling Secretary, reviewed the benefits students gain by taking the PSAT. “Students get an idea of what score they would have received if they took the real SAT.” Brown continued, “It also gives students an insight on what the SAT test is going to look like.” Overall, taking the PSAT can be profitable to students by helping them practice their study skills.

LHS Student, Diana York (‘16), took the PSAT last year, and will be taking the test again this year. “The PSAT is really great practice and I believe it has helped prepare me to take the real SAT,” York explained, “It’s what colleges use and I really want to get into a good college.”

Meetings for the above stated were held in the Del Oro Library and Theater from 6:45-7:45 p.m. Spokespersons from Sierra College, William Jessup, University of Sacramento, and UC Davis were even present to shed light on any questions and share their personal knowledge on college affairs and

their represented schools.

Del Oro’s two gymnasiums were home for the night to booths with pamphlets, papers and the spoken word from representatives and alumni of out-of-state colleges in one and in-state colleges in the other.

Walking into either area, one is immediately submersed in opportunities to gather information from any branch of the military, trade schools, familiar names of colleges or places you would have never discovered on your own; a student might be given the chance to talk with the university that is the perfect fit for their future.

College night continues to benefit students of all grades, parents and the colleges that

come out for the evening to share the spirit of their school; whether you have everything planned out or are just getting started with the process of looking past high school, the night will spark enthusiasm for further education.

Voices within Schoology LHS on the Web By: Donaven Vandeveer, Reporter With the new school year comes a new set of changes, and one of the biggest is the beginning of the transition to Schoology, a learning management system. This change has been met with mixed reactions from both students and staff, while some are all for it, there a still teachers and students who prefer Aeries, a gradebook program.

Schoology is the new program, which is going to be used school-wide in an attempt to help increase communication between students, parents and teachers. The site allows teachers to post everything from: homework assignments, calendar events and automatically graded tests to links for helpful videos. LHS Chemistry Teacher Tim Allen has put many of his class’s supplies on schoology stating, “I like Schoology to communicate with students and parents [as its] easy to understand, because it’s similar to Facebook.” The communication is definitely one of the major highlights for the school, as the easy information distribution keeps everyone in the loop.

As LHS Vice Principal Mike Maul said “The potential that it has is way more than any other communication system that we’ve had.”

Using this system, parents will be able to stay more up to date in their child’s schooling and are able to see what supplies their student needs and what homework they have to do.

Both Aeries and Schoology offer the ability for teachers to post their student grades, but Schoology’s assortment of added information and statistics may make it the optimal choice. As Debbie Tofft, one of the four system administrators said “Education is moving more and more in that direction, using technology.” However, the new system is not without its problems. Many students are unable to log in to schoology and even students with this ability do not check it as often as they sometimes should. Many students and teachers are somewhat skeptical of the system, and the change from Aeries leaves many slightly confused, as they do not know when they are supposed to be checking the site or what they should be posting on it.

Schoology does provide an app, which allows students, once they have logged in, to receive immediate phone notifications whenever a teacher posts a new homework assignment, when a test date is nearing or whenever a faculty member posts an update or new resource. LHS English Teacher Kendra Christiansen frequently uses Schoology a method of allowing absent students to catch up stating “I can post all my PowerPoints and weekly agendas” and that it allows for “easy access for students to get coursework when they’re out of class.” Not only is this useful for students who are in class, but as Kevin Cardenas (‘17) put it, “It actually helps students that miss school [as] they can just check Schoology.” Students may set their own notifications as well, making the system an apt way to combat forgetfulness.

Despite the large changes, with all the new features that Schoology offers, it may prove to be the far better system. LHS expects more teachers to quickly begin to adapt to the new system and Maul has stated that one of the main reasons that many teachers have not switched from Aeries is that, “This is not the normal yet for Lincoln High School, it’s still the learning curve,”

and that teachers stick with Aeries because “it’s what they know.” Students will be able to check both their homework, and their grades from their phones, while teachers will be able to send notifications about the class agenda or upcoming assignments. As Tofft said, “Technology is transforming education and schoology is just one step in that journey.”

Body Image continued from page 1 By: Brittany Miller, Reporter The struggle is happening everywhere, even on the Lincoln High campus. Some students and faculty shared their experiences with body image. Mikel MacDonald (‘17) shared, “I have been picked on about my weight ever since first grade, because people would rather take their insecurities out on others, instead of themselves.”

Just like students, faculty members have also been bullied about their body image.

Kathy Olmstead, one of Lincoln High School Special Education Teachers, said, “You need to first off realize who you want to be, because if you want to change, you just need to learn how to do it.” MacDonald stated, “If something bothers you, then do something about it and if it doesn’t bother you, good for you.”

WPUSD Mental Health Specialist, Liz Wilson, said, “I recently read an article that stated that 97% of women have at least one ‘I hate my body’ moment throughout the course of their day, with the average being 13 negative thoughts about their body throughout their day.” Wilson said that unfortunately, she doesn’t believe this will be a shocking statistic for most females.

She added, “Extreme focus on the things we do not like about our bodies can result in not only a distorted image of our bodies but a distorted image of our individual worth.”

Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes. Accepting others plays a huge roll on someone’s personal body image. When you don’t accept others, because of their size, they start to think that nobody likes them and that they are either to fat and not skinny enough. Brittany Torbik (’16) said, “Sometimes it’s a little difficult at accepting others, but I am very understanding of other people’s differences.”

One of the ways body image can be a problem for teens is Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This is a condition where people focus on an imagined physical defect or a minor defect that others cannot even notice or see.

As a result of this fixation, people see themselves as “ugly” or not good enough. Vincent Hurtado, LHS school psychologist, stated, “The most important advice I could give someone struggling with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is to get individual counseling from a professional.”

According to Cheri K. Erdman on goodreaders.com, “Even the models we see in magazines wish they could look like their own images.” Now that this generation is changing things with its technology, Photoshop makes it so that the models don’t have to be as skinny. So don’t just look at a magazine and say, “I wish I could look like her,” it really just brings down your self-esteem.

You don’t need to look skinny in order to be beautiful; beauty is on the inside.” Wilson added, “There is no such thing as ‘the ideal body’…we need to find ways to be grateful for the body that we have…it’s the only one we’ve got!”

Reliance on the Internet Searching for an Answer to an Answer Just Leads to Another Question By: Sam Carrillo, Co-Editor-in-Chief There was a time when any question a person had, whether it be medical, governmental, societal, scientific, or of any other nature, was answered by the professionals.

The population was satisfied with the information that people trained in the specific field were able to give out and listened to their advice with an honored ear. Nowadays, however, someone is more likely to take a diagnosis into their own hands, rather than follow – and pay for – the guidance of a doctor, pharmacist, psychiatrist, scientist, lawyer, historian, even a teacher, or, heaven forbid, a politician. If the populous can better find answers on their own, on the internet; then why are we paying people to go school and to go to work every day with the knowledge to assist the public?

The problem really lies in that people have become far too comfortable with themselves and the information they can discover or provide. It is now believed that one has “rights” to know everything another person knows and that they can, somehow, benefit from simply obtaining the answers; when, in reality, the answers could very well be false and, congratulations, you still have no idea what to do with what you’ve learned.

The need for information is no longer educational, but it is greedy. Television can, partly, be thanked for this greed because opinions from every angle are now broadcasted in the form of entertainment. Remember when television and the newspaper were our only sources of news? Well, now the nightly news takes so many different angles that there is, practically, too much information available to the public ear and eye. The internet, whether it comes from your computer or your phone, is home to an over-abundance of information that just leads from an answer to another question.

The different forms and amount of data out there can confuse people and lead them to believe that can find out or know more on their own.

Self-reliance is a bigger problem than people realize or want to admit. Independence and questioning are great qualities of living in America; however, people then begin to see their opinion as superior or fact when there is so much to contradict what a “professional” has to say. We cannot all, possibly, know everything that the person next to us does; but, thanks goodness, we don’t need to. There are representatives in fields or areas that are specifically present to inform us in, only, what is necessary to answer our questions. The population can do all of us a favor by not self-destructing with over-use of the internet and not siding with opinion over fact.
