‫الرتحيب‬ ‫‪F O R E W O R D,‬‬ ‫‪ON ROOTS AND MEANINGFULNESS,‬‬ ‫‪After the boom of easily obtainable materials and‬‬ ‫‪technologies, comes a time where the respect for origins of the‬‬ ‫‪context and the sensibility come back to their plain and simple‬‬ ‫‪expression, in a natural minimalism.‬‬ ‫‪Our initiative and acts have to be supported with more sense‬‬ ‫‪and poetry, in order to ensure their legitimacy towards future‬‬ ‫‪generations.‬‬

‫الفكرة‬ C O N C E P T, THE MYTHS THAT FOUND A CITY, Madina, ‘the’ city, which in the language defines all the other cities, deserves a museum that will base its foundation in the historic and mythic depth where it’s rooted.

HOW A CITY IS MADE, Rome was made by Romulus who traced a circle (pomeorium)* on the ground and declared it to be the city, and that anyone crossing would die. The spilled blood of his brother Remus over this line is the foundation of Rome.

THE ESSENCE OF A CITY IS: A WALL THAT PROTECTS A GARDEN.

THE STARTING POINT OF A CITY,

Create a museum of the Madina based on the essential and historical principles of the foundation of Cities. Because ‘Madina’ is the es¬sence of every city.

An oasis, in a valley is collecting rain water, plants grow there, an¬imals come for water, then humans. At some point the Oasis, the place, needs to be protected and a wall is erected.

The city wall de¬fines and create the city.

‫‪P R O P O S A L‬‬ ‫يف احلوار االلهي ملبادئ التخطيط احل�رضي �أبدى �سيدنا ابراهيم �إ�ستعجابه للمكان املختار لبناء الكعبة‬ ‫امل�رشفة الذي �إفتقد العن�رص الثاين لل�سكن واحلياة �أال وهو الزرع‪.‬‬ ‫ومن هنا كانت البداية‪ ,‬حيث �أن الوادي هو العن�رص الأول الذي يرتكز عليه قوام بداية بناء احلياة‪.‬وفكرة‬ ‫خلق الوادي جان�ست بني طبيعة البيئة واحلاجة واملكان‪.‬‬ ‫وعلى طرف الوادي جدار عظيم‪ ،‬ال يقل يف عالمته �أن يكون عجيبه ك�سور ال�صني العظيم وكعالمة يهتدى‬ ‫وي�ستدل بها يف �سماء املدينة وبني حراتها‪.‬‬

‫‪A VALLEY,‬‬ ‫‪The proposal is to create a valley in the center of the site, and to pro¬tect it with a large, monolithic, city-scaled, wall. This wall‬‬ ‫‪is a fraction of a virtual giant wall. It positions itself at the iconic level of China’s great Wall, and other great city defining walls.‬‬ ‫‪(Jericho, Jerusalem). The strength of such a bold proposal is placing the project directly at its level along National Museums.‬‬ ‫‪The garden is sunken and protected. Large eucalyptus (fast growing and low water demand) and shading the mild slope that‬‬ ‫‪invites the visitor to stroll through the garden to get to the project.‬‬ ‫‪The garden is a welcoming and comforting place, where one can wait or play while others are visiting the museum.‬‬

Visitors arrive mostly by bus, on the vast drop off, shaded by a generous canopy (shown on the left of the section). They gently slide along the sloped garden towards the building entrance.

‫الب�ستان‬ T H E G A R D E N, WELCOMING GARDEN, Visitors arrive from the Northern side of the site, they have to cross the garden to reach the building. They can do this through the mild slope, stairs, ramps or escalators. As they cross through the garden they will discover the transparent Muqarnas wall from which they will enter the building. Visitor can wait and enjoy the shades of the high eucalyptus trees, whose scent mixes with lavandulas and oregano.

SUNKEN PARVIS, In front of the scene (under the Muqarnas canopy), a large plaza, at level -1 is offering a great outdoor space for events.

The space is defined by offices at West, services (prayer hall, restrooms, VIP) at East, the slope garden at North and the building at South.

It’s outdoor, but also well define and comfortable.

The area is easy to control and also easy to evacuate.

The scene is already defined and protected by the canopy. The Muqa¬rnas are providing a great acoustic wall that will help to propagate sounds towards the spectators.

WELCOMING BUT PROTECTED, The lower strata of the garden is composed of lush bushes, which are carefully housed into squares that provide both a welcoming sitting and protection for the plants roots from the visitors. Fig trees (4), Birds of Paradise (5), Lavandulas (6) and Stipas (7) create soft and lush bubbles of green scattered on all the surface of the slope and sunken plaza.

LUSH GARDEN BUT SUSTAINABLE, All trees and plants are drought resistant and very economic in water. The Eucalyptus (1) have a very fast growth and quickly reach a height of 20 to 25 meters high. Terminalias (2) are trees for arid areas, they have a very beautiful horizontal structure and will perfectly comple¬ment all the areas between the streets and the building. Ficus Lyrata (3), provides deep shadows thanks to its large and thick leaves, they are glossy to reduce perspiration, therefore the tree doesn’t need much water.

CITY SCALE AND DEFINING,

The proposed Main Wall is 20 meters high and 140 meters long, in one piece. A massive, mythological, piece, boldly stating Madina’s presence to the World. The thinner edges are made with darker, disorganized bricks, to suggest that the building is just a remaining of a greater city wall.

When human construction reaches a scale that is the one of geological events, it provides another kind of impression, and the approach of such a large scale element (if it’s a single block) is always impres¬sive.

To resist sun and sand abrasion, great buildings count on the mass of their material, therefore their color is the one their material.

The abundant light of Saudi Arabia puts in evidence any relief of the material, and rather than relying on paint or other materials that change their aspect when subjected to climate.

The evidence lies in the simple truth - the brick - a constructive element that catches the sun and plays with the light.

Geometric patterns have always been a fascination, and the project’s great Wall will be used to display the evolution of those patterns along time.

It’s a very traditional technique, parent with carpet making, to ‘hand knit’ brick elevations. With the computing power of machines, we can take this art a step further, and aim for complexity on this large scale assembly.

The richness of the texture is even more perceptible on a simple volume, such as a cube. Contrary to colors or various materials, the richness here enhances and strengthens the boldness of the building.

THICKNESS OF THE “CITY WALL”, Several layers of history, a broken grain as if the wall would continue forever, defining the pomeorium.

ENDS OF THE “CITY WALL”, On Eastern and Western ends of the wall, bricks are darker and assembled in a different order. Large fractures can be seen, as if, previoulsy, the wall extended (to circle the Madina) and was roughly cut.

‫ن‬ ‫ي‬ ‫د‬ � ِ‫ض‬ ‫ال‬ ْ ّ C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST, As per the striking example of Alhambra, where the very monolithic and rough exteriors are making the richness of detail of the interior even more remarkable, a great contrast would be achieved between the transparency Muqarnas and the rough brick walls.

ROUGH AND ANCIENT, The “City Wall” is made from a multitude of rough bricks of 20x10x- 5cm, ordinated through a parametric software.

It’s aspect: cubic, rough, porous and massive, has a great aesthetic contrast with the light, transparent, aerial and sleek Muqarnas bays.

The large bay, opened towards the North and fully protected from the sun by a large canopy all year long, has a crystalline geometry that is a development of the traditional Muqarnas.

This particular architectural characteristic is evolved in order to become structural and transformed to a 3-dimensional lattice that holds glass. The full bay (25 meters high) becomes a shimmering piece of art. Colored glass reveals the mineral/ geological qualities of the geometry in a fascinating aesthetic.

GREAT HALL, With its 24 m. Height (a continuous void from basement round to roof), the Great Hall is a unique space. The scenic ramp flies softly within that sumptuous space, like a sculpture.

The rich pattern of the Muqarnas Wall’s inner structure enriches the large space, while providing views over the sunken garden.

The steel structure is covered by an elegant fiberglass shell, ramps and floors inside are hardwood : the way a museum of this standing should be.. Wood adds a warm and comfortable touch.

The very large glazed area is only possible and sustainable because of the canopy which is calculated to avoid ANY direct sun to the glazing, all year long. The other faces of the building are blind and self-shading thanks to the brick cantilevers.

The Great Hall is the first room a visitor discovers when he enters the building. The envelope of the building with its foundations are the main expense for construction. Adding a slab, with the steel construction system, is a minor cost increase. Therefore, it is proposed to already prepare a 5.000m2 of slab, as a provision. As all spaces are served by a technical back street, all the future constructions within the shell can be done without disturbance for the exhibitions. Space generosity is what prolongates the lifespan of a building with an ambitious program.

USERS: VISITORS AND STAFF, Most of the program is happening at basement level around the sunken courtyard. Visitors come from the North-West corner of the plot. Buses access to a drop-off and parking zone conveniently shaded by a canopy. Cars are parking at basement level so users can directly exit at the Parvis level.

For visitors dropped at ground-floor level, they can use stairs, escalators or just stroll down the sloped garden to reach the courtyard.

The Western and Southern sides of the courtyard house toilets, prayer halls, VIP lounge, offices and security as well as some technical spaces.

Visitors enter the building through the Muqarnas bay, at their right, and will exit on the other side once the visit is completed.

A typical visit starts by taking the elevator to the top floor, after having passed the reception in the Great Hall, and then continue through the exhibition rooms, with shortcuts always available.

From floor to floor, the visitor uses the scenic ramp to stroll peacefully through the exhibition and contemplate the garden.
