SILVER MEDAL FROM I-SWEEEP
After the first term final exams, there was an announcement on the physics board. I could not help reading what it had to say ZAMAN NEWSPAPER Zaman, Publisher Selmani Yazici, Editor-in Chief Gurkan Cil, Editor at Large

because the illustration was so attractive. The first phrase I saw was “sustainable world with ISWEEEP”. What is I-SWEEEP? It is “International Sustainable World Energy Engineering and Environment Project” Olympiad. I was surprised by the information. I tried to look for purpose and requirements. An organization, sponsored by Cosmos Foundation, universities and agencies, was inviting the students who were interested in becoming future engineers to go to the city of Houston, Texas, USA. Students would have to present their own projects in three main categories, Energy Engineering and Environment. ISWEEEP 2008 was looking forward to seeing applicants from all over the world. The ISWEEEP committee evaluated all the projects, applied for by the students the before the deadline, to make a selection of finalists.
The qualified students joined the program, from 1st to 5th of May 2008. There were two divisions in I-SWEEEP Fair. The senior division was open to US students and international students attending classes in grades 9 through 12, while the junior division was open to only US students attending classes in grades 6 through 8. The next day, I asked teachers to confirm the announcement and got some details about this Olympiad. Being a 12 grader made me uncertain about entering this program, but it also gave me a positive idea, as I am in the final year of high school. To find out was to send my application and project abstract to the committee. First, I had to search for a project, with quantitative data through experimentation followed by analysis and real life applications. Giving my project a topic was not so easy at that time
because I did not really have any new project in mind, and my previous projects and experiments do not seem to have a great application to sustain the w o r l d . O n e d a y, d u r i n g m y geology lesson, about using energy and fossil fuels, I came up with an idea to set my project focus on renewable energy. The reason is that fossil fuels are the biggest energy we are using today, but it will be depleted in a time frame relevant to human r a c e . M o r e o v e r, w e f a c e environmental impacts caused by fossil emission. People need alternative energy, which is cleaner and renewable. There are many kinds of renewable energy from solar, hydro, wind, geothermal and bio resources. I was so interested in the Fuel Cell, but finding materials I need would be too difficult. I talked to my science teachers for some advice in order to choose a renewable energy as my project. Continued on page 2
