ASEAN + 3 Student Camp & Teacher Workshop for the gifted in Science is organized by those who are devoted to science. Some students from several countries and schools have joined ACGS for seven years. It aims to arouse students’ interest and enthusiasm for science, team work and sharing ideas etc. Among Zaman students, KIRY KONG, RITHTEYUTH VA and OUSSA CHEA had a chance to join this event. Theme was Green Energy for life. So, we started to search about Green Energy. We kept in touch with students and during one week, they studied about Green Energy. Time went fast for us and on the 23rd of January evening; we took off for South Korea. When we arrived to Seoul, it was early and temperature was -16 °C. We had a transfer flight, but it was delayed until afternoon. So, workers suggested to use domestic flight and we tried it. When we went out, we really felt -16 °C. After boiling weather, we were shivering. On the other hand, we heard that the weather would be better in Changwon where it was actually -12 °C. Finally, we arrived to Changwon, although we arrived too late. Suddenly, we had dinner together with all other participants who are 20 teachers and 80 students. We tried to understand each other, to make a connection and build a friendship.

tories to listen to lectures and do some experiments. In the night time, they were still studying as a team. the third and sixth days were activity days. We had winter activities. So, time went fast again and on the fifth day, there was a presentation given by students and cultural show. All groups presented their presentations and judges gave points. After 2- hour break time, we went to conference hall and everyone was excited. All in all, we received a gold and two bronze medals. I’m really proud of our students and I have to thank our principal Mr. M. Gurkan Cil and head of physics Mr. Mustafa Ozgur who gave a chance for us. Also, I thank our students’ families who gave permission for going to competition. We will not forget this memorable time. I look forward to participating in the next competition ACADEMIC to win another Gold medal for Cambodia and Zaman InternaMr. Isa Yildiz tional School. Physics Teacher

On the first day, a welcome speech from Ministers was given in the morning and students were divided into 9 groups, teachers were divided into 2 groups as well. Name: Ritheyuth Va Class: 10B On the fourth week of January, it was such a gigantic event in South Korea. I stayed there about one week and it was the first time for me to be there and be a part of contestant on the stage of an international competition. It was a memorable week because we had many experiences and lectures from this competition, mostly about science (environmental). In one week, I learned and knew a lot of things because I had new friends from different Asian countries, experienced the winter season about -18°C, local food in South Korea, sightseeing and friendship with different people. Furthermore, we got a lecture from our professor; he came from one of the best science universities in Korea. Then, we had lunch and activities with other students. Moreover, every night about 8-10 pm, we had a team discussion for our project with other countries. From one day to another day, we felt the same as brothers and sisters because we had fun and spent a whole time with our group. On Friday, it was a final day for our team project so we had

to present in front of many audiences, teachers and especially in front of Asean +3 chairman. I was a bit nervous but finally I did it. After a project day, we went to theme park, ice sledding and playing snowballs. I can say that it was such a pleasure time. Overall, I had a lot of memories. My favorite food in this event was a mama noodle and kimchi because the local food was really hard for me and the weather was extremely cool. I really enjoyed this event and I hope there will be another opportunity for me in South Korea.

Name: Kiry Kong Class: 10B It was a great chance for me to join the 7th APT-SCTW at Changwon Science High School, Changwon, Republic of Korea with Mr. Isa Yildiz, Rithteytuh Va and Oussa Chea. There are many unforgettable memories that we have had together since the January 23rd, 2016 at Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH). Tone of the great memories that I can’t forget is the time when we all needed to be at ICN airport because our flight to Busan was delayed due to the heavy snow in the other airport so the plane could not arrive ICN on time. In this case I would like to thank Mr.Isa that he struggled so hard to find a new flight for us otherwise, we can be late for the welcoming dinner at Changwon as well. Oh! I forgot to mention about the freezing -18oC weather right there that happened the first time in this last 20 years. I am pretty sure that all of us can’t forget the K-pop songs that were played all around the dormitory building as an

alarm to wake us up every morning at 7.00am. We then made our way to the 1st floor lobby for breakfast which was served at 7.30am. After breakfast, we had a team meeting session at 8.40am. After the team meeting, we had to be present for a lecture at the school building which ended just before lunch time at 12.30pm. The afternoon routine started at 1.30pm with another team meeting session. At 6.30pm we had to be at the 1st floor lobby of the dormitory for dinner with our team members. The last programme for the day which lasted from 7.20pm to 10.30pm was a discussion on our team’s project. This daily routine was repeated every day except for the last 2 days. On the 29th of January 2016, we had our project’s presentation with the awarding ceremony and a cultural performance. We also enjoyed our last Saturday at Bugok Hawaii for the freeze snow sledding, ice sculpture house, snowball fight and many other amazing rides.

Name: Oussa Chea Class: 11B When I was first asked if I had wanted to join a science competition in Korea, my response was…shaky. I wasn’t that confident that I was going to bring back any medals for the school or for myself but when I got there; I got relaxed a bit more since the others looked like they were unsure of what to do as well. We were told that our task was finding new ways to use existing Green energy sources. To say that our project went smoothly would be very contradictory; it was anything but smooth. There were communication issues

left and right since we were basically strangers from different countries. But somehow, we were able to conclude something out of this newfound friendship and it managed to get us bronze medals. Overall, I was satisfied and felt good that I actually got a medal instead of getting none. I hope that I might get to join another competition like this (Though I’m sure my response will be as shaky as always).

MEET THE STUDENT The Student Magazine Board, a newly formed team, takes over Zaman High School Magazine. It has a variety of 9 members. We do many things – write about different events that has happened, are happening, and will happen in Zaman, receive various articles and accounts from students and teachers and classify them in the magazine, act as the student voice of choice for how the school magazine should be heading, and contribute unusual knowledge. With that said, we hope to entertain readers with the accounts of the whole quarter.

VISITING SCHOOLS IN BANGKOK As you may know, ZIS is a member of CIS (Council of International Schools) and has been going through the accreditation process. The readers of the previous issues of this magazine might have read the articles penned by Mr. Muhtor Adashev about CIS Accreditation. The school is experiencing lots of renovations and visitations, which help ZIS to become a better school in realizing its mission which is to advance academic quality in a safe and supportive environment to enable the students to realize their potential and develop maturity, responsibility and

8

awareness of becoming a global citizen. To this end, we welcomed two educators to our school at the end of last academic year. Dr. Bill Parker, a School Support & Evaluation Officer (SSEO) at CIS, and Mr. Martin, the principal of one of the international schools in Thailand, visited our school on behalf of CIS and gave us some recommendations. On the purpose of paying them a visit, our school contacted some international schools in Bangkok, Thailand, which are members of CIS, to meet them in their campuses.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

These kinds of visits are neither the first at ZIS nor unaccustomed to ZIS students or faculty, who attend the international seminars, competitions, sports events and meetings abroad throughout the year. Two years ago, some of the administrators from both the Primary and High School Sections of ZIS had a one- week tour of South Korea and Japan visiting the international schools and exchanging ideas with the professional educators, which was very exhausting yet fruitful event. At the end of November, three admin staff took flight to the hustling and bustling city of Thailand and spent two days visiting very wellknown and accredited international schools such as Patana, SISB and Tupsy-Turvy. The admission staff welcomed us at the entrances of the schools cordially and gave us a through school tour of the campus, which we enjoyed very much and helped us get new ideas to improve our school environment. Later on, we had our appointed meetings with the school admin to discuss about teaching/learning, students’ welfare, assessment, internationalism, recruitment, governance and CIS standards. It was a good opportunity to share ideas and experiences with them.

We invited their faculty to Cambodia and visit our campuses, as well. At the end of each visit, we exchanged our cards and some souvenirs and presented them some gifts as tokens of appreciation and hospitality. ZIS takes pride in being a member of CIS because schools around the world join CIS for guidance, support and access to like-minded peers as they develop challenging international programmes for their students. As a global organization, CIS helps schools access new international educational practices, gain recognition for accomplishments, attract qualified staff, facilitate student connections with leading universities around the world, and provide a quality international education experience to students and parents. We are indebted to Dr. Bill Parker, who helped us visit these international schools and keep in touch with them. We would like to present our gratitude to the School ACADEMIC Board for the invaluable support and guidance on Mr. Kudret Dogan Vice-Principal the accreditation path.

We were chosen to represent Cambodia at the International Culture Festival held in Myanmar. Our flight took about two and a half hour. When we arrived in Yangon International Airport, we were guided to ride a taxi and they brought us to a hotel. The environment in Myanmar was similar to Cambodia’s. In the morning, we wore our traditional clothes and took a taxi to the festival’s location. We were then directed to a booth which had a huge banner that indicated ‘’Cambodia’’. We helped the Myanmar students decorate our booths and got to know them well. After the opening ceremony, people came to our booth and asked questions related to our country. During our breaks, we walked around to try out dishes from different countries and also took pictures with them. The event ended at 5 p.m., and then we went back to the hotel. Next morning, we went to the festival hall again and repeated the same procedures as the first day. Towards the end of the program, we were called to the stage and received our certificates. After that, we were brought to Horizon International School, the main organizer school in Myanmar. After a long day, we headed for our hotel. Next day, we shopped around for souvenirs and went to the airport at noon. This was an unforgettable trip and we hope to join similar activities as such again.

Only butterflies of a thousand colors could perplex giant dragons. Small isles could survive the most violent storms. We knew that we could stand against all the odds, strengthened by the legacy of our forefathers. That even if the world collapsed, a handful of people were enough to rebuild it. And that if we could work together, tales could become real! IFLC (International Festival of Language and Culture) is the largest and most prominent organization for promoting world languages and cultures. It is dedicated to create a platform to share cultural heritage with their peers around the world since 2003. This year Cambodia was invited to show its beautiful culture in Thailand where we enjoyed all these different cultures and discovered different colors of the world. Panhabvatey (8E) and I were very lucky to be able to take part in this 1-week long beautiful journey. Therefore, I would like to thank, first of all, Panhavatey’s parents for growing up a respectful child who can handle this big responsibility to reflect Khmer culture in a foreign country. And secondly, very big thanks to Zaman school teachers. Without their great effort, these kids might not have a chance to be where they are today.

Meeting my new friends was a chance of mine to be able to meet great people. Even though we were together for only a week, it felt like I had known them longer. Everyone took care of each other and it made me feel like I was with my family. I still keep in touch with my buddies from IFLC program and I hope I will get a chance to meet them once again.

The New Year’s Eve party that we held was pretty good, in my opinion. At first, we were nervous about If anyone were interested at all to join the party. As it turned out, the school admin granted us permission to hold the party and all of the tickets for the party were sold out. As the day drew nearer, we were getting anxious with the preparations, hoping that everything was ready on time. When the day came, we spent most of our morning sessions doing the final touches in the canteen, which was where the party was held. Even though everyone came to the party earlier than we expected, the flow of the event was okay. We had music, games and some performances from our willing students. We even did a mock countdown at the end since it was a New Year’s Eve party. All in all, I believe that the event was a fair success. Everyone seemed to have had a good time. I would also like to thank the school admin for allowing us to hold such an event, the canteen for their help, the performers, everyone else who helped us with the preparations, we couldn’t have done it without you, and everyone else who attended the New Year’s Eve party.

BLOOD DONATION

Blood donation is one of the most significant contributions that a person can make towards the society. Nowadays a public awareness is noticed to donate blood. Many clubs, schools, societies, offices, etc. organize blood donation camps on different occasions. It is a healthy gesture. We must keep this aptitude up at any cost. Many people need blood transfusion every day. A simple act of generosity and kindness can save many lives. The goal of our school was to help people in Cambodia. Zaman International School together with National Blood Center conducted blood donation in Zaman high school campus on 16 January 2016. The event was a success. Many teachers and staff donated their blood as well as some of our visitors. And I was one of them. It was my first time but it’s not new to me since I am working in the medical field. By following some guidelines and preparations before donating blood will keep you

16

on the go before the big day. Many people think that if you donate blood it will cause harm to your body, but that’s not true. An adult person can donate blood as long as he/she is healthy and passes the requirements. The body of the donor can regenerate the blood within few days. It poses no threat to the metabolism of the body. You only need to replace your blood sugar by drinking and eating after the said procedure. So what are you waiting for, roll up your sleeves and save lives!

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW AT SECONDARY AND HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS Advancing academic quality is not an easy task. Much revision has to be carried out and updates implemented to keep up with 21st century skills. Keep in mind that some skills are timeless such as doing experiments in the lab or essay writing.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (ACADEMIC YEAR 2015 - 2016)

At Zaman International School, we try to make your experience worthwhile. This academic year, Zaman International School took a step to excel in whole school improvement and introduced two new programmes and reshaped the initial one: Bilingual Science, Bilingual Social and International. Bilingual Science (BSC) Programme is a traditional curriculum, which has been in place since the launch of the school and has undergone thorough revisions over the years to refine the content. At Secondary and High School Campus, students complete six years of secondary general education (grade 7 to 12) in the National curriculum. Secondary education consists of three years each for lower secondary education (grade 7 to 9) and upper secondary education (grade 10 to 12). English-medium Curriculum is based on the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) qualifications, namely, Cambridge Checkpoint, Cambridge IGCSE as well as Cambridge International A level. In accordance with the mission of the school, English-medium curriculum strives to provide comprehensive education bringing in the elements of all subject areas: Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, Art, PE, and Music. The latter subjects remain in the introductory level due to space constraints in the timetable, the former ones are emphasized across the years. Zaman students have performed successfully in the Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry since 2011. In order to enhance the student experience by undertaking the whole curriculum, Zaman International School, introduced a new programme in 2015/2016 academic year. Following the mission of the school, to provide academic quality that develops a global citizen, the aim of the programme is to have one comprehensive integrated curriculum, a combination of Khmer and English- medium subjects where students learn science and mathematics in the mother tongue and develop strong academic competency in English through Arts, Humanities, and ICT. Having a strong command in academic English will lead students to eventually take English–medium Examinations in the subjects they mastered in their mother tongue. The International Programme covers all the main subject areas with the option of two foreign languages, Chinese and French. Curriculum development will remain as a work in progress. We will continue to do a number of pilots and revisions in order to provide students with the best education possible. ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

The importance of fire drills Fire drills are an important part of our fire safety procedures for many reasons. Not only do they ensure that all students and staff to our premises understand what they need to do if there is a fire, but they also help us to test how effective our fire evacuation plan is and to improve certain aspects of our fire provisions.

PROCEDURE DURING CLASS TIME 1. Students exit classroom via door and WALK in orderly lines. 2. Students evacuate the building by designated routs to the assembly area (Boys side students got to BOYS GARDEN,Girls side&Bso Int. students go to FRONT of SCHOOL). 3. NO TALKING IS PERMITTED!! 4. Teachers: a. Take your attendance folder with you. b. Check that all students are out of the classroom. c. Check that all exits are clear. d. Close classroom door. 5. In assembly area, teacher takes roll and accounts for each child. 6. Students remain in orderly and silent lines until all clear signal is given (one long bell). PROCEDURE DURING P.E. 1. Teacher, or supervising adult, stops play, organizes class(es) into silent and orderly lines and conducts class(es) to assembly area. PROCEDURE WHEN NOT IN YOUR OWN CLASSROOM 1. Teachers should be familiar with assembly area and evacuation route designated for that classroom or area. 2. The EMERGENCY CLASS LIST FOLDER should accompany the class and be used by the teacher, or supervising adult, to account for all students. ALL SCHOOL PERSONNEL, CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED ARE TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL FIRE DRILLS. Parents, guests and community people on the grounds during a drill must participate. Adults are reminded that no talking is allowed. Please be good role models for the children.

International Music Festival of Phnom Penh

International Music Festival of Phnom Penh has celebrated its 12th year in 2015 November at Intercontinental Phnom Penh. Each year, it brings renowned artists, performers and gifted professional and pre-professional musicians from around the world to our beautiful nation, Cambodia. People who live in Cambodia enjoy one week of delighted music each year which changes the atmosphere around the country. This year, the festival was held from November 12th until 16th in which one of the most talented classical musician of Cambodia and our dear colleague, Rong Sereyvann, has taken a part in. This year’s program aimed to reflect social and cultural impact of art and music of European countries starting from enlightenment until romanticism. For those who participated watching one of these remarkable nights tasted enlightenment spirit with passion of Ludwig Van Beethoven. As a revolutionary artist, his political interests were translated into what we know today as a greatest music works in history.

Moreover, the pattern of romanticism, where science and nature began to be the theme of written compositions shifting from the nobility, gave a different soul to today’s most famous and loved classical pieces. Romantic era was when compositions became stories, elements of national pride and representing emotions. As a foreign living in Cambodia, I was very happy to see the growing dialogue between various cultures and its social cultural impact to the development of different societies. It was even happier to see a professional Cambodian artist takes a part playing with an orchestra behind, for the very first time in the history of festival. Congratulations to Teacher Vann for his great effort and excellent performance. It was a very delightful night watching you perform on an international stage representing this beautiful country.

FIRST AID TRAINING

On January 30-31, 2016 I was one of the participants in First Aid Course. In the course, there were many participants from Zaman International School-Kindergarten, Primary and High School Campuses, and also staff from the Head Office. I really enjoyed learning during the course because I received many tips & suggestions from the trainers and understood the meaning of First Aid, and what DRS and ABC. The trainers explained the ways to help the person and the choices we should make in the case of emergency. Moreover, I learned how to help the victims using Basic life Support (BLS), following the step of DRS (Dangerous, Responsive, send for help), ABC (Open Air Way, Normal Breathing, Check pulse and start CPR). In an emergency situation, CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – can be a truly lifesaving technique. Why? Because CPR can provide the means to keep a person alive long enough to receive professional medical attention. There may be situations where a person ACADEMIC needs medical proviMs. Nasros Chhouk sion, dressing and banVice-Principal dage, or if the person can respond consciously, different steps should be followed to help them. At the end of the course, participants enjoyed the volunteer practice and we received certificates from the training.

I had an opportunity to take First Aid Training course at Zaman University. It was well presented and doctors gave us plenty of opportunities to take part in practice. First Aid is an initial assistance for the victim. By using relatively simple but correct techniques, we can provide help to others and in the same time to ourselves. I think everyone should participate in the First Aid Training course. Accidents can happen everywhere and we cannot simply stay there without doing anything which will potentially worsen the situation. IT IS UP FOR DEBATE

Our English teacher Mr. Kudret arranged a class debate with the topic ‘having pets at home’. He separated the class into 4 groups consisting of the Cons, Pros, Judge and Inquirer. Each team had 5 members and I was part of the Pros. My team and I prepared some information for upcoming questions from the inquirer and our opponent. On that day, during the English session, we were all excited and very nervous at the same time. We positioned our table in a rectangular shape facing each other and the debate began. We started of quite rusty, the Cons got good reasons for not having pets and they answered the question from the inquirer smoothly; however after a couple of questions, we came back. We got ourselves together and went through the information. The question from the inquirer was tough and if we couldn’t answer, the judge will deduct our points. The judge recorded every point both team got and evaluated the points from each team’s actions and reasons. The debate ended with crucial evaluation from the judges, all the students left the room when the judges were calculating. After the break time, Mr.Kudret gave his speech about our performance and in the end one of the judges stood up and announced the winner. My team and I won, as a reward Mr.Kudret gave us a ticket to the movies which was very motivating.

WHAT SHOULD I READ? HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR LOST TIME By François Lelord

ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES By Jennifer Niven “It’s not what you take, it’s what you leave.” Theodore Finch, was always known as a bad kid or a weirdo. However, no one knew that because other kids were teasing him at school, he wanted to die. One day, when Theodore was walking around his school, he saw Violet Markey. She was on top of a very high building, willing to jump. Luckily, Theodore ran up to stop her on time. Later other students saw the two on top of the building, and Theodore, trying to save Violet’s reputation, became the person who got saved from taking a leap to the underworld. Afterwards, it was as if destiny was at work, the two were assigned to do a project together about the interesting places in town. While they were visiting places for their project, Theodore tried to understand why she was up on that building the other day and eventually, after some research, found out that it was Violet’s older sister’s death anniversary. This threw some light on the situation. Surprisingly, the more Theodore stayed with Violet, the more love he had for her and the more thoughts of suicide came to his head. Will Violet be his savior? Or will she drag him down? Will Violet’s love be enough? In this book Niven has displayed how words can affect a person’s life. It has opened up a whole new meaning of how we all should learn a very important lesson - never judge a person, because we never know what is happening in his/her life, unwittingly, we may be the reason why someone would want to disappear, forever.

“Time exercise no.4 : Think of all the people and things you are not paying attention to now, because one day they will be gone and then it will be too late.” Hector is a young talented psychiatrist. Actually, he was not exactly young anymore. Anyway, back to the story, because of spending every minute inside his office, he forgot that time is passing by and it does not wait for anyone. Many of his patients were complaining about not having enough time each day, some would wish time to slow down, some measured their own life in dog years because dogs have a shorter life span than humans, others wanted time to speed up so that they could make their own decisions and have independence, and there were many more ideas that differ from each other. He spends more and more time thinking about time. Thus leading himself to two conclusions, one is that you fear that time passes by too quickly which becomes quite a distressing fear to have, because there is nothing much to be done about it. Second is the feeling that time is passing too slowly that seems like “sitting on a donkey that doesn’t want to budge.” Hector wanted to suggest some little exercises for his patients but as a psychiatrist himself, he can obviously just tell people what they need to do to get better, and he also knows that the chances they will not pay attention to his words properly is high. He thinks it’s better to help them discover it by themselves of what would be best for them. A few days after, having trouble with time management, he received a letter from one of his friends calling him to visit in Eskimo. He said, “Time has a different meaning here, and that is for the time in his life, that he does not feel as if he is alive.” Hector decided to go. He thought that it might be a good opportunity to spend a few days off enjoying vacation with his fiancé since both of them barely have time for one another. However, Clara refuses to go with him to Eskimo. What could be the reason? What kind of place is Eskimo? For those who struggle with time and want it to slow down should definitely read this book. There is time exercise that has been suggested from psychiatrists. Hector will be more helpful than you could have imagined.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO STUDY ABROAD? To continue your studies abroad, various requirements need to be accomplished. There are tests to take, volunteering work, and several other achievements.

nately, a friend of mine came upon a volunteering website and found a suitable work which she recommended. There, we were teaching young HIV infected children how to read.

The most noticeable requirement is tests such as IGCSEs, A levels, SAT, ACT, ILs, TOEFL, etc. In my days, there weren’t many applicants to colleges abroad and career counseling would usually focus on domestic universities. Some foreign school representatives who stopped by at our school, then, introduced me to schools oversea. After researching for different favorable university choices and looking through application samples, I learned that SAT was commonly required, which led to the understanding of the first step of everything – taking SAT. I registered for SAT online. A couple friends of mine, who similarly did so, came together and decided to group-study and self-study for the test. We ordered the SAT preparation book online and got to work.

Lastly, you would need high school transcript; additionally, grades and GPAs. Also, you have to get a recommendation letter from a teacher. And the most important piece in the application form is your personal statement in which you describe yourself, including a little autobiography and the reason for your choice of major and university, to persuade the school that you’re worthy of the spot in their college. Last advice, during your early stages of school, you should definitely start preparing yourself for your own future before the end of your eleventh year. Have good connections and be in resourceful circles to increase your chance.

The other essential ingredient is volunteering. At the time, this was something new to us, scarcely seen or heard. It was very hard to find one. Fortu-

CHINESE NEW YEAR Every country has its own culture and traditions, one is older than the other. China is one of the countries that have very rich history. Chinese New Year is a part of their traditional culture that has been followed for centuries. According to the Chinese calendar, it starts on the 1st of February and ends on 7th. The first day of the New Year, all the family members gather together with food, board games, and enjoy each other’s company. At night the elders will give a red envelope to the younger generations. As believed, in the first night of the New Year, the nian monster will come out to find food. Kids are it’s favorite one. From the 2 nd-7 th February, people start visiting the relatives in the provinces. Starting from the eldest to the youngest, but it also depends how far they are. For every visit, they will bring various foods and souvenirs to show respect. Chinese New Year is a great opportunity to celebrate the upcoming year, fill it with joy and happiness. TECHNOLOGY IS GREAT The technology we use on a daily basis has now become very advanced. Without technology there would be no computers, laptops, or even cell phones. So what is it about technology that makes it so powerful? Well, technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment. It draws upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. There are many more aspects of technology which have changed our daily lives, such as the internet, smartphones, 3G, and many more. Technology is certainly very important to us. It was created to change our lives and make it easier through improved communications, easy access to information, improved housing and lifestyle, improved entertainment, convenience in education, and convenience in travel. Although it may seem harmless and helpful, there are still several down sides to technology. For example, people are now being replaced by machines making many jobless. Some people are creating world-destruction weapons which can lead to war. Additionally, there is an increase in loneliness and most importantly a lot of us now have a feeling of dependence on modern tools. Despite everything, I would still like to see technology advance further into something unique, something that is very unexpected, and also something which can help people’s lives.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WINNING AT SCHOOL There are many different methods that can be used as ways to optimize (improve) study and learning behaviors. Often, we have different things that we need to study, whether it is for our job or school. Measures of study skills, strategies, or techniques can serve as problem-solving tools to help us be in better position to succeed in learning. Study behaviors include functions of being able to: acquire, organize, synthesize, evaluate, remember, and use information. So, what are some useful strategies we can use to enhance our ability to study for class and for tests? What to do: 1. Schedule daily studying and homework time. - It is important that we put aside time every day for the sole purposes of studying and doing homework. Even if there is no assigned homework or test for your next class, it is important to take some time reviewing the notes of your previous lecture. 2. Make lists of things to accomplish during studying. - Make a checklist for each class and write down what specific things you need to complete. 3. Put off pleasurable events until work is completed. -This is a hard one for most of us. Sometimes it is difficult to stop playing COD or DOTA, watching anime and beating all the noobs, etc... Obviously, most of us would rather be doing something more enjoyable and fun. BUT use these activities as a reward for your hard work for completing your work. That is, commit yourself to finishing the things you’ve included on your checklist and once completed, reward yourself by doing whatever makes you happy. 4. Read the textbook/review the class text book and assignments before going to class. - Sure, all of your teachers say this to you time and time again. But, how much does this actually matter? It matters a lot! Reading the textbook helps to prepare you for material that you likely have not learned before, so once your teacher goes over that area of your textbook, things will be clearer to you. On the other hand, reading the material AFTER you’ve learned it will be a great way of you being able to remember what you’ve learned. 5. Create Mnemonics (memory aids/reminders) and vivid mental images to aid learning. - Many of us are visual learners, so sometimes if we can place pictures with our learning it will help us learn the material faster and smoother. 6. Memorize the material through repetition. - This is a great method when studying for a quiz and/or test. Repeat the material in your head and out loud over and over. Preferably, do this right before you go to bed, because it has been proven that memory is retained while we dream. So, even though you might start having dreams about physics and having nightmares of calculus equations, it’ll be a good idea. 7. Generate examples to apply the material. - Try to develop your own examples. If you can use examples that you are familiar with, it will help in applying it to the material you are studying. 8. Record information relating to study tasks. - Keep a good record (study log) to keep track of the amount of time you are putting into studying for each subject. You may find that you need to put more time into a particular subject, while your stronger subjects you may not have to continue spending quite as much time studying the material.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

9. Self-verbalize the steps to complete a given task. - Speak out loud what steps you need to complete for each task. 10. Use chapter review questions to self-test -Use chapter review questions at the end of each chapter or request that your teacher make a chapter review guide WITHOUT the answers to the questions. 11. Use a study partner. - Using a study partner is a great way of staying motivated and interested. However, make sure both of you stay on task and actually STUDY and test each other. Do not use this time to socialize, play video games etc. 12. Review the items missed on the exam - When you are given your marked exams back from your teacher, make sure you go over the questions you missed and find the correct answers and seek to understand why the answer is the correct answer. 13. Make an outline before writing a paper. - When writing a paper, start out by brainstorming ideas. 14. Check work before handing in an assignment. - Often we are so determined to just turn in our work, that we forget the essential task of actually checking the work before we turn it in. Before turning in your homework, test, or quiz make sure you actually go over each question and your answer again. What NOT to do: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Do not spend too much time on key terms or summaries to the extent of paying little attention to other review questions and etc. Do not highlight too much text (i.e. not knowing what the important information really is), thus increasing the amount of study material you would actually have. Do not use chapter review questions (and their answers) as more content to study versus using them to test their own knowledge Do not “study with a friend” where this DOES NOT involve testing each other, taking review questions, creating examples, or reviewing notes. Do not listen to music, watch TV, text message, or surf the internet while you study.

I leave you with this famous quote. “Achieving is believing”

ASIA/CAMBODIA Warning of a hand-foot-mouth disease that mainly affects malnourished children According to some experts, the high rate of malnutrition in Cambodia has caused the rapid spread of an outbreak of hand-footmouth disease which, since last April, has killed 54 poor boys and girls. When the outbreak was at its worse, all kindergartens and primary schools across Cambodia were closed to try to contain the spread of Enterovirus-71 (EV-71) which is supposedly responsible for the outbreak of the disease known as hands-foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and is a viral infection. HFMD affects in particular infants and children and the infection occurs through contact with mucus, saliva or faeces of someone infected. The outbreaks generally occur in Southeast Asia during the rainy season. In Kantha Bopha hospital in the Cambodian capital, the majority of infected children died between April and late June. In several provinces mild forms of the disease have been recorded, and there may be hundreds of cases not detected because of very limited health services in the country. It is impossible to determine the mortality rate for severe form of HFMD. Only recently has the government of Cambodia begun to collaborate with the World Health Organization (WHO) for their monitoring. Joint research by the Cambodian Ministry of Health and WHO showed that the virus EV-71, one of the known causes of HFMD, was present in most reported cases. Many children died during the first day of hospitalization and prior to contracting the disease they were all malnourished or suffering from other chronic diseases. Malnutrition affects 40% of Cambodian children, making them more vulnerable to infectious diseases. The country has the third highest rate of child malnutrition among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and 28% of children under 5 years of age are underweight or too small for their age. The "hidden hunger", the lack of vitamins or minerals, is another serious problem of the country where half of all children under 5, the most vulnerable to HFMD, are anemic, mainly due to lack of iron. Almost 9 out of 10 are already anemic at one year of age. According to WHO, this year, more than 1.27 million cases of mild and severe HFMD have been recorded in China, with 356 deaths, compared to slightly more than 711,300 cases last year. It also seems that the number of cases in Singapore has gone from 871 to over 26 000 in the first six months of this year. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 26/7/2012)

42

In 2014, Cambodia experienced an outbreak of EV71 comparable to the 2012 outbreak. At least 80 EV71 patients with SEP presented at Kantha Bopha Hospital during the year. Through the collaboration of Institut Pasteur du Cambodge with Kantha Bopha Hospital they continue to monitor encephalitis cases and confirm suspected EV71 infections in 2015. In Cambodia during 2012, a disease outbreak characterized by severe encephalitis with pulmonary edema (SEP) resulted in at least 52 fatalities in young children. EV71 serotype C4 was identified as the causative organism. This was the first time that EV71 had been recorded in Cambodia and the severity of illness and the large number of severe cases was a concern for national and international health authorities. What is hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and what causes it? HFMD is due to an infection that usually causes a typical illness, including a typical rash. It is most commonly caused by the Coxsackie (CA16) virus. Some cases are caused by a different but related virus called Enterovirus (EV71). These viruses live in the body’s digestive tract and spread from person to person, usually on unwashed hands and surfaces contaminated by faeces (poop). Kids 1 to 4 years old are most at risk for the disease, as infections are common in childcare centers, preschools, and other places where kids are in close quarters. The illness typically lasts 3-5 days. Like many viral infections, the illness often starts with a feeling of being unwell for a day or so. This might include a high temperature (fever). After this, a sore throat commonly occurs, quickly followed by small spots that develop inside the mouth. These soon progress into small mouth ulcers. Spots may appear on the lips or around the mouth as well or instead of inside the mouth. In many cases, spots also develop on the skin. This is typically a day or so after the mouth ulcers develop. The spots are small lumps that are a few millimeters in diameter and usually appear on the hands and feet. Spots sometimes also appear on the buttocks, legs, and genitals. They rarely develop on other parts of the body. The spots are similar to chickenpox but are smaller. Unlike chickenpox, they are not usually itchy but sometimes they can be a little bit sore. Outbreaks are most common during the warm summer and early fall months, but can happen year-round in tropical parts of the world. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is not the same as hoof and mouth disease, which is an unrelated illness that affects barnyard animals and livestock.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Is hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) serious? Usually not. The high temperature (fever) and spots usually clear within a few days. The mouth ulcers can be painful and may last up to a week. The sore mouth may make a child miserable for a few days. In a very small number of cases, the virus affects the heart, lung or brain to cause a serious inflammation of the heart, lung or brain, which is fatal in some cases. But it has to be stressed - these serious complications are very rare.

• Lidocaine gel. This is a local anaesthetic, which means it numbs the area. This can be used in children. • Benzydamine mouthwash or spray. The spray can be used from 5 years of age, the mouthwash from 12. • Choline salicylate gel. This cannot be used in children under the age of 16. Pregnant women should also not use it. • Warm salty mouthwashes. A mouthwash with a warm solution of salt and water may help. It should only be used if you are certain your child is old enough to spit it out and not swallow it. • As mentioned above, paracetamol or ibuprofen may also help with sore ness in the mouth. Tell a doctor if a child stops drinking due to a sore mouth as, rarely, dehydration may develop. Also, see a doctor promptly if you are concerned about any unusual symptoms that develop.

What is the treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD)?

Is hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) infectious?

There is no treatment that will take away the virus. The aim is to ease symptoms and make the person as comfortable as possible until the illness goes away. Treatment is the same for children and adults.

Yes. The incubation period is 3-5 days. This means it takes 3-5 days to develop symptoms after being infected from another person. There is no vaccine to prevent HFM disease or other similar infections. Most cases are passed on by coughing and sneezing which transmits the virus into the air. It can also be passed on by touching the fluid in the blisters. The virus can also be passed in stools (feces). So if a person with the virus goes to the toilet and doesn’t wash their hands well, they can pass it on to someone else. It is mainly infectious until the spots and mouth ulcers have gone. Sometimes small outbreaks occur in nurseries and schools. However, children can still be mildly infectious for several weeks longer, as the virus may be passed out with the feces for several weeks after the symptoms have gone. Therefore, it is sensible to maintain good hygiene to reduce the chance of passing on the virus. For example: • Make sure that children wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet. • Aim to keep mouth and nose covered when coughing and sneezing. Wipe the nose and mouth with disposable tissues. • Adults should take particular care when handling nappies and tissues. Wash hands thoroughly after handling nappies and tissues. • Soiled clothes, bedding and towels should be washed on a hot cycle of the washing machine. • It is best not to share cups, eating utensils, towels, etc, whilst ill with this infection and for several weeks afterwards. • Do not deliberately pierce blisters, as the fluid is infectious.

Keep the temperature down A high temperature (fever) can make anyone feel uncomfortable and irritable. The following are things that you can do that may bring the temperature down and make the person with HFMD feel more comfortable: • You can give paracetamol or ibuprofen. Both of these medicines can lower a temperature. Because these are painkillers, they will also help the soreness in the mouth. For children you can buy these medicines in liquid form or flavoured tablets that melt in the mouth. They come in various brand names. The dose for each age is given with the medicine packet. You do not need to use these medicines if the person is comfortable or does not have a fever. • Keep the person or child cool. Remove clothes or use light cotton clothes or bedding. Open windows or use a fan in the room where appropriate. Do not cold-sponge a child who has a fever. This used to be popular but it is now not advised. This is because the blood vessels under the skin become narrower (constrict) if the water is too cold. This reduces heat loss and can trap heat in deeper parts of the body. The child may then become worse. Many children also find cold-sponging uncomfortable. Give plenty to drink Give the person plenty to drink. This helps to prevent lack of fluid in the body (dehydration). They might find this easier if their mouth is less sore, and if their temperature is down. So, if they are not keen to drink, it may help to give some paracetamol or ibuprofen first. Then, try them with drinks half an hour or so later when the medication has started to work.

What about going to school? Guidance from Public Health England is that children should not routinely be kept from school if they have hand, foot and mouth disease, if they are well enough in themselves to attend. Although there is a risk of passing it on to others, the illness is usually mild. If your child feels unwell or miserable, however, you may wish to keep them off school until they feel well enough to attend. Treatments for a sore mouth Soft foods may be easier to eat with a sore mouth, so try foods such as soups, ice cream, smoothies and mashed potato. There are a few treatments available for ulcers in the mouth. However, it is not known how effective they are. Also not all of them can be used for children. If other measures are not helping, here are some of the possible treatments:

CLASS DAY PARTY On 16th January, we had our first ever Class Day Party with our class, 8-A. We, as a class, practiced really hard to give everyone a perfect and emotional class day. We spent two months rehearsing our performances. Every student in the class had a responsibility. On Saturdays, we always came to school for rehearsal. We were divided into groups to practice our own work. While we were busy practicing our performances, we had plenty of happy moments. We laughed together and we got upset together when our work went wrong. After all the preparations, the day had come. We believe that most of the performances that we performed on the Class Day have never been done by any other classes before. However, we should mention that all of us, behind stage, were really nervous. When it was almost time for the beginning of the performance, Seuchung expressed his feelings: ‘My heart is starting to beat quickly. Look at my face! It looks pale and cold.’ Our program started with the National Anthem. We sang four different songs in three different languages; Khmer, Turkish, and English. These electrified the audience. Especially the dramas we performed in both English and Khmer, they were amazed by them. In addition, we had an educational performance which was counting the periodic table in order. This was one of the audience’s favourite. Mengsrun, the teacher in the performance, asked the class whether they know the periodic table or not. Hongthai and Sovann said they know it but they can only rap it, counting fast the periodic table. Then, Hongthai and Sovann counted the periodic table in order. Moreover, there was another surprising event that day. We bought several chocolates for the lucky draw but there was one chocolate left and the MCs, Khichhay and Sovann, decided to ask the audience whether anyone would like to show off their talents on stage. Vong Heang, an 8-B student, came to the stage and performed a rap which was amazing. Finally, at the end of the show, we ended with a Turkish song, ‘Insanlik El Ele’, which was sung by 8-A class. At the end of the show, all of us, together with the audience, took some pictures. Some of us took pictures with

parents. Right after that, we had a drink service and we all went to the front of the school to drink some juice. Our teacher and assistant teacher promised to buy us icecream after we had finished the show. So, as an 8-A class, we went upstairs to the canteen to eat ice-cream together. We had many unforgettable moments. We really enjoyed it. We learned and earned a lot of experience. We would like to thank our school for allowing us and all the students to show their great skills and talents. We are all looking forward to having another Class Day Party as soon as possible. At the end of the performance, some of us discussed our opinions about the day. For instance, Thanak: ‘I’m honored to have been a part of the event. It was one of the best days of my life and I’ll never forget it.’ Hongthai: ‘First of all, I would like to thank the school for letting us show our talents. Then, I would like to thank everybody who was a part of this event because they are my friends and they put in a lot of effort.’ Seuchung: ‘It was simply great. Our Farewell Trip to Siem Reap It hit us hard when we got approved from the school administration on this Siem Reap trip or I can say our last trip together. I guess some of us including me were so excited the day before, that we couldn’t even sleep. On the first day, the 20th February of 2016, we all had to wake up early since the bus had to leave at 5 am. We prepared some snacks and food to eat on the bus together. It took us 6 hours to reach Siem Reap and check in at Tanei Resort & Hotel. After checking in, we rested a bit before setting off to eat our lunch. Then we went to the culture village and enjoyed our night shopping at the night market. The second day came and we started off the day by going to Preah Ong Jek and Preah Ong Jom to pray for good blessing. And then we went to Angkor Wat, spent half of the day there, and took lots of pictures before we went to have lunch. After that, we toured around the Angkor Wat area till 6:00 pm. For the last dinner of this memorial trip, we decided to have BBQ and stick ice cream 46

later on. On the way back to the hotel, we danced and sang happily in the bus together. On the last day, the 22nd of February 2016, we departed from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh after lunch at 1:00pm. We spent the last moment of our trip together by filming videos and taking picture. We arrived at Phnom Penh at 8:00 pm and went home on our own. I have to say that this is the most significant trip that we have ever had together and it will last in my memory forever. Last but not least, I want to tell my junior that they should spend their last moment preciously with their classmates before high school ends because we can only experience it once.

Awards Dinner with General Director On 19th December 2015, Zaman International School invited my family for dinner. It's not just me; it's all the Genius and I-Sweeep competitors. It took place at the Icon Building which includes our school head office. The place was really nice and very comfortable. There were temple arts hanging in the hall way with a glorious golden frame. In this event Mr Ejder Kilic, Zaman International Schools General Director, and Mr. Gurkan Çil, our school principal, made a speech about our success and motivated us to keep up the hardwork. But an interesting part was our school history; how big Zaman community was. I did learn a lot from both their advices and compliments. It was a really nice dinner with friends, families, our Zaman teachers and staff which made a cool memory for all of us. Lastly, I would like to thank the school for inviting us out for dinner and for the generous gifts.

2nd Place at Asia Youth Cup S I N G A P O R E

This was the second time that a Zaman team had joined an international tournament. Many different countries were represented on the field, such as Malaysia and Australia. Our team did really well and played some excellent games, securing the 2nd place medals to show-off back home. Name: Choo Kimsinawath Class: 12A

Going to Singapore is one of best experiences I have ever had. It was fun and I enjoyed my time there. The whole city was clean. Since Singapore is a fine city, I was afraid of getting fined for not obeying their strict laws. The football match was very challenging. We were the only International School that joined the tournament. Beside us, they were all experienced football teams and schools. We tried our best but in the end we got 2nd place. We were happy anyway because there were some very difficult matches against the other teams. The football field could be seen as a baseball field. After the match we went sightseeing around their famous shopping street, “Orchard Street”. Even though, it was an enormous area, all shopping malls were filled with people. One of our most memorable moments was that we couldn’t find a place to sit in the food court when we bought our food. Then we had to split into two groups. The first group bought the food while the second group looked for some seats. In conclusion, it was a very exciting trip and I would like to go there again.

Name: Rada Rofek Class: 10A

We really appreciated all the work that had been done in order to allow us to participate in this great tournament in Singapore. First of all, we would like to thank our coach, Mr. Cihan Kazanci, for taking care of us and spending this memorable time with us. Though we didn’t expect to come in the 1st place, we were both thrilled and relieved to know that we came in the 2nd place. All of the hard work we put in definitely paid off because we knew we would have regretted for not trying our best. It wasn’t an easy tournament as we were challenged against different clubs from several countries who were competent players themselves. I really enjoyed it and I hope thatnext year I will be able to join in a similar tournament again. Once again thanks to everybody for supporting us!

Girls’ Football Team Champions

The Human Rights Day Tournament was a huge success. Our team had low expectations however their hard work and determination was evident as they were continuously victorious, taking first place. Well done, girls!

Name: Chanmeymey Class: 8E

Recently there was a football match, last Thursday, at the Emperial Sports Club and there were so many schools that joined the match. I felt really excited for that match. The first match was so wonderful but I was so tired afterwards. The CIA school organised this match and there were about 100-150 students there at the field. YEAH! We won that match and we got first place. We all tried our best to help each other to win that match too.

Name: Amie Lim Class: 8E

When I first heard about the Human Rights Day tournament, my heart was racing in my chest. As the day arrived, if you had asked me how I felt during the tournament, there were no words to describe the particular type of feeling. Letting pure excitement virally spread through me, through my body. Of course, I felt fear shivering through me, the fear of losing, fear of letting my team down. This fear of mine won’t take me down, I learnt to conquer and vanquish my fear. I’m happy we won the tournament, we all tried our best, sweat all over our bodies, but we didn’t give up at all.

ZIS Basketball Team Tournament Day through the team’s new strategy and Hope’s game slowly started to deteriorate. With the help of Captain Sinawath, Chhun (Tournament MVP-Most Valuable Player), Eric, Chris and Hoklay, the team staged one of the greatest comebacks of all time, scoring 18 points in the last 12 minutes to win 25-21. This The Chimeras would meet Logos in their 1st match, was the icing on the cake for Zaman and both team easily beating them 26-16. This gave the team a and coach were overwhelmed. A great day for the confidence boost going into our 2nd game. Howev- Zaman Chimeras! er, the tournament schedule would see us play back-to-back games with little rest and recovery Congratulations to: Sinawath Chou, David Lim, Chtime. This contributed to our 2nd game loss to ISPP, hun Lim, Alan Lim, Hao Taing, Wei Lin, Hoklay Tan, 39-22. The whole team was extremely exhausted, Yun Lin, Chris Reach, Darapiseth Chan, Chhean Vann but never gave up, giving everything they could. A and Sengthai Hay for their outstanding effort and dedication throughout the tournament. highly commendable effort on their part. The Zaman Chimeras played in their first competitive tournament on the weekend of Feb 13th. The tournament was held at Hope International School and consisted of 4 teams: Hope, Logos, ISPP and Zaman.

With 2 hours break time until our final game, we had some well-deserved rest and recovery. This gave the team the energy we needed to face Hope, who had been undefeated so far, and favorites to win the tournament. They beat ISPP, 13-12 in their 1st game, and Logos 28-6 in their 2nd game. The Chimeras Coach had to rethink his strategy, and come up with a last-minute game plan that would help Zaman to their greatest victory to date.

Coming up in March, there will be another tournament being held with the State Schools. This will be a knockout tournament, and Zaman will be registering both boys and girls teams for the event. Please see Mr. Malcolm for further information on training days and registration process.

The first half started slowly and Zaman was down 14-7 at the break. Hope started to show weakness
