ACTIVITY Yes. Some surprises are waiting for our students next Summer Festival. For instance, they will have more time to play each game. 15.What are the advantages of this summer festival for the students? First of all, the students take a break from an intensive tempo of the school and enjoy the games. Moreover, they can socialize by playing together with the students from different classes. Finally, they get closer with their teachers. 16.If you're going to rate the outcome of the festival, which range between 1-10 will you choose, considering 10 is the highest?

Continued from page 1 I cannot mention solely one name because it was a team effort which includes all the female teachers of our school. 10.Who prepared all the foods and drinks? In addition to the games, our dedicated female teachers prepared foods for their students. Some responsible students brought the drinks. Plus Mrs. Asiye, Mrs. Rabia,, Mrs Sevghur and our supervisors Miss Merve and Miss Serife

There were a lot of visitors that were interested in our game because they love to draw and some of them just came for candies (laughing) but their paintings were very nice. Each one of them was really good and very creative and there were lots of winners. The winner got 2 or 3 candies and the ones who were lost also got a candy. We had lots of fun on that day. We also wish that we could have this kind of activity for the next academic year. Thanks a lot!” RACHNY AND SALIHA “For next summer festival, I hope that there will be more enjoyable games, funny games. And each game sould last at least 30 minutes. There will be more delicious foods. And there will be some games like: - song contest - drama/ sketch contest - bicycle race - running race... etc... Also the shirt will have a better design than this year. I hope everyone will enjoy with next year Summer Festival. Thank you!” Visoth Thida Continued on page 3

ACTIVITY Continued from page 2 “ We l l , t h i s y e a r i s t h e f i r s t Summer Festival so we really enjoyed those games. There were many games to play such as Musical Chair, Tomato Dance, Basket shooting, Funny MakeUp, Sack Race, etc... While we were playing Sack Race, we suddenly fell over each others. Those games were pretty exciting. Although we didn't win any prizes one of our friends won a Barbie Doll. We really appreciated this Summer Festival and we hope that there will be another Summer Festival next year. Thanks!” JESSICA AND BORAMEY “We were responsible for foods, we sold Khmer traditional desserts. There were many people that came and bought our food, they loved it so much. We were very glad to sell the foods. We are looking forward for the second Summer Festival next year. Thank you!” Chorly and Thida “We really enjoyed the Festival, This is the first time we have celebrate the Summer Festival and it was very exciting. We

enjoyed playing games; the best part had to be the food because there were many different kinds of food. However, it was a really hot morning and some games were very crowded so it was hard to join. We hope next year we c a n c e l e b r a te th i s s u m m e r festival the whole day because this year we didn't have enough time to participate in the games and our tickets were left behind. Thank you!” Vichta and Julie “I felt tired but I was very happy to join because there were many people that came to my stall (laughing). One of my friends said she was happy to meet many people and she felt very tired after the games. Even though we were really exhausted but it was worth the time that we had spent there. After the festival, we were so glad because all the number that we had in our box were all sold out. It wasn't what we'd expected earlier. We're definitely going to join the next Summer Festival next year!” Dory

As a result, we've seen that the Summer Festival was another great achievement of Zaman International School. Even thouth if it was the first festival in our school all the teachers and students were very satisfied with

the outcome of what they had d o n e . We a r e e x p e c t i n g t o celebrate another Summer Festival next year with our friends, teachers and family again for the second time. Written by Sithyna and Bopha

Science Project Competition This is the second year for the science project competition. The final elimination was held at Zaman International School on 12 of April 2008. In order to know more detail about the competition, 11F had an interview with Mr. Murat. Below are some of the interesting questions. -What is the purpose of preparing the science project competition? The aim is to let the students have a part in preparing the project, by letting them find the project and materials, preparing the materials and finding a way to do and try to understand how it works themselves. The teachers only gave some small advice to them, so this would improve the student's motivation toward education and also help them to think with in a scientific way and learn scientific methods. -How many projects joined the c o m p e ti ti o n ? H o w d i d th e y eliminate it? Who were the judges? At the beginning there were totally 50 projects. In the first elimination, the subject teachers eliminated some of the projects and choose only 5 projects for each subject, so in the final round there were only 20 projects from 4 subjects (Mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology). There were 7 judges, they are all science teacher: Mr. Murat, Mr.

G u r k a n , M s . Ya s e m i n , M s . Serap, Mr. Yasin, Mr. Selmani, and Mr. Mustafa. -What were the factors that the judges evaluated on? There were 5 important factors for the judges to evaluate. The first thing was the display Board (30points). They didn't only look at the decorating, but also the detail. Second was the Explanation (35 points). They tried to find out whether the students understood their project well or just reading from the p a p e r. A n o t h e r f a c t o r w a s Demonstration (30 points), the judges wanted to know if the project was hand made by the competitors or just bought it from somewhere. By the way, the judges asked some questions and if the competitor made could answer them very well he/ she would get 35 points. The last thing was practicality (20 points), this part was evaluated on the work of the project that would be useful in everyday life. -Who were the 3 winners for this competition? After a hard decision by the judges, the first place was awarded to a student from 11E who got points. The second p l a c e w a s g i v e n t o a 11 F student, Chea Nalin, who got points. The third winner was... from 11B, who was the only boy in the top 3.

-What were the improvements or changes from last year? There were many improvements, because last year was the first time that the school held this kind of competition, so that the students didn't understand this competition very well. And also the some of the project last year were very simple, but this year was different. The students had more experience, they worked harder. Some of them worked very hard to find the information for their project without depending on their teacher much. This year it was well organized. -Are there any plans for next year

Science Project Competition? In order to challenge our students, we will let the students compete with outside schools and give a chance to other school's students to participate in this competition. We plan to make a Science Project Competition in Phnom Penh for next year, but for now it's just a plan. -Mr. Murat's advise for students, who want to prepare to do a better project next year: For these past two years, the students have done their work quite well, but improvements will always be needed year by year. Preparation is the most important part. The students should start to prepare their projects one or two month before the competition. They also should collect the data for the project from many sources, which will help them understand the project from different points of view. Here are the descriptions from the 1st winner about her project: Our project is really simple but useful. This project is about a Pot in pot refrigerator. The fridge made up of two pots; one is big and the other one is small. We use six pots of different sizes to make different spaces between each pot as we wanted to test whether the space affects the temperature or not. We filled the space with three different kinds of sand and added water in it. Finally, we put some vegetables in it to observe the length it can be presented and covered the top part with dampened cloth. Continued on page 5

4 June 2008

ACTIVITY Continued from page 4 The temperature inside the pot was 4°c lower than outside because of water vaporization reaction. When the water evaporates, it absorbs the heat from the inner pot as it is an endothermic reaction. Also the beach sand showed greatest result.

succeed in this competition is that you have to be sure what subject you do and try to find as many kinds of information about your project. The hardest part of my project is I have to remember all the algorithms and all of them were similar to each other. It was really confusing. However, that's not all. Another part was that all the rotation has their own symbol. In order to rotate it fast, you had to automatically know which way you were rotating. Finally I want to thank my classmates, for their support.

I think our project will play a vital role in developing countries, especially in our country. As we know the massive majority of our country can't access electricity. This has ruined many family lives. Our project will help them to keep their food, get rid of disease, develop education plus This is the word from third winner: increase family income. logo has been changed, and this year it was designed by a student from boy side. This year, we didn't have so many problems to deal with like last year because most of the problems had been solved. For instance, last year we faced losing control of students, there were too many students including the presenters. That's the reason why we had to decrease the amount of duty students. Even though most of the problems had been solved, we still have some obstructions such as the place: there were many visitors that came from public schools and our place was too

As for the visitors, some teachers said that “I liked the fair; unfortunately some projects are same as last year. Anyway, I still congratulated the students for this well prepared fair. ” In addition, Mr San Chhay, our mathematics teacher also stated that “It was superior, because students could understand better about science's end, it enables the students to do researches from lessons and experience in the real world or can use some of those works in real life. The fair keeps on improving from one year to another.” M r. Ya s i n E r d e m , b i o l o g y teacher, claimed that “It was wonderful. All the plans had been prepared a month before. I was so happy and proud to see that the fair was well organized. I believe that next year the fair will even be better. And I'm looking forward to it.” Followed by Mr. Phirun Meas who believed that, “It was good, most students understood well about the theory of the projects, this is a so called another unique way of studying because there aren't any private schools that host a fair like this.” Mrs Khema Tout added that this year's Science Fair was as successful as last years in but most of the games had been too easy; she expected more brain thinking should be included. ACTIVITY Continued from page 6 Mr. Selmani Yazaci said that tomorrow's scientist demonstrated their skills and proved their capacity. The visitors were amazed with tens of different experiments and shows as well as the wellorganized boards. This was a successful outcome of studentteacher cooperation and the fruits of hard and disciplined work. In addition, Mr. Mustafa Dur, our chemistry teacher admitted that this year Science Fair was very good compared to last year. After the chemistry department, we think that we did a wonderful job with the help of our students. If I say the chemistry section was the most interesting part of the fair, I think I wouldn't be exaggerating. For each and every year, we are getting more experienced therefore, next year we hope that we will raise the level and prepare another nice fair for the audience. To sum up, I congratulate every teacher and student for their hard work on the fair. It was a wonderful time for all of us. Mr. Murat Tutumlu himself also remarked that “This year is better than last year. Though the system was the same it was another success of our school. Actually, all the projects were very interesting and every table had a lot of visitors, however it was shown that some of physics and chemistry tables were the most crowded.” In conclusion, our 2008 Science Fair was accomplished very smoothly with the help of Mr. M u r a t Tu t u m l u a n d M r E l . Sophea along with other teachers. And special thanks to all the subject teachers that helped each student managed their projects very well. Afterward all the work that has been done, we are so grateful because we have received many positive comments. We welcomed to receive all of the feedback. We would like to thank Mr. Murat Tu t u m l u f o r s p e n d i n g h i s precious time having the interview which told us the details of the 2008 Science Fair. We are hoping to see that our fourth annual Science Fair will be as successful as this year's. Written by: 11F

Zaman's Family Zaman International school was opened in 1997. The school was located in #31, st 71, sangkat Boeung Keng Kong 1, khan Chamkarmon, Phnom Penh. The school started with only 2 students. After many years of operating in Cambodia, Zaman international School has increased its enrolment of students amazingly. From Year to year, hundred of students register with ZIS. With the support of students families, our school opened the new campus in January 2006 with many honorable guests. The new building is located at #2843, st 3, sangkat Tonle Basak, khan Chamkarmon. Nowadays, ZIS has 682 students (330 girls and 352 boys), and 66 teachers (22 part-time teachers, 20 full-time teachers and 14 club teachers). Because of the teachers and students, a huge family of Zaman International School was formed. The students are very close to each other and they spend most of their time together, and they study together, enjoy their lunch together, and share their feelings and secrets together, and many more things. Not only we have happy times, but we also have had some tough times with each other. We seem like siblings more than friends. Not only between students and student but also between students and teachers, they communicate very well. Teachers provided knowledge as much as they can to the students, and they take care of them very well. They teach us how to live independently and behave well etc. They seem like the students' parents or guides, that's why the students called them The Second Parents. Students initially don't notice that ZIS formed a family like this, and they didn't know how deep and strong this family is. One day, they will learn it and know how much value this family has. Even when students have left or graduated, they are still Zaman's family. By the amount of the new students entering each year, graduated students and the 682 students this year, Zaman's family will become larger and larger. One day, Zaman's family will become the largest family in Asia with a state motto “ YOU'RE GOING TO REACH THE TOP WITH US ”. Staying 9 hours as a community. Do you think we seem like a huge family in this society? A true friend is hard to find Is always in the mind Is one of a kind. A true friend is someone like you That I found inside this school. On the 1st of March 2008, there was a performance which is performed by 11f. This performance is called as 11F's Class Day. This performance was started from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and it took place at ZIS conference hall. In that occasion we

invited all of 11F's parents and all the teachers who teach us but we sold the tickets for students in girl side. The prize of each ticket was 1$. We had planned to sell the ticket to all of the girl-side students in ZIS but unfortunately the seats were not enough for all

the students in girl side, so we just sold approximately 80 tickets. For this occasion, we nearly had 10 days to practice before the performance. It seemed to be so short for us but we tried our best for our class day.

In the performance, many shows were played, such as Tr a d i t i o n a l F a s h i o n S h o w, Songs, Slide Shows, and Drama. First, our 2 presenters greeted the guest and started singing the national anthem. Then, a group of students sang a Khmer song which was written by His Majesty King NORODOM SIHAKNOUK. After that, we started our Fashion Show which described about the color of the day. Along with this fashion show, our presenters also explained about the meaning of the color of each day in Khmer and English to the guests. “Traditional programs had passed, it was time to change our program into modern programs.” this was what one of the presenter said. Turkish and English songs were sung. 2 slide shows which were made by 11F were played. One of them was about 11-F's family and other was about our 11f's members. Drama role was about Zaman's student's life, but it was a funny drama. Not only these programs were showed, but also surprising and enjoyable games were also performed. At that time, every guest was very excited. Before the end of the performance, the whole 11F class sang 2 songs, first was about parents and the other song was about 11F class which called as “11F Relationship”, these songs were written by 11F. At the end of performance, there were also snacks and drinks for the entire guests who came. F i n a l l y, o u r p e r f o r m a n c e finished successfully. We would like to say thanks to Zaman International School, which gave 11F an opportunity to make this class day up.
