In just the seventeen years Brookhaven Academy senior, Jacie Douglas has been on this earth, a whopping thirteen of those years have been spent cheering, which Douglas quickly developed a passion for. Parents Jason and Leslie Douglas encouraged her every step of the way, providing her with support and instilling in her a work ethic from the start. Beginning her cheerleading journey at PowerHouse Allstars, she continued there until 2015. Mississippi Spirit, a new all star cheerleading gym in town opened that spring and Douglas attended open gyms and found her new gym home. Over the course of the next few years, Douglas would compete on two teams at Mississippi Spirit every year, usually one team as a flyer and one as a base, proving her versatility and ability to do any stunt position. She has had multiple hit zero performances at The Summit, ranked nationally with her teams various consecutive seasons, and even received cash prizes at events for scoring so well on Individual "Best Cheerleader" competitions. Douglas began cheering for the Brookhaven Academy Cougars her sophomore year and developed a whole new love for the sport, retaining and applying all the information she could could about sideline cheerleading. During that time, she also began coaching at Mississippi Spirit in addition to her two all star teams and school cheerleading.

Being a captain or in any type of leadership position isn't always he most glamorous role to play or place to be. It takes confidence, experience, patience, understanding and compassion When observing the young women who are in leadership roles amongst these teams, those qualities can be blatantly exemplified, which will be a massive component in their team's individual success. The road to being given these responsibilities came with years of preparation and dedicating themselves to this sport.

Over in the land of the blue and gold, Bogue Chitto senior Aynslee Butler can reflect on a lifetime spent involved in all star cheerleading, attending multiple classes and practices weekly at Mississippi Spirit bettering herself as an athlete. Butler has also been an essential part of Bobcat cheerleading from peewee to both years of junior high and all four years of high school..Though mild mannered, Butler doesn't mind taking charge when their is a goal in her mind. Coming from a long line of diehard Bobcats (which includes coach/cousin Blaine Myers), Butler leads with maturity and a genuine sense of understanding

BHS senior and captain Kathleen Jackson is no stranger to what this sport entails, also having grown up in all star cheerleading, first at Gym of Dreams then later Mississippi Spirit. She is goal driven and is very involved when coordinating plans of action for the team with coach Stevie Ann Leggett.

One of the two captains for West Lincoln this season is senior Denise Davenport, who has also dedicated a great deal of her younger years to all star cheerleading before transitioning to school and cheering for the Bears in 7th grade. Dedra Edwards, West Lincoln's coach, gives praise to both captains and commends their ability to work together so well.

Loyd Star's head coach, Allyson Barry also sings the praises of her senior captain this year, Jenna Smith while applauding her entire group of seniors and junior captain, Abby Burnett. Although taking one year off, Jenna Smith has been a member of the Hornets cheer team every year.

Not only do these young ladies have to delegate decision making regarding formations, stunt groups, gameday procedures, pep rally planning and other duties, they have to maintain solid

grades while in one of the most important years of high school and prepare for all the changes that will be thrust upon them next year when entering their first year of college. Many of them also participate in either all star cheerleading or tumbling, as well as are members of other sports teams for their respective schools, including basketball, softball, soccer and track. They must also remember that they are ambassadors of their school, putting them in a very important place, which is being a role model to so many that aspire to be like them one day. For Wesson senior and captain, Emma Thaxton, that is something she holds very close to her heart. Thaxton is the niece of Brittany Thaxton Harveston, who owns and operates Elite Performance and Tumble in Brookhaven. This is where Emma is also a coach and spends a lot of her time mentoring, teaching, and

helping young athletes fall in love with the sport that she loves. She wholeheartedly understands how much good a positive influence it can be for a younger child.

At Lawrence County High School, senior Ann Clark Van is known to have a smile on her face and always ready for a photo op with a little Cougar.. Van also remembers that by being a cheerleader, you also take on the job of role model. In addition to leading her cheer team, Van is an honor student and a multi sport athlete, playing tennis and winning district for girls doubles with fellow LC cheerleader, Adyson Parks. in 2022.

To be a leader, one must exhibit accountability and responsibility, be self motivated and promote team work always. Cheerleading truly encapsulates TRUST and having faith in that your team mates will be there to catch you when you fall, figuratively and literally. Each one of our standout seniors mentioned have represented these qualities in one way or another and have made a lasting impact on their team mates in a positive way. Like mentioned earlier, sometimes being viewed as “captain” or “team leader” can almost be seen as a negative thing, because higher expectations will be demanded of you. But for these individuals, the challenge was accepted and we can’t wait to see what the rest of their senior seasons hold.

Taking on the role of a role model is one that comes with the territory. Emma Thaxton is definitely looked up to by many Ann Clark Van loves seeing all the little dgirls ressed in their red and black supporting the Cougars

COUGARS BACK ON TRACK FOR A STRONG SEASON

Back for year #2 under Amy Spring's leadership, Cougars are ready to roar.

Dressed in their. finest Cougar blue and white, coming to a sideline near you this football season are none other than your Cougar Varsity cheerleaders 20 athletes strong, the team has a variety of different levels of experience amongst the roster, with some having grown up from a very young age involved in all star cheerleading while others have joined in on the fun in later years, making a refreshing array of talents spread across the team. Brookhaven Academy has always had multi talented girls who play a variety of sports for the Cougars, so arranging schedules can present a challenge in itself, but head coach Amy Spring always makes sure her squad gets the necessary preparation time, and this year is no different. Spring is a veteran coach in cheerleading, having spent many years as Brookhaven High School's coach. This is her second season to coach the Cougars and it has been interesting to see her bring her flair, perception and understanding of the sport to the girls

for another strong year.

2022 CAMP

Spring begins her second season coaching the Cougar Varsity cheer team. She has an extensive past in coaching that spans over a decade, having formerly coached the Varsity squad at Brookhabven High School

Opting to attend camp very early in the summer, the Cougars had little time to prepare before heading off to UCA camp in late May This meant all athletes needed to exhibit strong focus and team work, which they did and gave a solid final camp day performance for family and friends

Sirens of the Sidelines

Spring has been proactive in implementing positive changes to Cougar cheer when she took over last year, doing away with some of the older material in favor of new sideline dances, as well as incorporating more stunt work to keep the crowd involved and the boys motivated to win the game Some highlights to look forward to for Cougar fans are the Blackout pep rally, and of course, the Homecoming pep rally which traditionally has the Varsity and junior high performing routines and material together These girls also put a strong emphasis on cheering and supporting Cougar basketball as well

Class of '23, '24 and '25 all coming with strengths

Something that can be viewed as a major strength for the Cougars is the incredible chemistry shared by the seniors.

Jacie Douglas, Charlie Ann Carr and Izzy Nelson are longtime cheerleaders and work harmoniously with the newer senior cheerleaders, as well as Coach Amy Spring. , The junior class boasts a solid and skilled group of ladies, including Anna Rai Cline, Carmen Lambert and new student at BA, ;La'Sadria Stewart. Incoming sophomores all bring something to the table, like Macy McDaniel with her extensive dance background and Taylor Douglas who is an awesome tumbler and has beautiful skills in the air as a flyer.

It's looking like this season for the Cougars is shaping up to be the year of a culmination

of unique talent and determined mindset. Which I think we all can agree... It's Cougarrrific!

PANTHER VARSITY COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS TO STEP ON KING FIELD

This prestigious program strenthens old traditions an prepars to unveil new ones.

Stevie Ann Leggett approaches her fourth season in the position of head coach for the mighty Panthers, but she is no stranger to Brookhaven High School, nor is she a stranger to knowing what it takes to achieve greatness. A 2010 graduate and former cheerleader for this program, she was an absolute phenomenon as an athlete and knows exactly what it takes to get to the top. This is one of the very reasons that make Leggett an amazing coach and the answer to relighting the fire on Brookhaven High School cheerleading Throughout summer months, the squad had multiple weekly practices preparing for UCA camp, including learning new material for gameday sitatuions, drilling stunt technique, improving flexibility

and jumps, as well as preparing multiple elements for their gameday routine for the MHSAA State competition in Jackson in December.

Leggett has an extensively impressive background in cheerleading and is assisted this season by Madison Foster Their combined experience has already proved successful in leading the team and preparing them for the season

Panthers ready gameday routine for State cheer competition in December

The Panthers have been in preparation for the MHSAA State Cheerleading Championship since their summer practices began, but for head coach Stevie Ann Leggett, plans for the routine started long before. She doubles as choreographer, putting her many years of cheerleading experience to work. Leggett also coaches all star cheerleading at Mississippi Spirit. Leggett began researching before tryouts even began on the elements she wanted to include and incorporate into their competition routine, which will be debuted before they head to Jacksonto compete in December.

In the past few seasons, especially the last two or three, West Lincoln has put a much bigger emphasis on the production of a pep rally, including material and music catered to the pep rally's specific theme jazzing up their uniform to also fit the theme, and incorporating games to keep student body, teachers, and family and friends engaged for the entirety of the pep rally It has been confirmed that the squad will get to put on three pep rallies for football season, including one for the first home game, one for Homecoming and one for the last home game which will also double as Senior Night. A former Bobcat cheerleader herself, Blaine heads into this season with experience and a love for BC that is genuine and true She has implemented multiple components in making this program such a strong one, including making gameday a performance for her squad Their use of props, stunts and impressive choreography keeps the crowd involved from beginningtoendofthegame.

The atmosphere is so exciting On game day, the student body dresses in blue and gold or for the theme. We have pep rallies for the first game, each home game, and postseason games and will have a few practices a week to prepare for those. I have girls that run with flags and tumble ahead of the team. The Voice of the Bobcats, my daddy, Mickey Myers’ voice resounds over the loudspeaker. I have such fond memories as a child of the feeling of excitement of FNL at Troy Smith. My mama (Karen), my sister (Brooke), & I have all cheered on these sidelines. I have cheerleaders whose parents and grandparents either cheered or played on the gridiron at BC. Being able to carry on the same timeless traditions now as a coach is a true blessing," Myers says when speaking of her adoration for the blue and gold. Her squad, which is comprised of 24 girls, is sprinkled with seasoned veterans of the sport like seniors Aynslee Butler and Kassidi Watts and junior, Maggie Wilson, as well as a slew of eager and talented rookies and underclassmen. HORNETS SPIRITS ARE HIGH FOR FOOTBALL SEASON

Loyd Star is back with a new coach and is ready to set a new standard in Hornet cheerleading.

when new head coach, Allyson Barry took over the reigns of Loyd Star cheerleading before tryouts, she knew that she

wanted to set a precadent and make her first year one to remember. "We have had early morning practices where we have put in the work to be the best Loyd Star has seen," Barry said of how she prepared her squad to attend UCA Camp, as well as prepare for the coming football season. It definitely hasn't been all smooth sailing though, as Barry stated " We have overcome injuries early this season from a broken foot to and fractured arm and more. We are

a young and athletic squad. Many of our girls are multi sport athletes, especially our juniors. Most of them can also be seen on the basketball court, softball field, or soccer field. We were extremely impressed with some outstanding girls that showed their leadership skills from the first practice." Some of those that have displayed strong l eadership skills

With a group of veterans leading the squad, the potential and talent level of the athletes is dispersed all throughout the respective grades. The junior class features Riley Thornton, who is an exceptional trick flyer, Madison Altman, who is one of the most skilled bases for the Hornets and Abby Burnett, who is versatile in flying and now basing as well. The sophomore Hornet cheerleaders are represented by 3, all of which are newer to th esport but exhibit much potential and talent. Lyndsey Fortenberry, Jaiden Claire, Allison Etheridge and Micah Claire Lowe are some of the standout freshmen athletes, but the entire Freshmen class is strong and bring something to the table.

With preparing for football season, also comes pep rally planning and the girls of Loyd Star have been brainstorming with Coach Allyson and Amber. Barry is stepping into the role Clara Freeman held for decades. Freeman, who is a veteran in the sport and still works for Varsity Spirit, cultivated the program into the powerhouse that it is today coaching generations of Hornet cheerleaders. She was assisted in recent years by Zachary Cain. While she has some big shoes to fill, Barry feels confident she can rise to the occasion. "Our girls are extremely excited for pep rallies this year. We have many ideas and can’t wait for our student body to see! Our favorite tradition is the Possum Bowl. It has been a tradition for years, and it is ALWAYS the game of the year," Barry says of the infamous pep ally for the Possum Bowl where Loyd Star plays Bogue Chitto Barry also stated, "As a cheer coach you have a certain level of expectation and responsibility to provide each girl with your best, and Amber and myself have put everything we have into our girls this year We hope that it shows! " Enthusiastic and passionate, Barry is already proving that she has what it takes to lead this thriving program.

he Yellow Jackets are hopeful and confident for the strongest season in years and we love to see it. After having

The squad received game day prep work and stunt and pyramid incorporations last season from Molly Hennington and Zachary Cain. "I will mention that at the beginning of the summer, we made it a goal for every cheerleader on the team to perfect their toe touch. Though it may seem small, each girl worked hard and were able to complete the task to perfection. I am so proud of them," Haralsan says when discussing

some early goals she set for her team.. The squad, which is led by the trio of seniors, captain Alley Honea and Christalynn Rowley and Alyssa Thames and junior co captain, Gracie Williams, is enthusiastic about the goals they aspire to reach this season. Enlisting the staff of UCA for camp this summer, the days were hot, long and grueling, but it definitely paid off with the squad feeling more than prepared for football season, pep rallies and for the sidelines. They received stunt instruction, which is something theyd like to do more of this season. Captain and senior cheerleader, Ally Honea also received UCA All American chosen by the UCA staff, which is an honor with many potential opportunities like marching in the Macy's parade in London, or representing your school at Walt Disney World.

"We are an energetic group that is willing to push ourselves to the limits," Haralson says with confidence when discussing Enterprise Varsity. She also commended the dedication and time put in by their mascot, "walking in unison with the girls every step." While Haralson says that the student body is great at pep rallies when supporting, she would like to see more involvement from upperclassmen like the juniors and seniors. "Our elementary and middle school really show up and show out Their energy is contagious and game days are exciting."

COBRAS ARE READY TO STRIKE IN 2022

Expecations are high for another top notch season for Wesson Varsity

Cobras arelarge and in charge again ready to get this season jump started. "I love seeing

them all fill up the track on Friday Nights,” longtime coach Michelle Berch says. Berch has been the head coach for the Cobras for a number of years, even having her daughter as a member of her team a few seasons back. The squad, which features skilled and solid upperclassmen like Emma Thaxton, Marley Channell, Linda Grace Dunn and Stevie Rayne Westrope also has stellar underclassmen like Courtney Carr and Sydnee Westrope. Another thing you can expect from the Cobras is strong pep rallies and routines specifically for each weeks themes.

Some of the themes from last year were throwback, pink out and neon, with the pink pep rally in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, featuring a stellar routine to a mashup of Madonna's "Material Girl" and the classic "Diamonds are aGirl's Best Friend."

The Cobras did a home camp with UCA this summer, and a camp specificall designated for pep rally choreography.

With a love for her athletes, the school and the entire Cobra community, Berch is the right leader for this program.

The Cobra Varsity did a home camp this summer, and it was an awesome experience for all, making the athletes feel prepared for the season and allowing tthe team to form bonds with one another, which is crucial for any team EIGHT Cobra awarded All American. So much talent in this program.

LC COUGARS BACK WITH STRONGEST ROSTER IN YEARS

Years of hard work culminating into this dynamic and skilled team

D talent and athletes with potential that make up the roster of varsity cheerleaders, but there is something electric about this particular group of girls. Perhaps the combined experience and leadership skills of longtime cheerleaders like seniors Adyson Parks, Ann Clark Van and Reagan and Rylea Carney, the "twin power" of flyers Kylie and Kassidy Smith and Brooke and Braci Conn, and the addition of strong underclassmen like Ari Davis and Kennedy Sandifer all contribute to this sentiment that the Cougars are gearing up for a season to remember They opted for a home camp this

own in Lawrence County at Lawrence County High School, there is consistent

summer with NCA, resulting in a performance that set a solid precedent for the upcoming season, as well as produced a slew of All American cheerleaders from

the Cougars It will be interesting to see how well this surplus of talent will play into what this team will bring to the sidelines and pep rallies

An event in the season of a Lawrence County Cougar Varsity cheerleader that is celebrated as a personal favorite among many of the girls always has to be the infamous Mini Cheer Camp. This special event has had exponential growth since its first year and has became the premier and most prosperous of yearly fundraisers for the LC girls. It also gives the youth of Lawrence County the opportunity to learn fun material, bond with the girls they all look up to and support them while doing so. They already can't wait until next year!

Somethingthatisdefinitelyinteresting about Lawrence County Varsity is not only does the team have THREE set of identical twins on the roster, they have two sets of twins flyers with Kylie and Kassidy Smith, and Brooke and Braci Conn. Reagan and Rylea Carney are both seniors this year and have been a vital part of Cougar cheer for years. All six girls are incredibly talented, and the “twin power” definitely brings somethingsouniquetothetable.

often interesting to think about the duration of other sports specific schedules and

coaches or athletes talk about what they do in their "off season." Another fun fact about cheerleading is that there is no off season and

whole season. Below is a general outline of
