t was amazing to see the great success and attention that the first issue of Gridiron Girls garnered highlighting the eight schools and their respective cheer teams in the area of Lincoln County and some surrounding counties. The response was so overwhelmingly positive and for that, we are so grateful and excited for the future of this publication for many years to come Something we wanted to do in response to that result was to continue our initial mission of the publication and to shed a light on the hard work put in by some more of the high

adventure as a Pioneer cheerleader, as well as returning to the gym she knows as home, Mississippi Spirit after taking two years off. “Madison is a kid that I can always trust to do what is asked of her. She has grown and matured so much over the last few years and she makes me proud daily with the school cheerleading as she became a member of the North Pike Middle School cheerleading team her seventh grade year. She would learn and grow as an athlete before transferring to Parklane Academy her freshmen year. Having felt in a sort of athletic “slump,” this is when Madison’s love for the sport was reignited, with her new to pursue it. For Madison Loper and cheerleading that definitely rang true and that love was fostered by the unwavering support from her mother, Tera McGovern. Beginning her all star cheerleading journey at Gym of Dreams, Madison joined Mississippi Spirit in their first year of being open in 2015 and her adoration and respect for the sport grew with every competition win, tumbling skill mastered or new stunt that she nailed. Madison was very involved in the gym, competing on two teams, one as a flyer and one as a base, displaying her versatility as an athlete, for many seasons. Madison also was introduced to the world of

commences. There are still lots of milestones to be had and memories to be made though for Madison and the Pioneer varsity cheer team and for her all star team, Mississippi Spirit Fire and we can’t wait to see it. We are so proud of this young lady and applaud her contributions to the sport of cheerleading and are pleased to name Madison Jene Loper as the Profile of an Athlete for this issue of Gridiron Girls.

hard work she continues to put in, bettering herself as an athlete," says Zachary Cain, owner and head coach at Mississippi Spirit who has coached Madison for almost a decade now.

Some of Madison’s cheerleading highlights over the past few years are Parklane recently beating North Pike in their football game this year, winning All Star Worlds with Mississippi Spirit in 2022, and getting to know her new teammates this season. Singing with her cheer team, the football team and the band after every game every Friday night, memories made and bonds shared on the sidelines and even practices preparing for pep rallies are among some of the many things Madison will miss about being a Pioneer cheerleader when this season

t's finally here . . . everyone's favorite time of the year: Friday Night Lights. The excitement builds with every hour leading up to Friday and the fun and momentous activities of gameday on the horizon. It's so easy to get caught up in the hussle and bussle of your own traditions and to forget some key points. If you haven't already realized, as a cheerleader, you are in turn a role model. It is your job to represent yourself, your team and your school in a positive light at all times. Actions speak louder than words, and being a leader isn't about the position or the title, it's about truly encompassing what it means in In everything that you do, always try your best to SET the example and not BE the example. Encourage your team mates and peers to rise to the occasion and the expectance of coaches and team leaders, while also making sure you are adhering to those things as well. When you're on the field, in the school hallways, or even readying your lipstick in the bathroom mirror, always remember there is a little girl watching who wants to be just like you one day. Remember that.

A big milestone and great way to kick off the season as a Colonel cheerleader is the annual elementary cheer camp which is held each summer and open to Copiah students. This camp gives all the little Colonels the chance to work with the varsity cheerleaders. It always draws a big crowd and is celebrated by all the kids participating as well as the athletes themselves.
