Intro Profile of the Area d cott R Heps

White Post Ln

Hackney Wick is an area located between London Borough of Hackney and London Borough of Tower of Hamlets in East London. It includes a great number of industrial buildings being transformed into artistic studios contributing to the redevelopment and the growth of the area’s profile along with 2012 Olympic facilities located there. All these parameters synthesize its individual character and empower the area to become a vibrant and growing place for arts and creativity.

The Site

The proposed site is 119 m2 in size and it is a common two storey British brickwork structure. The building is located near Hackney Wick Overground station on the corner of the junction with Hepscott Road and White Post Lane. Since 1995 remains an abandoned and locked but also remarkable site due to the particular graffiti that covers it through these years.

Use

Current & proposed use

The lord Napier building was a historic factory worker’s pub by the 1980’s. The pub closed in 1995 and the building remains empty until now. My proposed plan is to create a space that is attached to the area’s profile and enhances its creative character. The building will become a cloth upcycling workshop space that will help people to remake their clothes and create new ones out of the old ones, on their own.

Opportunities

The proposed plan will carry forward and enhance the notions of teamwork, collaboration, imagination, and creativity. It will also influnce young people to avoid comsumerism and become an inspiration for new and more sustainable ideas in fashion design industry.

Layout of the area Connection of the site with the area

The image shows the relation of the proposed plan between other buildings of the area concerning their use. In addition it supports the connection of the proposed idea with Hackey Wick’s profile.

Concept generation The design of the space has been influenced by the geometry of the surrounding area and its

elements. Geometrical shapes in relevance to the notion and the sign of upcycling lead me to the sacred geometry and the golden section, which played a key role to the generation of the space design and the division of the plan’s layout.

Space division according to the golden ratio.

The main design of the space it is based on a continous line, which defines

the whole area starting from the upper and finishing on the groung level. That line represents the continuity of garment’s life through the age. The principal concept lies on a thread that creates a complete garment. According to the last, I tried with one line, to define an entire space. The feeling of an open space will help the interior to be naturally lit and avoid wasting energy. It will also gives the idea that there are no restrictions, no boundaries in the space. Everything could be moved, change position and be recycled, relating to the ideas of innovative and open-minded people.

Black & white striped floor creates a border line and devides the ground space, while separates the workshop from the whole interior.

Light grey rubber floor defines an area of general use by joining the two entrances.

White reclaimed wooden floor, enhanced with white brick walls, attaches a feeling of clarity, while creates a lighter space appropriate to work.

Reclaimed wooden floor separates the coffee area and creates a cozy space for relaxing.
