JB: In Z33 you combined the pictures of the world fairs with characters from science fiction films... IM: That is a good example of change. At that time the choice was very clear for me. World fairs consist of utopian thinking. The subtitle of Osaka Expo ‘70 is Progress and Harmony for Humankind. That of Expo ‘58 was A world view – A new humanism which shows a very positive belief in the future. In most science fiction films the opposite ideas play an important part, namely that technology will cause our doom. The notion of utopia versus dystopia interested me greatly and I wanted to give meaning to that, or make a statement about it. JB: In Z33 combineerde je de foto’s van de wereldtentoonstellingen met figuren uit sciencefictionfilms... IM: Dat is een goed voorbeeld van verandering. Toen was dat een duidelijke keuze. Wereldtentoonstellingen bestaan uit utopisch gedachtegoed. De ondertitel van Osaka Expo ‘70 is Progress and Harmony for Humankind. Die van Expo ‘58 is Balans der wereld voor een humaner wereld. Dat is een erg positief geloof in de toekomst. In de meeste sciencefictionfilms spelen net tegenovergestelde ideeën een belangrijke rol, namelijk dat we door technologie onze ondergang tegemoet gaan. Utopie versus dystopie, dat interesseerde mij in grote mate en daar wou ik een betekenis aan geven, of een statement over maken.
