ForourNovemberissue,wehavemuchtocelebrateinthisseason ofThanksgiving.Thankfulforarecordturnoutofvotersacrossthe state,theservitudeofourelectedofficials,andthevolunteersthat helpusprovideessentialservicesinthecommunity

Asthankfulasweare,itisalsotheseasonofgiving Wehaveseen historiccutstoSupplementalNutritionAssistanceProgram(SNAP)at thefederallevelandsignificantincreasestohealthcarepremiums acrossthecountry.Nowisthetimetogivebackandsupportyour neighbors.Furtherinthisissue,youwillreadmoreaboutthe Circle of Care Cupboard atYWCAPrincetonandthewraparoundresourceswe areabletoprovideourcommunity,butwecannotdothiswork alone

Collectingitemsforthe Circle of Care Cupboard ismorethanjust helpingyourneighbors,itisacommitmenttolivingthemissionof YWCAPrinceton-toeliminateracism,empowerwomen,and promotepeacejusticefreedomanddignityforall.Thesedonations strengthenthecommunity,fostercompassion,andremindusthat caringforoneanotherisasharedresponsibility Bygiving,you becomepartofanetworkofsupportthatupliftslives,reduces hardship,andcreatesafoundationforahealthier,moreresilient community.

Mercer County, You Did It!

Inthelasteditionof Voices for Justice Iusedthissectiontobegyoualltogetoutto yourpollingplaceandcastyourvote.MercerCounty,youshowedupandshowedout! Voterturnoutwasup10%fromthe2021Gubernatorialelection;thatmeansthatover 20,000voterscasttheirballotinthiselectioninMercerCountyalone!Ifwelookacross thestate,about54%ofregisteredvoterscastaballotinthisyear’sgovernor’srace–that'ssignificantlyhigherthan2021’selectionwhereonlyabout40%ofvoterscasttheir ballot.Almost1millionmoreNewJerseyresidentscasttheirvotethisyearascompared toin2021(thisnumberincludesearlyvotesandmail-inballots)!

IwouldberemissnottomentiontherolethatYWCAPrincetonplayedinhelpingto turnoutthevoteinMercerCounty.Overthepastsevenmonths,YWCAPrincetonhas madeaconcertedefforttobringeducationtothevotersofMercerCounty.

Herearesomeofthehighlightsofourwork:

Wemade5stopsonourvoterregistrationtourinSeptemberandOctober

Our staff traveled up and down the state to attend candidates’ rallies, debates, andspeakingopportunities

We brought our state representatives to our facility to learn more about the essentialworkwedo

We launched a letter writing campaign from parents and staff at The Burke Foundation Early Childhood center to our federal representatives demanding continuedchildcaresubsidies

We placed ads on the corner of Route 206 and Paul Robeson Place, as well as throughPrincetonOnlineurgingPrincetonresidentstovote

During the six months of the election season (May to November), we had 1,864 visitstoourGetouttheVotewebsites!

Whileallofthesenumbersaregreat,wehavemoreworktodo!Nextyearismidterms andwithBonnieWatsonColemanannouncingherretirement,alleyeswillbeonMercer County.Iknowwecangetourvoterturnoutnumbersup.I’mlookingforwardtowriting thisletternextyearwiththesameprideofajobwelldone.

Princeton Town Council and Board of Education

Theresultsofthiselectionshouldcomeas nosurprise;thecandidatesranunopposed IncumbentsMiaSacks(CouncilPresident) andMichellePironeLambroswillretain theirseatsonthecouncil,bothwerefirst electedin2019

ThePrincetonBoardofEducationelection guaranteedtwoincumbentsandafamiliar facewinningtheirelections.SusanKanter andDafnaKendalbothsecuredtheirbids forre-electionmarkingafourthtermfor KendalandathirdforKanter.EricaSnyder wasthetopvotegetteraftercomingup justshyoftheseatlastyear.

Onethingisforsurebasedonthese results,Princetonisentrustingthetown andit’sfutureinthehandsofhighly qualifiedwomen!

State Assembly

Itwasabigyearforincumbentsinthis year’sstateassemblyrace,70ofthestate assemblymemberswillreturntotheir positionsafterJanuary’sinauguration of the80membersofthestateassembly, Democratscurrentlyhaveasupermajority with55representativesinthestate assemblytotheRepublicans’23 Herearea fewofthemajorracesinCentralJersey:

11 District:Inanailbiterracefroma reliableswingdistrict,Democrat incumbentsMargieDonlonandLuanne Peterpaulsecuredthevotesforreelection. th

16 District:ThedistrictthatJack Ciatterelliformerlyrepresentedhasseen lotsofchangethroughoutthelastdecade. DemocratsRoyFreimenandMitchelle Druliswereabletowinreelectioninarace thatspentmorethan$1million!

ClicktoseetheCentral NewJersey Assemblywinners!

Afteratensecampaign,CongresswomanMikieSherrillcameoutontopto winNewJersey’sgubernatorialelection Votersturnedupenmasseinthe largestvoterturnoutinthestatein27years!Inaracethatmanyexperts calledneckandneckinthemonthssincetheJuneprimaries,Sherrillwas abletosecuremorethan400,000votesthanherclosestcompetition,Jack Ciatterelli.SherrillhasalreadymetwithGovernorPhilMurphyandnamedkey staffmemberstohertransitionteam.Theelectionresultsaren’tofficialuntil theNewJerseyBoardofStateCanvassersofficiallyannouncestheresultsand SherrillissworninonJanuary20 ,2026 InterestedinjoiningGovernor-Elect Sherrill’sstaff?Clickthelinkbelowtoseehowyoucancontribute!

What is a “lame duck” session?

NowthatElectionDayisoverandGovernorPhilMurphy’stermisending, weareenteringwhatisknowasthe“lameduck”session.Alameduck sessionisthetimebetweenElectionDayandinaugurationdaywhenan outgoingofficial(Governorinthiscase)experiencesalackofaccountability forlegislationpassedordecisionsmadebecausetheyknowtheycannotbe electedagain.Theystillhaveallthelawmakingpowersoftheiroffice,but canaffordtobeabitcavalierintheirdecisionmakingprocess.Thisisthe timewhentheoutgoingelectedofficialcanmakedecisionsknowingthey won’tbetherefortheconsequences.Hereisalookatsomeofthemost infamouslameducksessiondecisionsfromourfederalgovernment:

The20thAmendment(1933)Frequentlyreferredtoasthe “lameduckamendment,”the20thamendmentmoved inaugurationdayfromMarchtoJanuaryinordertoshorten thelameduckperiodinbetweenelectionsfromsixmonths tofour.Thiswasdonetostrengthentheweightof presidentsandthefederalgovernmentinbetweenelection cycles.

ImpeachmentofBillClinton(1998)Lameducksessions aren’tjustfortheexecutivebranch!In1998,theRepublican controlledHouseofRepresentativestookstepstobring articlesofimpeachmentagainstPresidentBillClintonafter themidtermelections.ClintonwasacquittedbytheSenate, butitbroughtanewwaveofpublicitytothePresident’s affair.

“Don’tAskDon’tTell”Repeal(2010)Theyearis2010, PresidentObamaisinhisfirsttermandmidtermssawthe DemocratslosingtheirmajorityintheHouse.Inalandmark decisionforcivilrights,Congressrepealedthe17-yearold policythatpreventedLGBTQ+servicemembersfromopenly servingintheUSmilitary.Stillstandingtoday,outtroopsno longerhavetohidetheirsexualitywhendecidingtoserve ourcountry.

ColemanisthefirstBlackwomanto representNewJerseyinCongressanda majoradvocateforeducationandcivil rights.AformerTributetoWomenhonoree (2000),wethanktheCongresswomanfor herdedicationtobetteringthelivesof womenandmarginalizedgroupsacrossthe country

OnWednesdayNovember12th,theHouse ofRepresentativespassedlegislationto passthePresident’sproposedspending packagethatwouldreopenthefederal governmentaftertheSenateapprovedthe bill PresidentTrumpsignedthebilllate Wednesdayendingthelongestfederal governmentshutdowninhistory

CongresswomanMikieSherrillgavea goodbyespeechontheHousefloorafter winningtheelectionforgovernor.Shewill officiallyresignearlynextweekanda specialelectionwillbeheldinthe11th CongressionalDistricttofillherseat.

FormerCongressmanTomMalinowski andRandolphMayorJoeHathawayhave alreadythrowntheirhatsinthering.

Supreme Court Recent Cases

TheSupremeCourthasbeenhandingout decisionsleftandrightlatelyandeven refusingtohearcertaincases Let’stakea lookatwhattheyhavebeenuptorecently:

EmergencyStayonFullSNAP PaymentsEmergencystaysbythe SupremeCourtaren’tdecisionson rightorwrong,butratheratemporary orderthatpausesarulingbyalower courtwhilethematterisstillbeing discussed,effectivelypausingany actionfrombeingtaken.Sincethe SupremeCourtoutranksallother courts,theygetthefinaldecisionon whatstateswereallowedtodo regardingpayment.

TheSupremeCourtdeclinedtoheara casefromKimDavisseekingto challengethelegalityofsamesex marriagesacrossthecountry Asa Kentuckycountyclerk,Davisrefusedto issuemarriagelicensestosame-sex couplestoprotectherreligious freedom

OnJanuary13 ,2026,thecourtwill beginhearingoralargumentsinWest Virginiav.B.P.J.andLittlev.Hecox (Idaho).Bothcasesexplorebanson transgenderwomenandgirlsfrom participatinginwomen’ssportsin publicschoolsandcollegesand challengeexistinglawsinthestates. Bothstatecourtshaveruledthebans unconstitutionalundertheEqual ProtectionClauseofthe14th Amendment,buttheSupremeCourt willnowdecidefortheentirenation.
