CAMP ROSIE & YW STRIVE FOR TEENS SUMMER2022IMPACTREPORT

A Message From YWCA Glendale and Pasadena's CEO, Tara Peterson

Inreturningtolifepost pandemic,CampRosie&YWStriveforTeens2022celebratedareturntoanin personsummercamp,offeringgirlsasafeandsupportivespacetoconnect,createnewfriendships,and build21stCenturyskills.AftertwoyearsofmissedsocialconnectionsandZoomfatigue,itwasclear thatgirlswerereturningfromexperiencingmajorlifechangesthatcamewithlifeduringCOVID.Fortwo yearsinarow,our2020 2021pre surveysshowedthelowestaveragenumberswehaveseenfor markersforself confidenceincomparisontoatleastfourpreviousyearsofGirls'Empowerment SummerPrograms.Girlsreportedalackofconfidenceinexpressingthemselves,incollaboratingwith others,andinspeakingup areasallimpactedfromatleastayearspentbehindacomputer.Wetook onthischallengeofengaginggirlswiththreeweeksofrobust,fulldayprogrammingdesignedtolift themup,honortheirexperiencesofnavigatinglifeinapandemic,andsparktheirinterestsinSTEAM Education,ViolencePreventionandLifeSkills,LeadershipandCivicEngagement,andArtsandCulture.

Forty eightgirlsenrolledforasummerofparticipationinHealthyRelationshipworkshops,STEAM educationandCareerTalkswithdatascientistsfromNASAJPL,AztecDanceandCulture,andcentering themselveswithyogainstruction,mindfulness,andaffirmationpractices Camperscelebratedtheir identitiesandcultures,learnedabouttheimportanceofleadershipandcivicengagement,andlooked aheadtothefuturethroughtheYWStriveforTeensprogram.Girlsexploredpathwaystohigher education,localleadershipandgovernment,andlearnedaboutcorefinancialconceptstogether...and somuchmore!

ThreesessionswereofferedinSummer2022.

CampRosieservesasYWCAGlendaleandPasadena’sprimarypreventioninitiative.Primary preventionstrategiespromotechangesinknowledge,focusonprovidinginformationand raisingawareness,aimtochangeattitudes,beliefsandbehaviors,andaremeasuredby practicingnewskills.Riskfactorsforteendatingviolenceincludelowself esteem,having fewfriendsand/orasmallsupportsystem,emotionaldependenceandinsecurity,lackof emotionsmanagement,beliefinstrictgenderroles,lackofconnectiontotheircommunity, andperceivedweakcommunitysanctionsagainstviolence.

ThewholegirlexperienceisvaluedandhonoredatCampRosie.InadditiontoSTEAM education,campersreceiveworkshopsonbuildinghealthyrelationships,bystander intervention,andstressreductionpracticesincludingyoga,healingmovement,journaling,and breathingexercises.EachcamperparticipatesinSafeDates,aviolencepreventioncurriculum usedthroughouttheweekofcamp,whichaimstochallengeattitudesandbeliefsrelatedto violence,whilepromotingnewskillsthatsupportgirls’safetyandempowerment.

ARTS&CULTURE

Camperslearnaboutandcelebrateculturesandexperiencesthroughanaffirmingsocialjustice lensthroughourartsandcultureworkshopsandgroupsessions.CampersparticipateinAztec danceandculture,journalingandpoetry,andartworkshops,usingdifferentmediumsto expressthemselvesandtoconnectwiththeirpeers.Eachday,camperscheckinasagroupto processdifferenttopicsthatpromoteconnectionandcommunity.

CamperspracticedtheirSTEAMskillsthroughtheweekthrough3DPrintingactivitieswherethey exploreddesignandhands onworkwith3Dprintingpens,followedbyavisittoGlendaleLibrary, Arts&Culture’sMakerSpaceinordertosee3Dprintscometolife.Camperswereexcitedtoseethe possibilitiesintheirabilitytoshapeandcustomizetheirowndesigns.

LIFESKILLS&HEALTHYRELATIONSHIPS

CampersparticipatedinSafeDatesworkshops,aviolencepreventionprogramformiddleschool studentsdesignedtostoporpreventteendatingviolence.Theprogramgoalsaretochange adolescentnormsondatingviolenceandgender roles,improveconflictresolutionskillsfordating relationships,promoteawarenessofcommunityresourcesfordatingviolence,encouragehelp seekingbythosewhohavebeenharmedandharmdo ers,anddeveloppeerhelp givingskills

Charityguidedgirlsthroughyogalessonsinasupportiveandencouragingatmosphere. Camperswereencouragedtopracticeinawayfor“girlstofindyogathroughfunactivities, poses,sequences,gamesandmusicthatwillin turndevelopthemintolifelongyogis!”

Tanitaprovidedwordsofencouragementonthepowerofbeingagirltocampersasthey wereguidedthroughstretches,dancemovements,andaffirmationpractices.Asagroup, camperscontributedtoandlearnedanewdancetogethertoshifttheirmindset.Campers wereencouragedtocontinuetoutilizemovementasatoolforstressreductionintheir everydaylives.

YWStriveforTeensactivitiesprovidedcampersfunwaystolearnaboutcorefinancialconcepts. Theworkshopsencouragedlong termfinancialgoalsettingandbudgeting,withfurther introductionofteamworkandcollaborationinthebuildingofTeenBusinessPlans.Eachlesson andactivityunpackedacamper’sessentiallifeskillsontheirpathwaytofuturefinancialsuccess.

SujeiMilagrosAlston,ofMacehualiztliNoyollotl,celebratedourcampers'culturalidentitiesby sharingAztecdanceandtraditions.Campersparticipatedinceremoniesandinlearningabout theculturalsignificanceofspecificmusicalinstrumentsusedinAztecdanceandparticipatedin craftingtheirown.Highlightedwithinthisculturalrecognitionisafocusonthebeautyand strengthofbeingagirlorwoman.

InpartnershipwithGlendaleLibrary,Arts&Culture,Camperswereempoweredtoamplifytheir voicethroughmakingzines Girlsplannedanddesignedtheirowntheme,layouts,and elementsoftextandimagesinordertobringtheirvisiontolife TheGlendaleLibrary,Arts& Cultureteamproducedhighresolutionscansandcopiesoftheirzinesinordertoallowthegirls topassthemoutamongtheirpeers.

Campersparticipatedinself expressionartsthroughouttheweek,includinginthecreationof self portraitshighlightingtheirpersonalqualitiesandstrengths.Inspirationandcreativitywere encouragedasgirlsexpressedtheirownvisionandstoriesthroughmixedmediainthewaythey wantedthemtobeshown.Eachcamper’sartworkwasgivenamomenttoberecognizedby theirpeers.

GlendaleCityCollege’soutreachteamprovidedcamperswithavirtualtourofthecampusalong withanoverviewofvariousfieldsofstudytheycanpursueinhighereducation.CampRosieteam membersGabrielaAbregoandGabrielaSahagunfurtherbuiltuponthisknowledgetolead studentsthroughdevelopingtheirownpathwaystohighereducationwhereincampers researchedandidentifiedvariousprogramsanduniversitiesthroughoutthecountrythattheymay beinterestedinpursuinginthefuture

InpartnershipwithChristinePowersandcolleaguesattheCityofGlendaleCityHall,campers learnedaboutlocalgovernmentandparticipatedinayouthcenteredcivicengagement presentation.CamperswereinvitedtoseethemselvesasfutureCouncilmembersbysittingin CouncilChamberswhilelearningabouttheinnerworkingsoflocalgovernmentfromwomen leadersacrossvariousCityofGlendaledepartments.Theselocalleadersinspiredgirlsthrough sharingtheirworkandpersonaljourneyswhilehighlightingpathwaysinwhichtheycancreate positivechangeintheircommunity

Founded in 1907, GLAC includes eight neighborhood libraries including the Brand Library & Art Center (The Brand), a regional visual arts and music library, galleries, and performance venue housed in the historic 1904 mansionofGlendalepioneerLeslieBrand;andtheCentral Library, a 93,000 square foot center of community where individualsconvene,collaborate,andcreate.Inadditionto the galleries at The Brand, GLAC also hosts the ReflectSpaceGalleryatCentralLibrary.Asamemberofthe International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, ReflectSpace is an exhibition space designed to explore and reflect on genocides, and human and civil rights violations

The Museum of Neon Art encourages learning, curiosity and expression through the preservation, collection and interpretation of neon, electric and kinetic art. Neon is a gateway between scientific principles and artistic expression. Umaa Rebbapragada is originally from New Jersey and completed her B.A. in Mathematics from University of California,Berkeley.Upongraduation,sheworkedherway into a software engineering role at the internet media company CNET in San Francisco. Longing to return to moremathematicalwork,sheenrolledinaPhD program at Tufts University in the Boston area where she focused on machine learning, a sub field of artificial intelligence. During her Ph.D., Umaa interned at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. Upon completing her Ph.D., she was hired as a staff data scientist at JPL focused on infusing state of the art artificialintelligencetechniquesintosciencedatasystems for NASA and other large-scale scientific projects. Her current focus is on building classification and anomaly detectionsystemsforastronomicalimagingsystems.

A high energy, creative force, Tanita Fadyeyola is a CommunityHealer,ArtActivist,MotivationalSpeaker&an Integrative Wellness Guide. The Owner/Creator of Move.Dance.LIVE!™auniqueteachingmethodandlifestyle brand, Tanita travels the world conducting soulwork sessions, movementshops, certification trainings, and facilitatingcross culturalretreats,combininghergiftasan engaging teacher with the power of dance, movement, meditation and affirmations to create experiences that lead to personal and professional growth. Tanita is a founding member of Black in Glendale and the YWCA's CoalitionforanAnti RacistGlendale.

AZTECDANCEANDCULTURE WITHSUJEIMILAGROSALSTON

MilagroshasbeenanAztecdancerformorethan30years, andshebegandancingattheageof6inLosAngeleswith one of the first danza Azteca groups in the United States, known as Xipe Totec, the first group to bring the Azteca traditions from Mexico. Milagros has had the privilege to also dance with other groups like Copali Copilli. She has traveledthecountrytoperformorattenddifferentevents. DanzaAztecaisherpassionandshecontinuestopractice thecultureandtraditionswithherfamily Milagrosdances withherfamilyinagroupknownasMacehualitzliNoyollo Danza Azteca has been an integral part of her life and Milagros enjoys sharing the culture, customs, and traditions with the youth and community. She has led womxn circles, taught classes, can make the regalia and jewelry worn by danzantes, can fix the drum, or make ayoyotes.

YOGA WITHCHARITY

BornandraisedinDetroit,MICharityTyus,(yogateacher& wellness coach) started her yoga journey 15 years ago whilepregnantwithhersecondchild.Sheiscertifiedwith the yoga alliance with over 500 hours of training which includetrauma-informed,prenatalandashtanga.Through the practice of yoga she gained an awareness of mindful action and developed the tools to find peace amongst chaosonandoffthemat.Understandingthebenefitofthis knowledge led to the creation of Hustle and Yoga Flow, which concentrates on mindful movement through yoga, meditationandbodyworkforthosethatarealwaysonthe go with an emphasis on community. This practice has incorporated wellness programs for professional fighters, studentathletes,seniors,emergencyresponders,children andmore.AlthoughbasedinCalifornia,shecanbefound teachingworkshopsthroughoutthecountry.

Almosttwoyearsago,HasmikBurushyanbeganherworkatYWCAGlendale&Pasadenaastheir

Community Engagement & Advocacy Coordinator where she worked directly with Armenian speaking survivors/victims and co organized the launch of the organization’s first 21 Day Racial Equity & Social Justice Challenge Currently, Burushyan serves with a new role as the Domestic Violence Outreach & Education Coordinator Through this position, she pushes for gender based violence prevention by bringing knowledge to the local community about DV Burushyan is now leading efforts for YWCA Glendale & Pasadena’s 40 hr Peer Counseling DV Training. On her free time, she is a community organizer and advances the Armenian Cause. Burushyan recently receivedherBachelor’sDegreeinPoliticalSciencefromtheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles.

AfterattendingCampRosie&YWStriveforTeens,the2022classofcampersshowedself reportedincreasedconfidenceacrossimpactareasundertheprogram’sfourfocusareasof LifeSkills&HealthyRelationships,GirlsEmpowermentthroughSTEAM,Arts&Culture,and Leadership&CivicEngagement.

Thegreatestincreasesinconfidenceasagroupacrossallimpactareasincluded:

95%ofgirlsreportedfeelingconfidentinmakingnewfriends(41%Increase)

92%ofgirlsreportedfeelingconfidentinspeakingupamongtheirpeers(34%Increase)

79%ofgirlsreportedfeelingconfidentinsharingaboutthemselves(29%Increase)

87%ofgirlsreportedfeelingconfidentincommunicating(23%Increase)

Of note,thisyear'scampercohortselfreportedpre surveypercentagesacrossall measurementareascontinuetobeat10 30percentagepointslowerthancampcohortsprior tothepandemic.ThisundoubtedlyspeakstotheimpactCOVIDhashadinthelivesofyoung girlsandhowvirtualprogramminghasimpactedtheirabilityandopportunitiestoconnect, collaborate,expressoneselfandfosterconfidence.Empowermentprogramswillcontinueto playasignificantroleinthelivesofgirlsforyearstocomeandarecriticallyneededatthis momentintimetosupportgirlstoprocessthelossestheyexperiencedduringtheheightof thepandemic.Wecarrytheselearningswithusaswecontinueourin person,year round programmingforgirls.

IMPACT: SAFE DATES

OneofthemostimpactfulmomentsofCampRosieistheopportunityfortheyoungcamperstolearnabouthealthy connectionsandtheirdynamics,throughaninitiativenamedasSafeDates.Annually,YWCAGlendale&Pasadena’s DomesticViolenceOutreach&EducationDepartmentpresentsSafeDatesthroughouteachsessionofCampRosie. SafeDatesisaneducationalseriesthatspeakstothemissionofdomesticviolencepreventionbyprovidingyouth centeredknowledgeonhealthydatingrelationships.Itismostoftenthefirstexperiencewhereyoungpeople engagewiththeideaofdatinginagroupsetting.

ParticipantscollectivelythinkaboutthequalitiesthattheywouldsearchforiftheywereinterestedinSafeDates, whichinformstheyouthonhowtoidentifysignsofharmfulbehaviorwithinallkindsofrelationships,including connectionswithfriendsaswell.Withmanyyoungteensgrowingintoaculturethatoftenpromotesunhealthy behavior,SafeDatesalsoprovidesdirectiononhowtosupportfriendswhomaybeinvolvedinaharmful relationship.Ascommunicationskillsarenecessaryforallrealmsofengagement,thiseducationaltoolalsoshares knowledgeoneffectivecommunicationduringtimesofconflictandhowtomoveforwardbeyondthosetimes.

ThemissionofSafeDatesistowelcomeagenerationthatknowshowtobuildajoyfulrelationshipandmovesaway fromaworldofviolence.DuringeverysessionofSafeDates,apre surveywasdistributedamongallparticipantsto collecttheplacementoftheirknowledgepriortotheeducationthatSafeDatesprovides.AfterSafeDates concluded,apost surveywasgiventotheparticipants,whichallowedourteamtomeasuretheseries’impact.

Theresultsofthepost surveydisplaythatSafeDateswasaninsightfulexperienceforthecampers.Thefollowing areaccountsandcomparisonsextractedfromthedistributedsurveystodisplaytheimpactofSafeDates:

PRE AND POST-SURVEY RESULTS

Thepre surveyindicatedthat73%of campersidentifiedthestatement "Anyonecanbeabusivetowardsthe peopletheydate"tobetrue.However, thepost surveydemonstratedgrowth inthisarea.AfterattendingSafeDates, 86%ofcamperswereabletoidentify thisastrue.
