



Inreturningtolifepost pandemic,CampRosie&YWStriveforTeens2022celebratedareturntoanin personsummercamp,offeringgirlsasafeandsupportivespacetoconnect,createnewfriendships,and build21stCenturyskills.AftertwoyearsofmissedsocialconnectionsandZoomfatigue,itwasclear thatgirlswerereturningfromexperiencingmajorlifechangesthatcamewithlifeduringCOVID.Fortwo yearsinarow,our2020 2021pre surveysshowedthelowestaveragenumberswehaveseenfor markersforself confidenceincomparisontoatleastfourpreviousyearsofGirls'Empowerment SummerPrograms.Girlsreportedalackofconfidenceinexpressingthemselves,incollaboratingwith others,andinspeakingup areasallimpactedfromatleastayearspentbehindacomputer.Wetook onthischallengeofengaginggirlswiththreeweeksofrobust,fulldayprogrammingdesignedtolift themup,honortheirexperiencesofnavigatinglifeinapandemic,andsparktheirinterestsinSTEAM Education,ViolencePreventionandLifeSkills,LeadershipandCivicEngagement,andArtsandCulture.
Forty eightgirlsenrolledforasummerofparticipationinHealthyRelationshipworkshops,STEAM educationandCareerTalkswithdatascientistsfromNASAJPL,AztecDanceandCulture,andcentering themselveswithyogainstruction,mindfulness,andaffirmationpractices Camperscelebratedtheir identitiesandcultures,learnedabouttheimportanceofleadershipandcivicengagement,andlooked aheadtothefuturethroughtheYWStriveforTeensprogram.Girlsexploredpathwaystohigher education,localleadershipandgovernment,andlearnedaboutcorefinancialconceptstogether...and somuchmore!

Umaa Rebbapragada is originally from New Jersey and completed her B.A. in Mathematics from University of California,Berkeley.Upongraduation,sheworkedherway into a software engineering role at the internet media company CNET in San Francisco. Longing to return to moremathematicalwork,sheenrolledinaPhD program at Tufts University in the Boston area where she focused on machine learning, a sub field of artificial intelligence. During her Ph.D., Umaa interned at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. BornandraisedinDetroit,MICharityTyus,(yogateacher& wellness coach) started her yoga journey 15 years ago whilepregnantwithhersecondchild.Sheiscertifiedwith the yoga alliance with over 500 hours of training which includetrauma-informed,prenatalandashtanga.Through the practice of yoga she gained an awareness of mindful action and developed the tools to find peace amongst chaosonandoffthemat.Understandingthebenefitofthis knowledge led to the creation of Hustle and Yoga Flow, which concentrates on mindful movement through yoga, meditationandbodyworkforthosethatarealwaysonthe go with an emphasis on community. Community Engagement & Advocacy Coordinator where she worked directly with Armenian speaking survivors/victims and co organized the launch of the organization’s first 21 Day Racial Equity & Social Justice Challenge Currently, Burushyan serves with a new role as the Domestic Violence Outreach & Education Coordinator Through this position, she pushes for gender based violence prevention by bringing knowledge to the local community about DV Burushyan is now leading efforts for YWCA Glendale & Pasadena’s 40 hr Peer Counseling DV Training. On her free time, she is a community organizer and advances the Armenian Cause. Burushyan recently receivedherBachelor’sDegreeinPoliticalSciencefromtheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles.

Of note,thisyear'scampercohortselfreportedpre surveypercentagesacrossall measurementareascontinuetobeat10 30percentagepointslowerthancampcohortsprior tothepandemic.ThisundoubtedlyspeakstotheimpactCOVIDhashadinthelivesofyoung girlsandhowvirtualprogramminghasimpactedtheirabilityandopportunitiestoconnect, collaborate,expressoneselfandfosterconfidence.Empowermentprogramswillcontinueto playasignificantroleinthelivesofgirlsforyearstocomeandarecriticallyneededatthis momentintimetosupportgirlstoprocessthelossestheyexperiencedduringtheheightof thepandemic.Wecarrytheselearningswithusaswecontinueourin person,year round programmingforgirls.
OneofthemostimpactfulmomentsofCampRosieistheopportunityfortheyoungcamperstolearnabouthealthy connectionsandtheirdynamics,throughaninitiativenamedasSafeDates.Annually,YWCAGlendale&Pasadena’s DomesticViolenceOutreach&EducationDepartmentpresentsSafeDatesthroughouteachsessionofCampRosie. SafeDatesisaneducationalseriesthatspeakstothemissionofdomesticviolencepreventionbyprovidingyouth centeredknowledgeonhealthydatingrelationships.Itismostoftenthefirstexperiencewhereyoungpeople engagewiththeideaofdatinginagroupsetting.
ParticipantscollectivelythinkaboutthequalitiesthattheywouldsearchforiftheywereinterestedinSafeDates, whichinformstheyouthonhowtoidentifysignsofharmfulbehaviorwithinallkindsofrelationships,including connectionswithfriendsaswell.Withmanyyoungteensgrowingintoaculturethatoftenpromotesunhealthy behavior,SafeDatesalsoprovidesdirectiononhowtosupportfriendswhomaybeinvolvedinaharmful relationship.Ascommunicationskillsarenecessaryforallrealmsofengagement,thiseducationaltoolalsoshares knowledgeoneffectivecommunicationduringtimesofconflictandhowtomoveforwardbeyondthosetimes.
ThemissionofSafeDatesistowelcomeagenerationthatknowshowtobuildajoyfulrelationshipandmovesaway fromaworldofviolence.DuringeverysessionofSafeDates,apre surveywasdistributedamongallparticipantsto collecttheplacementoftheirknowledgepriortotheeducationthatSafeDatesprovides.AfterSafeDates concluded,apost surveywasgiventotheparticipants,whichallowedourteamtomeasuretheseries’impact.
