Main Road

Main roads accessing to Jalan Alor includes Changkat Bukit Bintang, Jalan Nagasari, Tengkat Tong Shin, Jalan Bukit Bintang Jalan Pudu, Jalan Bulan,. While the intersecting roads are Jalan Rembia and Jalan Sahabat

Wisma City Tower covered around 1.8% of the area within the site selected, and 8.6% of the building area along Jalan Alor which consist of a total of 92 unit buildings.

It consists of a total of 84 parking lots along Jalan Alor excluding the carpark open area at the end of Jalan Alor.

Wisma tower lies as a relatively high rise along Jalan Alor with a total of 18 levels.

Within the area there are other high rises and some famous restaurants and hotels with just 4 to 13 levels. The other low rise shops and restaurants are in range of 1-4 levels.

The site boundary set for our Architecture Design Studio 03 project is centered with Wisma City Tower on Jalan Alor, covering a total area of 68155 sqm shown as the highlighted area.

The site includes hotels, residential buildings, shop lots, restaurants, hawker stalls while there are also church, café and shopping mall such as Pavilion, Lot 10 and Sungei Wang nearby within walking distance of 15 minutes.

Strengths

HUMAN AND CULTURE

- Jalan Alor is rich with culture from different races shown by its variety of traditional food from the hawkers

- The site is also a diverse area as different races of Malaysians can be found there along with foreigners

CIRCULATION

- Constant flow of visitors coming for the street food

MRT station located nearby the site with affordable fares

PHYSICAL

- The site is able to attract crowds with its strategic location

- Located within commercial, employment and shopping districts

- Jalan Alor is well known for their street food

- Famous spot for tourists during night time

- A lot of parking spaces provided for vehicles

PROGRAM -

Street performances by locals can be found entertaining the visitors at night

- Big events are also usually held there since the site can attract crowds with ease

SENSORY

- Attractive smell from food stalls along the streets

- Beautiful scenery especially during the night time

Good view from all directions as most buildings around the Wisma tower are shorter

- The high-rise buildings around the area help provide free and efficient sun shading to the site for pedestrians

Numerous bus stops situated around the site as a second choice of public transportation

Streetlights are provided to improve safety for drivers, riders and pedestrians. Also allows people to see and move around clearly

Weaknesses

PHYSICAL -

Not suitable for disabled people since there are a lack of ramps

Some pipes from the shop lots are leaking causing wet floors which inconveniences pedestrians

- No buffer zone in the street

- Narrow roads and tight spaces along Jalan Alor may cause discomfort to the pedestrians

PROGRAM -

The street performances may cause litter along the streets if the performers are not responsible

The hosting of big events may also produce litter around the area if not handled properly by the authorities

CIRCULATION

- The narrow roads might cause car accidents as the pedestrians have limited space to walk. Traffic jams may also occur if the drivers do not drive responsibly

- The cars parking illegally along the streets may also cause some problems on the traffic circulation

The vegetations there are lacking as most spaces are used for buildings so this may limit the natural ventilation and reduce the quality of air

SENSORY

- Since the site is located in a busy area, loud noises produced by the vehicles may cause discomfort to the pedestrians

- The streets are very dirty as the rubbish is not disposed properly and unpleasant smells can be detected

Pathways are not clean and well constructed.

The smell of smokes from the food stalls can be irritating for some pedestrians - Vandalism can also be found along the streets which is not a good sight for the tourists visiting there

SAFETY AND SECURITY

- Avoid the beggars

DRAINAGE

- Increase drainage around site to prevent flood during heavy rain

- Fill the potholes on the road.

- Increase the number of the trees, to reduce the chances of flash flood.

CIRCULATION -

Build bus stations/bus stops around the site. - Encourage the use of public transport for smoother traffic flow.

Place cycling and disability lanes along Jalan Alor to improve accessibility.

- Provide food delivery service.

FACILITIES - Add blind tiles to improve accessibility .

- Add new routes to reach other places besides KL.

- Modular design by using movable structureS.

- Enhance urban-rustic to the site.

01 Site Analysis & Synthesis

BRADENBURG GATE , GERMANY

Brandenburg gate is a neoclassical monument in Berlin. It was built in 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to town of Brandenburg. Originally, the gate was an entrance that led to Emperor’s city palace. The Brandenburg Gate became infamous in the Cold War when it was the symbol for the division of Berlin and the rest of Germany.

Location : Berlin, Germany

Year : 1791 completed

The five passageways have a specific purpose, citizens were only allowed to use the outermost two passageways on each side

The middle gate is wider than the others which gives prominence and highlights the passage of important people such as royalty and visiting foreign diplomats.

THE ARC, RIMBAYU

Architects : Garis Architect Sdn Bhd

Typology : To provide shelter for community activities- a place for regular living amenity, social and recreational activities, communal and sports events, completed in 2014

Area : Approximately 664sqm

Location : Bandar Rimbayu Selangor, Malaysia

(Located near to the Rimbayu residential area

Has indoor courtyard and the holes in the canopy allow the branches of trees to poke through the roof

The Gleneagles Community Centre is surounded by Skatepark, Clubhouse and Elementary School of Gleneagles for better community activities.

A tunnel-like semiprivate space perfect for small talk.

Split floors for more explorative experience

Sectional Perspectives

A small library in the corner which is opened to the exterior for a unique experience.

On the Upper Ground Floor, a small garden is built. It also provides visitors a place to chill.

Built in seating staircase for spectating and chit chatting.

A space hanging half way in between the Ground Floor and Upper Ground Floor. It is covered with bended bamboo for adequate privacy.

Using ‘Lumber Climbers’ as staircase to the Upper Ground Floor.

Underground play space for children with recessed bookshelf underneath the stairs.

Above the Reading Area in the corner, there is semiopened gym for great ventilation and also lets visitor to have a full view on the Jalan Alor Street.

Beside it, there is a small balcony for resting.
