You make a huge difference to our staff, patients and families every day.

With your continued support, we can keep making a positive difference, by funding vital extras to improve patient care and experience and support staff wellbeing.

Scalp cooling system

The Friends of York Hospital have kindly funded a scalp cooling system for York Hospital. Scalp cooling is intended to help prevent hair loss, also known as chemotherapy-induced alopecia, in people undergoing Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment. On average approximately 50 patients per month opt for scalp cooling and it is expected that demand will increase as more treatment opportunities become available. A massive thank you to the Friends of York Hospital for funding such important equipment!

The opening of the new maternity bereavement suite

We are very proud to have officially opened The Butterfly Suite, a new maternity bereavement facility, at York Hospital.

We ran an appeal to raise £250,000 to fund the Butterfly Suite, which received huge support from the local community, hospital staff and the Friends of York, Selby and St Monica’s hospitals. Thanks to your donations and an incredibly generous donation from the York branch of the stillbirth and neonatal charity, Sands, the suite was officially opened in March.

While the hospital did have a designated room for parents to use and stay in with their baby, it was quite small and functional. The new suite offers more space, privacy, and is specifically designed to give families somewhere they feel safe and cared for at an incredibly difficult time. The suite also has a private garden for families to spend time outside and thanks to wonderful support from Donna and Matthew, who fundraised by hosting Olivia’s Dream Ball, the garden is undergoing renovation and will be completed in Summer.

Beverley Shelley, Bereavement Midwife at York Hospital, said:

The loss of a baby at any time is devastating for parents and their families. Good bereavement care at the start of a parent’s grief journey can have an impact on their long-term mental wellbeing. The creation of a purposely designed bereavement suite is an essential part of this. It helps to create a sanctuary for parents away from the busy workings of a delivery ward.

“The new bereavement suite provides more much needed space, is soundproofed, has new furnishings and equipment and access to its own garden. It promotes a quiet, welcoming area for parents to spend quality time with their baby, creating memories that need to last a lifetime.

To celebrate the completion of the suite, we held an opening event in March to thank those who helped to make the project possible.

The event included a short service in the chapel at York Hospital, followed by refreshments and the guests attending the event were invited to take a tour of the new Butterfly Suite.

Approximately 50 families each year at York Hospital will find out that their baby is unlikely to survive birth. We know there is nothing that can take away the pain for these families, but we also know how precious those few hours or days can be before they have to say their final goodbyes.

We would like to thank everyone that has contributed to the Butterfly Appeal to make this project possible.

The difference you’ve made

Ablutions room at York Hospital

Thanks to your donations and a generous grant from NHS Charities Together, we are delighted to have funded an ablutions facility which has recently been opened at York Hospital.

The room has been created by refurbishing an old doctors’ on-call room chosen for its proximity to the prayer room in the chapel.

The space has been reconfigured to fit a large ablutions room, which includes new sanitary appliances, fixtures and fittings, new finishes to walls, floors and ceilings, and full wheelchair accessibility.

Hassena Karbani has worked alongside the capital projects and Chaplaincy team since the start of the project. Hassena said:

I am delighted the ablution area is now complete. A dedicated ablutions area in both our acute hospitals makes an essential difference to our colleagues and service users, enabling them to seamlessly fulfil their daily prayers on site.

“On behalf of the Race Equality Network, our staff and patients, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone involved in the process over the years and to York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity for their funding. This is a great step in recognising the diversity of our workforce and promoting inclusion within the workplace.

3D digital intra-oral scanner

Your donations have funded an innovative 3D digital intra-oral scanner to take digital scans of patients’ teeth and surrounding structures.

This new method of scanning will replace traditional paste impressions, improving the experience for oral cancer patients.

These scans can also be transmitted electronically to produce a 3D printed version of the teeth, a much faster process than traditional impression appointments.

Cardiorespiratory waiting area

The waiting area in the cardiorespiratory department has received a renovation thanks to your donations. This much-needed update has transformed the space into a more comfortable and welcoming environment for patients and their families.

The cardiorespiratory department runs diagnostic tests and treatment for patients with heart and lung conditions. The waiting area is often a place where patients and their loved ones experience anxiety and uncertainty.

The renovated space aims to relieve some of that stress by providing a calming atmosphere featuring a mural painted by a local art company; brightening the space and giving patients something else to focus on. This helps to ensure patients feel calm before going in for their diagnostic test or treatment.

Tilt tables for critical care patients

Your donations enabled our Critical Care physiotherapists to purchase a tilt table to benefit patients under their care. This equipment will allow patients a choice of ways in which to mobilise, from sitting to standing, allowing the patient options to give them back some control in their life.

Not only will this benefit the patients physically, but the tables mean patients will be able to stand and sit for the first time. In turn this will increase mood, engagement and motivation to continue working hard to improve their condition.

The project was funded by The Kirkby Foundation who donated £10,000 for the artwork along with a donation of £2,500 donation from The Whitwam Family Charitable Foundation.

Staff and patient areas required brightening as there is no natural light in the unit. Lightboxes in the corridor were displayed with four prints from photographer Alexander Linsey. Staff chose bright vibrant floral design prints which local artist Michelle Hughes designed along with selected linocut landscapes from her collection.

Finally, Artist Clare M Woods’ soothing paintings were chosen to be installed in the unit and a staff meeting room.

The artwork was designed to help provide a focus and to help families who are facing challenging situations with their loved ones being in the ICU.

Elaine from the ICU team explains:

In intensive care, the appearance of the artwork has dramatically changed the unit. It looks much less clinical and altogether much more welcoming. The link corridor has changed from soulless and clinical to a lovely reminder of the great outdoors! I’m sure patients as they recover from severe illness will see that art and will gain extra positivity from it.

Community support

The Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal is picking up pace, with £222,000 of the £400,000 target so far!

The new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre is scheduled to open early 2024 and will transform the overall experience for patients coming to hospital. The high quality and modern facilities will also dramatically improve the environment for hospital staff who work tirelessly to provide quality care.

We are so grateful for the support we have received so far. If you would like to organise a fundraising event or schedule a talk with your local school or community group, please get in touch.

Join our Business Club

Our business club offers businesses in Scarborough and the East Coast the opportunity to be part of something amazing by joining us to help to make Scarborough’s Urgent and Emergency Care Centre the best it can be for patients and staff.

We are asking businesses to partner with us for 2023 and commit to raising at least £1,000 for the appeal. This can be through donations, employee fundraising or holding their own events.

Business Club member Spectrum Cleaning Solutions raised £500 from a football fundraiser and are now preparing for their next challenge in June where they are aiming to climb the height of Mt Kilimanjaro on a stepper machine, we can’t wait to see how they get on!

Lloyd Dowson Accountants joined our Business Club and on top of their £1,000 donation, kindly donated 500 car and window stickers to promote the appeal. If you would like to show your support by displaying a sticker in your car or business windows, please get in touch!

A massive thank you to Intensive Care Consultant Ben, who completed an ultra marathon, running 47 miles between York and Scarborough Hospitals to raise funds to help equip family rest areas within the new critical care unit. Ben raised over £4,000, a fantastic amount that will make a massive difference by allowing families to have somewhere to rest and reflect whilst being close to their loved ones.

Acute Learning Disabilities Nurse, Jo, is taking on another challenge for the appeal! After the success of last year’s Cleveland Way walk where many clients of the Wilf Ward Family Trust joined Jo for the last leg of her challenge, the team have decided to walk again. This time they will be taking on a series of mount challenges around Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough in July and are hoping to raise £6,000!

We invited schools to take our bespoke money boxes giving pupils the opportunity to get involved and help raise funds for the Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal. Thanks to the support of six primary schools, over £2,000 has been raised to date.

Fell Family fundraising for ICU

Cathy and Mark Smith undertook a cycling challenge from John O’Groats to Land’s End to honour the memory of their friend David Fell. David tragically passed away while rescuing his children from a riptide at Reighton Sands in the Summer of 2021. Scarlet, one of his children, sustained injuries and received life-saving treatment at Scarborough Hospital’s ICU.

The couple were grateful for the care provided to Scarlet and wanted to show their appreciation to the hospital staff who saved her life. Cathy and Mark recently visited Scarborough Hospital to donate £2,815 towards the Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal. An amazing amount that will benefit the Intensive Care Unit.

Mods and Rockers charity ride

The Annual York Inset Scooter Club memorial charity ride took place in April, with hundreds of bikers and scooter riders coming together at the Eye of York and riding to the Mended Drum in Huby.

Over £760 was raised on the day, with the Inset Scooter Club kindly rounding up the donation to make a fantastic £1,000 towards the Magnolia Centre at York Hospital.
