Helping Elaine overcome her fear of needles
Elaine had a severe phobia of needles all her life. Routine encounters with needles were always distressing for her and any hospital visits or procedures extremely traumatic.
Elaine was then unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. Under the care of Ms Jenny Piper, Consultant Breast Surgeon, Elaine went on a course of medication to help shrink the tumour whilst avoiding needles, but an operation was still needed.
Elaine was referred to Dr Phil Simpson, Clinical Psychologist, as an urgent case. The combination of her severe needle phobia and the breast surgery was going to be a challenge. After sessions with Dr Simpson, Elaine learnt techniques and strategies to start to overcome her fears and be able to handle needles. Despite this progress, Dr Simpson needed to think about ways Elaine could practice these strategies with needles being inserted to be confident ahead of the big nuclear injection and surgery that was needed.
This is where your donations came in to help. Michelle Kirkman, Complementary Therapist for Cancer Services had recently been trained in auricular acupuncture, with the specialist chair, needles and other equipment all being paid for by Y&S Hospitals Charity. Elaine was to be the first patient to benefit from the Michelle’s expertise, as due to Covid only staff had been able to trial the procedure so far.
The treatment involves having 10 needles inserted in certain points of the ears to boost relaxation and wellbeing. In Elaine’s case, she could practice her coping strategies in real life as the small needles were inserted. Elaine managed to have all 10 needles in her ears with no problems and went on to successfully have her nuclear injection and surgery. She is incredibly grateful to everyone who went above and beyond to get her the treatment she needed.
Cash raffle success!
We offered everyone the chance to start the New Year with a bang by winning £2,023 for 2023. Thank you to everyone who took part!
Our lucky winner Dawn, from Filey, was so grateful for her care at York and Scarborough hospitals she was moved to buy the raffle ticket in aid of the new Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal at Scarborough Hospital.

Dawn, who lives with her husband, said I never win anything, so the phone call to tell us we had won was a shock. We are delighted and still cannot believe it.
We haven’t decided what to spend it on yet, so we will sit on it for a while and maybe buy something more extravagant than normal.
We started to support York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity after we received fantastic care. We moved from Essex a few years ago and found the treatment at both York and Scarborough second to none with staff going the extra mile.

There were five other lucky winners who won £100 each. Community Fundraiser, Maya Liversidge said
This was our first cash raffle, and we are so pleased that a local supporter won. Thank you to everyone who took part and continues to support our hospitals charity.
The money raised from the raffle will help to support the Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal for Scarborough Hospital.
For more information on our appeal see pages 13-15.

Support from our communities
Olivia’s Dream Charity Ball
Enormous thanks to Donna and Matthew for organising Olivia’s Dream Charity Ball which took place in November and raised an incredible £30,000 towards the new maternity bereavement suite at York Hospital.

Donna and Matthew wanted to show their gratitude to staff at the hospital after their baby daughter Olivia Tina Bailey was born sleeping in June. It was an incredibly special night, with 470 guests present to show their support. The sparkling evening included a live auction, performances and a diamond raffle sponsored by Bradley’s Jewellers in York.
A huge well done and thank you to Donna and Matthew and everyone that supported the event!
The difference you’ve made
Cardiac patient information cards
Thanks to your donations, our Cardiology team were able to fund antiplatelet medicine cards.
Antiplatelet medication is commonly used to reduce the risk of a heart attack and is vital for cardiac patients. The handy wallet and pursesized cards contain the patient’s demographic details and information advising the patient on what to do if side effects are experienced. The card contains evidence based information regarding their prescribed medicines with advice in the event of adverse side effects.

Labour ward staff room refurbishment
The labour ward staff room at York Hospital has received a full refurbishment thanks to your donations.
The staff room and kitchen space are now brighter, more spacious and provide a safe place for staff to rest and recuperate. The refurbishment has created a space for staff to help manage and process the physical and psychological demands of their busy working environment.

Sam’s 5k a day challenge
A huge thank you to the incredible Sam who set himself the challenge to run 5k a day for a month to help raise funds for the new maternity bereavement suite at York following the loss of his niece in August last year. Sam raised over £3,500, a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile cause.

Lung health awareness event
The lung cancer team at the York Community Stadium held an event to promote awareness of lung cancer symptoms.
Thanks to your donations, the team, accompanied by a giant set of inflatable ‘mega lungs’ were on hand to promote looking after your lungs to patients and visitors.

Arts in Hospitals
To welcome the Spring into York Hospital the Arts Team loaned a fantastic collection of art from ‘New Light’.

New Light celebrates and promotes Northern art, supporting both well-known and emerging artists. The art collection has been growing over 12 years to include more than 80 pieces of artwork and The Arts team were delighted to work in collaboration.
The exhibition aimed to make contemporary art more accessible for staff, patients and visitors whilst giving the opportunity to experience art of the highest quality displayed in the Hospital environment.
The common thread through all is a deep belief that the visual arts matter and the North of England deserves to be celebrated. Many of the artworks celebrate local landmarks and encourages us to look closer at nature.
Support Groups
Each of our hospitals is supported by a League of Friends; these are independent registered charities which work to help provide equipment and resources to improve patient care and comfort along with volunteers.
Friends of York Hospital
A big thank you to the Friends of York Hospital who recently funded £40,000 towards Visual Field Equipment for the Eye Service department at York’s Community Stadium. The equipment includes a visual field analyser, focimeters and tonometers. Enhancing the service with this equipment will help to catch up on the backlog of patients resulting from the pandemic and reduce waiting times in the future.

Hussein Syed, Chairman of the Friends of York Hospitals explains
We are proud and fortunate that we can provide £40,000 to York Hospital for a piece of eye equipment. This will help clear the backlog of waiting patients at the Community Stadium.
