Dean’s Message

A heartfelt welcome to the beginning of our new concert season, Flowing Resonances! It has been an absolute pleasure celebrating our 20th anniversary this year with our previous concert season Looking Back, Moving Forward – celebrating this milestone, tracing the journey and support that has brought us here, and envisioning the exciting future that lies ahead.

As we advance into the second half of the year, we continue to showcase the many resonances that ow from our work – within and beyond Singapore; across our student, faculty and alumni; as well as through innovative approaches and synergies.

Amongst the many events of the season, here’s a sample of highlights we can look forward to:

Distinguished visiting artists:

Catch recitals by pianist Alexander Schimpf (21 Aug) and violinist Koichiro Harada (31 Aug, supported by the Ong Teng Cheong Professorship in Music). Also don’t miss violinist Kam Ning, cellist Richard Harwood and faculty pianist Lim Yan performing as a piano trio (4 Oct), a strong showcase of key artists in Singapore’s classical music scene!

We also look forward to masterclasses by cellist Jan Vogler (17 Aug), clarinettist Julian Bliss (24 Aug) and violinist Leonidas Kavakos (12 Oct).

Exciting ensemble synergies:

A popular favourite in our season o erings, the Orchestral Institute performs Walton and Brahms with Concerto Competition Prizewinner cello student Zhu Zeyu (9 Sep), as well as works by Schoenberg and Rachmanino in One Always Returns later in the season (7 Oct).

OpusNovus and the Elder Conservatorium from Australia continue our collaboration across cultures, uniting students to showcase new works from both countries (20 Sep).

A vocal extravaganza:

Join us in song with a recital by alumni Alice Cahya Putri and Cindy Honanta (12 Sep), and a Franz Schubert Festival with Ong Teng Cheong Professor Roger Vignoles exploring Schubert’s Lieder from a poetic perspective (31 Oct, 2 Nov, 9 Nov).

Performers(‘) Present (25-28 Oct):

Last but not least, join us and the global artistic research community for performances, presentations, re ections, and fellowship – all focused on furthering the evolution of creative practices in music. We look forward to the Southeast Asian Golden Age Symphony premiere (28 Oct), where we unveil an exciting new orchestral commission by seven young composers representing some of Southeast Asia’s brightest voices – special thanks to Mr Nicholas Nash and Ms Phalgun Raju for their support.

Come ow with us this season as we celebrate the power of inspirational, life-a rming musicmaking!

The Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore and the Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide, reunite for the second installment of their pioneering, cross-cultural collaborative endeavor. Celebrating the triumph of their maiden project last year, which saw students from both institutions performing synchronously in two cities for their respective audiences, the collaboration is set to evolve further.

This year, they are taking their unique musical camaraderie to new heights by forming an ensemble composed of students from both schools. The ensemble will perform a varied programme showcasing the works of contemporary composers from both Singapore and Australia such as Liza Lim, Yuting Tan, Ross Edwards & Tony Makarome, in addition to a selected student composer from each conservatory. This provides a dynamic blend of pieces that mirror the rich cultural legacies of both nations.

The performances will take place in both cities and promise to be a remarkable journey through the diverse soundscapes of Singapore and Australia, highlighting the innovative synergies between these two institutions.

KAM NING, violin

RICHARD HARWOOD, cello LIM YAN, piano

This chamber residency features visiting artists Kam Ning on violin and Richard Harwood on cello. A Singaporean now based in the UK, Kam Ning is a highly sought-after soloist and chamber musician. Amongst her many accolades are prizes at the Folkestone Menuhin International Violin Competition; the International Pablo Sarasate Violin Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. As an educator, she was professor of violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels and is currently principal teacher at the Yehudi Menuhin School.

In addition to his post as principal cellist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Richard Harwood is a seasoned concerto soloist and chamber musician, including a few years as cellist of the Sitkovetsky Trio (2014-2016). Winner of the Pierre Fournier Award and the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig, Richard has also conducted masterclasses at conservatories in the UK and Austria.

YST faculty in collaborative piano Lim Yan joins Kam Ning and Richard Harwood in this much-awaited chamber recital.

This evening, we express our appreciation to the late Dr Yong Pung How, who was former Chief Justice of Singapore. He was a transformative champion of education at NUS and talent development in many institutions he was associated with across Singapore; and a crucial benefactor in the development of YST as Singapore’s rst conservatory of music.

As Trustee of the Yong Loo Lin Trust, Dr Yong helped YST secure its endowment from Ms Yong Siew Yoon. The latter’s donation enabled the founding of the Conservatory in memory of her sister Ms Yong Siew Toh, an ardent pianist and music educator. On behalf of all sta , students, faculty and alumni of the Conservatory, we express our gratitude for his support as well as his vision, dedication, and continuing advocacy for the arts in Singapore.

ARNOLD SCHOENBERG

Concerto for String Quartet & Orchestra

SERGEI RACHMANINOFF

Symphonic Dances, Op. 45

It is 1930, three years before the Nazi Party took power, and Arnold seems to have it all—an enviable teaching position in Berlin, a much-improved public reception to his new works in the atonal style – and it seems the “Emancipator of Dissonance” has nally found his admirers! At his height of success, a return to tonality would seem ludicrous! Yet, that was to be…

It is 1940, three years before he would succumb to cancer, and Sergei does not have it all. World War II is raging back home, and as a Russian in New York, there is an emptiness that no amount of performing, conducting, or even cherry malted milk oats (his favourite drink!), could ll. He longs to compose, but must pay the bills through piano performance. If only he could return—to Russia, to his self…

Born just a year apart, the music of Sergei Rachmanino (1873-1943) and Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) could not sound more di erent. Yet years later, during their refuge in the United States, both yearned for a “return”—albeit expressed in di erent ways. The Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 symbolizes Rachmanino ’s long-awaited (and nal) return to his beloved homeland, while the Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra demonstrates Schoenberg’s allegiance to tradition, through his evolutionary recasting of the Handel original. Join us as the YST Orchestral Institute embarks on a owing journey of ever-resonant departures, borrowings, and returns.

Seven young Southeast Asian composers. One Southeast Asian Golden Age Symphony. How will it all unfold?

The Southeast Asian Golden Age Symphony is a brand-new commission bringing together seven rising composers: Gema Swaratyagita (Indonesia), Hoang Pho (Vietnam), Lee Chie Tsang (Malaysia), Thatchatham Silsupan (Thailand), Danny Imson (Philippines), Jonathan Shin and Sya qah ‘Adha Sallehin (Singapore).
