We are thrilled to welcome you to a brand new concert season at YST — one that carries forward the vision and spirit of past seasons as we continue to nurture young talents, spark curiosity and inspire new musical discoveries.
From orchestral showcases by the YST Orchestral Institute, to blockbuster chamber music celebrations, cross-cultural collaborations, bold new music, and dynamic recitals by visiting artists such as Domenico Nordio, Slide Monsters, Calefax, Jennifer Koh and more, this season celebrates the musical diversity of our YST Community.
Wherever your musical journey begins, you’ll find a place here with us — this is a season you won’t want to miss!
“YST nurtures not only eminent musicians, but also excellent leaders and entrepreneurs. It hones artistry, engages the community through music, and equips musicians with diverse capabilities for a rapidly-evolving 21st century.”
Inspirational life-affirming music-making is at the heart of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) at the National University of Singapore.
Founded in 2003, YST has established a reputation as Asia’s most exciting international conservatory, nurturing a new generation of musical leaders in performance, composition, production, and community engagement. Across their diverse stories, they share a common home: the close-knit YST community with its internationally diverse student body, world-class faculty, and warm connections with alumni and the industry.
20 years ago, we began our journey with the Bachelor of Music (BMus) programme as our core educational focus. Since then, our educational offering has expanded substantially to include graduate, continuing education, and young artist programmes, as well as course offerings for NUS undergraduates at large. Further, we engage the public in music through our extensive concert programming, community engagement initiatives, and the work of our Centre for Music and Health.

“An experience of total perception, plunging the spectator into an incandescent matter that is both luminous and sonorous, a magma of flowing sounds, shapes and colours.”
Premiering for the first time in Singapore, Italian composer Fausto Romitelli’s final magnum opus
An Index of Metals unfolds as an ecstatic ritual of sound, light and image — a psychedelic fusion of music for soprano, eleven amplified instruments, and immersive multimedia, which collide to create a hallucinatory present that dissolves the boundaries between dream and reality.
Look forward to this cross-cultural collaboration, bringing together young talent from across the globe for a visceral performance of one of the 21st century’s most seminal works — an evening not to be missed!

The YST Orchestral Institute under Principal Conductor Jason Lai traces the outlines of a world in flux — one in which artistic voices wrestle with power, beauty, loss, and human dignity.
At the heart of this dialogue is Francisco Goya, whose work spans the elegance of 18th-century court portraiture to the dark, unflinching visions of conflict and suffering that defined his later years. Animated projections by YST alumna Stephanie Tan (BMus ‘21) bring Goya’s works to life in real time, offering a vivid counterpoint to the music and revealing the shared emotional terrain between sound and image.
The evening opens with Manuel de Falla’s Interlude and Spanish Dance No. 1 from La Vida Breve, a work rooted in Andalusian culture and shaped by the flamenco pulse. Beneath its brilliance lies a story of love constrained by class and fate — a portrait of life’s intensity in the face of impermanence. The programme then turns to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”, a revolutionary work originally dedicated to Napoleon, then famously retracted. What remains is a deeply personal and expansive musical statement — not about a single hero, but about the human struggle to become one.
Both Beethoven and Goya stood on the edge of Enlightenment ideals, where reason met rupture, and hope contended with disillusionment. Eroica bears the weight of ambition, collapse, and renewal. Through the lens of Goya’s art, beautifully reimagined by Tan with empathy and invention, this performance invites us to reflect on an age (and its heroes) that was not yet what it imagined itself to be.
An age in flux – not so different from our own – still becoming.

“Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard / Are sweeter.”
— John Keats, from Ode on a Grecian Urn
In the Romantic era, the ode emerged as a form of poetic tribute — a heartfelt, often exalted contemplation on beauty, nature, and the sublime. An Ode to Love draws from this tradition, inviting us to explore the depths of emotion that music can transcend beyond sound.
We open with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) — a vivid evocation of nature’s grandeur, inspired by the composer’s encounter with the rugged Scottish coastline. We then move inward with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, written during a turbulent period in the composer’s life as a personal ode to forbidden passion. The evening culminates with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 — a profound meditation on love’s trials and triumphs, steeped in grandeur and emotional intensity.
Presented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the batons of Principal Conductor Jason Lai and Feng Jiale (MMus, Conducting), and joined by YST Concerto Competition 2025 Prizewinners Syu Cheng-Yi (BMus3, Violin) and Chai Zi Qing (BMus4, Piano), An Ode to Love is a poetic journey that draws us not only towards love’s melodies, but also the unheard echoes of its enduring power.
