beyond fraction beyond time signature beyond words beyond beginnings … 3, 4! it’s an attitude.
Our “...3, 4!” season continues in a new semester of exploration, carrying forward the same spirit of new beginnings and fresh ways of experiencing music.
While the musical meter of 3/4 and the world of waltzes may first come to mind, these commonplace numbers invite us to look deeper and uncover alternative ways of seeing.
Our theme finds a special resonance this season through chamber music — where the interconnection and dialogue between numbers of “3”, “4” or more within a small ensemble setting transform these numbers into symbols of collaborative expression.
It also takes shape in larger ensembles and orchestral settings, where expanded forces unite to amplify these themes through shared musical explorations.
With “…3, 4!”, we seek to uncover new dimensions — how music can challenge, surprise, and shift perspectives on the ways we listen and perform.
“Curious about what Singapore and Southeast Asia’s future orchestras might look and sound like?
Go to Kent Ridge – home of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory – and watch this space.”
CHANG
TOU LIANG, THE STRAITS TIMES
Inspirational life-affirming music-making is at the heart of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) at the National University of Singapore. Centred in Singapore – one of the world’s most dynamic countries – while embracing a global perspective, we are uniquely placed to offer the world a distinct and powerful contemporary Asian voice.
Founded in 2003, YST has established a reputation as Asia’s most exciting international conservatory, nurturing a new generation of musical leaders in performance, composition, production, and community engagement. Our graduates are visible within Singapore and around the world as distinguished artists, leaders and musicians of top ensembles, trailblazing producers and creators, and inspiring educators. Across their diverse stories, they share a common home: the close-knit YST community which has an intentionally-small and internationally diverse student body, world-class faculty who are experts in their fields, and warm connections with alumni and the industry.
20 years ago, we began our journey with the Bachelor of Music (BMus) programme as our core educational focus. Over the years, our educational offering has expanded substantially to include graduate, continuing education, and young artist programmes, as well as course offerings for NUS undergraduates at large. Further, we engage the public in music through our extensive and accessible concert programming, community engagement initiatives, and the work of our Centre for Music and Health.
“YST nurtures not only eminent musicians, but also excellent leaders and entrepreneurs. It hones artistry, engages the community through music, and equips musicians with diverse capabilities for a rapidly-evolving 21st century.”
Beyond Singapore’s shores, YST connects with an extensive international network. We engage in robust bilateral partnerships with top music schools and actively contribute in higher music education alliances including ConNext, the International Benchmarking Group, Pacific Alliance of Music Schools, Southeast Asian Directors of Music, and the European Association of Conservatoires. These ties translate into greater opportunities for our students and graduates, be it through access to prominent artists visiting the Conservatory, or pathways to gain international exposure abroad. They also energise our work by offering us a keen perspective on global evolutions in the arts and education industries.
In all that we do, we are deeply grateful for the philanthropic support that enables us to nurture excellence. Major gifts from the Yong Loo Lin Trust make it possible for us to offer full tuition support for all our undergraduate students. Our generous donors also create opportunities such as student access to fine string instruments (through generous loan from the Rin Collection); eminent visiting artists such as András Schiff, Masaaki Suzuki and Nobuko Imai (through the Ong Teng Cheong Professorship in Music); and career development funding for students to forge their own distinctive paths through festivals, competitions and self-initiated projects.
With ‘Listen in New Light’ as our guiding principle, YST is well-positioned to lead change in the music and higher music education sectors. We seek to continue creating new possibilities for what a 21stcentury conservatory can be, and what it can contribute, in the world.

Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium
21 & 22 February (Fri & Sat), All Day
Various Venues | Free with Registration
The Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium brings together a diverse group of artists and practitioners from across the region to engage in a critical exploration of improvisation through performance, dialogue, and collaboration.
Building on recent shifts in European music education over the past decade, where improvisation has gained recognition as both an art form and academic discipline, this inaugural symposium draws on the vibrancy of musical cultures and contemporary developments in the Asia-Pacific region — which provide a rich foundation for exploring improvisation, not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a useful tool for music education.
Look forward to two days of engaging presentations, discussions, and performance showcases, with artists including Taceti Ensemble (Thailand), Hanoi New Music Ensemble (Vietnam), weird aftertaste music (Singapore), and the Bridge Ensemble which draws together faculty from YST and LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore). The symposium culminates in a closing concert with the YST Orchestral Institute – featuring a dynamic programme of beloved orchestral works and collaborative creation inspired by the city and its soundscape.

Collaborative Creation: ‘We Build This City’
GEORGE GERSHWIN
ed. MARK CLAGUE
An American in Paris
“Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don’t you remember? We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll.” – Starship, from We Built This City
Just as cities are built on innovation, unity and change, music comes alive through the dynamic interplay of structure, collaboration and artistic expression. Each contribution, small and large, forms a building block to the growing complexity and vibrance of the whole.
From the poetic lyricism in hidden corners of Aaron Copland’s jazz-infused Clarinet Concerto (performed by YST Concerto Competition 2024 prizewinner Zheng Shanxi (BMus3)) to the pulse of city streets in George Gershwin’s An American in Paris (in Mark Clague’s new critical edition), each piece highlights the collisions of cultures and ideas that define both urbanity and musicality. Witness as well how our orchestral musicians create, curate, and improvise the sonic structure of this cityscape in ‘We Build This City’, a new collaborative creation that will form the central panel in this urban triptych.
Journey with us through these soundscapes of urban life, and experience the synergies of musical creativity in this closing concert for the Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium.

Subito con forza
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Overture to Egmont
SERGEI RACHMANINOFF
Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
We round off the …3, 4! season with powerful orchestral masterworks from across times and contexts, presented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai.
The concert begins with South Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza (suddenly with force), composed in honour of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in 2020. The piece draws inspiration from his constant search for new directions and use of enormous contrasts, “from volcanic eruptions to extreme serenity”.
Aptly, we then follow this homage with Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont, one of his most popular works conceived for the stage (for a Goethe tragedy), and an expression of triumphant martyrdom outshining tragedy. Concluding the evening is Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, an emotional “tour de forza!” – one of the composer’s most beloved orchestral works, written after a deep depression after the premiere of his first symphony; a true celebration of artistry in the face of adversity.
