WHAT’S ON

A warm welcome to our new concert season! This year, we celebrate YST’s 20th anniversary, with the overarching spirit Looking Back, Moving Forward.
At this special milestone, we look back on the past 20 years with pride for what has been achieved, and gratitude for the support that has made it possible. But we also move forward with a con dent momentum as we continue to create new possibilities for higher music education.
For us as a conservatory, the foremost re ection of our work lies in the growth of our students and alumni. This semester’s programme aptly o ers a strong showcase of their talent.
We begin the semester with alumni Ensemble-in-Residence Lorong Boys performing original works set to lm (13 Jan). Further synergies abound with the YST Orchestral Institute and Red Dot Baroque (18 Feb) exploring musical evocations of battles, and Head of Strings Prof Qian Zhou with violin alumni in Blossom (11 Mar). We also present our three Concerto Competition Prizewinners in concert (2 Feb) and look forward to Emergence (9 Feb), a concert wholly curated and presented by our Year 4 cohort at the Victoria Concert Hall. Also not to be missed: the YST Orchestral Institute Awaking the Titan (21 Mar), performing Mahler’s 1st Symphony (‘Titan’) with a collaboratively composed prelude.
It is also our pleasure to present Ong Teng Cheong Professor in Music Nobuko Imai (17 Feb), the celebrated Miro Quartet (31 Mar), Quartet-in-Residence T’ang Quartet (3 Mar) in recital, alongside numerous other visiting artists across the semester.
Finally, we mark YST’s 20th anniversary with a gala concert of Haydn’s The Creation (8 Apr) performed by the YST Orchestral Institute, Voice studio and Chamber Singers – a thematically and musically apt celebration of the Conservatory’s founding two decades ago.
As we move forward, we welcome you to join us and are delighted to celebrate each step with you through music.

Film Score - music composed and recorded speci cally to accompany a lm. But what happens when we reverse the process? In their latest endeavour, the Lorong Boys set out to compose seven original works of varying styles and then, working together with various teams of proli c videographers, accompany the music with lm.
Lorong Boys are award-winning Singaporean musicians who are equally at home playing on the hallowed stage of a concert hall as well as on the streets of the heartland – hence their group name, which takes after the Malay word for “alley” or “lane.” Founded in 2014, they burst onto the Singapore music scene when their spontaneous performance on the MRT train became a viral hit on social media. They have since become feted for their vivacious energy, spontaneity and a nity for sharing music –qualities which have endeared to audiences everywhere.

As part of the Orchestral Institute’s Concerto Prizewinner series, we showcase three winners from YST’s 2022 Concerto Competition, who after competing in a series of preliminary and nal rounds within their instrumental family groupings, were awarded an opportunity to perform with an orchestra within Singapore. On December 11, 2022, third-year pianists Cheryl Pandora & Viona Sanjaya were featured soloists with the Orchestra of the Music Makers, performing the Francis Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos, at SOTA as part of OMM’s annual Orchestra Camp. Tonight we feature three outstanding students – serendipitously performing a set of concertos all infused with post-romantic nationalistic identities: Armenia via Aleksandr Arutiunian’s Concerto for Trumpet, Poland through Karol Szymanowski’s rst Concerto for Violin, and Bohemia in Antonín Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto. Come hear the Orchestral Institute as we collaborate with YST student soloists Nuttakamon, Meng and Jiaqi, as they showcase their outstanding talents!

Biber’s Battalia à 10, and Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony in C – each composition a story-telling of familiar battles that have perennially plagued, confronted, and de ned our shared humanity. Di erent in shape and form these battles may be – spiritual or physical, distantly mythological, or bitingly real – they demand resilience and unwavering hope towards a better future. Laced with empathy and valiance, we o er musical prayers for Halcyon Days (Alcyone’s namesake): an idealised space where peace and calmness prevails, even if eetingly.

GUSTAV MAHLER x Students of the Orchestral Institute Symphony No. 1 in D Major, “Titan”
I walked across the elds this morning; dew still hung on every blade of grass. The merry nch spoke to me: “Hey! Isn’t it? Good morning! Isn’t it? You! Isn’t it becoming a ne world? Chirp! Chirp! Fair and sharp! How the world delights me!”
As a twenty-something conductor-composer, Gustav Mahler’s mind was brimming with musical ideas that sought to capture the earthly, the divine, and everything in between — an artistic vision he would eventually translate into monumentally grand symphonies. The YST Orchestral Institute in collaboration with YST Visiting Professor, Karst de Jong, presents Awaking the Titan, a reimagined presentation of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, initially subtitled “Titan” by the composer himself, and the rst large-scale embodiment of the composer’s artistic vision. In addition to restoring Mahler’s original ve-part conception, which includes the lyrically sublime “Blumine (Blooming)” movement, the students of the Orchestral Institute will premiere a collaboratively composed Prelude as a responsive frame for Mahler’s iconic work. Come help us awaken the dawning of a post-pandemic Spring with YST’s Orchestral Institute and Gustav Mahler’s Titan!

The Miró Quartet is one of America’s most celebrated string quartets, having performed throughout the world on the most prestigious concert stages. For twenty- ve years the Miró has performed a wide range of repertoire that pays homage to the legacy of the string quartet while looking forward to the future of chamber music by commissioning new works and collaborating with some of today’s most important artists. Formed in 1995, the Miró Quartet has been awarded rst prize at several competitions including the Ban International String Quartet Competition and Naumburg Chamber Music Competition; and in 2005, became the rst ensemble ever to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant. The Miró is quartet-in-residence at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, OR and Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival in Washington State. The Miró Quartet took its name and its inspiration from the Spanish artist Joan Miró, whose Surrealist works — with subject matter drawn from the realm of memory, dreams, and imaginative fantasy — are some of the most groundbreaking, in uential, and admired of the 20th century.

FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN Die Schöpfung (The Creation), Hob. XXI:2
A secret voice whispered to me: “In this world there are so few happy and contented people; perhaps your labour will become a source in which the audience, riddled with the anxieties of the everyday, will for a while nd peace and solace.”
Franz Joseph Haydn, on the inspiration for “The Creation”
Franz Joseph Haydn’s 1798 oratorio, Die Schöpfung (The Creation), demonstrates the composer at the height of his creative powers, writing in a style that looks back – e.g. through its neo-baroque emulation of Handel’s choruses – while forging imaginative ways to move forward: i.e. from the dramatic perspective.
As YST commemorates its 20th Anniversary, Haydn’s n de siècle contemplation on the creative process itself seems particularly apropos. The Creation’s libretto fuses Biblical texts from Genesis and the Psalms with passages from Milton’s Paradise Lost, re ecting Haydn’s spiritual devotion as well as his embrace of the German Enlightenment. Two hundred years later, and a half-world away, it was a similar enlightened cosmopolitan impulse that inspired the inception of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Come join us, and celebrate this special Gala Concert with Haydn’s joyous Die Schöpfung!
YST Trombone Weekend 2023 brings together a stellar lineup of local and international trombonists leading masterclasses and performing in recital. Participants can also expect to play in group classes and chamber ensembles. Bring your instrument, tell your friends and get ready for a weekend full of music!
We look forward to welcoming you! Event details and schedule will be updated via email once registration is completed. Visit ystmusic.nus.edu.sg for registration information.
Founded on the basis of educating aspiring violinists, the Singapore Violin Festival (SVF) seeks to position Singapore as a world-class hub for classical strings music performance education in Asia.
SVF brings together an international panel of world-renowned musicians to offer guidance to aspiring violinists through masterclasses, concerts and enrichment classes. Through its rigorous programme, SVF provides a valuable opportunity for violinists to achieve a higher level of mastery and to develop maturity and sensitivity towards performance.
Human experience is lled with owing resonances: from distant stars, to temple bells, from concert stages, to the creative depths translated into a musical phrase – being a performer present is embodying owing resonances.
As the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music celebrates its 20th year, we re ect upon musical resonances owing in and out of Southeast Asia and particularly – since hosting its inaugural artistic research symposium in 2009 – towards the global synergistic growth in the eld of artistic research. As with our four previous artistic-research symposia, Flowing Resonances seeks to address the kaleidoscopic issues facing musicians as they develop their musical art; creative practices rippling within the repercussions of global socio-political shifts – including the 2020 pandemic, the climate crisis, and the everevolving digital landscape – all challenging and inspiring what it means to be a twenty- rst century musical artist.
Come join us, and the global artistic-research community at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, from October 25-28, 2023 to enjoy performances, presentations, re ections and musical fellowship all focused on furthering the evolution of creative practices in music throughout Southeast Asia, and beyond, at Performers(‘) Present 2023: Flowing Resonances
