There is something so primal and ageless about humans’ desire for excitement. From expeditions into uncharted territories, holidaying in exotic destinations, to the gleefully simple thrills of the merry-go-round — we are creatures shaped by adventure.
Latin America has long captured the imagination of locals, travelers, and dreamers alike, spawning dynamically diverse works of literature, art, and music. Named after 15th century Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, the continent has birthed countless generations molded by historical upheavals yet grounded with passionately resilient cultures perennially pulsating with irresistible vibrancy.
In this programme, we will experience the richness of Latin America through a kaleidoscope of musical evocations. Come join us on a ride to remember!

Mathemusical Encounters in Singapore: A Diderot Legacy

Registration via bit.ly/mathemusical24
Mathemusical Encounters in Singapore: A Diderot Legacy marks the 25th anniversary of the original Mathematics and Music Diderot forum. Co-hosted by the Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, it is an occasion to recognise the continued growth of mathematics and music and its foundational role in broader mathemusical applications ranging from music technologies to performance creativity to digital therapeutics, and to lay the groundwork for future directions in the interdisciplinary research field of Mathematics and Music.
Featuring keynote presentations by Martin Rohrmeier (Digital and Cognitive Musicology Lab, EPFL), Cheng-Zhi Anna Huang (Université de Montréal Google Brain), Julian Thayer (UCI Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory), and Andrew Milne (WSU, Australia).
Look forward to concerts by Margaret Leng Tan, Gérard Assayag and OMax — an artificially intelligent (AI) software environment which learns in real-time typical features of a musician’s style and plays along interactively through machine co-improvisation.

Carion Wind Quintet’s fresh approach to chamber music has brought acclaimed performances around the world. The ensemble has received most favourable critique for their interpretation of Carl Nielsen, Jacques Ibert, and especially the Six Bagatelles by György Ligeti. Carion has worked with contemporary composers like Jeppe Just, Renāte Stivriņa, and Anders Nordentoft, its innovative and colourful programming being made possible by Carion’s own horn player, David M.A.P. Palmquist.
Carion holds an Ong Teng Cheong professorship at YST.

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
One of the magical elements of performative art is its inherent ephemerality. Musicians, whether they are the concerto soloist, the conductor, or the supportive tutti orchestra, intuitively understand the wonderfully fleeting nature of a concert performance. When composers capture the creative spark — in Prokofiev’s case, the musical-portrait vignettes of his Visions Fugitives — they also tap into these fleeting resonances.
Come join us for this concert featuring a selection of Prokofiev’s Op. 22 piano miniatures arranged for a full orchestra by students from the YST Composition Studio, as well as two vibrant concerto performances: Karol Szymanowski’s Concerto for Violin No. 2 — the composer’s last major work — celebrates Polish highlander folk traditions and features YST concerto prizewinner violinist Leonid Datsiuk, while Rachmaninoff’s triumphant Piano Concerto No. 2 — representing the composer’s victory over his own creative fugitives — will be wonderfully captured by YST concerto prizewinner pianist Wang Chien-Jou.

Friday, 15 March -
Saturday, 16 March
6pm Conservatory Concert Hall Free Admission
Every year, the Conservatory Concerto Competition brings together YST Year 2 and 3 students to compete for the opportunity to play their chosen concerto with the YST Orchestral Institute, in a celebration of performance excellence and artistry.
Following a series of preliminary rounds within instrumental family groupings, the first and secondplaced musicians from each area take the stage over two evenings. They will perform a complete work of their choice with piano accompaniment, assessed by an international panel of adjudicators.
Join us in witnessing this showcase of student talent, and find out who our next Concerto Prizewinners will be!

Students from the NUS Symphony Orchestra (NUSSO) and YST Orchestral Institute come together in a side by side concert for the first time, united by a shared love for music as they perform orchestral classics, conducted by Assoc Prof Chan Tze Law (Vice Dean at both YST and the NUS Centre for the Arts).
For years now, NUSSO and student soloists from YST have collaborated in the yearly Miniatures chamber concerts. In celebration of the deepening relationship between YST and CFA, this concert takes the collaboration to the next level in a programme of symphonic classics reprising the YST orchestra’s inaugural concert just over 20 years ago.

Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068
Easter Oratorio, BWV 249
It would be difficult to find works by Telemann and Bach which better represent the optimism and rejoicing of the Eastertide messages of hope and renewal which follow great loss. Telemann’s Die Donnerode (Thunder cantata), written in response to the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755, reflects the optimism of rebuilding and renewal while dramatically illustrating the immense power of God. Bach’s Easter Oratorio begins with celebration of the discovery of the empty tomb and what that signifies for the world in terms of renewal and rebirth. Rounding out the programme is Bach’s ever-popular Orchestral Suite No. 3, performed with a resplendent band of period instruments including baroque trumpets, oboes and timpani.
Joining the voice majors and alumni again in this performance is Red Dot Baroque, led by Artistic Director Alan Choo from the violin. Students from the Orchestral Institute perform side-by-side with members of Red Dot Baroque in a unique mentoring programme on baroque performance practice, as part of RDB’s Ensemble-inResidence offerings at YST.

Humanity’s enduring, seemingly morbid fascination with death, is delicately balanced by a profound longing for transcendence. We sense this especially when thinking of our artist-heroes. Every detail surrounding their demise, every “last”, becomes ever more noteworthy — their last days, last words, last works.
Often, we are moved by the profundity of composers’ final works, prompting us to ponder: did they sense the approaching end? Did they sense a ‘beyond’?
Concluding a season of “Flowing Resonances” and 20th Anniversary celebrations, join us for an exquisite hour of “Sunset Cavatine” — little songs that capture the bittersweet and heart-wrenchingly confessional moments of life’s farewells. As we reflect on the journey thus far, much has come to past, yet an equal measure of anticipation awaits.
