OUR JOURNEY
2019
Youth in Arts achieves our mission in three distinct ways: through direct arts education, through support for educators, and through advocacy for equitable arts education access throughout the state and nation. The 2019-2020 school year found us as always, delivering high quality arts education to students throughout the Bay Area, and in mid-March of 2020 schools closed and everything changed.

OUR RESPONSE
When schools closed we immediately responded with #YIACre8tes: free 8-minute visual art and dance lessons livestreamed on social media, to help keep kids creative and engaged. The response was incredible! We instantly saw a significant jump in our number of followers, helping us share our story and reach over 1,000 students daily.

We had to move all of our in-classroom programs to a digitally distant learning model. Amazingly, we maintained all of our partnerships with different remote learning solutions and delivered access to creativity to nearly 10,000 students.

Our award-winning teen A Cappella group, ‘Til Dawn continued to rehearse on Zoom, which was a challenge given the limitations of harmonizing online. They quickly adapted the way they work to focus on songwriting and social emotional development. ‘Til Dawn released online performances and launched virtual showcases organized and produced by the group themselves.
With the YIA Gallery closed to the public, we innovated to create online art exhibitions that included bilingual at-home art activities such as story time, and a downloadable coloring book of children’s art. We continue to develop engaging ways to make our art shows accessible from home!

We created a board matched Covid Relief Fund to help pay our teaching artists as they shifted their programs online, help provide sanitary art supply kits for our students most impacted by the Covid crisis, and to sustain our work while we transitioned to virtual learning. Our community showed up like never before and we exceeded our fundraising goal by 30%!
We livestreamed #YIACre8tes on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube all 60 days schools were closed in the 2019-2020 school year, reaching thousands of students learning at home throughout the country.

Youth in Arts believes access to creativity enables young people to ask difficult questions of themselves and of the world. Equity is at the center of our work. We began providing free livestreamed #YIACre8tes Conversations to spark dialogue between children and their families on topics of race, identity, and racism.

Partnerships are vital to our work. This spring, we partnered with the Marin County Office of Education to create a bilingual and mutlidisciplinary video series exploring observing nature through art. The series was broadcast on local cable for students without access to wifi. Youth in Arts continues to partner with MCOE to support students and teachers across the county.

Thanks to our valued donors, our first virtual fundraiser auction, the Sip & Bid was a big success. The event raised over $30,000 to support the creation of our new online learning platform, YIArts.COR.

SIP &BID
Our family is growing and we could not be more thankful. In 2019-2020 we received the most individual donations in over a decade. To thank our donors for their outstanding support, we created a virtual donor ‘Thank You’ puzzle to be displayed on the homepage of the YIArts.COR.

FUTURE
Our next chapter...
Take a tour through the YIArts.COR, our new Creative Online Resource offering direct access to digital courses taught by professional teaching artists designed to inspire, spur curiosity and keep students engaged in virtual or hybrid learning.
We are already reaching over 4,000 students throughout the Bay Area with quality visual arts, music and dance programming housed on the YIArts.COR.

Partnering with HeadsUp Public Education Foundation and San Rafael City Schools, we are reaching every K-5th grade student in our local school district, enabling us to make critical progress in addressing the equity gap in our community, for the first time in our 50 years.
As schools attempt to navigate the new world of virtual and hybrid learning art is often being excluded from remote learning or hybrid re-entry plans - this is where Youth in Arts comes in.

We need you! Your support will help us reach students of all abilities through virtual arts learning in this incredibly challenging time for students, educators, parents and communties. We can make a difference in the lives of our young people by amplifying their creative voices!
