CREATING WITH PEOPLE AT THE CENTER

Emilia,

Principal, Bahia Vista Elementary School

“Having Youth in Arts at Bahia Vista is an absolutely incredible opportunity for our students to be enriched by the arts. They are so engaged in their music and movement experience. They are building language as well as a love and joy for the arts – it’s more than I could have ever asked for!”

Bryce, Kindergartener, Coleman Elementary School

“I love getting to make cool objects in art. Art makes me feel happy. Art is one of my favorite things to do.”

Rosie, 2nd Grader, Laurel Dell Elementary School

“It’s super, super fun because I get to dance and my family dances a lot – Mexican and Hawaiian dancing. It makes me feel warm inside!”

Suzanne, Board Member

“I wanted to become involved with Youth in Arts in order to empower our community’s students – many of whom have had limited or no access to the arts at school – to express themselves, to experiment, and to grow through art. Hearing these students’ voices, as they sought to understand and shape the world – I knew I had to support Youth in Arts.“

Sarita, Board Member

“Artistic influence in our youth is mandatory, not optional in growing a healthy community which is sustainable. Seeing Youth in Arts work as a Board Member gives me confidence that when people are operating at a heart-centered level with the competency skills and a vision, anything is possible.”

Brian, Teaching Artist

“Youth in Arts gives me the supportive and encouraging framework to base my teaching on my strengths and musical experience. There is a real intention and support network to help me grow as a teacher and support, and the communities and schools we work with are wonderful. I think of it all as a partnership.”

Dan, 5th Grader, San Pedro Elementary School

“I like having all the art materials at school. When I’m bored I draw and it makes me feel better.”

Ester, 3rd Grader, Coleman Elementary School

“I like everything about doing art; I like it more than anything. It makes me feel happy.”

Steve, MCOE Teacher, College of Marin

“I love the enrichment Youth in Arts provides our students. Their instructors are top notch. They encourage creativity while at the same time taking into account the diverse needs of our students.”

Kirah, Teaching Artist

“There is an openness to Youth in Arts that is very unique; it’s been extremely special to have such continuous support from every part of the organization. There is unwavering support every step of the journey and a real approachability; it’s such a beautiful thing and so appreciated as a Teaching Artist.”

Ayden, Kindergartener, Bahia Vista Elementary School

“I like to make rhythms with my hands on the drums.”

Susan, `Til Dawn Parent

“‘I FOUND MY PEOPLE!’ That’s what my kid said when they walked in the house after their first `Til Dawn rehearsal. Rai’s musicality and confidence are thriving, and they continue to profess their gratitude for being part of such an artistic, emotionally expressive and safe “family.” We couldn’t be happier with what YIA has brought to our child’s life.”

Elliana, `Til Dawn Member

Nish, Kindergartener, Coleman Elementary School

“Art makes me think of painting and drawing with my friends. I like using lots of colors.”

“`Til Dawn is a powerful space with wonderful individuals. Through our companionship, our individual passion with music we create, and our interchangeable love for each other, I have been able to establish `Til Dawn as my forever family.”

The last two years changed us all by challenging us to pause, look inward, and consider who we wanted to be, and how we wanted to live in a post-crisis world; Youth in Arts was no exception. The pandemic taught us a tremendous amount about our organization; its resilience and tenacity; its imagination and creativity, and most importantly its impact. We rediscovered the importance of Youth in Arts’ work and its reach far beyond the art room – supporting students, school communities, and families during a turbulent time.

We reflected on who we really are and what we do through our mission and work. We listened to our community: informed by surveys, focus groups, open forums, and deep internal discussions. The result of this intentional investigation was a re-alignment of our core values and guiding principles. The big take-away was that PEOPLE are at the center of all of our work and legacy – the students we serve, our teaching artists, our staff, classroom teachers, administrators, district partners, local leaders, and you, our valued supporters. People are who make Youth in Arts thrive. People are who Youth in Arts impacts. People drive Youth in Arts’ mission forward.

Centering PEOPLE as our strategic priority after two years of crisis, refocused our work from the inside out. From every policy to program, we are investigating and refining how we work, who we serve, and what we do. Youth in Arts continues to deliver intentional arts programs directly to students, provides support for educators, and advocates for equitable arts education – these are our programmatic pillars. Now, we move forward with determination to honor, amplify, serve, and support the PEOPLE that are Youth in Arts. In this report

share with you the PEOPLE that comprise the YIA community – see their faces and discover their unique perspectives.
