Editor's note Can we learn to have time to and for ourselves. I know we will be going up and down during the festive holidays and not resting. We only have one body, brain and being, so we need to take care of ourselves so that we can see all that God has for us in the coming year.

Imagine God blessing you with a car and you are so worn out mentally that you don’t drive it to enjoy it but you drive just to arrive where you are going. Or a new job and you drag yourself to work every morning because you are not in a good space.

I know it's quarter to holidays and we seem to go wild during the Christmas holidays. Let's enjoy our time with family in a responsible way and come next year rejuvenated to carry ourselves for the next 12 months. Let's be careful because covid 19 is not completely done or finished. There is a new variant and it is said to be more dangerous than the past variants. Let's social distance, mask and sanitise until it is safe for everyone.

I love you but God loves you more

TIME OF GIVING Written by: K. M NTEBANG

As we approach the festive season, we have to remind ourselves of the most important part of our lives. We must learn and appreciate what God has gifted us with and we must remember that as we celebrate, there is someone somewhere who has not been as fortunate as we have been, who has not had food for days or has slept on the streets during harsh weather conditions or has not had proper warm or clean clothes to wear. We learn from Deuteronomy 15:7-11 (NKJV) that, “if there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, the seventh year, the year of release, is at hand, and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become a sign among you. You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. For the poor shall never cease from the land; therefore, I command you saying, you shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land”. Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 4

Let us also remember that our giving need It is important to note that the word of God encourages us to give willingly, we must never feel like we are being forced to give to the poor because it will not be regarded as a pleasing sacrifice to God. If we give and expect a reward in return, it is also not considered an act of kindness. Our reward in caring for the poor and needy shall come from God, all in good time. During this year’s festive season, let us remember in a very special way, those who have lost their loved ones due to Covid-19, those who have been gravely affected by the virus in the form of health challenges, financial difficulties brought about by loss of jobs, reduction in earnings, loss of business or otherwise. Let our compassion reach beyond our blood relations and friendships to reach even those who find themselves being mentally disturbed by the aftermaths of this virus.

not be in material things only but also through our time and even our effort/works of our hands. As we celebrate the remembrance of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us also release through our prayers to the whole world God’s healing power, may He extend His healing hand over us and bless us all. We close this talk with a look at Psalm 41:1-2, which says, “blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be blessed on the earth; you will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.” Our kindheartedness shall obtain recognition from above and earn us divine protection from our Father who is in Heaven. Therefore, this is just to urge us all to always extend a helping hand to those in need because that will please God.

REAL TALK

Written by: Malebogo Lepere

Have you ever seen a young convert on fire for God and hungry for a touch from God? This person changes their ways and becomes a new creature because of the fire that is burning inside of them. The salvation prayer recited with their whole mind, spirit and body. The road of Christianity seeming exciting and promising. Then, something happens, like the death of a loved one, heartbreak or betrayal and they go back to their old ways or they change their lifestyle. They forget all about the fire that was burning looking at what they are experiencing now. It’s all about having fun, living for the moment and not worrying about tomorrow. In the last issue, we discussed how when you ask in prayer, you need to believe and see (in your mind) what you are asking. This read will be focusing on why sometimes people backslide in their Christian journey. To help us discuss this further, 1 Corinthians 16:13 will be our verse in understanding what we need to do as Christians not to get weary to our destination. 1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong

Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 6

PUT UP YOUR SHIELD 1 Corinthians 16:13 simply means that in our Christian journey, there are things that you won’t have answers to, you are going to come across challenges but always be watchful in every situation because God does not change. Don’t be dismayed but believe the best out of the challenge you are going through by being brave and having strength from the Lord. Let’s break the scripture down as follows; guarding, faith, courage and being strong, to comprehend what we need to know so we do not turn back to our old ways.

Being strong means that we are dependent on the Lord. 1.

Being on your guard

Anything that is precious is always guarded. Our Christian journey is something you cannot touch but it is the most precious thing that the next person can’t take away from you. The money, cars and houses can be taken away but your Christianity cannot. You need to guard your walk. You cannot afford to just walk blindly without looking out at the danger road signs that are on the way. When you are guarding your Christian Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 7

. walk, you stay watching always. You are always alert of what goes around, behind and in front of your life. You cannot afford to be sleeping, not forgiving people, procrastinating, gossiping and not investing in your Christian life and expect to grow. Life can be full of challenges, sorrows, and tough decisions. But even in hardships, since we have been keeping guard, we know that there is nothing impossible with God. You continue to keep guard from victory. Have you ever seen people that have so much pain and hurt going on in their lives but they don’t show any form of stress or shame? Its because they trust in something high than them, (in this case God). You keep guard so that when challenges come, they do not swallow you but rather you speak the word of God over those challenges. If you are not keeping guard and just living your life without God, when a tough decision needs to be made, you start to wonder what you need to do because you have not been connected to the source (God).

How to keep guard Invest in your spirituality by reading the bible and other Christian books Pray daily Have an accountability partner Have fun by attending music concerts, and other refreshing moments.

2. Stand firm on your faith I believe that most people turn away from the Christian lifestyle because they were not guarding their walk and when trouble came, they blamed God for what happened because they never stood firm in their faith. Faith is believing in things unseen or out of your reach now. When you are sick, you believe that you are healed. People turn to God when they have situations and they forget that, tribulations are part of the journey. All you must do is sit still and trust the Lord more because it's out of your hands now.

3.

Be courageous

2 chronicles 15:7 (“But as for you, be strong and courageous, for your work will be rewarded.”) The Christian lifestyle is not smooth, but it has so many turns and downs. When you have faith the next thing to do is to be bold. Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one; bravery. Having faith doesn’t mean that you are not afraid of the future but you understand that God is allpowerful and all-knowing. He has the answers we need to face any challenge before us. God knows that we are going to need to be courageous because of the things we are going to come across.

4.

Be strong

Being strong does not mean that you are not hurting, It simply means that you view your problem as just a small matter. Being strong means that we are dependent on the Lord. The Lord gives strength to go on another day, even with the silent battles that people can not see. He gives you hope for tomorrow. How to be strong know that God is always there. Even in the driest times, when you just don't feel God's presence, know that He is there. Do a daily Devotional to ask for strength every day. Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 8

Get involved. Do not isolate yourself because it’s what the devil wants so he can tell you empty sweet lies Talk to someone. The best therapy is letting it all out. I believe that, to make the journey more interesting and worth it, we need to know and understand the above points and not expect an easy way out. When you know who God is and what is He capable of, nothing will be too hard for you. As we enjoy the festive season, let us guard our lives and don’t let anything that’s not supposed to shake us, bring us down. We are stronger than we think. Joshua 1:9 (“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”) can help us face hard situations with faith and confidence.

We had a chat with our very own. A young, female Motswana chef, multi-international award-winning recipe/ cookbook author, the list goes on and on. Let’s get to know her and her journey

YOUR BIOGRAPHY AND CAREER, PASSION AND TALENTS My name is Ompelege Moreosele and I am 29 years born and raised at Kalamare Village, commonly known as Chef Cathy. I am a fulltime food entrepreneur, recipe developer or writer, menu developer, food stylist and food consultant (since 2017) and have 5 years of experience in the food industry. I am the founder of food is life, I love cooking and dining on delicious foods. For her, food is life therefore must be fully enjoyed. Food is life won the award at Gourmand cookbook Oscars/ world awards for the first local recipe book, rated the best in the world under African Awards. I won a second award for AFRICAN COOKBOOK AWARDS 2021 Under Cookbook Category. I am the Owner of flavors food magazine Botswana, a former food writer or columnist for Midweek Sun newspaper and the host of an “earth grown” cooking show.

BRIEFLY SHARE YOUR CHEF JOURNEY My memories of food are very powerful. My earliest memory dates back to when I was about eight years old. I absolutely adored going to the farm with my grandmother, we used to get up really early in the morning on weekends to harvest vegetables, sorghum and maize. My grandmother would allow me to collect things like peanuts and maize for myself, and she would give me a small pot to cook what I collected using firewood to keep me busy so that I didn’t disturb her while she was busy processing and packaging food she harvested from the farm. She would compliment me with words like “your peanuts taste really good”, and “you grilled your maize very well”. That’s how I developed the love of cooking. I was raised by my grandmother who known by everyone in Kalamare for her fat cakes, mapakiwa (bread rolls) and serobe (offal). My passion for cooking was influenced by her, and her culinary prowess was passed down to me at a tender age. While growing up, I enjoyed spending time cooking with my grandma. Cooking is not only an art, but an avenue to express your feelings and to communicate emotions. I remember kneading the dough for fat cakes and peeling potatoes for her. Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 11

I completed form five in 2010 and, due to a lack of career advice, I ended up doing an associate degree in advertising. I didn’t have a passion for it, so I switched to business management. I got a job as a receptionist but I had a sense of my life is incomplete and that I had to start again. I decided I was going to do something that I loved unconditionally, which was cooking. I have not looked back. I told myself that cooking is an essential skill. I saved up to do my certificate in food preparation and cooking with Gaborone College of Culinary Arts and advanced into a diploma in culinary arts at Gaborone Technical College. It was the best decision I have ever made What is interesting about cooking, when some people feel like it’s a burden or Chao is that cooking is fun, therapeutic, cooking is art and people can actually show how they feel through cooking, it can express people feeling and reduce stress.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO WRITE A COOKBOOK The book is more than just a salad recipe book. Life on a Salad is a testament that with the right mix of creativity, persistence and innovative thinking, anything is possible in today’s world. My new book is a glimpse into unique salad recipes that feature local Botswana foods. There are mosutlhane (sorghum grains), letlhodi (lentils), black-eyed bean and samp salads that Batswana are not even aware of. I was celebrating my heritage with these recipes because I love telling the story of where I come from through food. I was also exploring the modern style that I gained from my culinary school. My recipe book is an indispensable tool for home cooks and a resource for serious cooks or professionals. The recipe book is a series of salads and salad dressing recipes that I Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 12

collected for the four years of my culinary arts training.

WHY CALL THE BOOK "FOOD IS LIFE" MOST PEOPLE THINK OR FEEL LIKE SALADS ARE BORING AND NOT TASTY, SO I AM AFFIRMING THAT THERE IS LIFE IN SALADS. PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT SALADS ARE THOUGHTLESS COMBINATION OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THAT ACCOMPANIES MEAT AND STARCH ON A PLATE. A WAY OF HYPING THE SALADS, INDEED THERE IS LIFE

All the recipes have been tried and tested. I prepared some during my exams at school and I experimented with some during in-service training at Marang Cresta Hotel, where I was allowed to explore and bring my creativity into the kitchen. I decided to focus on salads because I realised that between healthy, fast meals and reinventions from top chefs, salads have come a long way. When it comes to recipes, though, they still seem like an unlikely candidate of fruits or 1 to seek out. Salads are often viewed 2 as an extra, thoughtless combination 3 vegetables that accompany the stars of the plate. With this book, I’m revolutionizing eating salads in a country renowned for voluminous meat consumption. This is where my recipe book comes in to suggest interesting ways to layer new flavors, pair textures and try out new products to toss into the salad bowl. The recipes in my book are doable, packed with flavor and the ingredients are accessible. Some salads can be served as a main dish, an accompaniment, or whatever a salad aficionado is trying to explore. I would say that the days of salads’ portrayal as “less than”, feminine and exotic, especially in African culture, will be a thing of the past after users have engaged with my book.

WHAT FUTURE PLANS DO YOU HAVE

I have currently spread my wings and started a company called Food is Life. I supply kitchen equipment, do menu design, recipe development and testing food, cooking classes, instructional workshops, food styling, food magazine production, live cooking demonstrations, functions and corporate catering. I’m also currently working on my next book, which will be published next year, and I’m working on opening a culinary school or a training academy in Botswana.

HEAVENLY MUSIC

THE RHYTHM SECTION Written by Akhu A rhythm section is a core group of instruments within an ensemble that together play a groove/accompaniment under a lead instrument or vocalist. Most commonly, it is made of piano/keyboard, bass, drums, guitar. Together, the players of these parts define the style and unique character of the song or composition. The exact instruments of the rhythm section depend on the style and era. A jazz rhythm section was typically made of a piano, upright bass, and a drum set. Other ensembles like a salsa band will include percussions in addition to the drum set. The dance style will include a drum machine, an electronic synthesizer, and some midi loops.

Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 15

Let’s look at the rhythm section now in terms of the roles of the instruments. It is important to note that a specific instrument can fulfill multiple roles in an ensemble, for example, a band might have a single guitar playing both rhythm and the lead parts. The Drum set The drum set provides the beat. This does not mean that the drummer is the conductor or the metronome but he or she becomes the defining reference point of the groove. This role can be taken by a drum set, a drum machine, a hand percussion, beat boxing or a digital loop. The Bass The bass’s primary job is to define the harmonies, and thus, the harmonic rhythm of the piece. The bass plays the primary chord notes, generally matching the root and 5 with the strong beats of the measure, such as beat 1 and 3 in 4/4 time, 1 and 4 in 6/8, and just 1 in 3/4. Usually, at each new chord, the bass will play that chord’s root, and then create a bass line designed to reinforce or arrive at the essential harmony in every new measure in the rhythm section context, the bass will be particularly attuned to the drummer’s kick drum, careful to “lock in” or synchronize significant rhythmic hits with that instrument but drawing on the hi-hat’s subdivision for some of the articulations. In this way, the groove’s underlying rhythmic and harmonic structure reinforce each other. The role of the bass might be fulfilled by an upright bass (usually acoustic but sometimes electric), a bass guitar, a keyboard/synth bass sound, a tuba, a baritone saxophone, a cello, or any other low-pitched instrument.

Chordal Instruments (Keyboard/piano/guitar)

The third major rhythm section role is that of the chord-comping instruments, usually rhythm guitar and piano. This role is to provide the greater harmonic context for the piece. A “comping” (accompaniment) part is essential chords played with a repeating rhythmic structure. Because the drums play the most significant metric hits and the bass plays the most prominent chord notes (roots), the comping instruments are likely to build their parts around what’s missing: chord tones 3, 7, and tensions, and syncopated and sustained rhythms, using the drumbeat as its primary rhythmic reference. In this way, the comping instrument, bass, and drums together create a composite, each contributing a unique part to the greater whole. Typically, the comping instruments are rhythm guitar or piano, either of which can be electric or acoustic instruments. Other comping instruments include organ (e.g., the Hammond), synthesizer, accordion, vibraphone, or other instruments capable of playing chords.

A rhythm section is part of an ensemble. To complete it, there might be a vocalist, a melodic instrument (lead guitar, saxophone, etc.), background singers, a wind section, a string section, additional percussion, an orchestra, a choir, or any combination of these players.

HOW TO ENGAGE IN SELF-DISCIPLINE

FOR ENTHRONEMENT PART 3 WRITTEN BY: HARRY TAWIAH USSHER

As we end the year and start another one I believe that we have many regrets. Mainly because there are so many things we didn’t do right because we failed to discipline ourselves. As soon as the year started we set goals of living a more disciplined life and doing away with foolishness but that didn’t materialize as a result of indiscipline. Several of us said that we will not live anyhow again but we could not control our feelings. Some of us wrote in our diaries that we will no longer drink but we ended up drinking alcohol this year more than any other year. For most of us, our prayer lives are not okay, and we promised ourselves to pray more, but laziness took the better part of us. Quite a number of us could not discipline ourselves to read and study the Bible as we wanted. Instead, we allowed the spirit of slumber to dominate us. I believe many of us are aspiring to be leaders in certain capacities, so why then are we lazy to read? Have you come across a leader who does not read? Certain serious individuals have consumed about fifty to hundred books this year, but you are still holding the one you started three months ago. As a child of God you know that sex is not for the unmarried, so why are you engaging in something that has the power to destroy you completely? When Apostle Paul was preaching to the church in Ephesus he said fornication and all uncleanness must not be mentioned among the brethren since they have become saints.

Youthfulness is what you cannot get back so be careful what you do with your life and work hard to overcome indiscipline. Ephesians 5:3. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Equally, as a married person, why have you decided to defile your marital bed by bringing curses upon yourself and the family? In most cases, when two people meet to commit adultery they think they are just having sex. However, what they do not know is that they are digging their own grave; hear what the Bible has to say. Leviticus 20:10. “‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death. Hebrews 13:4. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 18

In our two texts, we hear the spirit of God talking to us about what will befall adulterers and adulteress because they lack discipline. May the Lord help us all to run away from an indisciplined lifestyle. For you to live a high discipline life you have to master your body. Since our bodies are such useless things that lack discipline. Therefore, if you allow it to overpower you, you will see never the glory of God in your life. Our bodies want and yearn to have sex meanwhile the Bible forbids fornication. Our bodies want to have extramarital sex meanwhile the Bible says we must not engage in such activities. Our bodies want to drink alcohol as it demands and live a lawless life, this is why you should not give in to the demands of the body else you are doomed. Apostle Paul said he subject his flesh, meaning he does not allow his body to dictate to him so should you. 1 Corinthians 9:27. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. He also said I die daily. Meaning he died to what his feelings were pushing him to do daily, according to 1 Corinthian 15:31. I face death every day—yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. Galatians 5:17 says. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want. In this scripture, we see that our flesh is always in contention with the spirit of God. Tempting us not to do the right things that will bring enthronement/elevation in our lives. Youthfulness is what you cannot get back so be careful what you do with your life and work hard to overcome indiscipline.

Here is something you have to understand as a young person. This is, anything you do not conquer as a young person, you will not be able to overcome it when you grow up. We have indisciplined old men and women all over the place as a result of what they could not deal with in their youthful days. The Bible in Ecclesiastes 3:27 talks about how good it is for a young man to bear his yoke in his youth. It is good for a man that he bears the yoke in his youth. A lot of people are in jail because of indiscipline. Certain people cannot get any form of employment because of indiscipline. People have died untimely because of indiscipline. We have those who cannot be faithful to one partner as a result of an indiscipline sexual lifestyle, and therefore are not fit for anyone to have as a spouse. May the Lord deliver us from the spirit of indiscipline in Jesus's name.

FITNESS TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY ONNEILE KEALOTSWE Fitness Instructor The festive season is around the corner. We tend to travel a lot during this time to visit families or to just relax on holiday. Unfortunately, during the holiday travels, the workout routine and eating clean gets thrown out of the window. It is no surprise that many of us see ourselves packing extra weight during the holiday season and start the year with unrealistic and somewhat dangerous weight loss routines. If you want to avoid the trap this year, you may want to consider the following:

PLAN AHEAD

If you are traveling, planning ahead can make all the difference. Take some time to figure out what your options are so you are ready for anything and pack appropriately.

3

KEEP MOVING

Avoid sitting for a prolonged period. Most of us will be with family catching up or just taking time off to watch tv or rest. These may result in prolonged periods of seating in one place and minimal movement. If you find that there is just no way to get in a workout, get creative and find ways to move your body any way you can. Try standing up now and then and walk around. If you are sightseeing, opt for walking instead of driving around or plan a game with the family that requires moving around

EXERCISE EARLY

The festive season can have a lot of distractions throughout the day, and this may lead to postponement of workout sessions if you prefer exercising in the afternoon or evening. The best thing is to workout first thing in the morning before the festivities start. Try switching to morning sessions.

Facing fear head-on

In each one of us there lays the potential to do great things. God created us with the ability to adapt and adjust to new environments that come with new challenges. This ability to learn and adapt this inborn and we are all born with it. I believe a good number of us can attest to the reality that this potential never goes unchallenged. And one of the biggest challenges to our potential is called FEAR. Fear can be an enemy of progress that hinders your growth or opportunity to graduate to greater heights in life. The questions emanating from fear are always on the negative, from within you will arise questions like “what if I fail? Will I manage?” With these questions come a lot of resistance and

BOOK REVIEW By R. Carlos Pius

Youthful4God | December Issue 22| Pg 26

TITLE: BROKEN AUTHOR: Trish Waboraro Kwati Contents: 8 chapters, 44 pages Price: BWP 100

When I bought Broken in 2019, I had something in mind; a change of mind and a challenge of the culture we have with relationships today. The title called me though I wouldn’t say I was that much heartbroken myself. Obviously when you see “BROKEN” your mind spells “go check it out, something is cooking,” and yes, something was cooking. If you hear things break in your house, you don’t just sit there and wait for the report, no! you jump to the incident (scene) either to rebuke or rescue. The title itself answers a lot of questions before you open the first page.

Trish shares with us what she went through and painted it with Biblical stories of people who got broken and got repaired. This is the true essence of living, this is how heroes live; they believe that no matter how difficult it is, no matter how deep the hells are, they will emerge victorious. There is no honor in running away from happiness and joy because of the problems or chaos people cause us.

When you read this book and have similar experiences as the author you will realize that she liberated you, if you never experienced any of it then you know how difficult it is for some people and that you may have to identify and help them genuinely. Just like I decided to get this book and find a way to address someone who might reject the help because of what I did, so should other men/women should do the same. As for me, I tried and as we speak I am friends with the lady I had “BROKEN” up, we talk about our past and laugh all the time. We forgive each other almost all the time, she is not scared of me anymore, neither is she hoping to have me dead.

Let us not think this book is for women alone, it is mostly for men because they are the ones who do more damage to women than women do to each other. If you see signs of a man close to you showing signs of anger towards women, gift him with this book as much as you will gift your female bestie with it. The author speaks to men and women, the young and the old and she hopes the message shall live throughout all seasons. I believe the message to stand until humans don’t harm each other or themselves anymore and I hope even beyond that, the book can be used as a reference to those who contributed to the liberation of humanity from brokenness.

Broken (the book) is short and precise in itself, straight to the point and no hidden messages between sentences and paragraphs; with only eight chapters and 40 plus pages you can get your answers in only a day or two. When broken or depressed you don’t want to spend days in a book that may have your troubles escalated before you finish it. Even if you are not a habitual reader, trust me this manuscript can work like a pill you swallow right now and wait for healing.

The book contains messages of faith in the Christian life, believing in Christ (God as the potter) and the importance of the relationship we can have with Him. The author showed us that there is no other life outside Christ, there is no peace, no solution for your emotional pains and no one can mend you except God. We are advised to seek help and try to speak out yet be careful who we seek help from since not all are happy for your desire to breakthrough, they want to use your situations for their joy. She (author) explained that some of our behaviors and rebellion are because of triggers from our backgrounds but that doesn’t mean we should explain away our failures or rebellions. In this case, beware of the devil's schemes, guard yourself, trust that you can do it and never give up. Blaming yourself can make matters worse, it can chain you to slavery.

As long as social ills still surface the face of the earth, I highly recommend the book to everyone who hopes for total peace and joy. Trish preached her troubles and preached her breakthroughs and if you follow her today, she is preaching joy beyond yesterday’s happiness so why should we let our lives go to waste because of temporal situations?
