YEAR ONE Empower young adults (18-20 year-olds) to develop skills and connect to opportunities by fostering an environment of love, support, and respect for their whole person. In Year One, we focus on cultivating a loving community where students can thrive and feel comfortable showing up as their most authentic selves. Students are supported holistically by a team of staff committed to helping them reach their full potential. Students' learning experiences are enriched with life skills development, job training and community service. During Year One, they focus on academics and hands-on learning while serving as part-time AmeriCorps members. Year One sets the stage for success in future educational and career endeavors. Courses in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science are taught by a team of educators who want learning to feel personal for each student. After successfully completing all coursework and requirements, students earn their high school diploma.
Academics Community service is a core part of every student's YouthBuild experience. All students are part-time AmeriCorps members and are required to complete at least 450 hours of service during Year One. Service projects occur through the school year with various community partners.

Student Success
Vocational tracks offered are: Building Trades, Healthcare, Childcare and Business Administration/ Customer Service. Through hands-on learning students gain workforce experience with the chance to earn an industry-recognized certification. Every student is assigned a Student Success Manager and a staff mentor to ensure that they are supported in every way possible during Year One. Success Managers connect them with resources, guidance and support through personal obstacles.
YEAR TWOÂ Students graduate high school and successfully transition to college and career as critically conscious leaders, committed to positive change for themselves and their communities. In Year Two, alumni remain connected and supported by the Career Development team and YouthBuild staff. Every student is assigned a staff mentor to provide them with guidance and assist with strategic goal-setting through an Action Planning process designed to help alumni successfully achieve their personal and professional goals. As critically conscious leaders, students aim towards higher education, job placement and/or career advancement to positively impact their lives and the lives of their families and community. Near the end of Year One our Career Development team prepares students for the next steps in their personal and professional journeys. Students are set up for success through supports such as job shadowing, internships, college classes, and job placement.
Bridge Programming Mentorship
YouthBuild Philly works with a host of employer partners who are ready to hire students and dedicated to helping them grow professionally. Students are connected to life-changing educational and employment opportunities.
Mentors provide encouragement and focus on goal-setting for short and long-term success. Many mentormentee relationships often lead to life-long bonds.

SERVICE BEYOND PHILLY Spring Break Service Trip in Utuado, Puerto Rico In April 2019, a select group of YouthBuild Philly staff and students spent their Spring Break serving and providing aid in Utuado, Puerto Rico, a community still feeling the effects from 2017's Hurricane Maria. Students worked to restore the home of a family who had been couch surfing amongst friends and family in the 18 months since the storm. At the conclusion of the project, the family was able to move into their new home the following week! Beyond the service, students were able to participate in fun excursions such as ziplining and rappelling, and were fully immersed into Puerto Rican culture by connecting with local residents, learning about the history of Puerto Rico and touring historic landmarks throughout Utuado and San Juan. The Spring Break Service Trip is a life changing opportunity for students as it expands their perspectives and reach beyond Philadelphia.
"It was a nice experience because I got to see another side of staff and students. Then we all came together to complete this one project. Even when we were doing service projects here in Philly, I would never see the end result. When we were in Puerto Rico and I saw the end result, it hit me different. I don’t know how to explain it or put that feeling into words."- Brittany, '19

RELATIONSHIPS MATTER At YouthBuild Philly, our programming places a deep emphasis on relationship building. We know that in order for students to thrive as life-long learners, they have to feel loved and supported. Through mentorship, career coaching, providing community resources and more, we have been able to create a culture that prioritizes our connection to students and their overall wellbeing.
"They teach you that you are more than what people try to make of you."- Shay, '19
"When we talk about support, it's holistic." - Doris Spears, Student Success Manager
"It's like having Kobe and Shaq. When you know it's somebody there and somebody can back you up, you can go anywhere and do anything."- Jymel, '19
"At YouthBuild Philly, you're not just a number. It's not just about where you are going after this. It's about who you are now and who you want to be."- Christina Neilson, Math Instructor
"Teachers literally come up to me and be like 'you got this, if you need help just come to me.' I didn't get that at my old school." - Ershay, '19 "I care about all aspects of you, and I am going to be here for you and watch you walk across that stage on graduation day. I think that is powerful and unlike anything our students have experienced in other schools."- Colleen Counihan, Former Program Operations Coordinator

SHYHEED '19 Excerpt from Shyheed McLeish's Graduation Speech Recipient of the YouthBuild Way Award The YouthBuild Way Award is awarded to the student who best exemplifies YouthBuild's core values of Respect, Excellence and Perseverance
"Before coming to YouthBuild, I went to 6 different high schools, but none of them were right for me. I even applied to YouthBuild before this year, but didn't make it through mental toughness the first time around. Coming back to YouthBuild has been the best 12 months of my life - plus during this year, I met my beautiful daughter Sahorah. YouthBuild made me step out of my element and do things I had never seen myself doing, including finishing the school year with over 100% attendance thanks to Saturday school and after school service events. I've worked so hard this year to become a better person, leader, and parent. I had the chance to represent my community and YouthBuild Philly at a conference in Washington, DC this year, and also travel with my peers to Puerto Rico to help families rebuild their homes after Hurricane Maria. These are just a few of the ways I was able to keep myself on track and grow as a leader. After graduating, I will be attending Community College of Philadelphia to study education on my way to being a teacher and mentor. My experience has shown me the importance of having more African American male educators as role models, so I'm stepping up and starting with myself. I didn't make this journey alone, so finally I would like to thank my family, my boy Corn, my old head Mr. Ron, Ms. Nikkia and last but not least Ms. Charla, my mentor. Without your love and support I wouldn’t be standing on this stage today."
- Shyheed McLeish, Class of 2019 17
