DearFriendsandSupporters,

As we reflect on the achievements and milestones of the past YB Philly academic year, we are thrilled to celebrate the highlights of the Class of 2023, our largest graduating class postpandemic. The leadership and many accomplishmentsoftheClassof2023represents a testament to the talent, dedication and resilience of YouthBuild students, educators, Board members, partners, and supporters across theCity

The Class of 2023 has left an unforgettable mark on our school and on our community. Student leaders rebuilt homes, brought green energy to neighborhoods across Philadelphia, ran a great community cafe in West Philly, shared their wisdom and perspective with elected officials in Philly and Harrisburg, prepared meals for community members, and cared for people in need Graduates successfully prepared for careers in customer service, construction, green building, health care, customer service and beyond. Graduates earned college credits and earned acceptance into colleges and training programs across the region And YB graduates completed community service to beautify a school, a community center, a park and they cared for spaces and people across our City.

We celebrate all the ways that the Class of 2023 has connected, learned, grown, and led More than 180 graduates supported each other, led in our community and shared their love and light withcommunitymembersacrossPhiladelphia.ThebrillianceandpositiveenergyofYBgraduatesin the class of 2023 has not only brightened our lives, but also set a precedent for future YouthBuild classestostriveforreaching.WelookforwardtothepositiveimpacttheClassof2023willhaveon theirfamiliesandourcommunities

Good Afternoon Everyone My name is Makiera Thompson It’s an honor to be standing before you as Salutatorian of our graduating Class of 2023 I would like to give a warm welcome to my fellow graduates, proudfamily, andguests

This school year for me has been everything I needed it to be Before COVID-19, I went to a traditional 4 year high school During my time there I didn’t feel any type of motivation or support from teachers or other staff However, at YouthBuild, the staff motivated me and supported me along the way by giving shoutouts at community meetings, receiving motivational texts, phone calls, if I was absent and allowing me the opportunity fornewexperiences.

Myjourneyoverthelastfewmonthshasbeenaneyeopener IgainedbackthingsthatIhaven'tseeninmyself for a while I'm more goal-driven, I’m dedicated to getting my work done and not accepting incompetence I havenewcareergoalsandIamfocusedonwhatmyfuturewillbelike I’vegainedexperienceandconfidenceat YouthBuild,Iwouldrathergoforthedifficultandmorechallengingthinginsteadoftheeasytask

I would like for you all to remember that life doesn't stop for anybody If you have the time and opportunity to accomplish something then just go for it. You never know when you'll get another chance. Don't say no out of fear, worries, oropinionsofotherpeoplethataren'tgoingwhereyouare.

I will leave you all with a piece of advice Our lives are a product of the decisions we make and not the circumstances that we find ourselves in No matter what is going on around us, it doesn’t define who we are or change what we are We have the ability to have control of our own lives Choose positive people and positive examplestoguideyou CongratulationsClassof2023!

After months of planning, Youthbuild Philly held the official groundbreaking ceremony for our new school building in early 2023, symbolizing the start of constructionforournewhome,settobecompletedbyJuly2024,justintime fortheClassof2025academicyear

It was an exciting time with great weather and high energy as we celebrated this milestone with our students, staff, partners, Capital Campaign leaders, and loyal supporters Scott Emerick, YouthBuild Philly’s executive director, opened the event with welcoming remarks and invited Maine Robbins, YB Philly 2016 Alum, and Melanie McCottry, YouthBuild PhillyBoardChair, tothepodiumtoshareafewthoughts.

We also invited Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, State Sen. Anthony Williams, and Sec. Akbar Hossain (Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Office) to join us as a guest speaker for the ceremony Each elected official played a significant role in helping YouthBuild Philly secure the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funds for our new building Their advocacy for this project and our overall mission has been instrumental inmakingthisdreamarealityforourschoolcommunity.

Marty Brigham, Chair of the YouthBuild Philly Steering Committee, closed the event out with appreciation and led us into the groundbreaking photo Students, Staff, Partners, and Elected officials gathered with hard hats and shovelsin-hand,preparedtotakethefirstdig.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the event.

AlumniProfile

Tarif (Class of 2023) came to YouthBuild after seeing firsthand the impact the school had on his two older sisters – even though the more recent graduate in the family had done her entire year virtually due to the pandemic Still, he was eager to step out of their shadows and show himself and those around him what he was capable of. “Most of the staff knew (my sister), but also recognized potential in me and saw how different we were, and that really meant a lot,” Tarif shares when thinking about his early days at YouthBuild.

Tarif’sleadershipdevelopmentcameaboutveryorganically, ashisinstructorsimmediately identified him as someone who could motivate others – even if he did so quietly. “YouthBuild really allowed me to come out of my shell,” he notes as he remembers very early conversations with a number of staff members who were particularly impactful on motivating him in those early days. Tarif remembers “Ms. Erika especially was someone who made me want to keep coming to school everyday and Mr Ron’s worksite really solidified that experience for me. ” Beyond these two staff members, Tarif reels off a handful of others – and almost a dozen peers – who were instrumental in motivating him tobethebestleaderhecouldbe.

While Tarif wasn’t always ready to step up for himself, he “knew that if I could make someone else’s day better, it would be a great day” This daily manifestation of leadership made Tarif a constant welcoming and friendly presence across various parts of YouthBuild’s programming – from a worksite leader to peer advocate, and from spokesperson in meetings with elected officials to team manager for the school’s basketball team. He was even selected to represent YouthBuild on a service trip to New Orleans and the surroundingregion

Page17

AlumniProfile

Tarif continued to grow into the leader others had seen, and eventually (but humbly) recognized himself as a leader as well. He began to grow more confident thanks to the feedback and reinforcement he got from friends, classmates and YouthBuild staff – “The self-doubt just sort of went away – I started to think ‘if I’m right about this, what else am I right about?’” After graduating with honors, Tarif had his choice between two distinct but successful postsecondary options: work orcollege

Tarif visited Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology twice during the school year, and on his second visit met with staff from the school’s renowned architecture program He was able to procure an invite to the program – but around the same time was also promoted at work to assistant shift lead, and again just a few weeks before he was scheduled to move onto campus to assistant store manager in-training At that point, he decided to defer on his decision to attend Thaddeus Stevens – “I knew that the option would always be there, so I wanted to keep the momentum I had going in my career ” Eventually, Tarif would like to be a full-time video game designer, andhisexperienceintheindustry(workingatGameStop)willpayimmediatedividendsas he continues to work on his game ideas – at Thaddeus, the architecture design software he will use isverysimilartothesoftwareengineshe’sbeentinkeringwithtobuildcurrentgames

Through it all, Tarif reflects on his time at YouthBuild with his usual humble manner – “the best thingIwasabletodoatYBwashelpputasmileonpeople’sfaces–that’sallthatmatters”
