MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

Dear friends and supporters, The 2020-21 school year was certainly one of the most complicated and challenging years we have ever faced here at YouthBuild Philly. We started our school year six months into a global pandemic and during the midst of the second major wave of the virus. The world was in a nearly constant state of change. Our students and staff worked hard to adapt to changes and to an almost entirely remote learning environment. Through constant changes and challenges, our students, staff, alumni, Board members, partners and community members were able to support each other and to persevere toward our individual and collective goals. The theme for this year’s Annual Report is “Virtually Together, Closer than Ever,” which embodies all that we were able to accomplish despite the physical distance between us. Although we could not be together in person, we continued connecting, supporting, learning and growing. The pandemic has challenged us to reimagine education as we evolve to meet the needs of our students. In this environment, we have done our best to maintain our commitment to our core values (respect, excellence and perseverance) and to our North Star of building a strong sense of community while also evolving our programming to meet the changing needs of students in a rapidly changing world.

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

As the first fully-virtual class in YouthBuild Philly’s history, the Class of 2021 has persevered and navigated challenges like no other! Staff and students were physically apart from each other for most of the year and most in-person events were canceled. But we found new ways to connect, to build community and to overcome barriers created by physical distance: We created virtual community meeting spaces via Zoom for our students to connect with YB staff and get to know their classmates. For our vocation students, we conducted home visits and delivered tool kits and supplies that would typically be used on worksites. This allowed students to follow along online and continue learning safely from the comfort of their homes. We also created the YB bike club and invited students to join us for rides around the city from the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Other activities included virtual movie nights, karaoke, and trivia. While the pandemic introduced a great deal of uncertainty into our lives, it never caused us to abandon our commitment to co-create the best possible leadership and learning experiences with our students. The pandemic has helped us reimagine new ways to pursue our existing mission.

As we close out this school year, we are incredibly grateful and PROUD of all that we were able to accomplish together. We are PROUD of the 144 student leaders who trusted us with their safety and their education during such a critical time in their lives. And, although challenges and hardships felt increasingly common over the last year, our YouthBuild community continues to prove that it is during our most difficult times of adversity that we can discover and demonstrate our true strength and power. Thank you for your continued support, Scott Emerick Executive Director Melanie McCottry Board Chair

YEAR 1

In Year One, we focus on cultivating a loving community where students can thrive and feel comfortable showing up as their most authentic selves. Students are supported holistically by a team of staff committed to helping them reach their full potential. Students' learning experiences are enriched with life skills development, job training and community service. During Year One, they focus on academics and hands-on learning while serving as part-time AmeriCorps members. Year One sets the stage for success in future educational and career endeavors. Courses in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science are taught by a team of educators who want learning to feel personal for each student. After successfully completing all coursework and requirements, students earn their high school diploma.

ACADEMICS

COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service is a core part of every student's YouthBuild experience. All students are part-time AmeriCorps members and are required to complete at least 300 hours of service during Year One. Service projects occur through the school year with various community partners.

Vocational tracks offered are: Building Trades, Healthcare, Childcare and Business Administration/ Customer Service. Through hands-on learning students gain workforce experience with the chance to earn an industry-recognized certification.

VOCATION

STUDENT SUCCESS

Every student is assigned a Student Success Manager and a staff mentor to ensure that they are supported in every way possible during Year One. Success Managers connect them with resources, guidance and support through personal obstacles.

12

YEAR 2

Students graduate high school and successfully transition to college and career as critically conscious leaders, committed to positive change for themselves and their communities. In Year Two, alumni remain connected and supported by the Career Development team and YouthBuild staff. Every student is assigned a staff mentor to provide them with guidance and assist with strategic goal-setting through an Action Planning process designed to help alumni successfully achieve their personal and professional goals. As critically conscious leaders, students aim towards higher education, job placement and/or career advancement to positively impact their lives and the lives of their families and community.

Near the end of Year One our Student Success team prepares students for the next steps in their personal and professional journeys. Students are set up for success through supports such as job shadowing, internships, college classes, and job placement.

Mentors provide encouragement and focus on goal-setting for short and longterm success. Many mentor/mentee relationships often lead to life-long bonds.

Melanie '21 CLASS OF 2021 VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH

"Good Morning class of 2021! I hope you all are doing well! I wanna give a HUGE congratulations to everyone here. Whether you’re a graduate, family member, friend, or faculty member, we all are here to celebrate an amazing accomplishment! We really had a whole year of COVID craziness, yet every person in this room made it through. We did it!

I also want to thank my AMAZING mentor Mz. Kim. You’ve gone above and beyond to motivate me, listen to me, and advise me through my chaotic journey. I will never forget you and the impact you’ve had on my life. Mr. Ant, you have truly inspired me through your passion for advocating for what’s right, and thank you for providing me with the skills to do the same. Mr. Rocchi, you’ve taught me so much about what it is to be an educator, thank you. Mrs. Natasha, you taught me the ins and outs of business, and being a mom on Zoom! Mr. Roman and Ms. Jody, I really loved having y’all as teachers, and thank you both for assisting me in preparing for my next steps. Every staff member at this school has been so amazing and supportive. The experience I’ve had at YouthBuild has inspired me to become a teacher myself & I cannot wait to share the lessons I’ve learned from you all with others." - Melanie Osborne

MY YB WHY During Mental Toughness, we launched the "My Why" campaign in an effort to motivate the Class 2021 ahead of the upcoming school year! We challenged each student to discover their WHY!

Alumni Profile

16

One on One w/Maionne Tyler Maionne Tyler (aka Mai) came to YouthBuild Philly as a fulltime mother, ready to reclaim her education. She set her sights on becoming a future social worker, chef or FBI agent and fully committed herself to achieving these goals and make a better life for herself and her family.

YB: What made you choose to pursue your education at YouthBuild Philadelphia? Mai: I decided it was time for me to go back to school and earn my high school diploma before it was too late. My daughter motivated me to go back as well.

YB: What was different about your time here at YouthBuild Philly compared to other experiences you had with past institutions? Mai: What stood out to me most during my time at YB was its way of helping its students connect with each academic course. Instead of teaching us traditional math, English, and history courses, YouthBuild added its twist to it. They taught us about life lessons like financial literacy, saving, and investing as well as resume & cover letter writing and applied it to whichever subject that it would fall under. We were still learning what we needed to learn to be successful after YB in the workforce, college, and life. I also liked that we got to do a trade.

YB: What vocation track were you enrolled in? Mai: I was in Child & Youth Development (CYD) with Ms. Mallory. She was such a great teacher – very supportive and caring, which I appreciated. I chose CYD because I always wanted to be a social worker or own a daycare. I love helping and supporting people.

YB: Did you experience any challenges during your time at YB, if any? Mai: So in March of 2021, my great-grandmother passed away. This was truly one of my hardest losses – it took a toll on my grades and my time at YB. I instantly lost my motivation to come to school during that time. My teachers never judged me and gave me my time and space to grieve. They reached out and offered their support and with a little push from my mentors and teachers, I found the strength to get back on track.

YB: How was it being a full-time mother and attending school at the same time? Mai: There were times that my daughter would be sitting on my lap while I was online in class. I would have to take short breaks in between classes to feed her a bottle and even change her diaper. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do – she was my biggest motivation to go to school every day.

YB: What is your overall WHY? Mai: I want to be a social worker. I did a lot of research before attending YB and realized that you can’t get far in life without at least getting your high school diploma. This was my opportunity to get it right and get back on track with achieving my dreams and goals. I love kids and I like to help people – that is my passion. The things that I wanted to do in life required me to get my degree.

17

One on One w/Maionne Tyler

YB: What motivated you to keep pushing and get to the finish line? Mai: The support that YB provides is unmatched! They make you feel a part of their family and keep you on track. My teachers and mentors kept me focused. Even though the school year was completely virtual, I still felt so connected to each of my teachers. Shout out to Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Danyelle, Ms. Erin, Mr. Rich, and Ms. Mallory. Ms. Erin was also one of my biggest motivations. She made it a priority to check in on me every day to see how my day was going – that made my day.

YB: How did YB set you up for success and prepare you for life beyond YB? Mai: YB taught me how to survive in the real world. I also really enjoyed the community service events.

YB: How was it attending YouthBuild as its first fully-virtual class? Mai: It was challenging because my last school was completely virtual, so I was looking forward to being in person with Youthbuild. However, because of COVID, we were unable to be in person. It was weird because I didn’t get to meet most of my teachers in person until graduation but it was nothing but love when we finally met.

YB: How did you maintain your focus during a typical school day as a virtual student? Mai: I did pretty well. My teachers stayed on top of me and made sure I made it to class each day. Ms. Mallory and Mr. Thomas would call me back to back if they didn’t see me in class each morning.

YB: How did you feel walking across the stage on graduation day? Mai: It was one of the best days of my life! The rain tried to ruin our day but we didn’t let it. It felt really good walking across that stage. I did it for my grandmother who passed away, for my daughter, and myself. It was my goal to finally finish school and I did it!

YB: What are your goals moving forward? Mai: I’m currently working as a security guard at Allied Barton but would like to enroll into the Community College of Philadelphia to pursue my dream of becoming a social worker once I figure out my work schedule and childcare.
