Martin Health Systems in Tradition looking for the answers

TREASURE COAST — Sunday, July 10, was a sunny morning by the St. Lucie River. There were few boats on the water. There was a light breeze, however. When it shifted westward, everyone groaned. A small bay nearby was covered in a thick blanket of cyanobacteria, blue-green algae. When the sun hit it right, the algae bloom looked like a solid, beautiful alien landscape one could walk on. It glimmered in rich, surreal colors.

TRADITION — Martin Health System (MHS) continues to be at the forerunner in medical science, after 77 years of providing health care to the Treasure Coast. “We really try to make sure that we’re providing the kind of care

that you would find in a larger city,” says communication director Scott Samples. “This area has been growing for quite some time. We’ve tried to stay at the forefront of a lot of technology that is out there.” Since opening in 2013, the Tradition campus alone has seen such demand they’ve already initiated a second-phase expansion that will double the amount of hospital rooms to 180, add medical offices, and install new specialized facilities by 2018. One of these facilities will be a

new catheterization unit. In May, MHS introduced an innovative alternative to open-heart surgery: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR. This procedure is offered to patients with aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve) who because of age or certain comorbidities may be ineligible for surgery. The procedure installs a new valve with the use of a catheter inserted through a small incision in the groin and fluoroscopy,

Though a younger population is beginning to move to Port St. Lucie and non-age related ailments like diabetes are becoming more common at MHS, Samples says a large part of their demographic is still retirees. “Having a seasonal population and a high number of retirees, we see a lot of conditions related to aging. That can range from cancer to heart, orthopedics, and back and spine,” says Samples. St. Lucie and Martin counties have a higher lung cancer incidence rate than the state overall, according to a 2015 report put out by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Miami. For the last couple of years, MHS has been offering lung cancer screenings for patients over 55 years of age who meet certain criteria. Until very recently, other cancers were detectable early on, but lung cancer wasn’t. Lung cancer currently tops the national list of deadliest cancers. In June 2011, the National Lung Screening Trial, funded by the National Cancer Institute, published a report that concluded that the low-dose computer

Since June 2014, out of nearly 900 patients screened by MHS, 1.5 percent were found to have some form

of lung cancer and were treated. Once cancer is discovered, MHS’s well-oiled mechanism is put into play. The patient is paired with a lung navigator who helps them cope with their diagnosis and evaluate their options, and is able to consult with the system’s several affiliated oncologists to seek

treatment. When Dennis Tishko, a thoracic surgeon who did his residency at Harvard Medical School Deaconess, joined the MHS team, he brought with him a new technique for lung cancer removal

TRADITION — The Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home was a symbol of hope on Tradition Parkway. It’s become a symbol of state and federal government dysfunction. Representative Patrick Murphy recently got an encouraging words from the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA, that all the wrinkles will come out in the wash and the home — which will be partially funded by the federal and state governments — will get built. “It was welcome news to receive such an encouraging response from the VA regarding the state’s grant application for construction funding for the Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home to be built to Community Living Center standards,” Murphy said in an emailed response to questions. What the VA’s undersecretary of health, David Shulkin, wrote

File photo The Ardie R. Copas State Veteran Home is likely to be back on track being built after going through some red-tape obatacles with the Departtment of Veterans Affairs. Murphy is, “We believe this new application most likely will get funded due to Florida being a ‘great need for new beds’ State in the project ranking criteria for new State home applications.” These days, that’s about as much encouragement as Copas Home advocates get. The “new application” is a reference to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs upping its request in April for grant dollars to build the home. There’s a complicated history here. Tradition had become a place

of sour economic-development gambling starting with the crash of Digital Domain in 2012. The City of Port St. Lucie, which built Tradition Studios for Digital Domain, was on the hook for tens of millions that it never recovered by later selling the building to Christ Fellowship. The Vaccine & Gene Institute of Florida later followed Digital Domain into bankruptcy, which also cost the city tens of millions. The city also paid to construct VGTI’s local research facility. Last year

Linda Gausten - The Smart Choice Linda Gausten is a retired financial executive, municipal bond expert, and community organizer running for the Port St. Lucie City Council, District 2. This is her message to the voters of Port St. Lucie:

28326

Port St. Lucie is close to a billion dollars in debt. We currently spend approximately 40% of our budget just paying the interest on that debt. Municipal bonds have become the backbone of this city. If elected, I intend to use my expertise and experience in this area to try and restructure the City’s debt, much of which was issued when interest rates were higher. Let’s take advantage of the lower rates wherever we can. But, I’m more than just a numbers person. My community organizing experience involved several community entities, including forming 29 block associations and obtaining New York State grant

money for a project involving neighborhood safety. I have a strong environmental track record that includes organizing the very successful petition and a rally covered by three television networks and several newspapers to oppose Compost USA in St. Lucie county. This project would have had disastrous environmental consequences for the City of Port St. Lucie and our waterways. We have recently been hit with a huge property tax increase to pay for the council’s poor decisions. When I looked at the reasons why, I realized that most of the people who made the decisions which caused the city’s problems were just not qualified. Although these were well intentioned people, their experience did not give them the knowledge and judgment needed for the job. This election is a job interview. The voters need to elect someone

qualified to do the job. When I looked at my opponents in this race, I realized that I can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch the council continue to make disastrous decisions based on poor understanding of responsible fiscal judgment which can and will destroy the reasons we all live here. I propose volunteer citizens’ committees comprised of welleducated legal, financial, and civic minded individuals which can help advise the council before they make uninformed decisions. The city is growing quickly and we must formulate a solid fiscally sound plan for that growth before it spirals out of control. Everything in the city has a price tag. That includes all emergency services, the parks, the roads, the drinking water, the sewers, and on. Now, more than ever, the city needs my skills and experience to help heal the financial health of Port St. Lucie.

Paid for and approved by Linda Gausten.

Linda Gausten If elected, I will not take any other form of employment because this job requires full-time focus and commitment. I intend to devote one day a week just for walk-ins so that the residents of this city can come in and speak to a council member one on one. Let’s work together to solve our problems. For more information about Linda, visit her website http:// lindagausten.com or her Facebook page, “Elect Linda Gausten”.

Staff photo by Patrick McCallister Congressman Patrick Murphy collects bottles of water filled with blue-green algae. He plans on taking the contaminated water to other members of Congress. Murphy is pushing for House of Representatives leadership to schedule a vote on the Water Resources Act to speed the Central Everglades Planning Project, a series of projects to help restore the southern flow of water from Lake Okeechobee, which could help reduce discharges into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers.

But — “The smell speaks for itself,” Congressman Patrick Murphy said to about two dozen reporters and water activists gathered at Central Marine Stuart. Most wore painter masks. Those did little to hold back the stench. Murphy hosted the press conference after which he collected bottles of blue-green algae to take to Capitol Hill and the White House. Murphy recently sent a letter to Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House Majority Leader, urging a quick vote on the Water Resources Development Act. The bill includes Everglades restoration projects to help restore southern flows of water from Lake Okeechobee. Florida has dried Everglades land since the 1880s. Part of that process was building the Herbert Hoover Dike around much of Lake Okeechobee. The Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of the dike. It releases water into the St. Lucie Canal, C-44, which makes its way to the St. Lucie and Indian rivers, to prevent a catastrophic breech. In May the South Florida Water Management District spotted a large algae bloom on Lake Okeechobee. It migrated with those water releases into the St. Lucie Canal, then River. Then it made its way to the Indian River, and even onto Martin County beaches. Many along the area waterways are enduring the stench. It’s not the smell, but what’s in it that Martin County Commission Chairwoman Anne Scott spoke about at the press conference. The variety of cyanobacteria fouling waterways on the Treasure Coast produce microsystins, St. Lucie County Commission Chairman Kim Johnson helps Congressman Patrick Murphy collect bottles of water filled with blue-green algae. Johnson and several other St. Lucie and Martin County officials attended a press conference with Murphy on Sunday, July 10.

The microsystins are the bacteria’s defense against predation, according to Edie Widder, senior scientist and CEO at the Ocean Research & Conservation Association, Fort Pierce. While many are calling for the governor and president to tour the area, Scott urged otherwise to make a point. “Gov. (Rick) Scott,” the commissioner said. “President (Barack) Obama. Don’t come here. It’s way too dangerous.” The commissioner and governor are not related. Scott said she’d gotten her first heavy exposure to blue-green algae scent recently. “By the time I got home, I had a migraine headache and nausea,” she said. Widder said at the press conference that state funding for monitoring hazards in the Indian River Lagoon has been cut in recent years, hampering research into possible health consequences of the blue-green algae bloom. But, she offered a scientific guess. “I would say in this concentration it’s never safe,” Widder said. In an interview after the conference, Widder said there’s research into a neurotoxin cyanobacteria produce. She said it may mimic another molecule in the brain and exposure could result in increased risk of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, along with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called ALS. Widder said while much research is needed to be done to say for sure, there’s evidence that inhaling aerosolized microsystins from cyanobacteria blooms

ST. LUCIE WEST — Brian Grinonneau and Betsey Duggan live in PGA Village. They are partners in Whizfish, a mobile app development company and they recently launched the CityWatch™ Mobile App, a two-way communication app for iPhone and Android to enable law enforcement to work with citizens to reduce crime. Ironically, the Orlando shooter worked as a security guard at PGA and had recently changed the transponder on the gates of the community. The renewed focus on terrorism in the community prompted Whizfish to re-introduce the CityWatch™ app, which was rolled out in December. The app can be customized to allow law enforcement to send notifications to citizens, get the public involved and make it easier to interact with the police department and file and obtain reports. Citizens will be able to report incidents, receive alerts, use a See it? Snap it Photo Cam™, help identify sus-

pects and interact in other ways with local law enforcement. Grinonneau said that the app, which is only available to law enforcement, can be branded under the name of the law enforcement agencies or can use the name CityWatch™. Each agency can make their own reporting forms and systems available to citizens, who can then access the free app. “The police design the forms in the way they want the public to use them,” Grinonneau said. “Most police use social media or television to show a suspect, with the app, if there is a rash of robberies, they can push Notify and a link and a picture goes out.” The app costs law enforcement from $1000-$2000, depending on the features it has. “It costs about 1/3 the price of a website and does 10 times more,” Grinonneau said. “It can interact with people. You can get notifications like text messages, but they show up on the home screen and will remain in the message file within the app.” Other features of the app in-

TREASURE COAST — As bluegreen algae blooms in area waterways, the Indian River Lagoon Council’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Modeling Committee will have its first meeting on Tuesday, July 26. The committee will meet at 10 a.m. at Up The Creek Farms in Valkaria. That meeting will be open to the public. At its last regular meeting — Tuesday, July 5 — The St. Lucie County Commission heard from Duane De Freese, executive director of the council. He said the Citizens Advisory Committee, which is being formed at press time, will have its first meeting in August. “We are in a moment of history that is at once scary and excit-

ing.” De Freese said at the meeting. The council is a non-regulatory, non-taxing collaborative of four counties and 50 cities along the 156-mile Indian River Lagoon. Additionally, the St. Johns and South Florida Water Management districts are members. The counties, cities and districts pay to be in the council, which administers the federal National Estuary Program for the Indian River Lagoon. The St. Johns Water Management District used to. The idea behind the council is to improve results of local, state and federal water-project dollars by coordinating efforts, along with members applying peer pressure on each other to do things such as get homes off septic tanks and onto central sewer systems.

Understanding the St. Lucie County Fire District Assessment Referendum

Property Tax Revenues and Calls for Assistance

On August 30, 2016 all St. Lucie County registered voters will have the opportunity to vote on an annual assessment of up to $50 per residence and other modest fees for commercial property and vacant land. The assessment will fund the District’s fire protection services, equipment, facilities and programs.

Why is the Fire District seeking this assessment? Currently, the District’s fire rescue services are primarily paid for through an ad valorem property tax capped at 3 mils. This funding was adequate until additional Homestead Exemptions and the Great Recession combined to dramatically decrease taxable values. When values sharply decreased, so did the funds available to pay for services. Fire District revenues fell 36% -- but calls for assistance continued to rise by an average of 4.8% each year!

What does this mean to me? As of March 2014, the owners of 10,891 properties paid nothing for fire protection because their assessed home value was less than the value of their tax exemptions; 42% of all properties in the county contributed less than $75 for the Fire District’s services. If the referendum passes, starting next year all property owners (residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and vacant land) in St. Lucie County, including those in the cities, will pay an assessment for the Fire District when they pay their property tax bill. Those rates can be found on the District’s website. For the homeowner, the assessment for each residence will be no more than $50 – less than 14 cents a day. Because this fee is not linked to the value of a home, all homeowners will share fairly and equally in this assessment and the fire protection services it supports.

What will the money be used for?

FIRE VEHICLE NEEDS

By law, the funds may only be used for fire protection services, facilities/equipment and programs. In order to maintain high levels of service with reduced revenue during the economic downturn, one of the cost-saving measures the District took was to temporarily put off purchasing replacement vehicles or making necessary capital improvements to fire stations. Maintaining a reliable fleet of vehicles is essential to providing reliable fire protection services. Over the next four years, the District must replace 27 trucks that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Another 15 rescue trucks will also be needed, but these will be purchased using other funding sources.

What else has the District done to save money? Having a single Fire District that serves the entire county allows our District to operate at a lower cost than neighboring fire departments. For instance, last year the per-resident cost for fire rescue services was about 15% lower in St. Lucie County than in neighboring counties – and the St. Lucie County Fire District handled about 2,500 more calls than Martin and Indian River counties combined. The starting pay of our firefighters is $32,000 a year versus $43,118 in Martin and $39,838 in Indian River. Between 2009-2014, our employees agreed to first postpone and then cut in half scheduled pay and cost of living increases and agreed to increase their own contributions by 2% of base pay to the pension plan, reducing taxpayer costs. The District also reduced firefighter staffing from a high of 404 in 2008 to a low of 359 in 2014.

Ultimately, if funding for the Fire District fails to cover costs, the District would have no choice but to decrease its level of service to the county’s residents, through staffing cuts and continued deferral of critical equipment purchases. In addition to jeopardizing the safety of our residents, the lack of equipment and potentially longer response times will likely negatively impact our county’s insurance rating - which can lead to an increase in homeowner and commercial fire insurance premiums, or even result in the inability to obtain fire insurance on some properties.

the city council hiked property taxes to help pay off those bad gambles. But during some of Tradition’s darkest days of unfulfilled development, the state announced St. Lucie County was on the short list for possible sites to build the seventh veterans nursing home. Besides construction jobs for a couple years, the project promised about $7 million a year in wages, along with another $5 million in locally-purchased products and services. In 2014, a site selection committee toured the 28-acre site the Tradition Land Company donated to St. Lucie County to bolster its bid to get the next 120- to 128-resident home. By the end of the year the Florida Cabinet approved the committee’s recommendation to build the home in Tradition. Word was that construction could begin by fall of 2015. That ran into snags. And snags. By the early part of this year, the VA told the state that it was upgrading the design standards for the veterans home grant program to the Community Living Center model. All the work the state had put into designing the proposed Copas home — gone.

Those raised standards also upped the state’s share for constructing the home, something the Florida Legislature would have to approve during its 60day session in 2017. In April, the state veterans department bumped its grant request from $39 to $59 million seeing if the feds would throw in more than its usual 66-percent share for constructing the veteran nursing homes. The VA said no. Since then the proposed Copas Home has been a football in play at the 50-yard line. Steve Murray, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs was succinct about the state’s response to Shulkin’s letter to Murphy. “We are committed to building the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port St. Lucie,” he said in an email. Murphy seemed more optimistic. “This facility will be the first of its kind in Florida and fill an existing nursing home service gap in our state,” he said in his email. “I look forward to continuing my work with federal, state, and local officials in support of this facility in St. Lucie County to provide our veterans with the quality care they deserve after their service to our nation.”

ALGAE from page A10 Septic tanks leak nutrients and bacteria into waterways through storm water. Additionally, the council aims to increase political clout for getting federal dollars for projects by unifying counties and cities along the Indian River Lagoon. It formed last year. Martin County was the first to dive into the Indian River Lagoon Council. In January last year, the county commission unanimously voted to pay $50,000 a year to join. St. Lucie, Brevard and Volusia counties followed. Indian River County opted not to join. Along with the counties, 50 cities joined, as did the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the South Florida and St. Johns Water Management districts. In a telephone interview after the meeting, De Freese said the upstart council has big plans to build its projects priorities from the neighborhoods up. “The big driver for us over the next year will be to revise the Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan,” he said. De Freese added, “This is going to be our link to ecosystem restoration: people.” He said grand plans for restoring the 156-mile lagoon that stretches from Martin to Volusia

counties mean little if the people living, working and playing along it aren’t the biggest part in making them. De Freese hopes that the citizens committee will do two things — take information from communities to the council and visa-versa. Right now, folks living along the lagoon are just angry. There’s the blue-green algae, cyanobacteria, in the southern end of the lagoon certainly coming from Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie River. That blue-green algae did something highly unusual and unheard of among local water experts and advocates. The freshwater bacteria migrated into the ocean to wash up on beaches. The migration was apparently along freshwater streams pushed into the Atlantic by water volume driven by a heavy rain season in South Florida. Brevard County had a large fish die on the Banana River — which is part of the estuary — in March. The cause was another bacteria, aureoumbra lagunensis, commonly called brown tide. The brown tide was spotted in November, and started blooming in January. Some water experts are warning that conditions are ripe this summer for the blue-green algae to migrate to possibly Volusia to

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Treasure Coast Reuse Center is looking for a new home. The group collects and gives away items that would normally end up at the dump; but a five-year space donation is ending and it has to move. “If it’s dropped off at the Reuse Center, it goes out for free,” founder Nichole Rouse said. “The purpose of the Reuse Center is so these items do not go to the landfill. It’s about upcycling.” Reuse is an informal charitable group. Rouse said it’s never collected or requested money, either as donations or sale prices for items, so creating a not-for-profit seems unnecessary. The center is at Extra Space Storage on Northwest Business Center Drive, in St. Lucie West. In addition to storing items there, Reuse opens its 10-by-20 storage room to the public to look for items four days a week. Extra Space has given the Reuse Center three months of continued free rent to give it time to relocate, according to Jeff Norman, senior director of corporate communications. He said that Extra Space doesn’t own the location; it was recently hired as a management company to run the facility. Norman said Extra Space sometimes includes signs and branding in management agreements similarly to Marriott Hotels, which is the case in St.

Lucie West. “It’s not our space to give and the way it’s being used, it sounds like, is not allowed in the lease agreement,” Norman said. Norman said the company is a real estate investment trust. It owns some storage facilities, and does donate space to charities at those. “Most of our charitable work is done through donating space,” he said. However, he said those donations of storage space don’t include something Reuse Center does — allow the public to visit. He said there are insurance issues that prohibit that practice. Likewise, he said Extra Space doesn’t allow businesses to open to customers at their facilities. Rouse started the Reuse Center around 2010. At the time she was on the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Committee. Her husband brought home usable items people were discarding. The pair started a sort of weekly rubbish roving — looking for discarded items on roadsides that seemed salvageable. Then she decided to make a big point about reducing landfill waste by encouraging folks to pass unwanted items to others who’d use them. “I found a beautiful gown in the trash that I wore to a city event,” Rouse said. After getting her share of compliments on the gown that evening, Rouse announced that she’d recovered it from someone’s trash. She said others started joining

TRADITION — Not all things that sparkle shine, unless, of course, you’re a couple from Miami with not one, but two unique businesses; and, a single-family home in Tradition. When asked how a graduate with a degree in interior design and architecture from Florida State University becomes a frozen food vendor, Gary Brinker, 48, an offshore custom race boat builder for more than 20 years, and originally from Romeo, Michigan replies, “It was Leasa’s idea.” After seven years accompanying Leasa to display and sell her products, Gary launched Frozen Fruit Frenzy; a frozen banana and flavored-water company at the suggestion of his wife. Leasa Brown-Brinker, 55, owner of Get Stoned, a company that started off as a hobby in updating old clothing for friends, and later developed into something more after a professional football player suggested adding hats to her craft. Leasa, originally from Philadelphia, creates handcrafted Swarovski crystal designed hats and sunglasses, a hobby that allowed her to leave her full time job when business grew and she could no longer do the work parttime, launching her own busi-

ness. Leasa, saw an opportunity, and asked him, “Why don’t you do your own thing and make some money?” So, that is exactly what he did. Gary’s new business venture was to take a turn into health conscious food. The concept was derived by their own healthy eating habits. The Brinker’s have always packed meals from home and ate freshly prepared foods while traveling. “We would eat fresh all week, only to have to start over again after a weekend feeling sick,” Leasa said. They decided to develop a gluten-free, dairy-free, sodium-free, zero trans-fat, fresher option to fried foods normally sold at events. They chose frozen chocolate-covered bananas and flavored waters in grape, raspberry, lemon, and strawberry provide as a nutritious alternative suitable for parents, children, and elderly. The Brinker’s tested the frozen food market in 42 degree weather at Gary’s first vending event. “People were shivering, but they were buying,” he said. The couple has traveled the state to events and parties observing trends and business opportunities which is how they discovered their house in Tradition. At one specific event when they

In January, MHS also began pioneering a new technology for breast cancer radiation. Intraoperative Radiation Treatment, overseen by Dr. Craig Wengler who researched the technique at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, delivers a high-intensity, highly targeted dose of radiation to the tumor site during lumpectomy. The procedure is still relatively new but gaining popularity, says Samples. “We wanted to make this piece of technology available, because we knew it would have a pretty significant benefit to breast cancer patients on the Treasure Coast. We’re always looking for ways to provide the best, most efficient care, and this was a natural opportunity for us.” The procedure can save the patient up to seven weeks of whole-breast radiation treatment or drastically reduce their treatment. A lot of the expansion in the

In 2009, MHS opened a free-standing emergency department with 13 beds, and well on their way toward maximizing their potential in Tradition — the 180 beds they’ve set as their 2018 goal is only half of their buildout capacity. “As the hospital grows, and the needs grow, and physicians continue to come into the area,

we hope to see additional services grow out there as the years go on,” says Samples. MHS, founded in 1939 at the site where currently their medical school resides, has since expanded to 13 locations from St. Lucie West to Hobe Sound, including a sleep clinic in Palm City and diagnostic imaging centers and outpatient rehabilitation clinics across the two counties.

Gary Ferguson | Hobe Sound Prostate Cancer Patient

With access to life-saving care. When Gary Ferguson attended a free cancer screening at Martin Health System in February 2015, it turned out to be a potentially life-saving decision. The 59-year-old was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer, even though there had been no signs or symptoms of the disease. Fortunately for Gary, he heard through his church about the annual free screening offered at the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center.

REUSE from page A19 shows around town, around the community.” However, Rouse said she has hard-and-fast rules against using items donated by others to Reuse for her business. Reuse also collects plastics and other items for TerraCycle. That company doesn’t pay for the collected items, rather it offers points for products it offers. “Like park benches, garbage cans, backpacks,” Rouse said. She said Reuse gets items with those points — and gives them away.

BRINKERS from page A20 were preparing for a craft show in Stuart at a local Dunkin Donuts. They came across the Sunday paper, as they viewed the real estate section Leasa noticed how the housing market in the Treasure Coast area, specifically St. Lucie County, contrasted to the real estate sales in Dade County. There was a single-family home listed for around $215,000. Leasa asked Gary, “Am I reading this right?” Just for fun, they decided to contact the real estate agent and investigate the property and see the house. When they met with the real estate agent, still surprised at the property value when compared to prices, Leasa asked the Realtor to continue to send her properties as they listed. Compared to Miami, a condominium can list and sell for up to three times the price of a single-family home in St. Lucie County. With Port St. Lucie being the fourth fastest growing city in the state of Florida, beating Fort Lauderdale, like many other Florida residents the possibility of a bigger home for less is appealing. Less than a month later, the real

Rouse said she’s not interested in keeping the Reuse Center at Extra Space. “I don’t want to salvage the location,” she said. “I love where I am. I wish I could (stay). I don’t feel good in my heart about it being there.” In addition to the 10-by-20 space, Waste Pro of Florida pays for a larger unit for Reuse at Extra Space. Reuse hopes to find another storage business willing to donate space to help the community. estate agent sent a picture for a house in Tradition. “I said to Gary, we are moving,” Leasa said. But, for Leasa, what really sealed her decision was the day a Miami neighbor brought an article to a local paper stating that Miami-Dade County was expecting to grow in North Miami Beach by more than 44,000 residents over the next 2 years. “You can buy me a brand-new Rolls Royce, so if I have to sit in traffic for 8 hours to go to Publix, I’m going to be very comfortable,” Leasa told her husband, “or you’re moving with me to St. Lucie.” So, in 2015, after visiting Tradition, the decision was an easy one for both to make. “From the minute I opened the front door, I couldn’t believe the value,” said Gary. From price to location, the decision has been good all around. What they love most about Tradition, are the people. Comparing Tradition to Disney, the couple feels it’s the perfect place to be. “People are so friendly. You can’t walk by someone without being greeted,” Leasa said. Gary added, “It’s such a happy place. It’s beautiful, clean, but it’s more than that. It’s the people.”

She said there’s little people can do to prevent that exposure, besides leaving the area or investing in and wearing gas masks. “Those painter masks might help with gag reflex, but they do nothing to reduce exposure to microsystins,” she said. fill the entire lagoon. The council’s job isn’t to tackle today’s blue-green algae and brown tide. They’re battles, yes, but the council is in for the war. Frank Sakuma, chief operating officer, said more catastrophic events will come. It’s a matter of time. “This isn’t going to be the last (large algae bloom),” he said. “You can’t do so much (damage) to a system and expect it to bounce back immediately.”

locations, including Sandsprit Park. The audience gathered at the press conference took no reassurance from the state’s environmental department’s reporting. St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said others aren’t buying it either. “Our tourism revenue is off significantly,” he said at the press conference. Dzadovsky chairs St. Lucie’s Tourist Development Council. He echoed a common refrain on the Treasure Coast: until water in Lake Okeechobee stops coming to the Indian River Lagoon, there are going to be widespread ecological crises, such as blue-green

algae blooms. “We know that attending to a severed artery is what comes first when the body is under distress,” he said. “That’s Lake Okeechobee.” After the press conference St. Lucie County Commission Chairman Kim Johnson and Dzadovsky helped Murphy collect bottles of blue-green algae water. Murphy is taking them to Capitol Hill and the White House to give other lawmakers and the president a stronger sense of what’s on the Treasure Coast.

De Feese worked with Gov. Bob Martinez to introduce the National Estuary Program into Florida. He said attitudes have changed dramatically over the years, especially since 2013, and residents are increasingly driving the state and federal decisions. That year hastily-arranged protests against continued pollution of the St. Lucie from Lake Okeechobee discharges drew thousands and hit a pitch that resonated to Tallahassee and Washington D.C. That led to the creation of the Florida Senate Se-

lect Committee on the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee, headed up by Sen. Joe Negron. Due to the committee’s recommendations, during the 2014 session, the Florida Legislature appropriated $232 million to help with Everglades and Indian River Lagoon restoration. “For the first time, I see that mobilization where we’re looking beyond this (catastrophic) event and saying ‘Let’s fix this problem,’” he said. “It’s a transformation where we are looking at local-level leadership.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Once upon a time, there was a lonely Frog. He retrieves a golden ball for Princess Prim in exchange for her friendship, but the spoiled princess doesn’t live up to her part of the bargain and puts her Royal Knights on alert. This is the beginning of “The Frog Prince,” the final workshop in Missoula Children’s Theatre’s summer camps for youngsters 6-18 at the Sunrise Theatre. This workshop runs from July 25-29, with a performance July 29. As is the case with all MCT productions, this is an original musical, with music and lyrics by Michael McGill and additional material by Rebecca McGill. There is an exciting cast of characters including Ollie, the wise old Aspen tree, a well-read Alligator, kindly Swamp Things, various princesses, nasty Venus Fly Traps and dancing Flamingos. Of course, all ends happily. The hero becomes a Prince (formerly known as Frog,) and everyone learns a lesson about friendship and self-worth. Madeline Chitty and Emily Durchholz are the acting/directing team for the production. Chitty, a graduate of Ohio Northern University, and Durchholz, an alumna of the University of Southern Indiana, went to regional auditions and were offered contracts by MCT through next May. Chitty said that the offer checked off several boxes. “We both really love children and acting,” she

said. “It’s a great opportunity to travel and see other places.” In Fort Pierce, Chitty will be directing and Emily will play Joan the Queen and Maria von Flytrap. In the few weeks they have been leading workshops, things have gone well. “It usually runs really smoothly,” Chitty said. “The kids bring something new each week, so it’s refreshing and exciting. We’ve never had a cast that was not able to do what we asked them to do. It’s so much fun and they’re so excited to learn, too,” Chitty said that the show has some underlying messages. “The Frog realizes that who he is is more important than what he is,” she said. “It’s also about not breaking promises. This is a good message about being true to yourself and true to your word.” All MCT workshops allow older youngsters to act as assistant directors. “They’re always so helpful,” Chitty said. “It teaches important life skills and gives a leadership position. It gives kids a chance at something new.” Chitty said that both she and Durchholz are having a wonderful time and know that Missoula Children’s Theatre is a wonderful credit on a resume. They have T-shirts from other years.” Chitty said that the introduction to the arts at an early age was invaluable. “It’s so important,” she said. “I decided this is what I wanted to do when I was 11. It also teaches life skills like focus, teamwork, public speaking and respect for others.” Missoula Children’s Theatre and local youngsters present “The Frog Prince” at the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. TREASURE COAST!

Investing in art and chimps FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Save the Chimps, the world’s largest sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees is hosting its “All Things Chimp” online auction, which runs from now through July 22 on savethechimps.afrogs.org. The auction will feature over 90 unique items ranging from oneof- a-kind pieces of chimp art, collaborative primate art created by human and chimpanzee artists, gift baskets filled with t-shirts and other promotional items, and unique behind-thescenes experiences at the Save the Chimps Sanctuary. One of the most prized winnings is an original signed painting of one of Save the Chimps’ residents created by Academy Award-winning actor and Save the Chimps supporter Gene Hackman. Chimpanzees are intelligent be-

ings with a complex social structure and the need to be mentally stimulated. Save the Chimps provides variety in the chimps’ lives by offering them many forms of enrichment, including painting. The auction first began in 2014 and has evolved into one of the Sanctuary’s primary online fundraisers. Individuals from around the world have an opportunity to bid and help support the chimps. All proceeds directly benefit more than 250 rescued chimpanzees living in permanent sanctuary at Save the Chimps. This year’s fundraising goal for the online auction is $30,000. Check out our Facebook page for video or the chimps creating their works of art www.facebook/YourVoiceWeekly. Here is the simple Kure for the shank. Strike 20 to 30 balls with an object such as a rake or another club shaft (we use a two-by-four board at our Kevin Perkins Academy), just outside the ball, parallel to your target line. This will force you to swing down from inside the target line, to back down the line, insuring clubface contact, not hosel contact. Kevin Perkins is a PGA Master Professional and operates his Golf Academy at The Evergreen Club in Palm City. Kevin has hosted and produced his own Television and Radio golf shows and co-authored the instructional Book “Golf Everyone,” published by Hunter Textbooks. He may be reached at (561) 301-3783 or e-mail: dkperkins4@cs.com.Website: www. kevinperkinsgolfacademy.com

28316

T

he most frustrating and paralyzing shot in golf is the all-too-familiar “shank.” Armed with the proper knowledge, the player will have no problem correcting this shot pattern, Let’s first identify the cause, and then this will lead to a better and quicker understanding when we later address the Kure. A shank is simply caused by the club returning to the ball on an outside swing path, 90 percent of the time from on outside to inside, causing the “sweet spot” to return approximately 1 1/2 inches outside the ball so the hosel strikes the ball instead of the clubface. Now, here is where many people are misled. Because the ball goes severely to the right, they assume that they left the face open or led with the hosel to make it go right. Not true. The ball went right because you simply hit the ball with the hosel, a.k.a. the shaft, and because of the shape of the rounded hosel, the ball goes violently to the right.

There is No Need to Fear Losing Your Independence… A Walk-In Tub May Be the Key to Your Freedom

What Do Seniors Fear the Most?

When the EAR Foundation and Clarity released their study called “Aging in Place in America”, the findings were quite striking. The study was aimed at examining the attitudes and anxieties of the nation’s elderly population. What the study came to find was that seniors are fearful of having to leave their homes. In fact, losing their independence is a larger fear than dying. This fear stems from a loss of connection to the home and environment that they have built over their life. It is clear that moving into a nursing home could have the detrimental effect of creating a greater distance between them and their loved ones, including children, other family, and friends. The study found that 89% of seniors want to age in place, or grow older without having to move from their homes, and more than half are scared with their ability to take care of themselves at home.

Baby Boomers Are Worried for Their Parents!

The study also found that Baby Boomer children of elders could end up feeling helpless when faced with the choice of moving their parents out of home. The study found that 82% of the children fear their parents will be mistreated in a nursing home and 89% fear their parents will end up becoming depressed. It is obvious that seniors and their families are determined to have them remaining to live at home. So what is standing in the way?

Falling Is a Huge Fear for Aging Seniors…

There is one place in the house that tends to be the most dangerous to fall prone seniors, the bathroom. Modern bathrooms, with high toilets and bathtub walls can pose a significant issue to seniors with mobility issues. Luckily there are options to help prevent these serious issues, and therefore prevent the falls that eventually lead seniors to have to leave their house. A walk-in bathtub is that solution.

There Is An Easier Way

Walk-In tubs are one of the safest solutions to the issue of having to climb into and sit down in a normal “floor-height” tub. The convenience is un precedented. There are many types of walkin bathtubs on the market right now and it is very important that you pick one to suit all of your needs. The last thing you want to do is pay a contractor to come to your house and see your bathroom, just to tell you that your new tub won’t fit!

The fear of falling can be an all-too-real reality for some seniors. And once you’ve fallen once, your chances of it happening again greatly increases. The causes of senior falls and the injuries that happen from them can range from health problems to environmental factors. *http://www.marketingcharts.com/demographics-and-audiences/boomers-and-older/ seniors-fear-loss-of-independence-nursing-homes-more-than-death-2343/
