Community responds to Orlando tragedy

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — On Sunday, June 12, Port St. Lucie and the world woke to news of a shooting at an Orlando nightclub. As the information swirl became more congruent, three things emerged. It was the worst mass shooting in American history. The shooter lived and worked in St. Lucie County. The shooter seemed to be targeting gays. “I awoke to my mom calling me at 8 (a.m.) telling me to turn on the television,” Cory Pfister, treasurer and secretary of Port St. Lucie’s Pride of the Treasure Coast, said. “The last time she

did that was (during the Sept. 11 attacks) when I was in college.” The Orlando Police Department ended Omar Mateen’s shooting rampage at about 5 a.m., nearly three hours into the deadliest attack on American soil since 2001. By that time, he’d killed 49 and injured 53. Those numbers are subject to change by publication. Mateen was the 50th death in the attack. As an investigation into Mateen and search for any possible additional terrorists reached into Port St. Lucie on Sunday, Mayor Greg Oravec and Police Chief John Bolduc had a press conference. Oravec said the city had to turn to “continuing what makes our country great and bringing

all people together and practicing love.” “If the roots of the shooter’s hate extend into our community, we will not rest until they are ripped out,” Oravec said at the press conference. Pfister said the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT, community generally feels safe and welcomed in Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County and the Treasure Coast. “Yesterday morning the (St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office) contacted Tattle Tales (Nightclub), our one and only LGBT establishment, and told them, ‘We have your back,’” Pfister said. Tattle Tales, 8283 S. U.S. Highway 1, Port St. Lucie, will host a

benefit for victims of the Orlando shooting on Saturday, June 18, at 10 p.m. — Out LOUD for Orlando. The nightclub hosted an impromptu vigil on Sunday, June 12. Pride of the Treasure Coast is transitioning to ONE Treasure Coast. Among its aims is creating a community center in Port St. Lucie to provide education, support groups and other helps to members of the LGBT community. “As far as ONE Treasure Coast goes, we don’t want to take this tragedy and twist it in our favor, to our benefit, but this is exactly why we need a center, a center to

ST. LUCIE WEST — There is no shortage of tests a Florida third-grader has to take, but failing one in particular can hold them back a year, even with high marks on their report card and passing scores on all the others. This is the Florida Standards English Language Arts (FSELA) assessment all third graders in the state must take every spring. The test places undue stress on the students, says a group of St. Lucie parents who have joined a state-wide boycott called Florida Opt Out. Currently the St. Lucie chapter has more than 250 members, and there are about 35 chapters across the state. “It’s not that we’re against standardized tests,” says St. Lucie Opt Out administrator Sandy Langel. “We’re against highstakes testing that could prevent a student from progressing a grade.” Michelle Reardon, a St. Lucie West mother and member of the group, whose third-grade son Robert was recently diagnosed with high-functioning autism said, “To have him sit in a room

for 80 minutes or more with a huge test, knowing if he doesn’t do well, he doesn’t get to go on with his friends — that’s too much to put on a 9-year old. So my husband and I decided to write a letter and start the optout process.” Reardon said that while her son and his classmates at St. Lucie West K-8 were preparing for the test, he was suffering from a great amount of anxiety and insomnia. He doesn’t cope well with stressful situations, says Reardon, and she knew he would probably start filling in random bubbles just to get the test over with, because it upset him so much. “I decided to completely remove him from the situation altogether, because I can’t in good conscience do this to my child,” she said. When Reardon explained the situation to the principal of St. Lucie West K-8, she was told that Robert would have to answer at least a handful of questions. He didn’t, and when his report card came at the end of the year, it read “retention.” St. Lucie West K-8 could not be reached for comment. While it has been a struggle for Robert to receive the specialized education he needs at school —

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — School Board member Carol A. Hilson is making her fifth run to hold the District 2 seat from challenger Kacey Cooper-Armstrong. “It’s my passion,” Hilson said. “I am such a Pollyanna, I believe, I really do believe that the challenges are there to overcome. I do believe I can be part of the team to do that.” Hilson got into politics when she found herself an accidental leader in opposition to a proposed sex business in Port St. Lucie. Hilson said she strongly disliked, but wasn’t opposed to the existence of the type of business. Her objection was about where it was going to go — near families. The community successfully opposed the business; the company withdrew from the proposal. The event showed Hilson that people can make a difference when elected officials listen. “When you run for office, you really are an advocate for your community,” Hilson said. Before then, her church, Community United Methodist, tapped Hilson to run a proposed early childhood learning center. “I actually created it,” Hilson said. “The minister at the time said he had a vision, they were going to open it, and I was going to be the director.” Hilson is still the school administrator at Community United Methodist. She said that experience helps her understand early childhood education creates one of the most important benchmarks for any school district: graduation rates. “Why do we keep concentrating on graduation rates?,” she said. “It’s the early intervention.” Hilson was first elected in 2000. She’s ran twice unopposed and twice with challengers. District 2 includes the area south and east of Port St. Lucie Boulevard and Walton Road. While School Board members must live in their districts, the elections are countywide. Voters in St. Lucie West and Tradition — which are in districts 1 and 3 — help decide all School Board races. This year there are two seats up: District 4 along with 2.

Carol Hilson District 4 is nestled north of Port St. Lucie Boulevard east of the Ronald Reagan Turnpike, with a small portion just south of St. Lucie West. Hilson said she approaches the School Board with more than numbers in mind. “I think as a mom first, and then as a board member,” she said. “I have to think as a mother — what do I want for my child?” Hilson said while the district should give every student the chance to go to higher education, it must keep something in mind. Skilled workers are needed, too. “Too many kids go to college who don’t want to go to college and waste their parent’s money,” Hilson said. She said putting resources in teaching students trades is important. “Nowadays if you’re in a trade and have a certification, you can open your own business,” Hilson said. She said the largest challenge facing the School Board for the next four years will be managing the budget as funding slowing returns from pre-recession highs. At press time Hilson doesn’t have a campaign web site, or Facebook page. School Board races are non-partisan.

Mayor responds to Orlando massacre Last Sunday, we awoke to the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. History, perpetrated just 90 minutes away in Orlando, by someone who lived in our community. As we process and respond to this great tragedy, I would ask that we send our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the families whose lives have been forever changed by an act of great hate and violence. We join them in mourning their lost loved ones and sending wishes for a speedy recovery to the survivors. To the City of Orlando and Orange County, we stand with you in solidarity and are here as your brothers and sisters to respond to this emergency, to help you pick up what pieces we can, to take the actions we should, and to grieve what we must. To our community, many have expressed great concern over

whether the shooter resides in Fort Pierce or Port St. Lucie, and I say that it doesn’t matter because this terrible act could have happened and been hatched anywhere in our nation. It is not an Orlando, Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, or Florida event. As a nation, we must be ever vigilant and know that this type of heinous act, whether it be driven by hate of those different in religion or orientation, can happen anywhere. At the same time, we cannot allow our vigilance and willingness to act on reasonable suspicion to ever cross the line into the terri-

tory of blind fear and discrimination. For those with hate in their hearts, such a turn would be an even greater win than pulling the trigger on innocents. We face a moment which requires our careful thought, consideration, and action. As we have throughout our nation’s history, when times are at their worst, we must be at our best. Port St. Lucie is the safest large city in Florida and our dedicated police officers are assisting the FBI in its investigation of the shooter. If the roots of the shooter’s hate extend into our commu-

nity, we will not rest until they are completely ripped out and justice is served on behalf of the lost, the survivors, their families, our community and our way of life. Official updates on the investigation will be provided by the FBI. The City will provide statements as warranted. Remembering tragedy 60 years later

couple days before the mass shooting in Orlando, I talked to a man who survived the famous S.S. Andrea Doria sinking — St. Lucie County’s Frank Russo. “It’s something you never forget,” Russo said to me. Some in St. Lucie West and Tradition remember the now 76-year-old. He owned Family Pools. Now his son, Frank Russo Jr. does. Russo was 16 when the Andrea

Doria — an Italian cruise ship — sank off the coast of Massachusetts as it sailed for New York City from Italy. It was one of the worst maritime disasters in U.S. waters. That was on July 25, 1956. Sixty years ago. Russo was immigrating to the United States. A sponsoring couple was with him. As Russo looked forward to a life in the United States, the M.S. Russo, like other passengers, helped the crew evacuate others before departing the ship. “I helped a lot of people who had kids, older people, off the ship,” he said. In the next few days and weeks, stories will emerge in the media about courage at Pulse nightclub in Orlando while a Port St. Lucie man, Omar Mateen, rampaged. We’ll learn about people who shielded others best they could while a gunman callously killed. We’ll learn about people who distracted the gunman from others, so they could escape. We’ll learn about people who found exits and instead of leaving helped others find them, much like Russo helped others escape a listing, sinking ship. Tragedy is tragedy. When crisis is present, it matters not whether it’s natural or manmade, be it ac-

OUR VIEW cidental or terrorism. At the time, people want two things — to live and to save others. Sometimes the heroes live. Sometimes they die. Russo, as we always hope, was a hero who survived. He survived to an uncertain future — his connection to the United States was lost as the ship sank. “From there, they took me to New York and I didn’t even have a shirt,” he said. Exposed and traumatized, Russo had to deliver the most painful news to another anyone can. Back in 1956, there wasn’t an Internet for people to get news quickly. News moved at a much slower pace. News often came by word of mouth. “One of the (couple’s) sons came over and said, ‘Where’s my mom and dad?,’” Russo told me. The 16-year-old would have to tell the fella that his mother and father died while helping him immigrate to the United States. Russo was scared and scarred. He still is. His son told me that Russo won’t fly, won’t get on a ship, and won’t swim. Yeah. The guy that owned a pool company won’t swim. Russo dwells on what he has — life.

Maddie’s Fight against cancer at Bottle Shock wine tasting event

ST. LUCIE WEST — On June 24 Bottle Shock is hosting a wine and cheese tasting and event at 6 p.m. to raise money for Maddie Lane. Maddie is a 9-year-old girl who was diagnosed with multi-centric osteogenic sarcoma, a rare cancer that strikes the growth plates in younger children. The hospital’s doctors had only seen one case in more than 30 years. “It was in every bone in her body, except her skull, even in her lungs,” says Maddie’s mom Barbie. Maddie has begun aggressive chemotherapy, which is used for more common forms of bone cancer, until the family can find new therapies. In the meantime Maddie’s family and doctors call the chemo, “Spider Juice,” after her favorite super-hero Spiderman and because Maddie doesn’t like the word chemo. GG Sweet Treats in St. Lucie West will also be sweetening the event by handing out treats. “We have our own chocolate company and we usually do every one of Michael’s wine tastings, which are usually all for charity,” said Joan Gangemi, co-owner of GG Sweet Treats. “We will be pairing the wines with our chocolates and giving them out all night.” Team Maddie started when friends and family started reaching out to the community. TESTING from page 3 confines of the law,” says Dr. Helen Wild, Chief Academic Officer for St. Lucie Schools. “We have to follow procedures and state board rules, and we need to make sure the students have mastered the third grade standards.” There seems to be a language barrier, however, between state statutes, St. Lucie school district and schools, and protesting parents. Participation in the FSA third grade reading evaluation is mandated by statute; that much is clear. According to the Florida Department of Education, promotion to fourth grade is only recommended by the state if a student scores an achievement level 2 or higher. Many of the students opting out are instructed by parents to break the seal of the test and write their name, but leave all questions unanswered. This “minimal testing” is currently scored by the district as a Level 1, a failing grade. Opt Out parents believe their children’s tests should be registered as NR2 (non-recorded score, class 2: Did Not Meet Attemptedness Criteria). If this were to happen, it could possibly allow districts to look at other rubrics for third-grade promotion. A favored assessment by the Opt Out Community is what they

call “180 Days of Schoolwork,” a student-based record that would show proficiency of certain reading standards without needing to subject the children to highstakes testing. Already, students who receive a Level 1 on the test can seek redress by a few different methods, called good cause exemptions. First of all, they can take any one of two alternative tests, the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT10) and the Iowa Standardized Test (ITBS), but St. Lucie District director of Assessments and Accountability says in order to qualify for these tests a student must undergo additional reading instruction after failing the FSA exam, such as attending summer school. The district could be looking at changing this in the near future. Another alternative would be to have the student’s teacher compile a portfolio assessment. This measure has very specific and stringent guidelines, allowing scores to include chapter and unit tests, but requiring that for each standard assessed by the ELA exam, a student portfolio has to show three examples of its mastery (70 percent and higher), and the overall portfolio also has to have a certain literary / com-

LUCIE COUNTY — The June Dyer Difference Award was recently presented to the Treasure Coast Lionfish Safari, which hosted its fourth annual event to help rid our waterways of the lionfish — a non-native species of fish with no predator. And while the lionfish may be lovely to look at, because they have no predator other than man in the water, the invasive species is quite literally taking over the area’s reefs at an alarming rate, causing damage and danger to our way of life and the delicate ecosystem which supports it. The Fourth Annual Treasure Coast Lionfish Safari was recently held to help eliminate some of the problem in a delicious activity that was fun, educational, and wildly creative. While dive teams from around the region participated in the spearfishing safari to collect as many lionfish as possible, back on land the group featured some of the area’s best chefs in a culinary challenge to create the tastiest lionfish recipes around. The days’ activities also featured a children’s art competition, an art auction

prehension make-up. “We are currently allowing students without a score, for any reason whether new to our district or out sick, to take advantage of the alternatives, which would be the SAT-10, or any of the good cause exemptions they may qualify for,” says Wild. She says they are doing everything in their power to treat each case individually and offer as many exemptions as possible to promote third graders. These alternative assessments certainly don’t make it easy on Opt Outers, however, whose main concern is too much testing. What’s more: these good cause exemptions are really meant to assist those with reading deficiency who wouldn’t otherwise be eligible for promotion, whereas many of the students opting out of the FSA test have already shown reading proficiency by other means. St. Lucie Opt Out is still fledgling, founded by Langel only a couple of years ago, about the time the state was migrating from the FCAT to the FSA. They have helped provide parents with information and resources regarding the FSA and alternative assessments. As they’ve grown, other related issues have fallen under their radar. The results are in, and according to the Florida DOE metrics, 28 percent of St. Lucie third graders failed the FSELA; the state average is 22 percent. Many schools like St. Lucie West K-8 (with a 16-percent failure rate) have brighter statistics, several schools in the county are well over a 40 percent failure rate, and many in Fort Pierce above 50 percent. 65 percent of Chester A. Moore Elementary third graders failed the test. Unfortunately, because funding for schools is linked to FSA scores, the schools with less resources are doomed to repetitive failure. Because school assignment in St. Lucie is not strictly regional — another issue St. Lucie Opt Out is aiming to rectify — this hamster-wheel of failure affects everyone with children in the area. If all else fails, 10-year-old Robert will begin meeting with Nicholas Zrallack, a former Exceptional Student Education director, currently Director of Curriculum with the District. Zrallack will be administering a make-up test to Robert over the summer, in a casual specially designed setting, with shorter installments over a longer period of time. The idea is to create an environment where Robert’s testing anxieties can be laid to rest, and he can truly exhibit his proficiencies. Michelle Reardon says that however it transpires with her son, she plans to continue to fight for educational reform, so that she can help affect changes for future students.

All Florida residents and visitors are asked to “Drain and Cover” to help keep our families and neighbors safe; it only takes a bottle cap of water for some mosquitoes to breed and multiply. “We must all do our part to act quickly to eliminate new sources of standing water brought on by Tropical Storm Colin, which can rapidly become mosquito breeding sites,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. Celeste Philip. “While we have not experienced local transmission of Zika in Florida, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to protect ourselves from mosquito bites in and around our homes.” To protect against mosquitoes, the department urges the public to “Drain and Cover”:

TREASURE COAST — More than 100 were in attendance at A Wonderland Tea Party at the Pelican Yacht Club on May 14 for tea and a whimsical time. The event rose more than $4,000 in support of Treasure Coast Hospice’s Little Treasures Pediatric Care Program. Guests were treated to tea and refreshments with wonderland-themed cupcakes from The Cake Lady and enjoyed a spring fashion show presented by Sea Salt Boutique. Participants joined a fanciful hat contest where the audience chose their favorite dress hats worn by attendees. Alice in Wonderland characters from the St. Lucie Ballet also joined in the fun, taking photos with guests before the afternoon ended with exciting raffle drawings. “We are very grateful to everyone who supported our Little Treasures Pediatric Care Program through A Wonderland Tea Party,” said Wendy Mahood, Volunteer Manager at Treasure Coast Hospice. “Families

throughout our community are benefiting from the compassionate care of our Little Treasures Team.” The Little Treasures Pediatric Care Program offers care to families with children suffering from serious illness. This pediatric team surrounds the family with support through intensive pain and symptom management guidance and advocacy. They also provide music therapy from a music therapist and child-specific counseling and support from the team’s child life specialist. The event was, in part, to help raise funds for the proposed community center. “Our vision for the community center would be a centrally-located, physical brick-and-mortar storefront to be a meeting space to facility support groups,” Pfister said. “As well as a place for resources.” He added, “The center, in our mind, is going to be a home base to carry out a lot of our planned programs that range from support to education and social events. A place to perhaps have a movie night for youth. And, of course, an office.” Pride, Pfister said, has about 5 to 10 percent of the financial resources needed to open a cen-

ter. He said later this month the organization will start solidifying plans for opening a center. “Really getting our feet into the water and making headway to bringing the community center to the Treasure Coast, he said. Pfister said broader community support for Pride always increases after PrideFest. He said that’ll likely be even more so after the Orlando shooting. He said Pride will tap that support to raise funds for Equality Florida’s efforts to help victims of the shooting. He said the organization will host fundraisers. At press time, none are scheduled. I could have been dead like so many others.” Russo doesn’t expect much else from God, or anyone else for that matter. “Don’t wait for someone to give it to you,” he said. “Hustle,” he said several times. Work hard. But, Russo said he’s tempered hustling to care for himself and others with taking time to enjoy life. “I’m not greedy,” he said. “I never chose to be rich. I’m comfortable. I’m very generous, and I worked hard to be where I am.” Russo Jr. concurred with all of

his father’s self-evaluation. In the coming months and years people who survived what President Barack Obama described as the worst mass shooting in American history will have to find their ways, much like a 16-year-old Italian boy standing shirtless and alone in 1956 New York did. I’d asked Russo for the life lesson from his experience to pass to others. I didn’t know at the time dozens of Floridians would lie dead from a local, home-grown terrorist’s rampage not 48 hours later. “I’m not a preacher, but I have given people — especially ones in trouble — this advice: Don’t wait for someone to give it to you,” Russo said. Port St. Lucie City manager announces departure Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — City manager Jeff Bremer announced his planned departure at the end of this year. “The manager handed me a surprise today, so now we have to shift gears to finding a replacement,” Mayor Greg Oravec said at the last regular meeting of the Port St. Lucie City Council. That was Monday, June 13. In a memo circulated earlier in the day to council members, Bremer said he would depart from the city on Dec. 31. “I decided there’s a point in time when it becomes an opportunity to change and move on and that’s what I decided to do,” Bremer said at the council meeting. Bremer said he was giving the council months of notice so it could have a relaxed search for a replacement. The city council terminated the city attorney, Pam Booker, in February and hasn’t yet replaced her. Oravec asked at the meeting

Bremer was really ready to depart. “Are you sure now is the time?,” he said to Bremer, who responded with a nod. Bremer has been the city manager for about three years. During that time Port St. Lucie has had a swirl of previous bad economic-development gambles haunting it, including the bankruptcy of the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida in Tradition. The failed economic-development gambles led the council to raise property taxes significantly last year. Council member Shannon Martin lamented Bremer’s announcement. “Jeff, you really provided the balance the city needed,” she said. She added, “You were handed many, many challenges and you handled them and came through well.” Michelle Berger said she feared that finding a replacement would be another risky dice throw for a recovering city. “What happens with the continuity?,” she said at the meeting.

That’s why the Treasure Coast Research Park and Space Florida Research Park recently collaborated to present a Water Quality Research Workshop at Exploration Park at the Kennedy Space Center. The event, which featured a number of the world’s leading researchers and experts in the field of environmental engineering, resource management, and marine science, discussed all aspects of water quality. No less than nine universities were represented at the conference, which provided opportunities for networking, idea-sharing, and information-gathering to a group whose purpose is the find and create the latest tools to help ensure our water security. Deputy Commissioner and Chief Science Officer at Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Stan Posey spoke about the issues at hand, and the day’s roundtables, presentations, and discussions covered everything from water on Mars to the possibility of recycling every drop of water used on the planet. Of course there was also much discussion and information disseminated with regard to how to

clean up and ensure the safety and health of the Indian River Lagoon, and a plethora of ideas, tools, and technology available and in the works were considered. According to Treasure Coast Research Park CEO Ben DeVries, “Water is truly the foundation of Florida’s economy, and we need tools reflecting the latest technology to improve Florida’s water security. Missoula Children’s Theatre returns STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — One of the hallmarks of a Missoula Children’s Theatre production is that a familiar story is told in an entirely new way. Each production has an original book, music and lyrics. Missoula Children’s Theatre will hold three workshops at the Sunrise Theatre this summer. The first, “The Princess and the Pea,” was written by Michael McGill. It tells the story of a kingdom of Snow, full of Blizzard Bringers, Icicle Sharpeners and Snow Smoothers. They are ruled by the Storm King and the Snow King. Of course, there is a Prince looking for a Princess to share the throne. There is another kingdom, of rolling hills, flowers and running streams. The Princess and her friend, the Pea, live with her parents, King Size and Queen Size and the subjects, Flower Gardeners, Tree Barkers and Green Shoot Growers. The two kingdoms don’t think they have anything in common, but maybe that’s not the case. Just ask the dancing Dust Bunnies and the Leprechauns. There may also be some phony Princesses, so the Prince will have to be very careful as he searches for his Princess.

Kate Schwarz is the tour marketing assistant for MCT. Last year, she was an actor/director and came to Fort Pierce. She spoke from the home office in Missoula about the program. “We train new actor/directors twice a year,” she said. “We are training 47 and they will join veterans to make up 45 teams (of two) this summer.” MCT’s programs cover all 50 states, all of the Canadian provinces and 17 countries, where they visit military bases. It is the world’s largest touring children’s theater company. “We go to different geographic locations, different economic situations and family backgrounds,” Schwarz said. “We get to reach many types of children across the country and the world. We try to reach communities who don’t have as many resources to provide the arts.” Schwarz said that all of the shows have a message. “There’s always a moral,” she said. “It may be acknowledging our differences but realizing we’re the same or it may be about teamwork. Each show has its own message. It’s not necessarily about the show, it’s the other skills the children develop during the week like confidence and (making) friends. STUART – This time of year brings all kinds of exciting news for those of us who love the arts and entertainment. The Lyric Theatre has unveiled its 2016-2017 season and it is a mix of the new, returning favorites and new twists on performances by those we‘ve come to love at the Lyric. Tickets are on sale now for Lyric members. There are three names that caught my eye immediately. Legendary is a word that is overused, but it fits all three. Soprano Renee Fleming, the legendary opera star, comes to the Lyric Jan. 31. Legendary comedian Lily Tomlin returns for two nights, Feb. 6-7. Finally, legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman teams with pianist Rohan De Silva March 7. And did I mention that 3 Redneck Tenors are back? The season opens Dec. 6 with “A Peter White Christmas,” featuring Peter White, Rick Braun and Euge Groove. Groove, a saxophonist, replaces Mindi Abair this year, but all the favorite songs and special spins on classic tunes will usher in the season. Dec. 14 brings “Atlantic City Boys with a Holiday Twist.” The boys recall the sound of the ‘60s, performing hits like “Build Me Up, Buttercup,” and “In the Still of the Night.” Given the season, they’ll add some Christmas and Chanukah classics, as well. “A Jew, an Irishman and Italian Walk into a Bar” bills itself as an evening of clean stand-up comedy. The Dec. 18 show marks the return of Freddy Roman to the Lyric and is perfect for the entire family. The Capitol Steps return Jan. 4 with a show called “What to

Expect when You’re Electing.” The Steps are always popular, and never more so when politics is wild and crazy. “Waist Watchers: The Musical” comes to town Jan. 10. For those who loved “Menopause! The Musical,” this show that takes place in a women’s gym is sure to please. There are songs like “Botox Queen” (think ABBA) and “I Went to the Buffet Line,” (think Marvin Gaye. Every woman-and the man who loves her-can relate. The 5 Irish Tenors comes to town Jan. 14 for two shows. The five men will perform a collection of Irish tunes and classic opera arias. Jarrod Spector presents “A Little Help from My Friends” Jan 16. The star of “Jersey Boys” brings this production that explores the music of Frankie Valli from the Beach Boys to Paul McCartney. Spector played Valli on Broadway for five years and relates some of his experiences. Comedian Kathleen Madigan, a Lyric favorite, returns Jan. 19. She has been called “the funniest woman doing stand-up now” and has started in her own specials on HBO and Comedy Central. The Glenn Miller Orchestra, an authentic recreation of the renowned ensemble, brings the Big Band sounds to the Lyric Jan. 20 for two shows. Up-and-coming blue grass musician and mandolin prodigy Sierra Hull returns to the Lyric Jan. 21. Hull is the first bluegrass musician to receive a presidential scholarship at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and has redefined the genre. “Beehive: the ‘60s Musical 30th Anniversary Tour” comes to town Feb. 1-2 for three shows. The fastpaced a cappella show features everything from Gregorian chants to barber shop quartets, from the Beatles to Bruno Mars. “Pump Boys and Dinettes” rolls in Feb. 8 for two shows. The Broadway hit was nominated for three Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards and is one of the happiest shows around. In “The Mystical Arts of Tibet,” multiphonic singers from a Tibetan monastery will perform sacred temple music and masked dances as part of their multinational tour for world healing. They have been endorsed by the Dalai Lama and performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The performances are Feb. 10-11. “Four Bitchin’ Babes” return Feb. 12 with a new show, “Hormonal Imbalance v2.5 A Mood Swinging Musical Revue.” They perform all their fan favorites and are a perfect girls’ night out. On Feb. 13, “’50s Dance Party” recreates the last tour of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. It includes songs like “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” and “La Bamba,” and stars John

Mueller, the former star of the musical “Buddy…the Buddy Holly Story.” Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, is “Live in Central Park (Revisited): Celebrating Andrea Bocelli’s Concerto: One Night in Central Park.” This show recreates the Sept. 16, 2011 concert Bocelli performed in New York in front of 60,000 fans. “The Ladies? From Jersey: An Evening of Clean Stand-Up Comedy,” features comedians Tammy Pescatelli and Karen Rontowski. The Feb 16 show brings a little bit of Jersey to Florida. “Sounds of Soul” comes to town Feb. 18. The Motown tribute show features six performers and all of the greatest hits from the Four Tops to Tina Turner to the Temptations and Supremes. “Doo Wop Project,” on Feb. 22, features the stars of the Broadway hit “Jersey Boys.” It has music from the Belmonts and the Crests and some of the more modern manifestations of the genre with the music of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. “Live from Nashville” on Feb. 23 features the hits of musicians from Patsy Cline to Johnny Cash.
