ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Dozens of churches will be part of the fourth Port St. Lucie & The Treasure Coast God Belongs in My City Prayer Walk on Saturday, May 14. Tradition’s Living Faith Church and Morningside

Church, which has its West Campus in St. Lucie West, are among them. “What we do along the walk is we stop in seven different places and pray for specific needs,” Agnes Palmer, coordinator, said. The walk will be at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, 9221 Civic Center Place. Registration will start at 8 a.m. and the event will kick off at 9 a.m. There’ll be a

short opening program including the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance led by Royal Rangers. The walk is about 1.3 miles. “We begin the walk around 9:30 (a.m.),” Palmer said. “It takes about an hour and a half with the prayer stops.” There’ll be a tent for people who

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — With a carefully crafted order that took more than an hour to read in open court, Circuit Judge Dan Vaughn ordered the death penalty for Eriese Tisdale Friday, April 29. Tisdale, who was convicted last year of first-degree murder and other related crimes in the 2013 death of St. Lucie County Sheriff Sgt. Gary Morales, lowered his head briefly as Vaughn continued his sentence, which also included two 15-year sentences and a 5-year sentence, all to run consecutively with the death sentence. Perhaps equally moot, along with the sentences to run consecutively after Tisdale’s execution, is the $109,935.35 bill the judge approved as the Public Defender’s Office’s cost of Tisdale’s defense. Tisdale waived his right to contest that bill. The other sentences were for aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, and fleeing and eluding police

At the darkest time, more than 10 years ago, his mother made a promise to herself and to God. “I promised that if he made it through, that when he graduated from high school, I would be there for a child during the worst time of their lives.” Cody is now nearly 20 and a student at Florida’s Polytechnic, a new part of the state university system in Lakeland devoted to math, technology, science and engineering, He is interested computers and cyber gaming. Cody has made the proverbial lemonade out of lemons, telling youngsters undergoing hard times that they could use what they were going through to be their (whole) stories or use it to be their launching pads. Cascadians take issue with email Dear Editor: It is 2 in the afternoon on Friday, April 22. A retired prosecutor and neighbor here at Cascades, Peter Knoll, and I are escorted into a conference room. It is located in Building B in the Port St. Lucie City Hall Plaza. We are greeted by four members of the City’s Building Department, as well as Keri S. Norbraten, staff attorney. I am seated at the head of the table with Peter (acting as an observer) to my left. The atmosphere is very somber as the City employees introduce themselves and give Peter and me their business cards. A women seated to my left, next to Ms. Norbraten, appears very anxious. Her name is Donna Noto. She is a contractor licensing coordinator — a long-time City employee. I do not recall ever seeing her before today’s

meeting. She peers cautiously at me. The proceedings are about to start. Various papers including letters and e-mails are spread on the conference table. But now the participants are focused on a single e-mail, an e-mail from Dave Caron to me, subject: “PSL Licensing office.” Mr. Caron is a resident of Cascades and managing editor of the Cascadian, a monthly magazine for Cascades’ residents. He is not a City of Port St. Lucie employee. His e-mail is reproduced below: “Mr. Pritchard, This afternoon, I spoke to Don-

na Noto with the Dept. of licensing for the City of Port St. Lucie. She is extremely upset that you and your friends have been emailing and calling them numerous times, complaining about the advertisement of Dom’s Handyman’s Service in the Cascades Residents Directory. As usual, you and your friends do no fact checking before embarking on your personal crusades. For your information, Dom’s Handyman Service has not been in business for quite some time now. The ad that appears in the resident’s directory was placed before he closed his business down a year ago. Since

we update the directory every two years, any advertising that was placed will be there until the new directory is updated and reprinted come this November, 2015. information, it was revealed that an elaborate criminal enterprise with a network stretching from Tampa to the Florida Keys was based out of St. Lucie County. “Our investigation revealed activity that included car and boat theft, dealing in stolen property, extortion, insurance fraud, trafficking, sale, delivery, possession and distribution of controlled substances to include cocaine, marijuana and other scheduled narcotics,” Mascara said. “It was at this point that we requested the assistance of our state and local partners to build an effective and solid case against these individuals and bring this activity to an end.” According to the Sheriff, assistance was provided from the federal Department of Homeland Security Investigations/ Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the Miami-Dade Police Department. The Office of Statewide Prosecution coordinated the legal aspects of the investigation since the criminal enterprise was actively involved in multiple judicial circuits. “Through the formation of our

multi-agency task force, and under the guidance of the Office of Statewide Prosecution, a court-ordered wiretap was implemented to gain as much information as possible about the scope and depth of the criminal enterprise,” Mascara said. “Also, during this time, detectives monitored specific phone lines for high-ranking members of the organization.” According to the Sheriff, the wiretap was authorized under Florida Statute 934, and required a court order by a judge. According to the Sheriff, the criminal enterprise was actively involved in stealing boats and car and boat motors, removing the VINs and then profiting on the sale to further the drug trafficking activities. Other illegal activities involved loans to individuals that were then extorted by threats of violence, and helping to defraud insurance companies through false claims. “From September through April of 2016, surveillance was conducted on high-ranking members of the criminal enterprise and sufficient evidence was gathered to arrest Ivan Blanco-Avila, 40, Rolando Garcia Ruiz, 67, Rolando Garcia Gar-

ST. LUCIE WEST — April 23, Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club was all a-glitter with vernal flair, as the Port St. Lucie Business Women convened for their 26th annual spring fashion show. This year the theme was “Spring Bling,” inviting members and patrons to show off their finest pastoral hues and frolic some accessories, donate to a good cause, and enjoy the company and solidarity of the hundreds of community members who attended. Last year, the fundraiser event, which has been hosted at Harbour Ridge for nearly a decade, raised more than $18,000. This year the intention was to surpass it with a silent auction and raffled prizes that featured a new Apple or Android watch and a 3-day vacation package to Key West. Every year, G. Alan’s Fine Jewelry and Coin in Fort Pierce contributes a specialized premium piece of jewelry; this year, they raffled off a custom-made 14-carat gold

necklace inset with Mexican fire opal and blue sapphire priced at $28,000, that captured the sparkle of jubilant youth. All of the event’s proceeds are donated by the Biz Women to local charities that support women and children in the community. In the past, they have given to Meals on Wheels, CASTLE, and WPSL Christmas kids, among other non-profits. They also offer annual scholarships to women through IRSC, and much of the proceeds from their fundraiser go to support this cause. The event started in 1990 as just a fun day out for the girls, says Karen Miret, a Realtor from St. Lucie West and original charter member — Miret and Lee Hicks, also from St. Lucie West, are the only two founding members who remain active in the club. They started off with the scholarship program, Miret says, and grew exponentially from there. Over the years, the affair has gathered so much buzz and attention, that in recent years they’ve had donors lining up and tickets selling out. While the PSL Biz Women have

TISDALE from page A1 with lights and sirens. Though silent during his trial, Tisdale gave a rambling speech – at times almost apologetic, but mostly defiant – before Vaughn delivered his sentence. In one breath, Tisdale told the Morales family he was “truly regretful to be responsible for the pain they have today,” but in the next he implied he was a victim of racial profiling and that he feared for his life when he shot Morales. “No man was there to know what was in my heart, to know what I had in my eyes, and the feeling I had in my chest on February 28, 2013,” Tisdale said. He said laws were needed to curtail the “perpetual cycle of violence” that allow police officers to kill young people “without repercussions,” saying he spoke “for all those young men who don’t have no voice, who have no understanding of why they can walk the street and be harassed for no reason at all.” Tisdale’s speech “was offensive to me, to the Morales family, to anyone who heard it,” Chief Assistant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl said later. “Being the pseudo-intellectual philosopher that he is, why didn’t he get on the witness stand and say that,” Bakkedahl said, noting that Tisdale did not testify during

his trial. “I would have loved to engage him on his theory of race relations.” After Assistant Public Defender Mary Celidonio argued for Vaughn to spare Tisdale’s life, Bakkedahl told the judge the state could not appeal a life sentence, but a death sentence will still be reviewed by courts numerous times. Bakkedahl also apologized to the Morales family for “the broken and dysfunctional criminal justice system … that for almost over four decades the court in Florida and the United States Supreme Court have had a very specific set of rules that I told them would apply. “And now they have suffered additional pain and agony as the result of a 10-page, hastily drafted opinion which provides your honor and the Florida Supreme Court with virtually no guidance, and with the sweep of a pen they dismiss over 40 years of jurisprudence in the capital scheme.” Bakkedahl was referring to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared unconstitutional Florida’s death penalty law because it gave the judge too much leeway and considered the jury’s recommendation in the penalty phase of the trial only advisory. cated – and delayed -- Tisdale’s sentencing. Since then, the Florida Legislature hurriedly enacted a substitute law, which required at least a 10-2 majority of the jury to recommend death. Though Florida’s new law elevates the majority requirement for the jury’s vote on the death penalty from seven to 10, Florida remains one of only states – with Alabama and Maryland — that do not require a unanimous jury verdict on the death penalty. The jury of seven women and five men that convicted Tisdale on Oct. 1 of first-degree premeditated murder in the Feb. 28, 2013, shooting of the 35-yearold Morales took less than three hours after hearing evidence in the trial’s penalty phase to vote 9-3 for the death penalty. The Florida Supreme Court has yet to rule whether the new law should be applied retroactively, which would convert Tisdale’s sentence to life in prison without parole. Bakkedahl said Vaughn’s sentencing order was “probably one of the most well-reasoned, well-written sentencing orders I’ve seen in 25 years.” In his order, Vaughn went through each mitigating factor

Sheriff Ken Mascara said he doesn’t believe the death penalty provides any deterrent to those who might kill law enforcement officers, but “we have some closure today for us and some sense of justice for the family.” Tisdale was delivered on Monday to the Florida State Prison in Raiford by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department. Whether Tisdale’s death sentence is ever carried out remains to be seen. A death case less complicated than Tisdale’s usually takes about 15 years to wade through the automatic appeals required by law.

If they get good grades, they check in. We can still see the kids.” Denig grew up in Elmont, on Long Island, and, in one of those weird coincidences that happen in Florida, her husband, Norman, attended the high school in Bellmore where my mother taught. Although they were there at the same time, their paths didn’t cross. Norman Denig’s family owned a marina. “We decided we wanted a house on the water and we couldn’t afford it on Long Island,” Denig said. “My husband grew up on the water and it’s in his DNA.” In 1990, the couple moved to Florida and had son Matthew, 23, and Cody, Denig now has three GAL kids who range in age from 14 months to 8 years. “Somebody had to advocate for these kids,” she said. “I don’t get paid. We are volunteers. We are the voice of these children and because we are volunteers, it’s not a job, it’s our passion.” While the GALs sometimes make court appearances, they do not have to be lawyers. “I’m a mom, not a lawyer, teach-

er or doctor,” Denig said, “I’m an advocate. I was an advocate for a child with cancer. You see kids going through the worst times and you can be their voice, their constant, for what’s in their best interest, Other than my own children, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.” Denig noted that there is a team behind her, including a supervisor and staff attorney. She fills out reports every six months for judicial review, to update the court on the status of the children and on any changes in their needs. It’s given to the supervisor and the attorney. Denig said she may not have to say anything at all. “You’re not the lawyer,” she said. “GAL has lawyers.” Denig said that what is important is the relationship that develops with the child. If a change in visitation is requested, the GAL is in the best position to find out what the child is thinking. “You’re not doing it alone,” she said, “You always have a supervisor and there is a team behind you. That’s why I love GAL. I was afforded an open-ended opportunity to ask questions regarding the results of the City’s investigation of Mr. Caron’s e-mail statements. Based on the information provided by the city’s Building Department and Ms. Norbraten, I report the following: First, Ms. Noto maintains that she does not know Mr. Caron and did not recall having any conversation with him. Second, in his e-mail, Mr. Caron states, “A simple phone call to me would have answered your questions.” The City has not authorized Mr. Caron to make any statements or answer questions. He does not represent the City. Third, Ms. Noto indicated that she never used the words “out of control.” Nor does she use the term “harassment” when speaking to or about customers. Other members of the Building Department were supportive of Ms. Noto’s job performance and professionalism. Fourth, Ms. Norbraten indicated that Mr. Caron did not have any authority to make his closing statement, “Let me make this perfectly clear, I do not want to have any more phone calls with this department, regarding this matter.” Ms. Norbraten again noted that he does not represent the City. Fifth, Mr. Caron’s e-mail certainly caused grief for Ms. Noto;

it was very upsetting and threatening to me; and the investigation cost taxpayers in terms of lost productivity. Sixth, since Mr. Caron was not a City employee and (in his e-mail) did not explicitly say he was, the City could not take legal action against him. Nonetheless, the City did investigate. When I read Mr. Caron’s e-mail, and subsequently reported it to former City Attorney Pam Booker, I believed that Mr. Caron was holding himself out to be a representative of our City. I guess he was just pretending. Seventh, I believe Mr. Caron was attempting to intimidate me – perhaps in an attempt to cover up something. His e-mail presents a host of unanswered questions. Cascadians deserve full transparency in their governance. Therefore, I respectfully request that the Cascades HOA Board investigate Mr. Caron’s actions. As noted above, he holds a responsible position as the managing editor of the Cascadian. We Cascadians deserve a person of highest integrity to manage our residents’ magazine. Finally, I want to thank Mayor Oravec, Ms. Norbraten, and the members of the Building and Legal Departments for the time and effort they gave in the investigation of Mr. Caron’s e-mail. Once you’re all signed up for summer camp, it’s just a matter of counting the days until you go. Oh wait...You’ve got some prepping to do, don’t you? Here are some tips: Talk to your family •Make sure they know if you’re nervous, excited, curious-whatever. •What are you worried about? (Making friends? Feeling homesick? A health problem?) •What are you excited about? (Making friends? Trying new things? Having fun?) •Ask questions about their own summer camp experiences. Did they go? What was fun, and what was challenging? Do they have photos, videos, or scrapbooks they can share with you? •Remember: Your parents might need some time to deal with their own feelings, especially if this is the first time they’ve sent you to camp. Some grown-ups can be nervous or even afraid of being separated from their kids. Take it from Sarah, 12, who told us:

Read up on camp information Make sure your camp sends you everything they can ahead of time, such as: •An activity and event schedule •A book of rules and regulations •A map of the camp itself The more you know about what to expect, the more likely you are to have fun from day one. Get used to being away from home

If you’ve never been away from home or your parents, you might be nervous. One way to get used to the idea is to plan a trip away from home alone -- maybe to a grandparent’s house -- a few months or weeks before camp. Get organized •Make a list of things you need to buy and things you need to pack. Your camp will probably send or e-mail you a list of musthave supplies. •Pack things that you want to have with you, but consider leaving anything that’s truly valuable or irreplaceable at home. If there’s something really special

that you’d like to bring but don’t want to lose, consider taking a picture of it and just bringing that! •Put your name on everything you bring-in permanent marker! This will help you avoid arguments about what belongs to who, and help your stuff get back to you if you misplace it. A mental “packing list” Here are some other things that are important to bring to camp with you. They’re free, easy to pack, and will come in super-handy all summer long:

We all have something in common. We love giving back to the community.” It is incredible to see the creative efforts that go into the fashion show event, she says, all the older members helping the newer ones so that everything comes off smoothly. “Everyone just jumps in and helps. It’s a lot of fun.” After guests sat down to an exquisite gourmet lunch, catered by Harbour Ridge, the crowd was greeted with opening remarks from the club’s President Cooie Newman, the event’s chair Karen Ostrand, and future president Tammy Crandell, who commemorated all of the creative people without whom the event could never have happened, giving special remembrance to Jim Lawless, who had helped as a raffle vendor for years before passing away this year. Then came what everyone had been waiting for. Following a delightful ballroom dancing set performed by Dolores and Bob Salvato from Hutchinson Island, the models began streaming out, showcasing glamorous and spunky outfits that filled hearts with spring joviality. The show, curated by Lynda Hartley-Urban, a former fashionista who has coordinated the fashion show for the Biz Women for several years, presented all the latest trends from eight different shops in Harbour Bay Plaza. The designs, some of which were drawn straight from Monet’s palette, ran the gamut from shirts and slacks with frisky peekaboo cutaways to an elegant fringed dress the color of twilight and some casual boating attire modeled by chamber of commerce

The fashions came from Chico’s, Evelyn and Arthur, Moon Islander, and “So Unique” Gallery Boutique, among others. What began 35 years ago merely as a social klatsch among four young bankers and quickly grew into an organization of 21 charter members, has over the years magnetized business women and enriched the community around them. Miret says that an amazing intimacy and independence exists within their organization. They do not belong to any national affiliation which allows them to take their own initiative and make their own decisions about how to raise funds and for what causes. “It’s a very intimate group,” says Miret, “and doesn’t stop at networking but builds friendships. Everyone has a say in what we do, so that gives us a lot of power.” Hicks adds that many of her lifelong relationships have come out of the organization. “And the people who we’ve helped, the women and children who benefit from our services, come back to us and let us know how we’ve really helped them.”

Many, he said, are more than recreational players. “You have people in this community that drive an hour, an hour and a half to see the Orlando City,” Arbuzow said. The Surf will add about $3 million in economic activity to Port St. Lucie, much of it will churn in St. Lucie West and Tradition, as soccer fans head out for meals and shopping after games. Additionally, the Surf is lifting the quality of youth soccer in the area by doing clinics with clubs such as St. Lucie West’s Mako Soccer Club. Arbuzow said the Surf aim to be a pro team within two to four seasons. He said the support is

there for it. “We have been welcomed by the Port St. Lucie community,’ he said. “Local businesses — we have plenty of sponsorship from the community to make this happen.” No matter how much support a team gets from local government and business leaders, however, it’s the fans that make a team. “The biggest challenge for us is we want everybody, sport fans, soccer fans, to know that it’s a safe family environment and we’ve made it affordable for families,” Arbuzow said. Tickets will be $5. “We want to make it a family thing,” Arbuzow said. “A family of four can go and get in for $20.” Season passes for the home games are $20.

Even after that, people still lined the unpainted walls; others mulled about in the under-construction church seeing where rooms will be. Pastors Travis and Jenni O’Neal sat at a small, unadorned table in front of the makeshift church sanctuary talking causally.

The pair will lead the Christ Fellowship’s Tradition campus when it’s up. The opening is planned for July, according to the church’s Facebook page. The O’Neals spoke about Christ Fellowship being a place for neighbors to help and support each other in many ways. “Our church is about each other,” Travis said. its first public “connect event.” It’s hard to estimate the number of attendees, but it could have reached past 1,000. The church as had smaller gatherings before then. Those were done by mailed invitations to folks living near the church’s new facility. Christ Fellowship made a stir last year when it approached the city with a $13 million offer to buy the defunct Digital Domain’s Tradition Studios. That was far less than the city hoped to get for an unwanted asset from a failed economic-development project, and the proposed sale would take the valuable property off tax rolls. But every other potential buyer was coming up with more problems than cash. Where others may have seen random frustration for Port St. Lucie, the church saw God’s plan, Travis said. “Port St. Lucie has been in our senior pastor’s heart for a while,” Travis said. He added, “We know that we know that we know that God is in this.” In July Port St. Lucie City Manager Jeff Bremer ceremonially handed the keys of Tradition Studios over to Christ Fellowship pastors. Christ Fellowship tore out walls in the 115,000-square-foot Tradition building to reconfigure its interior to create classrooms and a sanctuary. It plans to later build a larger sanctuary on the southwestern side of the building. Buying the building came about the same time the Palm Beach

Gardens church was preparing to open its new 50,000-squarefoot Stuart campus. That facility, which opened in August, was its eighth. The church had been holding services at Stuart’s South Fork High School before then. The church claims about 21,000 weekly attendees among its facilities, which span from Palm Beach County westward to Okeechobee. The church also has a location in New York City. Christ Fellowship is already active in Port St. Lucie. The day after the connect event members helped paint a Boys & Girls Club facility. Earlier about 110 people gathered at the Tradition campus to help pack almost 330,000 meal boxes bound for western Africa. In an interview, O’Neal said Christ Fellowship aims to help Port St. Lucie in many ways. “We’re just going to catch a vision of what we’re going to do in Port St. Lucie,” he said. But one thing is certain. “The most important thing we can offer is Jesus Christ,” Travis said. When Christ Fellowship opens it’ll be the only permanent-structure church in Tradition. There are at least two other churches meeting in Tradition. Exponential Church meets at Renaissance Charter School at 10900 S.W. Tradition Parkway. Larry Lee will make a welcome visit to the United Against Poverty’s UP Center at 2520 Orange Ave., Fort Pierce, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 5 to present a State Farm Insurance check of $10,000. The Center (formerly known as Harvest Food and Outreach) is pleased to receive State Farm’s generous grant. Lee has been actively involved with the Center, which is located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, the focus of the Restoring the Village Initiative. The funds will be used to support the UP Center mission of “lifting lives” by offering a hand up to those in the community struggling in their fight against poverty. United Against Poverty offers programs designed to conserve resources; enhance knowledge, skills and experience; provide hope and crisis stabilization; and restore dignity, choice and control. It’s impossible to estimate the number of pray walkers who attended previous years’ events. Nationally God Belongs in My City started in New York City in 2009. An atheist group put up advertisements. Church youth groups responded by rapidly organizing a prayer walk wearing shirts that read, “God belongs in my city.” About 1,500 attended the walk. The idea stuck and spread. It’s now an annual event in many places. Palmer was largely responsible for bringing the walk to the area. She was part of the youth ministry at Genesis Community Church TC. She tried organizing a citywide prayer walk at the church. “God put it on my heart to do a prayer walk and it wouldn’t come together for me,” Palmer said. Then she’d gone to another event at the civic center. “I found out that my kids went to school with other Christian kids and didn’t know it, because they went to different churches,” Palmer said.

She decided instead of hosting a prayer walk starting at her church to do it at the civic center, so area Christians discover others they might already know. “I contacted the organizers (of God Belongs in My City) in New York and started doing it here,” Palmer said. Having the walk at the civic center, Palmer said, allows it to be about the broader Christian community, rather than individual churches. However, pastors will assemble at a tent to meet with folks wanting individual prayer. “We strongly discourage people on the day of the walk from wearing anything that identifies a church,” Palmer said. There’ll be water stations along

the prayer walk. Palmer said folks should wear comfortable shoes and sunblock. God Belongs in My City T-shirts will be available for purchase. Parents must decide if youngsters are up to the rigors of walking, standing and praying for about 90 minutes. After the walk, which is free, there’ll be a show by Thomas Ware and Contagious Hope “He will be joined by Anthony Ryan,” Palmer said. “He’s a local, well-known Christian reggae artist. There will be solos, duets, and ensemble singing. The highlights include “Pulled” from “The Addams Family,” sung by Amber Souza; “There’s Music in You” from “Cinderella,” sung by Giselle Beuscher; “Peas in a Pod,” from “Grey Gardens,” sung by Maria Olandez and Sarah Rahming; “When I Look at You,” from “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” performed by Annette Godfrey, “How I Am,” from “Little Women,” sung by Brenden Walsh; and a medley from “Kinky Boots,” the musical by Cyndi Lauper.

ast year, a group of kids decided not to sleep in during their summer vacations. Instead, they rose by 9 a.m. (plenty early for teens), and made their way down Indian River Drive to the home office of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society for a summer day camp unlike any other. There, they’d spend four hours every day for one or two weeks learning tips from professional musicians, working one-to-one with the same players who have played back up for Sammy Davis, Jr., Mel Tormé, Johnny Mathis, Sting, Styx, Aretha Franklin and hundreds of other superstars and super talents. An offering created by Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society and run by members who are all professional musicians, educators, and dedicated volunteers, the great thing about Summer Jazz Camp is that it’s not just for kids. Last year’s Jazz Campers ranged in age from 13 to 70, and it was the most successful and enjoyable camp for producers and participants alike. The “kids” at Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society’s Summer Jazz Camp learn timing tips, how to improvise on the fly, how to cover when someone misses an entrance or starts in the wrong key, and how to be a professional musician and performer. The kinds of lessons campers learn from the pros are the ones that turn an or-

dinary young musician into a true talent and help ignite a fire for performing and making music that may last a lifetime. For the kids involved in the annuDon Bestor al one or two-week long Jazz Camp, it’s a chance to learn from the pros, practice and perfect the musical skills they’re starting to learn in their regular instrumental lessons and music classes at school, and a chance to interact with others who also love exploring music. Because the camp also attracts senior citizens and grown-ups who want to also learn from the pros, practice and perfect musical and instrumental skills, and interact with others who also love exploring music, Jazz Camp is a win-win for everyone – and a whole lot of fun. At the end of the second week of camp, all participants are encouraged to join the pros on stage at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre for a very special version of Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society’s weekly Jazz Jams at the Black Box. Each camper has a chance to play with the pros and take to the spotlight – usually for a solo or riff that often ends with the crowd on its feet in enthusiastic applause. It also helps to create lifelong memories for everyone involved. “My wife gave me a week of Jazz Camp last year as a gift for our wedding anniversary,” said Dan Hafner, one of the oldest “kids” in last year’s Jazz Camp. “I learned so much and had so much fun during the first week that I went back for the second and enjoyed it just as much. It was great to interact with the professional musicians, and I loved hearing the progress made by the talented young musicians who are just getting started. I’m planning to go back again this year!” The first week of this year’s Jazz Camp will begin Monday, June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Jazz Society’s offices just off Indian River Drive north of Midway Road. Each day’s session runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and campers bring their own bag lunch every day except Fridays, when lunch is provided. The second week of camp will be held June 27th through July 1st, and campers

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Andrew Schmeer Foundation honors the memory of Andrew Schmeer, who was tragically killed on Sept. 8, 2014 in a car accident. Andrew graduated from Lincoln Park Academy High School in May 2006 with his International Baccalaureate Diploma. Throughout his years, Andrew played competitive soccer for the Port St. Lucie Hurricanes, Jensen Beach Tigers, Treasure Coast United and the Sebastian State Cup Soccer Leagues. Andrew played Varsity Soccer for six years for the Lincoln Park Academy Greyhounds and was captain of the team for three years. Andrew was a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and a seven year member of the Lincoln Park Academy Concert Band. His kind spirit and eagerness to help others was evident in his outgoing personality. Andrew’s zest of life, genuine dedication to his friends and family makes all who know him love him. Andrew went on to further his education at the University of Florida, where he earned his degree at the Warrington College of Business Administration. Andrew was an active participant with the local animal shelters, Relay for Life, and United Way activities. Funds raised through the foundation are used to help to recognize well-rounded students, who share the same interests as Andrew, along the Treasure Coast by providing college scholarships for those in need.
