ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It’s the last weekend to hit the 51st annual St. Lucie County Fair, wrapping a 10-day run of fun. The fair will end on Sunday, March 6, but before it does there’ll be a hair band taking audiences back to the 1980s, and a demolition derby taking them back to childhood. C’mon, who didn’t slam their Matchbox cars together for fun? “This is the largest single event on the Treasure Coast,” Jeanne Keaton, fair manager, said. “It’s family-oriented and a fun, safe atmosphere.” The fair attracts about 130,000 a year to its 250-acre site at 15601 W. Midway Road, in Fort Pierce. This year the fair has a 15-acre midway with more than 40 rides provided by Murphy Bros. Expositions and James E. Strates Shows. Keaton didn’t want to “guess on God and the weather,” so said this year will probably be about the same. But— “We broke all records on (opening) night, with the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association rodeo being the main entertainment,” Keaton said. “We broke records in the parking lot, we

Crosstown Parkway super-street recommendation draws scrutiny from PSL residents and council Bruno Moore

PORT ST. LUCIE — The Crosstown Parkway Extension Project is slated to be the first bridge over the St. Lucie River to be built in decades. It’s the first roadway involving public input
for sculptures and landscaping and it might be the first roadway in the state of Florida to feature a bulked up intersection and traffic control system called a super-street. Unlike the traditional four-way intersection currently shuffling traffic at Floresta Drive and West Virginia Drive (which will become Crosstown), the su-
per-street intersection will make use of pedestrian walkways, dedicated U-turn areas and curbed medians, all in an effort to accept the increased traffic expected to use the overpass. For instance, northbound traffic on Floresta wanting to go west on Crosstown will need

Joe ‘The Biker’ roars onto local school stages with anti-bullying message Bruno Moore

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — He roars his custom, chromed-out Harley Davidson onto the stage, engine growling and exhaust smelling of hot metal and burnt rubber. Decked out in a biker skull cap, mirrored glasses and handlebar moustache, Joe “The Biker” Wojcik cuts a formidable figure when he speaks to kids about bullying. He’s been doing appearances as Joe “The Biker” since 2008, when his alter-ego was born. After wrestling with his own experience being bullied as a young boy that nearly caused him to commit suicide, and while recovering from a near-fatal accident, Wojcik found his calling as an anti-bullying advocate. He recalls 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker’s suicide after being bullied in 2009, and says that’s when he realized his own experience might save lives. “That had a tremendous impact on me that day,” he says. “I realized we still have children out there that can’t manage bullying in their life.” That tragedy prompted Wojcik to pour everything he had into The Yubbie Foundation, the

LUCIE COUNTY — Even after serving 20 years as a St. Lucie County School Board member, Kathryn Hensley said she still has unfulfilled goals she wants to accomplish. “My passion continues to be the future of all children and the enhancement of opportunities in my county,” Hensley said. “There is work still to be done to create pathways to success for each child, and I am excited and energized by the possibilities.” Hensley announced last week on Facebook she plans to seek re-election. But she hadn’t officially filed as of Friday. So far, the only person that’s filed for the District 4 seat on the St. Lucie County School Board is James “Jamey” Capers. The District 2 and District 4 seats are the only two seats up for election this year. They hold the two longest-tenured school board members, Carol Hilson and Hensley. Hilson has filed for re-election to the District 2 seat. As of Friday, no opponents had filed for that seat. The school board non-partisan election will be held Aug. 30 during the statewide primary election. If a run-off is required, that would be during the general election on Nov. 8. The new term will begin on the second Tuesday after the general election, which will be Nov. 22. According to the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections

was raised by many television and movie police influences in the 70’s. Kojak covered integrity. Serpico covered honesty. Harry “Dirty Harry” Callahan covered the part about doing the right thing and my own father had that and more. It was our fifth class with Port St. Lucie’s City University, and this week we started by meeting at the PSL police department to delve into their operations. Some of the other topics covered in City University like public works, economic development and such, while they are topics that affect us, most people aren’t part of the process except on the receiving end. The topic of the police affects us daily and greatly here and across the nation. We see them every day, either on road patrol as we travel or working a detail at an event such as a Mets game. Linda Bartz, vice mayor of Port St. Lucie, started off by speaking of her affinity for the
police department and some conclusions she formed while joining a patrol car in a ride-a-long one shift. Bartz was followed by the executive director of the PSLPD, the police chief John Bolduc. Bolduc was appointed Chief of Police for the Port St. Lucie Police Department on Aug. 13, Mitch Kloorfain 2012. Bolduc asked the officers what the mission statement of the department was and to his surprise most weren’t able to recite it. “If they don’t know the mission statement how can they know the mission?” Bolduc asked us. The mission statement is ‘Through Courage, Knowledge, and Integrity, the Port St. Lucie Police Department is committed to superior customer service and remaining one of America’s safest cities.” The part of an officer’s courage is something we are all aware of. Here before if Your Voice News & Views was doing a story about, say, a proposed future land-use change in Tradition that’d affect the daily lives of a big swath of our readership, we’d call the city’s director of planning and have a conversation. We’d learn about the proposed land-use change and the part it played in a larger picture. Answered questions would create new and better questions and we’d learn lots of back stories important for us to understand in order to write meaningful articles accurate not only in facts, but in spirit, too. Much of what we learned in conversations with city staff didn’t appear as words in the print, but did appear as underlying concepts. A news article or column can be absolutely accurate in facts, but completely misleading in impressions. Now Your Voice can’t call any city employee except for the public information officer. We have to send her emails with our questions. She then has to send emails to half the city and get answers emailed back to her to then email to us. Does this sound awkward, draconian and chock-full of opportunities for miscommunications and accidental inaccuracies? That’s
because it is. This blanket policy only promises to curtail the press’ ability to gain important insights to share with our audiences grasped only through conversations. Bremer’s “Trilogy of Transparency” — part 3 hasn’t been published by press time — cites a another local publication’s story as the reason for the sweeping changes that effectively lock down city hall from journalism’s best practices. In an emailed response to queries sent through the city’s public information officer, Bremer downplayed the significant changes created by the policy. “It is not so much a change in policy but a return to a policy that was in place a number of years ago,” he wrote. “The reason for the return is to make sure that City Council and staff are made aware of potential news stories and so we are able to provide a response that reflects the position of the city.” If Bremer said that in a conversation, the next logical question would be, “Why did the city abandon the policy a number of years ago?” There was certainly a reason. To write a fair story, or editorial, it would be handy

CROSSTOWN from page A1 to first turn right to go east one block and then use the dedicated U-turn section to turn around and go west. Southbound Floresta traffic wanting to go east will need to turn right, go west and use that U-turn area to do the same thing. In short, there are no simple left turns off of either direction of Floresta. At the Feb. 8 city council meeting, the council’s reaction to the super-street design was tepid. The design team presented animations showing how the super-street would be incorporated into the overall Crosstown scheme. They presented a Power Point showing that the project was coming in under budget, even with the super-street included. Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec and Vice Mayor Linda Bartz were not impressed. “I’m really disappointed and displeased about the issues surrounding the super-street,” Mayor Oravec said after the presentation. He was referring to what he called the lack of public education about the design. The only public outreach regarding the super-street so far was during a public meeting to present project diagrams and information in

January. Port St. Lucie resident Julianne Gagliardo said the only two times she heard about the super-street were during the January meeting and the Feb. 8 council meeting. Upon addressing the council during the public forum, she shared her concerns. “If this design passes, I suspect the traffic on my street is going to increase significantly in volume and in speed with people avoiding the intersection,” Gagliardo said. “It seems everything about this project is designed to benefit everyone in our city except the people who are right there on ground zero,” she continued. That concern was reflected by Vice Mayor Bartz, who represents District 1, through which the Crosstown extension will run. “It will take a lot of education. The other concern I have are the integrity of the neighborhoods. We need to be prepared for that. You can’t put out millions of dollars for a street that’s going to fail immediately,” she said. Despite reservations by two leading council members and residents near “ground zero,” the official crosstown website www. crosstownextension.com, touts the benefits of the super-street

MOORE from page A7 meet, just like a lot of people throughout the Treasure Coast,” Moore said. “There’s nobody there in Tallahassee to say ‘these are my people and I’m here to represent them.’” Moore is familiar to many for his on-the-air work at various television and radio stations in South Florida. The Fort Pierce native has also done freelance work for area newspapers, including Your Voice News & Views, for which he’s a regular contributor. Moore said that while he’s covered government during his reporting career, it never was a great love of his. Not until 2012. In 2012 Moore worked locally on President Barack Obama’s campaign. Moore said that helped him see the majority of Republicans and Democrats share many things in common. One of them is that most struggle to make ends meet. Another is a sense of frustration that often it seems answers to problems are buried in political wrangling. “I related to a lot of what these people are going through,” Moore said. The 44-year-old said the biggest issue facing the newly form-
ing State Senate district is no news to anyone: it’s ending Lake Okeechobee discharges and restoring the Indian River Lagoon’s health. “The estuary really trumps them all,” Moore said. He said damage to the Indian River Lagoon hurts St. Lucie and Martin counties on numerous levels, financial and ecological. “There are species (in the lagoon) that are found nowhere else in the world,” he said. Moore said he’s not going to put forward a particular plan for ending Lake Okeechobee discharges and speeding lagoon restoration during the campaign. He said that’s been done, done and done. And the discharges continue damaging the lagoon. “There’s been millions and millions of dollars appropriated to lagoon restoration, and we just saw twice as much discharge,” he said. Rather, Moore said his promise is that, if elected, he’ll make sure there’s a parade of scientific and engineering experts through the Capitol Building making sure that no one there can claim ignorance about how to fix the problems. “I will listen to experts that are apparently not listened to (in

The foundation, so named for the disparaging nickname he was given as a young boy (“yubbie” is a derivative of chubby) empowers educators with the tools they need to address bullying, including a visit by Joe “The Biker.” Wojcik’s message is age-specific, and covers the many aspects of the bullying epidemic at grade-appropriate levels with program content tailored to each age group. “Joe The Biker is a very interesting personality,” Wojcik says about his other persona. “I have the ability to adjust my delivery to my audience.” He says for younger grades, he is up, moving and encouraging his audience to do the same. “I’m like a Baptist minister,’ he says. Wojcik’s migration to Florida happened about four years ago, when his wife took a job offer in Port St. Lucie. Since then, he’s spoken at schools as far south as Royal Palm Beach and has already bent the ear of the St. Lucie County School System and Port St. Lucie Police Department. Wojcik says the focus has recently shifted to fund-raising to be able to expand the foundation’s reach. He’s already done a lot through the local Rotary club, where he’s a member. With the fund-raising efforts, the goal is to put The Yubbie Foundation’s anti-bullying materials in every school at no charge. “I have to build my brand here so I work in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie,” Wojcik says. So far, Joe “The Biker” books and materials can be found in 12 St. Lucie County Schools. But even more important than saturating the school district with his books, Wojcik says, is saturating the district with the message within them. “I have a mission. It’s really to help kids feel good about themselves, no matter who they are. She said that in 1996 when she sought election to the school district, she perceived the district didn’t equally care about all the children. “That didn’t set well with me at the time,” she said. Since becoming a school board member, Hensley said, the district drop-out rate has declined, the research park was created and the district increased its partnerships with other education facilities. Hensley said she believes she helped bring about those accomplishments. Hensley said she worked to get the Children’s Services Council tax renewed and has supported the downtown Farmer’s Market.

to ask Bremer what that reason was, hear the explanation, and ask the natural questions that follow. At the end of the talk, Bremer’s words might make perfectly good sense. As it is with the awkward process of emailing through a third party, the journalist’s instinct is to call the answer bunk and say that anything the city is doing is a potential story, whether it gets covered or not, and the City Council and staff who interest journalists are — or should be — aware of that. In fairness, the city has shown some flexibility in the policy and allowed Your Voice News & Views to directly interview a department head for a story in this week’s paper. Through that conversation, Your Voice learned the parts of the story that we didn’t know were parts of the story, such as the City Council’s eagerness to help veterans with catastrophic disabilities through a proposed housing program. That fact made it to the story. That almost certainly wouldn’t have come up in emailed questions and answers. We hope that there’ll be numerous exceptions in the future if the policy sticks around.
Your Voice understands that the city staff shouldn’t fear being blindsided by unfairly critical press, and part of the manager’s job is to maintain the city’s image. Your Voice understands that there are reporters and publications that seem more interested in reporting negatives than positives. We understand that it’s tempting for a city to shut out such reporters and publications when they frequently get facts wrong. Your Voice understands it’s unethical for a city to talk to some reporters and not others based on which does what kinds of stories. But shutting down conversations with department heads critical to understanding stories — that’s taking a hammer to a fly. A blanket policy that — saving for flexibility — effectively shuts down the press’ ability to gain insights about stories through conversations will only result in a greater number of inaccurate stories — if not inaccurate in facts, inaccurate in impressions. Your Voice urges Bremer to reconsider the blanket policies outlined in “Trilogy of Transparency — Part 2” and take a more transparent approach to the press.

Keaton said. “It’s not a concert. It’s a show.” Hairball isn’t a tribute band; it’s a tribute to the 1980s. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free with admission. “Then Saturday at 6 (p.m.) is our extremely popular demolition derby,” Keaton said. Ah, shoot to thrill, play to kill. For those who don’t know, a demolition derby is a bunch of cars smashing, bashing and crashing to see who the last man, or woman, standing will be. Rather, the last one driving, really. The last car that’s still mobile under its own power wins. “It’s an up North thing, and I brought it here,” Keaton said. For those who like things a bit quieter, Keaton said there’s lots of opportunity to see local talent at the fair. Treasure Coast bands play on the two stages at various times. “Sit down in rocking chairs to listen to local talent,” she said. Additionally there’re displays of local arts and crafts talent. Keaton said fair visitors can see 623 youth entries in the art and photography display, and another 250 youth entries in crafts. Folks can also learn how to knit, crochet and sew at the fair. Then there’s the reason for county fairs — farming and ranching. “We pride ourselves in our agricultural education,” Keaton said. The fair opens at 4 p.m. on Friday, and closes at 1:30 am. On Saturday it’ll be open from noon to 1 a.m. Sunday it’ll be going noon to 11 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, and $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Those under 6 get in for free. The part about knowledge is something we need to keep applying to the officers and their perpetual training beyond what they learn in the police academy to keep up with the concerns of a community. Officers weren’t given any special training for the mentally handicapped or disabled like they are now. Integrity — now there is the one thing that has fueled the fire in so many police departments across our country now and over time. How our officers treat the public is directly connected to how they are treated by their superiors before going on patrol, was the mantra Chief Bolduc shared with the class. As a community we have been blessed, lucky, well governed, whatever you want to call it, that we have not had to deal with a tragedy like so many communities in the nation like Ferguson, Baltimore, Columbine, Sandy Hook and too many others are still working through. It didn’t sound to me like Chief Bolduc was going to wait for a tragedy to then mop up whatever the collateral damage would be. In the schools where I grew
up, there were what would be thought of now as ‘retro’ posters of a uniformed, clean cut policeman assisting a child with a tagline say that “The policeman is your friend.” We were greeted by the K-9 team with a demo of finding a controlled substance hidden in the room before they arrived. The dog was signaling his handler as soon as he entered the room before finding some planted marijuana behind the podium. We are the 9th largest city in Florida, but our neighborhoods still carry a small-town atmosphere within them. If Chief Bolduc says our police are more accessible I think, we should challenge that. When you see the police riding their bicycles through the area surrounding the Rave Theatre, take a moment and thank them for the safety they ensured to allow you that the only drama you have to work through is what you watched on the movie screen and not in your commute to the theatre … or just say hello. The Friendly Sons and Daughters of Ireland and the city’s Parks & Recreation Department are hosting the annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival and parade. “This is the 27th year that the club has had the (Port St. Lucie) St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” Jim Williams, general chairman of the festival, said. “Nine or 10 years ago we partnered with the city. ST. LUCIE WEST — On Jan. 30, a caring community held a pizza party and fundraiser at the Motorcoach RV resort in St. Lucie West to benefit the Toy Run organization. The fundraiser was organized by Nicole Roy and Andre Hamel, along with many other volunteers such as Diane Dufour, Rachel Larose, Christiane Authier, Juanita Cox, Jo-Ann Collins, Louise St. Pierre, Beth King, Bob Paterson, Pat Cundari. This fundraiser benefited the 2016 St Lucie County Toy Run that is put on by the Ft. Pierce Police Athletic League (PAL). Roy and Hamel were able to raise $2,668.32 for the kids of St Lucie County, which is approximately double what was raised
last year. “Last year in February we raised $1,380,” said Hamel. “We are very happy with the results.” The funds will go to the purchase of gifts for teenage boys and girls and will take place in the beginning of December. Residents from the St. Lucie West community will shop for teenage kids and distribute the gifts to disadvantaged children here in St Lucie County only. “The reason PAL asks for gifts for the older kids is because the Toy Run often gets overwhelmed with gifts for younger kids, but little for older kids,” said David Hillemann. “The police may show up at a house that has several children and they often have nothing to give to the older kids.” Donations were made by Amy Buchman, Dimitrio Garcia,

It’ll kick off with a carnival and entertainment on Friday around 5:30 p.m. Rowan the Wanderer, also known as Paul Rowan, will start the musical fun. The M & M Sweeties Baton Group will follow with a fire dance display. Then the Rowdy Micks will rock the seisiún. Friday will close at 9 p.m. so folks can get their rest for the parade. The festival will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and the parade will start at 11 a.m. “We’ll take applications to two days before to anyone who wants to march,” Williams said. “After the parade, we have the opening ceremony with some remarks from the Mayor.” Then the entertainment continues with an appearance by the Tir Na Greine School of Irish Dance. If you can’t figure out the Gaelic pronunciation, don’t worry about it. It means “Land of Sunshine.” The Rowdy Micks will be back, along with that Wandering Rowan. “We have another big group on Saturday,” Williams said. “Our main group on Saturday is Lahinch Mob.” The festival will continue until 10 p.m.
On Sunday the carnival will continue from noon to 6 p.m., but there won’t be any stage entertainment. While the festival is about family fun with a carnival, food, beer and wine, there is a serious note to sound this year. This is the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, organized by the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army took positions in key parts of Dublin on Monday, April 24, in 1916 to demand Irish freedom. The uprising lasted about a week before British forces crushed it. But Irish determination to self-rule fomented and within a few years the Irish War of Independence started. By 1921 the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, ending centuries of British rule in 26 of Ireland’s 26 counties. The treaty left six northern counties in the United Kingdom, and they remained a simmering stew of insurgent violence until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 created a more inclusive approach to government. Tutto Fresco tantalizes taste buds while giving generously to community FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — A restaurant that offers a softly lit, elegant dining area with a homey, family-type feel is a true hidden gem. This is just what Tutto Fresco delivers — beautiful décor and a fine dining experience, complemented by a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Amazing food is simply a bonus. My party and I were greeted by our very friendly server, Alyssa Fanelli. Fanelli started working for Joey Gambina and Pasquale Lamarra, the owners of the restaurant, two years ago after Tutto Fresco catered her wedding. She was so impressed with the job they did that after the wedding, she went right up to them and said, “I want to work for you!” Now Fanelli is serving there, as well as managing two days a week. She is very fond of her employers and has the utmost respect for them. “They have the biggest hearts,” she says. She explains that the restaurant does a lot of charity and philanthropic work, particularly with the Boys and Girls Club of America. They recently provided a location and catering for a prom for the organization. But charity work is only part of the Tutto Fresco equation,
which begins with its delicious menu, and more. Tutto Fresco’s chef and part owner Lamarra will cook either off of the menu or will also accommodate custom requests for his patrons. The restaurant is available for catering, as well as hosting parties and events. We were presented with warm washcloths and a squeeze of lemon in the palm to prepare us for our dining experience. Prior to our appetizers we were served warm, crusty bread tossed in a light garlic butter sauce with parmesan cheese. It was hard to stop at one piece, but I wanted to save room for all of the other delights to come. Our first appetizer was the Maine lobster tail, a beautiful collaboration of succulent, tender lobster adorned with spinach, cherry tomatoes and capers in a light white wine and garlic sauce. It was hard to imagine how they could top that after such a wonderful start, yet still they continued to impress. This scrumptious treat was followed by the rich Beggar’s Purse, a tender, sacchetti pasta dressed in a creamy, mouth-watering white truffle sauce with a sweet, delicious pear flavor. It was just the right amount of sweet that makes you feel as if you are getting away with eating dessert for dinner.

PGA VILLAGE – In the interests of full disclosure, author Jim Balzotti is a friend. I first met the PGA resident several years ago when he’d written a novel. Balzotti is the author of more than 20 travel guides and has appeared on “Good Morning America.” A few weeks ago, he called me about a new book, a departure from anything he’d written before. “The Wrath of God,” published by Christian publisher Creation House, is labeled as Fiction/ Christian/Suspense, but those words scarcely cover the complexity of a book that describes what happens in 2028 when China calls in its loans to the United States. We sat down for coffee one morning and he explained where the idea came from. “About 2 ½ years ago, I had a kernel of an idea,” Balzotti said. “I had a friend who had recently retired from the State Department, Christopher Webster. He was in the economic division and we went to Amherst together and
stayed in touch. We were catching up on a Sunday afternoon and I said that it was always in the news about what we owe China. I asked what would happen if China recalled the loan. “He said, in all seriousness, that he and others in the know lost sleep over this, that China is in a position to take down the United States economically without firing a shot. I was doubtful. This is the United States of America.” The scenario the two discussed revolved around a China that has a dictator with no counterbalance from other forces in the country. “If they had a dictator and the dictator hated the U.S. enough to wage economic war, they could take down the United States,” Balzotti said. China buys T-bills from the United States. If they dumped every one on the market and requested payment of the loans, we could not pay them.” That’s where Balzotti’s story begins. It is not where it ends. “’The Wrath of God’ has two distinct stories,” Balzotti said. “The second part intertwines the religious aspect and tells of the second Coming of Christ. It inter-

For our main course, we were presented with the New York strip Sinatra, a perfect culinary tribute to “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” As delicious as the appetizers were, they were simply a build-up to this divine creation. A tender, juicy steak encrusted in a crispy, gorgonzola cheese topping and drenched in a red cabernet wine reduction sauce was topped with yet more melted gorgonzola. This was simply to die for! I have never had a steak prepared quite this way, and I must say to enjoy this was the highlight of my evening. A traditional side dish to complement this lovely main course was a sautéed broccoli rabe tossed in a garlic olive oil sauce. Creamy garlic mashed potatoes that simply melted in my mouth was also a lovely companion to this wonderful meal. To end our meal, we were given a warm cappuccino topped with a light, fluffy whipped cream, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Accompanying this was the tiramisu, my personal favorite. It was not heavy in consistency or flavor, and I myself am very particular about this dessert. It was a perfect ending to our meal, not too heavy after the rich steak I had just enjoyed. After dinner, my party and I ventured out to the patio, where they were setting up to play live music. The restaurant has live music every Friday and Saturday night at 9 p.m. There is a bar outside with a lively, vibrant atmosphere and the crowd was energetic and talkative. ardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Carnival — all are Christian pre-Lenten festivals designed to raise a little hell before the 40 days of pious sacrifice leading to Easter. The festivals are enjoyed throughout the Western world, but especially in New Orleans and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. We’re now in the pious sacrifice Lenten period, or Lent. The season is meant to mirror the 40 days Jesus Christ spent in the wilderness without food or water, being tempted by Satan. Every year, Christians “give up” something for the Lenten period, whether it be meat or something they usually enjoy. Fat Tuesday, however, is all about the party. While on a South American cruise, we were fortunate to arrive in Brazil at the start of Carnival. In Rio, the Carnival is primarily a singing and dancing contest between competing “Samba Clubs.” The clubs are divided into two groups, A and B. The A group consists of winners from previous
years. The Bs are groups trying to win. Each club consists of a 6to 8-man band that dances and plays for their singer as they all parade down the street. The street is lined on both sides with bleachers, which are full of often raucous spectators. Of course, all are in distinctive, colorful costumes. One man was dressed up as a toilet, complete with a toilet hung by suspenders. After the parade of “clubs,” the night is filled with parties. In smaller cities and towns, the festivities are more family-oriented, just as noisy and raucous, but with many children accompanying parents dancing and parading in the streets. There are a lot of individual bands playing, some on stages, some just walking in the streets. There didn’t seem to be any competition between groups and no Samba clubs. Everyone was just doing their own thing. We visited Carnival in Recife, Brazil, and in nearby Olinda, Brazil. The parties go on every night

who lives in a small town in Maine, a place Balzotti knows well, goes with his village into the woods to defy the Chinese edict and worship freely. Lawrence, whose love Amy has been murdered, wants retribution and revenge. “The end of the book foretells the second Coming of Christ,” Balzotti said. “I’m making a religious statement and a political statement.” Christopher Webster, Jim’s long-time friend and retired State Department official, called me from Washington at my request to talk about the foreword he’d written for the book and about the scenario Balzotti sets out. He first made it clear that his foreword to the book and his comments to me were his own and did not represent the views of the State Department. “When I read a draft, I was really struck by the story and how gripping it was,” he said. “I couldn’t put it down. What I particularly liked was the command of detail and how he related the account to a fictional story.” Webster said that the book is clearly fiction and a futuristic account of one possible scenario. “It is not outside the realm of
possibility, but it’s not necessarily going to happen,” he said. “A lot has happened since 2012 and 2014 (when they first spoke). A lot of things Jim and I discussed haven’t happened. There was concern that the deficits would continue growing and China would become an economic powerhouse. Its share of the U.S. debt would grow. That hasn’t happened. China has economic difficulties. The U.S. deficits did come down after President Obama and Congress forged a compromise. “The scenario that gave rise to Jim’s book is not necessarily going to happen. The U.S. still had a large debt and China is the major holder, but I don’t think China has the inclination to cash in its holdings.” Webster said he wrote the foreword because he wanted to provide some real-world context. “I felt it would provide some interesting context for the readers about the inspiration to write the book and how events in one country can influence developments in another,” he said. “Developments in one country can have significant repercussions in another in unpredictable ways.” “The Wrath of God” by Jim Balzotti is available at Amazon. com on Kindle and in softcover and at Barnes & Noble Nook.

People rent cottages for the week in these small- to mid-size towns and raise enough hell to insure having confession material for the entire 40 days of Lent. Of course, if you visit Rio other than at Carnival, there is still plenty to see and do. Besides the beautiful hills — Sugarloaf and Corcovado — the beaches of Lebion, Arpoardor, Copacabana and Ipanema are clean and gorgeous. By the way, the “Girl from Ipanema” from the song is not so “tall and lithe and tan and lovely,” as she once was, but who is? The view of Rio from Corcovado, the hill with the huge statue of Christ without stretched arms, is magnificent. The city is divided into several sections by the hills, each with a distinctive ethnic character and all on display from Corcovado. For all its beauty and seeming wealth, Rio is apparently not that affluent. Overlooking the beautiful beaches are shanty, slum towns, called Favelas. They cling to the hills and spill down to the beach roads like lava pouring out of a volcano, which in time
