Port St. Thank you for your service Lucie will ‘Light It Up Blue’ Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

TRADITION — The St. Lucie County Fire District’s Station 17 at 10240 S.W. Village Parkway will be blue all April. Indeed, fire stations, other buildings, and signs throughout Port St. Lucie will be illuminated blue, too. But it started at Station 17 last year. It’s time again for Light It Up Blue. “It’s a community effort to bring autism awareness,” Pete Villasuso told the City Council at its last regular meeting, Monday, March 14. Villasuso is a county firefighter. Stations in Port St. Lucie are owned by the city, but staffed by the county. Villasuso’s son has autism spectrum disorder. Autism Speaks, a not-for-profit advocacy and research-funding organization, started the international Light It Up Blue campaign and accompanying fundraising walks in 2010. At Villasuso’s urging the council gave a nod to lighting up Station 17 blue in April last year. Villasuso was asking for all the city’s stations to be lit blue this April, but the City Council instead wanted bigger for autism awareness. During discussion, council awareness members brought up

ST. LUCIE WEST — Frank Wells was not a youth when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The 108-year-old entered the service in 1942. He was in his late 30s when he enlisted. “When I joined, I owned a newspaper,” Wells said. “I wasn’t drafted. I picked the Navy.” Wells is most likely the oldest veteran in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Foster Homes program, according to its national director. He lives in a medical foster home in St. Lucie West with his wife, Frances. The two have lost track of their anniversaries, but still look at each other with obvious adoration. “He doesn’t think, ‘old,’” Frances said. Wells joined the Navy, but ended up in a Marine Corps medical battalion. He spent three years island hopping in the South Pacific as America fought hard battle after hard battle to gain ground against the Japanese. “So many dang islands, I can’t name them,” Wells said. What Wells claims is that his

service was routine and ordinary. “I can’t say I was a great patriot,” he said. But— “I could tell some wild tales, but I’m not,” Wells added. The nine-year semi-professional football player said he didn’t feel a need to find glory in his service. He served for three years, and went home. “I was just glad to get out and go back to the newspaper,” he said. “I was successful at it. I loved the newspaper business.” While serving overseas, Wells didn’t write anything about his experiences for publication in the paper he owned. He wasn’t interested in writing anything about it when he got out either. Wells didn’t join any veterans organizations. He didn’t ride in parades. He was content to put his uniform away, and get back to his life. “I think I want to forget,” he said. But as the calendars came and went, age made it progressively harder for Frank and Frances to take care of themselves. Wells’ recently walked into a VA to ask for some help.

At 108 Frank Wells is most likely the oldest veteran in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Foster Home national program. The World War II veteran lives in St. Lucie West with his wife, Frances.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Port St. Lucie has a couple million federal dollars in the bank for helping folks get homes, but is hard pressed to spend it because of a litany of rules that no longer work in the real world. At least, not in Port St. Lucie’s real world where home sales dramatically improved the last few years. Pat Selmer, the community services director, hit on an idea — use those dollars to help veterans with service-connected catastrophic disabilities, such as paralysis, get homes. “We feel they deserve to have a payment-free house,” Selmer said. Selmer updated the City Council about progress on planning for a veterans housing program at a recent meeting. Council members expressed concerns about keeping the developing veterans housing initiative within guidelines attached to the federal dollars granted under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. But, council members are openly excited about helping veterans with service-connected disabilities. “Obviously we’re very committed to veterans,” Mayor Greg Oravec said at the meeting. “We’re a hometown for heroes.” Among other efforts to get more veterans and their families moving to Port St. Lucie in recent years, the city vigorously supported efforts to get the state to build its next veterans nursing home in Tradition. Work on that facility will likely start toward the end of this year. Selmer recently presented the nascent veterans-housing initiative, which is so far unnamed, to United Veterans of St. Lucie County. Dan DePagnier, chairman, said the city’s initial ideas are exciting, but there’s a lot more thinking to do. “We really have to get into the nuts and bolts,” DePagnier said. “You know as well as I do it takes organization, it takes people to make a successful (veterans-assistance) program.” Selmer said Port St. Lucie doesn’t have to create the wheel

on this project. Some are already rolling. “We looked at the program in Palm Bay and they called it Homes for Warriors,” Selmer said. That program, like the one Port St. Lucie is developing, started with leftover funds from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Palm Bay works with the Space Coast Paratroopers Association to find qualified applicants for rehabilitated and newly-constructed homes. For the Palm Bay program, applicants must have service-connected disabilities, with Purple Heart recipients preferred. The veterans must be honorably separated from the service and not have a current mortgage. The program is targeted to veterans of the Global War on Terrorism. The Homes for Warriors program has four projects underway. Recipients have disabilities such as debilitating traumatic brain injury. “Now (Homes for Warriors is) building houses, because (the city) had some lots,” Selmer said. “They’ve got the community involved and the community coming in.” Which would be the plan for Port St. Lucie, too. Selmer said in addition to working with United Veterans, the city has approached the St. Lucie County Veterans Services Office about it investigating applications when they come in. Under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program the city purchased foreclosed homes, rehabilitated them when needed, and sold them to qualified applicants. The buyers had to qualify for first mortgages, and the city did a second for down payment and closing costs. In all the city purchased and sold more than 200 homes under the program, and built 10. Now the city isn’t the only game in town, and has found itself unable to buy homes. “There’s still quite a few foreclosures,” Selmer said. “Some investors are buying them and they’re going like hotcakes.” Meaning the city is getting outbid. Selmer said that the veterans program would most likely

Road to destiny comes full circle in Tradition Aria Gmitter

ST. LUCIE WEST — For writer, artist, pilot trainer and Army veteran Erik Feldmanis, the road to destiny started with a choice. Feldmanis moved from West Palm Beach to St. Lucie County with his wife, Agnese, in September of last year. One of those choices was to call Tradition home. Feldmanis, of Latvian descent whose second language is English, Tradition’s small-town feeling is the ideal — affordable Florida living, friendly people, less traffic and a centralized location. The road to destiny, for Feldmanis, has wound up in Tradi-

tion, but it began with military service. Raised in New Carlisle, a small town in Ohio, Feldmanis decided to join the Army in 1979 rather than attend college after high school. Serving active duty from 1979 to 1987 with the Army, he remained enlisted with the National Guard and the Army Reserves in a branch called the Individual Readiness Reserve (IRR) from 1988 to 2007, where his aviation career first started and then later took flight — literally. “I started (out) enlisted, as a private E1 as a helicopter mechanic,” says Feldmanis, “then applied for flight school, and was accepted into the flight school program in 1981, and graduated

activities here, and I speak to many residents. I can assure you that the vast majority are more than pleased with the total environment. Are there incidents when some agendas do not meet everyone’s satisfaction? Of course there are. As the old saying goes, “you cannot please all of the people all of the time.” There have been couple of reports, published to the community, comparing Cascades to other similar communities throughout Florida, both in cost of living and quality of amenities. Reviewing these reports shows that the Cascades community ranks among the best. The board members, both past and present, are very competent, hard-working and diligent. In order to justify the article you should visit Cascades, see our impressive clubhouse and beautiful ballroom, visit our state-of-the-art tennis courts, and interview the resident(s).

Your opinion will change for the better. As for Mr. Pritchard and Mr. Knoll, I believe I have the ideal answer to their “woes.” Move to another community that will satisfy them, if there is such a place. In the meantime, please do not diss or try to change something that the overwhelming majority are in love with. Sincerely, Andrew J. Gavaletz Editor’s note: The original article was from our March 18 edition. Bruno Moore, a Your Voice News & Views reporter, left a message with Gavaletz and previously spoke to the Cascades Homeowners Association president for comments on each side of the issue. Kozac added, “There are so many people in the community (affected by autism); there’s so much support. That’s one of the things that has been impressed upon me.” The walk’s local organizers’ aim is to raise more than $30,000 for Autism Speaks. At press time, the walk has raised nearly $7,000 through online registrations and donations. Autism spectrum disorder is a grouping of neuro-developmental conditions that feature impairments to social interaction, communication, and executive functions — such as planning on paying bills. Most autistics have sensory sensitivities such as hyperacusis, sound intolerance. Autistic individuals have a wide range of apparent functional capacity, from extremely low to extremely high. For example, Nobel Prize winning economist Vernon Smith is a self-diagnosed autistic.

DESTINY from page A6 in 1982.” Writing has often been Feldmanis’ copilot, and he began penning for Aviation Digest while serving in the military. He currently submits niche-specific topics, with the most recent publication in AirBeat Magazine, which is specific to law enforcement. Transitioning to civilian life, after a military year was a challenge. Again, knowing how to use the power of choice was the road to success for Feldmanis, and the people he met along life’s highway. “I stuck with things I knew,” he says. What he knew was how to fly. Another Army veteran helped him to find his first civilian job working at an airport. “I had a major that I worked with who retired and went to work for FPL as a 6 Base Operator handling nonairline airplanes and went to work with him,” he says. At that job, Feldmanis flew off shore in the Gulf of Mexico to support oil rigs. At FPL, he learned about a unique opportunity with American Trans Air. The CEO happened to also be Latvian. Feldmanis wrote him a letter, and later moved to Indianapolis to work for the company. “Transitioning and sticking with things I knew made change easier,” Feldmanis says. As a writer, Feldmanis writes on topics that relate to his life and career experiences. His first book, “The Jungle,” which developed into a three-part book series to include “Freedom of Choice” and “The Lost But Not Forgotten,” center around action and adventure involving aviation, law enforcement and survival. His work garnered attention from other veterans, and has been endorsed by former Air Force Gen. Chuck Yeager, World War II Triple Ace Col. Bud Anderson and Prelude Pictures. But there’s a different artistic side to Feldmanis that has developed over the past four years

that might surprise people. He paints. Without any prior experience or art training, Feldmanis just decided it was something he wanted to do. His paintings, made from oil on canvas, include his latest project entitled “The Road,” paintings described as “colorful,” “scenic,” “serene.” When asked why he chose to paint themes separate from his career experiences, he replied, “All of Florida impacts my art. I want to paint something positive.” Feldmanis’ paintings have been on display in art galleries, and he has used his art to support charities worldwide. He donated one Florida-inspired piece in shades of pink to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and organizations that care for animals. His wife, Agnese, shares his passion for animals. Together, they provide financial support for animals each year. A percentage of Feldmanis’ art sales help fund organizations that provide support for both humans and animals. “Animals can’t tell you what they need. Sometimes their need is greater,” he says. Last year, Feldmanis and his wife donated to a humane society in Latvia. This year, they intend to continue to provide support with hopes to extend their reach to more organizations that help with animal rights. “In life, we are our own destiny,” he says. “Some people believe things happen for a reason, but a lot of times, we decide our own future.” So, “The Road” series depicts where you’re at right now, in Feldmanis’ view. It doesn’t matter where you came from or where you are going, but live for now. For Feldmanis, the “now,” and the road, has wound up in Tradition, and he’s there to stay for a long — and compassionate, and creative — time to come. BLUE from page A7 in getting diagnoses that gives them explanations and starting places for therapies, Villasuso felt shame. “I remember being frightened,” he said. “I felt like a failure as a father.” Because of getting his son vaccinations. There was a pervasive belief that vaccinations played a significant role in causing autism. It’s an idea rooted in a 1998 paper discussing eight children whose first symptoms of autism appeared within weeks after receiving the MMR vaccine. At the time it was

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • MARCH 25, 2016• A9 published many researchers were critical of the report, noting that the lead author’s, Dr. Andrew Wekefield’s, postulations about a possible link between vaccinations and autism were flawed. But the criticism wasn’t what made press. What made press was the notion that vaccinations had previously unknown health risks. In the last 18 years numerous largescale studies have failed to turn up evidence for the hypothesized link between vaccines and autism. Nevertheless, many still believe it exists. But Villasuso didn’t know that the proposed link was debunked — until he started reading up

on autism. What he found was that autistic individuals were at greater risk from cops and first-responders than vaccinations. Autistic individuals often have reactions to social situations different from norms; they often seem distant. “The police, when someone is acting indifferent, cops think this guy is on drugs, or they get offended, and pretty soon the guy is lying on the ground or getting tased,” Villasuso said. “Next thing you know they’re in jail.” Villasuso got in touch with a Port St. Lucie autism instructor Dennis Debbaudt, owner of Autism Risk & Safety Management.

Villasuso said Debbaudt has trained St. Lucie County and Port St. Lucie first responders to train others. “He gave it to us to give to our firefighters for free,” Villasuso said. Now Villasuso is no longer feeling like a failure of a father. “I’m a proud father of an autistic son,” he said. “He’s come a long way, because of therapy.” The walk is a fundraiser, and is about a mile. Villasuso said no one will be turned away from the walk over donations. For more about or to register for the walk, visit www.walknowforautismspeaks.org.

Peripheral Neuropathy: A Deadly Condition? If You’re Suffering With Peripheral Neuropathy This Might Be The Most Important Thing You Read All Year you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article).

We even see individuals whose neuropathy is so far advanced they are at risk of having their feet amputated. However, none of these are the reason neuropathy can be a deadly condition. The biggest risks from peripheral neuropathy are the balance problems and falls that this condition can cause.

Figure 1: Falls affect millions of seniors in the U.S. every year

You see, the nerves in your feet help send signals to your brain to maintain proper balance. When the nerves are damaged by neuropathy it is common to feel like you are off balance, or going to fall. Many of you reading this may have already fallen, and live in fear that your next fall may result in a fracture or concussion. Sadly, over 2.4 million seniors visit the emergency room each year due to falls, and nearly 23,000 die.

Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate.

This damage that results in balance problems is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems as well as, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. To make matters worse, too many doctors simply prescribe medications which don’t fix the cause of the problem. Even worse, some of these drugs have side effects that include dizziness and loss of balance! There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How much nerve damage has been sustained? NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require? The NASA developed treatment we use in our office is like watering a plant. This technology will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will do a Neuropathy Severity Examination for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Dr. Silva will be offering this Neuropathy Severity Examination to the first 12 callers who respond to this publication. After the first 12 callers, we will continue to schedule evaluations at the normal examination fee of $300. So don’t hesitate to act now! Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated and your balance restored. “He had never stepped foot in a VA,” Emily Flowers-Yahn, the foster-home coordinator for St. Lucie County, said. “I got him enrolled for placement here.” Wells became one of about 3,550 veterans annually who find care in the medical foster homes. While in the homes, veterans are in the VA’s Home Based Primary Care program. The medical foster homes are private, residential houses with VA-trained caregivers who help with daily activities, such as bathing and dressing. The caregivers must commit to having plans for ensuring the veterans get basic care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 52 veterans and two spouses in foster homes in the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center’s area, which includes Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. Nationally, the program started in 2010. Locally it started in 2012. Flowers-Yahn said the West Palm program has served 160 veterans so far.

“Most of the veterans are World War II,” she said. “We have some Vietnam era.” However, age isn’t a deciding criteria. Any veteran who needs assistance with basic tasks for daily living can qualify. The veterans pay about $2,000 a month or more to stay in the private homes. Flowers-Yahn said most qualify for a package of VA and other federal benefits, which cover the costs. “We never like to turn any veteran away because of money,” she said Flowers-Yahn said there’s a list of folks who’d like to become medical foster homes. About two to five open annually in the West Palm VA Medical Center’s area. She urges anyone interested in becoming a foster caregiver to call her office at (561) 422-1239. Veterans can call Flowers-Yahn at her mobile phone, (561) 3523855. When the 108-year-old man was asked what the secret to long life is. He’s not sure. “Only thing I can say is, I was an athlete all my life,” Wells said. “I worked out every day.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — Betty Brown says she was turning down invitations, retreating from life, and becoming reclusive because she couldn’t hear. The 87 year-old Port St. Lucie widow had always been outgoing, social, and an active participant in family and social functions, but all that changed when she couldn’t participate in simple conversations with friends because she couldn’t hear. Brown had used hearing aids relatively effectively in the past, and she looked into getting hers fixed, but it would have been prohibitively expensive. “I would have had to choose between hearing and being able to eat,” says Brown, remembering. Fortunately, a health care provid-

er mentioned the Starkey Hearing Foundation’s ‘So the World May Hear’ program to provide free, high-quality hearing aids to people in need. That’s when she met Joe Mutter and Tammy Carpenter from Mutter’s Hearing Center in St. Lucie West. Joe participates with the ‘So the World May Hear’ mission trips and Betty was referred to him by the Foundation. “Joe listened to me, asked me lots of questions, and tested me right in his office,” said Brown. “I felt so comfortable, and they explained everything so I understood completely. Honestly, from the moment I spoke with Tammy and Joe the first time, I knew I was in good hands with these people. I felt like I was being welcomed into a very caring family.” Every year through the Starkey

The Starkey Foundation has been providing the gift of hearing for over 30 years, and more than 1.8 million people have been recipients. Mutter will continue to provide free ongoing care and maintenance for Brown in the months and years to come with regular checkups, cleanings, and adjustments as needed. Life is grand.” Mutter’s Precision Hearing Center is located at 1420 SW St Lucie W Blvd, Port St Lucie. For more information call (772) 871-1222 or visit their Facebook page Mutter’s Pre-

Selmer said the city is waiting on information from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development about staying on the safe side of grant requirements. She said the earliest the city can roll out the program — whatever it’s named — is probably July. “It’s our top priority with housing in Port St. Lucie,” she said, “We don’t want to fail at it.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A St. Lucie County undercover operation throughout the weekend showed that 16 percent of stores failed to comply with state law prohibiting the sale of alcohol to those under 21 and 25 percent of stores failed to comply with state law prohibiting the sale of tobacco and liquid nicotine to those under 18, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara. According to Sheriff Mascara, 55 attempts to purchase alcohol resulted in nine locations selling to children as young as 15 years old. The overall non-compliance rate for alcohol sales (restaurants, bars, convenience, grocery and liquor stores) for this operation was 16 percent. Targeting tobacco sellers and Vapor shops that sell liquid nicotine, 24 attempts to purchase resulted in six locations selling to children. The overall non-compliance rate for tobacco/e-liquid sales for this operation was 25 percent. School Resource Deputies carefully supervised under-age St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Explorer volunteers who tested store clerks by trying to purchase the prohibited products without being ordered to show proof that they were above the legal age, Sheriff Mascara said. According to the Sheriff, the operation targeted convenience stores, vapor shops, gas stations, drug stores, bars and restaurants that sell alcohol, liquid nicotine (e-juice) and synthetic drugs. “There is no doubt that these nicotine-delivery devices and liquid nicotine products are deliberately marketed to young people,” Sheriff Mascara said. “They are sold in flavors that target youngsters in flavors such as ‘banana split,’ ‘cotton candy, ‘kool-aid,’ ‘gummy bears’ and ‘skittles’ or with names found in popular cartoon charac-

ters.” Here are the facts about the harmful effects of tobacco, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death. Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including an estimated 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. If smoking persists at the current rate among youth in this country, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 years of age are projected to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. This represents about one in every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger who are alive today. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year on cigarette advertising and promotions. In 2012, $9.6 billion was spent on tobacco advertising. Almost $26 million was spent every day in 2012. Tobacco use costs the United States billions of dollars each year. More than $289 billion in costs every year includes at least $133 billion in direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion in lost productivity. There is also the cost of $5.6 billion a year (2006 data) in lost productivity from exposure to secondhand smoke. More information is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/ tobacco/data_statistics/fact_ sheets/.

RIVERLAND from page A1 ing build-out. Now that Port St. Lucie’s manifest destiny is in full bloom, no less than nine DRIs are listed in the city’s comprehensive plan. Many of them, including Tradition, may not be finished for another 20 years or more. Developed on 3,845 acres, Riverland will be the largest megadevelopment after St. Lucie West to be built in the Western Annexation Area (WAA). It will comprise 11,700 homes (more than any other local DRI), almost 900,000 square feet of retail, and about 3 million square feet of office, light industrial, and institutional edifices, including two schools. When the Riverland development was initially submitted in 2005, the applicant projected a deadline of 2025. After a transition of ownership, two Notices of Proposed Change (NOPC), and several roadblocks, the current expectation date is 2034. Projects of this scope have to pass through many hoops of fire before being able even to break ground, says Tobin. They must be approved by rigorous state, regional, city and transportation compliance criteria. Several of these DRI applications undergo a series of amendments as well, which have to be individually evaluated. Once a DRI’s concep-

Only then, can the developer look at site plans and platting. A further impeding factor for Riverland was a 2004 annexation agreement that lumped all of the DRIs in the area under one traffic study. In the roaring aughts before the crash, when the building industry was a teeming horn of plenty, developers for Riverland/ Kennedy, Wilson Groves, Western Grove and Southern Grove willingly entered with the city into the Southwest Annexation Agreement (SAA), which brought their individual applications under one cyclopean development order and a joint traffic study known as the Western Annexation Traffic Study (WATS). This entailed that construction of shared resources such as roadways was to be completed collaboratively in phases. “It acknowledged that multiple parties would be applying for a variety of development applications,” says Daniel Holbrook, Assistant City Manager and former Director of Planning and Zoning. “The framework was to ensure that essential services were considered prior to the annexation, so we weren’t surprised later on

non-residential, and private civic organizations.” Holbrook says that as with all DRIs there was a rigorous process that allowed all affected parties to come to the table before the projects were OK’d. In 2007, GL Homes, the current developer of Riverland, sought their first NOPC. Their second was finally approved in January 2015, after three years of being tabled by the council. Beginning in 2008, Wilson and Southern Groves filed their own NOPCs, calling for separate traffic studies, essentially unshackling their development orders from the WATS. While the teasing out of individual interests became known around town as “the divorce” of the DRIs, Glenn Ryals, the applicant with GLHomes, claims that there was nothing bitter about the separation. “Initially all of the DRIs had a shared road obligation, and that’s a real hard thing to work out among four different parties,” says Ryals. “So, we ended up all deciding to take individual responsibility for certain roads that would allow each of us to build our projects. Divorce sounds adversarial, but actually we were all in agreement that we each would like to have our own responsibilities, because that way we knew what our obligations were, and we didn’t have to rely on three other parties.” The city has attempted to keep up with the fragmentation by amending the original annexation agreement six times. In Jan. 2015, Riverland’s NOPC 2 barely eked by with a divided four-member council. Mayor Greg Oravec, who voted against the change, said that he felt the only way to hold the developments to their responsibilities was to try and preserve the initial agreement. At this point, whether the agreement still serves as a guiding light for the developments or as an inert shadow hanging behind them is an important question for the city. Along with the recent submittal of the conceptual master plan, GL Homes included information for rezoning their first parcel. They are seeking MPUD zoning for a 398-acre parcel which will support 1,100 dwelling units, a neighborhood commercial tract, and the first phase of an internal path intended for bike, pedestrian, and cart travel. According to Planning and Zoning’s regular schedule, the rezoning will be brought before the council by March 28. GL Homes, which has been active in South Florida for 40 years, is one of the largest builders in the Sunshine State.

“...Once you start seeing more rooftops, you’ll start seeing old ideas like the mall come back to life. That itself will drive more homes, because now the market has credibility. The time has come for it. The prices down south are too high. The land is available and the entitlements are there. I think everybody is going to benefit from our efforts and the others.” Glenn Ryals Professional Builder Magazine recently ranked them 23rd nationally, and Builder Magazine included them in their top 20 list for Florida builders, in terms of closings. Their developments offer a range of lifestyle options, from 55 plus communities like Valencia Cove in Boynton to luxury single-family home developments such as the brand-new Stonecreek community in Naples. There is much buzzing in the WAA. Within the next month, Planning and Zoning plans to meet with WCI who have expressed an interest in building on Western Grove, west of Tradition. Southern Grove, which has been a Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) since 2012, has already drawn the likes of Torrey Pines, Tradition Medical Center, which is all set for their second phase of construction, an impending Keiser University, and VGTI, which defaulted and closed shop last October. Before the housing bubble burst, there was talk of a regional mall going into the area. Ryals says that he sees that as a renewed possibility once the building in the area regains momentum. “I’m incredibly optimistic about Port St. Lucie,” Ryals says. “It’s going to take a little bit of momentum, though. I believe if you take two or three large builders like ourselves and WCI, along with existing builders like Kolter, AV Homes, and DiVosta, you’re going to have a major draw to the area. Once you start seeing more rooftops, you’ll start seeing old ideas like the mall come back to life. That itself will drive more homes, because now the market has credibility. The time has come for it. The prices down south are too high. The land is available and the entitlements are there. I think everybody is going to benefit from our efforts and the others.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — As we welcome the 2015 National League Champs back to their spring training home, the City of Port St. Lucie also welcomes all the traffic they bring with them. New York Mets spring training games are in full swing at Tradition Field and you may have noticed some changes at the surrounding intersections. Port St. Lucie Public Works and the Port St. Lucie Police Department began coordinating with Mets staff in 2015 to discuss a plan for limiting traffic issues around the stadium in a safe and efficient manner. During games, Port St. Lucie Police Officers will be assigned to several key intersections to assist in maintaining the flow of traffic. The following intersections with traffic signals will be in flashing mode during spring training

games: • I-95 Southbound on ramp • Peacock Blvd. and University Blvd. • Courtyard Cir. and Peacock Blvd. • California Blvd. and University Blvd. Officers will place the signals in flash mode approximately two hours before the start of each game, and then again for approximately one to one and a half hours after the completion of each game. Officers remain onsite the entire time the signals are in flash mode. Most games start at 1:10 p.m., so unless you’re attending, you may want to seek an alternate route if you need to travel around the Tradition Field area of St. Lucie West at that time. If you cannot avoid this area, please use caution when traveling through the flashing intersections. If you are attending a game, again please use caution, and “Go Mets!”

New eco-community lightens carbon footprint FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A unique community, ECOVillage, is being built and going green. Not only are they zero energy and completely solar, but the homes are engineered “healthy” in terms of the toxicity. The ground-breaking ceremony to start the first phase of construction is on April 1, 9 a.m., at 1000 N.E. Whistling Way, Port St. Lucie, in the River Place Community. Phase 1 consists of a total of 30 villas with both 1-story and 2-story floor plans. The townhomes are surrounded by wildlife habitats and close to the Oxbow Eco-Center. ECOVillage itself consists of 118 Net Zero Energy townhomes that start at $169,900. The homes are built with solar power, which produces more energy than the home consumes. “A zero-energy home will produce as much, or more, electricity than it consumes in a course of a year,” according to the company’s website. The appliances are GE Energy Star with a hybrid water heater, washer and dryer. The paint is considered Zero VOC, or volatile organic compounds, which relates to the level of toxins released. The homes are also being called “smart” homes. “We include in the base package:

the ‘brain’ from Clare Controls, which has connectivity up to 150 devices, programmable thermostat, two light zones and garage door opener connector; all items are run through one app and can be controlled by you anywhere in the world you have an internet connection. Optional packages can include more light zones, video surveillance, security system, door locks, window shades and more. User scenes can be set up to help control energy and for lifestyle use; such as an Arrival Scene where, with one click on the app, the garage door opens, doors unlock and lights come on,” according to Jeff Alexander of Homecrete Homes. Homecrete Homes is teaming up with Greenergy Communities to construct the townhomes. Homecrete Homes builds homes throughout the Treasure Coast. To learn more, visit www.homecretehomes.com and www.planetgreenergy.com. Homecrete Homes and Greenergy Communities’ new homes are being presented by Greenergy Realty Treasure Coast (772) 9054406. The homes are scheduled to be built in phases as more and more reservations are compiled. Phase one breaks ground on April 1, and following the ceremony prizes will be drawn and refreshments served at the River Place Clubhouse. For more information visit www.ecovillageriverplace.com.

TREASURE COAST — The Lyric Theatre and BlueBird Productions is pleased to announce that Grammy-winning Latin jazz musician Robert Navarro will be conducting a masterclass with music students at Lincoln Park Academy on March 28th. Lincoln Park Academy Band Director, Jason Albert says of Robert Navarro “He is truly a master musician and educator. The Lincoln Park Academy Jazz Ensemble wishes thank Mr. Navarro for his support in continuing jazz education and for his role in the success of our ensemble.” Mr. Navarro’s focus will be on the different claves (Latin rhythms) that are used when playing Latin jazz. He will elaborate on Latin jazz improvisation: What is the difference when improvising Latin jazz compare to other styles of jazz? What is the band responsibility when a member is improvising? How do we use minor percussion and their function? Mr. Navarro will speak about the different phrases and syncopation used when playing this music. One more important topic is the piano “montuno” which brings that exciting Latin flavor to the arrangement

and how the bass player locks everything together. Accompanying Mr. Navarro, will be acclaimed Latin percussionist, Hector Pineda. Robert Navarro is an accomplished New York City performer with more than 25 years of experience as a professional pianist, teacher, arranger and producer. Navarro also was recognized by the Treasure Coast International Film Festival for the musical arrangement of the song “City Within a Dream” for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. The Lyric Theatre has partnered with BlueBird Productions to present Mr. Navarro as part of The Lyric Theatre’s Arts & Education Program. Instituted in 2010, The Lyric’s Masterclass and Artist Residency Program brings professional artists into our schools for an intensive, up-close and personal exchange with students. BlueBird’s founder, Darryl Bey says “It is, in part, the mission of BlueBird Productions to provide the opportunity for music students to be exposed to professional musicians. This exposure helps to elevate the level of understanding of musicianship as well as their performance abilities.” Masterclass opportunities en-

hance The Lyric’s mission to support emerging and established area artists. Participants are able to interact with distinguished artists in a focused workshop setting and hone their craft through the feedback and invaluable experience of their mentors. This unique experience allows dedicated artist mentors to kindle even the smallest spark of creativity in a child that might otherwise go unnoticed. “Masterclasses are so vitally important for personal and artistic growth. Students are able to demonstrate their own approach and uniqueness of their craft but more importantly equips them with practical and essential life skills,” says Kia Fontaine, The Lyric Theatre Executive Director. “We are blessed to have gifted and passionate mentors like Mr. Navarro in our backyard. I am thrilled that The Lyric is able to bring these artists to area schools to share their wealth of knowledge and experience with local students,” Karin Leone, The Lyric’s Director of Education. For information about any of The Lyric’s Arts & Education Programs, please contact Karin Leone, Director of Education at 772-220-1942, ext. 205 or Karin@LyricTheatre.com.

Play examines questions of faith Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST – Imagine a meeting between two intellectual titans of the 20th century, Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. One, Lewis, is just beginning to make a name for himself as an author; the other, Freud, is dying of cancer. Playwright Mark St. Germain imagined such a meeting in his play, “Freud’s Last Session.” Set at the beginning of World War II, the two protagonists discuss life and faith and relive their own war experiences, Lewis as a soldier and Freud as a refugee escaping from Austria. “Freud’s Last Session” will be presented on the Waxlax Stage at the Riverside Theatre March 22-April 3. David Schmittou, a Riverside favorite, plays Lewis to Steve Brady’s Freud, and spoke recently about this two-person play. “It’s a challenge,” he said. “We’re both playing real people and we have to get the facts right. It leaves us less wiggle room. We have historical evidence and there is some responsibility to be true to these characters, to whom they were historically and factually. It’s also (a challenge) keeping up with Steve Brady, who’s a mighty fine actor. The play is so well-written that it’s a marvelous opportunity.” Schmittou has learned a great deal about the man he portrays. “He was a young don at Oxford,” he said. “C.S. Lewis had written, but he had not yet achieved fame. (His writings) are how Freud

found Lewis. They appreciated each other’s writings and thought processes.” Freud has invited Lewis to visit him in London, where he has taken refuge from the Nazis, “Lewis had famously embraced Christianity, but he called himself a ‘most reluctant convert’ who was dragged kicking and screaming (back to the church,)” Schmittou said. “He’s a fascinating man, with his conversion from a non-believer to be one of the great Christian apologists. There was such commitment, fervor and belief. “Atheists (like Freud) feel just as strongly that there is no God and they had very civilized, intelligent, passionate debates. Faith was an important issue they felt strongly about.” The play starts with Lewis arriving late for their meeting. He apologizes for running late and offers to postpone the meeting “It’s the last time Freud will have this debate,” Schmittou said. “It’s so close to the end and the cancer is advanced. He said, ‘Do you always count on having tomorrow? I do not?’ He’s older, ill and bombs are falling.” Schmittou said he has seen the play several times and it is interesting to observe the audience.

“It’s obvious people who would have argued on the side of Lewis act as if they believe the playwright believed (in God), Others believe he stood with Freud. It’s so wonderful to bump the two viewpoints and leave it in a balanced way. It’s like listening to a good debate. If people are open-minded, they won’t be able to tell what the author’s beliefs are. He didn’t try to color it or manipulate it to have one win. There were interesting arguments on both sides.” Schmittou is expecting a slightly less hectic time at the Riverside this season. Last season he appeared in “West Side Story” on one stage and “Side by Side by Sondheim” on the other. He was, he said, literally performing side by side. “This is a great opportunity,” he said, “The play is written in an intelligent, respectful way that can inform and touch a lot of people. The play made me think and I’m glad I have the chance to live in their world for a while.” The Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Park Dr., Vero Beach, presents “Freud’s Last Session” by Mark St. Germain on the Waxlax Stage March 22-April 3. Tickets are $45 for adults and $22.50 for students under 17. Call the box office at (772) 2316990 or order online at ww.riversidetheatre.com.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — All this year — especially this month — Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society is celebrating its 20th birthday. Imagine that! The group has been providing fantastic music performed by great musicians and helping to spread the music throughout the Treasure Coast. In addition to its usual Tuesday Night Jazz Jams at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce and twice-monthly Wednesday Evening Jazz Jams at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society is long-known for the incredible talent and variety it brings each year to its annual Jazz Week celebration. And since this is such a special birthday, they’d like to make this year’s Jazz Week festivities better than ever. Jazz Week starts officially on Easter Sunday, March 27, with Waterside Blues — a free party down by the river on Melody Lane featuring two fantastic groups. You bring the lawn chair and your sunglasses, and FPJBS will kick off the festivities with the Society Performing Ensemble at 1 p.m. sharp. At 3 p.m., the crowds will part, and the phenomenal Otis Cadillac and the El Dorado’s, featuring the Sublime Seville Sisters will take the stage, and you might just forget you brought

lawn chairs at all because they’ll have you on their feet dancing, swaying, and screaming for joy as they help us celebrate twenty years of great music and scholarships in St. Lucie County. And yes, it’s absolutely free! On Monday, March 28, Dave Scott and the Reckless Shots will bring their own Southern Blues Rock style to the stage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a free brown bag concert by the Indian River at Melody Lane. Scott, the musical wizard who played with the late, great David Shelley, who loved coming to Fort Pierce for Jazz Week every year, will bring some fantastic new tunes and loads of love and energy to the stage for the first of the Jazz Week Free Weekday Concerts. And yes, they’re still celebrating the Society’s 20th birthday, so save room for cake! Tuesday, March 29, it’s The Coffee Beans, percolating up some great classic tunage that you simply won’t want to miss. Bring your lunch and a lawn chair if you’d like, or stop by any of the wonderful downtown Fort Pierce restaurants for lunch to go, and enjoy music, sunshine, and of course — more birthday cake! Wednesday, March 30, it’s powerful local talent from the Jazz Society’s own Society Performing Ensemble, featuring trumpeter extraordinaire Steve Ahern and lightning-fingered guitarist,

FOXY from page B3 prefers this Ludwig play to the better-known “Lend Me A Tenor.” “I think it’s better,” he said. “It moves faster and the characters are better drawn and developed. It’s sillier in a good way. At rehearsal, you feel good watching.” The action takes place at the Quail Valley Country Club and while golf is part of the plot, it’s not a play about golf. “The occasion is a golf tournament, but it’s not a satire on golf, “Moberg said. “It doesn’t poke fun at golf. It’s a tournament between two rival golf clubs at the end of a long season.” The fox in the title turns out to be the girls, who are “foxy” and the rival clubs, who keep getting “out-foxed.” The cast includes familiar names in what Moberg calls “Team Farce,” those students who are experienced in the not-always-easy job of getting the timing right. That ensures that the play is as funny as it is meant to be. The veteran cast includes Brendan Wenger, Lindsey Grace, Austin Peer, Kelly Fischer, James King and Maris Quijano. “They’re experienced and bring so much,” Moberg said. They’ve all done different kinds of farces, including British farces, that are longer and more complicated and

American farce lets the actors bring more and doing a farce is the best training for doing them.” Moberg is delighted to be doing this play at the end of a season that has included the technically difficult shows “Frankenstein” and “Peter Pan.” “To land on this script at nearly the end of the season is wonderful,” he said. “I still look forward to going to rehearsal and laughing at things.” For the summer season, Moberg has on tap the play “Play On!” by Rick Abbott. It will be presented May 4 and is a comedy about a theater group trying to stage a play with constant interference from the author, who keeps revising the script. Moberg also gave a teaser for next season. “We’re looking at ‘Man of La Mancha,’” he said. “We’re starting to have meetings.” Indian River State College drama students present the Ken Ludwig farce, “Fox on the Fairway” March 31, April 1-2 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. BIRTHDAY from page B5

And finally, hold on to your hats as Brazilian Jazz masters Phil Fest treat you on yet a third stage with sounds of yesterday and today, smokin’ hot Brazilian jazz, and more rhythm than should be legally allowed. Oh – and yes, there will be birthday cake. Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society will round out its 20th birthday week celebration on Friday, April Fool’s Day, with one final free concert that Bestor says you’ll simply be a fool to miss. Sound of Vision puts the FUN in funk and positively enraptures crowds with smooth jazz, fusion, Latin funk, and so much more. In the evening, Don Bestor, son of the famed orchestra leader with whom he shares his name, will perform his first-ever acoustic concert at the Black Box with an evening of music and famous friends from the entertainment business. It’s an evening not to be missed, and as a passionate supporter of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society, Bestor will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the event to both the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society and the Sunrise Theatre, which is celebrating its tenth birthday this year. Free daily concerts, a special evening of dancing, an opportunity to hear live, local, professional

James McCreavy. Said FPJBS President Don Bestor, “If you’re looking at this schedule and thinking about calling in sick at work all week, so you won’t miss out on the fun and cake, don’t worry — we have arranged for music several nights too, just to keep you from having to ditch work to enjoy the fun and celebration.” On Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., you can dance your way down Second Street with FDO, the 17-piece Big Swingin’ Band that specializes in music For Dancers Only. Thursday, March 31, at 11 a.m., the Fort Pierce Jazz Ensemble will take the stage for another super, free lunchtime concert, this one featuring the vocal stylings of Cyndi Rapp and the guitar magic of Dave Veator. According to Bestor, “Thursday evening, as soon as the sun goes down, we’ll blow downtown out of the water with three, count ‘em, three stages in one night. One stage will feature a school jazz band from somewhere on the Treasure Coast (and you will be amazed by the level of talent). Another stage will feature the DeCosa Brothers Trio, a Vero Beach Native Americana rock cover trio playing great classic rock hits from the 1960’s and ‘70s.

“We got everything we needed to keep caring fo‰ Dad at home.”

Serving all, regardless of ability to pay.

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”
