During the City Council’s winter retreat — a strategic planning session that was March 3 and 4 — the assistant director of parks and recreation pitched a plan to turn about 25 acres at McCarty Ranch into campground. He said it could be a profitable venture. “All indicators are camping is here to stay,” Brad Keen told the council at the meeting. Council member Michelle Berger said it’s time for the city to pitch its tent and stop meandering about creating a campground. “I’m pretty sure this is the fourth time the council has talked about

ST. LUCIE WEST — A beautiful morning belied why about 100 gathered at the Port St. Lucie City Hall’s porch on March 2. The
145 crisp white flags with royal blue ribbons lining the finely-cut lawn represented the most jarring reality of modern life in a nation with high regard for family and the rule of law. Some Florida’s children die at the hands of their parents, guard-
ians and caregivers. Others live through abuse and neglect, some narrowly, with lifelong scars, physical and psychological. Last year, 145 Florida children died because of abuse and neglect. Each of the flags was dedicated to one of those children.

TRADITION – Teacher Glenna Sigmon has roots deep in St. Lucie County. She is a member of the Carlton family, who came to the Fort Pierce area in the late 1800s. They were involved in cattle and citrus and an ancestor was the first school teacher in St. Lucie County. Sigmon is a first grade teacher at Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition and she is one of 40 educators from throughout Florida who have been selected to participate in the Florida Teacher Leadership Program. She will participate in several leadership institutes, regional meetings and virtual sessions throughout the year. The program is sponsored by the University of Florida Lastinger Center for Learning and the Center for Teaching Quality, This is not the first honor for Sigmon, who has been teaching first grade at Palm Pointe for six years. She is a team leader for first grade and was a 2015 winner of the national Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Game-Changer Award
for charter schools. The road to the latest award began last year on the district level, when she was nominated by school administrators to meet with other educators from the school district. “I’ve enjoyed being included and meetGlenna Sigmon ing and collaborating with other teachers,” she said. “It’s a way to help professional development on a more personal level, learning new techniques. It’s more collegial and less, ‘I’m the boss.’ The group is comprised of people eager to learn new things and willing to share them.” Sigmon learned about the leadership award from the state Department of Education’s website. “I read the criteria and it was for educators who are lifelong learners and like to collaborate. I thought, ‘That’s me.”
Sigmon filled out the application and submitted the essays. More than 200 applicants applied and 83 applicants had FaceTime interviews. Sigmon loves teaching first grade. “There is an amazing amount of growth in a first grade student physically and mentally,” she said. “They come in smaller, just used to being in school and by the end of the year, they’re independent. It’s amazing what they’re able to do. People underestimate what 6- and 7-year-old brains can do if you give them the opportunity. “They’re enthusiastic and they love you, love school, love their friends. We have preconceived notions and we have to consider everyone able to do (things.) Expectations should be high for everyone. Everyone has something valuable to bring to the table.” The leadership institutes will focus on improving the quality of standards-based classroom teaching, documenting the impact of professional learning on teacher and student growth and promoting teacher leadership within and across school districts. Sigmon is
looking forward to the first meeting in March in Tallahassee. “It’s sort of a Think Tank for like-minded professionals,” she said. “We will talk about best practices and action research, focused on collaboration. There’s a move to have collaboration among adults as well as students, It’s a great idea, and how do we make it happen?” Sigmon said that even in first grade, it’s important for the standards to address the world, not only as it is, but as it will be. “You have to teach kids how to think,” she said. “The jobs they’ll have aren’t even invented yet. How do you prepare students for doing jobs that aren’t even there? How do you think outside the box? We’re learning ourselves, as educators.” Sigmon, who still lives in Fort Pierce, is married and has three children 22, 15 and 9. A cousin, Amy Fazzalaro, also teaches at Palm Pointe. For Sigmon, this award encapsulates her loves. “I have a passion for teaching and for first grade,” she said, “I love troubleshooting. I’m honored.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie county residents met last week in Tradition to invite public support and request volunteers to help rescue an antique Carousel. The Friends of Lucy’s Carousel, a 501c3 organization, have their eye on the historic 1914 PTC #53, also known as a PTC Carousel, a Grand Carousel. “There’s a connection to Florida history, which makes this particular piece unique,” says Ronald E. Bowen, President and Board member of the organization. The carousel is a piece of American amusement history. Made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters Inc., the 53rd carousel is now almost 100 years old. “It’s half the age of our city,” said Bowen. In the 1960s, the carousel met with an early retirement due to a slight fire that damaged the piece and placed it storage. Charles Walker, who owned and restored the carousel, then took it to Griffin, Georgia before he died. Where the carousel will land if acquired and brought to Florida is yet to be determined. “We want to present this as a gift to the city, and our first choice is to keep it in St. Lucie County. Florida holds the second highest standards for amusement rides,” Bowen said. “The intention is to restore the carousel and actually use it for rides, weddings, and more.” The idea is to bring the entire community together, and “not just the adults, or the children, not just the infants, but the whole family,” stated Dan Horenberger, president and founder of Brass Ring Entertainment, an organization helping Friends of Lucy’s Carousel pur-
chase the carousel. In 40 years, the company has bought and sold more carousels than anywhere in the county. “This carousel is reasonable and the price is lower since it’s coming from an estate. It’s an excellent deal and the price is set to about half million dollars lower than what carousels normally cost, even for smaller ones,” said Horenberger. The carousel could also become a significant revenue source in the future for the community. Friends of Lucy’s Carousel anticipate that revenue will reach close to triple what the carousel itself will cost when all is said and done. The Grand Carousel can facilitate anywhere from 200,000 to 250,000 riders a year, depending on various parameters such as hours of operation. At a cost of $2 a ride, the customary charge for a ticket on a carousel, in a short period of time, could add up. That means if the Grand carousel is open for just 3 hours a day, 300 days a year, with 68 horses and two chariots running per ride, 75-100 people can safely ride each hour — 5 rides per hour with 300 riders total adds up to 1,500 riders a day. “Carousels historically bring families and community members together all throughout the country,” said Horenberger, a statement that resonates with many who are joining forces with carousel rescue movement. During the first of awareness meetings, many members and guests shared memories of their own, family moments that centered on a carousel. “A carousel is a place where families meet up for a scoop of ice cream,” says Horenberger. Port St. Lucie’s inaugural City University moved close to 25 volunteer participants through the inner workings of the city each Wednesday for six consecutive weeks. Tonight we cap it off with the big finale of Economic Development and Citizen Services. The joys of living in our corner of paradise are that class began at 5:30 along the north fork of the St. Lucie River where we were greeted by Mayor Greg Oravec. He spoke of the importance of creating an enticing city for business to want to expand, move or
start in. This is done with police and fire safety, parks for families to play in, stores for them to shop in and schools that grow young minds. Questions were asked of what will be looked back as bad decisions of economic development with the failures of several companies in the biotech and digital film industry. The answers were honest whether it was what anybody wanted to hear or not. Bridget Kean, Community Redevelopment Agency director, took the class on a walking tour on the Riverwalk hugging the perimeter of the St. Lucie River just north of Port St. Lucie Boulevard. I have used that location numerous times in the past for family photos and portraits where I want to convey that Florida atmosphere on its waterways.
This week was the first we had a dual location. We traveled a half mile across the boulevard to the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens to meet up with our next two presenters. Bridget Kean, then Daniel Holbrook, assistant city manager, and Patricia Selmer, director of community services, each came on to explain what the city does while we are all at work. The three divulged the peaks and valleys of our Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and their goals, the SHIP program to refurbish homes that fall under the category of blight to keep our neighborhoods from turning to a slum category and the chronology
Dear Editor: As one of the members of the St. Lucie West Services District Board of Supervisors, and a St. Lucie West resident — and past president of the Cascades Homeowners Association — I wanted to share some thoughts and comments about Your Voice News & Views. At a recent SLWSD board meeting, it was noted how important communication is with our St. Lucie West residents relative to the district’s operations and impact on the community and its 6,700 plus accounts and the families they represent. There are many projects and issues that affect the community and some very important, worthwhile upgrades and changes are in planning stages, and occurring.
At each meeting your staff writer, Patrick McCallister, is present and provides very sound and effective articles regarding the district. I want to commend him and the staff at Your Voice for your dedication to helping in holding to our SLWSD mission and our vision to be “A professionally led and respected organization which contributes to the features which make St. Lucie West distinctive”. Personally, I find that Your Voice provides a better vehicle for my wife’s and my understanding of the immediate actions and events within the SLW community than the local daily paper. Connecticut, Poland, and Saudi Arabia have expressed interest. “It’s $600,000 for the title, transportation, and fees, but we can secure the title with a deposit for $50,000.” At the turn of the 20th century, nearly 4,000 carousels were carved and Eastern European immigrants did most of the work. “Several people are looking at the carousel PTC #53,” says Horenberger. “All over the world, not just in America.” Currently, PTC #53 is the only Grand Carousel available, and it’s

expected to be acquired due to its rarity. Damage or loss due to fires, floods, and the Great Depression ended the era of carousel making. Today, only 75 remain in existence; originally, 250 Grand carousels were built. “The carvings and history make this an ideal piece to attract tourists to our community,” says Robin F. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Gertrude Walker has been around for a while. She’s been Supervisor of Elections since 1980. “I’ve spent a lifetime in this office,” she said. Gov. Bob Graham appointed Walker to the job in 1980 after the former Supervisor, James Brooks, died in the middle of an election. The Democratic Party nominated Walker to be his election replacement. She’d worked at the office for more than a decade before then, starting in her late teens. Walker counts 1984 as her first election, and she’s won seven re-elections since. “I feel very confident running on my record,” Walker said. During an interview about her candidacy, Walker often veered into talking about elections — how each election year is different from others, evolving voting technology, election officials’ developing practices, and the like. Walker seems more interested in elections than her candidacy. “I love the whole process,” Walker said. “The constantly changing environment of elections. I’ve always been very excited about the process and being part of the election process.” Walker said the greatest challenge facing the St. Lucie elections office is finding a permanent home. That would require action by the St. Lucie Board of County Commissioners. Elections offices have needs others don’t. Walker said staff has done an outstanding job taking space not designed for an elections office and making

Still, it’s not an elections office. “One of the biggest challenges facing this office is having a facility built that facilitates the functions of this office well,” Walker said. The office — at 4132 Lake Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce — is in the Orange Blossom Business Center. That was a temporary arrangement started in 2004. As the county has grown, elections have grown with it. “I’ve taken on additional space here, but it’s not space that’s designed to make an efficient office,” Walker said. Walker said the other challenge facing whomever is elected this year is budgeting. The Board of County Commissioners approves the office’s annual budget, similarly to the Sheriff’s Office. Walker said the supervisor has to give county commissioners reasonable

TURTLES from page A9 their migration habits are an area of study that scientists have yet to decode. “Turtles returning to the beaches they were hatched from is often referred to as natal homing and they do return to the same beaches to nest,” says Grace Botson, senior scientist for the Ecological Associates Inc., located in Jensen Beach. Botson, Botson is a St. Lucie West resident who has worked with the organization for almost 10 years. Her interest in marine biology began in high school and grew during graduate school at the Florida Atlantic University. “Depending on the species, which can range from loggerhead, green turtles and leatherbacks,” said Botson. “The average clutch size can range from about 80-135 eggs. Leatherbacks lay fewer eggs; loggerheads and green turtles lay more.” Nesting females travel upwards of 1400 miles from feeding area to nesting grounds multiple times during a single season. Depending on climate, temperature and species type, hatchlings arrive 6 -10 weeks later. Soon, the hatchlings play their part as they instinctively start their own journey. Interestingly, a sea turtle, un-
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM disrupted, and born in any part of the Treasure Coast beachfront will, in fact, return specifically to the same place it was born to lay its own eggs. In other words, a resident turtle remains a lifelong part of the natural landscape of its community and a vested partner. “The Treasure Coast range which includes Martin and St. Lucie County, has limited development compared to other county locations. So, for the turtles, our areas provide a safe, quiet nesting area,” says Mark Music, marine biologist and adjunct biology professor at Indian River State College, also a St. Lucie resident. When a sea turtle is unable to return home successfully, in a sense, that sea turtle is ‘lost,’ also known as ‘disorientation.’ “The turtles navigate by the moon, and this is why people are told to keep the lights off while on the beach,” says Music. Disrupting that journey searching for nests with artificial lighting, or handling them during delicate beginnings, will offset their instincts and creates confusion. “Disorientation by artificial lighting on developed beaches can cause hatching and adult turtles to meander rather than

Keen recommended that the council move forward with creating a primitive campground that would be open to supervised youth groups, Such as Boy Scouts He said it would likely cost $300,000 to $400,000 to prepare a proposed 25 acres. Council members instead leaned toward setting up a campground that would accommodate families with recreational vehicles. Berger said a campground could draw tourists from South and Central Florida. “We’re right in the middle of West Palm and Orlando,” she said. Berger and fellow council member Shannon Martin are avid campers, and strongly supported moving forward with establishing a city campground at McCarty. However, other council members said they’d like a campground, but are happy to let others fill it. “I have (camping) experience with the Boy Scouts and Marine Corps — that’s enough camping for me,” Ron Bowen said. Nevertheless, Bowen said that creating a campground at McCarty makes sense.
Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said she, too, has no wish to camp. “I did once camp before I was 15, and did camp once after that,” she said. “And there have been many, many years in between.” However, Bartz said she knows many campers, and that leads her to believe the proposed city campground should accommodate recreational vehicles. “Everybody I know that camps, I don’t know anyone who uses a tent,” she said. Bartz added, “I hear mostly RVs, that type of thing. It seems to me if we’re going to utilize (McCarty for camping) that would be more desirable.” Mayor Greg Oravec said he sees economic opportunities in a McCarty Ranch campground, but would prefer that the city find someone else to develop it. He noted that Bass Pro Shops is in St. Lucie West and might want the publicity of a nearby campground bearing its name. He said the city’s park and recreation department should think larger, too. “I see this as a much bigger opportunity than 25 acres,” Oravec said. The city council directed staff to write letters to businesses that might be interested in building a campground at McCarty and aim toward one that would accommodate recreational vehicles.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Diners at the Park Avenue BBQ Grille are feeding the worms. And it’s something that could revolutionize restaurants. The restaurant owner, Dean Lavallee, founded the not-for-profit Sublime Soil about six years ago to experiment with turning restaurant waste into gold. Lavallee said too many businesses are locked in a mode of throwing away everything, or recycling some of their waste and feeling good about it even if they have no idea what happens to plastic bottles after the recycling truck comes by. “We don’t really want to be recycling,” Lavallee said. “We see a third alternative — design upcycle.” Sublime Soil recently received an award for its recycling experimentation from Palm City’s Keep Martin Beautiful. The award was created specifically for Sublime Soil, because the non-profit didn’t fit in any of the environmental stewardship organization’s annual award categories. County Commissioner John Haddox nominated Sublime Soil for another award. Sublime Soil has numerous facets, but they’re centered around two pri-

For a week 145 flags flew in front of city hall representing the 145 children who died from abuse or neglect in Florida last year.
CASTLE from page A1 Training and Life Enrichment, hosted three memory fields of the flags in February and early March from Vero Beach to Stuart. Port St. Lucie’s field at city hall was up from Feb. 26 to March 4. Theresa Garbarino-May, executive director of CASTLE, told dedication attendees that Florida has an above-average child abuse rate, about 47 percent higher than the national average. “About five or six children will be abused while we’re sitting here talking about how to prevent it,” she said. CASTLE started in 1981 and has developed a large number of
services to help families with histories of or are at risk for abuse or neglect. At its core CASTLE focuses on teaching parents how to parent to reduce frustrations that lead to abuse and neglect. In an interview after the memory field dedication, Garbarino-May said she entertains a hope of one year having no children to memorialize with flags. She said that’ll only happen when everyone makes themselves part of the solutions. “I think everyone assumes someone else is taking care of the problem (of child abuse),” she said. “This is not going away.” One of CASTLE’s annual fund-

CASTLE from page A18 raisers is coming up in St. Lucie West — the 12th annual Stomp Out Child Abuse 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run. It’ll be at Tradition Field, 525 S.W. Peacock Blvd, on April 30. “We really, really need teams for (Stomp Out Child Abuse 5K Run/ Walk and 10K Run),” spokeswoman Katie Kowanic said in a telephone interview. She added, “We’re looking for runners, we’re looking for walkers, we’re looking for team leaders, and we’re looking for sponsors.” CASTLE, which serves the entire Treasure Coast, has a $2.3 million budget. Much comes from the local United Ways and Children’s Service councils, but Garbarino-May said in the interview that it must raise about $750,000 a year. That’s where walkers and runners at the Stomp Out Child
Abuse 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run come in, Kowanic said. “Runners and walkers can raise money to help prevent child abuse by getting more team members, by getting pledges from friends, neighbors and co-workers, and businesses can participate through sponsorships, sponsoring an employee team and encouraging their staff to participate,” she said. Race registration is $25 for the 5K, and $35 for the 10K if done by April 4. Prices increase $5 April 5 to 22, and another $5 after. Youths under the age of 18 are $15 for either run no matter when they’re registered. To get T-shirts, participants must register by April 9. So, they use lighting cues to orient themselves,” he says; hence, why sometimes hatchlings are found in the dunes or on the road. “Momma sea turtles look for the darkest beaches. Too much activity, and they won’t feel comfortable to lay their eggs, and do what’s called a false crawl, then return back to the ocean which inhibits their nesting” according to Ken Gioeli. Gioeli is M.Ag., program extension agent with IV/Natural Resources & the Environment, and secretary, who also serves on the Florida Master Naturalist Governing Board at the University of Florida, St. Lucie County Extension Office. If a resident finds a disoriented sea turtle, call the local sheriff’s or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (FWC) at (888) 404-FWCC. They will track their path and assist the sea turtle to safety. “Even something as simple as having on a television that can be seen through a window from the beach could cause disorientation,” says Gioeli. “Any artificial lights can mislead a sea turtle and lead them to the dunes, or buildings. They burn up all
their energy, become malnourished, fall into pools, and die.” Residents who would like to volunteer to help promote awareness on regulations are asked to contact Mark Gioeli, University of Florida St. Lucie County Extension Office by calling (772) 462-1660, or email ktgioeli@ufl. edu. “Since 1993, all the years that they have been doing this, St. Lucie County has never issued a fine but get the situation to a point where the lighting problems have been corrected with property owners,” said Gioeli. TREASURE COAST — Students from 12 high schools in St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties flexed their mathematical muscles last month in the annual Math Olympics hosted by the Indian River State College Math Department. Participants competed both individually and as teams from John Carroll, Lincoln Park Academy, Martin County, St. Edward’s, St. Lucie West Centennial, Sebastian River, South Fork, Treasure Coast, Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood, Jensen Beach and Vero Beach high schools. Competition was fierce as individual opponents started the day with a 40-question written exam assessing mastery of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. The 10-question team competition followed with extra incentives for first responders. Geoffrey Zheng of St. Lucie West attends Lincoln Park Academy. He won first place with a perfect score of 39/39 in the individual competition, followed by a tie for runner-up between Holden Young
of Palm City and student at Martin County High School, and Chris Blancher and Jimmy Desai from Jensen Beach High School. Zheng also competes on Brain Bowl and is a semi-finalist for the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program (announced in September 2015). First place in the team competition went to Nishanth Chalasami, Lei Zheng, Peter Zheng and Zane Zudens from St. Edward’s. Lincoln Park Academy Team No. 1 and Vero Beach White Team tied for second place with the hard work of Carlos Arce, Jason Dennis, Bradley Gilrane, Geoffrey Zheng, Nikki Bouldin, Jacob Hoekzema, Colin Rhodes and Josh Tucker. Prizes included tuition scholarships, gift certificates for Pearson products, books and puzzles. He’s also an obsessive thinker. “We wanted to do something that was more than window dressing and create a more novel middle-level restaurant,” he said. Like all restaurants, Park Avenue has plenty of waste. Lavallee said he realized that was where his company could make the most progress in making more profit and saving the planet for future generations. “We dreamt about zero waste,” he said. So Lavallee did some research and discovered vermiculture. Uh, that’s worm farming. Vermiculture, in this case, is used to decompose organic food waste and turn it into nutrient-rich soil. The process reduces landfill waste, rebuilds soil, saves energy and even lessens water consumption. Lavallee had an idea to collect the food waste at Park Avenue, send it to a worm farm, let the worms turn it into great soil, and plant crops that they then serve at the restaurant. “Everybody said we were crazy and it wouldn’t work,” Lavallee said. “I don’t respond to, ‘No.’”
Lavallee found out there are some “No’s” you just can’t get around. There’s not a lot of land in South Florida zoned for vermiculture. He started it at home and his wife was the first to tell him he couldn’t open a worm farm there. Lavallee poked around South Florida startled that vermiculture wasn’t in anyone’s codes. He eventually found a friendly county staff in Martin that helped him find acres to try his ideas. “We kept this dream underground while we were testing formulas to get the food consumed by worms,” he said. Lavallee met Brian Sales, who’d founded the U.S. Green Building Council (South Florida chapter) Green Veterans Group, and made him a job offer to take his ideas and turn them into profitable realities. Sales is the farm manager. “He showed me the farm, and at the time I wasn’t looking for a job,” Sales said. But Lavallee kept at him. Sales said, he was intrigued by Lavallee’s idea to turn restaurant waste into worm food that becomes worm castings, a natural fertilizer prized by horticulturist and small farmers. That fertilizer is used for Sublime Soil’s expanding inventory of experimen-

Sublime Soil also gives away worm castings to the public. “We’re probably at more than three million worms,” Sales said. When Sales and fellow veteran Ernie Lefler aren’t feeding waste to worms or giving folks castings, they’re turning Park Avenue’s emptied glass bottles into stained glass windows and art that the not-for-profit sells back to the eight-restaurant chain. They also turn additional bottles into tumbled-glass garden mulch. Lavallee has a host of other waste-reduction, cost-saving ideas he’s aiming to make industry standards. For example, Lavallee wonders why his restaurants take beer bottles out of boxes, then toss the cardboard into the recycling bin. “I’d love to have my beer boxes with perforations, so I could turn the beer boxes in coasters,” he said. ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Before “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice collaborated on another show with roots in the Bible. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” based on the story of Joseph and his brothers in the Book of Genesis, was the first of the duo’s works to be performed. It is often considered a rock opera and is almost completely sung. It has become a favorite of schools and community theater groups and has been performed throughout the world. The national touring company of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” presents the show March 16 at the Sunrise Theatre. Abby Jaros, who appears in the ensemble and understudies several wives, is a Boca Raton native who majored in musical theater at the University of Central Florida. This is her first national tour, although she has appeared in regional theater in shows that include “West Side Story,” “Nunsense,” and “Spamalot.” She spoke from the road about the show and being on her first national tour, “I moved to New York a month after graduation (in December 2014,)” she said. “I hit the pavement running. Being on a

TREASURE COAST — Fort Pierce’s Fenn center was the scene of the gruesome, the ghastly and the gory on March 4, 5 and 6 as horrorphiles (fans of the horror genre of entertainment) descended onto the site to rub elbows with horror stars and all things macabre. American Horror Story fans were treated with two AHS fan favorites; actress Naomi Grossman who plays the precocious pinhead Pepper and Mat Fraser, whose disability Phocomelia landed him the role of Paul the illustrated seal boy in FX television’s American Horror Story-Freakshow (Fraser’s arms are underdeveloped, giving them the appearance of flippers). Aside from horror celebs, doz-
ens of locals from Big Dog Comics to Treasure Coast horror author Keith Rommel set up shop as well. An event favorite was Balthazar’s Band of Beauties, a troupe of volunteer performers who set up an authentic throwback show reminiscent of the great turnof-the-century travelling freak shows. A gaggle of characters from a ghostly gunslinger to a gypsy with no eyes led visitors through a maze of themed tents into the world of Balthazar’s Beauties. The group, about 300 strong, describes themselves on Facebook as “a team of awesome people who enjoy cosplaying and strive to spread positivity in cosplay.” Katelyn Johnson, from Tradition, who plays a gypsy named Simza, says her alter ego comes naturally to her. “I grew up in theater, so I’ve always been a huge fan of costumes,” she says. “I’m a giant

The group, which includes butchers, builders, welders and seamstresses, draws upon collective talents to pull off realistic depictions of early 20th-century freak shows. Palm City butcher Scotty Button depicts the ghostly gunslinger Roland Martin in the Balthazar’s Band of Beauties show. Originally joining as a woodworker, building set pieces and props for the troupe’s shows, he was asked to play in front of people this time rather than work behind the scenes. Button says being a performer has been a learning experience. “I’m used to being quiet, not really talking to people, but being in this group has really helped me open up,” he says. Both Katelyn Johnson and Scotty Button represent a new type of fan who do more than appreciate a film genre. They live it. “Cosplay used to be a real subculture thing, but a lot of people let their freak flags fly now,” Johnson said. Event organizer Ryan Strick-

land, whose company South Florida Events management was responsible for last year’s wildly successful Treasure Coast Comi-con, says he’s impressed with how the Treasure Coast has reacted to non-traditional events such as the Freak Show. “We had a great cast. Before we executed the Comi-con in Port St. Lucie in 2015,” he says. “Who would have thought we’d have some of the talent we had on the Treasure Coast?” Though the event had to compete with the last weekend of the St. Lucie County Fair, Treasure Coast Seafood Fest and the Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival, Strickland wasn’t unhappy with the turnout. “A lot was going on this weekend and we still had just over 3,000 people in two days,” he says. Katelyn Johnson, or Simza the Gypsy, felt good about more than just the turnout. She felt good about being part of something bigger than just attendance numbers. “You get to nerd out and be around a bunch of dorks doing things together,” she says. The voices are beautiful and the dancers are some of the best I’ve worked with.” Jaros said that the show is wonderful for the entire family. “It’s a great show to bring kids to,” she said. “I see little kids in the front row with the biggest smiles on their faces. It’s a show for every generation. Each generation will benefit from it. My grandmother, who’s 90, will love the show. She loves dancing. The kids will love the hip-hop.” Jaros will have a cheering section at every Florida stop on the tour. “I’ve gotten word from family, friends and colleagues that they’re coming,” she said. “I think I have someone in the audience for each of the Florida shows. I’m grateful for all the support. My parents are seeing it about four times. They’re my biggest supporters.” Jaros hopes that theater lovers and those who are not big on the theater will all come out. “Non-theater people say they love it,” she said. “Each cast member has a spotlight and an integral role. It’s cool to watch people work so hard to put all the puzzle pieces together. It’s wonderful night of the theater.” The Sunrise Theatre, 117 S.
