TREASURE COAST — Palm City resident Gary Murphy is angry. He’s not alone. On Friday, June 24, news broke that the Florida Oceanographic Society found blue-green algae at Bathtub Beach and parts north. “There’ve been scattered reports of it being even north of Jensen
Beach,” Mark Perry, executive director, said. When Murphy talks about Palm City Bay — the St. Lucie River’s South Fork nestled between Palm City and Stuart — he pauses frequently and apologizes for his anger. Then he expresses more anger. “It looks like a sewer,” he said. “It looks like you could walk on it. The whole bay is green.” Not far from his waterfront home the Martin County Health Department has signs warning against contact with the water posted at Charlie Leighton Park telling people that there’re two bacterial outbreaks — enteric bacteria along with blue-green
algae. Murphy said things look far worse than they ever did in the Lost Summer, 2013. That year there was a huge public outcry against Lake Okeechobee water releases and likely related bacteria issues in the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. That outcry culminated in creation of the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee. Sen. Joe Negron headed up that committee. Based on the committee’s recommendations, the Florida Legislature appropriated $232 million to help with Everglades and Indian
PALM CITY — Mapp Road work could start in 2017, but both lanes should stay open. Terry Rauth, deputy county engineer, gave the Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee a report on proposed engineering department work at its last regular meeting, Monday, June 20. “What we’re planning to do is when we widen for bike lanes we’ll widen on one side,” she said. Rauth said that after road crews build the additional width on the western side of Mapp for bike lanes, the road will be restriped. That’ll create two vehicular lanes, along with a 5-foot bike lane on each side. The project will add 11 to 12 feet of road surface. “We’re looking at starting in September, 2017,” Rauth said. That depends on the County Commission approving funding for the proposed project. The day after the advisory committee meeting, Commissioner John Haddox moved that the County Commission, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, add on-street parking to the engineering department’s proposed work that would stretch from Martin Downs Boulevard south to the recently-widened Martin Highway. Haddox said that with the addition of storm-water management elements to the bike lanes, much of the Mapp Road Town Center Design crafted 15 years ago will be done. “That project is probably going to get 80 percent complete,” Haddox

MARTIN COUNTY — July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to family gatherings and barbecues. Martin County is kicking off the 4th with some special activities such as in Palm City with the fifth annual Dash ‘n Blast trail 5K at the South Florida Shooting Club, 500 S.W. Long Drive. The run will kick off at 7 a.m. Packet pick up starts at 5:30 a.m. The run benefits Mary’s Shelter of the Treasure Coast. Entry is $25. Entry at www.active.com. The fun continues with the Doggy Paddle & Sail 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the U.S. Sailing Center, 1955 N.E. Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach. Folks can take cruises with their pooches on paddleboards, or a sailboat. There’ll be a pie eating contest, field games, a 50/50 raffle and more. The City of Stuart will continue the annual tradition of fireworks over the St. Lucie River. That’ll be at 9 p.m. Fireworks will be visible from locations all along the river, from the Roosevelt Bridge east. Before the fireworks folks can take in a special Rockin’ Riverwalk starting at 4 p.m. Stuart Main Street and the Downtown Business Association of Stuart are hosting the event. “There’ll be a band,” Thondra Lanese, executive director of Stuart Main Street, said. “There won’t be any venders. It’ll be just the music. Three hours. The band is Humdingers.” John Adams — the man who had the unenviable task of following George Washington into the presidency — predicted that America would forever celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and merrymaking every July 2. Wait. What? July 2? Yep. The Continental Congress passed the Resolution for Independence on July 2, 1776. That’s the forerunner to a better known document we celebrate today: the

The Revolutionary War pretty well started with the battles of Lexington and Concord, April 19, 1775. The Congress made it more or less official by passing the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms on July 6, 1775. So, where do we get July 4 for Independence Day? Is that the day
all those continental congressmen signed the Declaration of Independence? Nah. Most of them signed it on Aug. 2, 1776. July 4 is the day Congress adopted the Declaration, and John Hancock, President of the Congress, signed it. Within hours of the Declaration’s adoption, a fella named John Dunlap printed numerous copies. They’re called the Dunlap Broadsides.

MARTIN COUNTY — The food trucks will be parking on Fridays. On July 15 Food Truck Extravaganza is cranking up at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 5150 S.E. Railway Ave., Port Salerno. “This is going to be our first outing with the food trucks,” Arthur D’Amato, organizer, said. It’ll kick off a twice-monthly event that’ll be on the second and fourth Friday of the month at the same location. “It’s going to be a variety of trucks,” D’Amato said. Among them will be trucks featuring grilled cheese sandwiches, hamburgers, hotdogs, fries, ice cream and Italian ice, along with— “Cuban food,” D’Amato said. “We’ll probably have some Mexican food. It’s a large variety. It’s a lot of them. We’re hoping to start with 20 trucks, 15 to 20.” Martin’s only other food truck event is at Stuart’s Memorial Park on Mondays. D’Amato said he plans on expanding food truck events to Palm City. They’ll likely also be on Fridays. “It’s going to be a community gathering event, and this will be

With increasing reports of bluegreen algae impacting waterways on the Treasure Coast, U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) called on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy to conduct an independent assessment of the water quality in the region, including Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie River, and the Indian River Lagoon. Murphy is also requesting the EPA provide technical and financial assistance to help increase the state’s ongoing water quality testing. “Our waterways are in crisis. While the state is ultimately responsible for water quality, our community has growing concerns
with its ability to adequately test the increasing number of significant algal blooms in our waterways. I am calling on the federal government to step in with assistance to the state for sampling and conduct its own assessment of the local water quality because Treasure Coast residents have a right to know what is in our water and if it is a threat to public health,” said Murphy. “This problem has been decades in the making, and there won’t be a solution overnight. But we will not stop fighting until we reach the ultimate goal of sending more clean water south, reducing the need for damaging discharges fueling toxic algae growth. How-

PALM CITY — It is now possible to find out a great deal about your family tree on the computer. This has helped to make genealogy one of the most popular hobbies in the United States. Most of us, however, don’t know where to start and wonder if advertised websites are worth the time and money. Robert Nagro, a library assistant at the Cummings Library and an amateur genealogist, is the coordinator for “Genealogy Summer at the Library” series, four events that will help you get started and introduce you to resources and techniques of which you might be unaware. The first class, “Genealogy as a Hobby: An Introduction to Family Genealogy Research,” will take place at the Cummings Library July 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. “The first class is divided into three sections,” Nagro said. “The first will explain the hobby of genealogy and what you get out of it. Real examples will be used. The second section will be about how to get started and where you can get help. There will be website information. The third section is about software you can get. Ancestry.com is the most prominent. I’ll show a couple of them and give information to know which to use. There are
multiple tools of various sorts.” The second event, also at the Cummings Library, is July 15 from 2-3:30 p.m. Called “Photo Preservation 101: Document Scanning and Editing,” it is a “How To” session. “It’s about handling documents and photos to save and edit on the computer,” Nagro said. “Most people have shoeboxes of old pictures. It’s a way to learn how to get them digitized to put them into a family tree.” The third event will be held at the Blake Library and is presented by the Martin County Genealogical Society. It will be held Aug. 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. and members of the society will be on hand to answer specific questions budding genealogists have. The final session will be a Genealogy Fair on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m.-3p.m. It will be sponsored by the Family History Center of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Palm City and will involve lectures on a variety of genealogy topics. Nagro became interested in the hobby as he researched his own family. He has learned a great deal about it, including which ancestors are easier to trace. “In the United States, ancestors who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony after the Pilgrims have all kinds of records,” he said. “On the other hand, people

Treasure Coast, a unique outpouring of support has helped raise over $1,000 so far for families and victims affected by the shooting. Artists from the local tattoo community came together at Daneal Frank’s Beyond Reality Tattoo Boutique in Port St. Lucie to offer Pulse inspired tattoos for

Nutrient-laden discharges from Lake Okeechobee coupled with local basin run-off have altered the most biodiverse estuary in America, the Indian River Lagoon. Home to more than 4,000 species of plants and animals, including dozens of threatened and endangered species, dolphins, pelicans, and one-third of America’s manatee population, the Indian River Lagoon is a national treasure under assault. Due to historic El Niño-fueled rainfall, polluted discharges unusually began in the dry season and continue into the wet season. In fact, the Army Corps has discharged more freshwater into the brackish Indian River Lagoon this year than in all of 2013 when the “Lost Summer” wreaked environmental havoc on the Treasure Coast. Last month, residents and environmental scientists began noticing blue-green algae. These blooms harm the economy and tourism, threaten wildlife, and pose a number of health risks when deemed toxic. While the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reporting toxicity in blue-green algae throughout the ecosystem, underfunding and lack of capacity is leaving many of the reported blooms untested, according to recent media reports. Those who call this area home are angry and frustrated. We have a right to know what is in our water. While the State of Florida is ultimately responsible for our water

River Lagoon restoration. However, Murphy is underwhelmed by government response to the bacteria levels and algae bloom behind his house. These days he has a hard time telling where his backyard ends and the algae-filled Palm City Bay starts. They’re both photosynthesis green, camouflaging the boundary between them. “People are pissed,” Murphy said. The South Florida Water Management District identified a blue-green algae bloom in Lake Okeechobee in the early part of May. At the time it was covering about 33 square miles of the lake. It’s grown since then. It quickly migrated to Port Myaka, just east of Lake Okeechobee. That’s where the C44, the St. Lucie Canal, starts. By the middle of May folks from the Florida Oceanographic Institute found samples of likely blue-green algae at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam, 2200 S.W. Canal St., Stuart. That’s where water from the C44 enters the St. Lucie River and starts its journey to the Indian River Lagoon and ocean. Two days later the institute found suspected blue-green algae at the Palm City Bridge, about six miles north of the lock. Then others started spotting it. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has been testing for the blue-green algae and notifying the county’s health department where it’s spotted. The health department posts health advisories. “Our newest signs went out in Sandsprit Park in Stuart,” Renay Rouse, public information officer at the health department, said shortly before the blue-green algae was found at Bathtub Beach. Blue-green algae is generally waterborne, although it can survive on land. Enteric bacteria is found in intestinal tracts. It gets into waterways through fecal pollution that often migrates in storm water. Enteric bacteria can usually only be toxic enough to cause nausea and diarrhea along with skin and eye irritation and possibly rashes. However, that can be an extreme health hazard to the very old, very young and seriously ill people. Blue-green algae blooms can generate more generally hazardous neurotoxins and hepatotoxins, poisons affecting the nervous system and liver. Blue-green algae blooms often cause largescale aquatic die-offs. The state is reporting toxicity of these blooms to be “low to extremely low.” Nerissa Okiye, Martin County’s tourism & marketing manager, recently told the Old Palm City
“This used to be beautiful water 10 years ago,” he said. “We’ve had enough.” Gary Murphy of Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee that her office is getting calls from folks wondering if they should change visiting plans and avoid the Treasure Coast. “People are really worried about this,” she said. Organizers of the annual Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim, Jensen Beach, ran the race on Saturday, June 25. Shortly after, the beach was closed to swimming for the weekend. The next large ocean swimming event in Martin County is the Hutchinson Island Series Triathlon, July 17. That, too, will be at Jensen Beach. Some local triathletes are planning to skip the race out of concerns about the blue-green algae washing into the ocean from the St. Lucie. Perry said blue-green algae is generally intolerant of salinity. “The high discharges pushes (freshwater) out in to the ocean,” he said. Perry added, “(The water) not as saline as the ocean in those locations.” He said until less water is being discharged from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie, the blue-green algae can continue to make its way into the ocean. So far there are no state reports of blue-green algae in the North Fork of the St. Lucie, along north Stuart and Port St. Lucie. However, the St. Lucie County Health Department has posted health warnings about enteric bacteria along the North Fork. Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County are now doing microbial source tracking to identify the sources of the enteric bacteria in the North Fork. That’ll continue until August. June to August is the wet season in South Florida. The testing will be repeated next February to May, the dry season. The county and city will hand the study results to the state’s environmental protection and health agencies. “We have the resources to do it,” Jenny Newell, public information officer at the city, said. “We’ve got lab technicians. We’ve got the resources to run this particular test.” Meanwhile, Murphy is looking at a large algae bloom from his Palm City home he bought to be on the St. Lucie River. “This used to be beautiful water 10 years ago,” he said. “We’ve had enough.”

There may be many people with the same first name, as well. “There are techniques to use,” Nagro said. “As more and more people are using the Internet, you can get hits from other people. If you have an ancestor you know a little about, you can search and compare it with other family trees. There may be three other people with that ancestor. You can do things you could never do before to fill in the gaps that used to stop people.” Nagro said that Census records also give a lot of information, but for all of it, you have to be willing to do some digging. “It’s a detective story,” he said. “It’s the stories of the people you find and that’s the most important thing. It’s the stories about the people you’re connected to. It’s also a mystery. You ask, “I wonder how I can figure out when that guy arrived or how he got here?’ There’s a clue here and

Later that day, folks gleefully destroyed a statue of King George III at the foot of Broadway on the Bowling Green. That’s where the Wall Street Charging Bull sculpture is these days. Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1777 with quite the celebration by some reports. Adams described the affair to his wife, Abigail Adams, in a letter. The American Revolutionary War lasted until 1783. Britain tried to cut it short by sending the Carlisle Peace Commission to offer the upstart United States full self-gov-

But if the Americans took the offer, theirs was still going to be a colony. The revolutionaries held onto their dream of starting a new nation founded on democratic ideas. From what historians can tell, big Independence Day celebrations largely fell by the wayside as the young nation faced numerous crises. That is until the War of 1812 and the second British defeat renewed Americans’ interest in Independence Day. After that war, celebrations on July 4 took off. Congress passed a bill on June 28, 1870, making Independence Day an official national holiday.

Leann Tippetts from Palm City, volunteered at the event. “I’ve known Daneal for almost a year. I feel for the situation that happened out there and figured ‘anything I can do to help out, why not?’” Tiffane D’Andria lives in Tradition and says she saw alleged shooter Omar Mateen all the time on her drive to work. “It just really hits (home) because this guy was so close to where I live. I knew him by face. To see someone every day, you still never really know somebody.” She got her tattoo to memorialize the event, help out the families and honor her friends in the LGBTQ community. “They just wanted to have a good time. It’s so sad that such a happy environment was invaded. That’s why I’m getting it today, for them.” “Everybody has so much anger and hate”, says tattoo artist Grant Effinger. “You can’t counteract a bad situation with more violence, you just can’t.” Effinger owns Bat Tattz in Port St. Lucie, and was a volunteer artist at the fundraiser. He said he hopes his participation in the fundraiser helps change the way people approach things that are uncontrollable in life. “There’s certain things in the world you’re never going to change. Leann Tippetts of Palm City Reality Tattoos echoes Grant Effinger’s approach to dealing with a tragedy like the Pulse shooting. Like Grant, he says he hopes his business’s participation in the fundraiser raises awareness about dealing with tragedy together, despite differences. “It shows people can come together to help out instead of fighting against each other all the time.” Frank’s business is family owned and operated and the latest in a long pedigree of tattoo shops across the Treasure Coast. His mother Linda opened the first tattoo parlor in Fort Pierce in 1979. Frank started tattooing when he was 13 and opened his business in 2000. Giving back to the victims of the shooting, he says, is an extension of his commitment to families. “It’s our way of doing what we can to help out. It’s all about family.” In all, nearly 30 people got permanent ink memorials to the Pulse victims. Some were simple heartbeats scribbled onto their wrist. Others were rainbow colored hearts and messages. But all were meant to reach out to victims these people may never meet, to remind them that they aren’t alone in their suffering and in their grief — a way to say that we, all of us, each and every one, are Orlando. He added. “To hold off on the parking when we’re doing all that work doesn’t make sense.” Commissioner Doug Smith agreed, and seconded Haddox’s motion. “I’d hate to see us do things twice, and I think that’s what we’re doing,” Smith said at the meeting. The motion to add on-street parking to the proposed project failed 3-2 with commissioners Anne Scott, Sarah Heard and Ed Fielding opposing it. Earlier this year the commission gave a 4-1 nod to the engineering department’s request to spend about $125,000 on design work for its Mapp Road project. Heard opposed the design work, citing concerns that widening the road would add to flooding issues in Old Palm City, the area east of Mapp to the St. Lucie River. Last May the commission voted down a proposed Community Redevelopment Agency, CRA, project to resurface the road between Martin Highway and Martin Downs Boulevard, along with adding bike lanes and improving the swales for improved storm water management. The proposed CRA work was supposed to form the groundwork for additional progress toward the town center design, a plan to make Mapp more pedestrian friendly and downtown like. Haddox and Smith supported that proposed CRA project last year. Last July the commission approved the engineering department’s proposal to do just the resurfacing and adding bike lanes, which is largely funded by a $255,000 Small County Outreach Program grant from the state through the Martin County Metro-

Mark Pallazo, chairman, said the advisory committee has studied and discussed Mapp Road for years. He urged Rauth to discuss the proposed work as the design progresses. “I’d love to see engineering make recommendations back to the (advisory committee),” he said.

Young photographer aims high and sets sights on career STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — Ben Szentpaly started his first business when he was in 9th grade at Martin County High School. He customized computers and shipped them around the world, building a loyal following. He continued this business until 11th grade, when he decided to pursue another of his passions, photography and videography. Szentpaly took one year of photography at Martin County, as well as four years of television production, under the tutelage of Mr. Younglove. A dual enrollment student at IRSC, Szentpaly just graduated from Martin County and has one more year at IRSC, where he is majoring in marketing and economics. He is just 18 and is already the owner of Bszent Photography. As you might expect, Szentpaly has big dreams. First, he’ll finish his education at one of the Florida state schools. “I hope to start a video production company on a larger scale, with employees,” he said. “I’m just starting the business. I’ll do weddings, portraits and group birth-
day parties. My favorite photography is taking pictures in nature, of the outdoors. I don’t like using a studio or anything artificial.” Szenpaly likes taking sports pictures and hopes to build a wedding clientele, especially as so many Florida weddings take place outdoors. “I’m friends with a couple of wedding planners,” he said. “I’m crossing my fingers.” The young entrepreneur, the son of Keren Carmel of Palm City, likes photo journalism and produces his own news stories for YouTube and Facebook. He still builds computers and does in-home computer consulting, plays soccer and tennis and works at Publix in Palm City on Sunday. While Szentpaly loves photography and videography, he leans towards the latter. He has, in fact, won awards for his videography. Martin County High School entered the Florida Scholastic Press association event in Orlando in May 2016. Szentpaly was one of a team of three that was given a project to submit in three hours. The news team won Best of the Best for Florida public service announcements and Szentpaly, who had submitted a videography reel of his best shots, edited, with

time with all his pursuits. “I like what I do,” he said. “I do it for fun.
