TREASURE COAST — The fifth annual revived Stuart Sailfish Regatta will be the big fish in the pond this weekend, May 21 and 22. About 70 boat racers from all over the country and parts of Canada will converge on the St. Lucie River to race 12 classes at speeds exceeding 150 mph. on a 1.1-mile oval track. What spectators will watch from the Stuart Causeway — Southeast Ocean Boulevard — is more than speed. They’ll watch friends making memories with their families. Palm City’s Matt O’Connor is a third-generation boat racer. He’ll be back with Gator, his boat, after a near catastrophe last year. A change in engines pushed boats in his class, the 5-liter hydroplane, to new speeds. That combined with an unfortunate wind that started tearing O’Connor’s boat apart around him. He said racing is all about friends and family. He’s going against racers that have been his friends since childhood. “I met these guys when I was younger than (my 7-year-old daughter),” he said. PALM CITY — Amblin Max didn’t take his first jump until he was 10. In 2013, Diane Andersen of Palm City purchased the quarter horse and brought him to trainer Cindy Reddish of Savannah Pines Equestrian Center, also in Palm City. Max was awarded the 2015 Progressive Working Hunter High Point Champion by the American Quarter Horse Association. It’s

an amazing accomplishment for Max and Reddish, and for Andersen, who saw something in the horse. “Max is a beautiful horse,” Andersen said. “I saw him and Cindy liked the way he moved. He looked like he had a lot of potential and he has a sweet and gentle nature.” Max only started jumping under Reddish’s tutelage. Then Andersen and Reddish started showing him in quarter horse shows. “You get points for where

Old Palm City ‘Ripple’ Eco-Art Project recommended for national arts grant FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PALM CITY — This week, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced 64 awards totaling $4.3 million supporting projects across the nation through the NEA’s Our Town program. Martin County’s Old Palm City “Ripple” Eco-Art Project, a project located within the Old Palm City Community Redevelopment Area, has been recommended for a grant award of $50,000 to support design. Martin County will reconnect the Old Palm City neighborhood with the St. Lucie River at three distinct sites, using a series of artist designed elements such as rain gardens, hydro sculptures, and other devices to manage polluted stormwater. The project is a partnership between Martin County Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) and the Arts Council of Martin County, and will engage artist Lucy Keshavarz of Art & Culture Group to develop the project with significant citizen input and com-

munity outreach. These art features will create green infrastructure, public spaces and improve community education about the importance of our waterways in Old Palm City. The project will improve the quality of this CRA community through providing opportunities for public interactions, water quality improvement, and improved wildlife habitat. “The Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee looks forward to working on developing a project that both helps our environment and is aesthetically pleasing for the residents of our community,” said Mark Palazzo, chairman of the Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee. “Ripple” will make visible the community’s connection to water and the water quality impact of humans on the St. Lucie River, which is part of the larger Indian River Lagoon system, the most diverse estuarine environment in North America. For decades, the estuary has been affected by factors including natural

The NEA Our Town grant program supports creative place-making projects that help

to transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places with the arts at their core. The NEA received 240 applications for Our Town this year, and awards range from $25,000 to $100,000.

REGATTA from page 1 started back in the 1960s. It was around for a couple decades, then just kind of disappeared. O’Connor was one of the racers who helped revive the regatta. It launched for its second run in 2012. That year it was a hit. Despite lingering national and local economic problems, the revived regatta drew about 12,000 the first year. It’s grown from there. O’Connor used to watch his father race in the regatta’s first run starting in the ‘70s. “We attended the Stuart Sailfish Regatta every year up until they went away,” O’Connor said. His grandfather started racing in the 1940s. But, back to Gator shredding around O’Connor last year. He’s had a bunch of work to do to be ready for the upcoming race. “I did an awful lot of damage to it and were finishing up repairs,” he said. O’Connor added, “I spend a lot of evenings, nights, weekends getting everything together. We should be competitive.” O’Connor said no matter what place he gets, he’ll win the Sailfish Regatta, and every other racer feels that way. For him, racing is about time with his daughter and his friends.

Wardell of Port St. Lucie at the Stuart Sailfish Regatta last year on the Indian River Lagoon. This year’s event takes place Saturday and Sunday May 21 and 22. “It’s she and I,” O’Connor said. “She ends up on the deck of the boat (when I’m working on it) and it’s that quality time we spend together.” And then there are those guys he met when he was a kid sitting on his father’s boat. “It’s seeing all your friends you’ve known for 30 plus years,” he said. The regatta will launch at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Spectators

will gather on the Stuart Causeway, which will be closed to traffic. Shuttles will run from Witham Field, at 2011 S.E. Airport Rd, Stuart. Heats will continue until about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The races will continue on Sunday, again at 9 a.m., and continue until about 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the day will be $17 at the gates. In addition to the races, there’ll be a KidZone, sponsored by the

Boating safety awareness week

W

e are fortunate to live in a community blessed with abundant and beautiful waterways. Whether you enjoy the ocean, the lake, our smaller waterways, our aquatic paradise has much enjoyment to offer. Our beautiful natural resources provide endless fishing and boating opportunities, but with those opportunities come a need for personal responsibility and good safety practices. Not surprisingly, Florida is one of the top states for recreational boating, with nearly 900,000 registered vessels and up to 1 million non-registered small craft. Unfortunately, we rank high for boating accidents as well. The 2014 data published by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission detailed 634 boating accidents resulting in 365 injuries statewide. Sixty-four of those were fatal accidents resulting in seventy-three deaths. Twenty-eight percent of those deaths were caused when boaters fell overboard. The leading cause of death, according to that report, was drowning. The most alarming piece of information from that report is

YOUR

William D. Snyder, Sheriff that 82 percent of the operators involved in those fatal accidents had no formal boater education. Florida’s current boating education law applies to boaters born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, and applies only to those who operate a motorized vessel of 10-horsepower or greater. For anyone else, those safety courses are optional. We cannot account for why someone refuses to take a safe boating course before they head

VIEW

out on the water. What we can do is encourage people to do so, not just for themselves, but for their loved ones and for other boaters who share the water. There are a number of places in Martin County where safe boater courses are offered. A great resource is the FWC website at myfwc.com. We can tell you from recent events and water rescues in Martin County that the most important items to have on your boat are life-saving devices. Life vests are clearly the number one item, especially if you have children with you. GPS and communication devices also rank high on the safety check-list. Even though you may have safety equipment, it is a good idea to maintain the items, and double check their functionality before heading out. It takes a few minutes to do so, and could prove to

be extremely valuable. The Martin County Sheriff’s Marine Unit works closely with FWC and the United States Coast Guard. They all serve a valuable role on the water, which goes beyond just enforcement. Our marine officers work to keep citizens safe. We are saddened when we must participate in recover efforts for someone lost at sea. Please, you owe it to yourself and your family to be a safe and responsible boater. Summer is upon us, and I hope everyone takes advantage of everything Martin County has to offer, but be safe so you have plenty of good stories to share about your summer with your family and friends. Sheriff William D. Snyder was sworn in as Martin County’s 8th Sheriff on January 8, 2013. His career in law enforcement spans over three decades, beginning in 1973. TREASURE COAST — Drop a dime in the water from the Stuart Causeway and the ripple goes to Volusia County. The Indian River Lagoon reaches more than 150 miles northward from Martin and cuts a swath through five counties with several towns and cities along the way. There’re also common water-quality issues along the way. At its last regular meeting, the Port St. Lucie City Council approved a resolution joining the Indian River Lagoon Regional Compact. Councilman Ron Bowen said he hopes the move helps avoid a repeat of history he witnessed. “I come from Cleveland, Ohio,” he said at the meeting. “I saw a river die.” The Cuyahoga River famously caught fire several times from the

late 1800s due to industrial and other pollution. Additionally, there were stretches of the river devoid of aquatic life. A 1969 fire on the river was a seminal moment in the environmental-protection movement. Bowen said he’s seeing — albeit on a smaller scale — similar pattern with the St. Lucie and Indian rivers to what he witnessed in Ohio. He said everyone knows what the issues are and many solutions for fixing them. On the human side, the issues aren’t knowledge, he said. It’s political will. “I wouldn’t put my toes in the Indian River right now,” Bowen said. He added, “You can’t put an economic value on clean water, and I would not want to see a second river die in my life.” Port St. Lucie was the fourth area city to join the compact, according

LAGOON from page 8 to Patricia Christenson, executive director of the Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities. At press time, others that had joined were Stuart, Sewall’s Point, and Ocean Breeze. “All of the cities on the Treasure Coast will be considering it in the next couple weeks,” Christenson said in an interview. The compact carries no regulatory or taxing provisions. It’s an agreement among cities to increase their collective political voice to seek federal and state funding and assistance for efforts to clean the elongated lagoon. Port St. Lucie’s mayor, Greg Oravec, said in an interview after the meeting that what makes the compact new is its reach all along the lagoon. “The compact is between the Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities and the Space Coast League of Cities,” Oravec said. “The Volusia League (of Cities) is going to join it.” The regional leagues are part of the Florida League of Cities. The Treasure Coast league includes cities and towns in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. “You could say there are a number of people working on important challenges (facing the Indian River Lagoon), but they’re in pockets,” Oravec said. “They’re disconnected from each other in silos.” He said the compact will help connect Indian River events and efforts in, say, New Smyrna Beach to those in Palm City, where water from Lake Okeechobee discharges enter the St. Lucie River and head to the Indian River Lagoon. “It’s bringing everyone together to work on the Indian River Lagoon,” Oravec said. Resident Mark Gotz spoke at the meeting questioning whether the compact was as great a value to Port St. Lucie as it’s trumpeted to be. “I know the Indian River Lagoon has been one of the hot items here since I moved here 12 years ago,” he said. “It seems we’re continually throwing money at it to get it

fixed.” The spending, he said, isn’t necessarily a problem. The problem to Gotz was accountability for those dollars spent and any source for data to measure the bang for the buck. “We never get any conclusion to know where the money is,” he said. Oravec had little patience for Gotz’s case. “It would be easy to go point-bypoint refuting all of those arguments,” the mayor said at the meeting. In the interview, Christenson said with Volusia joining the Space and Treasure coasts, there’ll be about 40 municipalities working on getting funding for the Indian River Lagoon cleanup efforts. That could speed things such as funding for septic-tank removals along with lagoon, she said. “That’s a louder voice when trying to get funding from Tallahassee,” Christenson said. The compact, she said, helps reduce competition among the cities for those state and federal funds, too. “It made more sense to be working together for funding as this issue progresses for the next 15, 20 years, rather than all banging their heads for the same pot of money,” Christenson said. She said municipalities that join aren’t getting themselves onto budget hooks as some seem to fear. “A lot of questions came up as to the funding,” Christenson said. “Was this going to require the municipalities to fund projects? The answer is, ‘No.’” Oravec said in the interview that the compact affects everyone living in the nearly 120-square-mile Port St. Lucie, even those on the western sides. “The Indian River Lagoon is really part of the foundation of the quality of life on the Treasure Coast,” he said. “Its health is the health of our community. You can’t disassociate the two. Even if you live in Tradition, PGA Village, St. Lucie West, you’re very much physically connected to the Indian River Lagoon.”

HIBISCUS from page 6 families to develop healthy, non-abusive relationships. Sandy (name changed to protect privacy) was referred to the SATP as she was a victim of sexual abuse, and her mother also referred herself to treatment as a Non-Offending Caregiver. Sandy disclosed that she was abused when she was a young girl by a family friend, but it took her many years to tell what happened to her. It was only when she heard another girl’s story about what she had experienced that she was then able to put a name to it — sexual abuse. Sandy was able to talk about the abuse for the first time and later shared her story with her mother. The process of being in therapy allowed healing to begin within the family and ignited a mother’s passion to advocate for victims of sexual abuse. Sandy is no longer a victim, but now a SURVIVOR. You can help us help them through the Hibiscus From Victim to Survivor Campaign. Mental health is the foundation for individual well-being and the effective functioning of a community. he was the reserve champion. “We knew we had somebody special,” Andersen said.” The two will take the horse to Atlanta again and to shows in Florida. Both will ride Max. Andersen may well take him to the Select World competition, a show in Amarillo, Texas for riders over 50. Andersen met Reddish seven years ago. Andersen joined a group of women who rode on Tuesday nights and took some private lessons because she wanted to jump. “She told me the person helping her quit,” Andersen said. “I didn’t know anything but I said I’d help with the barn. I help with the barn and she helps with Max. She’s a wonderful person. It started as a job, but it’s not a job anymore. She’s done well on a lot of horses here. Cindy does a lot for the community and is very well-known in the quarter horse community. For her part, Reddish enjoys working with the horse. “He has a really good expression,” she said. “His ears are up and he carries himself real steady-eddy, He doesn’t switch his tail or move his head and neck. He’s very focused. He has a good temperament, laid back and even lazy. He’s a good mover

He looks like a large pony.” Reddish said the award was completely unexpected. “It was surprising because we were not trying to achieve that award,” she said. ”It just kind of came because he was such a nice horse. He won quite a few classes in a row in Atlanta and that was his turning point.” Max’s success comes at a good time for Andersen. She recently had to put down her horse, Dutch, an animal she‘d had since he was 3. His real name was All Inspiring. “He took me places I could never imagine going,” Andersen said. “He inspired me.” Now she has Max, who has taught her a valuable lesson: it’s never too late to learn something new. Photo courtesy of the Barn Theatre Campers at Camp Barn Theatre study acting, stagecraft, directing, set design and more as they prepare for two productions at the end of camp. Camp Barn Theatre returns this summer after a one-year hiatus. Rosemary Knight will be the primary instructor, assisted by Althea Wilson, who has taught theater on the college level. Knight said that the day will start with theater games and specific lessons in all areas of the theater. “They’ll have sessions together and then break into groups with specialized instruction in things like auditions, stage management, characterization and make up, with more personalized instruction (in the smaller groups.) In the afternoon of the first week we’ll have

theater games and discussions of the plays. At the end of the first week, we’ll have auditions. In weeks 2-4, the afternoons will be rehearsals. One of the things I’d like to do is immerse the kids in all areas of play production. Kids that are in one show will be working behind-the-scenes in the other.” Knight noted that there is only a five-year age difference between the youngest and oldest campers, as Camp Barn Theatre focuses on middle and high school students. Still, the program is flexible about

the content and depth of instruction. “It depends on the age breakdown and skill levels,” she said. “We can tailor it to the more advanced or the more basic. With a mix, we may split it that way.” Camp Barn Theatre will take place at the Barn Theatre, 2400 S.E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart. For more information about Camp Barn Theatre, visit the website www. barn-theatre.com. Tickets for the productions Aug. 5-7 are available there or by calling the box office at (772) 287-4884.

STUART — Camp Barn Theatre is back! After a year’s hiatus, the popular camp has returned for summer 2016. The camp, for those entering 6th through 10th grades, will run from July 11-Aug. 7 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Campers will learn about the basics of theater, including acting, directing, set design, stage craft, stage management and the business of theater, while rehearsing two plays that will be presented on the weekend of Aug. 5. Campers will perform in the plays and work behind-thescenes while taking classes taught by professional theater educators and industry guest speakers. Camp Barn Theatre is directed by Rosemary Knight, who said that campers will present two original one-act plays during the weekend of Aug. 5. Both plays: “The Misadventures of Cinderella,” and “Rumpelstiltskin,” were written by local college student Samantha Knight and both are spoofs on popular fairy tales. Knight is an English major at the University of Florida and a writer and performer in the University’s Theater Strike Force group. She has written a number of plays for local theater groups, including Camp Barn Theatre. The daughter of Rosemary Knight, she will serve as a junior instructor and head counselor.

Taste of the Tropics returns to Treasure Coast Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Mamney sapotes generally aren’t by the bananas at grocery stores. Jabuticaba isn’t common, either. These exotic fruits grow on the Treasure Coast, however. Taste of the Tropics is returning to the Treasure Coast with fruits galore to give those with adventurous taste buds a sampling of what they can grow here. “The thrust of it is to expose people to some of the rare fruit out there we grow in South Florida,” Mark Worden, master gardener, said. “Our goal is to promote horticulture and agriculture.” Taste of the Tropics took a year off in 2015. It’s been around since 1986. Worden said many try growing more conventional fruits in South Florida that just aren’t adapted to the climate here. He said adventurous gardeners on the Treasure Coast can have a deluge of delight focusing instead on fruits

such as the Barbados cherry. “It’s a small tree,” Worden said. “It looks kind of like a crepe myrtle.” And the fruit? “It does have a cherry-like taste to it,” he said. The beauty, besides the unusual cherry-like taste, is nutrition. “It has the highest concentration of vitamin C known to man,” Worden said. The Barbados cherry yields fruit from May to November in this area. Fortunately, Worden said, it produces lots of fruit, because having one in the yard is an ornithologist’s dream. “You’ll have to fight with the birds for a few of them,” Worden said. The Mamney sapote — that’s from Central America. Worden said cracked open it’ll remind you of a pumpkin pie. The jabuticaba? “That’s native to the Amazon River basin,” Worden said. “It’s unique in that it fruits along the trunk.” The fruits are similar to grapes,

giving the tree its nickname, the Brazilian grapetree. “They sort of have a musky taste to them,” Worden said. “I like them.” Worden said he enjoys watching people try the jackfruit for the first time. “It tastes like Juicy Fruit gum,” he said. “It’s delicious. “It’s a combination of mango, apple, everything. It’s indescribable.” The tree is from Asia and has the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. “They typically weigh 20 pounds, but they can get up to 80 pounds,” Worden said. Unusual fruits are so captivating to many that there’s a local club celebrating them — the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit Club. Worden is a member. He said once you get a taste for tropical fruits … well, you want to taste more. “I have over 50 different varieties of fruit in my yard,” Worden said. “I have six different varieties of mango in the yard, so I can enjoy

HUMANE SOCIETY

Pet of the week

Gumdrop Energetic and playful, I am a strapping year old lad who wishes to be your one and only. I will do best in a fenced-in yard where I can exercise and lots of fun. I cannot wait to shower all of my 70 lbs. of affection on my new active and forever family.

Additionally, master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. For more about Taste of the Tropics, call the extension office at (772) 288-5654, or visit www.martin.ifas.ufl.edu. For more about the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit Club, visit www.treasurecoastrarefruitclub.com.

Not only am I a 1-1/2 year-old beauty of velvety soft grey and white fur but also a 7 lb. love muffin. I so enjoy cuddling, window gazing, and playing with my toys. You’ll be enchanted with my exquisite green eyes and long white whiskers.

Born and raised in New England, as a young boy, I used to visit my grandparents, who moved from Southern Vermont to Port Saint Lucie (Sandpiper Bay) in 1982. Coming from the bitter cold, I vowed I would live in Florida when I grew up. I am, now, fortunate enough to be able to raise my own family in the very house I used to visit as a child, with Grammy and Gramps shining down on us from above. At Hometown Financial Services, LLC. , as a Mortgage Broker, I have access to loan products for almost every situation, to approve almost everyone.
