PALM CITY — Last September, when Costco was readying an application to build on Martin Highway near the Turnpike, Samantha Capaldo, a business graduate and Palm City mother, started a Facebook page called “Stop Costco at 714 and High Meadow,” insisting that the proposed development was in the wrong spot. Now, the forum has more than 1,700 Facebook members, and several community action campaigns have taken shape from it. It has spawned a Go Fund Me account that aims to raise funds for a private traffic study in counterpoint to Costco’s. There is also a Change.org petition with 830 supporters that the group hopes will represent public interest to Growth Management. There are buttons, bumper stickers, and soon to be T-shirts. Kelly Middleton, a teacher at Bessey Creek who has lived in Palm City for 22 years, says the group has grown exponentially over the last six months, sometimes adding 100 members in a single night. It’s not just about stopping Costco in Palm City, she says. “It’s about trying to preserve the way of life as we have come to love it here.” “There has to be change,” says Middleton, “and it’s hard to accept, but this just doesn’t fit with Palm City. It’s too big. So I decided that I could sit back and complain, or I could try and do something. Either I was going to have to expend my efforts moving or fight this, and I chose to fight.” Costco plans to develop a

MARTIN COUNTY — The County Commission got project priority lists from the Community Redevelopment Agency’s seven Neighborhood Advisory committees at its March 22 meeting. Now it wants some price tags and innovative ways to pay for wanted redevelopment projects. “(The County Commission) directed us to move forward with some funding options,” Kate Parmelee, the county’s community and strategic partnerships manager, said. Palm City has a community redevelopment area that runs along Mapp Road, between Martin Downs and All American boulevards. It extends eastward to the St. Lucie River, and has a western extension on Martin Highway. The commission also sits as the county’s Community Redevelopment Agency. The community redevelopment areas have been a contentious issue with the

commission since last year. Critics complain that the funding for projects in the community redevelopment areas — called Tax Increment Financing, which is a portion of property taxes paid in the areas — unfairly siphons money from other taxpayers during a time when the county is about $250 million behind on infrastructure maintenance. Supporters say the proposed redevelopment projects are usually important to storm water management and have been discussed since the early 2000s. Among long-awaited redevelopment projects is the Mapp Road Town Center Design, which is aimed at making Mapp more pedestrian-friendly and downtown-like. The concept has been through numerous updates and changes over the last 15 years. Last year, commissioners Ed Fielding, Sarah Heard and Anne Scott voted to remove preliminary redevelopment work on Mapp from the county’s capital improvement plan. Commis-

The need for speed — rolling with it Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — Jamison Geisler has plans for this summer. He’s heading to the 79th annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships at the epicenter of the gravity-powered racing world, Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. That’ll be July 10 to 16. “I hope to be world champion in Akron,” Jamison said. “I’ll get a college scholarship and a trophy almost as tall as me.” Jamison is the standing campion of the Stuart Soap Box Derby, which was at the end of last year. It’s sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Martin County. The 9-year-old is a third grader at Bessey Creek Elementary School. The Kiwanis Club of Martin has a rally race coming up on May 21 at the Earnest Lyons Bridge, Stuart. That race will include stock, super stock and masters. It’ll be held in conjunction with the 2016 Stuart Sailfish Regatta. The Kiwanis figure about 30 racers will show to accumulate

“I like hanging out with my friends and learning about gravity and spacing and how the cars are built.” Jamison Geisler points in their sport. They’ll race from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s not just the need for speed that drives Jamison’s love for the soap box. “I like hanging out with my friends and learning about gravity and spacing and how the cars are built,” he said. Yeah, he’s into the STEM — the science, technology, engineering and math. Along with the camaraderie. “I also like the sportsmanship,” Jamison said. “To me it’s fair, because no one brags. You say, ‘Good race’ and shake hands.” Still, speed is a factor in gravity-powered racing. Like everything, the technology is getting better, and the cars are getting faster. On some courses they reportedly reach into the mid-30s. Doesn’t sound like much, but do

‘A’ for April Autism Awareness Month

s I completed the half marathon at the Marathon of the Treasure Coast on March 6, the audience was completely silent. No one slapped my shoulder as accolade, or tried to high-five me. Everyone stepped back as I crossed the finish line. It wasn’t that people weren’t proud of my accomplishment, running 13.1 miles. It was that Marisa Cook announced that a runner with autism was arriving at the finish and to please remain silent and refrain from touching him. If you were there, thanks for giving me the perfect quiet finish to my first half marathon. I have high-functioning autism, which is also known as Asperger syndrome. Noise is my nemesis. Touch is a torment. Motion around me is a misery. Crowds are cacophony. Autism is from the Greek word autos, meaning “self.” The word was around since the beginning of the 20th century, but Dr. Leo Kanner was, arguably, the first to use it to describe a group of children he was studying who seemed to have little wish or

need for social interactions. What Kanner — and the man who first medically described autism, Hans Asperger — saw in the children went beyond normal introversion. They seemed not to notice other children around them.

McCallister, a high-functioning autistic, ran the half-marathon with their help. The Davises and Cook quieted race fans and escorted him through crowds. Like most autistics, McCallister is easily overwhelmed by sound and motion. He completed the 13.1-mile race, his first half-marathon, in 2:11:17 and is planning on his first marathon in Cocoa later this year. Friends have volunteered to help him at that marathon. Back to the marathon day, I had a support team versed with the sensory problems of autism — Doug and Lyndsay Davis, along with Cook. Additionally, the organizer, Frank Fender, made

Answer: A ladder workout is a method of training where you perform one or more exercises with an ascending and/or descending repetition pattern. Beginner ladder workouts typically include only one exercise, while advanced ladder workouts include two or three exercise linked together (one after another with little rest in between). A sample beginner ladder workout would be performing one push up, then taking a 15-second rest and repeating this sequence adding one rep all the way to five and then descending back down for a total or 25 pushups. A more advanced example of a ladder workout could include

three exercises such as pull-ups, squats and abdominal crunches. You would perform one pull-up, two squats, and three crunches followed by a 30-second rest. Moving up the ladder, you would then perform two pull-ups, four squats, and six crunches before resting another 30 seconds. Repeat the sequence 4-6 times increasing reps with each ladder and then work your way back down the ladder by decreasing the number of reps for each exercise. Ladder workouts can build strength and endurance, as well as provide variety in your workouts. Question: I drink a vanilla or chocolate protein shake every day. I like the taste, but I’d like to add some flavor without adding too many extra calories. Can you suggest some simple add-in ingredients that I could buy at

MARTIN COUNTY — In correspondence received last week, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) responded to Martin County’s concerns regarding the antiquated Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway Bridge over the St. Lucie River and the potential impacts to navigation that may be created as a result of the proposed All Aboard Florida (AAF) passenger rail project. The County provided recommendations and data as part of the USCG’s process of establishing new operating rules for the bridge. Martin County’s concerns were based on expected increases in freight rail traffic and the proposed addition of high speed passenger rail that would travel across the antiquated FEC Railway Bridge, built circa 1938. It is the only movable bridge along the rail route that is to remain single-tracked under the proposed AAF project. The bridge is a half-mile choke-point that could have serious, negative impacts on maritime operations and the contiguous communities on land, and create railroad pressure to keep the bridge closed to navigation as much as possible. As a result of Martin County’s input, however, the USCG is now considering the addition of an onsite bridge tender at the FEC Railway Bridge. The USCG

Ciampi said the District 5 race comes with a twist. “District 5 is a unique race,” he said. “All three candidates are one-term commissioners. What the voting public will get an opportunity to do is judge us on the record of our accomplishments, or lack thereof.” Something Haddox and Melzer said their eager to do, too. Haddox — who used to manage the county’s Veteran Services — was elected in 2012, during a year when voters were ready to switch things up. He was generally seen as part of a commission shakeup. He’s been the most reliable swing vote on the commission. He said the county commission race is early on, but seems to be warming. Still, Haddox said, it’s not boiling yet. “All in all I think the interest is higher than it would normally be,” he said. Haddox’s first challenger was Ciampi. He jumped into the race back in November, shortly after

Haddox announced his reelection bid. Ciampi was in office between 2008 and 2012. He gave up the seat to run for run for Clerk of Court, which he lost. Melzer joined the race a few months later. To Martin County politicos, she needs no introduction. Melzer has likely logged more time in public comment at commission meetings than anyone else in the county. She’d won the District 5 seat in the 1996 election by a commanding 37,000 votes to 12,500 her Democratic rival garnered. However, the 2000 election was decided in a universal primary. Michael DiTerlizzi edged Melzer out of the seat with 55 percent of 28,400 ballots cast. He’s now on the Martin County School Board and in a reelection bid for the seat. Melzer said she, too, thinks interest in the race is higher than usual for this early on in an election and believes that augurs an intense election ahead. “I think it’s starting to warm up,” Melzer said. “There are huge issues.” Melzer pointed to — among other things—the proposed high-speed train, All Aboard Florida, and continued degradation of local waterways as issues generating

voter interest. On those issues, it’ll be difficult for the candidates to get sunlight between one another. All oppose All Aboard Florida and want to see Lake Okeechobee discharges stopped. However, there’re issue that’ll be easy for them to magnify difference, such as the future of the Community Redevelopment Agency and how best to move forward with the pricey septic-to-sewer proposals. The District 1 race — Jensen Beach — includes incumbent Doug Smith, and challengers Henry Copeland and Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch. The District 3 race — Hobe Sound — also has an incumbent, Anne Scott, along with challengers Darlene Fuggetta and Harold Jenkins. Angela Hoffman, executive director of the Hobe Sound Chamber, said the forum will be free and questions created by voters. “There’s an opportunity for a Q and A and we’re asking the public to submit the questions ahead of time,” she said. of the opposition have attended commissioners’ meetings, Local Planning Agency (LPA) meetings, and any assembly where Costco is represented, such as the Jan. 21 joint workshop where the applicant met with county staff. They have also broadened their platform to include any development that thematically links to their mission of slow growth for Palm City. At the February Local Planning Agency meeting, where a developer was seeking land use redesignation and rezoning for a 3.75-acre property right across Martin Highway from Hidden Oaks Middle School, Stop Costco called out the cavalry. They feel their public comments helped influence the agency’s concession to commercial/ office/residential (COR) designation for the property, instead of the more intense commercial limited designation the applicant was requesting. Ed Ciampi, candidate for District 5 commissioner and former president of The Estates at Hammock Creek Homeowners’ Association, commends the group for their passion and community mobility. “I’m proud of the level of organization and enthusiasm that the opposition has taken,” he says. “Many times you’d see projects that people didn’t like, but no one would step up and challenge things. It definitely makes for a much fairer process when both sides have a voice. Do I think that Costco will be deterred? Probably not. But I do think that bringing this level of scrutiny and attention to the project is the best course of action they could have taken, so that everything is handled the way it’s supposed to.” Ciampi says that perhaps the biggest challenge the group may face is the silent constituency that favors Costco in that location. “Most often people who are supporting something, especially something controversial, don’t have to stand up at meetings and take on the ears of their neighbors and friends,” he says. “They are just quietly for it. They’re not organizing Facebook pages saying, “We love Costco.’” Their successes haven’t exactly come easily, however. One disappointing aspect of the political

Ed Ciampi process in Palm City is that there isn’t a proper Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC), Capaldo says. Excepting a slender NAC devoted to defunct Old Palm City, residents don’t have the same official representation that towns like Port Salerno and Rio have. Regardless of the outcome of the Costco application, Capaldo says that in the future they will be looking to promote and organize such a committee. Costco submitted their official application on Oct. 19 and were sent back to the drawing board by Growth Management in December. Their resubmittal deadline has been extended to May 13. Other than that, no news has surfaced regarding the application. Until it does, Stop Costco at 714 plans to send out as many letters as possible to the commissioners and relevant city staff decrying the proposal as a bad move. Once their Change.org petition acquires 1,000 signatures, says Middleton, they hope that might indicate to the Local Planning Agency, which will have to evaluate the application before it goes to the Board of Commissioners, that their opposition is not just a whistle in the wind. Summing up the effort, Gray says, “I think the group has done a good job at communicating that it’s not a done deal. A lot of people out there think this is a done deal, that you can’t stop Costco, and there’s also the population that’s totally unaware of it. The group seems to get more vocal as time goes on and more confident in their argument.” He adds that amidst all the recent efforts to combat All Aboard Florida and the Lake Okeechobee discharges, Stop Costco’s at 714’s cause hits closest to home, being the only cause that distinctly addresses a Palm City issue.

152,661-square-foot store between the Turnpike and High Meadow on 714, a 16-pump gas station, and a .93-acre out-parcel for future use. This will undoubtedly change the very fabric of this small bedroom community, says Jim Serra, a retired cop who has lived here for 13 years. He has done his part by proliferating Stop Costco at 714 bumper stickers and car magnets, the proceeds of which are also going to the traffic study. Serra, who worked in New York City for 24 years, says he has experienced the sort of traffic Costco will probably invite to Palm City. “I worked in midtown Manhattan for most of my career, and I know what it’s like to have congestion and too many people in one place at one time. One of the reasons I picked Palm City was because of its tranquil atmosphere, the fact that there’s not a lot of industry here and no big-box stores.” The already sluggish traffic along Martin Highway, combined with the intensity of Costco’s proposal, has made traffic a key concern for the opposition group. Jon Gray, a Palm City resident of 15 years, who in January conducted informal traffic counts at the Costco on Northlake and the Sam’s Club in Port St. Lucie, says that he plans to continue his traffic counts to get a clearer idea of what the trip numbers actually are, instead of

relying on sand-shifting reports from Costco. He counted 800 cars enter the Northlake Costco within an hour, around the time that schools in Palm City would be releasing students. Gray says that he would like to conduct a new study as well. In response to all the rezoning signs germinating along Martin Highway, he has decided to document all of the vacant office buildings that squat like carbuncles along the city’s thoroughfares. He plans to go out and take photographs to show to the commissioners and Growth Management. Serra says that the rapid growth of the group’s concerted efforts is in large part due to their use of social media. “I think social media has helped a lot, because it’s a place where people can go to share the same views on a subject matter. If you go back 15 or 20 years and tried to organize something like this, you’d have a hard time getting in touch with people who may be of the same mind as you.” But in-the-field demonstrations have also been indispensable to the movement. A couple of weeks ago, Stop Costco at 714 held a rally at the intersection of Martin Downs and 714, where Costco intends to build, and received several favorable honks, thumbs up, and regional news coverage. The bugle has also been sounded at county meetings. Since November, many frontrunners

CRA from page 2 sioners John Haddox and Doug Smith voted to keep it. Fielding, Heard and Scott moved the redevelopment agency toward helping to fund large scale septic to sewer conversions, including in Old Palm City. The move has been unpopular with the Neighborhood Advisory committees. At the meeting, Parmelee said the Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee requested restoring the Mapp Road work, and putting conversion of septic tanks in parts of Palm City as a lower priority. After the meeting, Haddox said

DERBY from page 3 that speed with your head about two feet off the ground. It looks a lot faster there. Jamison’s description of the experience is succinct. “Fun, but kind of scary at the same time,” he said. Jamison said gravity-powered racers start to notice things as their speed increases. The track starts looking narrower. Then there’s the bane for all racers — walls. The faster you’re going, the bigger and closer those start looking, he said. Once they’re going, gravity-powered racers can’t help but to start going over those pre-race checks. Rather, they start wondering if they did them right. “A tire can come off in midrace if it doesn’t have a pin,” Jamison said. The soap-box derby is in Jamison’s blood. His father, J.D. Geisler, is vice president of the Martin County Kiwanis, and an old soap box racer himself. “I did this when I was a kid with my father,” Geisler said. “We built the car.” Back then racers picked up designs and some components from local General Motors dealerships, then headed to the

likely nothing will happen with the redevelopment areas until after elections. There are three commission seats up for election, including his. So far the nine announced candidates are all Republican. If no others get into the races, they’ll be decided in universal primaries in August. Haddox said the commission majority directing Parmelee to get price tags on multiple proposed projects was about political savvy, not practical government. “I believe it is a delaying tactic and I’m very pessimistic if the Neighborhood Advisory Committees — if their voices are going to be heard,” he said.

lumber yard. Today racers order them online. “My son, he had to build his car and he really did build that car with my guidance, and it took him about six hours to build it,” Geisler said. Jamison wasn’t a racing prodigy. “He started off with about 18 losses,” Geisler said. “He didn’t even get a place in a number of races.” But he started grasping aerodynamics. ‘His driving style improved and he got lower in the car,” Geisler said. With improved art and science to his gravity-powered driving, Jamison started winning. The Kiwanis of Martin work with Hibiscus Children’s Center and Boys & Girls Club of Martin County to help develop young racers. There’s a hitch. “We have a limited number of cars, because our barn is not that big,” Geisler said. “We’re looking to build a permanent track and barn.” He said gravity-powered racing is fun, but, like Jamison said, it’s education. “This has a lot of STEM to it,” Geisler said.

my terms. Without their help, I couldn’t have done the run no matter how much training I did. April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, and many autism-related organizations celebrate April as Autism Awareness Month. There are organizations that help people with autism spectrum disorder on the Treasure Coast, such as Helping People Succeed, based in Stuart. The list of groups and organizations is sure to grow in the next few years as more people are becoming aware of autism’s many faces. So, what is autism? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it this way — “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.” OK, that’s not much to go on. How about I describe some of how autism affects my life. I wake and eat the exact same thing for breakfast every day, and I can’t feel normal if I don’t. People with autism can’t handle change very well. Remember the autistic savant Raymond Babbitt in the 1988 film “Rain Man”— “I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati.” “‘Course I got Jeopardy at five o’clock. I watch Jeopardy.” Exaggerated, but absolutely true about most autistics — we more than crave sameness; we must have it. While most reporters like to get out and meet the folks they’re talking to, I much rather call. The thought of meeting someone new unsettles me. For that matter, the thought of meeting someone I know unsettles me. Every time. Paying bills? As reasonably intelligent as I am, I’m a junior high kid when it comes to paying regular bills. I keep my list of bills I have to pay as small as possible. Autistics — even high functioning — typically have deficits in their executive functions, such as planning on paying bills. If something catches my interest, it has all of my attention. So much

of my attention that I can’t see or hear someone trying to get my attention. There’s a reason I’m single at 48. This is one of autism’s hardest qualities on others. But I can tell you way more about neutron stars than you want to know. I’ve told lots of people way more about things that interest me than they wanted to know. I can’t stop myself from telling people way more about things that interest me than they want to know. That’s because I can’t tell when people are done with those conversations, or more accurately when they’re done with my incessant monologues. You see, faces to me, and most autistics, may as well be robotic masks. We lack instinctual social understanding to read facial expressions to know when, for example, someone is bored. There are upsides to being autistic. I’m an accomplished autodidact. I doubt I ever really passed an English class in school. I never did a single term paper or written report. English and writing didn’t interest me before I was in my mid-20s. When writing did interest me, I rapidly learned it on my own well enough to become a journalist. Here’s why I’m telling you this — the CDC figures about one in 68 Americans have autism spectrum disorder. Others have numbers that go way across the board, from much lower to much higher. Many parents of non-verbal forms of autism think classifying me in the same spectrum minimizes what they’re children experience. I see their point. Others believe that one-in-68 is missing many who belong on the spectrum. I see their point, too. What I know is that I’m different from most and I need help to get through a half-marathon. “Peggy cared for our mom at home during a long illness so Mom could be with the family she loved. But in the final months when Mom’s condition got worse, her doctor recommended Treasure Coast Hospice. They provided expert care for Mom, supported our caregiving and guided the whole family. This was the relief we needed to enjoy time with Mom.”

TREASURE COAST — The Fur Seasons has set up a day of fun activities for dogs and their owners to benefit Palm City’s Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. There’ll be two obstacle courses appropriate for any size dog, small to “big-big-big.” Dogs can instantly learn and have a wonderful time. There’ll also be a no-jump clinic hosted by Stuart Pet Pals done repeatedly through the day. Movies will be shown indoors,

and there will be all-day swimming. There’ll also be a raffle with three great prizes and an auction to round out the event. The Humane Society will bring pets looking for adoption. The Run for Fun will be on Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Dogs who want to run the lure courses will pay $10 donations and swim tickets will also be available. The Fur Seasons is at 1310 S.W. Commerce Way, Stuart. For more, call (772) 286-8283.

time by being physically active, you’re buying time. The time you spend exercising now will come back to you later in the form of a longer, more active life. Also, the chances are good that you’ll save more time than you spend, because you’ll sleep better, be more rested, less stressed out and less distracted. All of this will help you to get more done in less time. My suggestion? Schedule your workouts, just like you would any other appointment. Give it a try. Schedule 30 minutes of exercise 3-5 times a week and see if you don’t feel more energetic and get more done than ever before. And remember, there is nothing on your to-do-list that is more important than YOU — and your HEALTH. About the Author Linda Lawrence is the owner of Anytime Fitness in Palm City. my local grocery store? Answer: Bananas, peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, vanilla extract, rolled oats, and many of your favorite fruits are easy add-in ingredients that will jazz up your protein shake. You can satisfy your sweet tooth and reduce post-workout inflammation with this chocolate and cherry combination: combine chocolate protein powder, 1 cup of skim milk, 1 banana, and a cup of fresh or frozen dark cherries. Of course, there’s nothing better than the perfect mix of chocolate and peanut butter to curb a craving: combine chocolate protein powder, 1 cup of skim milk, ½ banana, and 1 tbsp. of peanut butter. Vanilla protein powders also work well with a variety of fruits. Turn your shake into something you drink poolside by adding vanilla protein powder, 1 cup of coconut milk, 1 cup of frozen raspberries or pineapple and1 tsp. coconut extract for a tropical treat.

Breaking ground on new sanctuary FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PALM CITY — On March 18 the Treasure Coast Unitarian Universalist Congregation held a ground breaking ceremony for a new addition that includes a large sanctuary, a narthex and storage room. The current sanctuary is limited to approximately 1850 square feet of a 3060 square foot building and has room for only 105 persons. The new building will add a full 4410 square feet, with most of that area devoted to a sanctuary accommodating up to 250 people. The old sanctuary space is to be reconfigured as a Social Center with a commercial kitchen, a small meeting room and offices for both the minister and church secretary. All spaces are ADA (Americans with Disabilities) compliant and most areas will be available for rental for special events. The money for the new addition was donated by four major donors: David and Shirley Craig and Joan and Jim Henderson of Palm City; Vince and Enid Johnson and Vince and Phyllis Hall. One hundred people attended the ceremony including members of

the congregation, local dignitaries, representatives of the media and even those who were present at the original groundbreaking in 1999. Gail Irwin, of Palm City, gave a dedication at the recent ground breaking and is one of the founders of the church. Palm City resident and contractor for the new building is Ronnie Kirchman of Kirchman Construction. He is a well-known contractor in the Stuart area with offices on Delmar Street just off Dixie Highway. The contractor for the existing building was Manhattan Development Company, Inc. of Stuart operated by Rolf Gunther, a one-time NASCAR driver. The architect for the original building was Gary Kelly of Kelly & Kelly Architects who also serves as our current architect. The new addition is scheduled for completion in November, 2016. Volunteers take action to ‘Keep Martin Beautiful’ PALM CITY — With a mission to create and sustain a cleaner, greener, more beautiful community, Keep Martin Beautiful, a non-profit, volunteer based organization, is excited to announce the launch of the 2016 Great American Cleanup through the end of April. Along with other Keep America Beautiful affiliates across the nation, volunteers will be participating in various activities such as litter and marine debris removal, new community garden preparations, neighborhood landscaping and beautification, home repairs and painting, and household hazardous waste removal and new recycling initiatives. Now in its 18th year, the Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest community improvement program with more than 4 million volunteers in 20,000 communities across the nation taking action to create positive change and lasting

impact in their own neighborhoods. “People from all walks of life participate in our local Great American Cleanup, from civic clubs and school groups, to businesses and homeowner associations to families and retirees,” explained Keep Martin Beautiful President Craig Ahal. “Our goal is to help engage and mobilize large numbers of volunteers throughout Martin County who will be able to make impactful improvements around town.” This year’s new theme for the Great American Cleanup is “Clean Your Block Party.” This initiative provides best practices, activity ideas, and online toolkits to help volunteers coordinate a cleanup event on their own “block” of their neighborhood. In addition to the traditional road, beach, park, river and neighborhood cleanups, for more ways that volunteers can particulate in local Great American Cleanup activities in Martin County, visit keepmartinbeautiful.org.

PALM CITY – Amy Dolan Malaney has been coming to Palm City for a long time. Her parents, Bert and Pat Dolan, were among the early residents of Piper’s Landing and were involved in the building of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, where they donated the organ and one of the stained glass windows. Her mother was also choir director there for a short time. Now Malaney and her husband, Dennis, have purchased the home in which her parents lived for so many years. Malaney, who had a long professional career as a singer, including 21 years in the chorus of the Detroit Opera Company, sat down to talk about her career and the careers of her three daughters, who have followed in mom’s footsteps. She grew up in Chicago and attended DePauw University in Indiana, from which she got a degree in music education. She then attended the University of Illinois, and received a master’s degree in music performance. “I’ve done it all,” she said. “Music theater is my first love. “My mother was a singer and performed “Danny Boy” at every St. Patrick’s Day party. Malaney was in the first nation-

al tour of “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?” and is on the Broadway cast album. She worked in regional theater around the United States before her marriage, when she moved to Detroit and sang with the Detroit Opera Company and the Michigan Theatre Opera Company. She was also involved in the Detroit Opera’s community outreach program. This summer, she will return there for the second season to direct their operetta summer camp, performing Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Ruddigore.” She said the latter is a challenge. “It’s three weeks and you have no idea what you have (by way of a cast) until the first day of camp,” she said. You can’t cast for the first two or three days (while you audition) and then you have to produce a full operetta on the big stage.” While in Detroit, Malaney and her husband also raised three daughters, Mary, Patty and Maggie. Mary, who attended Ithaca College, is in New York City, Patty attended Point Park College in Pittsburgh and is in Chicago and Maggie is a musical theater major at Penn State. When we talked, the proud parents were preparing to go to New York, where Mary and Maggie were performing a cabaret act, “Sister Act,” at the Triad on 72nd St. in Manhattan.

Hypochondria mined for humor Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — If Tax Day gets you down, you might consider heading over to the Barn Theatre April 15 where they will present the comedy Norman Barasch and Carroll Moore comedy “Send Me No Flowers” through May 1. If the name of the play sounds familiar, you might remember the 1964 movie with Rock Hudson, Doris Day and Tony Randall. It is the story of George Kimball, a hypochondriac who overhears his doctor and becomes convinced he is dying. (He is not.) As a good husband, he puts his affairs in order, makes plans for his final resting place and proceeds to find a new husband for his wife, Judy. As is typical of Hudson-Day films, there are a lot of misunderstandings and a happy ending. John Procino is directing the production. He said that the play is based on a series of miscommunications, starting with George overhearing a conversation that convinces him that he is dying. “George overhears a conversation and thinks it’s about him,” Proci-

no said. “It’s the 1960s. He feels like he has been in charge of everything and Judy will need help to manage finances. She will need a man in her life for everything other than sex. There are several instances where he has fantasy scenes where he imagines scenarios of his wife out on the streets. He needs to find her another husband.” Of course, there are many more misunderstandings. The couple reconnect with a college buddy, Bert Powers, who is closer to Judy than to George. George decides he is a good candidate to be the next “Mr. Kimball.” “George decides he’s the best prospect and decides to cultivate a deeper friendship between Bert and Judy. He lets them go out (alone), saying he doesn’t feel good. The result is that Judy feels George is concealing a torrid love affair and assuaging his guilt.” It’s never a good idea to give away too much of the plot, and there is, indeed, a cemetery plot or two or three, a pushy cemetery plot salesman, and a friend, Arnold, who keeps trying to cheer George

MALANEY from page 29 “Mary has done quite a bit of cabaret,” Malaney said. “She has a great music director and twice a year, she writes a cabaret. Her sister, Maggie, was getting ready for Spring Break, and Mary said that instead of a vacation, come to New York and do cabaret together.” The entire family has been performing together for years, with the youngsters performing in the children’s chorus at the Opera House. They have also had wonderful opportunities separately. Maggie did “A Little Night Music” with Leslie Uggams and Mary performed with opera star Denyce Graves. They’ve had amazing opportunities,” Malaney said. “They grew up in the Opera House, but I made sure this is what they wanted to do. I told them that if they wanted

something else, they needed to consider it. They knew what they were in for. They’d seen me audition and not get the job and now they’re experiencing it. I’ve tried to prepare young people I’ve coached about the reality of it.” Malaney misses performing and is going to do some auditioning in New York for regional and stock theater. She has also noticed that there is a lot going on in this area, with audiences that seem to embrace the arts. She is taking tap dancing at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Conservatory and would like to perform and teach on the side. She’d love to put together a cabaret act with her daughters, as well. “I like to teach,” she said. I have a lot of experience I can share. I just have to figure out where. You have to reach out and network or nothing will happen.”

30th Annual Home, Garden & Orchid Show a Great Success! The Chamber’s 30th Annual Home, Garden & Orchid Show, held March 5th & 6th at the Martin County Fairgrounds, was a winner thanks to all the generous sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, food concessions and attendees. Saturday and Sunday showed record high crowds as the weather was perfect; sun shining with a constant breeze. Stuart Coffee joined the mix this year with delicious coffee and baked goods both days. Charlie’s Bar & Grille satisfied the appetites and thirst of our busy vendors and attendees at lunchtime. People shopped and shopped some more; orchids, plants, art, metal garden sculptors, jewelry and of course all the home products and services. A variety of kitchen and bath designers, furniture, home builders, art, windows, doors, dogs

& kittens from the Humane Society, landscape design, remodeling specialists, home security and more filled the shows eight buildings and outside areas. Orchids Carnivale by the Orchid Society and the Garden Fest by the Garden Club of Stuart entertained many plant enthusiasts with their astounding orchid and plant displays. Gardening classes took place both days. Visionary School of Art marveled the crowd with their art gallery of incredible works by the students and teachers, alike. Thank you to our Platinum sponsor, Venture Construction Group of Florida. Appreciation goes out to our Gold sponsors, Sandhill Cove Retirement Living, fortunoff backyard store, LOWES, Visionary School of Art and Paradise Exteriors. Our In-kind sponsors were Stuart

Fence, ACE Hardware, Cove Gardens, Big Pine Nursery and Crary Buchanan Attorneys at Law. A special thank you is extended to Jensen Beach ROTC for manning the parking lot and United Way for providing helpers.

All told, the show, in its entirety sported over 100 vendors and saw close to 8,000 visitors over the course of the weekend. To view photos from the show visit the Chamber’s photo gallery at www.stuartmartinchamber.org.
