Michael DiTerlizzi Tigers on defense seeks second term Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — The Martin County School Board District 5 seat is in a three-way race. Incumbent Michael DiTerlizzi has announced his aim to remain on the board four more years. “I’ve always been the type of person to want to give back to my community,” DiTerlizzi said. “I’ve found through public service a fulfillment.” DiTerlizzi was a county com-

missioner from 2000 to 2008. He term limited himself. DiTerlizzi believes elected officials should do a maximum of two terms in any office. He made an unsuccessful bid for the state legislature, then ran for the School Board in 2012. “When I came on in 2012, there were a lot of disagreements,” DiTerlizzi said. “It was my goal to help change that.” DiTerlizzi said the school board had descended into a chaotic situation and tensions were

MARTIN COUNTY — Dennis Root figures taxpayers are footing the Sheriff’s Office’s bills, so they should know what they’re getting for their dollars. He said if voters elect him, he’ll act quickly for them to see a return on investment at the Sheriff’s Office. “I think that the biggest change people would see is the level of dedication to transparency and accountability,” Root said. Root is a 25-year law-enforcement veteran with experience running small businesses. He’s aimed for the sheriff’s star since he started his career. “Essentially, running for sheriff has been a dream my entire adult life,” Root said. Root is serving as a part-time cop in Palm Beach Shores since leaving the Sheriff’s Office in 2011. He started his career in Riviera Beach and eventually made his way to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. He resigned his position. “What really compelled me, when I left in 2011, the ultimate goal was to further develop my professional career,” he said. “I thought I needed to learn more about the business aspects (of running a department). I wanted to bring a new way of doing business to the position.” Root said, if elected, he’d get as many reports online as possible, so taxpayers can evaluate whether they’re “getting a return on investment.” “I think one of the first things people would see is I will actually publish the Sheriff’s Office budget

Martin County awaits answers to numerous, critical safety questions from AAF MARTIN COUNTY — On Nov. 3, 2015, Martin County sent a letter to All Aboard Florida (AAF) President Michael Reininger, in an effort to address ongoing concerns about the potential negative safety impacts of the proposed AAF passenger rail project. The letter seeks clarification from AAF about the safety technology it would employ, and includes detailed safety questions and concerns that are of paramount importance to ensuring the safety of residents who cross the railroad tracks every day. Specifically, the County asked for AAF’s position on track and crossing safety measures, such as sealed corridor improvements, re-grading of intersections, and various pedestrian crossing improvements, as well as the inclusion of advanced technologies such as positive train control, vehicle presence detection, and remote health monitoring systems. “We formally wrote to All Aboard Florida to request clarity

on where they stand regarding a variety of safety measures that we believe should be included if their project is built,” said Richard Creech, engineering consultant for the County. “It is our intent that AAF take every precaution necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of our citizens, and at a minimum comply with existing safety requirements,” Creech added. While AAF has informally talked to Martin County staff and lawyers about technical aspects of its plans, it has refused to verbally take a position on specific safety requirements and has not responded in writing to the County’s November 3rd letter. Further, it is the County’s understanding that after the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Safety Office met with AAF officials regarding safety requirements in December 2015; the agency subsequently sent a letter to the railroad in December 2015 detailing its view of these requirements. My goal is to get us to the top ranks in the country, not the state, but the country.” Among other things, DiTerlizzi said if reelected he’ll continue tackling what he sees as bureaucratic over meddling in the classroom. “I don’t think bureaucrats should be telling us how to teach,” DiTerlizzi said. He’s opposed to the amount of testing ushered in under the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. “This whole Common Core, the (Next Generation) Sunshine State Standards, needs fixing,” DiTerlizzi said. “This is what (the School Board has) been working on. It needs fixing. We’ve been working with legislators about this. The largest part about it is the testing. There’s 40-some-odd tests our students have to take.” The once-dreaded Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test — child’s play in comparison, DiTerlizzi said. “FCAT is looking pretty good right now,” he said. The automobile repair business owner seemed an unlikely pick for a school board even to himself and he did research to find out if he even qualified to run. “I didn’t go to college, but I always had a sense about things,” DiTerlizzi said. “Call it street sense, call it common sense. I was always able to solve problems.” DiTerlizzi said he’s helped contribute to a productive atmosphere on the board. That, he said, has helped the district get financially in order, and focused on students. “We’re number 3 in the state right now,” DiTerlizzi said. “We have A (schools), B (schools) and C (schools) in the district right now. We have no D schools, we have no F schools.” In February, the Florida Department of Education released its annual school and district grades. Martin tied for the bronze out of

We worked in the leg how we evaluate teachers. It’s burdensome. It’s burdensome on the teacher.” In addition to DiTerlizzi, Larry Green and Joshua Ferraro are running for the District 5 School Board seat. The race is non-partisan. Our sincere appreciation to the many hole sponsors and silent auction donors. Without community support, the event would not be possible. The Lady Niners wish to extend a very special thank you to Mr. Danny Mays and the entire Evergreen staff for their assistance, cooperation and kindness. The “Scramble for Charity” was truly a team effort. Our thanks to every member of The Evergreen team. Our guest speaker, Michelle Tysinger, a SafeSpace Outreach Advocate held the audience spell bound while she shared the experiences of victims and their children. Tysinger explained how SafeSpace ends the cycle of domestic violence and provides safety, support and education to empower victims to become survivors. oday, U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy made the following statement hailing the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA) by voice vote in the House of Representatives. Reauthorization of the OAA was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate last summer, but the House had failed to act on it for months until a recent Murphy-backed bipartisan effort called for its passage. For over 50 years, the OAA has supported health care and independent living programs that provide aid to millions of Americans seniors, most of whom are low income. “When it comes to caring for our most vulnerable and keeping our promise to our seniors, it should never be a partisan issue. I was proud to join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in calling for this critical reauthorization to move forward,” said Murphy. “For the

U.S. Representative Patrick Murphy millions of Florida seniors who depend on the Older Americans Act — from Meals on Wheels to caregiver support to fraud and abuse protections — this is a major win. Martin County to host Extreme Recycling Roundup FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — As residents begin the annual routine of spring cleaning, there’s no better time to look around the house and uncover the many hazardous items that are hiding in the garage, kitchen and laundry room. While they may seem harmless, items such as old paint, forgotten electronics, used motor oil and broken light bulbs contain potentially hazardous components and require special care when disposing of them. The Recycling Roundup is an easy and no-cost way for Martin County residents to safely dispose of this type of waste. Martin County residents can stop by the Extreme Recycling Roundup on Saturday, March 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Martin County Fairgrounds (south end) and drop off up to 100 pounds of household hazardous waste at no cost. “We encourage our residents to take advantage of this easy and free Martin County recycling program to help keep hazardous

items out of the regular waste stream,” explained Wendy Parker, Martin County’s Utility & Solid Waste Program Manager. “Any item that is potentially harmful to people, pets or the environment is considered a household hazardous waste and those items should never be disposed of curbside or poured down the drain because they can be harmful to worker’s safety, as well as our waterways and environment,” added Parker. Common household products often are labeled with the words toxic, danger, poison or flammable are the type of item the county is encouraging residents to bring to the Recycling Roundup. Aerosol cans, paint, cleaners, lubricants, oil, antifreeze, pesticides, batteries, fertilizer, fluorescent light bulbs, electronics, computer equipment, fax machines, cell phones and TVs are all considered hazardous waste. The Recycling Roundup is for residential items only. The following items will not be accepted at

AAF from page 3 mation Act (FOIA) requests have been filed to obtain it, and U.S. Congressman Bill Posey (R-FL) sent the FRA a letter in January, also requesting a copy of the letter. To date, FRA has not provided the document. AAF’s failure to respond to Martin County’s safety letter of Nov. 3, 2015, coupled with the FRA’s as yet unexplained decision not to make its December 2015 safety letter to AAF publicly available when requested, means that critical safety questions of concern to Martin County remain unanswered. Martin County’s five page letter requested clarification, not only on whether certain safety train and track features would be included in AAF’s high-speed passenger rail project, but also on whether AAF was willing to pay for the costs associated with maintaining those safety

Additionally, Murphy intro-

improvement measures. “AAF’s passenger rail project creates an unfunded mandate for Martin County taxpayers. By 2030, our estimates indicate the County will have spent upwards of $7.7 million on the maintenance of AAF-related safety improvements,” said Creech. “This is a fundamentally unfair burden to place on our citizens.” Martin County will continue its work to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public as it relates to the AAF project. For more resources and information on the many local and regional issues of concern relating to the proposed AAF passenger rail project, including presentations, studies, letters of concern to state and federal agencies and more, visit www. martin.fl.us. Palm Citys ‘Rocky’ readies the car show Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — The cars are getting spiffed up for the 20th annual Classics at the Beach Car Show at the Elliott Museum. That’s going to be on Sunday, April. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. But, one of the most interesting things about the show isn’t the cars ranging from a 1925 Model T Roadster to a 2016 Chevy Corvette Z06. Nah, the most interesting thing to see at the show is Palm City’s Rocky, the show’s chairperson. “For 24 years, six days a week, I was in the parts business,” she said. Yep, she. “Rocky” is Rachelle Grady. She goes by Rocky. “All my customers were men,” Rocky said. “All my employees were men. I was definitely in a man’s world. I’m very petite, and you would not look at me and think I’m into cars as I am.” But, boy is she into cars. How many classic cars does Rocky own? “I’m not sure,” she said. “I think I own 20.” Rocky and her husband, Henry, live in Martin Downs. They keep her car collection at a 12,000-foot Stuart warehouse. What does

Henry think of this classic car obsession? “He was already a car guy when I met him,” Grady said. “I don’t think I’d gotten involved with anyone who wasn’t.” Indeed, Henry was in the car parts distribution business when they met. Rocky’s other love is boats. Their first date was on one of his sailboats. “I fell in love with the boat that very first night,” Rocky said. “I didn’t fall in love with Henry for several more days.” But, fall in love she did. The two married in 1975. A few years later, the new hubby asked her to get into the car-parts business with him. “In ‘78 he asked me to help him out building up a new distributor of Japanese and European car parts,” Rocky said. She was in real-estate finance at the time, but jumped at the chance to be in the car business surrounded by what she loves most — Uh, besides Henry, of course. The pair owned Action Parts Inc. “You can throw any car part up on the counter, and I can tell you the name,” Rocky said. The pair moved to Palm City 12 years ago and found their way to the Elliott Museum, built to honor fellow car buff Sterling

Ocean Blvd., Stuart. Grady is a classic European car buff. Elliott. Rocky volunteered at the car show, and found herself doing more and more until one day she was the chairperson. That got her asked to join the board of directors and later the finance committee. Some of her cars are on display at the museum, too. Rocky said there’s no sense in having a passion if you don’t use it. “I always drive a cool car as an everyday car,” she said. These days that’s a Jaguar XK8 convertible. Rocky fancies the rare European set.

“The cars that I collect and the cars that are my favorites are the sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s, but they have to be European,” she said. “I do not collect American. I don’t collect any that a large number were built.” There’ll be about 90 classic cars in the show, which is judged. Admission is $14, $8 for children ages 6 to 12. Admission includes the car show and museum. The museum is at 825 N.E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart. More about the car show is at www.classicsatthebeach.org.

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

MARTIN COUNTY — The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast will be hosting its 8th Annual Purse Party Luncheon and Auction, April 11, at the beautiful Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club. The committee, led by Tammy Calabria and Laura Leighton, has worked diligently to gather new and gently used purses and accessories from local businesses and individuals ranging from top name designers — Tory Burch, Dooney & Bourke, Gucci, Fendi, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Cole Haan and Coach — to name a few. This fabulous collection will be auctioned off to the highest bidder during the silent auction. The Downtown Business Association of Stuart and the Downtown Shopping District has made a huge impact this year with many of them volunteering to show off their unique items during the fashion show. Palm City and Port St. Lucie. While Muto has listings in Palm City and Port St. Lucie, his goal is to list and sell homes in the Palm City area. Although sales are increasing, Palm City has a low inventory of houses on the market. He credits the sales increase to residents pricing well, which leads to a quick sell. If you are considering selling, Muto’s tips are to make sure you really want to sell, take the time to price right, and if your home needs work, take the time to address the problems before putting the home on the market. “Today’s buyers are much more sophisticated.” Pricing your home correctly will help with selling. Play an interesting ‘match’ STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — The dramatic comedy “Match,” by Stephen Belber, tells the story of Tobi, an eccentric and aging dancer, choreographer and teacher. A young couple, Mike and Lisa, come to meet him, ostensibly to interview him for Lisa’s thesis. There is, however, much more to the story as Mike is seeking information about his mother, a dancer at the time Tobi was becoming famous. Dennis O’Donovan is president and creative director of A.C.T. Studio Theatre, located in Cedar Point Plaza in Stuart. He is directing “Match” in April at the theater. “This is the last of the plays the previous owner had programmed,” he said. “It was always intended for me to direct. I took to it very quickly, once I read it. It’s quite possibly one I would have picked. There’s a warmth to the characters that is very attractive and comforting. One of the reasons I like the play is ‘the writing, the writing, the writing.’” His cast consists of Johnny Waitt as Tobi, Megan Pollak as Lisa and Steve Cabral as Mike. “Johnny appeared in ‘A Tuna Christmas’ (in December,)” O’Donovan said. “Each actor played 11 characters and had to

exhibit a versatile range. Tobi is written in a way that skirts the edge of quirky and outrageous. He’s very comfortable in his own skin and is not a character who is all about his insecurities. He is happy about every decision he’s ever made, for good or ill.” Megan Pollak, who plays Lisa, is a newcomer to A.C.T. “She came through one of our directors,” O’Donovan said. “She brings a real sincerity to the character which is a very important component. Steve has been with A.C.T. since nearly the beginning. He started in the same activing class I started in. He appeared in ‘Rabbit Hole’ last season. Mike is bottled up and battling demons and Steve brings to the character a strong sense of how it looks from the outside. It’s not until the second act that we begin to see inside.” O’Donovan wants to alert the audience to adult language in the play, “There is a frank discussion of experiences, in a light-hearted way, but for adults,” he said, “It’s a bit salty and I choose the word judiciously as it implies a little bit of profanity, but in fun.” This was to be the season finale, but as the season began, David Mamet’s “Oleanna” was added to the schedule. It will be presented at the end of May into June. During the summer, when most theaters in town are dark, the

Studio Theatre in April. plays “Vanities” and “Rounding Third” will be presented. The first is about sorority sisters and the second about Little League coaches. “We chose some fairly family-friendly shows,” O’Donovan said, “There’s one for the girls and one for the boys. We had a sense there would be an audience year-round and we intend to give programming year round.”

There will also be a summer youth program in June. More information about all the arts summer programs in the area will appear in upcoming issues. A.C.T. Studio Theatre, 2399 S.E. Ocean Blvd., presents Stephen Belber’s play “Match” April 8-10, 15-17 and 22-23. Tickets are $24 and are available online at www. actstudiotheatre.com or at (772) 210-5373.

Maltz Jupiter Theatre invites performers from all over to audition FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — Every stage production begins with auditions, and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is encouraging professional performers from Martin County to try out. The first of the Theatre’s auditions for the shows in its 2016/17 season, Let Us Entertain You!, will take place in Jupiter on Friday, March 25, with auditions for all of the shows: “The Audience” (Oct. 23 – Nov. 6), “Me and My Girl” (Nov. 29 – Dec. 18), “The Producers” (Jan. 10 – 29), “Disgraced” (Feb. 12 – 26) and “Gypsy” (March 21 – April 9). Performers auditioning for the season’s dramas should be ready to read passages from the script, musical talent come with two brief contrasting musical theatre songs (up-tempo and ballad) and a one-minute monologue, and are asked to bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. All auditioning should bring a headshot and résumé. Other upcoming auditions in Jupiter include auditions specifically for the two dramas (“The

Audience” and “Disgraced”) on Monday, March 28, as well as auditions specifically for the three musicals (“Me and My Girl,” “The Producers” and “Gypsy”) on Friday, April 1. As the largest regional theatre in Florida, the Theatre is one of the area’s top employers of both onstage and backstage talent, including directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, performers and stage crew. To cast its professional shows, the Theatre draws from both local and national talent. Of 105 stage roles needed during the 2015/16 season, 55 performers were from Florida. The remaining 50 performers were from New York and elsewhere. “People have the misconception that talent can only be found in New York or other big cities – but talent exists everywhere,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director and chief executive. “We’d like to encourage local performers to read the casting information on the Theatre’s website, find a role that interests them, make an appointment, show up to auditions and let their

talents be known. Our first priority is to employ talented actors from this area.” Between 400 and 700 people typically audition in New York for each of the Theatre’s largescale musicals, and as many as 250 people audition for its plays. However, the Theatre’s leaders always give strong consideration to local performers due to their desire to support local talent. There are also financial incentives to hiring locally, since the Theatre is required to offer housing to any union performer outside a 50-mile radius. All directors are present at callbacks. “There are so many opportunities to be seen at our Theatre,” said Rachel Blavatnik, the Theatre’s associate producer and company manager who coordinates casting. “Just like on Broadway, we follow Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) union requirements and host Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs), or union open calls. However, non-union actors can also attend these auditions and wait in line to be seen. All performers are encouraged to make an appointment.”

“People have the misconception that talent can only be found in New York or other big cities – but talent exists everywhere.” Andrew Kato Public student auditions will be held on Saturday, April 9, starting at 10 a.m., with the Theatre’s seventh annual First Step to Stardom audition day, with roles for dozens of students (ages 7 – 24). The day will feature casting for the Theatre’s professional productions of The Audience, The Producers and Gypsy. Full details of all of the Theatre’s casting sessions can be found by visiting www.jupitertheatre.org and clicking on the “auditions” button on the side of the page (or by visiting www.jupitertheatre. org/auditions). First Step to Stardom audition information can be found by visiting www.jupitertheatre.org/fsts.
