TREASURE COAST — Opposition to the proposed All Aboard Florida is strong, if not more so a confederation of opponents than an organization of them. On Saturday, March 19, that loosely-organized group of protestors will head to Florida East Coast Industries’ tracks at six locations from Palm Beach to Brevard counties for the “Move ‘Em West Rally at the Rails.” Move ‘Em West is a reference to compelling All Aboard Florida, which is owned by Florida East Coast Industries, to use CSX Corporation tracks that run near Lake Okeechobee. The company has nixed the idea. Susan Mehiel, publisher of the e-newsletter Train Wreck Times, said the confederated rally was by popular demand. “A group of us along the Treasure Coast said we need to do something — we need to do a rally,” she said. “We didn’t want to do the standard rally where there’s a stage and people go and talk and talk and talk. We had people saying, ‘Come on, let’s grab our signs and bullhorns and go to the train tracks.”

Palm City veterans-assistance organization gets helping hand from county Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — Hundreds of regional cyclists are spinning up for the fifth annual Riding for Heroes, which benefits the Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson (U.S. Marines) Memorial Foundation, Justin’s Wings, a Palm City veterans- and military-family assistance organization. This year riders’ entry fees will do more for area veterans and military families. At its last regular meeting — Tuesday, March 8 — the Martin County Commission adopted a policy that, among other things, eliminates fees for memorial fundraising events for people county parks are named after. There’s only park and event covered by the new policy so far — Justin’s Wings’ fundraising ride based at the Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Memorial Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm
City. Last year County Commissioner John Haddox, a Navy veteran, used district funds to reimburse the foundation’s fees with a nod from fellow commissioners. The previous three years the Wilson foundation paid fees to use the Wilson park. Haddox asked Kevin Abate, the parks and recreation director, to figure out a way to end fees for Justin’s Wings’ annual cycling fundraiser fairly. “It was extremely encouraging when (Abate) informed me that he’d figured out a way so when a park is named after an individual the family could use to park at no cost for fundraising events to honor the individual,” Haddox said. Justin Wilson, who moved to Palm City shortly before enlisting in the Marines, died in an IED attack on March 22, 2010, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, OEF. He’d just turned 24. Riding for Heroes is scheduled on the third Sunday of March annually to fall on or near the anniversary of his death.

PALM CITY — Domino’s Cat Rescue League is bringing Art to the Heart of Palm City on Saturday, March 19, at Manero’s Restaurant, 2851 S.W. High Meadow Ave. “It’s the first one,” Mallo Bissett, board member at Domino’s, said. Bissett is a member of the Palm City Arts Associates and owner of Red Barn Furniture in Stuart. Even with such an active life, Bissett has a thought forever in the front of her mind. “I’m always trying to make some money for the kitties,” she said. Domino’s House — which is a no-kill facility — has about 150 cats it cares for. Cat owners can do the math. That’s a lot of cat litter, food and medicine. It costs more than $1,000 a week to keep the facility going. “Being an artist, I was fortunate to run into the (Florida Highwaymen),” Bissett said. The Highwaymen are a Treasure Coast treasure. They were a group of 26 black artists, most from Fort Pierce, who made their
livings painting and selling art door-to-door and on roadsides, because galleries wouldn’t display their work in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Their distinctive landscapes caught on and today galleries vie to display their works. Among artists who’ll display at Art in the Heart are Mary Ann Carroll, Isaac Knight, Kelvin Hair, Sam Butler, along with Richard Edwards, Richard Burgan, AJ Brown and Johnny Stovall. “They’re interested in making money themselves, of course, but they’ll give some money to Domino’s,” Bissett said. She said artists are giving 10 to 20 percent of their sales to the rescue and adoption organization, which is in Palm City. Domino’s has asked Your Voice News & Views not to reveal its address in stories, because of previous problems with unscheduled drop offs. In addition to the art sales, there’re going to be raffles and giveaways at Art in the Heart. “I’m a good beggar,” Bissett said. “I beg on my knees.” In actually, Bissett said many artists and businesses were

An early and belated birthday present to me
I
have a big birthday coming up in March and no, I’m not telling you which one it is. Suffice it to say that it is big. I have big plans, too, but more about those later. Fifteen years ago. I had another big birthday coming up. I was battling severe complications from breast cancer and things were pretty bleak on a day-today basis. It was summer and I decided to plan a trip to France with my husband, Roy, for my birthday in March. We would land triumphantly in Paris like de Gaulle after World War II. Unfortunately, I had a few additional complications and the trip had to be delayed a month. Still, in April, we arrived, fittingly, at Charles de Gaulle airport. One entire suitcase was devoted to medical supplies, but we made it and we made memories. Roy promised me we would return. Life intervened again. Roy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and we never made it back to Paris. This past November, as the big birthday began to loom, I decided to do something on a grand scale. After all, the birthday was going to happen whether I did something to celebrate or not. It had been a long time between trips and I’d lost some of my mojo. I wasn’t thrilled about traveling

Shelley Koppel alone. I began to plan for a trip, telling friends that it was the trip I was planning, but not taking. One day, I bought a carry-on case with wheels. Another time, it was luggage tags or a wallet that protected against identity theft. Still, it was the trip I wasn’t taking. In January, I was having a bad day and I decided that I was taking the trip. I put down a deposit because actually plunking down a large sum of hard cash (or credit card) focuses my mind. I booked a trip for a river cruise on the Seine, to take place in Octo-

ber. The itinerary is the stuff that dreams are made of, or at least my dreams. I am going to Paris a day early, flying out of West Palm Beach via Newark. I want to have a day in Paris to visit the Marmottan Museum, home to many Monets. That’s important because the first stop on the trip is Vernon, where Giverney is located. That’s where Monet painted many of his masterpieces. The thought of looking out of the garden as he saw them is awe-inspiring. The trip moves to Duclair, home to the ruins of Norman abbeys. It goes to Honfleur, an old fishing village, and then to Trouville and Deauville, resort towns famous in 1930s movies. There is a stop at a Calvados distillery for a tasting. Then it’s on to Rouen, whose cathedral Monet painted. It’s also where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Finally, we got to Les Andelys and Martainville chateau, a XVth century chateau that is now a museum of art and artifacts used in Normandy at the time. I’ll

For me, shopping in Paris is a mission. When I was younger, I would plan such trips, even pre-Internet, with no trouble. Now, one of the scariest parts of the trip is how scary it is. Just because I’m older, my world shouldn’t narrow. Just because I am on my own, fear shouldn’t drive away my sense of adventure. It’s important to me that I go because I’ll have a wonderful time, but also because I can. I’ll return to Paris in October with Roy in my heart. I’ll keep you posted on how things are going. Who knows? This year, it’s Paris. Can Italy be far behind?

Dear friend, Our waterways are once again in crisis, with heavy rainfall causing large amounts of runoff and discharges from Lake Okeechobee to inundate the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon. While we continue pushing to restore the natural flow of the Everglades south of the lake, the dire situation requires immediate action. The Army Corps of Engineers has worked with state officials to do just that, moving more water south of Lake Okeechobee by raising the water levels of the L-29 canal that runs parallel to the Tamiami Trail. North of the lake, further progress has been made on a project to relieve our waterways with the recent acquisition of new conservation easements to expand the Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area by 5,300 acres. This acquisition will include flood protection areas and water storage lands. Since its creation in 2012, the Everglades Headwaters land acquisition program has helped maintain open land north of Lake
Patrick Murphy Okeechobee to improve water quality and increase water storage in the area, complementing the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). This program also protects critical habitats for Florida’s unique wildlife, including over 30 threatened and endangered species. I am proud to support this program and pleased to see its expansion.

PEYTON from page 1 After the family was given clearance to reenter the home, the couple and their two children, Peyton and Riley, got sick. Everyone recovered, except Peyton. For him getting sick was the start of an harrowing odyssey that’s caused him at 10-day stay at Miami Children’s Hospital, followed by transferring to St. Mary’s Medical Center, West Palm Beach. He was 9 when the crisis started, and turned 10 at the hospital. Under plea agreements in the
criminal case, Williams and Curry could face up to a year in federal prison each. Sentencing will be on May 11. Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey & Fronrath, West Palm Beach, is representing the family in a civil suit against Terminix and Sunland Pest Control. State Rep. MaryLynn Magar filed legislation during the last session to toughen regulations on when fumigation companies can give the OK for people and pets to reenter homes. The new regulations go into effect in July.

PALM CITY — After almost 40 years in education, Principal Larry Green isn’t hanging up the hat. He’s thrown it into the ring. Green is one of three announced candidates for the Martin County School Board’s District 5 seat. All live in Palm City. “I would not get involved in any other politics besides education,” he said. Green is principal at Pinewood Elementary School in Stuart. He’s retiring at the end of April. He started his education career in Martin County in 1978 at Port Salerno Elementary. He’d just graduated from Trenton State College and applied at all 67 Florida school districts. Green said he was 22 and Martin offered $9,085 a year. “For a person just out of college, that was a million dollars,” Green said. Green went from teaching physical education to classrooms to administration, staying in Martin’s elementary schools throughout his career. Along the way he did something unusual for teachers.
“I’ve been attending (Martin County School Board) meetings for the last 20 years,” he said. The 60-year-old said he’s watched the process of policy making become classroom instruction. Green has developed a lot of ideas about how to make it better. Like many, he’s skeptical of the about 20-year-old trend to give children what seems like an ever-growing inventory of standardized tests. However, Green said some standardized testing helps schools, districts, and the state see where problems lie to fix them. “We need to make sure it’s a valid test and we don’t over test our students,” he said. Additionally, Green said compensating teachers tops his priorities. Green breaks with many educators on one point about pay. “I do believe in performance pay,” he said. However, Green said that the best pay does only so much to keep teachers in classrooms. He said many educators get a sense of occupational isolation. “We need to support our educators,” Green said. “They’re the ones in the trenches. Everybody says we should support our teachers, but when the rubber

He said the district is facing challenges as it starts to climb out of the housing-recession bust. Government and school district budgets lag one to two years behind economic rebounds. “I don’t need to be trained,” Green said. “I’ve been attending school board meetings for 20 years and I’m an educator. I can hit the ground running. I know the process. I know education. I know what kids need.”

AAF from page 1 For those who want to do more protesting, there’ll be the “Smart Change, Not Ramrod Trains!” rally and concert on Saturday, April 9, at Stuart’s Memorial Park, 100 S.E. Ocean Blvd. That rally will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include updates about ongoing legal actions Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties are taking to stop the proposed high-speed passenger rail that’ll cut a swath through the Treasure Coast. It’s a cut that critics say will bleed the local economy of marine-industry and other jobs, among other damages. In February, The Martin County Commission threw another $850,000 into its All Aboard Florida opposition fund to continue suits against federal and state agencies fully expecting it’ll have to put down more money in what it sees as a high-stakes hand that it can’t lose. Last year the commission unanimously approved creation of a $1.4 million fund to battle the proposed passenger service that’ll run on mostly existing tracks from Miami to Orlando. Indian River County created a $2.7 million opposition fund at the same time, and St. Lucie a $500,000 one a couple months later. Groups such as Florida Not All
Aboard, Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida and Citizens Against the Train have urged and supported counties’ legal and public-information campaigns against All Aboard Florida. The opposition groups loosely coordinate some efforts, and there are membership overlaps, too. However, the groups remain independent of each other. The March 19 rallies will be 11 a.m. One of the protests will be in Fort Pierce at Indian River and Seaway drives. Another will be in Stuart at Indian Street and Federal Highway. Mehiel said protests’ organizers plan for them to be about an hour. They’ll be on sidewalks about 100 feet from train tracks. She said protestors should wear comfortable clothes, along with taking sunscreen and water with them. There’s a good chance trains will pass during the protests. Parents whose young children will accompany them and people with sound sensitivities might want to take earplugs. “Some people are bringing comfortable chairs,” Mehiel said. The County Commission renamed the Palm City park in 2011 to honor the young man who played handball there before joining the military. Wilson’s parents still live in Palm City. The ride with four routes ranging 40 to 105 miles will be on Sunday, March 20. This year the event has a new ride — a short one designed for families to enjoy. “It’s (at) noon, and donations only,” Fran Wilson, mother of Justin Wilson and the foundation’s co-founder, said. “They have to have a bike and a helmet.” The route for the family-friendly ride is about three kilometers, 1.8 miles, around the park. “We’ll attach a flag to their bikes and all take off at noon,” Wilson said. The county’s policy waiving fees for the event is saving the foundation $280. The ride is its only annual fundraiser. Last year the ride and an accompanying handball tournament at the park raised about $7,000. The handball tournament, organized by Justin’s in-laws, won’t happen this year, due to a family emergency. Justin’s Wings is working with another Palm City veterans-assistance organization, Courage on All Fronts. That organization has three veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder in training with service dogs at Pawsitively Paradise, a service-animal training organization which is also in Palm City. “We actually have the veterans go and choose their dogs from a rescue organization,” Alicia Cheplick, president of Courage on All Fronts, said in a previous interview. “We adopt them. We have them put under the veterans’ names, but we pay for it. The dogs go (for training) for six to eight months. Once they’re trained, they’re placed in the home.” PTSD service dogs are typically trained to detect when their owners are becoming stressed and to calm them. The Treasure Coast Cycling Association, TCCA, organizes the fundraiser with Justin’s Wings.
John Goings, event organizer at TCCA, said the ride is getting more famous among the state’s cyclists. “We expect 200 to 300 this year,” he said. Goings said the recent repaving and addition of bike lanes on Citrus Boulevard between Martin Highway and Indiantown will give future rides a boost and attract more cyclists to Palm City. “That’s been a place for people to avoid, because there was no shoulder or anything,” Goings said. “Having that new pavement and cycle lanes opens up a whole new (cycling) corridor.” Indeed, on April 3 Citrus Boulevard will be the track for the Florida Bicycle Racing Association’s State Time Trial Championships. A time trial is an event in which cyclists are riding for best times, not against each other. The 25-mile time trial will be based at Indiantown’s Timer Powers Park, 14000 S.W. Citrus Blvd. Riders will head east on Citrus to Palm City and return to Indiantown. The day before, April 2, the Florida Bicycle Racing Association’s State Criterium Championships will be at Halpatiokee Regional Park, Stuart. Abate said Martin County will get a huge tourism and economic boost from the events. “We’ll have probably 1,000 riders,” Abate said. “The best cyclists in the State of Florida will be here in Martin County that weekend.” Abate said the county has done an outstanding job building bike lanes that are attracting cycling tourists. “We’re the (cycling) epicenter of Florida,” Abate said. “The Florida Bicycle Racing Association — they love us. They love what we’re doing with the sport.” Riding for Heroes allows sameday registrations, which starts at 6:30 a.m. Riders on the two longer routes, 105 and 80 miles, leave at 7:30 a.m. Those going 56 miles leave at 8:15 a.m. Riders doing the 40-mile route will start at 9 a.m. Registration day of the event will be $60, cash only. A domino is a loose, hooded cloak worn with a half mask as part of a masquerade costume, and is the likely namesake for the tiles used for games such as muggins. Domino seemed to be a stray, or abandoned, cat untrained and illequipped to hunt. He disappeared one day. The Sines gave up hope

in finding him. Three weeks later, however, he called to them when they were feeding others. “We were taking care of the colony when his back got crushed, probably by a car or raccoon,” Maris said. He’d lost his muscle tone, fat stores and his tail. He looked nearly dead. Domino seemed to know that the Sines would help him. They did. From the early 1990s to 2007, Domino lived with the Sines and inspired them to start an organization dedicated to keeping cats alive to find loving homes. A gaggle of characters from a ghostly gunslinger to a gypsy with no eyes led visitors through a maze of themed tents into the world of Balthazar’s Beauties. The group, about 300 strong, is called Treasure Coast Cosplayers. They describe themselves on Facebook as “a team of awesome people who enjoy cosplaying and strive to spread positivity in cosplay.” Treasure Coast Cosplayers started out barely a year ago with just about a half-dozen members and has grown to more than 300. The group, which includes butchers, builders, welders and seamstresses, draws upon collective talents to pull off realistic depictions of early 20th-century freak shows. Palm City butcher Scotty Button depicts the ghostly gunslinger

Originally joining as a woodworker, building set pieces and props for the troupe’s shows, he was asked to play in front of people this time rather than work behind the scenes. Button says being a performer has been a learning experience. “I’m used to being quiet, not really talking to people, but being in this group has really helped me open up,” he says. Both Katelyn Johnson and Scotty Button represent a new type of fan who do more than appreciate a film genre. They live it. “Cosplay used to be a real subculture thing, but a lot of people let their freak flags fly now,” Johnson said. Event organizer Ryan Strickland, whose company South Florida

TREASURE COAST — Fort Pierce’s Fenn center was the scene of the gruesome, the ghastly and the gory on March 4, 5 and 6 as horrorphiles (fans of the horror genre of entertainment) descended onto the site to rub elbows with horror stars and all things macabre. American Horror Story fans were treated with two AHS fan favorites; actress Naomi Grossman who plays the precocious pinhead Pepper and Mat Fraser, whose disability Phocomelia landed him the role of Paul the illustrated seal boy in FX television’s American Horror Story-Freakshow (Fraser’s arms are underdeveloped, giving them the appearance of flippers). Though the event had to compete with the last weekend of the St. Lucie County Fair, Treasure Coast Seafood Fest and the Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival, Strickland wasn’t unhappy with the turnout. “A lot was going on this weekend and we still had just over 3,000 people in two days,” he says. Katelyn Johnson, from Tradition, who plays a gypsy named Simza, says her alter ego comes naturally to her. “I grew up in theater, so I’ve
always been a huge fan of costumes,” she says. “I’m a giant nerd.” Katelyn Johnson, or Simza the Gypsy, felt good about more than just the turnout. She felt good about being part of something bigger than just attendance numbers. “You get to nerd out and be around a bunch of dorks doing things together,” she says. Projects like this will not solve our problems overnight, but they still have very real benefits and can help our waterways that are currently in crisis. While we focus on short-term solutions to provide immediate relief to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon, we should not lose sight of the long-term solutions to address a problem that has plagued our ecosystem, our community, and our economy for far too long. That is why I continue to push for critical funding for the Army Corps to keep moving forward on the C-44 Indian River Lagoon South project and repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike so we can store more water in this reservoir and the lake itself, reducing the need for harmful discharges. I am pleased to report that following our request for full funding for critical Everglades restoration efforts – which highlighted the importance of completing the C-44 reservoir and stormwater treatment area to improve the health of our waterways – the President’s budget included $59.5 million to keep this local project moving forward. That is nearly 80 percent of the entire funding for overall Everglades restoration efforts being dedicated to this project in our backyard, which is a major win for our waterways thanks to

While I continue to push for funding and authorization of critical Everglades restoration projects on the federal level – including getting CEPP underway to send more clean water south – we also have more work to do on the state level. I am disappointed to see that after Amendment 1 received the support of 75 percent of Florida voters, this funding has not been used to advance land acquisition and conservation efforts. I am proud to support legislation introduced by my Treasure Coast colleagues Senator Joe Negron and Representative Gayle Harrell to make sure these funds are used as Florida voters intended. This week, I called on state lawmakers to swiftly pass these important bills that dedicate Amendment 1 funds to help improve the health of our local waterways and the entire Everglades system. Please know that as long as I have the privilege of serving Florida in Congress, I remain dedicated to fighting each and every day for our environment. STUART — If you come to the Lyric Theatre March 18 to see the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, you may see someone come across the stage on a unicycle. There’s no way to know in advance if this will happen, because it would be an audience member getting into the spirit of things. The Orchestra, a group of musicians who emphasize the joyfulness in their music, encourages the audience to share in that joy. Sometimes, it means that they participate. In fact, the group’s number one rule is “If you know the words, sing along. If you don’t know the words, sing along!” The ensemble began some 10 years ago. Two award-winning New Zealand musicians, Age Pryor and Bret McKenzie, owned a café. Pryor went on a holiday to Fiji. “I’ve always been a musician and I went to Fiji on holiday and saw the people playing guitars and ukuleles and singing,” Pryor said. “I was struck by how beautiful it sounded and how heartfelt the connection, I went back to New Zealand and told Bret. We missed the quality of making music from the heart. It had be-

already stated, audience participation. “It’s a vibrant, joyful concert,” Pryor said. “It’s songs they’ll know or not know but will love. There’s a wide range of genres and eras.” Music could include everything from Justin Timberlake, Cyndi Lauper, rock and pop classics and traditional South Pacific music. “Our expectation and hope is that they’ll leave with a big smile on their face because they’ve had a good time,” Pryor said. “You can sit back and enjoy it. We have an informal approach to our concerts and want the audience to feel they’re in a living room amongst friends. There’s dialogue between the audience and the stage. The feeling is relaxed and if they are inspired to sing along, we encourage them.” The ensemble brings together musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds and that is its strength, Pryor believes. “It’s a magical group of an eclectic mix of people,” he said. “When it was formed it was one of those synchronistic moments over a few months. It’s an amazing group of people who (each) bring something different. Every-
one is equal to everyone else. The fascinating thing is to be part of it and observe the different characters. There’s a lot of humor on stage. They’re all fascinating people.” This is the group’s second time in the Untied States. Pryor says they have come a long way from playing for 20 in their café. The 500-seat Lyric sounds perfect to them because the size is just right for the intimate mood they like to create. What Pryor doesn’t know is what might happen. “Once people know we’re relaxed about how they react, it’s breath-taking,” he said, “We’ve had people juggling vegetables. The audience mentions that we have joy and it transfers to the audience. People feel they can let their hair down.” The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. TREASURE COAST — The Treasure Coast Community Singers Classical Chorus will be performing Brahms: A Little English, A Little German; Liebeslieder Waltz Opus 52 and Neue Liebeslieder Waltz Opus 65 under the direction of guest conductor Thomas Bold. The concerts will be held on Saturday April 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday April 10 at 3 p.m. at the North Stuart Baptist Church, 1950 NW Federal Highway. The Liebeslieder waltzes are a collection of love songs which have survived the test of time. They are frequently performed today as standard choral repertoire. An accomplished pianist, Brahms is considered to be one of the greatest composers of the 19th century. He is grouped with Bach (18th century) and Beethoven (19th century).
