Over the 22 years that I’ve been selling property on the Costa del Sol, I’ve never seen a time when there were so many options to buy. ’m a very happy man,” Jorge says – a huge smile on his face – alluding to the fact that he’s become one of the relative few, who by combining talent and drive with a dash of good fortune, has succeeded in turning his hobby into a hugely satisfying full-time career. Not that it happened overnight… Like his brother and sister, Jorge was born to Li Spanish parents living in Weinheim, Germany, and was 4 years old when the family relocated to the Costa del Sol. He opted to take a photographic course at school in Benalmádena, and had his rst camera and darkroom equipment at the age of 13, but it wasn’t until several years later – when he bought a digital camera – that photography really got under his skin. “I was blown away by the possibilities,” he enthuses. After nishing his studies, he was rst employed as a waiter. Called up to do his National Service, Jorge volunteered for the Spanish Legion, and as a member of one of Spain’s most elite Army units, was on red alert to be sent to Bosnia. Returning to civilian life in the catering industry, he worked his way up through the ranks and was soon an F&B manager at various 5-star Costa del Sol hotels. “I was well paid, but I wasn’t happy, so when local hotels were hit by the economic crisis in 2007, I used every penny I had to buy the best camera I could nd and start up my own business. It was a big risk to take, and there was no going back.
“Working for VIVA has literally changed my life and has opened so many doors for me.”

“I rented a studio, spent lots of time experimenting with photography, and even though no clients ever knocked at the door, I’d never been happier! “I started to do wedding photography for my friends, and also took photos of their babies, and got various commissions thanks to word of mouth recommendations. It’s an emotional moment when you show the mother the images you’ve taken of her little ones, and tears come to her eyes.” In 2009, when Jorge and his wife Rachel already had a 2-year-old d aughter – Sophia – of their own, VIVA were looking for a photographer. Jorge saw the advertisement in the local press, applied for the job… and got it. “I cut out the ad and it’s still on my whiteboard!” he says.

oy muy feliz", nos cuenta Jorge, con una sonrisa plena en su cara. Se reeere a que se ha convertido en una de esas personas que, combinando talento y una buena dosis de suerte, ha sido recompensado con llegar a convertir su máxima aación en un trabajo a tiempo completo. Aunque no ocurrió de la noche a la mañana. Él y sus hermanos nacieron en Weinheim (Alemania), de padres españoles. Cuando Jorge tenía 4 años, la familia volvió a España y se mudó a la Costa del Sol. A los 13 años hizo su primer curso de fotografía, en Benalmádena, y atesoró su primera cámara y equipo de revelado. Pero no fue hasta algunos años después, ya bajo la era digital, cuando la fotografía le embaucó del todo. "Estaba realmente abrumado por las posibilidades que ofrecía", nos cuenta con entusiasmo. Tras terminar sus estudios, trabajó de camarero. Cumplió también con el servicio militar y solicitó voluntariamente su ingreso en la Legión. Llegó a estar en alerta roja, a punto de ir a Bosnia. Una vez que volvió a su vida de civil en la hostelería, trabajó desde la base y fue ascendiendo hasta alcanzar el puesto de Gerente de Alimentos y Bebidas en varios hoteles 5 estrellas en la Costa del Sol. "Me pagaban bien, pero no estaba realizándome. Así que cuando los hoteles empezaron a sufrir la crisis en 2007, empleé todos mis ahorros en comprarme la mejor cámara que pude y monté mi propio aho negocio. Era bastante arriesgado y no había vuelta atrás. Alquilé un estudio, invertí muchísimo tiempo experimentando con la fotografía y, aunque no me llamaban clientes, ¡nunca había sido más feliz!".

“Es muy emotivo cuando le enseñas a una madre las imágenes de sus pequeños y se les saltan las lagrimas”. “Working for VIVA has literally changed my life and opened so many doors for me because I now also have lots of commercial clients like El Corte Inglés El Capricho Home Decoration, La Cala Golf Resort, Alhaurín Golf and many more.” Jorge uses a full-frame Nikon camera, plus of course a Mac and printer. “Other photographers tell me I’m mad to shoot raw rather than in jpeg format, because it’s so time-consuming. I tell them that the day my phone stops ringing, maybe I’ll consider it!” Passionate about photography – some might it even call it an obsession, but only in a good way – Jorge has never looked back since joining VIVA. Last year he had his rst exhibition, at Casino Marbella, and currently he’s preparing “images of Marbella as you’ve never seen it before” for an upcoming showcase at Cortijo Miraaores. “One day, when Sophia’s grown up, I’d love to do travel photography. Creating photographic art – images that people would be proud to hang on their wall – is another long-term ambition. Even if I were a millionaire, I’d still be working as a photographer,” he adds, grinning from ear to ear. You’d better believe it.

"Comencé haciendo reportajes de boda para mis amigos, y también de sus bebés. Me llegaron varios encargos gracias a las recomendaciones boca a boca. Es un momento muy emotivo cuando le enseñas a una madre las imágenes de sus pequeños y se le saltan las lágrimas". En 2009, cuando Jorge y su esposa Rachel ya tenían una hija de 2 años, Sophia, VIVA buscaba un fotógrafo. Jorge vio el anuncio en la prensa local, se presentó y... obtuvo el trabajo. "Conservo el recorte del anuncio en mi tablón", nos connesa. "Trabajar en VIVA cambió completamente mi vida. Me abrió tantas puertas que ahora tengo innumerables clientes comerciales, como El Corte Inglés Home & Decoration El Capricho, La Cala Golf Resort, Alhaurín Golf y muchos más". Jorge utiliza una Nikon full frame, además de un Mac e impresora. "Otros fotógrafos me dicen que estoy loco por el hecho de tirar fotos en formato raw en lugar de en jpg, ya que requiere muchísimo tiempo procesarlas así. Pero yo les respondo que el día que mi teléfono deje de sonar, consideraré esa opción". Apasionado por la fotografía, casi rayano en una bien entendida obsesión, Jorge no echa de menos su trayectoria anterior a VIVA. El año pasado expuso por primera vez en el Casino Marbella y actualmente prepara "imágenes de Marbella como no la habéis visto antes", para una muestra en el Cortijo Miraaores. "Algún día, cuando crezca Sophia, me encantaría hacer fotografía de viajes. La creación de arte fotográáco, de piezas que la gente colgara con orgullo en sus paredes, es otra aspiración a largo plazo. Porque incluso si fuese rico, trabajaría de fotoógrafo", concluye sonriendo de oreja a oreja. ¡Eso es ver la vida con enfoque!

Just an hour’s drive inland from the Coast – surrounded by the muted greens and ochres of olive groves and wheat elds – a vast lake appears out of the blue. Except, hang on a minute, it’s… pink. Must be a trick of the light, or a gment of your imagination, right? Wrong! Welcome to Fuente de Piedra, Europe’s second largest amingo breeding ground after France’s famous Camargue.

Flamencos: crónica rosa Nos encontramos en el interior, a una hora de la costa y rodeados de solemnes olivares y campos de cereal. El paisaje se dibuja en verde y ocre hasta que se descubre una inmensa laguna. Pero... no es azul. ¡Es rosa! ¿Es un efecto de la luz, tal vez un espejismo? Es Fuente de Piedra, el segundo refugio de amencos de Europa tras la célebre Camargue francesa.

hink amingos and it conjures up the dreamlike image of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland where these fabulously exotic creatures were ingeniously transformed into croquet mallets so the Queen of Hearts could play her favourite sport. While fortunately that’s only ction, amingos have had a pretty tough time of it nonetheless. Once hunted by the Romans – who considered their tongues to be a delicacy – in more recent years their survival has been increasingly threatened by the relentless global

advance of agriculture and industry. Luckily, in 1984, the Andalusian Government stepped in, transforming into a Natural Reserve the saltwater lagoon the birds had been ocking to for millennia. Although they’re big – the Greater Flamingo typically weighs in at between 2 to 4kg and can stand up to 187cm tall – they’re also very vulnerable. In the Camargue their nests are frequently decimated by seagulls, and in some parts of Spain wild boar are all too often the culprits.

Los amencos, criaturas fabulosas sin par, se convertían en mazos de croquet para que la Reina de Corazones pudiese practicar su deporte favorito. Por suerte, es tan sólo cción, pero así y todo un enrevesado papel para nuestros protagonistas. Los romanos los cazaban, ya que la lengua de amenco se consideraba una exquisitez. Y en tiempos más recientes, su supervivencia se ha visto amenazada por el implacable avance de la agricultura y la industria.
Afortunadamente, en 1984 el gobierno andaluz intervino y convirtió en Reserva Natural la laguna salada a la que han acudido en bandadas estas aves desde hace milenios. Aunque son pájaros grandes, el amenco común normalmente pesa entre 2 y 4 kg y puede llegar a medir 1,87 m, también se muestran muy vulnerables. En la Camargue sus nidos son diezmados con frecuencia por las gaviotas y en alguna zona de España los jabalíes se convierten en sus depredadores. Pero la laguna de Fuente de Piedra es un entorno perfecto para estos vertebrados de pluma coloreada, e a quienes los antiguos egipcios consideraban el ave fénix.

But the Fuente de Piedra lake is just about perfect for the ame-feathered birds that ancient Egyptians believed to be the phoenix. At 6.5km long and 2.5km wide, it’s the largest natural lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, is completely fenced-in and, taking its responsibility as custodian very seriously indeed, the Junta de Andalucía’s Ministry for the Environment has also made it a no-go zone for aircraft ying at an altitude of less than 6,000ft. Heralding the arrival of spring, the amingos typically start to arrive at the rain-fed lake in late February and if the conditions are right – the water needs to be at least 35cm deep – they just keep coming, staying on until high summer. According to conservation director Manuel Rendón, as many as 20,000 pairs will breed here this year. To put into perspective just what a key role this lagoon plays, between 1986 (when records began) and 2009, a grand total of 238,518 pairs had between them successfully reared 135,759 chicks. The best time to see the colonies of birds is either early morning or late evening. Flamingos can y up to 1,000km without touching down, and as the water in the lake gradually dries up in the summer, they take off at night to forage for food for their young in Andalucía’s world-famous Doñana National Park – a round trip of 160km as the crow, or rather amingo, ies. In fact, between sunset and sunrise, many will make the return jou journey twice over in order to feed their hungry offspring.

Annual tagging of the chicks – carried out by some 400 biologists and ornithologists from the Estación Biológica de Doñana and Málaga University – usually takes place in August. Flamingos can have a life span of more than 40 years, and thanks to this programme, part of an international initiative, birds hatched in Málaga have been spotted as far aaeld as Mauretania, Senegal and Turkey. They return to the Costa del Sol to breed year in, year out. If getting up close and personal with nature is your kind of thing, visit the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra between February and August. You’ll be tickled pink… HOW TO GET THERE Head inland on the Málaga – Sevilla highway (A92), and you’ll nd both the picture postcard village of Fuente de Piedra and its breathtaking lake 19km north of Antequera.
Con 6,5 km de largo y 2,5 de ancho, Fuente de Piedra es la laguna natural más grande de la península. Está completamente vallada y, tomándose muy en serio su función de preservar el entorno, la Consejería de la Junta de Andalucía de Medio Ambiente incluso ha prohibido el vuelo a una altura menor de unos 1800 metros. Los amencos anuncian la llegada de la primavera. Empiezan a llegar en torno a nales de Febrero, cuando la laguna ha alcanzado su plenitud tras las lluvias. Y si las condiciones son las adecuadas, esto es, que el agua sobrepase los 35 cm de profundidad, las aves siguen llegando y se quedan hasta entrado el verano. El director de conservación, Manuel Rendón, prevé que unas 20.000 parejas crien aquí durante 2011. Para dar una idea de la relevancia del paraje, entre 1986 (cuando comenzaron los registros) hasta 2009, un total de 238.518 parejas criaron con éxito 135.759 polluelos. La mejor hora para avistar las colonias de pájaros es por la mañana temprano o al nal de la tarde. Los amencos pueden volar hasta 1.000 km sin posarse en tierra, de modo que conforme el lago se va secando en verano, levantan el vuelo por las noches y buscan el alimento para sus crías en el Parque Nacional de Doñana, un trayecto de 160 km. De hecho, entre el atardecer y el amanecer, algunos harán dos veces el itinerario para nutrir a su hamb hambrienta prole.

Unos 400 biólogos y ornitólogos de la Estación Biológica de Doñana y la Universidad de Málaga efectúan el anillamiento anual de los polluelos, normalmente en Agosto. Los amencos pueden vivir más de 40 años y, gracias a este programa, que forma parte de una iniciativa internacional, los ejemplares que han incubado en Málaga pueden señalarse en lugares remotos como Mauritania, Senegal y Turquía. Aunque año tras año vuel vuelven a la Costa del Sol para reproducirse. Si el contacto cercano con la naturaleza es tu fuerte, te recomendamos visitar Laguna de Piedra entre Febrero y Agosto. ¡Seguro que ves las cosas de color de rosa!
