Shedding more light on Sheffield street transformation

The upgrading of Sheffield’s 68,000 street lights to new LED models is the only one of its kind in the country - with San Franciso having a similar approach.

That’s according to the man in

charge of Sheffield Council’s ambitious project to replace every single street light in the city with new LED bulbs.

The project is planned to be completed by 2017, and so far 24,000 lights have been replaced in about two years. But it’s not been as simple as changing a light bulb…

Residents have complained about long delays, and open holes on their streets, while South East Sheffield MP Clive Betts publicly questioned the performance of council contractor Streets Ahead.

Now council bosses have shed more light on the complex work

going on behind the scenes.

Each street has a bespoke lighting scheme designed to meet national standards, which means some street light columns may be removed and extras installed.

Ian Kirby, technical manager for Sheffield Council, said: “People view lighting columns like Marmite - they like having one near their house for security or they hate it blocking their view.

“We do try to locate them at boundaries of properties where possible.”

Lights have to be designed around standards and visible structures such as walls and

houses. And sometimes records about their location can be out of date.

This means teams are in the dark until digging begins, and if cables are found to be faulty, deeper or in a different location than expected district network operators must investigate.

Some cables have been encased in concrete since World War Two. “This is sometimes why some holes are open for a little bit longer than we would like,” said Graeme Symonds, project director.

ent designs and the production team must work six months in advance as they take three months to produce.

Moving a new lighting column is difficult without impacting on the entire street.

Graeme said the zonal approach - where one area of the city is given new lights and road surfaces at the same time - had made things more ‘challenging’ but most issues had been resolved.

He added: “I never thought it was this complex.

“Joe Public might equate it to changing a lightbulb at home, it’s not. We are restricted in so many ways above and below ground.”

An investigation is underway into the cause of a blaze at an Indian takeaway in Sheffield.

The blaze at Taj Indian Takeaway on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, was reported to emergency services in the early hours of the morning in February. Crews from Rivelin, Elm Lane and Central fire stations in Sheffield all responded to 999 calls about the blaze.

When they arrived they found the property well alight.

The kitchen was badly damaged and smoke had filtered into the flat above, which was empty at the time.

Police officers cordoned off the premises this morning while an examination was carried out.

A total of 49 properties will be knocked down on Greasboro Road at Tinsley, with a further 11 in Wincobank also scheduled to go to make room for the HS2 rail route.

Residents are demanding fair compensation and some want to see a plot of land set aside for them elsewhere in the city to rebuild their community in a new location.

It was first announced in 2013 that some houses on Greasbro Road may need to be demolished, but further details were revealed in a public meeting at Tinsley Community Centre where residents were informed all of them will be knocked down under the current plans.

Sheffield South MP Clive Betts, who attended the meeting, said he supports the HS2 project but is concerned about its impact on residents. He commented: “I personally believe the scheme of compensation for people on Greasbro Road is not sufficient.

People can’t sell a house there and buy a house somewhere else very easily.

“I don’t want to see houses demolished. We need to build more houses. But the problem is we also need a good transport system in this country.

“You can’t build it without affecting some properties.”

Under the current route proposals, due to be approved towards the end of this year, Sheffield’s new HS2 station will be based at Meadowhall – meaning the 60 homes need to be removed.

Building will not start until 2022 at the earliest, with trains not due to start running on the new line until the early 2030s.

Because the route is yet to be finalised, full details of what compensation will be paid have not yet been confirmed.

But an exceptional hardship scheme for residents with ‘an urgent need to move’ is already running, allowing residents to sell their properties to the government at its market value.

The meeting was told by HS2 officials “residents may be offered the full market price for their home, plus an extra 10 per cent of its value, under the full compensation scheme”.

One resident, who has lived on the street for 20 years, said: “It is a nice community and I can’t get that anywhere else in Sheffield.

want to be able to buy a similar type house.”

He asked whether it would be possible to set aside land for residents to live next door to each other.

“It is about the community,” he said.

“I understand progress is progress but we are affected directly.

The train is coming through my living room whether I like it or not.”

“When they do start the work, we want to relocate somewhere similar. I don’t want to lose our quality of life.”

Is the Den Past its best-before date?

Local investors snap opportunity to back Yorkshire e-retailer Approved Food from the ‘Dragons’ jaws Two Yorkshire business men have joined the ranks of the country’s most successful Den rejects after the Dragons turned down the opportunity to back their budding online-only discount retail store Approved Food, which went on to receive more than double the investment elsewhere.

Despite positive feedback on the Dragons Den episode, which aired on Sunday, February 8th, from both Jones and Linney – who bought in to the concept of the business - after a gruelling two hour session in the infamous warehouse all of the Dragons declared they were ‘out’.

But the lack of backing didn’t keep Approved Food founder and director Dan Cluderay and fellow Director Andy Needham down for long, with the business securing in excess of £400,000 from investors in and around Yorkshire since the show was filmed in May last year, resulting in impressive growth and expansion.

Now the UK’s largest online-only discount retailer, in 2014 www. approvedfood.co.uk shipped around 115,000 orders to tens of thousands of people across the country – resulting in a combined saving of more than £8.1million for its customers.

A unique business model that specialises in short-dated and residual stock food and drinks products sourced directly from manufacturers and wholesalers; despite being told by one Dragon that they should consider rebranding to ‘Old Food’, the experience has left entrepreneur Dan wondering if it is the Den that is ‘past its best-before-date’.

He said: “The Den was an interesting experience, and I am glad to have done it, but we went in asking for a £150k investment for a 10% stake in our businesses

and it was quickly apparent that the Dragons simply didn’t get what we were about.

“At one point we were criticised for having too low profit margins, but that is exactly what Approved Food is built on – value and convenience for our customers who are our priority.

Looking back, talking to multimillionaires about saving a few quid on their weekly shop was perhaps a bit naive.”

Since Dan’s Den experience the Yorkshire born ex-market trader says the business has gone from strength to strength, with external investment totalling in excess of £400k resulting in the launch of two new brands, as well as the expansion of the company warehouse and workforce.

“In September we moved in to our new premises,” he said.

“We introduced a totally new operating system, recruited more staff, launched two new brands and saw record sales all within a matter of weeks.

“We’re delighted by the investment we have received since filming took place, which has enabled us to expand our offering whilst maintaining our core

A Sheffield Wednesday fan who won a unique collection of Owls prizes on Boxing Day has donated his Half Season Ticket to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

Young Owl Evan Copeland, aged seven, hit the jackpot when he found the Golden Ticket inside his matchday programme.

A single edition produced for the Blackpool clash contained the Golden Ticket and Evan was lucky enough to be the one who found it!

As well as the Half Season Ticket, the Golden Ticket granted Evan an array of Wednesday goodies, including a fully signed home and away shirt, matchday hospitality, a subscription to Wednesday Player – and the whole package presented by a player of his choice.

Already a Season Ticket holder, Evan and dad Richard decided to donate his Half Season Ticket to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice – official charity partner of the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme.

Owls star Jose Semedo made the presentation last Saturday to Evan, who in turn handed the Half Season Ticket to young patient Courtney, representing Bluebell Wood.

The ticket will allow a Bluebell Wood patient and carer to attend

every game at Hillsborough for the rest of the season, with the Community Programme generously doubling the prize!

Gail Smedley from Bluebell Wood said: “Thank you so much to Evan and to Sheffield Wednesday for donating the tickets to Bluebell Wood. It will give me the opportunity to bring someone to each match who wouldn’t normally get to go due to their illness or condition.

“Last week I brought along one of our patients, Courtney - she really enjoyed herself and it was her first ever football match!

We’d love to invite Evan and his family to the hospice so he can meet some of the people who will be using the tickets.”

The Owls’ Director of Communications Trevor Braithwait added: “The Golden Ticket certainly captured the imagination of our supporters, who bought the programme in their droves on Boxing Day. “We were delighted for Evan when he contacted us to claim his prize and even more pleased when he and Richard decided to donate the Half Season Ticket to Bluebell Wood.

Curvaceous Georgina Grogan, a 20-year-old blogger from Parsons Cross, is now the face of new High Street Plus Size clothing collection, Scarlett & Jo for Evans.

Your Sheffield News meets the award winning fashion and beauty writer turned model, to find out how she feels about representing a leading national retailer…

When did you first discover an interest in fashion and beauty?

From quite a young age to be honest. I would watch my Mum put on her makeup and want to look like her. I started wearing mascara at around 11 and then with fashion, that did take me a little longer. Being bigger meant it wasn’t the easiest to find nice clothes at a young age that would fit properly and flatter my shape.

Eventually I made things work for me by adding belts and broadening my fashion search to different brands.

You’re a self-taught makeup artist. Did you learn mostly through YouTube?

I did a lot of trial and error to start, just mainly painting my face and seeing where I ended up.

However, if there was something I couldn’t figure out, I would definitely head over YouTube to watch and learn. There are some amazing videos on there and I picked things up very easily, thankfully!

What inspired you to start a blog?

I’ve always loved writing and the beauty world, so I decided to combine the two! It actually took a little persuasion and encouragement from a Customer from when I used to work back at Lush actually, she told me I looked like a plus size blogger and I mentioned how I always wanted to get into having my own blog. So I went home and started! I always thank her whenever passing in Meadowhall now!

When did you launch the blog and how has it grown since day one?

I launched in June 2013 and it took off massively to my absolute

surprise. I was even being approached by companies just a couple weeks into setting up my blog which back then, I didn’t understand why they wanted to even work with me. I now work with companies all over the globe and my views actually go up by the day. It’s incredible to see something I love doing and I’ve worked so hard on to do so well and that people actually enjoy reading what I have to say and want more and more of it!

reality and I was asked to be a part of a blogger shoot down in London which was an incredible experience and a day I will never forget. After the shoot he asked if I would be the Face of the Scarlett & Jo and I was so honoured. I now love visiting the Scarlett & Jo section on Evans to see my face!

How did the shoot go?

The shoot was absolutely incredible, we all got to wear the dresses that were designed for us, and try on the others too! It was such a relaxing and chilled out day at a beautiful Georgian venue called Home House in London.

We were fed and watered whilst swanning around in beautiful dresses in a huge suite where we got ready and had our photos taken in there too. Home House is honestly one of the most beautiful places and it was a dream to be able to spend the day there.

The group of bloggers I was with are the most amazing and inspiring people and it was lovely getting to know them better.

Which other bloggers do you admire?

This is such a difficult question as there are so many and new ones that I read and fall in love with all the time! I follow and look at an incredibly diverse group of bloggers who I admire and who inspire me daily

Your blog, She Might Be Loved, was the winner of the Plus Size Award for Best Fashion Blog in November 2014. It must be humbling to see your hard work recognised?

Which models do you most admire?

I was blown away to even be nominated, but then to actually win was something completely different. I had never heard of the Plus Size Awards until I was nominated and that feeling is something I will never forget.

It’s overwhelmingly amazing to think that people know and enjoy reading you to the point where enough think you deserve to be recognised for it. My award now sits proudly in my room!

I really love Ashley Graham, I had always seen photos of her and thought she was absolutely stunning but it wasn’t until recently that I learnt her name and can now stalk her on Instagram!

What’s next for you?

It seems to have been a big year already but I really just want to keep going and hopefully doing more exciting things like the blogger shoot! I’m hoping to work with a lot more companies in 2015 with exciting collaborations and making my content even funner and more exciting for my readers! I’m really looking forward to what this year has in store!

What has been the response from the public and specifically Plus Size girls?

Nothing but positive which I am eternally grateful for. I now have people say that they want to look like me, which I’ve never experienced before and it’s kind of weird to hear when a lot of people consider my size as a bad thing! It’s heart-warming in the sense that people don’t see my size as a negative at all even though I am putting myself out there for anyone to judge, instead they just love my outfits, how I style things and want to know where I shop!

How did your modelling career begin?

I wouldn’t say it’s a modelling career as it has just been the once so far (and a failed attempt which I don’t really talk about),

Sheffield’s Dirty Stop Out turns his attention to London Words by: Jessica Fogarty

‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide’ author Neil Anderson celebrates 20 years of writing about local nightlife by turning his sights on London…

He originally launched the project in Sheffield in 1995 as guide to nightclubs then Neil Anderson launched his first retro edition, the ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield’, in 2011.

The book became a Waterstones best seller and went on to become famous nationally as the title that persuaded Chris and Ann Jackson to remarry after 26 years apart.

The couple married in 1977 but they lost contact after their marriage broke down seven years

later in 1984. Now, the pair are smitten once again - and planning to remarry - after a picture of their wedding night was published in this local book.

Mum-of-two Ann was just 17 when she fell head over heels in love with Chris, who was then 23.

They married four years later but divorced after seven years. Ann moved to Sheffield but Chris, now 60, stayed in Wrexham, North Wales to run his family haulage business.

Chris never re-married and vowed to cherish the memories of the time he spent with his ‘one true love’ all those years ago.

The pair finally met again when a picture of the young couple’s wedding night at their local bierkeller appeared in the Dirty Stop Out’s Guide To 1970s Sheffield.

The pair attended the book’s launch party earlier this year and immediately rekindled their passion.

Chris said: ‘I only ever had one love, and that was Ann. I swore never to marry again and I kept my promise for all those years. I was breathless when I saw her.’

Ann, who has since remarried then divorced again, said: ‘It was love at first sight all those years ago and we were head over heels.’

She said they drifted apart and she remarried but ‘nothing could ever match those memories of the Seventies and Chris who was my first love’.

Ann, who has a son Joshua, 20, and daughter Ellie, 14, added: ‘When we met up again it was as though all those years had just melted away. We couldn’t stop talking and it was obvious we were still in love.’

Guest of honour at the wedding will be unintentional matchmaker Neil Anderson who compiled the book.

He said: ‘There were hundreds of photos I could have put in, but the one that caught my eye was Chris and Ann in the unlikely setting of a bierkeller.’

This book was followed by the ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Sheffield’ which was written with help from ‘Mr Nightclub’ himself, Peter Stringfellow, and the biographer of his ‘60s venues, Dave Manvell. Further editions to the 1950s, 1980s and 1990s have followed.

The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s London’ is set to tell the story of the ‘Swinging’ decade through the personal memories and photos of hundreds of people that lived through it.

Neil Anderson said: “The book will go beyond the well worn voices of the era’s cultural aristocracy and include the lesser known stories of the people that were swept away by the excitement of the scene; those that were queuing for autographs, those that never made the guest lists and those that bought the records that turned the era’s music makers into enduring stars.

“No city came close to London in the 1960s. It was the fashion and popular music capital of the world. It was Cool Britannia decades before Tony Blair brought the Gallagher’s into No 10 Downing Street. If you weren’t lucky enough to live amongst it, odds on you were drawn to making the pilgrimage from the provinces - or overseas in many cases - to see what all the fuss was about.”

Though Neil Anderson was too young to remember the 1960s, he has an endless fascination with its allure.

“I’ve written about the ‘60s scene in Sheffield and I thought it about time I got to the heart of the matter in London.”

Housing plan for giant paper mill site

A former paper mill could soon be turned into housing and offices after the 110 acre site was put on the market.

Oughtibridge Mill was closed with the loss of more than 150 jobs after it was confirmed it would shut last year.

The site is now being marketed to prospective developers, with potential uses including housing and commercial property.

Any new uses for the site would have to be approved by council planners. The sale includes 350,000 sq ft of warehousing, factory and office buildings.

A spokesman for the Swedish site owners SCA said: “The mill’s closure was announced in 2014 after paper production had ceased in 2007.

“Since then the site has been

subject to extensive remediation, including some demolition and decommissioning as well as environmental and planning discussions and both Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Sheffield City Council have produced pre-application reports that will be available to prospective purchasers.”

Originally known as Spring Grove Paper Mill, the site was established in 1871 and went on to become one of the area’s largest employers, employing several thousand people at its peak.

Those selling the site have told developers planners at Sheffield and Barnsley Councils hope to see ‘community benefits’ offered as part of redevelopment plans, including use of sports fields and

the creation of new footpaths and cycle ways.

In August, Paul Oliver, SCA programme manager said: “An important part of the brief is that, as an ethical company, we want to exit the site responsibly and with consideration for the views of the local community and of the environment.”

The Swedish firm took over the mill site after buying Georgia Pacific’s European operation in 2012.

Paper production at the mill ceased after the 2007 floods, leaving only processing and packaging of paper brought in from another mill in Lancashire.

£10m Sheffield technical college to open in September Words by: Jessica Fogarty

Youngsters will get skills for ‘high-quality careers’ when Sheffield’s second university technical college opens, it is claimed.

The £10 million facility is due to open in September next year as part of £55 million plans for the city’s Olympic Legacy Park, on the former Don Valley Stadium site in Attercliffe.

Known as UTC 2 Sheffield for Human Sciences and Computing, it will train young people aged 14 to 19 in the skills needed for the healthcare technology, sports science, exercise medicine and wellbeing sectors.

A seven-week consultation has been launched into the plans, led

by Sheffield College alongside Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Andrew Cropley, college executive director for strategic planning and business development, urged people to share their views.

He said: “The healthcare, sports science and computing sectors are vital to the future of this region.

“This facility will develop the next generation’s skills supporting business growth and providing young people with high-quality careers.

“Recruiting the number of students will be our biggest challenge. It’s persuading youngsters

to leave the school and friends they have known for three years and make the leap to come and study with us in this brilliant new place.

“There are 5,500 students who will be in the right age brackets in Sheffield and we think that if they all find out about it, there will be enough who think it is the right decision for them.”

Students at the UTC will work towards GCSE, A-level and technical qualifications, while working alongside professional athletes and health and sports science experts.

Sheffield tram plan Words by: Jessica Fogarty

Plans for a new section of rail that will allow European-style Tram Trains to run between Britain’s rail and tram network for the first time are out for consultation.

Network Rail is planning to build a new section of track in Sheffield to link the city’s Supertram to the train line.

Local residents, landowners, rail and tram passengers are invited to comment on the construction plans for 150 metres of track that will link the railway and Stagecoach Supertram networks at Tinsley.

The project was approved by the government in 2012 and forms part of the Sheffield City Region Devolution Deal. The partners in the Tram Train project are Network Rail, Department for Transport, Northern Rail, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Stagecoach Supertram.

Tram Trains will provide a direct service between Sheffield city centre, Rotherham Central train station and Parkgate retail park.

Tram Trains will use the existing Supertram route between Cathedral and Meadowhall South and then move onto the rail network via the proposed new track to Parkgate.

The chord will need: 150 metres of new track with associated ground work Overhead line equipment to carry the power to the Tram Trains Line Side equipment including

a small new building to house electrical equipment.

An application for a Transport Work Act Order (TWAO) will be submitted to the secretary of state for transport in spring 2015. There will be a further public consultation as part of this process. Depending upon the TWAO process and decision, work to construct the chord is expected to start in spring 2016 and take eight months to complete.

Network Rail area director Warrick Dent said: “This is an exciting stage of the project as we consult on plans which, if approved, will turn years of meticulous planning into Britain’s first operational Tram Train service.

This will improve journeys between Sheffield and Rotherham and boost the local economy by giving improved access to jobs, education and leisure activities as well as directly creating around 35 new jobs.

“Tram Trains are a common sight in Europe and we believe they could help to improve journey options for passengers around our towns and cities.

Even though the Tram Trains run elsewhere, we have had many complex issues to work through with our partners in the project to make sure that the vehicles can operate safely in Britain without causing unnecessary disruption to regular tram and rail passengers.”

Last filling station out of Sheffield to be replaced with retail store Words by: Jessica Fogarty

Plans to knock down ‘the last filling station’ on a way out of Sheffield and replace it with a small retail store are set to be approved – despite objections.

Residents fear the proposals for the station on Manchester Road, Crosspool, will cause extra traffic and noise and affect parking and highway safety. Others said local independent traders could lose out and the store was not needed.

Two petitions have been submitted to Sheffield Council, the planning authority, opposing the scheme – from residents and for-

mer Liberal Democrat councillor Shaffaq Mohammed.

A report to councillors ahead of a meeting next week to decide on the scheme says one objection was: ‘This is the last filling station on the A57 before Glossop so it will be an inconvenience to motorists.’

Another was: “This is one of the few areas in the city without a large national store.”

In their report, council planning officers say the nine car parking spaces planned for the store would usually be sufficient and disruption to traffic flow was ‘unlikely’ as many vehicles already used the petrol station.

Concerns about arrangements for delivery vehicles had let to plans being amended so they will not park on Manchester Road.

Construction work has begun on a new shopping centre on the site of a former Sheffield steelworks.

The £42-million Fox Valley scheme in Stocksbridge should be ready in spring 2016 and could create up to 900 jobs.

Construction firm Henry Boot has begun work on the main retail and office buildings on the 28-acre site.

To celebrate the milestone, pupils from Stocksbridge Junior School were due to bury a time capsule, containing information about life in Stocksbridge and the history

of the area, at the site today.

Hundreds of balloons will also be released to celebrate the start of the building work, which will create 25 new retail units, cafés, restaurants offices and 114 homes.

The development is being delivered by Barnsley-based Dransfield Properties.

Mark Dransfield, managing director of the firm, said: “It’s great for everyone involved in the project to see the development reach this stage.

“A great deal of hard work has

gone into getting to this point and to see that come to fruition and start to take shape is fantastic.

“This is an important scheme for this part of Sheffield – we are not only bringing jobs and investment, but effectively a new town centre.”

Leigh Bramall, Sheffield Council cabinet member for business, said: “It is fantastic to see this important milestone marked for a development that will bring hundreds of new jobs.”

Nellie’s centenary celebrations an example to us all remember at Broomgrove for a Words by: Jessica Fogarty

100-year-old Nellie Bennett proved you’re never too old to enjoy a good knees up!

In fact Broomgrove Nursing Home’s oldest and longest standing resident enjoyed her birthday so much she’s already looking forward to her 110th!

Staff got Nellie in the mood for the arrival of guests eager to celebrate her 100th birthday with a complimentary facial and champagne.

Nellie has lived in sheltered accommodation at Broomgrove Nursing Home for the past 17 years and enjoys one of the most active life of any of the residents.

Her memories of life in old Sheffield have been especially pertinent in recent months as she can still remember 1918 Armistice celebrations in the city.

Then living on Petre Street in Pitsmoor, it was her earliest memory. She said: “We had an open yard and I could see lots of people hugging

and kissing. I remember I was wearing a white coat and frock. It was a sunny day and everybody was drinking tea”.

But far more vivid are her recollections of the next war and the Sheffield Blitz in December 1940.

She said: “I can still remember parents and their children coming into the shelter screaming.

We lived opposite Ellesmere Road School in Pitsmoor and spent Blitz night in the boiler house of the school. The noise of the bombs got gradually worse and the ground would shake - I can still remember the ‘whooshing’ sound they made.

“I slept on a door that night and had to go to walk to work the next day. The devastation was terrible.”

Donna Pierpoint, the manager of the home, said: “It’s so wonderful to have someone like Nellie living with us. She has led an interesting life and is a true inspiration for all of us here.

“She enjoyed a wonderful birthday and it’s a day I think we’ll

long time.”

A brave young girl undergoing treatment for cancer has raised thousands of pounds to thank a charity that gave accommodation to her parents as she underwent lifesaving surgery last year.

Laura Powell, 10, from Balby, Doncaster, raised £8000 earlier this week by hosting a ‘Bake Me Better’ bake sale and coffee morning in her local community hall as a thanks to The Sick Children’s Trust, which gave her parents a room to stay at Treetop House as she underwent surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumour.

Last November Laura was rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital to be treated for Medulloblastoma, a brain tumour which affects the central nervous system. The room provided at Treetop gave parents, Annette and Mark, direct lift access to the hospital within minutes, rather than travelling 20 miles to be by their daughter’s side. Laura, who returns to the Sheffield Children’s hospital every six weeks to undergo chemotherapy, says: “Without the help from The Sick Children’s Trust, Dad would have had to drive home from Sheffield to Doncaster every night as only one parent could stay overnight in the hospital.

“Having my parents there by my side everyday was absolutely fantastic; it really helped me stay positive when I was feeling quite poorly.”

Mum Annette says: “It may not sound that far from Sheffield to Doncaster, but every minute counts when your child is in hospital. We felt so lucky to be able to stay together as a family at Treetop House and the hospital

of the day or night.

“The amount Laura has raised from the coffee morning is absolutely incredible, we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who popped along to St Catherine’s and made a donation. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to Adam Peters from HSBC for a very generous matched donation of £2500.”

Treetop House is one of 10 ‘Homes from Home’ around the country which The Sick Children’s Trust operates in order to keep families together through the worst of times. Treetop House is one of two houses in Sheffield which support families whose children are being treated at Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital.

House Operations Manager Sue Cartwright says: “What Laura and her family have done is absolutely incredible. It was wonderful to meet Laura at the event and I was so impressed at her courage as she starts her chemo a week on Monday. She’s a little star! It costs us £28 per night to provide emotional and practical accommodation for a family, so as you can imagine, the money the family have raised will make a huge difference to the charity and other families who use our services.”

The Sick Children’s Trust aims to keep families together when children are being treated in hospital far from home. The service is free of charge and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mum with Myeloma clinks cups over cake with devoted daughters In 2013, mother of two and devout business woman Jaqui Copley from Sheffield took to the stage at the Sheffield City Hall with high hopes of raising money for her local cancer hospital.

Having had no previous connections with Weston Park Hospital, Jaqui bravely stepped out into the spotlight as part of the hospitals dedicated charity’s stand up comedy event, Funny Business.

But little did Jaqui know, on receiving her victorious winners’ trophy that night, that in a cruel twist of fate, over the next year, the charity and hospital would play a much bigger, less humorous part in her life.

In March 2014, 56 year old Jaqui started to experience extreme rib pain and feeling concerned, she visited her GP before being referred to Weston Park Hospital for a CT scan in July.

Despite her understandable concerns, Jaqui immersed herself in the fashion distribution business that she had spent years developing. But just a couple of days later, she was given the devastating diagnosis of a rare and incurable bone marrow cancer called Myeloma.

“It was 2 days before my youngest daughter, Alison’s wedding when I received the news.” Said Jaqui “Despite my physical and emotional pain, I just wanted to stay strong for Alison and enjoy the special day beside family and friends.”

“I put my heels on and danced the night away, trying my best to put on a brave face.

Although I told my eldest daughter all about the diagnosis after the wedding, I decided it was only fair not to tell Alison until after her honeymoon.”

She continued, “I can’t quite put in to words how I felt at the time as it was such a whirlwind of emotions, but I have nothing but praise for Weston Park Hospital and the Haematology Team at the Hallamshire Hospital for the exceptional level of care they have provided since day one.”

Myeloma, for which there is currently no cure, is a cancer arising from plasma cells, a type of white blood cell which is made in the bone marrow. In the wake of her shocking diagnosis, Jaqui and her family have vowed to raise more money and awareness for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

Throughout 2015 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer.

The cancer charity’s sustained investment into research this year, in collaboration with the wider cancer network, will enable local studies to be carried out within the hospital, as part of the integrated fight against cancer worldwide.

who is the managing director of a fashion distribution business, The Elite Group, has now handed over her role to eldest daughter, Nicola, who has shown unwavering support for her Mum at such a time of need.

Jaqui continued, “It’s funny in a way that I knew the importance of having specialised cancer services on our doorsteps a year ago when I chose to support the charity’s stand up comedy event, Funny Business.

Since diagnosis last summer, Jaqui has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments on a clinical trial, before undergoing a huge stem cell operation just last month at the Hallamshire Hospital.

“Now, what I want more than anything is for people across our region to recognise the vital work which is carried out at Weston Park Hospital on daily basis and do what they can to help cancer sufferers like me.”

But in the midst of the turmoil and with the help of her family and close-knit circle of friends, Jaqui has vowed to make this Mothers Day extra special with her girls by looking back on their difficult year whilst making ‘Time for Tea’ in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer

The Old Weighing Room British dining featuring locally sourced Yorkshire fayre Words by: Jessica Fogarty

Located in a picture-perfect destination, The Old Weighing Room is one of the latest dining venues to open in Doncaster.

Set facing the grounds of South Yorkshire town’s iconic racecourse, the intimate venue serves quality British cuisine, featuring a selection of fine Yorkshire ingredients.

It doesn’t have to be a race day for you to visit and savour the unique and traditional surroundings of the racecourse, The Old Weighing Room opens its doors from Thursday to Sunday every week.

We visited for the Sunday lunch sitting available between 12pm – 6pm.

We were seated in the elegant bar area to enjoy our drinks and browse the menus. There’s also seating on an outdoor terrace overlooking the racecourse – we heard a rumour food will be served outdoors during summer 2015.

Our waiter soon arrived back to escort us to our table in the tastefully decorated restaurant which accommodates up to 70 covers.

Despite a transformation from its former purpose at the racecourse, décor at The Old Weighing Room remains in-keeping with the grounds, retaining many of its original features.

A complimentary freshly baked bread roll was served on arrival while we awaited our first course orders.

Attention to detail is paramount at The Old Weighing Room. The tables are dressed with white linen cloths and each dish is artistically arranged on plate.

Chef Robinson was recruited to run the kitchen at The Old Weighing Room in line with its opening last April, having previously worked for the Jamie Oliver Foundation as a training chef for No.15 restaurant in Cornwall.

The seasonal menu has a varied selection – to start, choose from treacle cured salmon, pressed pork and rabbit terrine, honey roast parsnip soup, wild mushrooms on toast, or the crayfish cocktail.

We opted for the terrine served with fig, apple and crackling salad and the crayfish served with Marie Rose sauce and brown bread and butter. Both larger portions than expected bosting a good balance of flavours.

For main course choose between the roast sirloin of beef, Wharfedae lamb hotpot, supreme of chicken chasseur, pheasant and duck pithivier, parmesan crusted cod or roasted vegetable cobbler.

My chicken chausseur – confit leg served with champ mash and baby leeks was near perfect, while my partners beef accompanied with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and red wine

jus was a favourite with most diners in the restaurant.

To finish – if you’ve got the room – choose from a pear and almond tart, iced lemon brulee, trio of chocolate or Yorkshire cheese board. The tart was served with a pear sorbet and clove custard – an impressive combination of textures and flavours; while the trio of chocolates – a Valrhona chocolate brownie, rich chocolate cheesecake and white chocolate brulee – looked and tasted like an award winning dish.

We’ll be back in the summer to sample the menu once again, hopefully in al-fresco-style.

Make Mother’s day special!

Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta

If you’re looking for a delicious and impressive sweet treat to cook this Mother’s Day, look no further than chef Eric Lanlard’s Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta.

Don’t let the exotic name fool you into thinking this decadent dessert is painstakingly difficult, it’s not at all, and even the most basic cook can make this incredibly simple dessert a hit. With only a handful of ingredients, this recipe is not only tasty, but quick and cost effective.

French pâtissier and celebrity chef, Eric Lanlard, is a talented teacher so follow his instructions and learn how to master the art of the Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta.

Recipe 400ml double cream 3½ tbsp golden caster sugar 2 tbsp grappa 3 leaves or 1¼ tsp gelatin 1 tsp Nielsen-Massey vanilla extract or bean paste.

Method:

Put the cream and golden caster sugar in a saucepan and stir over a gentle heat until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes, adding the grappa and Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste or extract.

If you are using gelatine leaves, soak them in cold water until floppy, then squeeze out any excess water. Stir the leaves into the hot cream until they are completely dissolved. If you are using powdered gelatine, sprinkle it onto the hot cream in an even layer and leave it to absorb for a minute, then stir in the cream until dissolved.

Pour the mixture into four 125ml metal or ceramic ramekins.

Cover each with a piece of plastic wrap and refrigerate until set.

Unmould the panna cotta by placing the ramekins briefly into a bowl of hot water and then tipping them gently onto plates.

Even the snow couldn’t stop a Sheffield restaurant raising a bumper amount for charity recently!

Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Peter Rippon, headed the VIP guest list at the first anniversary party of popular city centre restaurant El Paso.

Guests were treated to entertainment courtesy of Sheffield-based Latin act Son Para Todos, buffet and more.

The evening raised £500 for Macmillan with the restaurant donating all bar profits and cash raised on a raffle to the good cause.

El Paso’s Nasir Iqbal said: “I have to say a big thank you to everyone that braved the elements and

made our first anniversary party a night to remember. The event raised a fabulous amount for a charity that is very closes to our hearts and I’m looking forward to second great year at El Paso.”

The restaurant opened in January last year and has enjoyed a string of 5 star reviews, regular live music nights and hosted the

event that helped complete the city’s Women of Steel fundraising campaign.

El Paso was originally in much smaller premises next door but took the plunge and transformed the former Moorfoot Tavern into the now thriving eatery that is open night and day.

Experience Cubana Combining classic Spanish style tapas dishes with South American flare and flavour…

Last year, Cubana Tapas Bar made the brave decision to move premises from their popular Trippet Lane venue to Leopold Square due to growing demand from diners.

The newly located two storey venue now sits in the corner of the central and sophisticated dining quarter of Leopold Square.

Downstairs is a spacious bar area whilst upstairs is a traditional taverna style restaurant.

We visit on a Friday evening and the restaurant is near to full at 8pm so we grab a drink at the bar while we wait to be seated. (Be sure to book a table to guarantee you can dine on time).

The Cubana waiters are in a league of their own entertaining diners with impressive cocktail flaring and salsa dancing.

We’re seated on the end of a long rectangle wooden table, alongside other couples and groups of friends. Cubana has adopted an informal dining approach – just like you’d find in most overseas tapas bars. We like it. It certainly adds to the already social and upbeat atmosphere.

Depending how hungry you

are, the waiter suggests one or two tapas for the peckish or a maximum of five dishes for those who are famished. Choose from appetisers, hot and cold tapas, side dishes or if the decision proves too challenging, order from the set menu.

We opt for six dishes between two of us: Patatas a lo pobre (£3.55) described as lightly spiced potatoes cooked with onions peppers and garlic – but be warned, although moreish the spice was a little hotter than we expected; Res y cebolla (£5.75) – thinly sliced tender sirloin steak sautéed with sweet caramelised red onions; Pollo con guisantes (£5.25) – tender chicken breast pieces cooked with smoked bacon, peppers and peas in a red wine and sweet potato sauce; Albondigas (£4.95) – Cubana’s famous meatballs made with fresh minced beef, coriander and onion served in a red wine sauce; Paella de mariscos (£5.95) – traditional Spanish paella with fresh seafood and saffron rice, sautéed in olive oil with a hint of garlic and fresh basil with optional chorizo sausage; and Calamares a la Andaluza (£5.95) – lightly fried fresh squid cooked to perfection.

The steak had to be the knockout dish however the squid took a close second.

For the best way of sampling the best Cubana has to offer, choose from set menu one (£19.50pp) or set menu two (£23.50pp) and enjoy a share of more than ten

dishes.

Our food bill (without drinks) came to £31.40 – more than reasonable given the plentiful portions and flavoursome food.

Be sure to head to the downstairs bar following dinner for Latino music and salsa dancing. Go get your groove on.

The giraffe concept is simple. It’s about freshly cooked global food in a feel-good venue.

The menu is inspired by the best flavours from around the world – including must-have brunches, stacked high burgers, fresh salads, steak and grills together with hand roasted coffee, healthy smoothies and a selection of cocktails, beers and global wines.

We visited on a mid-week evening and dined from the main menu. For starters, we opted for the corn on the cob – served with fresh red chilli butter & grated Italian style cheese; and

edamame beans – soy bean pods wok fried in soy, chilli and mirin. Delicious and nutritionally balanced. There was also the tempting choice of firecracker chicken tenders, garlic focaccia chips, olives or a mini mezze.

Prices from £2.95-£5.35.

For main course, choose between burgers and sandwiches, grills, pastas, salads and sides. I ordered the chicken, spiced king prawn and mango salad – a deep bowl of grilled spiced prawns and chicken breast, mixed leaves, cucumber, radish, green onion, avocado, mango and chopped Brazil nuts with tequila-lime dressing. One of the best salad choices I’ve seen on a menu in a long time. My dining partner

It’s fair to say 2015 is turning out to be a vintage year for Mitchells Wines as it’s also the businesses’ 80th anniversary year.

Good music plays out while you’re dining and the staff give the venue a chilled vibe whilst remaining professional and

efficient.

Aptly named, Ed’s Easy Diner is a relaxed, retro classic American Diner.

Ok, so you may be situated in Sheffield’s busiest shopping centre but when you hit play on your personal juke box, you step back in time to the 1950s.

We slide into a retro red leather booth and select some Elvis Presley classics while we browse the menu. Choose from more than ten varieties of hamburger, fried chicken, hotdogs, salads and diner favourites including a pulled pork sub plate, the full Ed’s breakfast or heart-warming beef chilli.

If you want to indulge, you’re in for a treat. Dishes are sold ‘solo’ or as an ‘Ed’s Plate’ – with fries, onion, rings and coleslaw.

The chefs are certainly not shy with their portions. Our order of the Ed’s Plate Big Bubba bacon ‘n’ cheese is more than enough for a small elephant. The burger is made from fully traceable Farm Assured beef and grilled to perfection in Ed’s famous toasted sesame seed bun they’ve been serving since 1987.

But if you’re not happy about using your entire daily calorie allowance in one meal, then you’ll be happy to hear there are some female-friendly, calorie-conscious choices on there too.

Choose from Skinny Ed’s – any of the hamburgers served with salad, vinaigrette and no bun; veggie burgers; grilled chicken and salads.

We opt for the chicken Dijon salad – a deep bowl of chicken breast goujons and bacon bits on a bed of romaine lettuce with a honey and mustard dressing.

We like that you can peek through the open kitchen and watch the chefs freshly preparing your meal. It’s clear to see the customer favourites – the team are inundated with orders of bulging beef burgers and towering tumblers of milkshakes.

If you’ve room for dessert then check out the diner’s dessert and milkshake menu. There’s a KitKat choco-lat sundae’, brownies and pancakes Oreo, Peanut Butter and Nutella shake flavours.

I think it’s a great idea. Pubs should be relaxaing and I enjoy a bit of peace and quite with my pint. There’s nothing worse than a TV blaring. I get enough of that at home.

I’ll defintely be voting, but I’m still undecided over which party will get my vote. Every party seems to have good and bad points and the coverage doesn’t help as media companies all have their own agendas.

The media coverage is unfair. The staff are working really hard. I broke my nose just before Christmas and they did a brilliant job, as you can see!

Your Sheffield News puts the spotlight on Totley based business, Prints Charming…

Prints Charming launched in March 2011. Founder, Kathryn, had just returned to work following the birth of her daughter. She was frustrated with her career in a call centre – she felt it wasn’t taking her anywhere.

She’d always had a strong enterprising streak, and she enjoyed being creative in a practical way.

She had just never really found the right outlet to flourish.

Kathryn had seen imprint jewellery from other businesses. She really liked how the items looked as well as the sentiment behind each piece. This got her creative and entrepreneurial juices flowing. After weeks of research in to the process for making the items and how to market them, she was ready.

Business co-owner and husband, Dan, said: “When she told me what she had in mind I wasn’t sure. “We were feeling the pinch financially, and I figured other people would be in the same position.

“Kathryn needed a few hundred pounds for initial material costs and equipment, money she had, but myself and other family members felt it would be best kept in savings.

“She took everyone’s reservations and used it as motivation to prove us all wrong.”

Kathryn is completely self-taught.

She has never received any training for what she does, all her skill is derived from hours of trial and error, refining techniques

and sometimes stumbling across ways to improve her work by accident. She had also never had any training or even previous exposure to any form of marketing.

When she wasn’t making items (and in those first few months she didn’t make a great deal of commissioned orders) she would sit for hour after hour networking. Using Prints Charming’s Facebook page to promote her work. She networked on as many handmade and handcrafting Facebook groups as she could, and also tirelessly promoted her work on selected forums. It was hard work but slowly it started to pay off. The order numbers gained momentum and soon the trickle turned into a torrent.

Before she knew it, people were happily waiting for their items.

She often said it felt surreal that people were actually happy to wait weeks for a piece of jewellery she had made.

remain innovative. She is never happy to just have a set number of stock shapes for customers to choose from. That may seem like an easy option, but Kathryn wanted Prints Charming to stand out from the crowd. One of the first original pieces she designed was ‘Circle of Love’. This is Prints Charmings signature piece and extremely popular. Since then she has launched many more original pieces and continuously creates new designs.

Kathryn also decided to allow people to pay for their items in instalments, making a Prints Charming piece affordable for everyone.

Her passion for the business is evident to all who meet her. In the care and attention she pours into each item of jewellery and also her strong belief that every Prints Charming customer should be treated as though they are the only customer at that time. This attitude has helped

Prints Charming secure a very strong presence in the imprint jewellery market.

Next, Kathryn secured an agreement with the Kiddicare stores for appearances in store to display items and take orders etc. This was initially in two stores and quickly grew to three.

Kathryn realised she may need some help with the logistics of appearing in three stores in different cities so she recruited Prints Charmings first member of staff (on a self-employed basis) to appear in one of the stores for her. Since Kiddicare altered their business model, Prints Charming now appears in four Toys R Us stores (Sheffield, Chesterfield, Derby and Teesside) as well as the sole remaining Kiddicare store in Peterborough. Prints Charming has also recruited a second, self-employed Print Consultant to appear in the Teesside Toys R Us store.

Prints Charming helps a lot of families who have sadly experienced the anguish of losing a loved one. Be that a friend, relative or even family pet. Kathryn has made numerous items for grieving parents of still born babies. In fact they have a special section on the website for these types of orders. All of these customers receive a very sympathetic response, “we will work very closely with them to ensure they get their perfect item” says Dan. He adds: “Business continues to grow and grow. So much so that myself, Mr Cautious who was hesitant of Kathryn’s intentions, left my job in October 2014 and joined the business too.

“I strongly believe it is Kathryn’s unique approach to business behind Prints Charming’s success.

“She will help all of her customers to make sure their item is as close to the image they have in their head as she can. Each customer is treated like a friend rather than a customer and as I mentioned earlier, the attention to detail in all of her work is evident to anyone who sees a Prints Charming piece.

“So, in her attempt to prove myself and everyone else wrong (which she has achieved in bucket loads) she has created a very special business that provides a very unique way for people to capture a moment in time, and so beautifully too.”

Sheffield retailer proves why a bargain will never be past its best-beforedate in the UK

A business built on the British public’s love of a bargain is to roll up the shutters of its 60,000 sq ft Sheffield warehouse to the cameras of an ITV fly on the wall documentary and lift the lid on its unique business model.

Approved Food, the UK’s largest online retailer specialising in groceries that are past its bestbefore-date will become the focus on an ITV documentary, looking at how Brits are saving money on their shopping in today’s economy. The warts-andall documentary will give the viewers an honest insight into how the bargain business is run and the UK’s love of a good deal.

The prime-time documentary ‘Bargain Fever Britain’ delves into the UK’s insatiable appetite for bargains, deals and discounts. The show uses four UK retail giants as a platform to hone into the current UK retail landscape, where paying full price is not considered an option - something which particularly rings true with Approved Food, who are known for their value for money and convenience to

Dan Cluderay, founded Approved Food in 2008 and works alongside Director Andy Needham to build a scalable and fast developing business, dispatching more than 115,000 orders and over nine million items in 2014 alone from their Sheffield warehouse.

The fly-on-the-wall documentary showcases the increase in Approved Food’s popularity, with their relocation to a new 60,000 sq ft warehouse and expansion to more than 50 staff to meet the wider demand of bargains from the UK and Europe.

viewers will also see the inner workings of Approved Food and their principles. As well as providing a bargain to customers the company also strives to prevent food waste, using stock sourced directly from food manufacturers, wholesalers and distributers which may otherwise be disposed of or enter into waste streams for no valid reason.

Learn to move and breathe again with Sheffield Pilates Studio…

Broomhill based studios, Breathe Pilates, are the only fully equipped Pilates studios in Sheffield offering small group Pilates classes on all of the traditional Pilates apparatus.

Founder Lee Miller has been working in the health industry as a therapist over the last ten years – travelling the world to gain the knowledge and expertise she has today.

Lee tells us: “I have studied many different approaches both traditional and holistic, Eastern and Western – attending courses all over the world from Australia to Thailand to India in order to expand my field of knowledge and discover new methods and techniques to adapt into my treatment of each individual.”

I slip off my trainers and leave them at the entrance in the shoe rack before I begin a warm-up with the regulars in the downstairs apparatus room.

Breathe Pilates has become a popular venue with local workers who visit in their lunch break – making a quick change from their suits to their sweats – as well as Mums who want a refreshing mind-body workout

and sports enthusiasts who use Pilates as a means of rehabilitation.

A ballet dancer and mountain climber were both in the lunchtime class I attended – they use Pilates to give them greater strength and muscle tone, improved flexibility, balance and co-ordination.

After 30 minutes working on our legs using the downstairs apparatus, we moved upstairs for floor work using spring boards for upper body strength.

I’d never come across the traditional apparatus Breathe Pilates use – made from wood and springs. Most people would assume Pilates is a relatively new concept but it actually dates back more than 100 years. Joseph Pilates devised this method, exercise repertoire and way of thinking back in the early 1900s.

He was the first to focus on deep torso strength, flexibility and the importance of correct breathing and control over the whole body to facilitate the correction of imbalances and create a strong, aligned body. Breathe Pilates has used and adapted many of Joseph’s methods and thought processes.

Lee first discovered Pilates during her time studying in Australia. She said: “Everyone there was using Pilates as a health and fitness tool.

“The physiotherapy centre I was working in was applying it to nearly every client. Coming previously from a personal training and fitness background, I understood immediately the benefits Pilates could bring to the health and fitness world.

“On my return to the UK and throughout the final year of my

degree in Sport Rehabilitation, I undertook a Pilates qualification with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute in London, where I learnt to apply Pilates at a fitness level and more importantly as a rehabilitation tool.”

Your Sheffield News meets Amy Wells – founder of Sheffield based hot yoga studios, Amy’s Ashram…

When did you first discover an interest in yoga?

I started teaching yoga ten years ago when I completed my training in India. I lived out there in an ashram [a spiritual retreat] in the jungle during my gap year at university. It was such an inspiring experience.

You had to follow all rules of the ashram – we would sit crossed legs on the floor eating dinner with our hands. Each member of the community had a job too – mine was washing the pots.

When was Amy’s Ashram born?

When I returned to the UK from my travels, all I wanted to do was yoga. I’d teach whenever I had the spare time – I held classes all over the UK and Europe – from London to Dorset and Greece – but my aim was always to return to Sheffield and open my own studio here. My sister owns a beauty salon in the Peak District – Alive Health – so I set up a studio there.

Last year, my partner and I moved to a property on Abbeydale Road and my husband, being a builder, suggested he build me a yoga studio above the garage. This was originally planned to be a personal space but I was so overwhelmed by the studio, I wanted to teach here.

Amy’s Ashram was born.

What does Amy’s Ashram offer?

We run Hot Yoga, Kundalini Yoga and Hatha Yoga classes.

There are some awesome workshops and retreats always on the horizon too. For the past five years, I’ve been organising yoga retreats in the UK, Mexico and Ibiza. Clients come with us and many others who hear word via advertising. I studied International tourism and business management at university, so I know what I’m doing with marketing. The demand we get is impressive.

Does Amy’s Ashram cater for all ages and abilities?

Yes, anyone is welcome. We all work at our own pace and hot yoga is great for those recovering from injuries too – it has many benefits. The late night classes are popular with Mum’s and the day classes attract a mix of men and women. I hold 11 classes per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday plus I have two new yoga teachers who have just joined to offer classes for babies, children, teens and more for adults.

The room is simplistic – just two roof windows look out to nothing but trees and a mirrored wall faces you. I was waiting for the gentle background music to play as an indication that the class was about to start, but this is not how Amy works.

The room remains quiet – but Amy asks us to move to our feet and find our eyes in the mirror.

There’s ten of us in the studio – a mix of males and females from 20 years to 60 years. We’re evenly spread on yoga mats wearing loose, comfortable clothes and bare-foot.

As we hold our focus in the mirror, the movement begins. For the first 45 minutes we practice floor work – learning a series of

26 static postures extracted from Patanjali’s 84 postures. Even if you’ve practiced yoga before, you may be surprised at how much more of a challenge it becomes in 40 degrees heat. For the remaining 45 minutes, we practice floor work – still challenging but less so than floor work.

Hot yoga has many health benefits: to burn fat and increase metabolism; increase strength, balance and flexibility; give a clear, focused mind; release anxiety, depression and emotional stress and to give understanding of your own body. “If you practice yoga 3-4 times per week you will see the benefits in less than a month” Amy tells us.

As the class comes to a close, we’re left in silence to reflect and relax before we head out in our

own time. Shoes and bags are left securely outside of the studio and the fresh air feels incredible as we go out to collect them. Be sure to bring some warm clothes for the journey home though and drink plenty of fluid – a recommended litre of water half an hour after the class. This half an hour will allow your body to cool down so you won’t lose the water through sweat!

BeerX marks the spot Words by: Jessica Fogarty

The Society of Independent Brewers’ (SIBA) BeerX festival is rolling back into iceSheffield for its third year on 20th and 21st March - and it’s once again packed to the rafters with live music, street food, big screen rugby and, of course, beer.

And not just any beer. Festival-goers can sample from over 250 UK regional award-winning beers, which will have been judged at SIBA’s national beer awards earlier in the week. Beer will be dispensed from temperature-controlled mobile cellars and served from around 80 hand-pulls and keg fonts on BeerX’s purpose-built 30 metre bar. There’s even a bottle

bar too. Phew!

The beginning of BeerX’s week-long event will once again combine a trade exhibition, seminars, keynote speakers and the annual beer and business awards for SIBA members, which will be hosted by BBC Radio 2’s Nigel Barden.

The event will then open its doors to the public to present the Festival of Beer taking place on the Friday and Saturday.

The festival gives members of the public the unique opportunity to join Britain’s brewers at an event tied closely to the industry, and sample around 250 of their award-winning beers as well as enjoying a variety of entertainment and a diverse street food court.

by There’s a Beer for That, a nationwide campaign backed by newly formed Britain’s Beer Alliance. The campaign drives awareness and understanding of the wide range of styles and flavours of beers available in the UK today. Sport lovers will also be able to kick back and enjoy all the final 6 Nations Rugby matches on the event’s giant screen.

The festival is open to all (as long as you’re over 18!) on Friday 20th March from 2pm - 11pm, and on Saturday 21st March from 12pm - 11pm. The venue can be easily accessed via tram, with a designated stop at Don Valley.

Car crashes on Sheffield street just yards from where vehicle ploughed through front room A car has crashed on a Sheffield road just weeks after another vehicle ploughed into a house in the same location.

The green Renault Clio lost control on Argyle Road, Meersbrook after coming down the steep Bishopscourt Road opposite.

The accident happened just a few yards from where a red Ford Focus ploughed into the front room of a terrace house, when the city was gripped by snow and ice on Wednesday, January 21.

Mum Salmah Zahid, aged 23, was in the house with her husband Abdul Saboor, 25, and their two children, but luckily they were all uninjured.

SATURDAY 28TH MARCH 2015 Kell Brook will defend his IBF World Welterweight title against number one mandatory challenger ‘Jo Jo’ Dan at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on March 28.

The Sheffield star landed the title in August with a career-high win over Shawn Porter and makes a long-awaited return to action in his hometown, with his first defence of the title being his first fight in the Steel City since he stopped Vyacheslav Senchenko in October 2013.

Brook dives straight into the deep-end following his life-threatening injury when he was attacked whilst on holiday in September as he meets the Canadian-based Romanian Dan, who edged out Kevin Bizier in a final eliminator for ‘The Special One’s’ title in December.

“After everything that’s happened over the last six months, it feels incredible knowing I will be defending my World title in Sheffield,” said Brook. “I want to get this mandatory out of the way and then target those mega fights that are out there in the division. There is no chance that I will be underestimating Jo Jo Dan though as I know how he will be feeling having worked so hard to get into the mandatory position just like I did, but I will be working twice as hard to keep the belt that I earned.”

New owner Dejphon Chansiri wants to take the Owls back to the Premier League in time for the club’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

Chansiri officially received the club from out-going owner Milan Mandaric on Monday, March 2, at a packed media call at Hillsborough.

And he spoke of his desire to restore Wednesday to the top flight as soon as possible.

“I share a dream with everyone involved in Sheffield Wednesday that we can celebrate our 150th anniversary back in the Premier League,” Chansiri said.

“Seeing as the club will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2017, that will be the approximate goal to see them back in the Premier League.

“I have purchased Sheffield Wednesday independently through my own funds for £37.5million. I’m pleased to inform you the club is now debt free and released of all charges from Hillsborough Stadium.”

“I’m developing plans over the short, medium and long term to maximise the sporting potential of Sheffield Wednesday in a healthy and sustainable manner.

“Everywhere I go in Sheffield and England, I see the huge importance of the club not just for the city but within the whole football family.

“I intend to respect the rich history and heritage of the club the supporters are rightly proud of.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead and believe together we can achieve great success.

“For now I’ll be cheering on our lads for a strong finish to the season.”

Ratification of the deal by the Football League is considered to be a formality at this point.
