More than 10,000 nominations came in from all across England and the race to be crowned at this year’s English Curry awards ceremony was an extremely tight contest. The nominees were invited to a swanky affair at the AJ Bell Stadium, Manchester, where the award-winners were announced.

One of the most important days of her life became more memorable still, when 27 year old Matt Walker proposed to Sheffield student Sarah-Lou Rowbotham on graduation day.

Walker had spent weeks wondering when to pop the question to his girlfriend of four years.

Celebrity mixologist, Wayne Collins, Britain’s best bartender, is returning to Sheffield’s Inox Dine next month, back by popular demand, to host a theatrical and entertaining evening which is set to get the Christmas party season started.

A national survey commissioned by Fox’s Biscuits found that 84 per cent of Sheffield locals carry out acts of generosity more than once a week, making the city the most generous in the UK!

A burger designed by University of Sheffield student Luke Watson is to go on sale across 1,200 UK MacDonald’s restaurants after it won over the judging panel in a national competition.

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has announced its annual BeerX Festival of Beer is set to return to Sheffield for its third year in 2015.

The flagship beer industry event will take place at iceSheffield from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 March 2015.

2014 has been a great year for Ross ‘The Boss’ Burkinshaw. Under the tutelage of former European champion, Ryan Rhodes, and manager Dennis Hobson, Burkinshaw has claimed the Commonwealth Bantamweight belt in an instant classic.

The popular Wagamama restaurant in the busy Meadowhall shopping Centre is set for a move and a makeover just in time for Christmas. The current location will close on November 26 and a brand new restaurant will open upstairs in the lively dining quarter early December.

Work party? Celebrating the festivities with friends? Family function? Whatever the occasion, Marco’s Sheffield have the menu.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Sheffield following the city’s sparkling Christmas lights switch on.

Words by: Jessica Fogarty In the evening X-Factor winner Sam Bailey took to the Heart stage in the Peace Gardens to entertain crowds, wowing the crowds with her chart topper Skyscraper, as well as seasonal favourite O Holy Night to get people in the festive spirit.

Also entertaining the crowds were musicians, choirs and pantomime performers starring in this year’s production of “Dick Whittington” at the Lyceum Theatre, including EastEnders’ Samantha Womack.

Characters from films including “Frozen” were meeting children in the Peace Gardens and Town Hall Square, while children’s favourites from CBeebies lead a storytelling session in the Winter Garden.

Attractions at The Moor’s Christmas Party included: snow from a snow machine, giant snowmen and the switch-on of The Moor’s own Christmas tree at 3pm.

When it came to flicking the big switch, Sheffield’s Lord Mayor Peter Rippon, was joined on stage by Sam, as well as Father Christmas, performers starring in this year’s panto, Dick Whittington and last year’s Britain’s Got Talent champions Callabro.

This year’s Christmas market is also now open, housed in wooden cabins in the Peace Gardens and Fargate. As well as independent traders selling a variety of gifts, jewellery, crafts and fresh produce, there are also refreshment stalls selling hot food and drinks, and two bars stocked with festive favourites such as mulled wine.

The Christmas market runs from 10am to 6pm daily throughout November and, in December, it will be open until 8pm each Wednesday.

On Sunday, 23 November, activities in the Peace Gardens will finish at 6.30pm.

Stars light up Meadowhall at charity concert 15,000 enjoy Light Switch On entertainment from Professor Green, Union J and Alexa Goddard Words by: Jessica Fogarty Dismal weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of more than 15,000 fans who turned up in force for the highly anticipated annual Meadowhall and Capital Yorkshire Charity Light Switch On. The crowds were entertained by performances from UK chart-topper Professor Green, one of the UK’s biggest boy bands Union J, and up-and-coming pop sensation Alexa Goddard Proceeds from the event will be shared between Meadowhall’s Charity of the Year, St Luke’s Hospice, and Capital FM’s new charity, Global’s Make Some Noise.

While music lovers partied on outside with the stars, thousands of shoppers inside the Centre were able to marvel at the illuminations across the malls, which were turned on at 8.00pm – an hour earlier than planned due to adverse weather conditions – to mark the start of the festive period.

Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall said: “We have enjoyed yet another amazing night with the star studded line up performing to a fantastic crowd.

“We are delighted to have raised funds for two very worthwhile charities, St Luke’s Hospice and Global’s Make Some Noise, which have both benefited through ticket sales from the event.”

Capital Yorkshire’s Breakfast show presenter JoJo Kelly commented: “The Meadowhall crowd never disappoints when it comes to giving us a brilliant response.

“The setting, the acts and the fireworks made for another Light Switch On concert to remember!”

Sheffield young apprentice scoops top award Words by: Jessica Fogarty A young apprentice from Sheffield has been recognised for his exceptional progress at Meadowhall Shopping Centre by national organisation Youth Build UK. Construction apprentice Mitchell Bills, 17, was presented with the Youth Builder of the Year award following his outstanding work and effort in undertaking vocational training and employment in the sector.

Over 140 people, including politicians, senior figures from the construction industry, colleges, training organisations, finalists and their families all gathered together on the House of Commons Terrace to celebrate the achievements of the 2014 finalists.

Meadowhall Centre Director, Darren Pearce said: “We are absolutely delighted that Mitchell has received this award. He has done a fantastic job and is rightly rewarded for all of his hard work.

“As a business we are passionate about giving young people opportunities and therefore offer an array of apprenticeships across the board from construction though to security and marketing.

“Giving young people the chance to get involved in the work place and take the skills they learned in school and translate them to a working environment is something we are passionate about and aim to support as much as we can.”

Mitchell, who attended Hinde House School in Firth Park said: “It was an amazing experience going down to London and receiving this award. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice at Meadowhall and would encourage others to do the same.

“It gives you the opportunity to experience work on a day to day basis and get trained in an area of expertise at the same time - and working at Meadowhall, one of the biggest businesses in South Yorkshire, has been incredible.”

Meadowhall employs over 6,000 people a year with an additional 2,000 during the Christmas period.

The Centre recently held a Jobs Fair which saw crowds of people through the doors taking advantage of the opportunities on offer within the centre.

From the 2,000 people surveyed, results also revealed Edinburgh was next in line to Sheffield with 78 per cent of locals doing something generous more than once a week. Sheffield Uni student creates McDonald’s burger Words by: Jessica Fogarty A burger designed by University of Sheffield student Luke Watson is to go on sale across 1,200 UK MacDonald’s restaurants after it won over the judging panel in a national competition.

Luke’s Big Spicy Bacon Burger was one of five winning creations from McDonald’s My Burger competition, which challenged food-lovers to create a customised burger using a beef patty combined with a choice of more than 80 ingredients.

The 11 most popular burgers were tasted by an expert judging panel, which included England rugby legend and Celebrity MasterChef winner Phil Vickery, and Mark Hawthorne, managing director of McDonald’s UK.

Gleadless War Veteran, Neil Harris, who also volunteers in Meadowhall’s Help for Heroes store, said: “Meadowhall has been really supportive towards war veterans alongside the Help for Heroes store in-centre.

“Armistice Day now not only remembers those who fought in WWI and WWII but also those who have given their lives in more recent conflicts – the silence Meadowhall hosted was a huge sign of respect to all.”

Meadowhall’s Centre Director Darren Pearce added: “It was extremely important to us that we marked Armistice Day at Meadowhall and offered visitors and staff the opportunity to pause for thought to remember anyone who gave their lives in battle.

“We were humbled to stand alongside a number of true war heroes as we observed the two minutes silence and thank all who joined us in remembrance.”

Meadowhall turned its lights red on the Park Lane mall in the evening as a further mark of respect.

Sheffield couple get engaged in shock graduation proposal Words by: Jessica Fogarty One of the most important days of her life became more memorable still, when 27 year old Matt Walker proposed to Sheffield student Sarah-Lou Rowbotham on graduation day.

Walker had spent weeks wondering when to pop the question to his girlfriend of four years.

The 27-year-old had planned to ask Sarah-Lou to be his wife at Christmas, then on their holiday to Florida next year.

which led to Matt proposing the very next day - at Sarah-Lou’s graduation ceremony from Sheffield Hallam University.

The IT worker stunned his bride-to-be by asking for her hand in marriage with a specially-made ring on the steps of Sheffield City Hall, as their friends, families and other students cheered.

Matt, who lives with Sarah-Lou in Dronfield Woodhouse, said: “To be honest it wasn’t planned at all.

But it was a midnight eureka moment

“The night before the graduation I woke up in bed and thought, ‘Hang on’. Our families were going to be there, we’ll be dressed up, and it is a special day – I could do it then.

“I had to text my dad at midnight as the ring was in his safe so Sarah wouldn’t see it. On the day my legs were shaking, Chancellor Lord Robert Winston was doing his speech and he is a very intelligent man worth listening to, but I was willing him to get on with it so I could go outside and ask her!”

BeerX festival to return to Sheffield The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has announced its annual BeerX Festival of Beer is set to return to Sheffield for its third year in 2015.

BeerX will once again combine a trade exhibition, seminars, keynote speakers and the annual beer and business awards for SIBA members, which will be hosted by BBC Radio 2’s Nigel Barden.

Simon says, “let there be light” Simon Webb delights fans at Crystal Peaks lights.

Words by: Jessica Fogarty THERE was an extra sparkle in the air at Crystal Peaks as Strictly Come Dancing favourite Simon Webb switched on the award-winning shopping mall’s annual Christmas lights display.

The Blue singer delighted hundreds of fans as he launched the shopping centre’s new Festive lights display and promised that there would be a new Blue album launched in 2015.

Simon provided the highlight on an afternoon and evening dedicated to launching the Crystal Peaks Christmas season in style.

The event was hosted by Hallam FM’s Big John and featured carols Emmanuel and Westfield Schools.

Further musical entertainment came from Another Way Out, Absolute Beginners, Jamie Self, Alex Parker and The Zenon Band, with Irish dancing from the McRoibin Dancers.

There was also a competition to win £1000 worth of Crystal Peaks gift vouchers, an M&S hamper and all the things needed for a great Christmas.

Centre manager Lee Greenwood commented: “We always enjoy the start of the Christmas season and this year we had one of our most successful lights switch on to date.

“The crowd loved Simon and all our other entertainers and really got into the Christmas spirit.

Crime at Christmas What would a burglar want for christmas?

Words by: Jessica Fogarty South Yorkshire Police have launched a burglary campaign on the run up to Christmas with an “open invitation to burglars”, to raise awareness and encourage the public to protect their property and belongings from opportunistic thieves.

One in four burglaries occur in South Yorkshire due to doors and windows being left unlocked.

The campaign is to promote crime prevention advice to residents to protect themselves from becoming a victim of crime, as Force lead for burglary Superintendent Scott Green, explains: “Burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime that can leave the victim devastated and afraid to be in their own home.

“By keeping doors and windows locked, even when you are in the home, and removing valuables from view, you are protecting yourself and your property from opportunistic thieves who will not think twice about entering your home if they discover a door unlocked or see car keys on the windowsill.”

Further crime prevention advice includes using timers on lights to give the impression someone is home

when it is unattended and if you have a burglar alarm, always set it when you leave the house.

Consider using a UV or permanent marker to mark your property with your postcode, house number or name and register them on www. immobilise.com to increase the chances of getting them back if they are lost or stolen.

Supt Green continued: “On the run up to Christmas thieves will relish the opportunity to sneak in and steal gifts that are sat under the Christmas tree, and even after Christmas, ensure you dispose of empty boxes and rubbish discreetly, as this a clear sign to burglars that you have new and valuable items in your home.

“Keep your property secure and don’t give criminals the chance to ruin what should be an enjoyable time to spend with family and friends; do not give them an open invitation to your home.”

Bequeath your pre-loved clothes Words by: Jessica Fogarty A new pre-loved boutique will open its doors in Sheffield this December!

Founded by Molly Masey, the Bequeath boutique is a new concept store – selling customer’s pre-loved designer or High Street leading label brands of clothes.

“It’s simple” says Molly. “Just bring in your unwanted new or lovingly worn clothes, I’ll sell them for you then we share the sale price 50/50.”

Bequeath launched online in May this year, but due to increased demand the brand is ready to grow and open up its own premises. “The boutique is already filled with stock” added Molly.

“We’ll still be offering online sales and our Click and Collect service but customers who want to view the stock in person now have this option, and we’ll collect clothes for free within the Sheffield area.”

As well as pre-loved clothes, bags and shoes, the boutique also stocks brand new individual statement necklaces.

Rebrand for Sheffield supermarket Words by: Jessica Fogarty Supermarket bosses have rebranded a Sheffield store – following complaints from customers about its name.

The Asda store opened on Beighton Road East, Drakehouse in March, calling it Asda Sheffield Mosborough after a neighbouring Sheffield Council ward.

Asda Sheffield Beighton Road; or keeping the name Asda Sheffield Mosborough.

Steve Ryan, who has just taken over as the new store manager at Asda said: “We listened to our customers and following a vote on our Facebook poll,

However, the name sparked complaints from shoppers, who pointed out the store is more than a mile from Mosborough village.

Local school Tapton has been named the Comprehensive School of the year in national rankings.

Based in Crosspool, Tapton has been selected after rising in the national rankings by over 60 places this year, boasting outstanding A Level and GCSE results. The school now stands in eighth place in the newspapers national rankings of non-selective schools.

Alastair McCall, the guide editor states that: “Tapton School makes a huge difference to the lives of its children and their families.

Other local schools that have also featured within this guide include, Sheffield High School which was ranked ninth best independent school in the north and Birkdale School was ranked fourth best prep school in the North.

Nick Clegg , Shaffaq Mohammed and the Lib Dems have launched a petition calling on Sheffield Labour bosses to get tough on unpaid tax.

This follows news that the amount of council tax which is owed to Sheffield City Council now stands at a staggering £39 million.

Nick Clegg MP said “ We cannot afford for Sheffield’s Labour Councillors to allow this huge amount of tax to be left unpaid. Apart from being infuriating for the vast majority of local taxpayers who play by the rules and pay their bills, this money could be used to fund the front services Labour have placed under threat.”

Sheffield is among the worst authorities in the country for collecting council tax, losing out on £millions which could be spent providing important local services.

Lib Dem campaigner Shaffaq Mohammed said; “ Before axing important services for local people in Sheffield, Labour should first make a serious attempt to claw back some of the £39m owed in unpaid tax.”

According to a new survey, one in four people living in the West Country city said they would never tip under any circumstances, placing Gloucester at the bottom of a UK league table.

Second worst in the stingy stakes were people living in the Yorkshire city of Sheffield, where 21 per cent of those polled said they never leave tips.

Newcastle was revealed as the third meanest city, with 19 per cent of customers in the Geordie city admitting to never putting their hand in their pocket.

Instead, waiting staff should head to Edinburgh, Glasgow, York, Swansea or Wrexham if they want to get rich on tips.

In these five locations, not a single person polled said they never leave a tip.

Rajesh Agrawal, CEO of the online money transfer service Xendpay,

which conducted the poll, said: “On the whole the poll shows Brits are ready to put their hand in their pockets, but if you are working for tips in certain areas, the odds are slightly more stacked against you.”

Of those polled, 14 per cent said they didn’t tip because it was “confusing or inconvenient”, with 74 per cent saying they valued service above the quality of what they were being served.

Meanwhile, 18 per cent of Londoners said they would always leave a tip, even if the service was bad - making the capital a good place for waiting staff to work.

Mr Agrawal added: “Some people may expect London to be the toughest market for tips – but this shows otherwise.

“Tipping varies between cultures and is an important transaction for people on both sides.

“The UK does appear to be getting more comfortable with the notion of tipping, but it is still surprising some people deciding how much to give is a hassle or is confusing.”

Toy shop creates jobs on Moor

Cutting the grit Local pressure forces council U -turn on winter gritting cuts

Words by: Jessica Fogarty More than a dozen jobs have been created following the opening of a new branch of toy retailer, The Entertainer.

The shop opened its doors to the public last month, located in a retail unit in the New Markets Building. A total of 13 jobs, including temporary Christmas staff, have been created.

Following a petition which included 1500 signatures from local residents, the council have revised their proposals which will see 141 streets in reprieve including , Highcliffe road, Edale road, Huntley road, and Woodholm road.

However, the council still propose to stop gritting dozens of other local roads, to remove many grit bins and cease volunteer snow warden schemes.

Gary Grant, managing director and founder of The Entertainer, said: “After experiencing such solid growth across the UK we are pleased to announce the opening of the Sheffield store.”

If bulbs blow, replace them.

Don’t leave fairy lights on when you go out or when you go to sleep.

Selecting a Tree for Christmas

Many of the photos in the calendar are taken by local residents, plus there are some archive shots showing familiar locations looking very different in times gone by.

Totley Primary ranked in top 100 Primary Schools!

The list, based on last year’s SATs results, gathers information from every primary school in the country of which there are around 25,000! Totley Primary School was listed 92.

Family shine bright for cancer hospital after devastating diagnosis

In March 2013 after visiting A&E with severe back pain, Ben was referred to a doctor who gave him the surprising diagnosis of a rare germ cell cancer.

Father of two, Ben began chemotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital in May, followed by surgery and radiotherapy treatment later in the year.

During this difficult time, Ben and Jen decided to bring forward their wedding day to ensure that Ben could enjoy the special occasion surrounded by his friends and family ahead of treatment.

“I never imagined that a trip to A&E for back pain would end up changing my life forever”, Said Ben. “I suppose at the time I was utterly shocked at the size of my tumour and my main focus was getting better so that I could return to some normality and spend time with Jen and the kids.”

In February, after returning to work, Ben attended a routine check-up and was given the devastating diagnosis of secondary lung cancer. Despite undergoing further chemotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital, he was told that all conventional treatment options for his illness have been exhausted, leaving his future very uncertain.

Despite their unimaginable situation Ben and Jen have generously agreed to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Christmas Star Appeal.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support worldclass cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

This festive season Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is asking the local community to remember the vital

work of the hospital and donate to The Christmas Star Appeal which is generously being supported by Napoleon’s Casino. Support for the appeal will help fund pioneering cancer research and improve cancer treatment and care for patients like Ben, both now and in the future.

Ben continued: “Christmas is as much as anything about hope. My own treatment options may now be limited but I refuse to give up on myself and I refuse to give up on the thousands of other people in this area who will one day find themselves battling this same disease.

A donation to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this year will give more local families the chance to make many more happy Christmas memories together. The cancer charity will be sending out a silver star Christmas tree decoration to anyone who donates to the appeal. The hope is that come Christmas Day hundreds of these special stars will be hanging on trees right across the region.

Ben’s wife, Jen says: “Sadly we don’t know what 2015 will bring us. We have to take each day as it comes and make the precious time that we spend together this Christmas really count.

“We want to encourage as many people as possible to join us in donating to The Christmas Star Appeal this year and give patients like Ben the chance of spending many more Christmases with their family and friends.”

Charity Fundraising Manager, Helen Gentle said: “We are incredibly touched that the Degg family have chosen to support our Christmas Appeal this year despite their distressing circumstances.

“Last year, we had such an incredible response to our Christmas appeal from the local community who helped us raise over £20,000 so that our support of Weston Park Hospital can continue. With the added support of Napoleons Casino we’re hoping to raise even more this year to prevent local families in the future going through the difficult ordeal that the Degg family now face.”

On the surface, they are a joyful young family from Sheffield looking forward to the festive season together, but beneath their smiles lies a heartbreaking story.

Plunge for charity Sheffield grandmother takes the plunge for charity Words by: Jessica Fogarty A grandmother from Sheffield has jumped from an aeroplane 15,000ft above Lincolnshire to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Julie Taylor took the plunge in memory of her father – raising £1,790. Macmillan looked after her father Bret Taylor from when he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2011, until he passed away in 2013, aged 88. 53-year-old Julie from Woodseats, said: “During all this time, his Macmillan nurse was there to offer support to him and my mum.

“The care he received and the

support we as a family got at such a difficult time was amazing.

“Dad would be proud of me. He knew I always wanted to do a skydive and I did it while wearing a locket with his ashes in.”

Julie set herself a target of £1,000 for the skydive, which she thought was ‘a little ambitious’ – but ended up raising much more thanks to the generosity of colleagues at the National Blood Service in Sheffield.

Julie said: “Many of our donors give blood because loved ones have suffered from cancer.

“When they saw my posters about my challenge, they gave generously as it was a cause close to their hearts.”

Aligarh A luxury new dining experience for Sheffield furnishings.

Words by: Jessica Fogarty Aligarh has just opened its doors in Crosspool, offering a mouth-watering menu of traditional and modern delights straight from the sub-continent.

Formally the location of Artisan Restaurant – which had rave reviews in the town before its closure – we knew Aligarh was under pressure to impress.

The décor has been re-vamped but the intimate, romantic ambience remains with low level lighting and luxurious

We visited on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was surprisingly full – our expectations grew seeing such demand from customers just a few weeks after opening to the public.

After receiving a warm welcome from our waiter, we ordered our drinks and tucked in to the poppadum’s and pickle tray while we browsed the menu.

The Tikka King Prawns caught our eye on the starters menu, as well as the Onion Bhaji – I’m confident you

can always judge the talents of an Indian chef solely on the taste and texture of their bhajis – an Indian favourite for most.

The starters arrived promptly – the three large Tikka King Prawns were marinated with yogurt, vinegar, special herbs, then grilled over charcoal and served with a Hyderabadi side sauce. Delicious! The Onion Bahji’s didn’t disappoint either – two circular onion rings dipped into spicy batter and deep fried until golden then

served with a fresh fruity side salad.

For main course we opted for the Shahi Murgh Tandoori and Meat Hyderabadi. The Tandoori consisted of chicken marinated in a spice yogurt and cooked on charcoal. It’s then cooked with tomatoes, onions, green chilli, garlic, coriander, ginger and peppers and arrives at the table served on a sizzling plate, on a bed of onions with a side Hyderabi sauce.

You’ll find the Meat Hyderabi dish on the chef special’s menu – we opted for chicken cooked with tangy spices, green coriander, fresh cream, yogurt, tomatoes, garlic and ginger in bay leaf juices, cardamom and cloves.

This dish is full of distinctive flavours.

informs us Aligarh uses only the highest quality and freshest ingredients which are blended seamlessly to create a cocktail of different flavours.

We were offered dessert – but unfortunately had no room to fit in a tempting treat or coffee. Next time!

We’re sure to be back again soon – the food is rich in taste and full of flavour coupled with great service in an elegant setting at an affordable price.

Christmas cheer for cocktail royalty at Inox Dine Words by: Jessica Fogarty Celebrity mixologist, Wayne Collins, Britain’s best bartender, is returning to Sheffield’s Inox Dine next month, back by popular demand, to host a theatrical and entertaining evening which is set to get the Christmas party season started.

He’ll be shakin’ and stirring specially created cocktails on Wednesday, December 3rd, and sharing tips on how to add festive fizz to every party.

Known as ‘Cocktail Royalty’, the internationally renowned bartender will host the event at Inox Dine, the restaurant on level 5 of the Students’ Union Building at The University of Sheffield. Regarded within the drinks industry as one of the most knowledgeable and innovative bartenders today, he has consulted on cocktail styling for high profile events such as the BAFTAS, film premiers and fashion shows.

Starters, which will be served at the table, feature ham hock and Stilton terrine with pickled

cabbage, watercress, and chive brioche, and Blacksticks Blue cheese parfait with poached pears, toasted hazelnut and tarragon brioche. For the main course, served buffet style, is traditional roast turkey or mushroom wellington, roast potatoes, winter salads, braised red cabbage and cranberry sauce. For dessert a tempting tasting trio of Christmas pudding, caramel parfait and roast spiced pears.

The nominees were invited to a swanky affair at the AJ Bell Stadium, Manchester, where the award-winners were announced.

Akbar’s, who have a chain of 13 restaurants across the north of England including Sheffield and Leeds, were awarded the top titles of Restaurant of The Year and Best of Manchester. Owner Shabir Hussain said: “We are thrilled to announce this is the second year running Akbar’s has

withheld the title of Restaurant of The Year. We were also overwhelmed to receive the Best of Manchester award – just to be nominated was enough recognition for us, but to take the title was an honour.”

Noim Ullah, head chef at Cutler’s Spice of Sheffield also took the title of Chef of the Year for the North of England. He said: “This is the third year running our family-run restaurant has retained the Chef of the Year title. I won in 2012, then my wife, Asharfun Nessa Begun won the award last year.”

The glam event was hosted by Sunny and Shay Grewal, the couple from

the Bafta nominated Channel 4’s ‘The Family’, who currently present a show on BBC Radio London 94.9fm.

As well as recognising the curry industry in all its facets, the event also raised just over £1500 for the official charity partners The Well Foundation.

Yasmin Mahmood, Operations Director of event organisers Oceanic Consulting commented: “It was a fantastic evening and I would like to thank everyone for attending and a big thank you to our sponsors. Congratulations to all our winner and finalists, and I hope to see you next year!”

We visited at lunch and indulged in the three-course set menu (£20pp) with the choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts. For ‘primi’, as said by our Italian waiter, Antonio, you can choose from a Tuscan Ribbolita Soup, Classic Bruschetta or Melon and Prosaciutto Ham. I opted for the bruschetta while my dining partner decided on the melon dish.

Both arrived artistically arranged on the plate – just the right portion sizes to tempt your taste buds ahead of your main course.

Suitable for vegetarians, the Classic Brushetta came topped with fresh tomato, basil and garlic. The melon was served in slices, covered with thin tasty rashes of ham.

For main course, choose from Roasted Scottish Salmon with a Pesto Crumb Crust, Traditional Turkey Escalope or Butternut Squash and Gorgonzola Risotto. The traditional turkey dinner was served with a sage and chestnut stuffing and balsamic and onion gravy

For dessert – once you’ve loosened your belt – choose between Christmas Pudding, New York Cheesecake with Mulled Wine Fruits or Chocolate Truffle Mousse. The traditional half circle of Christmas Pudding comes with an individual jug of amaretto cream while the chocolate truffle mousse is a wedge of chocolate heaven – a similar consistency to a gooey brownie.

Priced at £20pp, considering the portion sizes, the luxury venue and quality of food served, we were more than impressed with the value. Fancy visiting in the evening? The same menu is priced at £28pp.

Words by: Jessica Fogarty The popular Wagamama restaurant in the busy Meadowhall shopping Centre is set for a move and a makeover just in time for Christmas. The current location will close on November 26 and a brand new restaurant will open upstairs in the lively dining quarter early December.

The new restaurant will boast updated interiors with a fantastic open kitchen and relaxing seating booths as well as the iconic communal dining benches that Wagamama is known for. The newly located restaurant will be serving all of the classic Wagamama favourites including the famous chicken katsu curry! There will be room for 146 people to dine in the restaurant

to enjoy Wagamama’s flavour-packed dishes such as chicken and prawn pad Thai and ramen dishes – bowls of delicious soup filled with meat or vegetables and heaps of noodles.

YO! Sushi steps up their game with a new menu!

Words by: Jessica Fogarty We perch on a bar stool and begin to drool over the dishes that trundle around the conveyor belt.

You may be under the impression that YO! Sushi only serves up raw fish, given the restaurant name, but the Japanese inspired menu actually offers more than 80 dishes including hot classics, sashimi, tempura, salads, hand rolls and desserts. So whether you love meat, fish or vegetables, don’t panic, you’re catered for.

The dishes sit under clear plastic domes on coloured plates. The six coloured plates represent the prices of the dishes – ranging from £1.90 to £5.

We love the simple concept, just sit, take, eat and pay – the empties are counted at the end of the meal for the bill.

We take a Miso Soup and some Edamame beans as appetisers while we browse the menu. The soup is a soy bean broth with seaweed, tofu and spring onion. We’re happy to hear refills are unlimited for no extra cost.

The soy beans are seasoned in Cornish sea salt – just squeeze, suck then discard the pod. It’s a flavoursome start. the food Peek over the conveyor belt and you’ll see the team of chefs preparing the dishes – mostly sushi and side dishes circulate the restaurant on the conveyor belt so if there’s something specific that catches your eye on the menu then press a button and a waiter will come take your order.

There’s also a button for unlimited still

water and another for sparkling water.

We’re impressed with the mod-cons.

New dishes to the menu include: Oishii Buns – soft white rolls filled with your choice of filling – Hoisin Duck, Spicy Beef, Kimchee Salmon or Mushroom; plus a new selection of sashimi dishes – slices of premium raw fish and Takoyaki – battered octopus balls.

I press my buzzer and opt for one of each. In around five minutes my Tuna Tataki and Ponzu Sashimi arrives – five slices of peppered seared Yellowfin tuna with chilli daikon and crispy shallots. Heavenly. A few minutes later my octopus balls and duck roll arrive together – I don’t know where to start. The battered octopus balls are seasoned with mayonnaise, red ginger, bonito flakes, aonori (Seaweed powder) and fruity katsu sauce. I decide these are an acquired taste yet I still manage to polish them off. I saved the best while last. Filled with shredder roast duck and topped with hoisin sauce, spring onions coriander and white sesame seeds – the Oishii Bun is my overall favourite. Room for dessert? We recommend you try the Banana and Chocolate Harumaki – a banana filled spring roll with a side strawberry and chocolate sauce.

It isn’t really a business, more of an initiative to improve the lives of children and their families. Babies love to be, and need to be carried and held close; it is one of the most important ways of providing a child with a strong sense of being loved and protected. Children are primed from the moment of their birth to seek sustenance and closeness, and our instincts as parents or caregivers is to comfort a crying child by lifting them up and cradling them close to our bodies, murmuring and rocking and soothing them with movement. This instinct is common to many species and many of the benefits of this close contact has been borne out by scientific research – infants automatically relax deeply when they are carried, with a demonstrable reduction in crying behaviour, a decrease in heart rate, and a calming of distressed movements. Put simply, babies need to be carried, and babies thrive when they are carried. The whole family benefits, both physiologically and psychologically. However, the society we find ourselves in here in the UK is often very fast paced and stressful; it can be hard for a parent to be able to give a young child all the attention and nurture he needs, while also meeting the demands of daily life. A soft sling can therefore be a very useful tool for parents to meet their child’s need for closeness, while giving them their hands back, and this is what I do at the Sheffield Sling Surgery; teaching and supporting parents to use carriers safely and confidently. I help them negotiate their way through the often confusing and myriad choices out there, and if there are confounding issues such as back pain, unusual body shapes, or specific medical needs I can help them find the right sling for their circumstances. This information can be accessed through the sling library sessions I run - which is just like a book library, but with slings. I have over 170 carriers which can be looked through, tried on, and hired for a small fee to be used at home and enjoyed. One size or type of sling does not fit all, especially as baby grows, and this service allows people to try a wide range of things before they buy.

I run a special bump to baby small group session called “The Fourth Trimester” in conjunction with the local BabyCalm teacher Lindsay Snow, where families can find out about how to use a sling safely with their newborn, meet other families with similar parenting perspectives, and learn about normal baby development. I also offer small group teaching in workshop format, and private consultations at my home.

Where did the inspiration/ idea come from?

I carried both my own children in simple pieces of long stretchy cloth when they were small. It meant that I was able to keep them close so I could talk to them easily (I am deaf and need to lipread) it helped them to sleep calmly, gave me my hands back and allowed me to get out of the house easily and freely without a heavy pram, get on the bus, get out into the Peaks and get on with my life. It was fantastic.. and as I did more research into the benefits of this close contact, I became convinced that many other parents would benefit enormously from it too.

When did Sling Surgery launch?

In July 2012, four friends and I launched a Facebook group with the specific aim of raising the profile of sling use in Sheffield; encouraging parents to tell their friends about the benefits they had discovered, and very soon we had a large community meeting in small groups around the city. As this grew, demand for professional services increased, so I did my first certified consultancy training in April 2013 to become a professional.

The Sling Surgery doors have been open for just over 18months and I’ve now completed three consultancy courses, to ensure my knowledge is right up to date and the best it can be.

I’m constantly amazed by how much the Surgery has grown; parents telling other parents about the services and the benefits they’ve found, sharing their own knowledge and helping others themselves. I have a team of committed volunteers who help me enormously.

Where are you based?

Most of my sessions are run from my home in S11, but I also have a large drop in library session in the City Centre on alternate Thursday afternoons for those who find public transport easier. I take the library up to Stocksbridge once a month.

How can people get involved?

Many people become so convinced of the benefit of using a carrier, be it a buckled carrier or a tie-on carrier, that they then pass their newfound knowledge on to their own friends and family. Many wish to learn more and become volunteers at the local library sessions, and others decide to do some basic safety training so they can teach parents in the role of a “peer supporter”. I run these peer supporter training courses with the aim of increasing the numbers of people in Sheffield and around who can offer excellent advice to parents that is safe and reliable.

What has been the response so far?

It’s been amazing. The Surgery helps in excess of a hundred families a month and we have plans for further outreach around the city.

What’s next for the business?

I am a passionate advocate of education as this empowers parents to make their own informed choices about

how they want to bring their children up. I’m hoping to give many more parents of Sheffield the opportunity to find out a bit more in an affordable and friendly way. I do a lot of writing about safety in slings, as well as general articles to introduce people to the whole concept. There is a real lack of good information around on the high street and too many slings for sale in shops which don’t support babies well and rapidly become uncomfortable for parents. I’d like to see sling use becoming much more mainstream, among all walks of life, after all, the practice of carrying children transcends culture, or social class. It is for everyone, no matter where they are, no matter what the budget.

“Some treatments can be done in one session but it all depends on the problem, how long the client has been suffering and how severe the symptoms are.”

Most sessions are between an hour and half and two hours. During the first session the problem is discussed in privacy and is held in the strictest confidence, then using N.L.P and over twenty years’ experience of hypnosis, changes within the unconscious mind can begin.

Have you launched a product like this before?

We meet the man behind the iHelp brand – a new multi-functional security device – discovered by Sheffield entrepreneur Adam Firth …

When did iHelp launch?

The idea came about four months ago.

I was working on some web material for a client and he showed me the product. No one else had it in the UK so I decided to go for it.

What is the concept?

Initially the iHelp device was marketed as a fall detector – which it is, but it does much, much more.

Many elderly people struggle to use a mobile phone – so how would they contact loved ones for help in an emergency? The iHelp device, which is small enough to fit in to a coat pocket, can immediately inform an emergency contact by text message to let them know if their loved one has fallen and help can be provided

What are you wishing for this christmas?

No, but I have a varied background in business. I studied Sport Development and Coaching at University but that was more of a hobby than a career for me. I spent time in Tanzania and Zambia volunteering in my early 20’s and then I came back to the UK and launched a bridal and menswear business – Kudos and La Bella Brides.

I’ve worked on a number of entrepreneurial projects since but this is a new and exciting challenge for me. I like to learn as much as possible and try my hand at different projects.

What’s next for you and the iHelp brand?

I’m planning to develop the device – I have two projects in the planning.

The first will be the same device but working from GPRS to connect to call centres and monitoring stations. The second is a wrist band which detects blood pressure, pulse, and heart-rate – connected to the iHelp device this will send a notification to the iHelp emergency contact. What many may not realise is that a similar opportunity for transportation is available to modern city-dwellers in the form of Sheffield’s Antique Quarters. Combining the eclectic and the familiar, the quarter offers something for all tastes - from stunning traditional antiques, chic 1960s minimalism to good old-fashioned grub.

Boasting six antique centres and twenty independent shops, the area, which includes Abbeydale and Bradfield road, as well as parts of London and Queen’s Road, is a vista of delights.

Antique centres include Heeley Bank’s Antique Centre on Queen’s Road, an atmospheric grade II listed building, that sells a combination of vintage, collectables and artwork. cinema, the building is now host to events such as the Antique Quarters Vintage Market and the new Pedlar’s Corner Carboot Sales. There are plans to continue renovations, with the aim of turning the Picture House into a hub for artistic and community events in Sheffield.

Sheffield Antiques Centre, a 19th century building on Bradfield Road is also buzzing with charm. The courtyard which leads into the building is full of architectural antiques to turn your garden into your own unique sanctuary. Once you step inside the main building, you will be spoilt for choice by over 40 stalls, selling items as varied as toys, books, furniture and vintage clothing.

Given the pure variety of locations and events on show, it is perhaps no surprise that the Antiques Quarter is growing in popularity and there are more events to come. The Vintage Christmas Market is set to take place on Sunday the 7th of December.

Musician Paul Heaton has resigned as a patron of Sheffield United as the rape row continues. He is the third high profile supporter to resign after Ched Evans resumed training with the blades.

United say they allowed Evans who was freed last month after serving half his sentence, to train with the club following a request from the Professional Footballers’ Association.

TV presenter Charlie Webster and sixties pop star Dave Berry have also resigned as patrons of the club following the controversy surrounding Evans. The current sponsors of the club have said they will pull their shirt sponsorship should the former player be re-signed by the club.

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis has expressed her views on the situation. Warning Sheffield United that she wants her named removed from a stand at Bramall Lane if Evans plays.

United manager Nigel Clough has said that the club are ‘nowhere near’ deciding if Evans will re-join the club once again. Over 157,000 people have signed a petition saying they don’t want the club to take him back.

The PFA maintain the stance that professional footballers should be treated as equals before the law and that they should be allowed to return to their place of work after periods of incarceration.

Stuart Gilhooly a lawyer for the PFA has been defending Evans right to play football once again. Gilhooly made reference to the point that people in other positions of work would be allowed back into society and work once again.

Pam Hunter of Rape Victims’ support group Nexus NI, said that appropriate employment for released offenders could help their progression back into society.

‘The issues in the case of Ched Evans is that his employment role could be seen as not appropriate due to the celebrity status that such players can achieve.’ Said Hunter.

Under the tutelage of former European champion, Ryan Rhodes, and manager Dennis Hobson, Burkinshaw has claimed the Commonwealth Bantamweight belt in an instant classic at the Doncaster Dome. With his career on the up once more, Chic reports on the changing fortunes of Sheffield’s newest boxing champion.

After suffering a ligament tear in January of 2011, Burkinshaw’s career was put on hold. It was a stroke of luck in September that gave The Boss the chance he so desperately wanted to return to the heights he seemed certain to reach before the injury slowed him down. The phrase ‘one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain’ applies here, as title holder Martin Ward was forced to withdraw from his scheduled

clash with Jason Cunningham due to a chest infection. Chances like this don’t come around too often in sports, and so in stepped Burkinshaw, seizing on a golden opportunity to claim the now vacated belt.

It was by no means easy – Burkinshaw was given only three days notice to prepare himself mentally for what might well have been the biggest fight in his twenty years of boxing. Speaking before the fight, Burkinshaw said “This opportunity has come at the best time for me. I’ve never felt better.

I’m in the best shape of my life and I train like every fight is a world title.”

The Boss’ professional approach to training was key to his success in the ring; the bout went the full twelve rounds and it was left for the judges to decide who would be the thirty-sixth Commonwealth Bantamweight champion. The slug-fest left both athletes

battered and bruised, but of the two it was Burkinshaw and his camp who celebrated the final bell with the most conviction. It was a close-run thing in the end with Phil Edwards ruling 116-112 and Michael Alexander 116-113 in Burkinshaw’s favour, while John King scored it 115-113 for Cunningham.

Now that The Boss is on top, the challengers will be coming thick and fast. Martin Ward is the first contender – his chivalry in vacating the title earning him an automatic shot at the new champ. Burkinshaw won’t have any qualms with that, for now his focus will be on making up for lost time and trying to get better every day.

From zero to hero Your Sheffield News puts the spotlight on Sheffield speedway champion, Simon Stead…

Words by: Jessica Fogarty Only 18 months ago the steel city’s home-grown speedway legend and Sheffield Tigers captain didn’t know if he’d walk again let alone hear the roar of his speedway bike.

In June 2013, Simon Stead’s worst fears were confirmed by a doctor based in the sleepy Norfolk sea side town.

Just hours before he’d been practicing at his Elite league home track where he belonged to race team Kings Lynn stars. As Simon sped around the track in preparation for the Swindon V Kings Lynn fixture which was only days away (his first meeting against his old team Swindon) he had what looked at first to be a ‘small’ crash – in comparison to some of Simon’s greater crashes – but it turned out to have horrific consequences.

Simon was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was later told he had smashed his tibia and fibula so bad they were unsure if he would ever walk again.

After hearing those horrific words his family transferred him to the Northern General hospital in Sheffield where one of the countries’ leading surgeons underwent the tough task of rebuilding Simon’s shattered leg. Tens of pins later and a metal splint within his left leg and ankle Simon seemed to have luck on his side as the surgeon announced a successful surgery. But now the hard work began for Simon.

A strong and independent individual, Simon started the long rehabilitation process with the support of his friends, family, and countless hours training in the gym with boxing supreme Ryan Rhodes.

“The extra work not only gave me what turned out to be the winning edge, but the confidence that my body was in a position where I trusted that I could really push myself.

“Riding speedway is a tough ask on anyone’s body, let along mine that has seen more crashes and breaks than I want to think about.”

What followed was a fantastic road to recovery and one of Simon’s best seasons of his career, a world wind of a season in fact.

Following eight months of rehabilitation, a strict diet and a positive attitude Simon felt ready to step back on a bike. Unsure on how he would perform, two clubs took a ‘punt’ on Simon.

Leicester Lions in the Elite League, a club writing new history with its recent reopening. And local team Sheffield Tigers where he took back his place as captain for another season.

As the season started Simon instantly blew the cobwebs out of his helmet and attacked the track in tremendous style. Simons sheer determination and grit was a flash back to his earl 20’s where he was known for his ruthless, hard riding style.

Stead added: “This was my second chance, I knew how lucky I was to get back on the bike and I wasn’t going to take it for granted.

“It had been such a battle through the recovery, probably the hardest recovery I’ve ever had to deal with. I saw the patience and endless support my family gave me to get me fit again and I knew this year I was going to give it everything.

Stead told us: “I was almost ready to walk away from the sport. At that point in my career I could barely think about getting back on a bike, let alone enjoying the success I’ve seen this season.

“From the moment I stepped back on the bike I knew how fortunate I was to be there and I wasn’t going to take it for granted. I pushed myself in the gym and in turn pushed myself on the bike.

“I am very proud of the numerous hours I spent in the gym with the guidance of Ryan Rhodes, and the team at Sheffield’s FIT4IT Hybrid Gym.

“The passion that had been missing for the last couple of years had reappeared- the hunger to take every corner as hard and fast as I could, I’ve always pride myself on being a fair

rider but I was there to really push myself to the max and in turn the results followed.”

As Simon stormed through his meeting for both Sheffield Tigers and Leicester Lions, the ‘underdog’ at the start of the season became a force to be reckoned with. And Simons new found determination didn’t go amiss as he received his call up for the Speedway World cup.

Simon said: “I thought that ship had sailed, to get the call up really showed that all the hard work and the pain through the recovery was worth is.”

GB manager, Alun Rossiter was quoted at the time “I’ve picked the team on current form and Simon deserves to be in there, it’s as simple as that.

“He’s also got experience and I believe he will love the conditions and the atmosphere at King’s Lynn, he admits it’s a track he likes racing on.

Stead said “I was on cloud nine at the time, I felt honoured to ride with Tai Woffinden, Chris ‘bomber’ Harris and Danny King. We all gave absolutely everything for our country and we were rewarded with a place in the final.

I was really proud of my racing that night and the effort from the whole team.”

The team made it straight through the final and although didn’t see the same success as they had in the previous round the team raise Great Britain into 4th in the world rankings Simon’s call up was his fifth year representing Great Britain following performances in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

More recently Simon topped off his winning season storming to victory and winning the Premier League Rid-

“I’ve looked at his scores and had a long chat with him and he is well and truly up for it, and he was so happy you could tell how proud he was.”

The team of four which included 2013 world champion Tai Woffinden as captain, Chris ‘Bomber’ Harris and Danny King turned out to be a dangerous formula as they stormed through the first round at Kings Lynn on the 26th July.

The first round was a dream start for Stead who flew out the gates in the first ride to make the race of his career as he lead the whole heat to take the win, the passionate ride set the standard early on for a night that saw the GB boys rocket to success.

Simon’s second ride was in heat 5 and a repeat of his first race, a rapid start from the outside gate four saw a pumped up and confident Yorkshire man leave Leicester teammate Jason Doyle, 3x world champion ( and current World champion) Greg Hancock and Italian Nicolas Covatti behind him coming out of turn two lap one.

Simon was also out in heats nine, fourteen and nineteen and finished second, third and third respectively.

After leading the opening world cup event Team Great Britain scored 44, USA 37, Australia 36 and Italy 10, and the GB boys headed straight to the final in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

ers’ Championship at his home track in Sheffield. The trophy had been one Simon had wanted most of his career and one that has certainly been the hardest to get.

Simon commented: “Winning the PLRC was a real cherry on the top of an unforgettable season. I couldn’t have done it without the team I’ve had behind me. The whole season was a real team effort and a year I will cherish.”

And if Simon’s year wasn’t enough he then turned his hand to TV presenting as he graced our television screens in September with Sky Sports and covered the Elite League playoffs.

Quite a year for our favourite Yorkshire man, and now the question is how will he top it this season?
