Frosty the Snowman took a wrong turn on his way north, and it looks like he couldn’t take the Florida heat.

The sad snowman drew his final frosty breath in the lawn of a house at 1725 Bayview Drive. He is survived by his dear friend Karen and his wife, Crystal.

May he rest in peace.

Mote prepares for gator exhibit There are 1.3 million alligators in the state of Florida. Soon, one of those will call Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium home.

A new exhibit, called “The Teeth Beneath: The Wild World of Gators, Crocs and Caimans,” will bring one American bull male gator and three female caimans to Mote. Caimans are similar to crocodiles but smaller, because their maximum size is 5 feet.

The exhibit will educate Mote visitors on how wetland and coastal habitats are vital to native species, Mote Aquarium Assistant Vice President Evan Barniskis said.

The exhibit, which will be located in the Ann and Alfred E. Goldstein Marine Mammal Research and Rehabilitation Center, will allow visitors to see the animals up close in an underwater viewing area, in their natural habitat with a land portion and also from above.

Like the “Otters & Their Waters” exhibit, the gator exhibit will educate visitors on watersheds that drain into the ocean as well as explain why the conservation of the species is so important.

Gators are a conservation success story, Barniskis said.

Brody is a Sarasota native who graduated in 2000 from Sarasota High School.

“This was a great place to grow up, and I wanted to make sure that kids who grew up here would continue to have those same opportunities, if not better,” he said.

Brody worked as a prosecutor in the local state attorney’s office and resigned earlier this year after practicing law with a suspended license for several weeks.

That suspension came after Brody did not provide documentation he had taken continuing legal education classes required by the Florida Bar Association.

“It was more of an administrative oversight than it was a substantive suspension of any type,” Brody said. “I took full responsibility for it. I admit it’s a mistake. But I don’t want it to define my candidacy.”

DID considers downtown promotional push Downtown leaders want to unite to advertise businesses in the heart of the city — but can they overcome their divisions?

When Lido Key residents first heard a proposal to turn the cityowned pool and pavilion into a privately operated venture, the response was overwhelmingly negative.

Since the concept was first presented in November 2015, it has undergone some changes. A mini-golf course was removed from the plans. The proposed restaurant was reduced from 305 seats to 200.

As the plans evolved, so did the reaction from Lido residents.

Their stance was notably softer at the last public discussion regarding the plans for the pavilion, an Aug. 18 workshop at City Hall.

“In my opinion, they’re showing good faith that they want to work with the neighborhood,” Lido Key Residents Association President Carl Shoffstall said after that meeting.

On Jan. 3, the City Commission will make a key decision regarding the Lido pool and pavilion. It will tell staff whether to negotiate a contract with Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners LLC, the group led by Daiquiri Deck coowner Troy Syprett that hopes to operate the city-owned facility.

Despite the changes, you can still count on outspoken opposition from many Lido residents.

Those residents are now less focused on the details of the plans for the pavilion, and more on a philosophical question: Should the public property near the public beach remain in public hands?

recreation areas that are open and accessible to all,” Riedlinger said.

The city is seeking a private operator for the pool and pavilion to address budget issues. In 2011, the city discussed closing the pool for half the year because it was losing money. Residents convinced officials the properties could generate revenue, instead.

On paper, the proposal from Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners is in line with the changes Lido Key residents proposed for the facilities: “enhanced food services,” a tiki bar, a splash-pad area for children. David Boswell, the city’s purchasing manager, said the private group has been responsive to public input.

“We told them, ‘This is what came out of the public meeting,’” Boswell said. “None of it was deal-breaking for them.”

Riedlinger said he had no issue with Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners specifically. Instead, he pointed to Marina Jack as an example of what can go wrong when a private group manages public land. He expressed concern that, as the private entity focused on turning a profit, public access could become restricted.

“I just have this really bad vision that this could happen here on Lido if we allow a private entity to take over,” Riedlinger said.

At previous meetings, Syprett has stressed he wants the pavilion area to remain publicly accessible, and that access to the public beach cannot be restricted.

Riedlinger said the city can improve the pavilion area without turning it over to a private operator. The city has $1.25 million in tourist development tax funds budgeted for pavilion upgrades.

That money is earmarked for restroom improvements, but Riedlinger said it could be used for a more wide-ranging project.

The city created a parks and recreation department this year, hiring Jerry Fogle as the director of that department. Riedlinger is encouraging residents to contact Fogle with their thoughts on how the pavilion can be improved while remaining a public asset.

He expects commissioners will be more sympathetic than they might have been five years ago, when budgets were tighter and parks weren’t a priority.

City staff isn’t making a hard recommendation on which direction to pursue — which means the commission will decide the fate of the Lido pavilion next month.

“Do they want us to enter contract negotiation with these guys, or do they want us to scrap the whole project and go back to square one?” Boswell said.

Eileen Hampshire is a believer in the power of promotion.

She uses it to bolster her own business, Art To Walk On, a rug store located at 16 S. Palm Ave. She attributes the store’s continued success in part to her decision to advertise it with a sponsorship on WUSF-TV. “People say to me, ‘You’re so lucky you have customers,’” Hampshire said. “You can’t sit there and hope people find you.”

Now, she wants to use it to help business throughout downtown.

A member of the Downtown Improvement District, Hampshire proposed funding a new promotional campaign for the heart of the city at that group’s last meeting.

Joint downtown marketing efforts aren’t a new concept.

Beginning in 2014, the “We Are Downtown” promotional campaign produced banners and informational brochures thanks to contributions from the DID and Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association.

Those efforts have struggled to unite the various factions within downtown, which includes the DID, SDMA and the Downtown Sarasota Alliance. Hampshire said those divisions may exist because the character of downtown varies from block to block.

If her proposal catches on, she wants to offer merchants the opportunity to chip in and promote a specific segment of downtown, whether it’s Palm Avenue, lower Main Street or State Street.

“Focus on those differences,” Hampshire said. “We’re like a mosaic of downtown.”

Ron Soto, a DID board member and president of the merchants group, agrees downtown could benefit from more promotion.

He doesn’t think any one group should tackle it alone, though.

He’s looking to St. Armands Circle — where the merchants’ St. Armands Circle Association and the property owners’ St. Armands Business Improvement District work on a unified campaign — as a model to emulate.

He and DID board member Steve Seidensticker also expressed interest in a social media-based campaign as the group continues its conversation.

“That’s the future,” Soto said.

Whether it’s online, over the air or in print, Hampshire is a strong advocate of getting out a positive message about the direction of downtown.

“We have a lot of individuals that are doing really good things,” she said. “We’re on the right track.”

SEASON’S BREWINGS Sarasota has a strong craft beer scene, but it’s still a trek to hop from one local brewery to the next. If you’ve got a louse of a brother who can’t bear spending time with the people who love him unless he has a drink in his system, that might work for you.

Start at Big Top Brewing Co. for an array of specialty beers on-tap — including seasonally appropriate variants like Christmas Cookie Blonde. Then, head to JDub’s Brewing Co. for a Poolside Kölsch on the outdoor patio, where your family can talk at length about how it’s warm in December.

MISHAPS Not all holidays go according to plan.

But sometimes you get the holiday you really wanted all along.

ife is full of surprises, and these stories prove the holidays are no different. Rice turkeys fall apart, babies are born earlier than planned, and sometimes the joke falls flat, but life’s little mishaps can be our greatest holiday memories.

THE CHARITABLE CAROLER

When I was 4 years old, I was in the mall with my family, and I heard a saxophonist playing by the Salvation Army donation bucket. I recognized the Christmas song he was playing, so I decided I would do my part and help him work for donations. Without announcing my plan to anyone, I went up to him, stood beside him, and started singing along with him while he played. I think a few more donations were put into that bucket as a result. Since then, I have not continued serenading the bell ringers, but it was especially sweet this year when I had my daughter contribute a dollar outside of Publix. Seeing her cute little face by the bucket had to convince someone else to donate too!

A RICE TRY It’s just us here, so it’s always nice to get together with other families. Otherwise it would be lonely. We’re vegan, and one year Zoey wanted a rice molded turkey and it kind of plopped. We just had rice. I tried to mold it with a gel-like substance, (but it didn’t work.) We ate mashed potatoes and bread and vegetables. We did all right.

I always remember my brother and I sitting on the top of our stairs, because we were not allowed to go down to the living room until both of my parents were awake and out of their bedroom. Some years we sat for minutes and others it seemed like hours. We always walked down to a tree packed with gifts.

We each took our spot in the living room (it never changed from year to year) while myself or my brother handed out gifts.

We would all put our gifts in a pile right in front of us. Then, and only then, could we start opening our gifts — one gift, one person at a time, so we each could see what the others received.

Honestly as an adult knowing the work and effort it took my parents to make each Christmas special, it was probably also a nice way to make the morning last a little longer. We lost my brother in July 2014 at the age of 29, so these are the memories I will always hold close to my heart.

This Christmas my parents have decided to go to Las Vegas.

I will be sending them a Christmas surprise of an Elvis Presley impersonator that will be picking them up at their hotel in an old pink Cadillac and taking them on a tour of Vegas.

AT THE TIME OF CHRIST’S BIRTH … For unto you is born this day …

hildren love to hear their grandparents and parents recount the details of whence their family came, the genealogy of who they are, how they came about and why they are. Indeed, our heritage, family values and principles depend on the continuous retelling of such important events.

This is why we take pleasure each year at this time recounting some of the lesser discussed details surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. We all know what happened on Christmas — as St. Luke masterfully wrote in his Gospel (see box). But having some of the context that led up to this holy, remarkable day adds to its richness.

In truth, Jesus’ birth is a story for Jews and Christians alike. After all, Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, were Jews. And the setting for this momentous, monumental event was in the heart of the land that God promised to Abraham and Moses — Israel.

The main characters leading up to Jesus’ birth — Mary, Joseph, Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, and her husband, Zacharias — were anything but celebrities in their day. They were as common as Iowa farmers. And yet, in reality, Mary and Joseph were indeed connected to royalty. Biblical scholars write they actually were cousins, both descendants from the lineage of King David, the longtime king of Israel.

But at that time — which was around 4 B.C. — the Jews of Judea (central Israel) were anything but a privileged, royal class. They were living under the rule of Caesar Augustus and his vast Roman empire and under the unpredictability of the maniac, King Herod, an Arab-Jew who ruled over Jerusalem and Bethlehem as a client king for Caesar Augustus.

“Herod inflicted such outrages upon (the Jews) as not even a beast could have done if it possessed the power to rule over men,” wrote the biblical historian Josephus. What’s more, Herod became infamous for murdering his wife, his wife’s father, her brother, three of his own sons and 300 of his military leaders.

Nonetheless, under Herod, the Jews managed to live with what biblical historian James Edward Talmadge called “some semblance of national autonomy.” They could practice their religion without much interference.

But there was no doubt the Jews did not relish their domination. The Jews kept to themselves and held particular dislike for the Samaritans, a racially mixed people. “The enmity between Jew and Samaritan was so intense that travelers between Judea and Galilee would make long detours rather than pass through Samaria,” Talmadge wrote.

This is what Mary and Joseph would encounter after they received word of Caesar Augustus’ order for a census.

He demanded that everyone register in his hometown. For Mary and Joseph, this meant traveling from Nazareth in Galilee in the north to Bethle-

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

That would have taken them right through Samaria. And let’s not forget: Mary was nine months pregnant.

In his Gospel on the birth of Christ, St. Luke was sparing on the details of Mary and Joseph’s trip. The fact there are few details must mean it was mostly uneventful. But you could imagine it otherwise: Any woman in her ninth month of pregnancy is physically miserable — can’t sit for long stretches, can’t sleep, constant heartburn, hemorrhoids. So imagine Mary and Joseph traveling in a caravan, with Mary riding much of the trip on a donkey. It was cold at night.

The trip would have taken about four days. On Dec. 23, they had two days to go before reaching Bethlehem. And at this point in the trip, they would just be passing through Samaria. Jewish travelers were marks for bandits.

God was watching over Mary and Joseph, of course. We know they made it, but only to find out that Bethlehem, normally a sleepy little town, was bustling with Jews who had returned to register for the census.

There was no room at the inn.

Mary and Joseph, we know, found a stable. But this wasn’t the stable we see on the Hallmark Christmas cards.

The stables in those days often were dark, cold caves with “mangers” — animal-feeding troughs carved into the stone walls; they were not wooden cribs padded with dry, neatly arranged hay.

With nowhere else to go, Mary gave birth … under the stars, amid the manure and muck, among the sheep, cows, goats and chickens, no doctors present to administer an epidural,

with Joseph, her carpenter husband, assisting as best he could. Those who have witnessed birth know it’s difficult in a hospital bed. Imagine the scene in a smelly, dark, cold cave.

Yet, this lowly, humble setting was the way Jesus Christ, the Savior whom God sent for mankind, came into this world.

Contrast the differences: Caesar Augustus maneuvering for worldly power and the biggest worldwide celebrity of his day; Herod the Great, a regional celebrity, abusing his power over his small dominion in unspeakable ways. They were all about selfcentered status, power and ego.

Mary and Joseph were the antithesis. Humble, not materially wealthy, ordinary in all appearances. And yet they were extraordinary.

God sent his messenger, the angel Gabriel, and stunned Mary that she would conceive miraculously and bring forth a son — the Son of the Highest who would “reign over the house of Jacob forever.” She would be his mother.

And Joseph, the quiet carpenter, he fretted over what would happen to Mary, his fiancée, if people found out she was pregnant before they were married. The angel Gabriel gave comfort to Joseph, just as he did to Mary.

And with humility and obedience and far below the radar screen of celebrity status, they carried out God’s will, remembering all the while Gabriel’s assurance to Mary: “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.”

This is our heritage.

T

he Sarasota City Commission at its Nov. 21 meeting voted to send a trimmed down transportation plan to the state to meet a state deadline for review. This trimming responded to much public input, especially from a new organization called STOP! — the exclamation point being part of the name — a group of citizen activists challenging how poorly the current city planning code is working.

If you don’t live in downtown Sarasota or haven’t driven through recently, you may be wondering what in the world has triggered so much community concern. But as someone who does live downtown, I can tell you I not only sympathize with STOP!, I felt compelled to join them.

The commission’s recent action becomes the first step in what will be the city’s 2017 efforts to upgrade the planning process governing future development in the city.

Our city streets are becoming alleyways where walkers are intimidated by height and

mass crowding in on them, lucky if they can walk two abreast on the sidewalks.

Indeed, Sarasota is becoming the Florence of Florida ... but that’s not a good thing.

The streets of historic Florence are narrow, and you get no idea of human habitat unless the doors into buildings happen to be open. There are gardens in there, but quality of life is limited to internal courtyards.

Maybe walling in gave a sense of security to the ancient Florentians, but is that the way we want our new buildings to be developed?

With most recent construction in the city, outside, the buildings communicate that you and your quality of life are unimportant. One can only hope that somewhere inside, the residents see green space.

The VUE, as a case in point, is constructed up to its nearly two-and-a-half-acre plot line and, in some instances, over the public sidewalk. It exists by city administrative approval in a process that had no place for Planning Board approval or public hearing. Their courtyard will have green space, but how will that mitigate a lowered

quality of life for everyone else in the city?

If you notice, all the other buildings in the quadrant along Gulfstream from the bay to U.S. 41 are built to setbacks with green space and openness for all to enjoy.

The VUE received approval with no attention to that context, how it fits in with what’s around it and its impact on hundreds of immediate neighbors?

And traffic: Although The VUE sits directly on U.S. 41, its several hundred residents and hotel guests will have no exit from that property to go north except to go west up Ritz Carlton Drive, squeeze by the fountain at the RitzCarlton,Sarasota, go south down Watergate Drive and out Sunset Drive; from there, they must go east onto Gulfstream Avenue to finally go north at the light at Gulfstream and 41.

Or, they can go east out First Street and, if they can get across the right turn lane to Gulfstream, go south on 41 to head east again on Main Street, there to finally turn north via Cocoanut (assuming the construction blocking Cocoanut is completed by then).

Maybe two years from now, a roundabout will shorten their distance, allowing a U-turn at U.S. 41 and Gulfstream, again assuming no problem crossing a right turn lane going to Gulfstream.

See why STOP! wants a change in process and a return to public input?

Here’s another example.

Sarasota Housing Authority property on Boulevard of the Arts and Cocoanut Avenue contains McCown Towers and The Annex. Seniors and disabled persons have been living there for 40-plus years. Open green space surrounds the buildings. On Florida Avenue at Fifth Street, the property has a side entrance into the courtyard between the two buildings.

The entrance was used by garbage trucks and was a necessary entrance for fire engines.

There is, however, a new administratively approved development on the south side of Fifth up to the Towers and Annex property line.

Again, without any attention to context, there is — said to be directed by the city — an overhang over the public sidewalk

along Fifth.

Without any attention to the side entrance to the SHA property, the protrusion into the right of way makes it impossible for any large truck to enter the gateway, whether for service or emergency.

It’s perhaps the most painful example of city staff paying no attention to context. There was nothing illegal about the Towers’ entrance, but because of city inattention to secondary effects, the senior citizens in half the complex have no entrance for fire engines.

Adequate notice and a public hearing would have solved this travesty before it got started.

To add insult to injury, the developer on Fifth has contacted the Housing Authority seeking major adjustments to the SHA property — including tree removal — because it can’t adequately reach that side of the new building that’s going up, to paint it and maintain it in the future. Again, we need a return to an open public process.

And now you know why, as confusing as putting the two words together might sound, Sarasota residents are shouting “Go STOP!”

A COMEDIC CHRISTMAS Every other year or so growing up, my family would take a road trip to North Dakota to visit my grandmother. Often times we’d “swing by” Texas to pick up my dad’s twin sister and our cousin, Kris. She is an only child, and the only cousin within a 10-year age span of me and my two siblings, so we were all especially close.

One year on our road trip, my older sister and Cousin Kris told me this “joke” to see if they could get me to laugh: “A St. Bernard was wearing a red sweater and his mom walked in and said, ‘I thought you were wearing a green sweater.’” My sister and Cousin Kris laughed hysterically as they told the “joke” and I thought, not wanting to be the little sister who didn’t get it, I better laugh, too. They finally let me in that the punchline is the joke isn’t funny, and the point is to see if they could get you to laugh (even though the “joke” made no sense).

I was in on the joke! I wanted to try it, and we decided our parents made the perfect people to pitch.

A sweet and happy man, my dad’s stone-cold response was still, “That’s not funny. I don’t get it.” We never did get him to join in on the giggles that trip, no matter how many times we repeated the red sweater/green sweater one-liner.

To this day, every Christmas when someone walks through the door in a red sweater, you can hear a Barker family member say, “I thought you were wearing a green sweater!” Almost 30 years later, the joke makes us all laugh until we cry. We lost our aunt, my dad’s twin, to brain cancer a few years ago and our cousin Kris serves as a missionary in Indonesia, so we aren’t able to visit as often as we used to. The “St. Bernard Joke” is now an old inside family joke that may not fill the hearts of those around us as we try to explain it anew each year, but warms ours beyond measure and sparks a happy memory of togetherness.

I went out to take the dog to the bathroom.

When I came back up on the elevator, I came out of the elevator there is our cat, Stripes.

THE HOLIDAY GLOW

OVERSEAS MEMORIES

At Christmastime in 1999, I was eight months pregnant with our first son and my family was planning a visit. In addition to having the nursery ready, I managed to get the house decorated, the tree up, and the fridge stocked for a house full of company.

The night before they arrived, I had some complications with my pregnancy and was admitted into the hospital.

Over the next few days I had a steady stream of family keep me company in the hospital — who each arrived with gifts in hand. Despite the circumstances, I felt quite spoiled! Our son, Wyatt, was born the day after Christmas and welcomed to the world by our family. He spent two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, where together we rang in the millennium.

We light a bunch of menorahs every night of Hanukkah, 15 or so, and the glow is absolutely beautiful! A couple of the menorahs are from Israel, and a couple were purchased at the Temple Emanu-El Judaica Shop.

I was born and raised in the United Kingdom before moving here nearly 20 years ago. Christmas when I was a kid near London in the early 1970s was always magical. My earliest memory is of waking excited that it was Christmas and being told by my mother it was still only the 20th!

I remember Christmas stockings on the end of our bed that were just old socks, which weren’t stuffed with electronics, but fruit and candy. I remember the year when my dad told my mother on Christmas Eve at 6:30 p.m. that the frozen turkey she was trying to thaw pre-microwave ovens would, by his calculation, be thawed by lunch on the 26th!

Being forced to walk outside after Christmas dinner with the family was a battle with us!

Supper on Christmas Day was a favorite. We had traditional mince pies, Christmas pudding and, best of all, Christmas cake — which is a fruit cake with thick marzipan and hard icing.

In Britain, the day after Christmas is Boxing Day and was known as such because prize fighting was once one of the entertainments people enjoyed after a day of overindulgence. By the time I was growing up, Boxing Day was going to watch a soccer match and then coming back with an appetite for more Christmas cake.

Although she was unable to read with the festive spectacles, they did set the tone for an evening of fun and learning to celebrate the Hanukkah season.

After reading “Light the Menorah” and “I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Dreidel,” children dispersed to assemble holiday crafts.

Freeman has been doing the Hanukkah event for six years, but she has yet to grow tired of it.

“They all have big, wide eyes and are happy,” Freedman said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

ack Frost wasn’t quite nipping at the noses of participants Dec. 9 during the third annual Holiday Scavenger Hunt, but there was definitely a chill in the air as people went from store to store, solving clues.

The event was hosted by the Burns Court Neighborhood Association as part of its Second Friday program. Every month between October and May, Burns Court store owners open up their doors to promote their businesses.

This month, the association stayed with tradition and put a holiday spin on the event.

Each participant was given a card with the names of the 12 participating stores. Stores posted a clue near its front door. Once participants solved the clue, they had to find the item the clue referred to, which was hidden somewhere in the store. Participants used their cards to enter a raffle.

“It’s just perfect,” Anita Heinrich said while working through the scavenger hunt with her granddaughter. “The problem is when you into these stores you’re so distracted. There is so much you want to see. I already

A

lex Turner’s first goal as a Cardinal Mooney Cougar was unremarkable. It came in a 7-1 loss to Riverview during his freshman year.

No one knew it at the time, but that goal was the beginning of an incredible and historic soccer career. On Dec. 1, in a home game against rival DeSoto County, Turner netted his 100th goal. He is the first Cougar in history to accomplish the feat.

Turner will not soon forget the moment.

“The ball came out wide to (sophomore Brandon) Boynes,” Turner said. “He crossed it into the box. I made a run, finished with a header, top left corner.”

Turner shook his head when asked what the accomplishment means to him.

“It means a whole lot,” he said.

“I’m happy to be helping the team out, but I’ve got a good team around me. I believe in them, and they believe in me. I couldn’t do it without my teammates.”

Turner said he has been playing the game since he was 7 year old.

It came naturally to him, he said, even though his first year was spent playing goalie. His coaches soon figured out that offense was more Turner’s speed.

Many elite athletes claim their mind goes blank while playing, and they don’t think about anything. They just rapidly read situations and react. Not Turner. He said his mind is constantly racing during games.

“Where’s the ball? What position do I need to be in? Am I going to get injured?”

Those are just some of the things racking Turner’s brain while he is racking up points.

His favorite goal-related moment came during his freshman year, also against DeSoto.

Cardinal Mooney was down 2-0 with about eight minutes to go.

Turner decided that losing was not an option, and put the team on his back. He quickly scored to get

the Cougars on the board. Then, he scored again, and once more for good measure. A hat trick in less than eight minutes to give Turner’s team a 3-2 win against a bitter rival.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling after that game,” Turner said.

Cardinal Mooney (7-0-1 as of Dec. 15) is off to its best start as a team in recent memory. The Cougars won the Class 2A District 11 title last season, and look to be even stronger this year. The team lost just two seniors, and though last year’s defeat against Tampa Catholic in the regional final was rough, it bonded the returning players together in a way that Turner thinks will make all the difference now.

“Look out for us,” he said. “Our eyes are on the prize (of a state title), and we are going to do whatever it takes to get what we want.”

Turner is not a showboater, even on his 100th goal. He gets excited when he scores, but said, “I’m not gonna do ‘the worm’ in the corner or take off my shirt.

“If we get to the state finals and I score, the shirt might come off,” Turner said.

Girls on the Run teaches lessons everyone should learn I n my time working at the Observer and learning the craft at the University of Missouri, I’ve never interviewed a happier set of people than the members, teachers and director of Girls on the Run. I don’t mean happy to be interviewed, though they were that, too. They want their program to spread across the country, so every young girl can get involved.

I mean that they were all happy — happy to be alive, to be able to bond with their fellow runners, to be themselves.

Girls on the Run is an afterschool program that teaches young girls life skills through running, including how to be healthy, joyful and confident, according to Laura Moore. She’s the director of Girls on the Run Tampa Bay, which oversees the program in Sarasota schools.

The girls set running goals for themselves throughout the fall semester, making sure they are manageable. At the end of the semester, there’s a celebratory Girls on the Run 5K presented

by UnitedHealthcare that brings together girls from across the Tampa Bay area. Moore called the program everything young girls need to thrive “in a beautiful, sparkly package.”

“You have to accomplish something from within in order to have true confidence,” Moore said. “People can give you compliments, but one negative

Sitting down at a picnic table in Phillippi Shores Elementary School’s courtyard, I was greeted by the shining faces of thirdgrader Rylee Roads, fourthgraders Ciara Perez, Carley Ramsden and Collier Moser, and fifth-grader Reese Nippert, members of the school’s Girls on the Run chapter. Their coaches, second-grade teacher Kelly Collins and fourth-grade teacher Katie Stults, sat beside them beaming. There were 15 girls in

the program at Phillippi, but not all of them were available to talk.

When I asked the girls what they learn at Girls on the Run, five hands shot to the sky.

“We learn empathy!” Moser said.

“We learn about Star Power,” Roads added.

I didn’t know what that meant, but Roads was excited to explain. “If you’re sad, you can try making yourself happy by making someone else happy.

Like, if you’re not playing with anyone and someone asks if you’re OK and asks you to play with them, they are activating your Star Power by making good

things happen for you.”

The girls get special nicknames during the program that show off their personality traits.

These nicknames change as the program goes on, and the girls learn more about themselves.

Perez started as “Confident Ciara,” but changed hers to “Creative Ciara” as time passed.

There is also “Crazy Carley” and “Runnin’, Rockin’ Rylee.”

What Girl on the Run means to Nippert is different than the others. In May, she was on vacation at the beach when she stepped into a boat. Nothing out of the ordinary. Except when she put pressure on her foot,

she lost control of her leg. She had suffered Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, which is severe, burning pain from nerve damage. Nippert lost the ability to walk, and didn’t regain it until August through physical therapy. When Girls on the Run started up, she still couldn’t run.

Brooke Collins, Kelly Collins’ daughter who attends Riverview High School, coached with the group as well. She slowly helped Nippert learn to run again, with support from everyone.

“All the other girls would cheer me on,” Nippert said.

“They were like, ‘Go Reese, go!’

It was so fun.”

Nippert was able to compete in the 5K on Dec. 10 in St. Petersburg.

Along with being a sphere of positivity, the program is a place where girls can be girls.

“Sometimes when boys are around, you kind of feel weird to be yourself,” Nippert said. “But when you’re around a bunch of girls, it makes you feel normal.”

“And boys always say stuff like, ‘Ew, you throw like a girl,’ but honestly, girls can be 10 times stronger than boys,” Ramsden added.

All aboard to tour Siesta Key lights

I

t wouldn’t be Christmas on Siesta Key without the annual holiday lighting competition.

This year’s contest was held Dec. 14 and included 22 condos, up from 14 last year.

The contest is sponsored the Siesta Key Condominium Council, the Siesta Key Village Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

Representatives from each group boarded the Siesta Trolley with Joe Volpe from the Siesta Key Association.

Although judging got off to a slow start at Terrace West, it picked up quickly as the trolley cruised past Peppertree Bay. Both sides of the street were decked with holiday lights.

Also new this year were the welcome committees. Two condominiums, Bay Tree Club and Excelsior Beach to Bay, tailgated the trolley’s arrival and were there to greet judges with holiday songs.

he Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida hosted a sweet competition Dec. 10-11 at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall.

It was its first year hosting the eighth annual event, previously hosted by Community Youth Development.

“We’re keeping it alive,” said Jaime Estes, resource development specialist of Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida.

All the gingerbread houses were sold, with proceeds benefiting the Girl Scouts.

Estes said she is already looking forward to hosting it again
