Braves select Sarasota County as spring training home The Atlanta Braves are exclusively negotiating with Sarasota County to be the team’s new spring training home, the MLB team said Tuesday.

The new facilities would be in North Port within the West Villages development.

Jeff Maultsby, director of business and economic development for Sarasota County, called Tuesday a landmark day but stressed a deal is not yet finalized.

Once an agreement is set, Maultsby said the county’s

financial contribution to the construction of a stadium complex will come from the tourist development tax up to the county’s charter cap limit, which is expected to be approximately $21 million.

If the deal is completed as expected, the plan is for the Braves to move to Sarasota County for the 2019 season.

Maultsby said the county is ecstatic to be adding a MLB spring training site.

“There are only 30 of these franchises in existence, and a limited num-

ber of them in the state of Florida,” he said. “For us to now have two of them in our community will benefit us exponentially.”

The Baltimore Orioles hold spring training at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

Maultsby said the next update will come Jan. 24 at a County Commission meeting.

The Braves currently hold spring training at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista.

The field for the March 14 City Commission race is set with eight candidates running for two seats on the board.

The candidates in the citywide at-large election are: n Jen Ahearn-Koch, neighborhood leader n Fredd “Glossie” Atkins, former mayor n Hagen Brody, attorney n Susan Chapman, incumbent city commissioner n Patrick Gannon, planning board member n Martin Hyde, small-business owner n Mikael Sandstrom, marketing and technology professional n Matt Sperling, retired investment banker Voters will be allowed to vote for two candidates. The deadline to register to vote for the municipal election is Feb. 13.

Commissioner Suzanne Atwell, who holds the other at-large seat, is not seeking re-election.

If two candidates do not win a majority in the March 14 election, a runoff will be held May 9. The victorious candidates will officially join the commission May 12.

Signal change On Longboat and in Sarasota, there’s an eagerness to see immediate improvements to traffic woes — but is that possible?

easonal traffic congestion is an annual source of consternation in Sarasota and on its barrier islands, and there’s seemingly no relief on the way anytime soon.

The city of Sarasota and town of Longboat Key are working toward potential solutions, but those are of little comfort in 2017.

A regional barrier island traffic study likely won’t be completed until 2018. Roundabouts at key intersections on U.S. 41 won’t be built for another four years, at least.

Sarasota Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown said traffic issues are a priority for local leaders, but the reality is there are no quick fixes.

“There are some things, long term, we believe will help,” Brown said. “The short-term solutions are not going to provide the kind of relief people are looking for.”

Still, residents in both municipalities are calling for more immediate action.

Lou Costa, a retired engineer who lives on Bird Key, is lobbying the city to focus its attention on the intersections at Fruitville Road and Gulfstream Avenue along U.S. 41. He’s working with fellow Sarasota resident Lou Dorff on an idea he said will cut down on the time it takes to get from the barrier islands to the mainland during rush hour by 30%.

His pitch: Place traffic cops at those two problem intersections from 3 to 5 p.m. daily. He said officers can prevent drivers from blocking the intersections, which exacerbates congestion on an already-crowded roadway.

Cars leaving the barrier islands and turning left onto U.S. 41 frequently block the intersection when the lights change, making congestion worse on an already crowded roadway.

Per his calculations, it would cost $31,500 to place two cops on U.S. 41 for an average of 2.5 hours a day for 20 weeks. He said that’s a small price to pay — whether it’s the state or local governments footing the bill. The proposal is based on his anecdotal observations, but he’s still confident it would address some of the traffic problems.

“All you have to do is sit at the intersection and watch what happens,” Costa said.

The two men have found allies on Longboat. The resident-led Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force has been focusing on traffic solutions for a couple of years now, chairman Tom Freiwald said. It has a list of more than 100 proposed fixes, and is focusing on getting local officials to try a few of them to see if they’d work.

One of those proposals?

Installing traffic cops along U.S. 41 to ensure the traffic lights at Gulfstream and Fruitville are synchronized. They’re not necessarily advocating for a long-term investment, but they think testing it for a few days couldn’t hurt.

“Our perspective is, none of us are sure what are good ideas and what are bad ideas, so why don’t we try out some ideas for a few days at a time?” Freiwald said.

On Tuesday, Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans sent a letter to Sarasota Mayor Willie Shaw expressing a willingness to share the cost burden of implementing the traffic cop proposal.

“These locations have proven to be interrelated in producing the most significant choke point to traffic traveling east from Bird Key, St. Armands Circle, Lido Key and Longboat Key,” Gans wrote in the letter.

short-term efforts to relieve congestion, even if they don’t solve the problems completely.

“We know these are just BandAids at this point, but they’re necessary Band-Aids,” Gans said.

Longboat Town Manager Dave Bullock agreed the proposal might not have a significant impact on congestion, but that leaders need to show residents they know the anxiety this issue is causing.

“From our perspective, a significant part of the frustration is it doesn’t appear anyone is doing anything,” Bullock said. “While there may be planning in place, the popular perception is no one’s doing anything. Any attempt to experiment is better than sitting and waiting.”

Stakeholders on St. Armands Circle are also rallying behind the effort to get some traffic improvement efforts underway this season. And Downtown Improvement District board member Mark Kauffman suggested the cost could be split between multiple entities — including private businesses that would benefit, such as the Longboat Key Club and Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota.

“I think you can accumulate the money quickly,” Kauffman said.

“You have to show you’re trying something, whether it works or not.”

Right now, city officials say the proposal might prove difficult.

The streets in question are under state control, and Brown suggested the Florida Department of Transportation would not let the city manage the traffic signals at those intersections.

“It’s much more complicated than it seems,” Brown said.

Their attention is being given to other avenues of addressing traffic issues. Sarasota Police Department is looking for ways to discourage drivers from blocking the intersections. Police have placed instructional signs along the roadway and plan to soon post motorcycle cops at the intersections for enforcement purposes, pending state approval.

There’s pessimism among city officials about the ability to take more significant steps to lighten the load on the road network during the next four months.

On Longboat, however, there is a desire to keep working toward any fixes that might improve the current conditions — and to persuade their partners in the region to do the same.

“We’re in a position where we can’t make our wishes come true by ourselves,” Gans said. “We have to depend on the city in this case, on the state in other cases, on Manatee County.”

Once again, entrepreneur Harvey Vengroff’s plans to build an affordable apartment complex on Fruitville Road have reached an impasse.

Last May, Vengroff threatened to pull the project after the city pushed for annual inspections of the property. The two sides quickly brokered a compromise, and Vengroff has proceeded through the city’s review process.

The plans for Sarasota Station have been pared down during the past year, reduced from 393 to 368 units. Vengroff has invested about $175,000 into the plans and city fees and hoped to begin building this fall on the 7.9-acre site at 2211 Fruitville Road.

Now, though, his team says construction won’t begin until next year — if it begins at all. Joe Barnette, Vengroff’s partner on the project, said city regulations are complicating the development process and jeopardizing the future of the apartment plans.

water and sewer fees to requirements governing the location of the train cars on-site that include Bob’s Diner. Barnette is pushing the city for greater flexibility to secure an affordable housing project near the downtown core.

“Arguably, it’s the most important project in the city right now,” Barnette said. “Who do they think is going to work in all of those condos and hotels being built downtown?”

is focused on trees. Currently, he said, there are about 138 trees on the site — most of which are invasive species that were not intentionally planted. After meeting with the city arborist, Vengroff’s team agreed to plant at least 140 trees to mitigate the project’s impact. They also agreed to try to save about a dozen trees on the site.

After that conversation, Barnette found out there was more tree work left to do. The developer had to have a certified survey of the site identifying the location of

each tree, with photographs and a narrative detailing why it would or wouldn’t be saved. This, too, proved to be a sticking point for Vengroff’s team.

“Imagine the time and money involved in getting that done — and that’s a minor thing,” Barnette said.

This is the first high-profile test of the city’s new tree protection rules. Last year, staff worked closely with residents to ensure new development didn’t wipe out quality trees after a group pushed the city for stronger regulations.

City Manager Tom Barwin plans to meet with Vengroff’s team next week to discuss the future of the project. But as more developers begin to grapple with a more stringent tree ordinance, will problems with those regulations begin to grow?

GROWING PAINS

For Nathan Wilson, one of the most outspoken advocates for the strengthened tree regulations, this was a landmark week.

He helped two other men install trees Wednesday morning in his

neighbors’ yards in Arlington Park. This represented the first time the city mitigated the loss of trees by planting on private property, one of the many tree policy changes.

He’s proud of the progress resident activists have made. Before the new regulations were implemented, Wilson said, developers could clear a lot with large trees over the weekend without arousing suspicion. Now, builders must pull permits before removing almost any tree, and protective barriers must be erected around trees to protect them from the impact of construction.

“We’re asking for a lot of things that we didn’t in the past because we had a lot of problems,” Wilson said. “A lot of people really care about the trees.”

But he said the new regulations aren’t perfect. He regretted that the development community wasn’t more active as the city revised its tree standards, a process that involved several public meetings. Now, he said, problems are revealing themselves — and he wants them fixed, too.

“We’re willing to go back to the table and make the code easier for people to read, easier to interpret and a little more flexible,” Wilson said. “We recognize it’s gotten difficult for people — homeowners and developers.”

On Jan. 13, City Commissioner Liz Alpert got an email from Bird Key resident Stuart Love. In the email, Love expresses frustration that he’s not allowed to remove two palm trees from his front yard. He said the palms are nonnative, and he proposed replacing them with three new palm trees, but staff denied his request.

tended consequences of a new city ordinance,” Love wrote in the email.

Wilson and other tree preservation advocates don’t want to be a source of frustration. He’s run into his own issues: When he was searching for 4-inch diameter trees to plant as mitigation — the standard outlined in the code — he had to buy them from a grower in Clermont, about 20 miles west of Orlando. The next closest seller he found is in Tallahassee.

“From an environmental standpoint, that kind of defeats the whole purpose,” Wilson said.

“That wasn’t our goal, and it’s burdensome on the developer.”

A group of residents is meeting with city staff next week to discuss how the regulations can be refined. The goal is to save the trees worth saving while not asking too much of private property owners.

At this point, the future of the Vengroff apartment project is unclear. Regardless of the outcome in that case, Wilson said he hopes to avoid any additional complaints about the standards outlined in the ordinance.

“We will do what we can to find a middle ground for everybody, so everybody appreciates the trees,” he said.

In June 2013, the city hired a pair of consultants to conduct a twoand-a-half year effort to write a new set of citywide zoning regulations.

Three-and-a-half years later, Urban Design Studio Director Karin Murphy is still working on writing that form-based code.

She has a new partner, Senior Planning Technician Briana Dobbs, to help finalize the eightchapter zoning document.

In October, Murphy shared a rough draft of the code with city staff. The draft outlines the planners’ strategy for creating a more urban environment in Sarasota while creating better predictability for residents and developers. But she said it’ll probably be another year before hearings begin on adopting a final version of the new regulations.

throughout the city. It’s another opportunity for Murphy to share her vision and for residents to tell her what aspects they do and don’t like.

“There’s only two of us and 55,000 of them,” Murphy said.

“We had to get a good structure going to get feedback.”

She’s aware of the trepidation surrounding the new code. The resident activist group STOP! is working to prevent the expansion of the administrative-approval process, which allows the city staff to evaluate whether a proposed development satisfies the applicable regulations. Individual

neighborhoods are worried about significant changes to the fabric of their area.

Murphy is intent on tailoring the code to the specific predilections of city residents. There’s a point at which she’ll tell people their desires are not in line with the principles of New Urbanist planning, but she’s trying to reach that point as infrequently as possible.

“My ultimate goal with them always is to build consensus,” she said. “If we don’t build consensus, the code won’t be adopted.”

That approach is producing an unusually narrowly focused

form-based code. The second article of the zoning code, for example, contains an index of specific regulations that apply to individual neighborhoods. This is a finer-grain approach than traditional form-based codes, which apply more general zoning subcategories to several areas throughout a city.

“We’re finding it’s being extremely helpful,” Murphy said.

“It functions the way they want to, but it’s been redone into a form-based style.”

Jane Nutter Johnson, president of the Indian Beach/Sapphire Shores Association, had a positive reaction to her meeting last week with the Urban Design Studio.

She said her neighborhood might be less complicated than others, because it’s already largely built out, but she doesn’t fear the area will be negatively affected by the changes.

“I don’t think the new code is going to be that different for us,” Johnson said.

As she works to accommodate a city wary of New Urbanist hallmarks, such as increased density and shallow building setbacks, is Murphy concerned about veering too far away from her planning principles?

Right now, the answer is no. She said the new code positions the city to take steps toward a better urban environment at its own pace.

In other words, it maintains fundamental aspects of what residents like now while weaving in the fabric that will allow the city to evolve in the future.

“I’m very comfortable that we’ve got the heart of all that great urbanism,” she said.

Working with a detailed map of all the lots in the city, Murphy and Dobbs are continually refining their plan to create a more cohesive Sarasota — with natural transitions between neighborhoods with different characters.

The code will never be perfect.

Murphy said city staff should remain vigilant in reviewing the code once the document is officially adopted to ensure any problems that arise are addressed promptly.

Still, Murphy hopes the community groundwork being laid now will lead to widespread buyin when the code is finally ready for public hearings — even if that’s not until 2018.

“At the end of the day, I want people to say, ‘Yeah, they listened, we all worked together, and it’s a better product for it.’” Murphy said.

THE REALITIES OF CONGESTION The sooner Sarasota city and county leaders start implementing anti-congestion strategies, short and long term, the easier and less costly they will be.

arasota County commissioners, Sarasota city commissioners and Longboat Key town commissioners will be wrestling with some tough, perennial issues in 2017. Here is some advice to consider as they address the most pressing issues of growth and traffic, homelessness and affordable housing. This column will start with growth and traffic.

Since season is upon us, traffic looms large in everyone’s daily life now. The Sarasota area is simply fabulous. Indeed, most of us transplants moved here because this place beat the competition for quality of life. Such an attractive place will, well, attract lots of new residents.

And new people have just as much right to be here as those who moved here in the past, or even those who were born and raised here.

Owners of land have the right to build new housing or commercial properties on it, just as past landowners built the houses we live in and commercial buildings we work in.

Limiting growth is both morally and practically bankrupt: Morally bankrupt because it assumes those of us here who already consume development are justified in stopping others from following suit, and practically bankrupt because even the most stringent growth controls fail to prevent growth in attractive places — it just makes them prohibitively expensive and clogged with traffic, lowering the quality of life for everyone.

But growth does put a real burden on the county commissioners.

If they accept that new people have the right to live and work here and land owners have the right to develop, then they must meet the needs of that growth.

New residents and workers pay the same taxes for the same services

those of us already living here do. Per person, new housing doesn’t demand any more transportation, sewer or water, police, fire or trash collection than do the houses and businesses already here.

So with specific examples such as the Vue condominium and Westin Hotel at the corner of U.S. 41 and Gulfstream and the proposed Promenade at Stickney Point and U.S. 41, yes, direct effects on the neighbors and on traffic around the projects must be addressed. Some of that is the responsibility of the developer and subject to review by the respective commissions.

But at the same time the city and county have taken on responsibility for providing us all with transportation infrastructure, they owe just as much to those new properties as they do to the existing commercial developments on the other corners of those two intersections.

A simple reality of an attractive, growing community is that the transportation system must keep growing, too. Congestion is simply more people trying to travel than the capacity of the system. Sarasota has more roads and some wider roads now than it did in 1966 or 1986, and the same will simply have to be true in 2036.

I frequently hear that the answer is not with the road system but “encouraging residents to get out of their cars and use other methods of transit.” That is important, but also a tiny part of the picture.

Only about 2% of travel in the Sarasota region is by transit, so even unprecedented success at increasing it, say tripling the share, would still leave mass transit carrying less than 10% of travel in the region.

Indeed, major metropolitan areas throughout the United States have for decades spent 30% to 60% of their transportation budgets on public transit and failed to boost their share of travel above a few percent. That means that at the same time they were spending only 40% to 70% of their transportation budget on roads, which still carry 90% or more of travel. In other words, they were letting the road system fall behind, get worse

and become more congested.

Sarasota would be ill-served by repeating that mistake.

Some of the answer is that growth must be spread out to areas where there is room for new transportation infrastructure. Meanwhile, some of the county will get denser, and fighting congestion will be more challenging.

Transit can do its share with smart elements like bus-rapid transit in the densest corridors. The best transit, however, will be road-based, so that investment in new and wider roads gets double bang for the buck.

Even more important is developing parking, parking pricing and seasonal transit services that are well designed to serve temporary residents and vacationers; well designed to link their origins and destinations; and well marketed as an alternative to driving. Other resort communities, such as South Beach in Miami and Sedona, Ariz., and Vail, Colo., have models from which we can learn.

But the bulk of the work at addressing congestion will be: n An improved road network and management, characterized by extending roads into new development, improving intersections and adding traffic signals; n Expanding some roads in existing right of way, including underpasses or overpasses at major intersections; n And using new technologies to manage the flow of traffic by controlling signal timing, speeding up clearing incidents, improving pedestrian crossing, etc. Houston, for example, more than any other major city, reduced the growth of congestion by focusing on adding road capacity where possible and using technology and design to get the most out of existing roads.

All of this, and likely more, will be needed. It is not easy or cheap, but it is the reality of dealing with congestion. The sooner Sarasota leaders recognize this and start taking action, short and long term, the easier and less costly it will be.

Lee County model: Grade-separated through lanes on major roads Lee County is regarded as one the leading communities in adopting a comprehensive traffic strategy. Here’s one example: Lee County has made good use to date of gradeseparated intersections.

Further, the county has under design for the Metro Parkway and Colonial Boulevard intersection tolled lanes that pass over the intersections.

The use of grade-separated through lanes at intersections represents a compromise that provides significantly increased capacity to the roadway network while having significantly less impact on access to adjacent properties than would a fully limited-access facility or a major widening of the arterial.

Your Jan. 12 edition writer, David Conway, alluded to comments from merchants and resident complaints, re: Thunder on the Bay. As a five-year resident of a condo facing Main Street, I know of no one in our building, in the center of this charity fundraiser, who was negative toward the event. Nor have I ever spoken to anyone who has not missed the Chalk Festival.

But, a quote from business owner Ravi Perma was contradictory, stating, other than the noise from the bandstand, he was in favor of the event.

Well, Mr. Perma, how many times have you been asked to respect your neighbors who, by the way, pay almost $1.5 million in property taxes, to give us a good night’s sleep by the drunken partiers even past closing time?

And, your hidden speakers continue to be used and not removed. Try moving all your furniture around the corner facing Palm. At least after 7 p.m. All other food service establishments on Main Street either remove all their furniture or condense to one area and secure from use. Practice what you preach.

The good, the bad and the ugly The Good: Not every city has a national cemetery, but Sarasota was picked as one that does. A friend of mine, from my Antique Automobile Club, passed away recently, and as a former military member, he was buried at the cemetery.

What a beautiful and peaceful place situated in the middle of Sarasota County it is. This cemetery is benefiting our former military members.

The Bad: Building commercial as well as residential

developments, without preplanning roads (think the Mall at University Town Center) is a perfect example of city, county and the state’s ignorant and non-thinking planning. Don’t get me wrong, I was for the mall, but just not before road building was completed. Common sense should have told the government agencies this first!

The Ugly: As a full-time, 30-year resident of Sarasota, I have been a witness to many things, from University Parkway being a two-lane road that ended at Interstate 75, to Clark Road, also ending at I-75, including Lakewood Ranch changing from a figment of someone’s imagination, to a full-blown reality. But listening to some city officials saying they could do nothing about allowing overdevelopment of Sarasota may be true now, but was not true when forethought could have mitigated some of the overbuilding and traffic problems we are just now seeing. Don’t get me wrong, I was the president of the Historical Society for eight years, but I have also been a developer and builder in Sarasota for these past 30 years. I have gone to and participated in many city and county planning board and commission meetings, so you can’t fool me by saying that nothing could have been done.

The Ugly: Just look at the building called The Vue, smack in the middle of downtown Sarasota. If the hotel that is being built now was not given permission when the Vue condominiums and offices were being planned, then the Vue could have been moved back off the main intersection, which would keep it from it being so overbearing to the eye.

Another Good: For more than 20 years, I and others have suggested that Sarasota should have its own Museum of Sarasota History. The city-owned, two-story building, formally known as the GWIZ building, located on the bayfront would be the perfect “good” for Sarasota, while fitting in

with the new bayfront development plans. The second story would meet all OSHA requirements for the storage of all historical resource papers and memorabilia, while the first floor would house all the historical furniture, etc. that the public should be able to see. Right now, the Sarasota County Historical Resource Department is located on Cattleman and Bahia Vista roads. Almost no one knows it is there. Money from historical grants and individuals, as well as corporate and business donations, are available. This was proved by the Historical Society of Sarasota County’s saving, moving and restoring the 1882 Bidwell-Wood House and the 1905 Crocker Church now located on 12th Street.

Lido should insure dredging results I found the Observer’s editorial on the Big Pass dredging project solution creative, but it fell short.

I’m all for a “free market” solution, but yours was not one. You are not passing any risk costs on to Lido property owners.

Let’s explore: The dredging project is not like the condo example you used where existing views will be blocked by new towers. Lido property owners do not own the sand used to benefit their beach.

The dredging project is not properly priced, because the sand and dredging costs are almost free to Lido residents, while the costs of any associated damages that may impact Siesta Beach are priced at zero.

In this case, there are possible unknown risks for Siesta and known benefits for Lido.

Of course, Lido is for “Big Government” subsidizing efforts to enhance their property values by adding sand

from Big Pass. This is government putting its thumb on the scale to benefit one party over another and bypassing normal market forces.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Lido property owners to purchase an insurance bond that would completely repair all direct and consequential damages to Siesta residents and business resulting from the dredging of Big Pass?

Presumably, a competitive insurance marketplace would price the risk involved, and then Lido property owners could determine if the riskadjusted costs this project carries are worth proceeding.

Note, in my proposal, Lido residents still get a great deal because they get the sand and the dredging work almost free. However, the costs of insurance may exceed costs of alternative sand sources, and, if so, then the market will direct Lido to obtain its sand elsewhere.

Now that’s the market functioning in an optimal manner.

Prepare for Lido beach refugees I commend your editorial “Siesta versus Lido” as a welcome antidote to the sky-isfalling fears of Save Our Sand 2 in their opposition to the project sponsored by the city of Sarasota and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

If Save Our Sand 2 is sincere in wanting to save Lido Beach without a speck of sand from Big Pass, it should be willing to sign on to your proposal: Pay for the difference in cost between taking sand from another source and the lessexpensive taking of some sand from Big Pass.

The Army Corps has shown it is cost-prohibitive to collect the same quality of sand from the gulf. A Big Pass subsidy might then make sand col-

lection from the gulf costeffective.

Every study of the issue has concluded that without renourishment, Lido Beach will disappear because of the southward flow of the gulf current. The “Our Sand” in “Save Our Sand 2” is basically Lido Beach sand.

Siesta Key Beach keeps growing at the expense of Lido Beach. For this reason, not all Siesta Key Beach residents are opposed to the plan. I hope that Siesta Key Beach residents are reasonable enough to consider your editorial proposal and not allow Big Pass opponents to speak for them.

Big Pass opponents muddy the waters by conjecturing potential problems to Big Pass without any proof. Willful ignorance of the facts that get in the way of our prejudices is not a sensible way to decide public policy questions.

The Big Pass opponents seem fixated on wasting whatever money they have on what promises to be a frivolous lawsuit. If that is the case, they should be prepared to pay possible attorneys’ fees to Sarasota and the Army Corps.

If the Army Corps does drop the project, then the 60%-plus renourishment expenses that would have been paid by the federal government will be lost.

When local taxes then skyrocket to renourish Lido Beach, local taxpayers can thank Save Our Sand 2 for the tax hike If, instead, Save Our Sand 2 prefers to let Lido Beach die, then those who live on or near Siesta Key Beach can thank the Big Pass opponents for the new hordes of beachgoers fleeing an extinct Lido Beach for Siesta Key Beach.

I guess Siesta Key Beach isn’t crowded enough. It will certainly need more hotels to accommodate the refugees from a defunct Lido Beach.

The city is having a difficult time finding a place to park the St. Armands Circle valet stand.

Through Tuesday, residents can offer their input on a proposal to relocate the valet service to Fillmore Drive from its previous location on the Circle. A new vendor, Hospitality Parking of America, is set to take over the complimentary service.

Already, the city is aware of concerns surrounding the new location. Mark Lyons, the city’s

parking manager, said two lines of criticism have arisen. Merchants near the proposed site are worried the valet stand will take up parking spaces in front of their stores.

Others believe the distance between the stand and the St. Armands Key Lutheran Church parking lot on Adams Drive, which the valet service uses, will lead to traffic congestion. Lyons suggested that argument might have some credence, but he will review the comments with city engineering staff before making any definitive statements.

from my viewpoint is that I don’t think the same volume of valet traffic will happen on Fillmore as it did on the Circle,” Lyons said.

Fillmore Drive was not the first choice for St. Armands leaders.

The valet stand will eventually relocate to a forthcoming parking garage on Adams Drive. Construction on that garage will eventually impede the ability to place the stand on Adams or Madison drives, so the St. Armands Business Improvement District ultimately landed on Fillmore as a stopgap solution.

Now that some controversy has arisen, those at Tuesday’s Business Improvement District meeting feared a lack of options.

“If there’s pushback on that, we have no place for the valet to be,” said Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association. “So we’ll have to go without a valet for two years.”

As city staff evaluates the proposed valet site, BID board members indicated a desire to find a solution for all parties involved.

Still, BID Chairman Gavin Meshad also advocated for a trial period to see whether the fears were valid.

“We can try it,” he said. “If it doesn’t work, if there are unforeseen problems, nothing’s set in stone, right?”

Lyons said the original scope of the garage project included public facilities inside the garage. Staff is working with a consultant on the design and pricing of freestanding restrooms, but Lyons cautioned the cost would exceed the original garage project estimates.

He said more information would be available within the next couple of months. Still, Corrigan pushed hard for the prioritization of the restroom project. For years, she said, St. Armands businesses have been subject to restroom questions from customers and noncustomers.

Both Corrigan and former BID Chairman Marty Rappaport said the restrooms were a necessary condition to get merchants to agree to the special assessment that will help fund the $17.5 million garage project.

“The reality of this situation is that our businesses have absorbed this 20-year tax,” Corrigan said.

“We need this ASAP.”

There are no specific public plans to build a hotel on Siesta Key, but residents of the Marina del Sol condominium on Old Stickney Point Road are convinced one is going to go in their backyard — and that it’s going to be big.

An effort to build a hotel on Siesta Key is shrouded in mystery.

They don’t know where it will be located. They don’t know how big it’s going to be. But a group of Siesta Key residents is rallying against a proposal to build a hotel on the island.

The change would only apply to three areas on the island: Siesta Key Village, the Wells Fargo property on Midnight Pass Road and 16 acres near Stickney Point Road.

Speculation on Siesta Key has also focused on the neighboring property at 1266 Old Stickney Point Road, which formerly housed the Fandango Night Club, as another possible hotel site.

Kroninger acknowledged most of the information about a potential hotel has come second-hand. Initially, the residents heard the project was supposed to be a smaller four-story boutique hotel. Now, they believe the property owner wants to build a 100-room hotel with a bar and restaurant.

“You hear all types of rumors,” Kroninger said.

The proposed comprehensive plan amendment is advancing through the county review process. After a public workshop in December — at which residents expressed concerns about the lack of details — the County Commis-

Opposition organizes against Siesta hotel plans

WHAT COULD CHANGE? The proposed comprehensive plan amendment would change a 1989 regulation that prohibits any density increase on Siesta Key. The change would only apply to transient housing — a hotel, in other words.

It would also only apply to properties zoned commercial general. That designation carries a density entitlement of 26 units per acre for hotels.

Land use attorney Charlie Bailey said property owner Gary Kompothecras would need a higher density to build a viable hotel on Siesta. As a result, the county is evaluating the merits of the privately initiated comprehensive plan change.

sion voted 3-1 Jan. 10 to direct staff to consider the proposal outside of the normal comprehensive plan amendment cycle, which usually begins in May. There are still several hurdles to clear for the developer. And Charlie Bailey, the land use attorney representing Kompothecras, said the scope and scale of a project has not been finalized — and that the hotel wouldn’t be larger than five stories.

But the lack of concrete details

is fueling fear on the island. The Marina del Sol residents said they have to stop the proposal now, before it’s too late. Kroninger isn’t sure how to kill the momentum of the hotel plans. He’s not sure if it’s even possible.

“Our real concern is they’re going to get this thing slid by without us having a lot of input,” he said. “We don’t know all the people they know. The Ask Garys of the world are wired into this stuff.”

Still, they’re preparing for a fight. They’re reaching out to the Siesta Key Association and other condos in an attempt to raise awareness. They’re in contact with Lourdes Ramirez, a resident activist who’s also organizing opposition to the comprehensive plan amendment.

Some island stakeholders, including Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith, have said it makes sense to make it easier to build a hotel

in a popular tourist destination. Bob Wachter, a former SKA chairman who lives near Marina del Sol, said the proposal could encourage redevelopment. Bailey has said any project would have to be evaluated on its own even if the comprehensive plan change is approved.

But Ramirez is convinced the opposition will continue to mount.

“Why should we open the door so the onus of fighting density increases is on the citizens, when right now, the law protects us from any density increases?” she asked.

“The idea of, ‘Let it pass, because then you can fight every request after that’ is insane.”

Despite a push to keep the Lido Beach pool and pavilion under public control, the commission wants a private operator.

Lido Key residents want the City Commission to keep the Lido Beach pool and pavilion public — and end its pursuit of a private operator to manage the facilities.

The commission instead voted Tuesday to continue negotiations with a private group on a contract to operate the city-owned property, but the board vowed maintaining public access would be a priority.

“This is going to remain public,” Commissioner Liz Alpert said. “We’re going to make sure this remains public.”

In late 2015, the city began negotiations with Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners LLC as it sought a private operator for the pavilion area. Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners consists of restaurant partnership SMG Holdings, which owns Daiquiri Deck, and developer JWM Management, the company behind the One Palm project in Sarasota.

Troy Syprett, a representative for Lido Beach Redevelopment Partners, said the plans were in line with the Lido Key Residents Association’s 2011 proposal to refurbish the pavilion. But Lido residents argued the city, now in a more stable financial position, could maintain control of the property while making upgrades.

In a 4-1 vote, the commission disagreed.

“We can’t keep putting BandAids on this,” Commissioner Suzanne Atwell said. “I like private money. We need private money.”

Commissioner Susan Chapman voted no.

“To me — and we’re going to face this again and again — the privatization of public space is just not the right way to go in these public-private partnerships,” Chapman said.

The City Commission still has to approve a contract once staff reaches an agreement with the operator, giving the public one more opportunity to comment.

After the meeting, Syprett said access to the pavilion would not be materially affected if his group assumes control of the property.

“Lido Beach has been an underutilized asset for the city,” he said.

“We want to return this facility to being a jewel of the city — for everyone in the city.”

WINDOW PAIN 5:30 p.m. — 700 block of Goodrich Avenue Property Damage: A woman discovered someone had broken the rear window of her car with a brick. The woman believed a tenant in the apartment complex where the car was parked broke the window, but she didn’t see him throw the brick. As an officer was speaking with the woman, another tenant confirmed the suspected tenant threw the brick.

An officer spoke to the tenant’s girlfriend, who reported her boyfriend saw a couple fighting behind the woman’s vehicle. He left the apartment to break up the fight, and he picked up a brick and threw it toward the arguing couple in an attempt to stop the argument. The brick unintentionally went through the window of the woman’s car, the girlfriend stated.

efore Hayley Walding walked onto Sarasota Military Academy’s campus, the school’s girls basketball program had won one game.

Ever.

She arrived in August 2014, three months after Coach Robert Beckmann did the same. He was ecstatic when Walding showed up for preseason conditioning.

Not just because he noticed her raw skills, though he did, but also because she was the seventh warm body to express interest in playing on his team. That first season, the team was relatively improved, winning four games.

Walding showed flashes of potential, but remained hidden in a shell off the court. At those preseason workouts, Walding didn’t say as much as “Hi” to Beckmann.

She came to SMA from Julie Rohr Academy, where her eighthgrade class consisted of six people. She was accustomed to small class sizes, and did not want to adjust to crowded classrooms.

Walding conceded she’s shy.

Instead of attending a large public school, she decided she wanted to go to SMA. Walding’s sophomore year started her transition from bashful newcomer to team leader.

She averaged 11 points per game, according to Beckmann, and met her best friend on the team, Ashley Strader, who was then a freshman.

Toward the end of the season, Beckmann pulled Walding aside for a private chat.

“He told me how much he likes me and how good I was,” Walding said. “He told me he wanted me to stay. I knew then that he saw me as a leader of the team.”

Heading into this season, Beckmann had to fill the point guard spot left by Brayden Einhaus, who graduated and is now playing at Warner University. She was the first SMA girls basketball player to earn a scholarship. Beckmann laid the challenge at the feet of his team: Someone had to walk in Einhaus’ shoes. Everyone was hesitant. Eventually, Walding broke the silence.

“Just give me the ball,” Walding told her teammates. They listened. She has been the point guard ever since, and has blossomed into an inside-out player.

her freshman year, but now has added a devastating ability to drive and get to the free throw line. Against IMG Academy on Jan. 17, Walding’s crossover made some Ascenders defenders look like bright orange practice cones.

Walding is now so respected as a leader that Beckmann lets her draw up plays on his clipboard during timeouts, provided the game is in hand. It’s something the San Antonio Spurs do with Tony Parker, Beckmann said, as do some high-level amateur programs. Walding thinks her teammates respect her because she is willing to be critical.

“Some people don’t want to hurt feelings,” Walding said. “I don’t care. I’ll tell people, even if they get mad. I’m trying to win the game.”

Walding is averaging about 16 points per game this season, according to Beckmann, and now has a chance to follow Einhaus’ lead in more ways than one.

Walding said that while she has not talked to many schools about scholarships yet, she, her family and Beckmann will soon sit down and put together highlight video packages to show schools.

aunt, recalled watching Walding, then in eighth grade at Julie Rohr Academy, perform in a production of “Bye, Bye Birdie.” Walding had told her family that she had a leading role, but as it turned out, she was the leading female in the play.

“She completely stole the show,” Bilbrey said. “She really nailed it, and I’m not just saying that. Her passion now is basketball, but back then I thought she was going to be in the theater.”

Despite her success on the stage, Walding’s burning passion remains basketball. On Dec. 5, Walding set the school girls basketball record, and tied the school’s overall record, for points in a game with 31 against the Academy of the Holy Names.

“Yeah, but we lost,” Walding said when reminded of the accomplishment.

Winning is something that weighs on Walding’s mind a lot.

She and the team have a goal of winning a playoff game. That would be quite the turnaround from four years ago. The Eagles’ record stands at 6-11 as of Jan. 17, not quite where Walding and the team want it to be. Taking McDonald’s All-American forward Rellah Boothe and IMG Academy to double-overtime proved that.

If Walding keeps up her scoring pace and can motivate her team to finish the year on a hot streak, who knows? Maybe her goal will be accomplished after all.

His Rising Stars team won the 2016 DICK’S Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions on Dec. 31 in Wesley Chapel. McMahon was named the championship game MVP, scoring three goals and adding two assists. .

When did you start playing lacrosse?

My dad (Dave McMahon) introduced me to the sport when I was in third grade. He knew I was going to be small, so he told me to try the sport out.

What do you think is your best lacrosse skill?

My head is always up, so I can find the teammate that is open.

I think that is why I had more assists than goals last year.

Definitely pasta and chicken.

They go well together. I usually eat a lot of carbs and then add some protein, especially before a game.

My favorite TV show is “The Office.” That’s a funny show.

I used to wear No. 22 because that is what my brother (Ryan McMahon) wore. One year, my dad said ‘Try to be No. 1 and just have the mentality that you’re No. 1 on the field.’

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Do you have a favorite lacrosse memory?

Winning the national tournament this year. We went to it last year, and I think we got to the final four before we lost. It was kind of a heartbreaker. We finally got to redeem ourselves, and it just felt good to finally win it.

Do you listen to music before games?

On the bus, if we’re traveling, I’ll listen to my own music, try to get my mind right, get focused for the game. It’s usually some rap or hip-hop, especially Drake. That’s my

According to USA Ultimate, the rules of the game are: 1. The field is a rectangle with end zones at each end.

Regulation size is 70 yards by 40 yards. Each team consists of seven players.

2. Each game starts with both teams lined up on their own end line. One team “kicks off” to the other, like in football.

3. Teams move up the field by completing passes to teammates. Players cannot run with the disc, and have 10 seconds to throw it, or else the other team gets possession.

4. When a pass is incomplete or caught by the defense, the defense takes possession.

5. If the offense completes a pass into the defense’s end zone, it receives one point.

6. Substitutions may take place after scoring plays or during injury timeouts.

7. No physical contact is allowed between players.

8. There are no referees.

Players are responsible for calling their own fouls.

9. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players and the basic joy of play.

The club officially meets at 7:30 a.m. once a week and lasts an hour, but Simonson opens up the field early for anyone who has an especially large Ultimate itch to scratch that week. I don’t know that I love anything in this world enough to get up that early for it every week, so kudos to these kids for committing to athletics.

at SMAP. He’s been playing Ultimate for three years, ever since the club started. When asked about his favorite Ultimate memory, he wasted little time blurting out his answer.

“Whenever we come out when it’s super cold,” he said. “We jump around and dive, just get soaking wet.”

How awesome is that? I’m not one to fall into the “get off my lawn” crowd often. I have an unhealthy addiction to Twitter, and I certainly watch my fair share of Netflix at night. In this case, though, I think my opinion is more in line with older generations: I love that kids today are still enthralled by simply running around, acting like fools and getting wonderfully messy, as opposed to wasting that time on video games and the like. Live while you’re young and still have the time to partake in sports on a regular basis.

Aetonu was a prime example of the kind of self-confidence that the Ultimate club preaches.

After an extra-long “kickoff,” Aetonu couldn’t believe what he just did.

n a misty morning, at the crack of dawn, 15 kids gather on the Sarasota Military Academy Prep athletic fields for an ultimate showdown.

Well, rather, an Ultimate showdown.

Welcome to SMAP’s Ultimate Frisbee club (the cool kids just call it Ultimate). It’s run by Capt.

Ryan Simonson, who himself played in college at the U.S. Military Academy. He started the club to give kids something to do other than sit around and be lazy. Simonson said he has found that kids do better in school when they burn all their excess energy before it starts. It allows them to focus that remaining energy on their work.

The club is also designed to be a confidence boost. The club’s motto is Fortuna Favet Fortibus, or “Fortune favors the bold.”

Middle school is a tough age range, Simonson said. Kids don’t really know who they are, or who they want to be. His advice to his club is to “just be,” whatever that might entail. Kids of all ages, sizes and personalities are welcome.

It is an official club, by the way. Simonson had it sanctioned

by USA Ultimate. They have tried to schedule games against other schools, but SMA is a pioneer in the “middle school Ultimate club” game. Most of the schools that offer Ultimate are high schools, and Simonson does not want to have his

s a new presidential administration prepares its list of objectives, the second-graders in Carol West’s class at Southside Elementary are identifying goals of their own.

Some will be busy starting their career at Publix, if they can keep their hands off the cookies. Others, meanwhile, will continue their quest to collect every flavor of Tic Tac. And while none of them know what the future holds, we’re pretty sure it won’t include candy falling from the sky (sorry, Noah).

CIRCLE OF LIFE For Brooks Tracey, coming home means giving back.

For Brooks Tracey, what goes around comes around.

Thirteen years ago, Tracey sat in room 411 at Sarasota Middle School, hunched over a table working on a project for his art teacher, Elaine Gale.

Now retired, Gale remembers Tracey’s drive. He took his work seriously no matter the project, and this project was no different.

It was for an art program called Coexistence, which encouraged students and professional artists to explore diversity through art.

“I focused on making all my students aware of the destructive power of prejudice and intoler-

ance on humanity,” Gale said. “I tried to teach my students the fragility of life and how it can be destroyed with hatred.”

The program selects submissions that appear in its annual art show at Bayfront Park.

At the time Tracey participating in the program, Gale was also teaching her students about one of the most powerful examples of hate — the Holocaust.

Tracey’s piece depicted a person crying, a number tattooed on their arm.

Although Gale remembers the power of his piece, Tracey said he didn’t reflect on the impact of the project until much later.

ing and challenging. Others are funny and cute.

Sarasota Middle School seventh grader Taylor Johnson’s piece depicts a series of seals all balancing balls except one except one that is balancing a pineapple.

“That’s one of the really interesting parts of the project. They’re really open to just trying things,” Tracey said.

For Tracey, the power of the project is how the pieces confront issues of diversity. His students are sixth, seventh and eighth graders learning to become young adults and express themselves in the midst of transition. But their work is a testament to the power of the artistic medium.

“I would say that artwork is a strong way to start conversations when it comes to change,” Tracey said.

Two students from Tracey’s class had works selected for previous showcases. And in 2015, Tracey’s own piece was selected.

“It’s a huge honor, but it’s got the backseat to when I get a student’s work in,” Tracey said.

To Gale, Tracey’s continued participation in the program is proof of the enduring power of the program’s message.

“The whole fact that we need to come together, that we need to conquer hatred and prejudice — and unfortunately it’s still going on — the message is multigenerational,” Gale said. “Hopefully we will be able to reach a lot of people through EOC. I think it’s needed more now … It has to continue.”

Embracing Our Differences, continues to empower young artists to discuss diversity. The scope of the program has expanded.

Since 2004, more than 235,000 students have participated. It’s grown from a statewide art program and show to an international showcase. Last year’s Embracing Our Differences show included selections from 106 local schools and schools around the world.

As for Tracey, he’s back in room 411 at Sarasota Middle School.

Gale retired in June 2016, and she’s passed her baton to Tracey.

“I’m always thinking to myself how lucky I am,” Tracey said.

“When I’m going to staff meetings and I’m sitting there, people who are once my teachers and mentors are now my colleagues.

I’m really honored to come back to this school.”

And now, he’s administering the Embracing Our Differences program as a teacher.

“When I started teaching the lesson myself, I really started to reflect on my experience with it when I was doing it as a student,” Tracey said “It was even more powerful looking back on it now.”

His students spend three to four weeks on the project, discussing their composition and message.

“We give each other a lot of tips on what we want to draw,” Sarasota Middle School student Lauren Solomon said. “They show us how we can show without words what we want to say.”

emple Emanu-El paid tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 15 in the best way its members knew how — bringing together the community.

The interfaith tribute featured the Key Chorale and the Rev. Charles McKenzie, who recited some of King’s famous speeches.

Program chairman Donald Malawsky said the temple does this event because the Jewish community and African-Americans community have a special relationship forged in the turmoil each faced in the past.

The event benefited Visible Men Academy, a public charter school for boys in Bradenton.

Before the walk began, Helen James, event organizer and member of Suncoast Women of Action, told the crowd it was a happy and glorious day.

“We’re going to make a difference in 2017,” she said to the crowd.

The day started with a breakfast and continued with the walk and celebration and a basketball game at Booker High School. James said this event is important because people need to know about their leaders.

“It’s our history,” she said. “It’s our legacy. It’s our democracy.”

orth Osprey Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way had some extra traffic on Jan. 16.

In honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, residents and visitors of Sarasota walked from the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

The 1.2-mile walk might not have been long, but it was powerful. Some people held signs, some cheered and some sang along to music.

People of all ages gathered for the walk that ended with an afternoon of performances, activities and celebration at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

rom pastrami to kugel, the ninth annual Jewish Food Festival had it all.

The Jan. 15 event brought thousands of people to Temple Sinai. Attendees dined on traditional Jewish dishes, such as brisket, falafel and corned beef, all prepared by temple members. Rabbi Michael Churgel said the cooking for the event begins months in advance.

The event is run by volunteers of the temple. Temple Sinai chazzan Cliff Abramson said that throughout his time at the temple, he has seen some kids grow up and become the adults running the show. For Abramson and Churgel, the food fest is an opportunity for them to mingle with members and friends of the temple and of course, enjoy traditional bites.

“Who doesn’t like food? So, people are happy,” Churgel said.

enney DeCamp likes to call the Looking into the Crystal Ball fundraiser the people’s gala.

At $25, the event is less expensive than some of Sarasota’s other fundraisers, and that’s just how DeCamp likes it.

“They cost so much. It has a limited amount of individuals to go to it,” DeCamp said.

But DeCamp said the Looking into the Crystal Ball fundraiser is different. He calls the dress code “gypsy casual” and lined up a diverse group of performers from opera singers to fire dancers.

Attendees of the event Jan. 11 at Selby Public Library watched performers from the mezzanine. The event included local food and craft vendors. Magicians performed on the second floor while intuitives delivered individual readings near the main stage.

singer Yetta Hansell, was also a first-time attendee of the fundraiser. Before her performance, she took a walk around the mezzanine, catching glimpses of other performers while perusing booths from local vendors.

“It’s so artsy. It’s so cultural,” Hansell said. “This has something for everybody.”

The many faces of Lee Peterson

Last week, the light went out.

The mental health advocate and ardent supporter of the arts, Lee Peterson, 90, died on Jan. 11.

Peterson moved to Sarasota in the early 1990s with her husband, Robert Peterson. The pair became champions of mental health in Sarasota, helping create a Florida branch of the National Alliance of Research in Schizophrenia and Depression.

Later, the chapter became the nonprofit Sunshine from Darkness, associated with the International Mental Health Research Organization.

“The two of them were a team when they moved to Sarasota,” their daughter Janice Radder remembered in an interview.

They were different, but the same. Robert Peterson was calculated. Lee Peterson was dramatic.

Both were abundantly altruistic and unwavering in their love for

each other.

“They were a true love affair,” longtime friend Flori Roberts said.

Peterson was born in Manhattan in 1926. The daughter of Italian immigrants, she came from humble beginnings.

Sarasota will remember her as a poised, attentive and gracious hostess — traits she nurtured while working in her parents’ restaurant on Second Avenue. She cooked, cleaned, tended bar and even sang.

“She and her father would sing in the kitchen and all the customers would listen,” Radder said.

“They realized she had a huge talent.”

She went on to sing on Broadway, dazzling audiences with her talent and her beauty.

“Everybody said she looked like Elizabeth Taylor,” Radder said.

Peterson met her husband in 1953. They married a year later and had three children, Jeffrey, Janice and David.

She was compassionate, denying herself her musical ambitions to rear her children — a testament to her selflessness.

“She wanted to do things for people. If you went to her house, she was cooking for you. She was taking my friends shopping. She would have all the boys and all the

She was a wife, a mother, a philanthropist, an active supporter of the arts and a trailblazer in her own right.

In the 1990s and early 2000s,

few people were fighting to dismantle the stigma of mental illness. The subject remained taboo in proper circles, but Peterson and her husband were undaunted. She approached the challenge like she approached life — with passion.

“She had wonderful, elegant, gorgeous dinners and had the symposiums the next day with the best scientists they could fine,” Roberts said. “She made (mental illness) fashionable, which was kind of a miracle.”

She spent more than two decades advocating for mental illness and the arts in Sarasota and raised $5 million for the cause.

“She was interested in you. She knew you from the minute she looked at you,” Radder said. “She wanted to know all about you. She had a love of people and a love of life.”

Peterson and her husband were also dogged patrons of the arts.

The Peterson Great Room in the Sarasota Opera is named for the couple. Asolo Theater Producing Artistic Director Michael Edwards said they never missed an opening night.

In many ways, she personified the best of Sarasota. She was elegant, benevolent and genuine.

But for all her virtues, her indomitable passion burns brightest.

After 90 years, Peterson’s legacy is punctuated by the very thing she gave so freely.

“She was very loved right to the end,” Radder said.

She is survived by her three children, Jeffrey Peterson, Janice Radder and David Peterson, and three grandchildren.

The family held a private memorial service on Jan 15.

t was Melissa Precourt’s first year organizing the annual Father-Daughter Dance for St. Mary’s Academy and St. Martha’s Catholic School. When it came time to pick a theme, just one thing occurred to her — hats.

“I just thought of the idea of dads and their little girls together, and I thought bow ties and big hats,” Precourt said. “I thought that would be adorable.”

Just as Precourt envisioned, hats were the accessory of choice for attendees of the Kentucky Derby-themed dance Jan. 13 at St. Martha’s Catholic School.

After walking the red carpet, fathers and daughters walked under a series of large, floral horseshoes. The event also featured facepainting and a photo booth. Paper horses and flags decorated the tables.

“We can take a little more pride in it because we made it,” Precourt said of the decorations.

Sarasota YMCA hosts annual Ringling Bridge Run

T

he Ringling Bridge Run is a tradition as old as the span itself. Not long after the high-rise causeway was completed in 2003, thousands of runners made their way across.

And on the morning of Jan. 14, about 1,800 competitors did it again after first gathering at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The 4-mile race is now in its 14th year. Race Director Rhonda Kapusta said her favorite part of the race is the community’s energy throughout the event.

“It’s really had a connection to the community,” Kapusta said.
