+ The Meadows raises funds The women of The Meadows Country Club’s golf, tennis and fitness communities recently raised nearly $11,000 to assist uninsured and underinsured patients at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Breast Health Center. The money was raised as part of their Think Pink Week in February, and events included tennis and golf tournaments, luncheons, fashion shows, drawings, silent auctions and a fitness walk.

A Citizens Advisory Panel, of 10 city residents, formed to share their thoughts on a job description brochure for a new city manager, met last week with the search consultant. Search consultant Colin Baenziger, of Wellington-based Colin Baenziger & Associates,

and city human resources Director Kurt Hoverter, met with eight of the 10 committee members who provided feedback on the advertisement brochure being crafted to solicit top talent. Meeting minutes reveal that Baenziger has met individually with each city commissioner,

using those meetings to craft a rough draft of an employment profile brochure that will be utilized in a city manager search that could take 90 days to six months to complete. Baenziger received feedback about the profile, which advisory panel members sought to

+ Bikers raise funds for guide dogs The Knights of the Eagle chapter of the International Widows Sons Masonic Riders motorcycle group recently raised $7,500 for the Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Paws for Patriots program by selling raffle tickets for a customized golf cart. “This generous gift will help us to continue our mission of providing world-class guide dogs and service dogs for those who can benefit from them,” said Andy Kramer, director of development for Southeastern Guide Dogs. “It costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $60,000 to create and support a guide dog team, so donations like this allow us to continue to provide our services free of charge.”

NOT A SURE BET By Kurt Schultheis | City Editor

Casino gambling change not recommended The Sarasota Planning Board does not recommend a zoning change and Comprehensive Plan amendment that would allow a casino be placed on The Sarasota Kennel Club site. The city’s Planning Board doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to roll the dice and bet that a future casino could be earmarked for Sarasota until the Legislature actually approves casinos statewide.

Last week, the planning board chose not to recommend plans to designate The Sarasota Kennel Club as the only potential site for a future casino. Director of Neighborhood and

Development Services David Smith told the board at its March 14 regular meeting the city was following the Sarasota City Commission’s direction by telling the gambling industry where a large-

scale casino in the city could be placed if one were proposed. “We’re following proper growth
