A

s humans, we can get pretty caught up on sentimental things like legacy. Partly because I think we all like the idea of leaving something behind that people remember — of leaving our mark that we were here.

But another reason legacies are important is because they are rare. To build something over a lifetime and then have it continue, that’s a big challenge. And a special thing.

Now, in this particular case, let’s add to the challenge that this is a business legacy we’re talking about, and not just any business, but a restaurant. And it’s being taken over by a nonemployee and a nonfamily member? Fuhgettaboutit.

That makes the latest iteration of the iconic Euphemia Haye restaurant’s legacy a unicorn.

When D’Arcy and Ray Arpke, who ran the Longboat restaurant for more than 40 years, wanted to retire, at first they tried passing it to an employee. When that plan misfired, the Arpkes found Jason and Rachel Ghormley, a husband and wife with some roots in the area and fond memories of the restaurant. It didn’t hurt that they had sold a profitable business and had some investment money to spare.

But that a good restaurateur does not make. I have to admit, when we initially heard that some folks from St. Petersburg were purchasing the establishment in what seemed like a side project, I may have raised my eyebrows. Restaurants are notorious for chewing up owners who don’t understand the demands required of this uber-competitive and razor-

thin-margined space.

Upon reading Departments Editor Mark Gordon’s piece on Page 68, my skepticism has turned to admiration. For one, they are not fly-bynight investors unfamiliar with the restaurant, or the industry. Euphemia Haye was the place where Rachel’s family, who owned a restaurant in Bradenton, would go to celebrate important milestones — the hallmark of any fine-dining establishment.

And, not only have Rachel and Jason Ghormley invested heavily in the restaurant financially, but it seems they are giving it what it requires: the attention and the personal touch that has always made it special. When our writer went to interview the Ghormleys, Rachel was working in the front of the house, while Jason was working in the bar area.

Rachel told us she’s surprised when people seek her out to thank her, but this makes perfect sense for anyone familiar with the Longboat community. She and her husband are not just stewards of a favorite dining place; they are stewards of a 50-year Longboat legacy.

After reading their story, I hope you’ll have the same sentiment I did: We’re all rooting for you.

But here’s what goes into those ‘best beach’ rankings — and why they matter.

ack in 2011, Siesta Beach was named the No. 1 beach in America by Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach.” The professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University has been reviewing and evaluating the country’s 650 public beaches for more than three decades, using 50 different criteria like sand softness and beach shape to come up with his annual winners.

Local residents already knew Siesta Beach was a winner.

But Dr. Beach’s ranking helped tell

the world about its attributes.

“The sand is like sugar,” Leatherman said in a May 27, 2011 story on CBS News’ website. “Some people can’t believe it. You have to bring sunglasses because it’s so bright. It’s super soft, super fine. They claim to have the finest, whitest sand in the world, and I can’t argue with that.”

Siesta Beach was No. 3 in 2008 and a runner-up in 2009 and 2010 before claiming the top spot. That caused CBS news to write “after years as a Continued on Page 30

over the years, sponsoring the Siesta Key and Lido Key pages. “By doing those, you’re certainly not buying editorial coverage,” she says. “But you are planting seeds for their editorial staff to investigate.”

When visits by journalists and experts like Leatherman lead to accolades like the best beach rankings, it helps introduce Siesta Key and the rest of Sarasota County to potential visitors nationwide and worldwide. “I think sometimes we as residents, as the people who live here and are super proud of the fact that we live here, forget that not everybody knows where Sarasota, Florida, is and that Siesta Key is a part of Sarasota, Florida,” says Duggan.

That theory holds true for entrepreneurs in the tourism industry who rely on people coming to Sarasota, and Siesta.

“It surprises me that we still to this day get first-time visitors; I just think everybody in the world has heard about the place,” says Captain Mike Nix, co-owner of Key Life Charters.

“Sometimes people mention the rankings. They mention the fact they have heard so much about [Siesta Key] online and that kind of piqued their curiosity … It is having an impact, for sure.”

Then, in 2017, Dr. Beach named it the No.1 beach in America again, praising its white 100% quartz-crystal sand, clear warm waters and crescent shape. Siesta Beach has also gotten numerous accolades from Tripadvisor over the past 10 years, most recently being named the No. 1 best beach in the U.S. and the No. 4 beach in the world by the 2025 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards.

Erin Duggan, president and CEO of Visit Sarasota County, knows these kinds of accolades don’t just magically happen. “We’re incredibly lucky at Visit Sarasota County that we are selling Sarasota County, an amazingly beautiful place to sell,” she says. “But it doesn’t necessarily just sell itself. We always say if you build it, they do not come. You have to promote it.”

She sees the beach rankings as part of the visitor bureau’s public relations and earned media efforts. “We are perpetually pitching the media, telling them the good stories of the community, the things that they’ll write positive stories about,” says Duggan. “A lot of the accolades we receive stem from EARN IT But Duggan knows rankings like this our PR program through the years.” are just one part of the work that goes TOP OF MIND into drawing visitors to Sarasota CounVisit Sarasota County has also made ty. accolades alone aren’t enough. “That full-page print ad or that billboard you drive by plants the seeds, but it doesn’t necessarily make you click on a button and book,” she says.

Those “best of” beach rankings also come with some pressure to remain at the top of your game once you’ve made the list. And there are sometimes factors out of a destination’s hands, like if decisions are made to not repeat past winners on a “best of” list.

“We absolutely take it seriously, but I think we understand that sometimes there are things out of our control,” says Duggan. “But that’s the beauty of earned media and things like influencers — we don’t leave any stone unturned, and we look for the best lists to try to get on.”

For Michael Holderness, who owns Beachside Management, Siesta Key Beachside Villas and Siesta Key Beach Resort & Suites, Siesta Beach’s accolades assist in keeping the barrier island a special place. “It helps us maintain what we have,” he says.

And the fact that Siesta Beach was named best beach in the U.S. by the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2025 is definitely helpful to an area that got hit hard during the 2024 hurricane season. “You got the hurricanes last year that painted one image, and you need that positive aspect to offset that,” says Nix. “It’s even more messaging that the beach is fine and places are available and life is back to normal.”

The new Longboat Police Chief takes pride in never accepting the status quo, seeking to always ‘make things at least a little bit better.’

A

s a kid growing up in Pompano Beach, Russ Mager had exactly zero interest in being a cop. After graduating from Florida State University with a major in psychology and minor in criminology, he had zero interest in joining a police force. In fact, Mager didn’t start his law enforcement career until age 30, after having spent several years in hotel management.

And yet here he is, the new police chief of Longboat Key, fresh from a three-year stint as top cop of the Delray Beach Police Department, where he spent 29 years, beginning as a patrol officer. “Most chiefs of police have always wanted to be a cop, always had aspirations, always wanted to move up the food chain,” Mager, 59, says. “I’m kind of funny in that I got a late start.”

In his late 20s, Mager had grown weary of being transferred from hotel to hotel, worrying about his job status as major chains gobbled up each other.

He accepted an offer from a friend to share an apartment in Boca Raton.

That friend was a cop, who pressed his housemate into doing a ride-along.

Afterward, Mager was intrigued.

He applied on a lark, passed all the stringent screening, and got hired

by Delray Beach. Mager underwent a year of arduous training, some of which raised further doubts. “The police academy was very paramilitary,” he recalls. “I’m 30 years old and these guys are screaming and yelling at me.

I was like, ‘What did I sign up for?’” After another five months of by-the-book field training, Mager was handed the keys to a patrol car. “I was able to start making [the job] my own and enjoying Photos by Lori Sax

HOT TOPICS Continued from Page 32 it,” he says. “I felt like I could have a positive influence, treat people well, arrest people if I had to, but do it with dignity and respect. It was a powerful position to have, and I felt I was able to use it for the greater good.”

He rose steadily through the ranks — sergeant to lieutenant to captain to assistant chief to chief. Alas, the Delray Beach PD does not have the rank of major, depriving him of serving as Major Mager. At every rung on the ladder, he “never accepted the status quo,” he says. “I worked to make things at least a little bit better.”

OBSERVE AND PROTECT

Longboat’s new chief left an agency with 175 sworn officers and 60 nonpolice personnel and joined one with 19 sworn officers and three supplemental staffers — in a town with a median age of 71.5, a median property value of about a million bucks, an extremely low crime rate, and effectively no violent crime.

During a late-August interview, Mager had been at his job for all of four weeks. He was still getting adjusted, gathering a feel for his department before considering changes. “It’s easy to come in, start flexing and saying, ‘I’m chief and I come from his big organization and we’re gonna flip this place upside down,’” he says. “But that’s not my style, and candidly, I’m in the observation phase.”

Major believes in community policing, which means getting to know residents, developing relationships, working to be a positive force in the community and striving to be viewed positively by residents. That’s in contrast to traditional policing, where officers essentially respond to calls.

From that first stint as a patrol cop in Delray Beach’s tougher neighborhoods — where all rookies started — he worked to establish connections with residents, many of whom were minorities and wary of the police. “It was hard at first, but I just got out of my car a lot and walked, threw a football or shot some baskets with kids,” he says.

Probably his best gambit involved donuts. “After briefing, I’d go to Dunkin

Donuts, buy two dozen, park where I’d see kids and throw the box on the trunk of my patrol car,” he says (and yes, he gets the irony). “What kid doesn’t like donuts? Soon enough they’d start coming over and eating them. When you could get to the young kids, you could get to the families.”

VALUE ADD

While crime may not be much of an issue on Longboat Key, policing involves a lot more than that. Mager’s team deals with parking issues, traffic management in a community with a robust tourist season, quality-of-life issues such as loud music, boating problems, dogs on the beach, kids congregating on sandbars and poppin’ beers. And then there’s the threat of hurricanes. If one hits, it can tax a small police department past its limits.

As far as true crime, Mager says the biggest issue is fraud, mostly against the elderly, often perpetrated from well outside city limits. “There’s an

education component,” he says, “getting out to the HOAs and communities and really trying to help people be aware of what these scams look like.”

Mager lives near downtown Sarasota, about seven miles from his office. His wife, Beth, recently retired as a sergeant with the Coral Gables police department. She has family here, so the move from Delray to Longboat was planned before the job opening came to Mager’s attention. The Magers have two kids living with them and one back on the east coast.

The new chief appreciates the family-oriented culture of his force, made possible by its relative smallness. “I’d sort of been-there-done-that with the bigger organization,” he says. “It’s like being a CEO of a business — a business that just so happens to be called police.

Here, I was handed something with a good playbook, good people, a good system. I just want to make it better and have the agency be of real value to the community.”

A once-quiet stretch on normally quiet Casey Key is bustling with the early stages of a $44 million road repair project.

hat was once a secluded, private-feeling stretch of North Casey Key Road is now punctuated by three Cs: a crane, cones and “caution: construction zone” signs.

The work is part of a more than $40 million project Sarasota County authorized this spring to repair a 0.53-mile

stretch of North Casey Key Road damaged during the 2024 hurricane season. Officials expect the project to be complete in March 2027.

In some ways, the work is a sign of the times: From north Longboat to Venice Beach, pockets of road work, landscaping and more dot the landscape, a symbol of hurricane and storm recovery. Casey Key is in the middle of all that action.

There are two major issues the project aims to address on North Casey Key Road, north of Blackburn Point Road: voids undermine the existing

road, for one, and also the current barrier is damaged and does not provide sufficient erosion protection for the road, which runs along the Gulf.

Over the next two years, a new stretch of North Casey Key Road will be installed and so will a permanent seawall that will provide protection against future storm events. During the course of construction, a temporary road detour will be installed along the shoreline, which will be removed when the work is complete.

Miami-based highway and bridge construction company The de Moya Group signed a $44.59 million contract this spring to make permanent repairs to the shoreline and roadway on Casey Key. The company had also made about $6 million in emergency repairs to Casey Key Road in September 2024 following hurricanes Debby and Helene.

Within the scope of the latest project are two sections of North Casey Key Road: the north segment is 0.38 miles between 846 and 526 North Casey Key Road, while the south segment is 0.15 miles from 332 to 230 North Casey Key Road.

Staging, mobilization and materials purchasing for the project began in late April and early May, according to Sarasota County officials.

To make way for the necessary equipment, part of the Nokomis Beach parking lot near the playground was closed at the end of April. Now a barge and heavy machinery are stationed there. A smaller staging area is also located at Blackburn Point Park.

The de Moya Group, a Miami construction firm, is the lead contractor for the work to repair North Casey Key Road.

PHASED PROJECT

PARKING PROBLEMS

The activity has caused various disruptions in and around Casey Key. With a section of the Nokomis Beach parking lot closed for equipment staging, for example, beachgoers have in some cases sought out spots across the bridge on Albee Road — to the dismay of one local business owner.

“The work across the way has caused issues for us in so many ways,” says Tommy Adorna, owner of Pelican Alley restaurant. For one, it is costing him financially. “Beach patrons continuously try to park in my parking lot, and my customers have no overflow parking. My employees have no parking.”

One of the draws of Pelican Alley is its waterfront location. According to Adorna, the views have been compromised due to the equipment for the Casey Key Road project. “As you can see, the park has become a giant eyesore,” Adorna says. “We lived through two major hurricanes only for the county to hit us when we are down.”

To reconstruct North Casey Key Road, which also was damaged in the hurricanes, there will be three phases of construction, according to county officials.

In the first phase — happening now — a new seawall is being constructed.

Traffic is reduced to a single lane on the existing road around the work, which is mainly taking place between the road and the shore. A temporary bulkhead and temporary fill are also being installed.

In the second phase, a temporary road will be built so crews can make repairs to North Casey Key Road. A date has not been set yet for when the second phase will begin, Sarasota County transportation and capital projects officials say. Work on phase two, officials add, “will begin once all necessary permits for the permanent work have been acquired by the design-build team.”

During the final phase of construction, the temporary road and bulkhead will be removed, replaced with a stone riprap barrier, which is used to protect shorelines against water erosion.

SPLIT PAYMENT Due to the nature of the project, the majority of the cost of repairing North Casey Key Road is expected to be covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to a presentation Sarasota County officials gave this spring to county commissioners.

Funding for the project will come from three sources, county officials say: FEMA, Sarasota County and the state of Florida.

FEMA is expected to fund 75%, with Sarasota and the state each covering 12.5% of the cost.

Officials with Sarasota County say as of Sept. 10 that they had not yet determined which funding source they planned to use to pay for the project.

Wilma Davidson Writer, educator, pilot and lifelong learner, Wilma Davidson has built a career — and a life — defined by curiosity, achievement and purpose.

ilma Davidson has authored three books on business writing, published a slew of articles on various topics and runs her own consulting firm that has taken her all over the world to coach writers.

She was an instructor of professional and technical communication at USF Sarasota-Manatee for 10 years. She’s the current president of the Sarasota branch of the National League of American Pen Women. And yet this resident of Longboat Key does not consider herself a natural.

“I’ve always thought of myself as a writer with a little ‘w,’ she says. “For me, writing is not as fluid as it is for some others.”

To which, one might respond: “OK then, let’s consider the results.” They look pretty good.

Davidson, 82, also happens to be a licensed pilot, although she and her husband, Steve, sold their beloved Cessna 210 two years ago. She clipped her own wings, no longer taking to the sky.

She grew up a high achiever in Wilma Bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Besides scoring top grades, Davidson was a member of the Math Club, Latin Club, Honor Society and the school chorus. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Connecticut, a master’s in English education from the State University of New York at New Paltz and a doctorate in education from Rutgers University.

Davidson married Steve, her high school sweetheart, in 1961. She taught high school English for 13 years. In 1982, she caught the entrepreneurial Continued on Page 44

The Davidsons have lived full-time on Longboat Key for 20 years. They have two grown children — a son, Eric, and a daughter, Lisa — both of whom live out of state, plus four grandchildren. Wilma recently collaborated on a children’s book, “Supercat Splat Splat,” with the artist Diana DeAvila.

It’s the first in a planned trilogy.

n a Wednesday afternoon in early September, a group of about 10 people gathered in a

side room at the Gecko’s Grill & Pub on Clark Road in Sarasota.

It was a mostly older group — one of those in the crowd was marking her 90th birthday. But there were a couple of young people mixed in as well.

The group talked strategy, collected money, sang Happy Birthday, ate lunch and planned for the rest of the year.

And for what they lacked in size, they made up for in impact.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Continued from Page 48 The meeting was one of two monthly gatherings of the Siesta Key Kiwanis Club. (Or if you prefer to refer to it by what their nametags say: It was one of two monthly gatherings of the “Mighty” Siesta Key Kiwanis Club.)

“Our mission is one child, one community at a time,” says Mary-Lynn Desjarlais, a Sarasota attorney and the Siesta Key club’s incoming president.

“So, if we can change the life of one child, we have done our job.”

SOUTH BOUND The local service club carries the Siesta Key name, though its work is not limited by geography, with its giving spread out across the area.

One reason for that is its origins.

Desjarlais says about 10 years ago there were two local clubs, the Kiwanis Club of South Sarasota and the Kiwanis Club of Siesta Key. She belonged to the South Sarasota club, where half its members were older than 90. The members saw the direction the club was headed and formed a committee to discuss a merger.

After they “dated for a year” the combined clubs settled on the Siesta Key name because it had better name recognition outside Sarasota County.

Today, the Siesta Key club has 31 members who each pay about $185 in dues a year. That money pays for a website, the room fee at Gecko’s, mailings and dues to the international Kiwanis organization. The members also donate time and money for the causes the group supports and its events.

The club’s key mission is literacy, and at that Wednesday afternoon meeting there was a lot of talk about My Little Libraries and book drives for two local schools — Wilkinson Elementary and Brentwood Elementary in Sarasota County — the club has “adopted” and a preschool program.

The club’s signature project, according to a strategy document for 2025’26 is Read, Learn, Dream Sarasota.

The program is a free pre-K kids book group that, with the help of parents, is designed to promote a love of books and reading among children.

The project was started in 2022 with 98 children in six classrooms at three schools. Today, RLDS provides books

to 217 children and 17 teachers in 17 classrooms at seven schools.

By the end of this school year, it will have placed over 5,700 books into preK children’s homes, the Siesta Key club says in the program description.

The cost is $70 per child per school year. But parents and schools pay nothing. The club raises money to cover the costs through a sponsorship program, other fundraising and grants.

This initiative, Desjarlais writes in a follow up email, helps preschoolers to “build home libraries and foster a lifelong love of reading.”

FILL THE GAP But the club’s activities aren’t limited to just literacy programs.

As lunch was served at the meeting, a representative from Meals on Wheels of Sarasota gave a presentation of how the program works, whom it helps and how club members can help.

There were discussions about a breakfast with Santa and a holiday gift giving program for elementary school students. The club also collects and donates food so families can have a Thanksgiving meal.

There was even talk at the meeting about getting together for a holiday party. But that won’t happen until January because everyone is so tied up with other club-related projects.

Chief among those projects is the holiday gift giving program — Holiday Heroes.

The club sponsors about 80 children, Desjarlais says, and members have a $40 per child price limit.

Who is getting the gifts remains anonymous. What the club tries to do is make sure everyone in the family gets a gift on Christmas morning.

These families, often identified by school counselors, fill out a questionnaire sharing what they’d like, if the gift is for a girl or a boy, what sizes they are, that sort of thing.

Several club members during the discussion said the sad reality is how many kids ask for food.

While other kids have limitless dreams of what Santa can stuff under a crowded tree, a lot of the kids the Siesta Key Kiwanis help ask for something like Takis, a simple and popular spicy tortilla chips snack.

It breaks your heart, the members say, but this may be their only chance to get something others grab off a store shelf without a second thought.

“There’s such a need,” Desjarlais says in an area that many people see as affluent. “If you look at the Title 1 elementary schools, these are children who are on free and reduced lunch. In wealthy Sarasota, it’s amazing how many children live at or below the poverty line.”

he fortunes of one the most famous restaurants on Longboat Key turned on a text.

That text buzzed into Jason Ghormley’s phone one night in late April. The note,

from a friend, delivered sad news: Euphemia Haye, the landmark Longboat Key restaurant Ghormley and his wife, Rachel, had frequented for years, was closing. Jason turned to Rachel upon hearing the news, she says, with a question: Do you want to buy it?

Continued from Page 68 As the Ghormleys pondered the purchase, the longtime co-owner of Euphemia Haye, Ray Arpke, was also busy on the phone. Arpke says his phone was “ringing off the hook,” in late April and early May, as he fielded more than 15 phone calls from potential buyers of the shuttered eatery.

Arpke and his wife, D’Arcy Arpke, owned Euphemia Haye from 1980 to 2021. They transitioned ownership of the restaurant — but not the building — to their assistant and longtime bookkeeper, Amy Whitt, just before Christmas in 2021.

Less than four years later, this past April 30, Euphemia Haye closed. No goodbye party, only a sign on the door that stated, “We are closed this evening. We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you.” (Whitt did not return calls for comment for this story; she didn’t return several calls for comment in previous Observer Media Group stories on Euphemia Haye.)

One of the calls Ray Arpke received in early May was from Jason Ghorm-

ley, who had been in the plumbing and lighting supply business for some two decades. He co-founded St. Petersburg-based Hydrologic Distribution Co., which had grown to 12 locations across Florida and $250 million in annual revenue through 2022. Dayton, Ohio-based Winsupply acquired Hydrologic in October that year, according to several industry publications, for an undisclosed sum.

While many of the people calling Arpke about Euphemia Haye were fans, few had the ties to the restaurant Rachel Ghormley had. She grew up on Longboat and Bradenton, and attended Anna Maria Elementary school. Her parents, who were in the food and restaurant business in the area, held their wedding reception there in 1982, and, in a full-circle moment, the Arpkes babysat for her when she was a young girl. In another full-circle moment, Rachel Ghormley’s family held their last Thanksgiving dinner together at Euphemia Haye in 2017 — 11 months before her dad, Stuart Solomon, died from cancer. “It was my dad‘s favorite restaurant,” she says. “He always liked

The connections are even deeper and more modern: The Ghormleys, while living, working and raising their three daughters in St. Petersburg, bought a second home on Longboat Key during the pandemic, to have an isolated family bubble. That’s when they started going to Euphemia Haye regularly again.

In addition to the history, Arpke says Jason Ghormley was one of the few interested buyers who came with business chops and a plan. “He asked all the right questions,” Arpke says, “and he really knew what he wanted to do.”

The timeline from conversation to closing the sale to back in business was condensed: Euphemia Haye was open again by Memorial Day weekend. The Arpkes and Rachel Ghormley, in separate interviews, declined to disclose the sales price for the business. The building, at 5540 Gulf of Mexico Drive, sold for $1.48 million May 28, Manatee County property records show.

PRIVATE SIDE

The Ghormleys — Rachel is 41, Jason is 51 — have made other investments in Longboat and the surrounding area, in addition to Euphemia Haye.

On the business side, the couple, says Rachel Ghormley, are silent minority partners with the ownership group that bought a trio of Manatee County waterfront restaurants all north of Euphemia Haye last summer.

The company, Pinellas County-based Beachside Hospitality, acquired Sandbar Seafood & Spirits, Beach House Waterfront Restaurant and Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub from longtime area restaurant owner Ed Chiles.

On the residential side, September 2020 is when they bought their Longboat home amid the pandemic, soon after the couple’s youngest daughter was born. That property, Sarasota property records show, is a 5,259-squarefoot home with five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a boat dock. The couple paid $1.9 million for it. Continued from Page 71 a condo in the new St. Regis Longboat Key Resort for $13 million, according to the Sarasota County Property Appraiser. They own both properties today, in addition to owning two homes and a waterfront residential home site in Pinellas County.

While the purchases are searchable in public records, there is little information about the Ghormleys in other online sources — and that’s on purpose. Neither Jason or Rachel Ghormley have any social media accounts. And after Rachel Ghormley chatted about buying Eupehmia Haye while sitting in the restaurant one recent afternoon with a reporter, Jason Ghormley, working nearby in the bar area, declined an opportunity to be interviewed.

Even Jason Ghormley’s bio on Hydrologic's website has little information about him or the business, saying he’s a founding member and a board member with 22 years’ experience and is on an industry leadership council and part of an industry buying group.

Rachel Ghormley, meanwhile, is the primary owner of what she calls a small industrial machinery supply business in Tampa, declining to provide specifics.

“We are very private people,” Rachel Ghormley says.

The interest from people to get to know them — from media, local residents and tourists — she adds, is both frequent and a surprise. People come up to Jason while he’s at the pool at the St. Regis to thank him for buying Euphemia Haye, she says, and people ask to meet her regularly while she’s working the floor at the restaurant. “I am so surprised people keep coming up to me,” she says.

Two other people thankful for the Ghormleys are the Aprkes, the longtime Euphemia Haye owners. The Aprkes talk to Rachel and Jason regularly, says D’Arcy Arpke, and are rooting for the couple. “We’re very positive about them,” she says. “We’re glad it's them.”

NEXT GENERATION

The Ghormleys might be quiet about their personal lives.

But the work they have put, and are putting, into Eupehmia Haye, is visible.

chase and then the first few days after closing, Jason, says Rachel, “worked around the clock and was barely home.” On the logistics side, they had to have a lawyer look at much of the paperwork, including the liquor license, and also, she says, had some debt to take care of related to the restaurant.

Rachel’s parents, Stuart and Patrica Solomon, owned the Olde World Cheese Shop and Docker’s restaurant in Bradenton in the 1980s and 1990s.

But even though her family was in the business, Rachel says she and Jason had no formal restaurant training or experience when they bought Euphmia Haye.

One of the biggest surprises, so far, Rachel says, is how expensive all the work has been, from changing carpets to painting. “Every project costs more than I thought it would,” she says.

On the food side, the core menu will remain the same with some changes and updates brought in slowly. Some shifts are subtle but important touches, Rachel says. One example: adding butter packets to go along with the usual butter in the cup for bread, so customers have a choice.

son Blanche on Longboat Key, Rachel says, “is a fabulous representation of fine dining.” She also chats with bartenders at the St. Regis about cocktail ideas, and she says, every restaurant the couple goes to in Aspen, Colorado, “is fantastic.” (Whether Aspen or Sarasota, Rachel says Jason is constantly taking photos of the plates coming out of the kitchen “like he’s a tourist.”)

The research has a purpose. For one, the couple is thinking ahead, says Rachel, in building a place, in food, service, culture and ambiance, where a “younger generation can also love Euphemia Haye.”

Not that they are overlooking the current clientele. The regulars continue to motivate the Ghormleys to do more at the restaurant. On the potential list is bringing back Ray Arpke to do cooking and lunch sessions and a reserve wine list. A celebration of being open 50 years and possibly a food and wine fest are also on their minds.

“This is a special place to so many people, and it’s been very gratifying to hear all the stories about how happy people are that we are open,” she says.

“There is a lot of love we are putting into this.”

From polar bears in the Arctic to pelicans on Lido Beach, Lou Newman has spent the last two decades capturing the world through his lens.

e’s been swiped at by a polar bear in the Arctic, charged by a bull elephant in Tanzania, brushed by a brown bear in Alaska, and had a cheetah jump on the hood of a safari vehicle just a few feet away from him. And each time he kept on snapping pictures. He spent an afternoon in Kenya following a leopard on the hunt and saw it finally make a kill, and he photographed it along the way. He trudged up and down mountains for hours in Uganda searching for gorillas, only to find them way up in the trees and all but impossible to capture with his camera.

Lou Newman had all these adven-

tures — and many others far less perilous — after the age of 70. It bears repeating: after the age of 70.

That’s when he could devote himself to wildlife photography in what he calls a “career in retirement.” Newman is 94 now, and lives comfortably in Plymouth Harbor, his residence for the last 20 years. He has slowed down, as you’d expect, but still heads out a few mornings a week to snap pics — focusing on birds in flight but also coming away with other avian images.

Newman occasionally takes photography excursions farther afield, but only to places he can reach by car.

His days as a globe-trotting wildlife photographer have passed. And he’s OK with it. Newman says he’s been to

every state, 72 countries and all seven continents.

“My favorite thing to do these days is to go out to Lido Beach before sunrise and shoot for about two to three hours,” Newman says. “I shoot during the golden hour, the first part of the morning when the sun is at an angle.”

He also takes excursions to Celery Fields, Myakka River State Park, Venice Rookery and other spots. He brings binoculars, a light foldable chair and his trusty Canon outfitted with a 100–500-millimeter lens.

When Newman goes out on his local morning expeditions, he likes to shoot in full sunlight and let as much light through the lens as he can. He is capturing birds in motion through a telephoto lens, so he uses fast shutter speeds, ranging from 1/2,000 to 5/2,000 of a second.

As far as setting himself up to shoot, “one of my cardinal rules is, when at all possible, point your shadow at the bird,” he explains. “It might mean moving a few feet one way or the other.

I want the sun behind me.

The ideal [situation] is when both the sun and the wind are at my back — because the birds always take off and land into the wind.”

Newman shoots between 2,000 and 5,000 images.

Unlike pictures taken on point-and-shoot cameras, these are raw files — unprocessed, uncompressed image files that contain all the data captured by the camera’s sensors. That day, he goes through the images rather quickly and tags the keepers — about 10% of them. “I can go through 2,000 pictures in less than an hour,” he says. “Over time, I will pick an average of two or three images from most folders for processing for note cards, messages to my kids and friends and pictures for my educational emails and printing [materials].”

Newman uses Adobe Photoshop to process and edit the images. “At minimum, I crop them and sharpen them,” he says.

For you camera geeks, Newman has two Canon EOS R5 Mark II mirrorless cameras, plus seven lenses.

The three that he uses are a 24-105mm, a 100-500mm and a 200-800mm, all by Canon.

Continued from Page 75 a cozy one-bedroom he calls his “bachelor pad.” A side room is cluttered with camera gear, a couple of computer screens, printers, stacks of papers, a carved wooden walking stick and other stuff. Outside Newman’s door, in the communal space, hang several of his photos, blown up and framed. He figures that about 500 of his pictures hang on walls around town.

Newman sits in an easy chair overlooking Sarasota Bay, wearing shorts, sneakers and a maroon golf shirt. No two ways about it, he looks terrific — a nonagenarian who could pass for far younger, still ruggedly handsome. It’s fair to say, however, that he doesn’t feel as good as he looks. In 2023, Newman was the victim of a devastating car accident near St. Armands Circle, where he was broadsided by another driver.

He suffered two fractured vertebrae that required a five-hour surgery during which the surgeon installed “a lot of hardware,” Newman says. After the procedure, one of his kids asked the doctor how their dad was faring. “Let’s see if he makes it through the night,” he replied, according to Newman. He spent three weeks in the hospital and endured six months of intensive rehab.

He still has problems with strength and balance, so he works out with a trainer three days a week at the Plymouth Harbor gym.

Newman lived an extraordinary life before traveling the world and clicking pictures of alligators, anteaters, gazelles, elephants, lions, zebras, hyenas, hippos, pandas, iguanas, capybaras, wildebeests, sea lions, humpback whales and more bird species than one can count, including penguins in Antarctica.

To chronicle his life in any depth would be impossible to do in the space allotted, so a highly abridged summary will have to do.

TAKING WING The son of a General Electric executive, Newman spent his early life in Schenectady, N.Y., and Lynn, Massachusetts, and went to high school in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The oldest of three, Newman was an industrious lad, with a couple of paper routes and a series of jobs, including one in a greenhouse that paid 25 cents an hour.

As a teen, he used a Kodak 35 to snap pics of mundane kid things like model airplanes and sailboats. He had a dark room in the basement.

Newman took to animals early. “I decided I wanted to be a farmer,” he says.

“My first love became cows. I always wanted to work with cattle.”

Instead of life on the farm, he chose the veterinary track. Newman did his undergrad work at University of New Hampshire and earned his veterinary degree at Cornell. During college, he met and married his first wife, Leslie. Pursuing his bovine interests, Newman moved his family of three to Wyoming and joined a veterinary practice. Then, looking to go out on his own, he chose Glasgow, Montana, a remote town in ranching country in the northeast quadrant of the state.

Newman drove hundreds of miles a week to tend to ailing cattle and after a time set it up so the ranchers would truck the animals to his clinic.

He delivered a lot of calves by Caesarian section, charging around $40 and also tended to dogs and cats and other pets. One year, he says, the Newmans endured 88 straight days of sub-zero weather. But life was good. The practice was thriving. Lou and Leslie had six children. He took photographs, mostly in the context of his profession.

“But I knew I wanted to be a wildlife photographer when I retired,” he says.

Continued from Page 77 worse. Leslie became ill with colon cancer. The Newmans picked up stakes and moved to East Lansing, Michigan, home of Michigan State University.

Newman juggled three roles: graduate student, instructor and running the college’s veterinary outreach program.

The new environment provided Leslie better health care, but she died at age 37. On becoming a single father of six kids, the usually voluble Newman says, “Yeah, it was hard.”

He had three subsequent marriages that were “difficult,” but he remains on good terms with his ex-wives. He has nine kids in all, ranging in age from 69 to 37. They’re spread around the country, with his two youngest daughters residing in Tampa. Every other year, Newman rents condos on Longboat Key for his extended family of 40. “I look at it as an investment, so the kids will be a family long after I’m gone,” he says. The gathering in 2023 wasn’t so fun. That’s when he had his auto accident — on Father’s Day. Newman earned his doctorate in

veterinary pathology from Michigan State and took positions as director of veterinary diagnostic labs at the universities of Kentucky and Georgia. He spent about 10 years leading up to his retirement taking classes and learning the finer points of wildlife photography. He wanted to hit the trail running as soon as he left the working world.

SOARING INTO A SECOND CAREER Newman retired to Venice in 2000. His parents had lived in Plymouth Harbor so he and his family made regular visits to the area. He founded Lou Newman Photography — a one-man operation — to market his images. After a couple of years, he realized, “I don’t like this, trying to sell things. I went from being a professional wildlife photographer to a semi-professional wildlife photographer.” These days, he sells the occasional photo, presents some as gifts and donates images to charities like Save Our Seabirds and the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center.

In the earlier years of his retire-

ment, Newman provided voluntary vet care for Mote Marine Laboratory and Pelican Man Bird Sanctuary, now Save Our Seabirds. He taught photography and digital imaging on cruise ships.

Most of his far-flung photography expeditions were with groups. He was fortunate enough to attract mentors and make friends with established wildlife shooters. One of his favorite sojourns was in the early 2010s when he was part of a coterie that ventured to the Midway Atoll, which was home to a naval facility that played a crucial role in the WWII Battle of Midway in 1942. His and his group stayed for a week, roughing it in former military barracks and photographing the rare Laysan albatross.

To be clear, Newman doesn’t consider his scrapes with wild mammals life-threatening — except, perhaps, for the elephant incident. He and a few others were atop a safari vehicle.

“There was a car coming the other way, and the elephant felt trapped,” Newman recounts. “He charged our vehicle. The gal next to me is screaming, the [driver] is backing up as fast

as he could.

“And I’m shooting,” he continues with a grin. “There was a trail off to the side, and when the elephant saw it he veered off.” It all happened so fast and Newman was so engaged in the photographic moment that he didn’t have time to be truly frightened.

Newman went on a few magazine assignments, but self-financed the rest of

his trips, the most expensive of which was the roughly $20,000 he paid for a three-week tour to the Antarctic. He saw eight of his kids through college, and all eight went on to advanced education. Newman says he has never considered himself wealthy but invested smartly and “there’s no question that throughout my life I was a squirrel. I put away a significant portion of my

income.”

These days, he’s content with his toned-down photography regimen.

“My happy place is sitting on a beach with a camera,” he says.

s if this house isn’t notable enough — it has the best location in town, the best view, the highest price tag — it has another claim to fame. It was the setting of one of Sarasota’s most riveting social dramas. For a while it was a “Real Housewives” episode come to life, complete with fights, feuds, scandals and a seeming endless supply of money. It was utterly trivial yet had the whole town fascinated.

This was the home of Mack and Charlotte Vick. They moved here in 1992 from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was a urologist and she worked at a law firm. In some sort of licensing lottery, she won the right to buy a cell phone tower. That led to another tower, then another, and that was the beginning of their fortune.

And fortune it was. The home they built in 1996, on Westway Drive in Lido Shores, had every possible superlative.

It was the crown jewel on the most prestigious street in town. It boasted the best stretch of beach and a view that managed to include the Gulf, New Pass and the beaches and high-rises of Longboat. The scale was imperial, with grand staircases, giant skylights, vast terraces and an infinity pool.

The home sits on almost two acres of land and at the end of a longish drive.

Its style suggests the Vicks’ Louisiana background — there’s more than a hint of French New Orleans in its symmetrical façade, complete with pillars and balconies.

Was their home specifically built for entertaining? It’s hard to say, but it fulfilled that function beautifully.

The highlight was the roof terrace, four floors up, with its trademark black and white tile floor. It even had its own kitchenette and bath. Parties would usually start out here, to catch the remarkable sunsets. There were multiple options for dinner. It might be downstairs on the terrace, or if it was small group, in the formal dining room with its pillars and tray ceiling.

Underneath, on the bottom level, there was another elaborate terrace where there might be dancing, complete with disco lights.

The home’s living room was a vast space, opening onto a large terrace overlooking the Gulf. There was a fireplace on one side and a bar on the other, complete with a glass enclosed wine room. The impressive kitchen had two of everything. There were several offices, including one with a roll-down wall, a new interpretation of a roll-down desk. But the home’s real stunner was the primary suite, vast in size, with its own terrace, a marble bathroom the size of a small home — it’s over 30 feet long — an exercise room and extra spacious closets.

One of the most notable things about the Vicks was how well they looked the part. She was tall, beautiful, incredibly trim from all that tennis she played. He was even taller, with a full head of spiky grey hair and a chiseled

face. They raised the town’s glamour quotient by several hundred degrees.

They were not just rich; they were beautiful and rich.

The Vicks became part of the social clique of millionaires who lived on Westway Drive at the time, and soon they — or at least Charlotte — moved on to conquer the rest of the town. She began hosting large parties

for the Asolo, then became even more important to them as a fundraiser.

She dreamt up the then-famous Asolo cruises, whereby the theater’s supporters would all take a luxury cruise together. They were very successful until a trivial dispute over who, the Vicks or another couple, would get the best suite erupted into a full-scale feud.

But the real turning point came with the famous article in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Subscribers opened their paper one Sunday morning to see Charlotte, reclining on a chaise in her living room, surrounded by 10 or 12 people. This was her team, she proudly acknowledges, those who make her glamorous life possible. You see her masseuse, tennis instructor, dermatologist, the general manager of Saks, the party planner from Michael’s On East.

What was meant as a lighthearted take on how Sarasota’s rich live became something else. People took offense. Letters came into the editor, decrying the tone-deaf attitude of the Continued on Page 90

One widely quoted letter stated that they were the reason things like the French revolution happened. It was an unhappy moment the couple never recovered from and, in 2002, they put the house on the market.

They first moved to Colorado, leaving the beach for the mountains. Later reports have put them back in Baton Rouge, running a med-spa specializing in Botox and cool-sculpting and then retiring in Alabama.

The couple who bought the house from the Vicks — for $13 million — still own it. They have kept a low profile over the years, using it for occasional family vacations. It has remained basically the same; the most interesting addition has been a bunk room for visiting grandchildren. Now the owners have decided to move on and are listing the home for $20 million, one of the highest priced homes in Sarasota.

It’s impossible to say what the future

holds for such a spectacular beachfront estate. It is widely rumored that Steven Tyler has been to see the house more than once. He was accompanied by bandmate Joe Perry, who has a place on Longboat Key. Or maybe he was accompanied by Lenny Kravitz.

(It all depends on which rumor you

listen to.)

At any rate, Mr. Tyler’s interest validates this extraordinary piece of property. It really is a rock star of a house.

It’s got privacy, a dramatic setting, every luxury — and even a dramatic backstory of bittersweet Sarasota history.

Glen and Tony Medeiros of Lobster Pot The Medeiros family serves New England classics with Portuguese passion.

BY MARTY FUGATE CONTRIBUTOR Ralph Medeiros and his wife, Adeline, opened the original Lobster Pot in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in 1943.

More than 80 years later, the pot’s still boiling close to home. Their son, Glen Medeiros, brought the family tradition to Siesta Key in 2000, where the Lobster Pot has been a local landmark ever since. Today, Glen, his wife, Kathy, and their son Tony and his wife, Francine, keep the heritage alive — serving fresh seafood with authentic New England flair, along with a few treasured Portuguese recipes from Grandma’s handwritten cookbook.

The secret of Lobster Pot’s success is …

Glen: Family, first and foremost. When we opened on Siesta Key, we brought my parents’ recipes with us — and the same work ethic. My son Tony runs the place as general manager. He handles the front and back of the house, orders the seafood and keeps the ship sailing.

His wife, Francine, helps run the floor.

Cathy, my other half, still hosts part time. This is a true family affair!

Our restaurant is a story …

Tony: … spanning several generations.

My grandfather was a fisherman from Lisbon. My parents built the original Lobster Pot in Provincetown — on a barge, no less. Now we’re serving the grandchildren of our first customers here in Florida. One family used to bring their kids in car seats. Now those kids work for us. That’s how long we’ve been part of this community. We’ve all got plenty of stories. Just come inside and pull up a chair.
