+ Brain Trust honors Bob Peterson A group of men known as “The Brain Trust” work on solving the world’s problems as they dine together every Tuesday afternoon. The men recently held a special meeting to honor long-time member Bob Peterson, who will be “stepping down” from the group, along with another long-time member, Bob Tate. Peterson has been a member of the group for 15 of the 20 years it has been in existence. Peterson is known in Sarasota for a variety of achievements and for his charitable contributions.

+ TBS hosts sisterhood fashion show The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Sholom held its annual fashion show and luncheon Feb. 8. The theme was “Sophisticated Ladies.” The event raised money for scholarships to The Martin & Mildred Paver Religious School as well as funds for Temple Beth Sholom children wanting to attend Camp Ramah Darom.
When Jim Bridges, CEO of Jebco Ventures Inc., looks at the downtown parcel adjacent to the Palm Avenue parking garage, he envisions something unlike any other project he’s handled. A longtime commercial builder, Bridges wants to erect a hotel on the site, with the help of the well-known McKibbon Group, which either manages and/or has helped build more than 60 hotels. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Bridges started out as an apartment developer. He founded Jebco Ventures in 1975 and branched out, constructing shopping centers, grocery stores, office buildings and some residential complexes. Among them has been a 225,000-square-foot facility for Caterpillar Inc. But Bridges is eager to try something new. “We are a diversified company, and we

Floridays Development Co. CEO Angus Rogers is convinced the city he has called home for the past 19 years needs the type of hotel that can draw significant attention. He already knows how to make a property stand out: His 432-room Floridays hotel in Orlando is ranked the No. 1 hotel destination in that area, despite the fact it is surrounded by a slew of franchise hotels. In Sarasota, Rogers wants to build a 180-room boutique hotel on Palm Avenue; his management firm would operate it independently. “We have already designed one hotel that didn’t fit into the proverbial hotelbrand box, and it became a big success,” Rogers said, referring to the Orlando property. “It’s a testament to our team and how we take care of guests. It can be done here.”

Editor’s note: Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown told the Sarasota City Commission during its regular meeting Tuesday that city staff will prepare the financial aspects of both hotel proposals for commission review during the March 5 regular meeting. City Attorney Bob Fournier also will take time during the session to discuss legal concerns related to the proposals. Both applicants will have a chance to respond to the commission and staff comments when the commission conducts its March 19 regular meeting.
