Linde steps down, plans to move to SC Commissioner had one year left on term.

Armando Linde resigned from his position as town commissioner for District 1 on Tuesday.

His resignation was effective immediately. According to the town charter, a replacement from District 1 will be chosen by the remaining six commissioners within 30 days. A special election would be required if no new commissioner was seated within 90 days.

In his resignation letter to Mayor Terry Gans, who was renamed to his office a day earlier, Linde said the decision was unrelated to his work on the commission.

Instead, his resignation was inspired by his and his wife’s desire to be closer to family.

“Felicity and I have seen it necessary to accelerate plans to move closer this year to our growing family in South Carolina,” Linde wrote.

Linde said he has enjoyed his six years on the Key, particularly his involvement in the Kiwanis Club and serving on the Town Commission.

Linde retired as an economist from the International Monetary Fund in 2010. He lost a run for an at-large seat against Irwin Pastor in March 2014, but won the District 1 seat in March 2016. He also served several town boards and was active in the Longboat Key

In his resignation letter, Linde congratulated Gans on his reelection to the mayorship.

“It has been a privilege working with you and an honor representing the citizens of District 1,” Linde wrote.

Linde said he and his wife will miss the many friends and colleagues they have met on the Key. He said they have sold their home and they plan to leave April 10.

“Longboat Key will always be nestled deep in our minds and close to our hearts,” Linde wrote.

In his response, Gans expressed his understanding for Linde’s situation.

“Any disappointment I have over the loss of having you as a colleague is tempered by the knowledge that you will have the joy of being closer to family,” Gans wrote.

“Your time on our island may have been short in years, but your dedication to service has been immense,” Gans added. “We thank you.”

Gans said the commission will discuss the topic of replacing Linde at Wednesday’s workshop meeting, with the soonest date a new commissioner could be seated being April 3, the day of the next regular Town Commission meeting.

When Terry Gans was chosen in December to take over the mayor’s seat from Jack Duncan, who stepped down for health reasons, he knew his run as mayor might be short.

At the time, Gans told his wife, Diane, that if he only had four months as mayor, he was going to get a year’s worth of work done.

Key residents will now get to see how much Gans can accomplish in an actual year.

Commissioners chose Gans to serve a full term as mayor at a Town Commission meeting on Monday evening. Commissioners chose Ed Zunz as vice mayor.

“It sounds cliche, but it is an honor,” Gans said after the meeting, which was attended by dozens of people.

Following last week’s elections, Monday’s meeting was held to formally seat Jim Brown, re-seat Jack Daly and George Spoll and choose a mayor and vice mayor.

Armando Linde was the single commissioner who did not voice his support for Gans for the mayorship, instead nominating and voting for Spoll. Spoll, along with the rest of the commissioners, cast their votes for Gans.

When it came time to select the vice mayor, the decision was less clear cut.

Again, Linde nominated Spoll. Spoll nominated Zunz.

Daly nominated Brown. Gans nominated Irwin Pastor.

As four votes are required for the position, it took two rounds of voting before the vice mayorship was decided in Zunz’s favor.

Zunz said he was honored and surprised, despite lessons learned during his professional career. “As a lawyer, you always learn to consider every possibility,” Zunz said.

The Town Commission also bid farewell to outgoing Vice Mayor Phill Younger, who reached his term limit.

The commissioners shared kind words about Younger, portraying him as a hard-working commissioner whose productivity knew no bounds, who managed to be both flexible and steadfast in his decisionmaking. Pastor praised Younger for his attention to detail.

“It’s all a pack of lies,” Younger responded to his colleagues, jokingly. “But I appreciate them.”

Younger said it has been a privilege to serve the town.

“I don’t know where I’m going to go when I leave this mortal coil,” Younger said. “But at least I know I made it to heaven while I’m alive.”

Key issues will be front and center for Longboat’s new commission.

lenty of handshakes and well wishes went around this week as the ceremonial side of the Town Commission took center stage.

Election day was less than a week in the rear-view mirror.

Newly elected (or re-elected) commissioners were seated, a mayor and vice mayor were named and a former colleague on the Town Hall dais stepped aside.

But before long, the new commission will be right back at it, dealing with the town’s crucial issues. Immediately, they’ll be called upon to pick a replacement for colleague Armando Linde, who resigned on Tuesday.

Here are five long-term issues that will also grab their attention almost immediately:

PLANNED-UNIT DEVELOPMENTS

CHARTER REVIEW The commission will select up to seven citizens to make up the Charter Review Committee, which is established once every 10 years.

This committee will consider potential changes to the Town Charter, a document that serves as a basic framework under which the municipality operates.

After hearing comments from commissioners, town staff and the public, the committee may choose to suggest potential changes to the charter. Whether these changes are implemented will be left up to voters.

Potential changes could be small, like tweaking language in the document, or large, like changing election day or eliminating the Code Enforcement Board.

Names that have been floated for the Charter Review Committee include former vice mayors Phill Younger and David Brenner, as well as former commissioners Randy Clair and Pat Zunz.

HEIGHT RULES

The construction of an elevator shaft on top of a new home on Halyard Lane has caused strife among Country Club Shores residents.

This structure reaches about 10 feet above the Key’s 30-foot height limit for homes. This shaft and others like it are considered exceptions to the town’s height restrictions.

Earlier this month, the Town Commission considered amending the rules based on recommendations from the Planning and Zoning Board to minimize the impact that these structures have on neighboring properties. The recommendations included reducing the square footage of these top-of-roof structures from 15% of the roof area to 10%, the minimum required by the Florida Building Code.

A number of Country Club Shores residents attended the meeting, hoping to sway commissioners to consider more stringent rules. Many said they were concerned not only with their neighborhood, but with others.

The Town Commission sent the rules amendment back to the Planning and Zoning Board for re-evaluation to explore more restrictive possibilities.

The Planning and Zoning Board will discuss the changes at 9 a.m. April 18.

TOWN CENTER The Town Commission this week is expected to discuss a budget transfer of $2.2 million for the town to purchase the Amore Restaurant property.

With the purchase of the property, the town will be one step closer to initiating construction on the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, Culture and Education and setting into motion the notion of a true town center.

This cultural center is a collaboration between Ringling College and the town.

Warren Simonds of the Longboat Key Foundation, the group spearheading the cultural efforts and raising money for the project, has said he hopes the center will have a space for weddings, classes and a theater with seating for 200 to 300.

Assistant Town Manager Mike Hein hopes a concept for the center will be ready for Town Commission consideration by fall.

Commissioner Irwin Pastor called the center an exciting project, which he hopes will bring the Key community together.

“I think there’s a cry for it, quite frankly,” Pastor said, speaking of public support.

UNDERGROUNDING

Assistant Town Manager Mike Hein said the referendum-approved project that will move Key power lines underground, and cost roughly $50 million, is on schedule to initiate construction in 2018.

Beginning his second term as commissioner for District 4, Jack Daly said undergrounding will “enhance the safety and reliability” of the town’s infrastructure, especially during hurricanes.

“It’s a major undertaking, and it’s going to take some commission oversight,” Daly said.

However, the project faces a potential challenge in the form of Florida House Bill 687 and Senate Bill 596. These bills would limit a government’s ability to regulate the infrastructure of wireless communications providers.

Mayor Terry Gans and Vice Mayor Ed Zunz have said that opposing the legislation is crucial as its effects could be substantial.

“The potential is almost overwhelming,” Zunz said.

This legislation would negate the town’s undergrounding efforts by leaving the authorization of these above-ground structures to the Florida Legislature.

The Town Commission will consider the assistance of lawyer and lobbyist Dean Cannon to support the Key in having its concerns regarding the bills heard in Tallahassee.

Last month, members of the Planning and Zoning Board discussed the prospect of new planned-unit development rules, which are designed to encourage redevelopment through a voluntary zoning process.

The board approved language in an ordinance that allows additional height — up to 80 feet — for new buildings, so long as these buildings are set back 2.5 times the height from Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The Town Commission will discuss the rules on Wednesday, March 22, and possibly decide to move the proposal to its April 3 meeting for its first public hearing.

Before the referendum regarding the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort property was decided last week, Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments, had urged the Planning and Zoning Board to consider making the language in the ordinance based on the number of stories, not a set number of feet.

The board’s proposed 80-foot limit equals about seven stories. Whittall hopes for at least eight stories.

Now that Whittall’s original proposal has been rejected, the developer said he plans to put in a new proposal after the Town Commission has finalized the PUD process.

Finding a short-term fix for traffic congestion at U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue is challenging for local officials, but the state is working on a long-term project to improve the intersection.

The Florida Department of Transportation will hold a workshop March 28 to discuss the future of the U.S. 41-Gulfstream intersection with the public. The state has been working with Sarasota since last summer to evaluate the best plan to improve the intersection.

After nine months of work, the state is considering two options for the intersection. One would add a roundabout to U.S. 41 and Gulfstream, which would be in line with Sarasota’s advocacy for a network of roundabouts along U.S. 41. The other would keep the traffic signal and add a left-turn lane from northbound U.S. 41 to westbound Gulfstream. The state is also considering making no significant adjustments.

After the meeting, the state will continue to work on the plans before producing a final recommendation in November.

FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen said a confluence of factors will determine the state’s final recommendation, including crash data, vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle counts, cost and

available right of way.

Roundabouts are in various phases of planning at 14th Street, 10th Street and Fruitville Road.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the state will recommend another roundabout at Gulfstream, but Stublen said there are advantages to a series of roundabouts on the same street.

“What happens when you get several roundabouts on the same roadway in a particular area — it has a little bit of a calming effect on the traffic,” Stublen said. “You don’t have to worry about signal lights at the intersections where the roundabouts are installed, so traffic moves much freer.”

In February, Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans spoke at a transportation workshop, urging Sarasota planners to consider the upstream effects on the barrier islands before coming to a decision.

“Fruitville Road is a critical element of the regional transportation network,” Gans said.

So, what’s next for the former Colony Beach and Tennis Resort?

After 87% of Longboat Key voters rejected Unicorp National Development’s ballot request to seek up to 180 new residential units in the redevelopment of the once-iconic resort, President

Chuck Whittall is adamant about one thing: he’s coming back with a new plan.

“It’s still going to be a five-star resort. It will still consist of condominiums,” he said. “But it will just be much closer to the current density that’s on the property today.”

Whittall met with the media the morning after the March 14 defeat at the polls and offered a glimpse of what he wants to see happen on the 18-acre, gulf-front property.

One of his first moves was reaching out to the property’s unit owners.

Via email, Whittall offered $50,000 a unit to any owner who would be willing to sell immediately. Previously, he had offered owners $130,000 to $200,000 a unit. He didn’t say if there were any takers.

“Obviously with us losing the density we had sought after, it changes the value of the property,” Whittall said. “If you can build less on it, it’s worth less.”

Voters turned down Whittall’s request for up to 180 additional residential units on the property.

With 237 grandfathered tourism units at the shuttered resort, it

could have meant as many 417 units, pending additional town approvals.

Despite this hurdle, Whittall said he has no intention of selling the property. Instead, he and his staff are working on a less-ambitious proposal, though aspects of the initial plan will remain the same.

The developer did not offer any specific details regarding the number of units that will be included in the new proposal, but he did mention that number will be comparable to the 237 units already approved for the property.

Whittall held many meetings with Key residents before the referendum, so he was not surprised by the results, he said. Residents’ most frequent objections centered on the traffic generated by a revamped resort and its proposed

10-12 story buildings, which residents said didn’t fit the low-key character of Longboat Key. In a letter delivered to some residents and an email sent to city leaders, Whittall said his new plan would feature lower-rise buildings.

“We’ve heard the community loud and clear that they don’t want more density,” Whittall said. “We ultimately want to build something the community will embrace.”

The developer added that, if he could have changed the language in the referendum to include less density before it went to a vote, he would have.

Meanwhile, political action committee Preserve Longboat Inc. will stay intact, said PAC President Frank Morneau. Before the referendum, the PAC was responsible for signs up and down the Key, as well as frequent emails to voters, all urging residents to vote against Whittall’s proposal.

The PAC intends to take a position on what members think the ideal result would be for the property, Morneau said, keeping in mind the wants of both immediate neighbors and all Key residents.

The PAC will have a meeting this week to discuss plans for the future, Morneau said.

Whittall plans to submit a new proposal for the property after the Town Commission approves a new Planned Unit Development process, which he hopes will happen in May. The developer still intends to break ground on the project in 2018, and hopes the resort will open at the end of 2020.

“This will get done,” he said.

“It’s just part of the process.”

FDOT announces test schedule for New Pass drawbridge The announcement comes after the tests caused standstill traffic on election day.

In light of traffic problems caused by drawbridge testing at New Pass last week, the Florida Department of Transportation announced

on Monday a schedule for future tests.

Beginning March 21, the four required daily drawbridge openings were moved to between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. seven days a week. If all four tests cannot happen during that time, openings because of normal boat traffic will count toward the required number.

The drawbridge over New Pass opens for vessels on an ondemand basis and does not have

a set schedule.

The testing period is expected to last through mid-May, according to FDOT. The announcement comes after motorists on Longboat Key stood still in miles-long traffic heading south on Gulf of Mexico Drive on March 14, which was election day, because of the testings.

It did not take long for town staff to begin fielding complaints.

According to an email sent by Town Manager Dave Bullock to a

FDOT official on March 16, more than 30 residents called or walked into Town Hall to voice their frustrations about the traffic.

“People are incensed that the decision to work on the bridge and conduct multiple openings during our very peak traffic weeks was made,” Bullock wrote. “The month of March is absolute peak season. This is not new information.”

The improvements being made to the bridge include replacing controls, which requires significant electronic and hydraulic adjustments. Bullock questioned why such extensive work could not be scheduled during the offseason.

“There are at least eight months of non-peak season that are available for repairs,” Bullock wrote.

When Mayor Terry Gans received an email from a resident concerned by the traffic, he was able to empathize from experience, for he had found himself stuck in the election day jams going to and from the Key, sitting for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Though he wished he had a better answer for the resident,

Gans could not explain how the decision was made to conduct the testings during such a highvolume period.

“To our thinking, the ‘perfect storm’ was unnecessary as FDOT had committed to us that bridge openings as part of the repair work would be limited to evening hours or absolute necessity,” Gans wrote. “Either the word did not get to the onsite contractors, or there have been a record-breaking number of absolute necessities.”

Last week, a spokesman for FDOT affirmed that the department will improve efforts to keep the public informed.

The spokesman noted that, if all such construction was limited to the offseason, FDOT would not have enough labor to complete its projects.

He added that the required drawbridge testing cannot be performed at night because of concerns regarding safety and noise, referring to the horn that blares during bridge openings.

If the tests can only take place during daylight hours, Bullock requested FDOT schedule testings early in the morning or in the evening to avoid traffic backups like those experienced last week.

The spokesman also said efforts will continue to be made to coordinate bridge openings with the signal at Ken Thompson Parkway.

In Monday’s announcement, FDOT recognized that the department should plan for this type of bridgework to happen during the offseason.

“Moving forward we will make every effort to plan all coastal bridge projects start dates to avoid peak tourist season,” FDOT’s statement read.

Consider the Mote property. Six decades ago, when the newly formed town platted the island, it designated dozens and dozens of plats for commercial use. The Mote property was one of them.

But 40 years later, after nearly 100% of the Key was built out, it became obvious the original platting created an excess of commercial plats. That’s evident by the fact virtually all of the commercial centers on Longboat Key — with the exception of the Shoppes at Bay Isles — are aging and deteriorating.

There hasn’t been a new commercial building constructed in three decades.

In short, the Key has reached equilibrium with the amount of commercial property the Key’s residences support.

And even at its current balance, every commercial property owner struggles.

Redevelopment, economically, is out of the question. Ask Ryan Snyder at Whitney Beach.

So for nearly two decades, the late Bill Mote and now the Mote Scientific Foundation have been trying to sell the 1.8-acre vacant site at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive. But no one will buy it because it is zoned commercial.

Developers know: To construct a retail or office building there would be akin to playing a slot machine. A losing bet.

HOW THE BERT HARRIS ACT WORKS “The Bert Harris Act provides: “The terms ‘inordinate burden’ or ‘inordinately burdened’ mean that an action of one or more governmental entities has directly restricted or limited the use of real property such that the property owner is permanently unable to attain the reasonable, investment-backed expectation for the existing use of the real property or a vested right to a specific use of the real property with respect to the real property as a whole, or that the property owner is left with existing or vested uses that are unreasonable such that the property owner bears a disproportionate share of a burden imposed for the good of the public,

With exclamation points.

They don’t want any more. No new development over and above what exists. No additional residential development over and above what they capped in 1984. And it’s a good bet, if given the opportunity, Longboat voters would rescind their 2008 vote that created a pool of 250 tourism units to be brought back into existence.

Funny how times change. In the wake of the hotels-to-condos boom from 2004 to 2008, Longboat lost 250 hotel units. The effects were palpable. Every commercial enterprise on the Key suffered. Potential homebuyers dwindled.

Residents and town commissioners recognized the Key needed to keep alive the few restaurants and retailers that were here and keep full the pipeline of potential homebuyers. Otherwise the future appeared bleak.

Voter approval to create the tourism pool was near 90%.

Today, Longboaters are mad about traffic.

As a result, in two years, they overwhelmingly rejected — almost in a complete reversal of 2008 margins — five referendums to increase density.

We’ve cited the extraordinariness of the vote in 2016, when Longboat voters denied longtime Longboat Key property owner Oscar Parsons the ability to convert the top floor of his Harbour Square office building to one unit of residential use. One unit. What makes it even more extraordinary is the fact for many years it was zoned residential.

Parsons converted it to commercial use, and then wanted to go back to what it originally was.

But the voters said no. For one unit!

Two weeks ago, voters rejected Brista Homes’ request to convert from commercial use to residential use and allow up to 10 units at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive. This is the property owned by the Mote Scientific Foundation, a notfor-profit that would have benefited from the sale of the property to Brista.

But not even to help the foundation of the founder of Mote Marine Laboratory did Longboat voters budge.

Such unyielding intransigence on density is not surprising if you know Longboat Key history. But for every action, there usually is an equal and opposite reaction. This could be it: At what point will voters’ rejection of additional density constitute a government taking? At what point will it trigger Florida’s Bert Harris Act, the law created in 1995 to protect Florida property owners from government imposing an unfair regulatory burden that precludes an owner from the use of his property in favor of a benefit for the public (see box below).

“The owner may demonstrate such an ‘inordinate burden’ by showing either (1) that the property has been unfairly singled out to bear a ‘disproportionate’ share of the regulatory burden imposed to meet a legitimate governmental end, or (2) that the owner is now permanently unable to attain reasonable, investment-backed expectations for use of the property.

Those expectations may include expectations for the continued present use of the property, or for a vested right to a specific future use of the real property …

“The second means of proving

At the same time, the directors of the Mote Foundation see that the land’s intrinsic value is more than $1.1 million.

They don’t want to give it away.

But you say: That’s the risk Mote took when he bought it. The foundation should lower its price so it would make sense for a commercial developer.

But why should the foundation be forced — because of governmentimposed regulations (e.g. residential density cap and oversupply of commercial plats) — to sell well below the intrinsic value of the land? Should not the foundation be afforded the same opportunities as, say, its neighbors?

Or, consider the Bert Harris Act: An owner has a claim of injury if the remaining uses for the property after the government-imposed restrictions represent an unreasonable range.

There is no need for more commercial development on Longboat. The Mote board should not be forced to use the property unprofitably or to its detriment. The best use — and reasonable use — for the Mote property is residential. But the voters and town forbid it.

Seems like, feels like, looks like a taking.

Kicker: There are at least a half-dozen other commercial properties in the same position.

We elected the wrong guy

Make Gulf of Mexico Drive a toll road with cameras at each end taking pictures of license plates, like the system used for cars that run red lights. Modify the software to assess tolls and fines, if tolls are not paid. Tolls and fines should be high to modify driver behavior: tolls $10 and fines $100.

Assess tolls only if drivers pass through Longboat Key in less than two hours during high-traffic periods. Use strategically placed electronic signs to notify drivers of the tolls and encourage them to use U.S. 301 instead.

This system would alleviate traffic not only on LBK but also Tamiami Trail, Ringling Bridge and Fruitville Road, as well as on the west side of the Cortez Bridge.

Strong support from LBK residents is needed to get this done quickly. LBK residents must make their voices heard to get this low-cost, lowmaintenance traffic solution implemented quickly. Not much to lose. Just try it!

I do not know Jack Daly, but I am certain he is a very fine man.

He stated his top priorities in his next term as our newly re-elected Longboat Key commissioner are “continuing updates to the comprehensive plan; focusing on plans for the development of a cultural center; and oversight of burying island utilities.” He makes no mention, comment or suggestion about our horrendous traffic issues.

We have obviously elected the wrong person. Hopefully we’ll do better next time.

At one time years ago, we had comparatively little auto traffic to contend with and lighter traffic on the “bike path” now also known as the sidewalk.

Then came more people, a lot more people, until one might compare life on Longboat to an attempt to pour 10 gallons of gasoline into a 5-gallon can. The county or state responded with a law that provides for a stiff fine if auto drivers don’t maintain a certain distance from bikers.

Mind you, the law didn’t say for bikers to maintain their distance, the onus was placed on the motorist.

I have a plausible solution. In this case, my solution, at least temporarily is this: During the season, from December to April, simply close down one bridge by raising the span with a single provision for emergency operation.

This solution would solve our immediate traffic problem and would really not hurt anyone. We would soon readjust to the loss of that bridge and perhaps give the Department of Transportation time to fix the Cortez bridge, which is in need of repair or replacement.

Then, this too would provide some respite for all law enforcement along the gulfside keys. A true win-win.

St. Armands property sells after more than a decade Washington Drive home closes at $3.5 million.

A St. Armands Key property that many Longboaters are familiar with after driving past it on their way from St. Armands Circle, has a new owner after more than a decade on the real estate market.

The sale of the three-story waterfront home at 290 Washington Drive, at the corner of North Boulevard of the Presidents at the southeastern base of the bridge heading north toward Longboat Key, closed on Friday, March 17 for $3.5 million.

The Hedge Team with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty handled the sale.

With five bedrooms, four full baths, two half-baths, a pool and a dock, the home offers 6,799 square feet of air-conditioned space over three floors, according to the Sarasota County Property Appraiser. The home features 10,092 square feet of living space.

any buyer brought children, they always played hide and seek in the house, and that was the perfect hiding spot,” he said in an email.

The house was built to withstand tropical weather, featuring solid, poured concrete walls.

The home has been on the market since mid-October 2006.

Sarasota Vacation Properties LLC, the home’s owners, have employed five real estate brokers in marketing the property over the years. Premier Sotheby’s International Realty said the home might have been the longest-listed

home on the market in Sarasota.

A previous home on the property was torn down in 2005.

Hedge said an investor began construction on the current home in 2006, and it was first offered for sale then. The lender took the home back via a deed in lieu of foreclosure in 2011 and was put back up for sale, he said.

Originally priced at $8.45 million in 2006, the price was reduced to $4.49 million and then closed last week at $3.5 million.

Hedge said one of the challenges of the sale was the property’s

northern view, which was of the bridge and traffic leading off St. Armands Key. He said the new owners plan to dock a large boat, making their view to the north one of their boat and Sarasota Bay beyond.

The Corpus Christi, Texas, couple who bought the home plan to move in soon, according to Charlotte Hedges, brokerassociate with Premier Sotheby’s International.

embers of The Republican Club of Longboat Key got a little taste of Ireland at their March meeting.

Before the club’s meeting began on March 14, four Irish dancers performed.

Members and guests enjoyed dinner and a speech by Tom Trento, founder of The United West. Trento, whose presentation was entitled “A Culture in Crisis,” gave an analysis of the cultural crisis facing America.

Members arrived at the Portofino Restaurant of the Longboat Key Club for a social hour before the meeting was called to order. Club President Ken Marsh addressed the crowd first, giving some updates.

He was a member of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church in Longboat Key. He was president of Gold Label Publications. He composed six sacred music compositions, which were published.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; son Kyle Matthews; daughter Kerri Boyette; stepdaughter Catherine Fryback; sister Kay Matthews; and four grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on March 27 at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, 563 Bay Isles Road.

Richard Goldwater, 71, of Longboat Key, died March 7.

EUDORA DE RENNE ROEBLING

Eudora De Renee Roebling, of Sarasota, died March 5.

She was born in Savannah, Ga. and spent her early years at the family home, Wormsloe Plantation. In 1938, her family moved to Athens, Ga. She graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va., and Mount Holyoke College. Gardening, badminton and horseback riding were some of her favorite hobbies, and she was an avid supporter of the Pony Club. She was a Colonial Dame and a member of the Welsh Society, the Mount Holyoke Club and the Junior League.

In 1953, she married Wainwright Roebling in Athens, where they raised their family before moving to Panama City Beach.

She had a pilot’s license and an amateur-radio license. She loved fishing. Wainwright and Eudora lived in Longboat Key for 17 years before moving to Sarasota.

Eudora is survived by her husband; sons Robert and Henry Roebling; daughters Audrey Roebling, Mary Gabrielle and Clara Roebling.

Loraine Calvi, 98, of Fair Haven, Vt., died March 9.

She was born on March 8 to Thomas and Margaret Mahar.

She graduated as valedictorian from the Fair Haven High School and attended the University of Vermont and Bay Path Institute in Brattleboro, Vt. After college, she worked for banks in Fair Haven and Poultney, Vt. In 1943, she married Ned S. Calvi.

She and Ned owned and operated Woods Agency Inc. She was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Loraine was family oriented and active with her grandchildren, with whom she shared her homes in Fair Haven, Lake

off. Executive Vice President for Global Development Jacqueline Goldstein said all the kids have dreams and life goals.

And for the directors of the Israel Tennis Centers Foundation, bringing players to the U.S. is like bringing Israel to the community, Vice President of Development Yoni Yair said.

W

hile most people were still snug in their beds sleeping off their St. Patrick’s Day celebration, the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key was awake and warming up the griddles.

The Kiwanis Club hosted its Annual Pancake Breakfast on March 18 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church.

Fifteen club volunteers gathered at 6 a.m., before the sun was even up, and began cooking and preparing the food. Over the course of four hours, President Steve Branham estimates

that the club made more than 1,000 pancakes. Breakfast visitors also enjoyed sausage links, coffee and juice.

The breakfast is the club’s secondbiggest fundraiser following the Gourmet Lawn Party in early December, with all proceeds benefiting the club’s grant and scholarship fund. Last year, the breakfast raised around $3,000, and Branham said the club hopes to do the same this year.

Kiwanis members, eager to fill empty plates with stacks of pancakes, greeted hungry patrons as they arrived.

Branham said the breakfast is kind of like a cross section of all the people of Longboat Key. The breakfast draws a big crowd, young and old.

“It’s like a little gathering of people in town,” he said.

hen you can’t be in Dublin for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, you have to bring the parade to you.

And that’s exactly what Gulfshore and Twin Shores did on March 17. The two complexes hosted their 41st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which included appearances from St. Patrick and Uncle Sam. From singing and dancing to green beer and gold coins, the parade had all the bases covered.

After the parade, residents enjoyed corned beef sandwiches, green beer and snacks while playing games and enjoying the sunny weather. Later, winners for best golf cart or float, best costume and best miscellaneous participants were announced.

Kay Heigle, who dressed up as a leprechaun and sat in her very own pot of gold, said the parade is her favorite part of the day.

“I like to see what people come up with as far as decorations as costumes,” she said.

pot of gold may not have been sitting at Lynches Pub & Grub for its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration, but there was plenty of green beer.

From Wisconsin to South Carolina, visitors traveled to the pub on St. Armands Circle for the annual bash.

St. Patrick’s Day enthusiasts enjoyed corned beef and cabbage, live music and performances by bagpipers and Irish dancers. Performers took the stage on top of a replica pirate ship that sat across the street from Lynches.

t was an afternoon of friendship and fashion March 8 for the ladies and friends of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church.

The Episcopal Church Women hosted the annual fashion show at Bird Key Yacht Club.

Eight models showed off various fashionable outfits from Dream Weaver Collection, which is located on St. Armands Circle.

The retail store represents more than 50 of North America’s top fiber artists, according to its website.

Before the show, the ladies, and a few gentlemen, had the chance to bid on and enter raffles for various items, such as jewelry and artwork.

Proceeds from the event went to Family Promise of Sarasota, a local organization that addresses the needs of homeless families in the area.

fter dodging the rain at their annual golf tournament, Beachplace residents were ready for an evening of socializing.

On March 13, about 45 Beachplace residents participated in the complex’s 11th annual golf tournament at the Longboat Key Club. Later, the players and their families enjoyed cocktails, appetizers and dinner as the winners were announced.

t was a groovy Tuesday for the Key Niners Golf Association on March 14.

From pink retro tablecloths to tie-dye ensembles, the Harbourside Dining Room of the Longboat Key Club was like a time machine back into the ’70s for the association’s annual member-guest day.

Association members invited friends to play alongside them on the Harbourside golf course.

Some teams, of course, wore matching outfits. Tie-dye shirts and peace signs seemed to be the most popular clothing trends of the day. After a round of golf, the golfers enjoyed lunch before the winners were announced.
