Longboat loses ‘joyful’ couple with Amore closure As Longboat Key restaurant prepares to close in May, husband-and-wife team Tito and Liana Vitorino reflect on creating an island hangout.

Liana and Tito Vitorino don’t technically own Amore — but it’s tough to tell.

They arrive at the restaurant at 3:30 p.m. each day and don’t wrap up until around midnight.

restaurateurs’ sacred day off, Liana Vitorino, 49, takes phone calls from regular patrons.

One day after Thanksgiving, Longboat resident Allen Goldfarb was shocked to see Tito Vitorino on a 10-foot-tall ladder hanging holiday lights on one of the 28 trees on the two-acre property.

“He’s meticulous,” Goldfarb said. “He wants to make sure everything is right himself.”

The restaurant’s true owner, Howard Rooks, will sell the site and building to the town for $2.2 million next month, and the restaurant will close at the end of May. Although the Vitorinos and Rooks aim to continue the Amore tradition at a new space on St. Armands Circle or in downtown Sarasota, the trio and regulars lament the loss of a Longboat hangout — and a part of Colony Beach & Tennis Resort history.

“They just know the business and they care for people and that comes out in contact they have with our guests,” Rooks said.

Colony standout waiter, waitstaff captain and, ultimately, dining manager Tito Vitorino bounced between Bella Roma on Siesta Key and Mexican restaurant Cinco De Mayo in Sarasota after the Longboat resort closed seven years ago. Andrea Bozzolo, the original chef at Amore, first sought Vitorino for advice, then hired him as general manager when the restaurant opened in 2014.

Liana Vitorino, Tito’s first girlfriend and third wife, serves as the smiling hostess at the restaurant, whose building was designed to look like the Oak Room at the Plaza hotel in New York City. With older customers who may not have family on the Key — or in the state, for that matter — she aims to be their daughter-by-proxy.

She estimates her Longboat Key family stands at about 200 people right now, and three-fourths of all customers are greeted at the door with a hug. When the couple doesn’t hear from a regular for a few weeks, Vitorino will call to check in.

“I don’t look at them as customers, I look at them as friends and family,” she said. “I might

spend five or 10 minutes on the phone with them.”

Regular Lou Fusilli recalls a visit three months ago when Tito Vitorino walked over to his table — as he always does — and noticed he was drinking a merlot with his meal. Fusilli can’t recall what he was eating, but Vitorino returned with a free bottle of an Italian chianti, because he thought it would pair better with the dish.

“We’ve never had that kind of catering before,” said Fusilli, who originally came to Amore to watch lounge pianist Eddie Tobin as part of the restaurant’s nightly live music. “And it was just a delight (to be) introduced to a new wine by a connoisseur — he’s such a joyful man.”

Vitorino said he does that often.

“I don’t waste my time with words,” he said. “Actions speak more than any word could ever say.”

His No. 1 rule for staff: Never assume a customer is happy.

“It’s a very difficult business, and it’s impossible to please everybody, but you have to try,” Vitorino said.

The town is using the property for the coming Longboat Key Center for the Arts, Culture and Education.

The Vitorinos hope the town can find a way to keep the structure.

“Please, don’t tear it down,” Liana Vitorino said. “Invent something — host dance classes.”

Goldfarb said he’s sad to see Amore go, but confident of the couple’s success in a new location if they keep up the warm, friendly and family-like service.

“These things may sound corny,” he said. “But they are important when you’re dealing with the public.”

Colony foes form PAC

he former president of the Aquarius Club is spearheading a new group opposing the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort referendum. And he has two north end residents with a wealth of similar experience on board.

Frank Morneau, whose family owns 10 units in the building next to the Colony, has helped form a political action committee to begin raising money and buying advertisements, signs, flyers and other media to stoke opposition to the proposal to add another 180 units to the shuttered resort.

Carla and Pete Rowan, cofounders of Keep Longboat Special — an offshoot of Save the Longbeach Village — sit on the board of the new Preserve Longboat Key Inc. “We strive to eliminate parochial thinking,” Pete Rowan said, sitting down with his wife and Morneau on Feb. 1 in a ground floor unit at Aquarius. “We’re all in this together, so if one area is threatened and something inappropriate is happening, we’re trying to pull the whole island together.”

That was the thinking when Keep Longboat Special formed its own political action committee bearing the same name to oppose a north end hotel concept by developer Floridays. Before it closed, the PAC raised and spent more than $13,500 before voters

SURVEY SAYS Keep Longboat Special polled the roughly 1,000 members on its email list about the coming Colony Beach & Tennis Resort as part of a larger survey on a variety of island issues.

The result: 82% of the roughly 80 respondents chose “no” for reasons including traffic and density.

Of the 18% “yes” answers, respondents said it would increase the Key tax base, help local businesses and be accessible to all Longboat residents.

rejected a 120-unit resort on the site of a former gas station and bank building by a 78% vote in both Sarasota and Manatee counties.

And just like Keep Longboat Special, the new group includes an islandwide membership, including founding members from Aquarius, Tencon, Seaplace, Water Club and Promenade, among others. Residents of those condominiums have been meeting informally for the past three weeks, Morneau said.

Unicorp National Developments is proposing a 180-room, five-star hotel and 57 timeshares, along with 180 luxury condominiums on the site fronting Gulf of Mexico Drive. To ask for 180 units above the current 237 tourist units allotted, which have been unused since 2010, voters must approve a referendum on March 14.

To that end, Unicorp President Chuck Whittall already has hosted more than a dozen community meetings and spent $25,000 on advertising and signs urging a “yes” vote next month.

The company also has spent about $6,000 for Kimley-Horn and Associates to conduct an analysis that showed the 180 new units would reduce traffic on the island, and touted plans for a fixed-route trolley and other

traffic-management strategies.

Further, advertisements highlight that the Colony proposal will add jobs and significant tax dollars to the economy, and raise property values through the “halo effect.”

That’s where Morneau hopes his group can interject: He stands firmly against a proposal he says will only add more cars to an already tense traffic situation, is too dense for the character of Longboat and will lower surrounding property values because of crowded beaches, loss of views and shadows from proposed 12-story structures.

“The objective is two-fold: To counteract what is being publicized by the developer, and to express our opinion, which is that this is distinctly against our view of Longboat Key, and what we have bought here for, from the standpoint of community and ambiance,” he said. “This is a snow job beyond all snow jobs, and the bottom line is, we’re ready.”

kept the Keep Longboat Special moniker for the PAC, but chairman Craig Walters, another Longbeach Village resident and organizer, terminated the committee after the Floridays referendum failed. But Pete Rowan notes one tool they are bringing to the effort: an email list with more than 1,000 subscribers — which is up from about 400 when the group was fighting the hotel proposal. “‘Being a member of Keep is just being on the email list’ is what we say,” Pete Rowan said.

“And it just keeps growing.”

But Whittall contends that after meeting with the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and several merchants on St. Armands Circle, both of which were posi-

tive, the opposition to the plans is solely about neighbors being upset about their views being obstructed — which he said he could do anyway with the 237 units already allotted and current regulations. Further, he said a Unicorp shadow plan showed minimal effects to adjacent properties.

“A lot of times people who are first in think they get to make the call on what’s built on their neighbors’ property, and that’s just not the case,” he said. “To me, it’s very self-serving that they just care about their view across our property as opposed to something nice that’s good for the Key.” Along with the failure of the Floridays referendum, Longboat residents in November voted down a proposal to add up to 18 homes at Whitney Beach Plaza, as well as a plan for one additional unit of density at Harbour Square.

So why embark on what could be an expensive political and public relations campaign after the previous three referendums were denied, instead of sitting back and hoping the trend continues?

“Are we prepared to take that risk while a young man spending millions of dollars is going around on a PR campaign trying to talk people into things that are totally unrealistic?” Morneau asked. “If he ever won the vote, God bless us, watch the ‘for sale’ signs pop up.”

Despite an unexplained rise in fire and emergency service calls on Longboat Key in 2016, calls for police dropped more than 12%.

At a Town Commission meeting on Monday evening, Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino said the total number of calls the Longboat Key Police Department received decreased from 5,672 in 2015 to 5,013 in 2016. The department attributes this decrease to license plate readers that have been installed in police vehicles, Rubino said.

Because of the readers, responsibilities that were previously assigned to dispatchers now rest with the officers.

“Dispatch actually would send out a lot more calls than we’re having right now,” Rubino said.

Officers have the ability to determine potential serious crime suspects while using their judgment in making stops for lesser crimes, like expired tags.

“It’s not just, ‘It hit, so I’m going to stop that car,’” Rubino said.

Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi explained that fire and emergency services received 1,604 calls, a nearly 12% increase from 2015.

The top call for emergency services was for falls, while calls for boating mishaps, gas leaks and public assistance increased.

and cooking fires, also increased, but Dezzi said the rise is not enough to indicate a fire prevention problem.

Though calls increased, response times in 2016 were faster than department goals, Dezzi said. He also noted Longboat Key’s high survival rate of 30% for cardiac arrest incidents.

“The national average of cardiac survival is 10%,” Dezzi said.

Chris Krajic, Longboat Key Fire Rescue’s deputy chief, said he and his colleagues are accustomed to getting things done right away.

“We’re in emergency services,” he smiled, sitting at his desk at

the Key’s north station.

Krajic is referring to plans to renovate both the north and south fire stations on Longboat Key, projects he said he would like to see begin “as soon as is feasibly possible.”

Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi had originally hoped to present up

to $2 million worth of renovation options to the Town Commission last month, but the plans remain in limbo.

Dezzi’s plan for the north station, which he expects will cost between $450,000 and $500,000, includes building gender-specific locker rooms and sleeping quarters, as well as hardening the station to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.

The plan for the south station, which was built more than 30 years ago, is more ambitious. It includes all of the same renovations as the north building, plus the additions of a quarantine room and a bedroom for trainees, as well as relocating the fitness center.

The plan raises an important question.

“The bottom line is the cost,” Dezzi said. “Do we need a new firehouse or can we live with a remodel?”

Dezzi estimates remodeling the south station would cost between $1.5 million and $1.7 million while a brand-new building could cost upwards of $2.5 million.

Dezzi met with Town Manager Dave Bullock, Assistant Town Manager Mike Hein and Public Works Director Juan Florensa last month to discuss the plans.

Hein said town staff will go to the commission with a plan for renovating the stations before the start of the budget process, but there is no set date yet. Hein said he wants to make sure any outstanding issues in the plan are settled, like whether the doors and generators of the stations will be accounted for in the final cost.

“We want to make sure it’s inclusive of any and all costs,” Hein said. “The last thing we want is to think we have every-

thing settled, then ‘Yeah, but …’”

As to whether the south station will be rebuilt or remodeled, Hein said town staff is working to determine which option works best.

“I have long been taught that, until a decision is made, everything lies in the realm of possibilities,” Hein said. “At this point, you can’t rule anything out.”

Florensa held that, due to costs, he thinks town management is leaning toward a remodel for the south station.

“A rebuild would be substantial,” he said.

Dezzi plans to meet with Bullock, Hein and Florensa again next week to finalize the plan so it can be brought before the commission in March.

Krajic, who has been deputy chief at the north station for two years, emphasized that ensuring both stations can withstand a Category 4 is vital.

“You need a place to come back to,” Krajic said.

Krajic added that making sleeping quarters and dressing rooms gender-specific is important in providing firefighters with a sense of privacy.

“It’s just something that makes good common sense,” Krajic said.

Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans affirmed that it’s important that both stations are completely operational, but will wait to make any decision about the renovations until he sees the analysis by town staff.

Duo works to keep historic vessel afloat Two men take deep pride in restoring Italian craft with the goal of creating an educational platform.

Duette resident Rick Stewart and Whitney Beach resident Herman Kruegle are no strangers to 2 a.m. wake up calls.

For the past two years, the two have taken care of a 70-foot European pine, oak and teak schooner.

The boat, the San Francesco, was built in Italy in 1870 as a cargo ship to transport marble and granite to ports on the Mediterranean Sea. Part of the caretaking means checking on the ship when a highwater alarm sends alerts to their phones.

Once, Stewart, who manages FISH (Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage) BoatWorks, mistook a phone ringtone in a Houston airport for the warning. The hair on his neck stood up.

Another time, Kruegle’s wife called police to check on him in the middle of the night, fearing he had fallen overboard while checking the vessel.

After Stewart visited the boat in Clearwater throughout 2014, the previous owner donated it to him and Kruegle, a retired engineer who volunteers at FISH. The two formed the Cortez Classic Yacht Guild to help with its restoration.

from Clearwater in December 2014 and docked it at the Seafood Shack in Cortez. When they gained ownership, they had to hire an admiralty attorney to work with the Panamanian government because the previous owner owed money on the vessel. With all that settled, the San Francesco officially flies the U.S. flag.

Now, the San Francesco simply

is trying to stay afloat — literally and figuratively. Stewart and Kruegle are trying to raise the money to restore the boat.

“I’ve never been more invested in anything in my life,” Stewart said. “It’s the largest project I’ve ever attempted to undertake. It’s the love of my life. It’s what I do.

It’s what I live for.”

The problem? Money is short

and the San Francesco is partially underwater. Stewart thought the community would jump at the chance to help restore the boat, but he hasn’t had much fundraising luck. The guild needs $4,200 to get the boat floating again.

Then, $20,000 is needed to bring the boat from the Seafood Shack to FISH BoatWorks and gather the right equipment.

Once floating, the boat will go to NE Taylor Boatworks and then FISH BoatWorks, where volunteers will work to restore it.

Stewart said having the boat at FISH will bring more volunteers, allowing more people to touch a piece of history.

The goal is for the boat to be an environmental attraction and educational venue from the time it gets to FISH until it is relaunched.

Once restored, Stewart hopes to find the boat a homeport where it can venture around the area teaching youngsters seamanship, craftsmanship and environmental stewardship.

“I think that will instill a lot more in their brains than any average-Joe boat,” he said. “It has some historical significance.

“I do this for zero [money] because I have to. I don’t have any choice. Somebody has to do this to take this into the next generation. That’s why I’m doing it.”

Stewart and Kruegle have reached out to public and private entities, including Manatee County, for help. Most said the boat needs to be at FISH undergoing restoration before any monetary help can come.

“It has to be here, that’s the key,” Kruegle said. “They’ve been open and receptive, but I guess their hands are tied, or there are other projects.”

The Colony referendum Many residents have said Unicorp’s proposed Colony redevelopment looks fabulous. Just not for Longboat Key. The developer should remember: ‘Keep Longboat Longboat.’

P

recious little would thrill Longboat Key property owners and residents more than a 21st century version of the 20th century Colony Beach & Tennis Resort when it was at its apex as the No. 1 tennis resort in the world.

Elegant, chic, relaxed, first-class and family fun.

And for a half-century, it set the ambiance for Longboat Key. To be sure, Longboaters remain forever hopeful for an end to the decade-long dispute and destruction of one of the Key’s most treasured icons. And Longboaters are not all that particular about who resurrects that prized piece of beachfront, except in one respect: Longboaters want whoever redevelops the Colony to understand and embrace the island’s culture, values and aesthetics. Whoever it is should be steeped in understanding the phrase that permeated the Key’s vision process in 2014: “Keep Longboat Longboat.”

There is much more to that phrase than its literal translation. In 2014, when a panel from the Urban Land Institute came in to help refine Longboat’s vision plan, residents expressed a strong desire to “keep Longboat Longboat,” while at the same time they wanted to move the Key forward to remain the attractive beach community it has always been.

Stay the same, but modernize, offer the amenities in housing and leisure to stay abreast of market demands.

Here’s what else “Keep Longboat Longboat” means: Longboaters don’t want Miami Beach’s condo canyons on Gulf of Mexico Drive. Nor do they want an island that turns into a haven of weekly transients for Airbnb and VRBOs. They want what they still believe Longboat to be: an elegant, relaxed, safe, active, intelligent Gulf-front community and small town outfitted with housing and tourism choices that reflect the Key’s historical values and aesthetics.

Which brings us to the second question on the town’s March 14 referendum. This is Unicorp Development’s request for voter approval to convert the Colony’s zoning from tourism-use only to mixed use — residential and tourism — and allow up to 180 new, additional residential units to be developed. In short, Unicorp is seeking to increase the Key’s residential density.

This is the golden key to Longboat Key: controlled density. To protect the island from becoming Miami Beach, Longboat voters in 1984 approved a charter amendment that bestowed in voters the power to control Longboat’s residential density. Anyone who wants to increase the approved number of units on the

town’s platted books from the early 1980s must obtain voter approval.

Only a few have succeeded, and their requests were for fewer than 10 units each. Indeed, to illustrate how Longboaters guard the island’s density, just a few months ago they rejected longtime Longboat property owner Oscar Parsons’ request to convert his penthouse office space at 4134 Gulf of Mexico Drive to a single residential unit.

You know where this is headed. So let’s be direct: As Unicorp Development’s owner, Chuck Whittall, has heard often at his community meetings recently, his proposed development for the Colony property looks fabulous. Fantastic … Just not for Longboat Key. It’s not in scale with the island’s appearance and ambiance.

Just look at the two accompanying renderings — Unicorp’s (top) and that of MW Corp. — the ever-patient Longboater Manfred Welfonder and Naples-

based Lutgert Cos. With no disrespect to Whittall and his ambitious vision, if given the choice, it’s not speculative to say 99% of Longboat residents would prefer MW Corp.’s mid-rise development over Unicorp’s high-density, high-rise, five-star resort.

But mind you, the March 14 vote is not a referendum on the specifics of Unicorp’s proposed buildings. The vote is about population density — whether Longboaters are willing to give the Colony property the right to add up to 180 residential units, not just for Unicorp, but for whoever owns the Colony property in perpetuity.

The Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force expresses concern that voter approval would trigger demands for equal treatment from more than 40 other similarly nonconforming properties, calling such demands opening Pandora’s Box. That is certainly plausible.

But we’ll stick to the Unicorp issue.

Typically, we embrace population growth. It’s an essential ingredient to economic growth and prosperity. But we also subscribe to the long-standing rule of property rights — do no harm to your neighbor. No one knows whether Whittall’s proposal would harm his neighbors.

Harm is often subjective. But everyone can see Unicorp’s proposal is out of scale for the Key. Unicorp should ask for less.

We recommend: No on Colony density.

unwittingly will indicate a willingness to overturn 60 years of strict density control — the very issue Longboat’s voters believe is their exclusive purview …

The proposed Colony developer argues that the financial viability of the project is enhanced by the income resulting from the sale of the 180 new residential units. However, at least 47 other nonconforming properties on Longboat Key can make the same argument.

For example, one nonconforming property … has approximately 400 units on more than 40 acres. Using the same density as proposed in the March 14 referendum, that property could ask for approximately 450 additional units.

Over time, every aging property on the Key could make the same financial and density argument …

A “yes” vote March 14 automatically … would attach permanently the right to ask for up to 180 residential units to the

Colony property in perpetuity.

The question is: Do Longboat’s voters understand that more than 60 years of controlled density is at stake, and the character of the entire Key could change permanently?

It is true that the applicant must still gain approval of all the density issues (height, setback, footprint and so on).

But the voters will have already forfeited their ability to control density on the Key if the referendum is approved.

The ensuing arguments will not be based on more density because a “yes” vote answers that question. It says voters approve increased residential density …

While more density at the Colony is an issue of its own, that issue is not the only concern … As one of the Unicorp attorneys recently stated to the town commissioners: “You also have the obligation to treat [the developer] equally as you have done for others.” …

It’s not in keeping with island charm As owners on Longboat for 40 years, it is disturbing to see what is being proposed for the Colony.

The plan is not in keeping with the charm and character of this beautiful island. It would look like any other big city in the USA. We are also concerned with what could happen if a hurricane hit.

Considering the height and density of all those buildings, plus the many employees, it will make it virtually impos-

If you are concerned that the new Colony redevelopment plan will add too much traffic, congestion and density to Longboat Key, you may have an unpleasant surprise. When you consider this plan may include a ballroom, all the problems become magnified.

If, in fact, there is a ballroom for example, a ballroom of 10,000 square feet can accommodate between 500-1,000 people, depending on the type of function. During the week, the ballroom can be broken up into smaller venues for activities like meetings and conferences. Friday night to Sunday night is prime time for activities such as weddings. A successful hotel would love to book large events for Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

They would also like to utilize their space by having a second wedding Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Having a breakfast function is an added bonus.

Each one of these functions has a potential of 200-500 cars. You also have to include all the service vehicles to sup-

I am writing to voice a strong no vote on the referendum for the Colony referendum. My family has been coming to LBK for more than 30 years. During that time, we have certainly seen changes take place, but they have all been changes that keep the island progressing in a direction that we originally saw with our first visit to “paradise.’’

A place where families could enjoy a variety of cultures, entertainment, restaurant experiences, beach fun ... We developed memories for a lifetime in a setting that was always clean and where people enjoyed living an island life away from the loud noises and crowds of everyday life.

With the proposal of the new development, this will all be lost. We did not move here to have a Miami or a Las Vegas lifestyle. The proposed height of the structure would diminish the ambiance. The introduction of potentially 1,000 additional people would present a tipping point, primarily for transportation purposes but also in the atmosphere we have come to enjoy during our time here.

For the above reasons, we voice a strong no vote for the referendum.

I attended the first public forum for the proposed Colony redevelopment by Unicorp and came away appalled that Chuck Whittall’s traffic study is based on a manual (Transportation Engineers Trip Generation Manual) rather than actual vehicle counts. Actual vehicles cause congestion, not paper cars.

No afternoon, midafternoon, or evening vehicle counts attributable directly to the proposed Colony redevelopment were given. Also, vehicle counts for the almost 500 workers of the proposed fivestar resort were not addressed

by Unicorp’s flawed paper traffic study.

And perhaps most importantly, “season” and “snowbird” vehicle counts were not factored into this paper study. The Unicorp proposed fixed route trolley will not in any dissuade the Bentley and Jaguar crowd to abandon their rides.

On March 14, I urge Longboat key voters to cast a no vote against the Unicorp Colony redevelopment density increase.

If you are thinking that this could cause three extra traffic jams a day, you are incorrect.

Vehicles that enter also exit.

We are talking about a potential of six extra traffic jams per day, each consisting of possibly 200-500 extra vehicles on Gulf of Mexico Drive! Add this to our existing traffic, and we have created a nightmare with gridlock most weekdays and all weekend. (Think rush hour traffic in places like New York City, Chicago, Rome, and Tokyo).

An interesting question is whether the traffic vehicles would turn right out of the new Colony and head south or turn left and head north. The point is moot because the potential of so many vehicles entering and exiting at the same time would cause major traffic problems.

Most of us moved to Longboat Key for its natural beauty and tranquillity. A Colony project of this magnitude could destroy all of what we love about our island. Please vote no on the March 14 support only sensible growth.

Police were initially unable to find the dog’s owner but eventually reunited Sampson with the resident. The man said he thought the dog escaped when someone was entering or leaving the house.

BUTT OUT 5:19 p.m. — 1600 block of GMD Traffic Complaint: Police found a man sitting in a white van near an abandoned property, and approached him to ask about his activity. The man told officers he was early for an appointment and stopped to have a cigarette.

READY, AIM, FIRE! 6:54 p.m. — 2200 block of Harbour Court Noise Disturbance: A man called police to report an explosion coming from a nearby marine. Officers canvassed the area and discovered a boat as the source of the noise. The owner of the vessel said he had fired a replica cannon and was unaware of the town’s noise ordinance. He said he would not fire the cannon again.

An officer gave the man a ride to Anna Maria Island.

FORE! 9:09 a.m. — 3100 block of Harbourside Drive Property Damage: A woman reported that while driving along a main road, an errant golf ball struck her windshield. The woman told officers the white ball bounced away after impact, but did not provide any further information.

SAILING SAVIOR 1:20 p.m. — Off the Key Boat: A marine patrol officer was flagged down by a boat owner having engine issues. A good Samaritan in another vessel approached and offered to tow the man’s boat to safety so he could work on the engine.

CAR CONFUSION 4:38 p.m. — 500 block of General Harris Street Suspicious Vehicle: A caller contacted police to report a suspicious white car driving up and down their street. Officers ran the plate number provided, and it came back as a motorcycle from another city. Police checked the area and could not find the vehicle reported.

Sands Point sips and socializes

ands Point residents started a recent week off on the right foot.

On Jan. 31, five residents enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting with Clayton Daley, CEO and proprietor of Winner’s Circle Winery. Participants tasted three different kinds of pinot noir and paired them with soft, semi-hard and goat cheeses. Bon Pari, which means good bet in French, was the name of the pinot noir tasted from Winner’s Circle Winery.

The other two were a Williamette pinot noir and an Argus pinot noir.

Abbott Buegeleisen, 102, of Sarasota, died Jan. 31.

He was born in Cortland, N.Y., and was raised in Granville, N.Y. He graduated from Granville High School and attended Cornell University and graduated from Bryant College with a degree in accounting. During the Korean War, he graduated from Officer Candidate School as a second lieutenant. He later attended The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1957 with an M.B.A. Following his graduation from Wharton, he worked for Parker & Co. Insurance in Philadelphia.

He then went on to buy an insurance company, Gilbert, Gear and Co. Inc. in Troy, N.Y. It later became Gear Stillman Insurance Co. that he owned for 32 years.

He was president of CPCU, the Insurance Professional Society, of Albany, N.Y. He was president of the Lions Club, served on many boards in the Capitol District and taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He loved golf, tennis, skiing, hunting, fishing and boating. He was a member of Troy Country Club, Lake St. Catherine, Longboat Key Club, Grand Harbour and The Dorset Field Club. During retirement, he enjoyed studying the history of Lake St. Catherine and The Dorset Field Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen S. Barrow.

He is survived by his son, David, and his spouse; daughter Nancy N. Barrow; two grandchildren; his partner, Barbara T. Brittingham, and her daughters and grandchildren.

He was born in New York City.

He roller-skated around his neighborhood and traveled to Europe every year, starting at the age of 8, so his parents could take care of family business importing and distributing musical instruments. He enjoyed dancing and theater.

He graduated from New York University in 1936 and was accepted in Harvard Business School, but he stayed in New York to join his brother and father in working at Buegeleisen & Jacobson. He served in the Third Army as a second lieutenant quartermaster in WWII, overseeing a restaurant in Paris after the liberation. When he returned home, he was introduced to Sally Peyser. They fell in love quickly and got married. In 1957, Abbott fulfilled a lifelong dream and learned how to fly. After that, the couple traveled throughout United States, the Caribbean and the Bahamas for more than 30 years. They had homes on Longboat Key and in Rye, N.Y., before settling in Sarasota permanently and establishing a multiple sclerosis research fund and hosted annual galas to raise money and awareness surrounding the disease.

Abbott loved chocolate, travel and spending time with friends and families.

He was preceded in death by Sally.

He is survived by his children, Alan and Monia Joblin; one granddaughter; one great grandson and one great nephew.

he Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Ballroom turned a light shade of pink on Feb. 1.

About 130 people attended the club’s annual Go for the Cure Games Day benefiting Breast Health Sarasota Inc. While wearing pink, the color for breast cancer awareness, wasn’t a requirement, many on hand chose to do so, giving the ballroom a little brighter tone.

The sold-out event included a brunch before the guests played the games they brought.
